Reading Batman #138 has just confirmed for me that one of the main themes of Zdarksy's run is the line Bruce's loved ones (particularly the Robins) walk between Family and Soldier, and his struggle to separate the two

It's shown pretty plainly from Zdarksy's first Batman comic where Tim gets shot in the throat. In the heat of the moment, Bruce cradles Tim in his arms and calls him 'son', prioritising Tim's safety over evacuating civilians

But then in the car a couple of pages later, you get these amazingly horrific panels showing Bruce de-costuming Jason and Tim's bodies, referring to them as 'soldiers’

At this point I read his soldier description as almost sarcastically bitter - he clearly hates that ‘the mission' drives him to treat his sons like impersonal soldiers, but he does it anyway

And this is something Tim completely goes along with - Bruce doesn't even visit him in hospital, but he's back out soon after with a bandage still on his neck. When he's back in the field he has an argument with Batman that with hindsight feels like an obvious set up for Gotham War

Bruce questions Tim's judgement and berates him for something he did in the field, while Tim says that Batman can't control him

Bruce is, at this point in the story, pre-Zur, and obviously doing this from a place of concern for his son rather than as something more coldly militaristic, but it's still the same type of justification Zur will later use during his fight with the rest of the Bats

Batman #138 is when this turns on his head, when he becomes more drill sergeant than concerned father, where having a son in place of a soldier is a hindrance rather than a gift

And that’s the whole point of Gotham War - a lot of people have been bogged down debating the logic of Selina’s plan, when it was really no more than a MacGuffin to put the Bats’ fault lines on show and illustrate the strain of being a father to your soldiers

And if you’re viewing this with a completely cold, mission-first mentality, then Bruce-as-Zur is kind of right - he’s allowing the rest of the Bats, his soldiers, to essentially mutiny against him because he’s tied to them by his love. Obviously that’s a good thing, he absolutely should care about his children like that, but it objectively makes him weaker

Tying back to Tim getting shot - the most fatherly thing to do in that situation would be to damn their identities, prioritise Tim’s well-being and take him straight into hospital without wasting time with his uniform. That would ruin him as Batman, but it’s still something he considers out of love for his son. Throughout his run and especially in Gotham War, Zdarsky is putting that love to the test and exploring what’s more important to Bruce, justice or family

I could say a lot more about Bruce’s role as a parent (personally, while I do think he can be fatherly, there is something inherently unethical about sending your children to war - him and Batwoman’s dad have a lot in common in that regard imo)

Mostly I just love the fact that Zdarksy’s exploring the complex dynamics between Bruce and his Robins, and I can’t wait to see where he takes it

König can feel his teeth leaving indents in each other, his jaw clenched so tightly he thinks he might break it.

"That's funny I have a friend living in the city, maybe you know her," the cashier flirts, leaning against the register. Your groceries are already sitting bagged in your cart, this interaction should be over.

"Oh yeah because we all know each other in the city," you joke back, holding your card, waiting for the reader to pop up with your total. König knows full well that this little... boy is holding it hostage, dragging out the conversation past what's polite.

"Don't all the pretty girls have a group chat?" You laugh at his resulting smile. König's nails dig neat crescents into the palms of his balled fists.

"Stop," you bat away the compliment, "I don't think we could all fit in one chat."

He's not jealous. Not of some stupid barely twenty asshole. Not when you don't even know he's flirting. And yet...

And yet he's angry, upset, fuck. Jealous is not the right word. Possessive. That's a better fit for it. König stares down the cashier, glares under the shadow of his hat. His hand uncurling from its clenched fury to press against the small of your back, pull your attention back to your task.

You look up at him with big shining eyes, his perfect, pretty, treasure. All smiles because of a petty compliment from this nothing man. He eases up on his glare, smiling down at you with all the warmth you conjure in him.

"Is there a problem with your card Schatz?" He asks innocently. You drop your gaze to the card reader, tapping the screen with your finger.

"Did my card not go through?" You ask the cashier, König returns to his glowering as the stupid boy looks up at him. Apparently just noticing the giant shadowing you. He pales, straightening from where he'd leaned over the register, and quickly punches a few buttons to pull up your total on the machine.

"Uh, no," his voice cracks, he clears his throat, "No, I must've forgotten to finish the sale. You should be good now Mrs- uh-" he glances up at König again.

"No problem," You tap your card against the machine. Singular focus keeping you from questioning the end of the cashier's rush. At least he's smart enough to know who you belong to, not that it makes up for the way he spoke to you.

"Do you need any help to your-"

"She'll be fine," König cuts him off with a growl. The cashier nods quick enough to give himself whiplash.

"Of course Sir."

