10 TOP RANKED THAI BL ON MYDRAMALIST
+my opinion, since I’ve watched all of them for this post
1. I Feel You Linger in the Air (8,9/10)
Tumblr media
DESCRIPTION: Jom is an architect responsible for the renovation of a historic house alongside the Ping River. There he discovers a wooden chest packed with old drawings, drawings that look strangely familiar. The contents are intriguing. However, Jom doesn't have time to concern himself with them; he has plans to reunite with his boyfriend. For years, Jom has been counting the days till his boyfriend would return from his far away studies, only to find him engaged to someone else on his return. Heartbroken, Jom comes to a place of acceptance as he mistakenly runs his car into the river. In the cold darkness, Jom catches the sweet scent of fresh frangipani flowers coming from the stream and in the distance, he can make out a deep, gentle voice pronouncing clearly, "Pho Jom."
MY TAKE: Well deserved first place. It’s the best Thai drama I’ve ever seen and I really hope we’ll get more like this one in the future. Everything was on point - the costumes, the acting, the cinematography. The relationship between the main characters felt real and absolutely believe, especially thanks to P’Bright (Khun Yai), who delievered everything well through his eyes. The story made me emotional to the point I cried like a baby at the end, which didn’t happen for a really long time. To be honest, I could rewatch this series without ever getting bored because of how unique and heartwarming it was. If I were to criticise anything, I’d choose the fact that Jom seemed quite bland during the first few episodes and also the way Khun Yai wasn’t cautious at all with their relationship despite living around the 1920s. However, it can be explained by some things from the novel, which I’m considering to write a post about. Aside from the romance plot, IFYLITA discussed the topic of women’s opression and offered a lesbian sub-plot that made the story even better. I recommend everyone to watch it, it’s ridiculous how little recognition the series got from the BL fandom!
2. The Sign (8,6/10)
Tumblr media
DESCRIPTION: For as long as Tharn can remember, he's had premonitions about those around him, sensing both the good and the bad. Partners on a team of special investigators, when kind and cheerful Tharn met clever and charming Phaya, it felt as though they'd known each other for a long time.
MY TAKE: Another gem showing that the industry is slowly heading to a new, better direction. The plot contains lots of action scenes, investigations and Thai mythology elements, which I don’t think have been used in any series before, at least not in a well known one. I’m a sucker for reinarnation and soulmates motives, I wish Tharn and Phaya believed in each other more though. It was frustrating to see them fight so much. Some of the comedy scenes made me cringe, too. Still, the story was solid and engaging, especially thanks to Tharn and Phaya’s relationship complexity. During some scenes CGI was used and I have to admit they must have spent some budget on it. It’s the third Idolfactory’s drama and they definitely get better with every project. More series like The Sign!
3. Last Twilight (8,5/10)
Tumblr media
DESCRIPTION: Burdened with heavy debt, Mhok, a technical college student, applies for a high-paying job as a caregiver to Day, a badminton player with partial blindness due to infectious keratitis. Day hires Mhok who—unlike other applicants—seems to take no pity on him. With so much time spent in each others' company, the two develop a deep bond. When Day learns he'll have approximately 90 days until he loses what vision he has remaining, how will the two weather the trials ahead?
MY TAKE: I’m gonna be honest, I fell in love with Last Twilight very quickly. The acting was top-notch - I think P’Sea portrayed a blind character really well despite having vision and P’Jimmy… P’Jimmy was just on another level of greatness. Just like P’Bright, his eyes told everything. Every emotion could be seen clearly and he efortlessly made Mhok the viewer’s favourite. Mhok itself was a mature, selfless person, but with Jimmy’s portrayal I think it’s even harder not to love him, not be enchanted by him. I found the story heartwarming and moving, beautifully culminating in the last scene of the 9th episode. At that moment I’ve felt that both Day and Mhok’s journey found some sort of an ending, maybe terribly sad, but also with some sweetness in it. Throughout the whole series it was Mhok teaching Day how to live again after losing his sight and encouraging him to stand on his own legs again. In the 9th episode though it seemed like the dynamic shifted somehow, showing that Day reached some maturity that Mhok haven’t had yet, and that he could help him with his grief too. The whole message of Last Twilight was delivered fully then. However, what happened later completely ruined it. I understand that P’Aof wanted LT to be realistic and because of that he decided to face the fact that Mhok can’t be Day’s caretaker forever. But all of this was handled poorly, seemed rushed especially after 11 episode and I couldn’t bear to watch one of my favourite series trashing itself. After that it was also imposible to ignore the issues I had with Mhok and Day’s relationship anymore, especially the August plot. I hated how although Day showed huge interest in Mhok on the beginning, he suddenly revealed his crush on other boy and he seemed really bothered by Mhok’s confession, too. What a mess. Porjai and Night’s subplot was great though, I liked both the characters and their relationship. I recommend everyone to just watch episodes 1-9 despite some disappointments on the way.
4. Not Me (8,5/10)
Tumblr media
DESCRIPTION: Black and White are twins with a powerful connection. After their parents' separation, though, White’s father took him abroad, and their family effectively severed in two. It isn’t until fifteen years have passed that White—now grown—returns to Thailand. One day, seemingly from nowhere, White feels an agony like death. He recovers in the hospital, but they’re unable to determine the cause. Then he picks up a call from a childhood friend, Tod. Tod tells him that Black is in a coma following a vicious attack, and he learns that Black is in a motorcycle gang. Unable to endure the harm done to his brother in silence, and suspecting it was one of Black’s close friends—Sean, Gram, or Yok—who betrayed him, White disguises himself as Black to root out the traitor. But White doesn’t know his brother as well as he thought; he’s not behaving like the Black Sean knows, distrustful and uncaring about the feelings of others. Sean's suspicious. The difference gets under Sean's skin and makes him feel things he shouldn’t.
