So, most the One Piece fans in my life have been discussing the live action series, and, surprisingly, most with a hopeful tone. Which is great because, seriously, I'm too old and close to death to deal with either of the following preemptive attitudes:
"Look, I know trailer footage is not only often unfinished but not even always what gets included in the final project but based purely off the smallest of moments contained in this purely commercialized content, I can definitely state with absolutely no doubt that due to minor detail, the whole thing sucks"
"This will be just like I imagined it including all the changes I would make to canon that have never once been hinged at by those in charge, I just know it's going to be not just as awesome as I have created in my mind but even betyeyr and there is absolutely no way they'd ever make the slightest change that would somehow immediately ruin the entire property retroactively for me!"
The fact that most the people I interactive with are taking a positive but grounded attitude instead of determinedly antagonist or unhinged optimism is just... Nice. Really, really nice.
Most our discussions regard general aesthetic and what we think these creative choices indicate for the show, but there has been one area where 95% of all feedback has been glowly positive, and that is the actors. Seriously, every sneak peak trailer reveal brings about more fan-gushing from the bleachers (related note, this means that any characters we haven't seen gets more and more nails bitten short. Like, why haven't I seen the Benn Beckman? This is actually really important to me.)
This has lead to a lot of excitement for potential future cast members, including from the boys at my work. Which.... They are definitely fans, there is no denying that, but like... I don't think of as "those kinds of fans" .
But I'm always happy to be proven wrong.
AnimeDub Fan Coworker: I've never seen a more perfect live action adaptation than Mihawk in the trailer. The word. The eyes. The facial hair. Like damn.
Manga/Anime Fan Coworker: The cast looks so fucking on. I know this will never get a season 2, but if it did, the absolute dream would be for Jamie Lee Curtis to play Kureha.
Me: Yes, please. She's on my list of Characters I Have To See In Live Action. It's Law (obviously), Kid & Killer but particularly Killer, Ace of course, Robin because ROBIN, and Kureha who, yeah, is on the list cuz I want JLC or equivalent.
AD Fan: You just went off about how Garp was too hot but are cool with Jamie Lee Curtis as Kureha?
Me: Yeah, because unlike Garp, Kureha is canonically smoking.
AD Fan: Agree to disagree.
M/A Fan: They'll probably go for no names again like they did for this cast, but dream casting would be Alexandra Daddario as Robin. Boom.
M/A Fan: *With absolutely no further promoting from me* Ooooooh I got another fake casting. This one's for Kid. Cameron Monaghan.
Tumblr media
M/A Fan: He's played crazy before too. And he's really good at it. He was pretty much "the Joker" in the show Gotham. AND he was the gay brother on Shameless. So he can totally be pirate married to Killer!
Me: *Desperately trying to remember when I mentioned in my work chat - that includes a few non-geeks, like not just not OP fans but just straight up not up with geek culture - that Kid and Killer were Pirate Married, a phrase which is very much so mine.*
Me: *Decides it doesn't matter and just gives self a point to converting yet another normal fan straight boy around to the correct view of Kid and Killer's relationship.* Now we just need someone who can pull off the perfect 80 glam rock star AND NHL defense player and we have two more Supernoves cast and ready to go.
I don't know how I keep convincing these straight boys who have probably never read a fanfic in their lives to get behind Kid/Killer as canonical Pirate Husbands, but when one of the major considerations for fan-casting is, "would Mina find him suitable gay with Killer?" you know you've won. I'm not sure what exactly, but it's definitely a win.

Have you ever gotten the spontaneous urge to read a found family story where a bad guy adopts the batman backstory bros? Well I did! Sadly we don’t really get to see much of this cool alternate universe, but that single chapter has sent me spiraling! Only one chapter on Fanfiction.net but enough to raise possible ideas of angst between these three characters alone and would majorly affect their dynamics with Korra, Amon and Republic city.
Kinda wish there were any continuation. Even if they were just short moments!

Drabbles December!
I’m bringing them back. Taking the time off was definitely the right decision but I miss them and I miss writing in general. Also, the siren song of alliteration is not to be denied.
If anyone has a prompt they want to drop in the sheet, send me an ask! I have not yet made a spreadsheet so this is going to be a bit more slapdash than last time.