"All good to go!" You chirp, oblivious to the aggression pouring off of König. He fixes a smile for you when you turn back to him. "Ready?"

"Of course, hummelchen, lead the way." König nods, you grab the handle of your cart and push it towards the exit with a friendly wave at the cashier. He doesn't wave back.

When you get your groceries loaded in your car König stays hovering nearby, eyes fixed on the store. You frown and touch his arm to get his attention.

"You good?" You ask, his eyes snapping to you as soon as you speak.

"Of course," he reaches past you to close the trunk, "just thinking."

Which is why I never know what background noises are happening.

Therefore, I have no idea whose voice is in the preview because I assumed it was Top screaming since the sub was over him (even though I don't know why he would be the one to scream that statement).

Even if I watched the preview without mute, I wouldn't recognize the voices because I have had this show on mute since episode one. Screaming, crying, and singing = instant mute, which was the major vibe of the first episode. *Notice that only the Fucked-Up Five are in the shot!

If I had to guess though, I would say it's Tan saying that he will punish those who hurt Non because unlike Phi who lost focus and had a consensual university relationship with Jin,

Tan understood the revenge assignment, and since he was a good enough student to win a scholarship to study abroad in English and studied hard enough to duplicate a drug to make all these kids lose their minds in the woods, I doubt he would fail now. He very much exudes that unhinged energy only a perfectionist under immense pressure has after decades of being forced to be the golden child.

He gave up his education and dreams. His mom is dead. His dad told him he was no longer his son right before he died by suicide. His brother has been missing for three years, and his partner in crime is fucking up this group project by catching a case of feels as he eats another apple of sin!

Anyway, I should probably try to make some attempt at describing the event since. If I don't I'll just be barking/crying/hiding my face for the next twelve hours.

Basically--and I'm not sure this is going to be across the board, but it held true for Napoleon and Sebastian at least--each suitor has a birthday event this year instead of a separate story. Comte's won't be released until tomorrow, but they have posted a preview.

From what I gather, he talks a little bit about himself and reveals parts of his past that haven't come to light in the game yet. There wasn't really enough to convey a coherent narrative beyond attending a party, but the line displayed here does get across the larger theme:

Comte: (I don't need momentary pleasure or ephemeral affection any longer. Now that I know love, there's nothing but you.)

He talks about how the aristocracy have thrown parties and extravagant celebrations for his birthday for most of his life. But none of it has ever really made him happy, largely because he knows that they are attempts to strengthen and broadcast power relations within high society. While I don't think he means it's entirely devoid of well wishes, I do think he sees it as a nexus of influence--and thus, by nature, impersonal. And honestly, I don't think he's wrong about that; the higher the echelon in social standing, the more it requires performance to maintain the position.

That being said, there is a fascinating flashback where he remembers a pureblood telling him about how falling in love with a human is an experience of another caliber entirely. My understanding is that Comte was still a fairly young vampire at the time, so he didn't really understand what the person was getting at. It seems like the other pureblood was trying to convey the difference in feeling, perhaps the fact that humans are more grounded in accordance with how they live--the reality and necessity of change.

After reading this--and the recent 5th bday story--I can absolutely see how change is something Comte has a complicated relationship with. He's known a certain way of life for so long, has constructed a sensibility of distant, rational maturity. After all the heartbreak of his youth, and two very acute traumatic events in his life, I can see why he'd be so afraid of broaching any kind of proximity with another person. Because on some level it's so much easier not to put your feelings on the line, to never have to fear devastating loss. And that's to say nothing of the worry of being unable to measure up on behalf of another person, of letting them down.

I'm so excited to see the rest of the contents, but something about the preview made me equal parts giddy and enamored (all I do is kick my feet with excitement LOL). I think what gets to me with Comte is that he truly does love companionship as a place to rest, a place where he can be honest about himself and his feelings without fear of ridicule (and the same goes for MC). In a world increasingly obsessed with surface level performances of power, status, and emotion, it's hard not to feel his exhaustion to the core.

Also, because these lines at the end more or less destroyed me in the best possible way:

MC: ...The you who had nowhere to belong no longer exists. In much the same way...Abel, I belong to you. Comte: ... Comte: I wish I could say to myself all those years ago, the me who kept indulging in such paltry things. Comte: Until you meet MC, you will never know love... The warmth of MC in my arms filled me with such joy I was near tears. (I don't need momentary pleasure or ephemeral affection any longer. Now that I know love, there's nothing but you.) The moment my lips found hers, the sweetness lit a fire deep in my body. Comte: These cute lips that melt against mine, the heat of your skin, the love that envelops me in your embrace--always leaves me so deeply in love with you.