MY TAKE: I’ve actually first started watching Not Me around the time it was coming out, but I became bored around the half of it, so I’ve seen the rest of the episodes just recently. It’s refreshing to receive a politics and society problems oriented BL, this series without doubt was mature and one of a kind. Not Me took on many issues the modern Thailand still faces, struggling with democracy, human rights and equality. The relationship between White and Sean was another difficult thing here with its complexity, as they faced their opposite ideas for making a change - Sean being more reckless and hotheaded, while White more rational and fragile mentally. They went through many stages and although they were allies, it’d call it an enemies to lovers dynamic. I felt connected to both of them - to White because I agreed with his methods more and to Sean because of his abandonment issues. What they had was not pretty, no, it was raw and even rough at times, however, they managed to build mutual trust and the ending was satisfying. Definitely recommend!
5. A Tale of Thousand Stars (8,5/10)
Tumblr media
DESCRIPTION: After a volunteer teacher Torfun dies in a tragic accident, her heart is transplanted into Tian. Tian learns about his donor’s life through a series of diary entries that reveal her secrets and interests. Included is her promise to count a thousand stars with Chief Forest Officer Phupha. Tian decides to follow in Torfun's footsteps and fulfill her promise. Now a new volunteer teacher himself, Tian attempts to befriend Phupha who initially gives him the cold shoulder. As the two grow steadily closer, Tian notices his new heart beats quickly whenever he's near the officer. Much like the heart’s previous owner, Tian cannot help but fall for Phupha. Treading on dangerous ground, can he still go through with the thousand-star promise?
MY TAKE: It’s such a classic that I don’t know if there’s anyone who hasn’t heard of it yet, but let’s proceed! 1000 stars for years took a special place in my heart, as it was one of few good Thai BL during the time it came out. I loved the rural atmosphere of Pha Pun Dao and the process of Tian adapting to life in the village. The story was slow, warm and sort of pure, although the tension and chemistry were there. Big kudos for the scene in which Tian came to the conclusion that his feelings for Phupha mean he likes men, since that wasn’t a standard in the „I don’t like men, I only like you” era. Another thing is, P’Mix (Tian), who was a rookie back then, played his role so well that I would never suspect it’s his first time acting! Recommend for anyone seeking comfort, even if it gets sad by the end.
6. My School President (8,5/10)
Tumblr media
DESCRIPTION: Student body president Tinn has a secret crush on Gun, the head of the music club and lead singer of the middling band Chinzhilla. The son of the principal, Tinn is instructed to axe any clubs that don't boost their school's reputation. The music club tops that list and Tinn is therefore Gun's number one enemy. Desperate to save his club, Gun will do anything, even pledge servitude to Tinn. When Tinn learns Chinzhilla has a rule that band members aren't permitted to date until they win the Hot Wave Music Contest, he vows to do whatever it takes to help them do just that.
MY TAKE: At first the fact that the story takes place in a high school setting put me off, as I prefer watching young adult stories, but I gave it a shot because of the good reviews. And after watching it I can say it was definitely worth it. My School President is a silly rom-com that delicately touches some more serious issues. Nevertheless, it was a light watch. N'Gemini and N'Fourth delievered an excellent performance, accurately and realistically portraying the main couple. Maybe it’s because they are just slightly older than the characters, so it was easier for them to understand them. I also still listen to MSP soundtracks. Aside from being simply good pieces of music, they make me feel positive and refreshed everytime I hear them. It’s like an energizer.
7. Bad Buddy (8,4/10)
Tumblr media
DESCRIPTION: Ever since they were young, Pran and Pat's families had a deep and raging rivalry, trying to one-up each other on everything. This also extended to their sons. Comparing their sons' achievements and merits,—whether it be academic or extracurricular—the two families leave no stone unturned to outshine and gloat in front of the other. The rivalry was passed down as a family heirloom and the two boys become rivals in turn. Until... they grow tired and become friends. Really good friends. However, because of their families' rivalry, their friendship has to be kept under wraps. And so began a journey of secret friendship... and then perhaps a secret romance?
MY TAKE: This is another series I’ve dropped in half and picked up just recently. Although the entire enemies since birth plot seemed a little bit Wattpad-ish to me, Ive still enjoyed Bad Buddy a lot. The relationship of Pat and Pran was fun and realistic, they also had good chemistry together, probably due to the actor’s long-lasting frienship. There was something about them that just seemed so natural. Big plus for verse rights and lesbian sub-plot. The only thing I’m not content with was that instead of working things through with their families, the scriptwriters decided to just make Pat and Pran lie and avoid the topic. It could have been handled in a better way.
8. Moonlight Chicken (8,3/10)
Tumblr media
DESCRIPTION: Jim is an ordinary guy running a Hainanese chicken rice diner. One night, he meets breezy Wen when he stays past closing drunk. Brought together by fate that night, intangible feelings arise. Neither can stop thinking about the other despite Jim's efforts to remain unattached. Working at the diner are Jim's nephew Li Ming, Saleng, and occasionally chicken supplier Kaipa who doesn't mind having an excuse to see him.
MY TAKE: I’m a Chinese learner and liked P’Earth and P’Mix’s performance in 1000 stars a lot, so I was looking forward for Moonlight Chicken to come out. The relationship between Jim and Wen disappointed me a bit, as it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. They started off from a one night stand and Jim was doing everything he could to keep things this way, with Wen persistently trying to change his mind. I’m still happy though, because the series maturely portrayed real life problems of Thai people. Jim, as an adult, was a person tied by chores and responsibilities of a restaurant owner and legal guardian for his teenager nephew. It’s understandable for him to take more things than just his feelings into consideration, especially since he was older than Wen. The problems between them made the series even more realistic, but N’Gemini (Heart) and N’Fourth (Li Ming) undoubtebly stole this show from the main couple. Not good for people wanting to watch something romantic and fluffy, nevertheless, still good.
9. Triage (8,3/10)
Tumblr media
DESCRIPTION: Third-year emergency medicine resident Tin has to cope with a deluge of different patients every day. Up until the eighteenth, that is. Tin's life is transformed when university student Tol's car is overturned, and he's rushed to the emergency room in serious condition. That night doesn't end when Tin fails to save Tol's life, though. When Tin next wakes, he finds himself in a time loop, a loop he won't be able to leave until he's altered Tol's fate.