Spoilers: The Boys season 3
Warning: rant on new fandom in-coming (don't worry, this fandom is not going to become a mainstay on this blog).
I've been watching The Boys over the past few weeks, largely because I had heard The Boys was a good deconstruction of the superhero genre. And on the one hand, it is. But season 3 is increasingly making me kind of uncomfortable with the way that deconstruction is also just reinforcing the glorification of vigilantism, which is the bread and butter of the superhero genre. It's one of those cases where they are deconstruction the genre so thoroughly that they've looped back around to just reinforcing all of the same tropes they were deconstructing/critiquing in the first place.
Like... okay, vigilantism is appealing in theory, but you have to have the critical awareness to realize that "the heroic vigilante" is just a myth. It's a re-purposing of the Robin Hood legend. It gives us a single "good guy" who will stand up to the "the man" or "the system," and if he's a "noble thief," then the vigilantism becomes a good thing. It's not the bug, it's the feature. But the problem is that the myth of the "noble vigilante" is not real and it's not possible in real life. There is no case when it is good for one person to operate above and beyond the law just because "they mean well" or they make the case that they are best suited to handle tough situations (Cap's "the safest hands are our own" mantra is bullshit. It's appealing bullshit, but it's still bullshit). In real life, we need accountability. We need equal justice under the law (and yes I am well aware of how flawed the justice system is, thank you, but that doesn't mean we just throw the entire legal system out the window. We still need laws. We still need to strive for a more just society). Vigilantism is the antithesis of all of that.
But now here we are in season 3 of The Boys, and... we're rooting for the vigilantes again. Butcher and Hughie going off the reservation and teaming up with Solider Boy is exciting because we have seen over and over again that working within the system will never work, so obviously we are hoping that working outside the system and doing "whatever it takes" will prove successful. But... damn, that's dangerous. And I'm not sure if the show is self-aware enough to know that this is what it's doing.
On the one hand, sure, they've made it clear that Butcher and Homelander are the same in some ways, that they are mirrors for each other and both have the same core of ruthlessness and hate (although... do they? They are both ruthless, yes, but Homeland is driven by ego, a yearning chasm of insecurity, and an unquenchable lust for recognition; while Butcher is driven by the deep pain of loss, feelings of rage at his own helplessness, and an incessant fear that he is, in fact, that monster that he is fighting, the same monster that his father was. But I'm getting off track...). While in some ways, we know that Butcher isn't "right," that what he is doing is incredibly sketchy and far too similar to the worst of the Supes misdeeds... and while we do have Annie and M.M. both standing up to Hughie and Butcher to say, "yeah, this isn't the right way to do this, I'm not on board here, you're wrong and messed up to think this is all okay." But while the narrative tells us all of that, I think the vast majority of the audience feels that Annie and M.M. are right, but also that they're too naive. There is always a part of us, as viewers, that is going to be hoping Butcher will win, that he'll get to rip Homelander apart and put an end to this by killing all (or most) of the Supes. Right? It's not just me, right? I think we are still on Butcher's side, more or less. (Side note: I have no intention of reading the comics, but I have heard that Butcher is the final villain in the comics... but I don't believe that's where the show is going, not least of all because Karl Urban has succeeded in making Butcher sympathetic far too often for that to work).
So I can't decide if the show is just undercutting its entire point about the way power corrupts and we need oversight / accountability... or if it is intentionally playing with the idea that part of us wants to see the vigilante win and defy all of the rules, even while we know that it's wrong. Is the show that self-aware? I'm not sure. When I heard the premise of the show, it seemed obvious to me that this was a "Team Iron Man" philosophy that says no one should have unchecked power. But now... it seems to also be saying, "well, since the people/agencies that should be a check on power are all corrupt, the only way to stop those with unchecked power is to exercise that power ourselves." In essence... "the safest hands are still are own." And yeah, that's not it, my dudes. Whatever you think you're advocating for, this ain't the moral highground you're looking for. It's just leading us back to the simplistic glorification of the vigilante.
On another note...
I heard so many people call season 3 "a masterpiece" and I'm like... really? It's addictive, I'll give it that. And there are some pretty amazing moments of pathos where the actors manage to convey a lot with very little. It seems to be relying less on spectacle (with some exceptions) and giving the characters moments of quiet emotion. So there's a lot that's good here.
But there are way too many instances where they didn't even bother to write the gags and the supposedly "ironic" moments. They just straight-up ripped stuff out of the real life news. A-Train stars in Kendall Jenner's Pepsi commercial. The Deep tries to pull off the famous "Imagine video" from the early Covid days. The Hawk-whatever guy just parrots every apology we've ever heard from police departments whose officers have killed yet another unarmed black man. Gunpowder repeats straight-up NRA talking points. Homelander tells a female reporter "that's such a nasty question" when she asks a completely valid and innocuous question about what to tell people who feel scared of Covid... I mean, of Supe-terrorists. Like... you've run out of imagination and are now just taking Trump's dialogue from real press conferences and giving it to Homelander? At least last season there was a tiny veneer of distance between Stormfront and the "Stormchasers" and the real life Patriot Prayer/Proud Boys. But now... they're not even trying to make up these moments in the show or use a bit of creativity to reference real world events. We all saw the parallels (they were never terribly subtle) but those parallels worked better when they weren't just... copy-and-pasted from the hellscape that is reality. We've seriously lived this whole Trump-induced wasteland with his botched Covid response and deaming comments about women (and the "only I can save you" BS) and dumbass militias trying to drag us back to the past and racists giving shitty apologies and the celebrities trying to be relatable and failing because they only care about their brand. We don't need you to dramatize exactly the hellish bullshit what we've been living with for the past four years! It's just "change the names" copy-and-paste from real American life, which is occasionally funny, but is quickly becoming tiresome.
And in spite of all of those criticisms, I am still going to go right back to binge-watching the last two episodes today. Because it is addictive, even if the nihilism is definitely fucking with my head at the moment. Should there be a trigger warning for "do not watch this show when your depression is acting up"? Probably. But it's too late now, I'm already hooked, whether I want to be or not.