MY TAKE: Triage was a slowburn and it took quite a few episodes for the main couple to start developing feelings, as the time loops didn’t help in building any kind of closeness. They had good chemistry though and I really liked the performance of every actor in this series. Also! The! Plot! It was truly a masterpiece. It turned out that Triage novel is another work of Manner of Death’s author and that those two are actually connected. Doctor Bun and Tan appear in one episode of Triage and if MoD season 2 actually happens, it will be a continuation of the mystery after Triage’s ending. About the ending itself, it wasn’t satisfying. Also, why do I feel like they got some inspiration from the movie Bruce Almighty?
10. To Sir, With Love (8,3/10)
Tumblr media
DESCRIPTION: The Five Dragon Guild is under the leadership of Jao Sua Song. He's skilled and in control in business, but things in the family have become chaotic. By his main wife Li, he has his eldest son Thian. He has a secondary wife Jan with whom he has a son named Yang and he has a mistress named Bua. In a Chinese family, masculinity is prized. Thian is the face of the family, the one who will eventually succeed Song, who will carry the power his father has built. Khun Chai is not a position just anyone is suited to. The love between two men is obstructed by Chinese society.
MY TAKE: Everthing was good here - the acting, the costumes, the setting... a high quality series indeed. I especially loved brotherly bond between Tian and Yang, as it was the purest and the most wholesome thing in this drama. The murder plot was interesting too. However, all of this was simply too prolonged. Because everyone for 17 1-hour episodes straight was running around and trying to find that Tian’s homosexual, they may as well just name the series Tian’s secret. I got sick of it around 9th episode and there were still 8 more. It’s a pity that it completely ruined To Sir, With Love for me. Tian and Jiu, the main couple, didn’t receive many screentime, so it was quite unsatisfying too.
[there will be a link to 11-15 in the future]

Oh neat, so there are shows that don’t follow the book all too much. Twitter gave me the impression that’s a no-no in china. Glad to see it’s just fans being oddly protective of canon.
Listen... I LOVE JTTW media... hence that's why I am collecting it and listing it.
I mean there are HUNDREDS of interpretations of Journey to the West and while I am not an expert in media I do know that in most cases a lot of projects in Chine are either big-budget movies, passion projects, or even cash-grabs but either way, the range is long and wide. I personally know that when it comes to categorizing so many interpretations there are bound to be…. some more disappointing material than others but that just means highlighting other media even more!! If there is something one media a person doesn’t enjoy the good news!! There are HUNDREDS of other media out there for you! There is a journey to the west story out there for everyone and I think anyone can enjoy it!
However, the thing to keep in mind is that... JTTW is a culturally important piece of literature in China and while interpretations can range from silly to serious, romance to action, modern to historical, there is always a nod to the original source material to show an understanding of people who grew up with this story their whole lives and already are generally aware of the cultural significance the story has had with literature, history, or even modern culture. Just the causal saturation of JTTW in everyday lives for people that grew up with this story. These interpretations are a kind of consistent continuation of the story, that no matter what generation there is always going to be a new movie or a new television that gets another generation of people to know and love the original source material.
Of course, this kinda material, at least personally, can be very meaningful to those that grew up with it because it's not only culturally important but also it's nostalgic in a way that non-natives can find hard to understand. I like to think that sharing JTTW is always great in that others can be introduced to the literature and become interested! However, people who aren't familiar with JTTW and haven't been surrounded by mass amounts of media their whole lives. Non-natives aren't familiar with the religious or historical context within the story and easily glossed over these aspects if they only consume movie or television media of this literature. Usually,
Westerners that are familiar with the material are only subjected to one of the many interpretations that are inspired by JTTW but not the actual material itself. Westerners haven't been saturated in the causal references of seeing these stories and understanding when media is being satirical or sincere when it comes to the OG story. The OG story has been told again and again many times but that's because people who have grown up with the story have a general understanding of what it means to be just another adaptation versus something that is supposed to represent a true retelling of the story for those that are no familiar to the OG story and is meant to be an introduction to the story.
People who have grown up with these stories are never going to take most of these adaptions as anything more but an enjoyable interpretation of the beloved cultural piece they are familiar with and are able to separate the interpretation from the OG. I think the real issue when it comes to people not familiar with this tale, consume media is that is often taken as 'fact' and anything that lay outside this first impression can lead to misunderstandings and arguments, especially when people disregard the original tale if it doesn't fit their first interpretation. While this may be a very great piece of media or very enjoyable there is a general understanding that is it only one of the many that there are, and many there will ever be.
There are a lot of layers to JTTW and it's understandable that people who have not been saturated in this culture are not away of it, so when natives try to correct or even protect their culture from non-natives' interpretations or misinformation there is a mind to please be culturally sensitive to learning new things. JTTW has historical and religious importance represented within it the tale and non-natives can make the mistake of invalidating these beliefs or figures by only consuming surface-level media.
I love JTTW media, good or bad, I want to count all mediums to how this story has been told and re-told over and over again throughout the decades not to show 'hey this can be taken in any context with no repercussions' but rather to show people that 'hey there are a lot of ways that this story has been interpreted so if you do not like one then you can see another, perhaps even be inspired to learn more of the material.' I love spreading information but there needs to be a general acknowledgment as great as JTTW is just a piece of media it all started from being such a culturally important and impactful piece of literature able to masterly combine Buddhism, Daoism, and Chinese folklore.
There has been a history of Western media... being insensitive to Eastern cultures and as such, I understand why there is a protectiveness over something like JTTW when it comes to non-natives perhaps misunderstanding or being unaware of the more important aspects of the media. Most, if not all JTTW media, is not made for people who KNOW about JTTW. JTTW media is created for people that already know the OG and already enjoy it, usually looking to find an easily consumable way to enjoy this literature through a different medium without having to read 100 chapters. Watching a piece of JTTW media doesn't make someone an expert in JTTW nor does it make them more familiar with Chinese culture. An individual has to take it upon themself to find out more about the OG JTTW, and again in my personal opinion, I believe that it makes JTTW media even more enjoyable as you have a deeper understanding of how these interpretations were created.

top three period dramas?
Not counting musicals, because it would be a rigged game then:
(1) I, Claudius. Yes, it's inaccurate. Yes, its portrayal of the women of the Julio-Claudian dynasty is undoubtedly sexist, not helped by the fact that Robert Graves was a massive sexist. Yes, it's based on something by Robert Graves, who, as a Celticist, I am professionally obliged to have a strong hatred for.
But it's also well done, the actors are all phenomenal, I quote things from it every day ("WHERE ARE MY EAGLES?" "Don't eat the figs, dear" "You may kiss me and go" "Uncle CLAAAAAAUDDDDDIIIUUUUSSSS" "IS THERE ANYONE IN ROME WHO HAS NOT SLEPT WITH MY DAUGGGHHHHHTAAAAHHHH"), and for something that was made with a limited budget, I think they actually do a good job of showing the intimate world of the dynasty in a way that a lot of more recent series (Rome) failed to do with bigger sets, and the scriptwriters deserve credit for dusting off Graves' incredibly dry prose and making an adaptation that's crackling with wit in just about every scene for all of its six episode run length.
(2) Pride and Prejudice (1995). Such a shame that there hasn't been one made since then, but I can't blame them, given this set such a high standard. As a child, me and my mom were up to 2 AM watching it because we had no idea how it was going to end and we kept going "just one more episode!" until we'd reached the end.
And sharing third place: The Man in the Iron Mask (1998) and Ladyhawke (1985) -- Both of them were formative for me. The Man in the Iron Mask is very much putting multiple experienced actors together and letting them ham it up alongside Leonardo DiCaprio alongside gorgeous sets and costumes with a great score by Nick Glennie-Smith. It has next to no accuracy to the OG novel, it's wildly historically inaccurate, but my god it's *fun*. Ladyhawke, meanwhile, is probably one of my favorite depictions of the Middle Ages, specifically because it doesn't go into either the extreme of the Dung Ages or the extreme of, say, the 1950s where everyone is looking absolutely pristine. I think it's a nice compromise between the two of them. The plot itself, of two lovers forced to change shape, always together, never apart, by the machinations of a wicked bishop, reads like something from a medieval romance, even though I know, logically, that it isn't, just because it really does capture the *feeling* of the era. (And I will not hear a bad word against the soundtrack.)
Bonus round: Brennus, Enemy of Rome. This film is not good, but it IS the only film adaptation of Brennus' Invasion of Rome to date and...believe me, it being good would ruin the fun of it. ("KILL THE ROMANSSSSS ARRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHH" Best introduction to an antagonist ever.)

2023 Drama Round-Up!
I know no one asked for this, but I figured I’d post what I’ve watched this year and how I rank them in case anyone is looking for recommendations! I saw @dangermousie did this and stole this idea (hope that’s ok!)
14. Heartbeat: It was…fine? Didn’t really leave me with any lasting impression. Was hoping for more from a drama about a vampire. I need a good vampire drama. This wasn’t it.
13. Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo - So much potential, didn’t live up to the hype. Give me those BATB vibes any day normally, but in this case the FML was too Mary Sue for me.
12. Back from the Brink- Fun! Good side characters! ML bored me to tears. FML carried the drama. Will keep an eye out for her.
11. Moon in the Day: A solid story. Nice and neat. Definitely would watch the ML in other things. I’m always here for a reincarnation storyline.
10. My Journey to You - Esther Yu! Zhang Linghe! Other awesome characters! Vibes! Otherwise just OK, I wasn’t super invested in the story. Would watch a second season if they deign to make one.
9. The King: Eternal Monarch - Another one that had great potential and I ended up somewhat disappointed. The concept was fantastic. I really love a modern day story with a modern monarch who’s beloved. I’m a big fan of the two main actors so that bumped it up the list. Unfortunately their chemistry was only so-so.
8. Tale of the Nine Tailed S1 - LEE YEON AND LEE RANG brother dynamic sobbbb
7. Doom at Your Service - Great leads with awesome chemistry! Sad! Story was simple and sweet.
6. Love is Sweet - OG Bai Lu/Luo Yunxi couple!! I loved them so much, I’m def watching this show again and again. Couldn’t stand the second couple, though, I skipped all of their scenes.
5. Alchemy of Souls S1 - This show has such a phenomenal concept, and a really well flushed out universe. The side characters are all great and three dimensional. I love the magic too. It’s lower on the list just because I’m not as emotionally connected to the leads as I am to those in other shows, but I really love this show.
4. Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938 - This show has it all: magic, romance, historical setting, fashion, time travel, politics, humor. As much as I love LDW/Lee Yeon, the show was really an ensemble triumph. The story, the action, the humor, everything was top notch. Excelled in surpassing the first season in quality which seems so unlikely but they really did it.
TIED FOR SECOND
Til The End of the Moon - What can I say about this show? It’s wump central. It’s serving misunderstanding trope but make it completely overdone and unbearable. The fake blood budget alone could have paid all of the actors’ salaries. The female lead got shafted in favor of the male lead.
And yet…
You’ll think about this show every day for the rest of your life. I know I do.
(Also credited for the beginning of my obsession with Luo Yunxi. He’s babygirl. Tantai Jin is the best character ever written.)
Goblin - Oh man, this show. THIS SHOW. Despite some controversy over the age difference between the main couple, i love them. I grew up on vampire romance, nothing can sway me there. I really bought into their romance and I was devastated when they went through it. I cried more in this show than I have in any other. I also completely loved and was invested in the second couple, which almost NEVER happens.
Despite the romance of the two couples being stellar, it was the friendship and the found family that really sold it for me. The Goblin and the Grim Reaper have the best friendship and wildly fun chemistry onscreen. I couldn’t get enough of them. I watched the bts of them so many times over.
And my favorite for 2023…
1. Love Between Fairy and Devil - My first Asian drama. My first love. Noting will surpass this. No couple will touch Dongfang Qingcang and Xiao Lan Hua. I’ve rewatched it twice already. It’s the clear winner.
I’m currently watching My Demon and so far it’s rly good. Might break top ten.