this is a poster i made for my call to action assignment in humanities! it's a bunch of basic and easy stretches for people who sit and work at a desk all day (me)
the idea is that you'd put the poster up above ur desk and do the stretches every 30 minutes or so,, the whole routine won't take more than about 6 minutes to complete and when done regularly it can prevent wrist, shoulder, neck and back pain! :)
all these stretches can be done while sitting (although i HIGHLY recommend you stand up and move around while taking a break from working)
you can get a free digital copy of this poster here on my gumroad!
and you can order a print/poster here from my inprnt!

Idk what writer needs to hear this, but when you are writing fantasy or scifi fiction what you writing is a translation. You don’t need to justify every word you use in the context of that universe. They might not have the brand tupperware, but your audience knows what tupperware is. You don’t need to invent an entire new origin of plastic containers. It’s quite literally impossible to justify everything in your universe and still write a compelling narrative. Remember that your universe exists to serve your story, not the other way around.

(click for higher quality!) draconified link concept ive been chipping away at this past week ..... here's my funny little compendium concept for him:
"A heroic spirit has taken the form of this bestial dragon. Unlike it's kin, this creature exhibits an extremely aggressive disposition. It appears highly territorial, and will relentlessly chase down those who disturb its skywide patrols - of which it seems to be endlessly searching for either a long-time vassal or foe. Unfortunately, it seems the spirit within has long since forgotten exactly who it was looking for…"