On the short list to watch in 2024:
- Alchemy of Souls S2 (I’m not ready for it to end but I NEED to see it)
- Ashes of Love (I’m forcing myself to finish this I HAVE TO FOR LY)
- Story of Kunning Palace
- Only for Love

i sooo want a good romcom again & ik recently there's been a bunch of romcom drops (i think anne has smth otw) but they just don't work for some reason? i cant put my finger on it tho why they're rubbing me the wrong way but they just are .....
ik you're a film student so i wonder why you think that may be the case!
-🐰
quite simply there's no real chemistry is the main thing people pick up on? they just put two hot people and say go at it.
and there's also no real...earnestness or care put into them everything is meta and set aware (the marvel effect) so audiences can never fully sink themselves into the narrative. like to all the boys was a ya romcom yes but even adults liked it because it was just something sweet, and earnest and even with the slightly unbelievable plot you fully bought into the world and the characters and it was truly a lightning in a bottle moment even the sequels couldn't replicate. so many of the plots are just...nothing or tired retreads without anything new to say. that's why movies like Lisa Frankenstein are doing so well with audiences because yes its a horror comedy but its also very clearly a romance about two lonely people who had to cross the mortal coil to have each other and related deeply despite being 100+ years and a death apart lol. the girls want connection and romance. the girls also want eroticism? idk why people complain about sex in movies we are the most sexless we've ever been and romcoms kinda...need a sexual aspect even if the leads never touch on screen we need the vibe that they fuck
also just like everything is very...on the nose and of its time in a way thats not very endearing like everything is going to be dated thats how film works its going to be a reflection of the times but I think with rom coms being soooooo aware of the flaws of past romcoms they try to overcorrect the characters don't speak or act like real people its giving twitter hypotheticals "ladies is eating McDonalds in a car a first date" instead of people organically liking each other and going through the ups and downs. no balance of conflict either its either too much or too little.
and visually most things sucks. like extremely bad costume wise, they're just putting people in shein and h&m and calling it a day. nothing strikes us, nothing identifies us with the characters personality or feelings or place in life
lastly like studios aren't giving them the budget or like they aren't being released in theaters its on streaming which seems more accessible but in many ways its not and so many rom coms bombed at the box office bur thrived on the home video market. now things are released to streaming and if its a show its canceled after 2 episodes if its not pulling in 100 billion views and for movies AND shows they're erased from platforms indiscriminately to never be seen again. and romcoms historically were never huge box office hits so studios and services don't care to make them.
sorry this was so long lol. invest in a dvd player and find your fav movies on eBay or at the Walmart 5 dollar bin thats what keeps your favorite genres and movies alive.

The Mail: ‘The Crown’ is ‘lurid,’ portraying Charles as ‘devious, impatient, resentful’
November 01, 2022
By Kaiser
Tumblr media
The British royal commentators are playing a dangerous game with Netflix, The Crown and the monarchy. Their gleeful commentary about the “lurid, unflattering” Netflix series shows their eagerness to exploit all of these tragedies all over again, all while assuming an air of performative fury on behalf of King Charles. Does Charles really understand what he’s unleashed? Netflix is laughing all the way to the bank, especially with Salt Island’s media giving The Crown millions in free publicity. Even more than the free publicity, the commentators are making The Crown sound like the most epic royal takedown ever. The Mail’s Christopher Stevens has seen the whole (still embargoed) season 5. And he couldn’t help but throw a huge tantrum about all of it.
There are no depths of bad taste that writer Peter Morgan does not plumb in the new ten-part series of The Crown on Netflix. Divorces, infidelities, the most intimate conversations, the infamous interview with Princess Diana and Martin Bashir, even the death of a five-year-old from cancer, all are exploited for lurid drama. As the eight-and-a-half hours of new film were made available to journalists last night, under a stringent embargo, the sheer virulence of the storylines became shockingly clear.
Charles, Philip and at times the Queen herself are portrayed with disdain bordering on mockery. A teenage Prince William is also shown in an unflattering light, as slightly dim and sulky, though his younger brother Harry is let off lightly and barely features. Netflix may well find that, with the international grief and mourning that marked the death of the Queen less than two months ago, viewers’ appetite for royal muck-raking has disappeared.
Insiders at the streaming video giant say the mood in the company is already uneasy, with some American executives surprised by the backlash from fans who fear the death of the Princess of Wales will be re-enacted in graphic detail. This series stops short of that moment. It ends with Diana, divorced from Charles, preparing for a Mediterranean holiday with her friend Dodi Fayed.
Full reviews, with assessments of individual performances and an analysis of how far the script strays from historical fact, are embargoed until Saturday morning. But no spoiler alert is needed when I say that this series of The Crown is unrecognisable in its tone, compared to the original series in 2016. This show with its almost unlimited budget and all-star cast has become a monstrous perversion of itself.
At the beginning, The Crown charted the affectionate romance of the Princess Elizabeth and her prince, the Duke of Edinburgh, played with touching vulnerability by Claire Foy and Matt Smith. But it has descended into scandal-mongering, intent on inflicting every possible embarrassment on the Royal Family. The Crown is now a nakedly republican polemic, using embarrassment as its chief weapon against the monarchy.
Chief victim is the monarch himself. Perhaps Morgan and his Netflix paymasters imagined, like most of us, that the Queen would survive, ruling above reproach, for a number of years to come – and that the Prince of Wales was fair game. Certainly, none of the preview episodes (labelled, it ought to be said, as ‘work in progress’) carried an acknowledgment of Her Majesty’s death. Any viewers expecting a respectful caption, saluting her 70 years on the throne, will be disappointed.
But from the outset, the campaign against Charles is lacerating. In scene after scene, he is depicted as devious, impatient, resentful, devoid of self-awareness in his desperation to be king. This prince is a plotter whose mind works constantly, even during holidays with friends, on ways to dislodge his mother and force her aside. His aides talk of little else.
Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles – now the King and Queen Consort, a fact shamefully ignored by Netflix – suffer greater indignity still, with the replay of that excruciating phonecall. Dominic West as Charles and Olivia Williams as Camilla, then his married mistress, re-enact every word of it… including that awful extended metaphor about being reincarnated as a tampon. It is performed without mercy, and to emphasise the humiliation we see the reaction of other royals when the transcript is published. Princess Margaret reads it in bed. Diana holds her head in her hands.
[From The Daily Mail]
Charles “is depicted as devious, impatient, resentful, devoid of self-awareness.” “The Crown is now a nakedly republican polemic, using embarrassment as its chief weapon against the monarchy.” DON’T THREATEN ME WITH A GOOD TIME!!! Omg, I was genuinely worried that Peter Morgan was going to soft-pedal some stuff but I guess not! Apparently, Diana’s Panorama interview stretches over two episodes, which is pretty fair – it was the biggest f–king thing to happen to the monarchy in decades. I love all of the agitation about “they didn’t acknowledge that Charles and Camilla are king and queen now” and “they didn’t acknowledge QEII’s death!!” My dude, this is a dramatization of what happened in the ‘90s, not a documentary. In fact, the monarchy has run a huge campaign against the Crown to emphasize that it’s not a documentary. Anyway, one more week!!!

yay this sounds fab!

Top 6 Most Anticipated [Confirmed] BLs of 2023 (so far)!
If I can speculate...I'd add something something Semantic Error 2, something something Bump Up Business, but I'm tired of looking stupid. DMD had me placing Bed Friend as a most anticipated BL for damn near two years now and stayed coming up short. This time, I'm sticking to what I know. So, here we are--my top 6 most anticipated BLs of 2023 (thus far)! -
6) HIStory5: Love in the Future | LinusSean & JasonAnson
youtube
lbr, this is a 2023 bl trapped in a 2022 bl's body. Either way, I love a good time travel theme (gives fish out of water--my favorite trope!!) and the HIStory series usually gives us a good main couple.
5) Love Upon a Time | NetJames
youtube
Either DMD really believes in NetJames or they feel bad for cucking them in favor of ZeeNunew this past year. Either way, I am somewhat seated for this. Wild, I never expected this from NetJames or DMD more generally, but the historical portion of the story is giving everything I've been begging for from Thailand since I started watching BL. While it's not giving MileApo's period piece trailer in terms of care and attention to detail, it seems very interesting to say the least.
4) Bed Friend | NetJames
youtube
After 2 years of blue balling viewers, DMD is FINALLY giving the girls Bed Friend. I am so excited to see an office romance with actual tension between the leads and that forbidden love vibe I love so much. The story is so classic and seems entertaining from beginning-to-end. Hopefully the writing is good and the acting takes a step forward from what DMD has given so far. That said, the trailer looks promising, so fingers crossed!
3) The Next Prince (....what? It gave budget....) | ZeeNunew
youtube
Listen, I am not a zonzon or bonbon or ztormborn or whatever they call ZeeNunew stans, but I am SEATED for this. In my last list, I included Cutie Pie in my most anticipated list. Unfortunately, it didn't hit like I thought it would. But I'm willing to give them another chance as this trailer is intriguing. They're hitting budget, royalty AU, enemies (??) to lovers, direction, cinematography, etc. with this one. And the fact that the trailer was mostly silent gives me hope that maybe, just maybe, they will take the show-don't-tell subtext-led approach to acting and writing. Just hope it's not wasted on a terrible plot that goes nowhere and grating acting. S/n: Zee doing stuff w/feet again??
Tumblr media
2) Cherry Magic (Thailand) (stfu GMMTV antis and jbl elitists, I'm tryna see sth...) | TayNew
She has no trailer and I'm already here for her.
Tumblr media
Per MDL -
Adapted from Japan's 30-sai made Dotei Da to Mahotsukai ni Nareru rashii. Adachi Kiyoshi [Achi in the Thai version] is a regular salaryman who, at the age of 29, was still a virgin. On his 30th birthday, he suddenly finds himself acquiring a new power - the ability to read other people's minds whenever he touches them. Shocked and unnerved by this new ability, he struggles to cope. That is, until one day he accidentally touches the handsome and popular fellow office-worker, Kurosawa Yuichi [Karan in the Thai version], only to find out that [Karan] actually has secret romantic feelings for him. How will [Achi] cope with this new revelation?
Look, I tried the original Cherry Magic and while the concept was appealing, the execution wasn't for me. Ngl chefs, I was bored a bit. But I still love the concept and am interested to see if and how GMMTV and Taynew can handle this. It better give budget at the very least (probably won't lol). Perhaps we'll also see Newwie grow into a more serious BL role. But honestly, even if they turn it into a rom-com, I think this can really work. Either way, they have a lot of eyes on them and a lot of folks predicting their downfall. They must deliver.
1) Only Friends | NeoMark, ForceBook, FirstKhao, ForceNeo, to say the least
youtube
Where do I even start with this? Who in the fresh hell could have predicted GMMTV to come through with this? ALL the pairings are intriguing, MANY of the actors can ACT (or at least try to), THE PLOT is something straight out of my romance dreams!!! We love hotties being messy!!!! I am incoherent at this. How did GMMTV manage to outplay the player (ME)?
But to be serious, this is the most interesting BL plot in awhile... And it gets at a real part of the 20/30-something hookup culture that we have (and that people are afraid to show in the context of LGBTQ+ relationships). It's also breaking the mold and allowing actors to explore characters outside of their established ships. It's not adapted from anything (that I know of), which is, like, a first for a GMMTV BL. It includes pairings that are either on the rise (FirstKhao) or that no one could have ever seen coming but somehow feel just right (NeoMark, ForceNeo) (btw, NeoMark are up next in this industry ;)). Plus, it's directed by Jojo Tichakorn who directed and wrote for 3WBF (one of my favorite Thai dramas with a strong BL theme), and has his hands in Never Let Me Go and The Warp Effect (both with strong showings thus far). I trust him but it's gonna really come down to the budget, post-production, and, most importantly, the acting.