I NEED TO START A NEW TV SHOW, we have options
(We are doing another cartoon we won't discuss why)
* Dead End, paranormal park = 2 friends separately recommended this to me, apparently great representation and canon queer
* Gravity Falls = A classic I haven't watched (I'M SORRY)
* Avatar the last airbender = my sister is a big fan of it and I have watched half the first episode with her and I forgot to continue it
* Adventure time = it's another classic, and I'll be honest I'll only watch it for the (MAYBE CANON?! idk) wlw but I think it will take a WHILE and idk if its worth it
* Rick and morty = again, classic I've never watched that I don't think I'll LOVE but it's one of them I have to at least TRY, you know?
* Amphibia = THE SISTER SHOW!!! I do want to watch it desperately after my addiction to toh, it feels right to watch that next
There are more I am missing definitely but still, any suggestions and such are welcome

i love seeing out of context posts about long-running stories with deep lore because it's always shit like "MAJOR SPOILER WARNING!! i can't believe that the metallic athenaeum's envoy actually used never-ending dance of the 57th universe on rionne as if she's not LITERALLY the incarnate of august?!?!" it's like buddy boy thank you for the spoiler tag but all of those words are incomprehensible without at least 5 years of foreshadowed knowledge, 7 different fan theories, and 21 wiki entries

I see a lot of incomprehension online about our pension reform and the anger it generates in France, and what it often boils down to is "why are they so angry, 64 is plenty young to retire?"
I don't agree, but even if I did I would still oppose the reform. Here are some of the reasons why:
We already need 43 full years of work and tax contributions to be able to retire. Which means college-educated people were never going to retire at 64 anyway, let alone 62. This reform is aimed at people who start working early, mostly in low-paying jobs.
There's very little provision made in this law for hard/dangerous/manual labour.
There's no provision made for women who stop working to raise their children (51% of women already retire without a "complete career," which means they only retire on a partial pension, vs. 25% of men).
At 64, 1/3 of the poorest workers will already be dead. In France, between the richest and the poorest men, there's a 13 years gap in life expectancy.
Beyond life expectancy, at that age a lot of people (especially poorer, non-college educated) have too many health-related issues to be able to work. Not only is it cruel to ask them to work longer, if they can't work at all that's two more years to hold on with no pension
Unemployment in France is still fairly high (7%). Young people already have a hard time finding work, and this is going to make things even harder for them
Macron cut taxes on the rich and lost the country around 16 Billions € in tax revenue. Our estimated pension deficit should peak at 12 Billions worst case scenario.
While I'm on wealth redistribution (no, not soviet style, but I think there should be a cap on wealth concentration. Nobody needs to be a billionaire.): some of the massive profits of last year should go to workers and to the state to be redistributed, including to fund pensions. The state subsidized companies and corporations during the pandemic, Macron even said "no matter the cost" and spent 206 Billions € on businesses. Now he's going after the poorest workers in the country for an hypothetical 12 Billions??
Implicit in all of this is the question of systemic racism. French workers from immigrant families are already more likely to have started their careers early, to have low-paying jobs, are less likely to be college-educated, more at risk for disabilities and chronic illnesses, etc., so this is going to disproportionately affect them
This is not even touching on the fact that he didn't let lawmakers vote on it, meaning he knew he wouldn't get a majority of votes in parliament, or that 70% of the population is against this law. Pushing it through anyway is blatant authoritarianism.
TL;DR: This is only tangentially about retirement age. The reform will make life harder for people with low incomes, or with no higher education, for manual workers, for women—mothers especially, for POC, for people with disabilities or chronic conditions, etc. This is about solidarity.
Hope (sincerely) this helps.

for the amount of time i spend thinking about erika ishii, i do not post about them NEARLY enough
everything i've ever seen them in, they have been fully dialed in. they understand the genre, they understand the character they're playing, and they NEVER. FUCKING. MISS
my current dnd character is actually based on multiple characters of erika's that i enjoy. my character is a witch (like ame of worlds beyond number fame [thank you to the witch class playtest]) but she is also a brewer who grows weed and shrooms, and deals them, and does them (and her personality is very much modeled off of danielle barkstock in dimension 20's the seven)
i feel that many of my favorite moments from erika are often focused on other characters. but many of those character moments would not have been possible without erika's incredible roleplay and sense for storytelling
and when the moment IS focused on erika's character? spellbinding. groundbreaking. from ame talking to orima in the overgrown shrine to danielle getting a nat 20 at the masquerade ball, i always fall into the scene and feel it so deeply due to erika's skill and poise and commitment to the story being told
tldr i think erika ishii is incredibly talented and wonderful