Thing is, Neo and First are going to show up and I trust Khao to give a strong effort. Force, I'm not too sure about but the trailer doesn't give me high hopes to be honest. Still, I'm willing to forgive if he can fuck Neo like he means it if the rest of the cast can pull their own weight. And for Mark, I'm willing to bet he'll improve from My School President (which he already is showing promise in). I'm mainly weary because the story looks to be told from Mew's perspective, who is played by Book. IMO Book is not the best....so I'm hoping he shows up. I just need it to really come together and Book holds the key to it in his hands. GMMTV already is a sketchy company for other reasons, don't waste my fucking time with yet another good concept gone by the wayside b/c y'all wanted face over talent.
Also NeoMark please don't be problematic. I want to love Badminton shawty and the best actor at GMMTV not named Gun ATP 😢

A drama rec list (with some special mentions for beginner learners*):
Guardian (my favorite, if you like Torchwood or Xmen this will be your kinda thing, search for it as it's on bilibili right now instead of youtube, language is case fic/supernatural geared, which I found useful later, also i just love this show to pieces)
Detective L (good for learners, a very Sherlock style setup and cases are relatively simple, fairly straightforward language for case shows)
My Roommate is a Detective/Checkmate (if you liked Detective L, this is another sherlock like case setup, with somewhat more complex plot but fairly genre specific words so if you tend to watch/read this stuff you'll adjust well)
History 3 Trapped (gay, cop/mafia, also technically about solving a murder case so the combo of case genre words and slice of life romance make this approachable and fun if you like action in your romance)
Bromance (Baron Chen stars, gender fun, also slice of life romance meets mafia boss with kickass civilian getting involved with mafia boss trying to turn his company legit Baron Chen, mostly slice of life language which makes it an easier watch but also some fun action fights for people like me who like that)
Love is More Than A Word/Till Death Tear Us Apart (two connected dramas, find them on dramacool or elsewhere uncensored. Good for learners who like explicit queer marriage in their period dramas, republican era spy/business boss enemies to lovers With Happy ending in their dramas, and these shows are hard dual subtitled which is nice for learners I think, a fairly basic short plot in both shows which makes the period historical of limtaw and republican era tdtua genre words easier to figure out)
Granting You A Dreamlike Life (a hot mess of a show, GREAT for learners I learned to watch Chinese shows just steamrolling through 15 episodes of this with only chinese subs. Features zhu yilong, a lot of romance cute and angst galore, some gangster action to appease people like me ToT, and a just ridiculous soap opera style plot to keep you going. Also it's particular story style makes it easy enough to follow even if you're mainly relying on actions and visuals. It's not 'good' let's say, but if you do happen to like it, it's a great easier drama to learn from)
The Lost Tomb (the yang yang one. Very short, great intro cdrama. It's got the cheapest cgi/visuals of all daomubiji dramas so if you can handle this then quality only goes up by gratuitous proportions until you get to Tomb of The Sea, Reboot, and Ultimate Note which look movie level budget. It's fairly straightforward Indiana jones/the mummy/typical Tomb raider story plot, some easy genre related words could get picked up here, also often available with dual subtitles)
Love and Redemption (I know, you're wondering why I put this beautiful 59 episode show I adore on the learner recommendations. A big reason, is that LaR decides to often just call characters by given name. So Chu Xuanji is often just "Xuanji" when being talked to or talked about, often a character only has one name. For a xianxia, this very simple naming scheme means it's easier to learn all the character names and clans asap. It also reminded me a bit of English when I watched, just compared to shows like The Untamed which tend to use family and given name usually "Wei Wuxian" along with alternate names "Wei Ying" and nicknames "Yiling Laozi/A Xian" for many characters. So I feel if you're a learner going into xianxia, Love and Redemption is going to stick pretty straightforward in at least learning names and clans. Then also it's one of my favorite xianxia ever so the story is satisfying. Alternative "easier" starter xianxia: Eternal Love Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms - it's not my favorite but it uses straightforward tropes that are staples in this genre and it is quite solid to follow the plot, Ice Fantasy - not particularly typical, I enjoy the plot on this one, naming conventions are also fairly straightforward).
Hikaru No Go/Qi Hun (a phenomenal adaptation of the Japanese manga/anime of the same name, on iqiyi and currently free on youtube, just absolutely lovely. Slice of life/coming of age/competition story. Lots of everyday kinds of words, competition and school story type words, fast paced which I liked, ghost in the story to add a supernatural flair to the realism of the rest, very heartwarming)
Go Ahead (a serious drama about a family, very good story. Honorable mention to The Bond which I did not finish but is another serious drama about a family, starring Bai Yu).
ANY modern romance drama you can think of (seriously, modern fluffy romance is the EASIEST genre of show to watch in chinese first, language is very simple and that's why Granting You a Dreamlike Life was the first show I watched in chinese - even in republican era, its a romance so the words were easier. I personally liked My Mowgli Boy cause I love Ma Tianyu and it's both dramatic and very silly at times, Advance Bravely - has gong Jun but it's a hot mess so definitely try it and take or leave it lol, Bromance as mentioned is good with Baron Chen, Romance of Hua Rong is a good simple costume drama romance, there's also usually one or two starring your favorite actors if you just look these kinds of dramas up by actor, Plus + Minus bl looks potentially this genre as well)
We Are Not Human (webseries with 5 minute eps, on youtube and some other places. It's supernatural vampire with his zombie boyfriend and other associates, it's a comedy, and it's short comedy skit nature means all situations tend to be slice of life with some easy visual cues making it quite approachable for learners who like wwdits type stories)
Some dramas I love but think are not going to suit all beginners:
Goodbye My Princess (amazing fantasy romantic tragedy)
Rattan (amazing actors, my favorite premise of "alien/mutant" living among humans handled in a heavy way with a very old powerful mutant woman and very mortal human man both played by phenomenal actors)
Bureau of Transformer (on iqiyi, Olivia Wang stars, absolutely best written sci fi I've seen in ages world wide, please give it a shot if you like sci fi case of the week social issue allegory stories a la Star Trek, Black Mirror, Torchwood, etc. One of my top favorite shows ever).
Humans (cdrama adaptation of a show that's had 2 other versions before. It's a sci fi story about androids, stars Ma Tianyu. Incredibly well done, great acting, best sci fi looks/budget I've seen for a cdrama. I've only found it in chinese with chinese subs but it was enjoyable enough and straightforward enough I watched. Absolutely worth it if you enjoy sci fi and liked the other Humans adaptations).
The Secret of The Three Kingdoms (its like an au fanfiction take on The Three Kingdoms full of beautiful people like the best empress performance I've ever seen, Elvis Han, Ma Tianyu, Tan Jianci. One of the period dramas I've most enjoyed).
Love Between Fairy and Devil/cang lan jue (best xianxia I've seen this year, definitely worth watching)
Once Upon a Time In Lingjian Mountain (a very fun time, silly, still pulls heart strings)
Killer and Healer (I watched this with chinese subs so it's doable, but it's an involved republican era crime drama so the plots a fair bit more involved than Detective L)
Word of Honor (watched this in chinese subs then English later so its doable for a learner, but some chinese in this is very poetic or very wuxia genre specific so there's some challenging parts to this, very followable plot if you're familiar with the novel. GREAT wuxia and drama in general so it's worth the watch).
Ultimate Note (dmbj show, I loved it, effects almost as nice as Reboot but shorter and snappier pace which I enjoyed. Reboot and all other dmbj dramas recommended for dmbj fans or perusers.)
LORD Critical World (I know the cgi is bad but its a fun time, Zhang Mingen fans get constant eyecandy, this show is Xena meets Drakengard 3 with a very gay feeling main duo that to me screams Moshang from svsss vibes, fucked up at times and comedic as much as it is dark and just ridiculously bizarre, certainly A Time which I appreciate in shows)
Couple of Mirrors (republican era gl, well acted, you could try watching this as a learner like Killer and Healer, the drama is short so like The Lost Tomb it's not a big commitment, also there's a manhua!)

Taare Zameen Par
The film that shook me up very deeply was "Taare Zameen Par." It precisely mirrored a dyslexic child, Ishaan Awasthi, trying to adjust to the school environment. This story touched me in multiple ways. Being an individual who gives great importance to education and inclusive world, witnessing the difficulties of the central character and the meaningful impact of the teacher, Ram Shankar, the thought still resonates in my head in the present. It encouraged me to think about the meaning of accepting and appropriately assisting people with learning disorder and creating a more empathetic and supportive environment. The movie's message about identifying and cultivating every child’s own skill and strength personally touched me, and it was the one that influenced my outlook toward education and how important is to have a personalized learning support. Today, I am part of support group called Decoding Dyslexia, which aims at helping people struggling with dyslexia. Ultimately, "Taare Zameen Par" inspired a deeper consciousness and involvement in supporting inclusion and empathy in schools.
Through my research of history, I discovered that "Taare Zameen Par" was more than just a movie, it came life from a deep motivation of understanding why some children sometimes struggle in traditional education systems. Written and produced by Amole Gupte and Deepa Bhatia, the movie is designed to raise awareness on dyslexia, and show compassion towards children who deal with learning difficulties.
The film proved to be a critical success, drawing the praise of numerous critics for the narrative, screenplay, direction, dialogues, background music and acting. And it was not only hearts touched but also entire nation sympathized with dyslexia and it was awarded at the 55th National Film Awards. The film was India’s Official entry for the 81st Academy Awards for the category of Best Foreign Language Film but failed to be nominated. At the 55th National Film Awards, it won 3 awards: : Best Film on Family Welfare, Best Lyrics, and Best Male Playback Singer.
Yes, the film “Taare Zameen Par” turned out to be a commercial success as well. The film was made on a budget of ₹12 crores. It grossed ₹98.48 core worldwide13 which made it quite a profitable movie. The marketers selected an emotional and educational approach through the actors' soul-touching performances and the music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy.
The producers highly depended on talented performances, compelling storytelling, and the power of the music to get back the cash due. Although the film made an attempt to discuss the sensitive topic of dyslexia, the film’s sensitive portrayal and emotional depth were powerful enough to target a wider audience even in the face of potentially limiting factors.
One limitation could have been the heavy subject of dyslexia, which might not connect with all viewers. Nevertheless, I believe the film's style and level of complexity will have defeated this obstacle and allow it to be attractive to many other viewers.
Even after many years, the film "Taare Zameen Par" is feted by critics. "The Film" was praised for its plot development, depiction of dyslexia, and representation of traditional education systems. The most recent reviews demonstrate that its influence doesn’t fade with time.
In all, "Taare Zameen Par" is the physical demonstration of the influence that cinema has on our lives, it evokes empathy, and questions the existing social construction making it timeless and significant of a film.
I think that this movie is very non-conventional film with creative approach in movie script. It part-ways with Bollywood formula by giving depth into sensitive subjects such as challenges of childhood, education system loopholes, and empathy. The movie's central theme of a dyslexic child's travels and his teacher's part in admiring and functioning his abilities no longer follows strictly Bollywood routines that are around romance or action.
Historical information coaligns with my memories which consists of the film dealing with critical and commercial success, Aamir Khan's direction, and its influence on raising awareness about learning differences. Nevertheless, my perceptive memories also give a feeling of emotion and connection, reminding me of episodes that were very important to me, for example, teacher’s patience and the child’s talent in arts.
When I re-watch this movie every week, I am now able to view the details and subtleties that were previously out of my scope. The cinematography, performances, and soundtrack even today continue to be a delight, but I now appreciate the movie's richness and meanings on a much deeper level since I now understand the underlying theme of societal pressure and the importance of individualism. Films have substantially evolved from the time when "Taare Zameen Par" was released. The stories are more centered on a variety of narratives, characters, and complicated subjects. Technology has not only changed filmmaking but has made it more involving by creating an immersive experience for the audience as well.
Following the release of the movie, there has been an increasing awareness and comprehension of dyslexia and other learning disabilities in India. The film urged citizens and organizations to get involved. For example, it brought about things like the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) allowing more time to special education children during examination. Additionally, the education administration at Chandigarh started to offer courses to teachers who work with children issues with learning disabilities.
Additionally, my perception of films is more complex now. Today I prefer films with profound meaning, social significance, and emotional depth. "Taare Zameen Par" will forever be a gem to me, because it shows that cinema can encourage, educate, and make people compassionate.
