just finished a full rewatch of OFMD season one, which i'd not done for a while, and am now deep in the shrimp emotions. Why is this show so good.
specifically i'm thinking about the beginning of 1x07 when Ed says he's thinking about leaving. On to the next adventure, etc. He says it so casually, like it's no thing at all, and it makes me wonder how that scenario might have played out.
There was a meta i read shortly after the season aired (sorry, can't remember who wrote it) which said basically the plan to leave is Ed's way of protecting himself. By that point Ed knows he's falling for Stede, they've had their almost-kiss in the moonlight, their tender bathtub moment. Ed knows, even if it's only subconsciously, that if he stays he'll just fall deeper and harder and that will leave him vulnerable in a way he's not quite ready for.
so i wonder what would've happened if he had left then. Not with Calico Jack in all the heat of fraught emotions but on his own terms before his feelings for Stede grew beyond his ability to control them. i wonder how he'd have coped with losing Stede then.
because at that point, he's got no real reason to think his feelings are reciprocated. Stede clearly likes him, says flat out that he's Ed's friend, but nothing he's said or done would lead Ed to believe it's anything more than that. And Ed, as we know, is convinced he's unlovable so of course in his mind Stede could never love him.
which means that if he'd left then he wouldn't actually have lost anything. Stede and the Revenge could be kept as a lovely memory of a brief good time in his life. He might pine a bit, maybe give himself the luxury now and then to think about what if, but i don't believe it would ever reach the point of painting cake toppers or even crying in a dressing gown. i think, honestly, that had he left then Ed would've been okay, or at least not significantly worse than he was before. Still bored, still wanting to get out of piracy, still feeling sad and lonely and unloved but at least he'd have the memory of his friend.
what eventually renders that scenario impossible--what makes him leaving on his own plausible while he could never truly have left with Calico Jack ("never left")--is that by the end of episode 7 Ed has started to have hope. He's started to think that maybe his feelings aren't one-sided. Maybe he can actually have Stede. Maybe he can actually be happy.
i've often thought (as ofc have others) that it wasn't the loss of Stede as such that brought on the kraken era. If OFMD had ended with a successful talent show and Ed and the crew deciding to be a sailing theatre troupe instead of pirates, even without Stede, Ed would've been okay. Broken hearts mend. What tipped Ed over the edge was the loss of his hope, and the better life he thought he'd found a way to have.
not quite sure where i'm going with this if i'm going anywhere, just... it's an interesting contrast and imo a quiet turning point that neatly underlines just how important this is happening really was.

I couldn’t say Turing blue.. it sounds bad lol
As a teenager he lived a simple life in the city, until he turned 15. Of course this is when his hair turned from black to blue, and he’d transform into a giant ravaging panda. His panda is unique, changing size based on ferocity of his emotion at the time. (I actually got this from what Turning Red originally planned on doing)
Wally had little to no control over his panda, and immediately did the ritual to hide away his panda when a full lunar eclipse arised. His panda is hidden in his two crosses, which he puts on his sleeves. Wally was still afraid of the chaos and harm he caused as a panda, and ran away, vowing to always keep his emotion in check.
which leads us to our little neighborhood, and Wally has made lots of friends! He is known for being monotonous, though he’s actually quite emotional, he’s just very good at keeping his emotion under raps. That is, until he brakes his crosses and his hair turns blue-

let's think about this seriously, for a second.
oliver has said in an interview that yes, buck knows he is jealous, but he doesn't know why he is jealous (yet).
arielle was supposed to be the one to come back to pick up her role as lucy, but since she was unable to, due to filming a different show at the time- tim asked lou to come back. tim said he specifcially wanted someone who was already apart of the 911 universe, he wanted someone who had a bit of history with everyone.
that being said... if lucy was the one that came back and grew a closer bond with eddie, how would that be revolutional? why would oliver feel "a sense of responsibility" if buck was to only have a silly crush on her and be jealous that eddie was spending time with her?
the thing is- it simply wouldn't be.
tommy/lucy were always meant to act as a plot device to help buck realize his feelings for eddie. i am so certain of it.
one more thing! why have oliver say that the 100th episode- specifically talking about buck's storyline- would change the entire series....
.... if it was just buck being canonically bisexual. it wouldn't. but you know what would? learning that buck has been in love with his best friend, someone who is also a main character in the show, and a bonf we have gotten to witness since the very beginning (at least since season two lol but still!)
buddie is happening, and i officially have zero doubts at this point.

I haven't done any cinematography/camerawork meta analysis threads recently and it's making my brain itch. So here's a small analysis of how negative space is used in the show to express characters' emotions. This is the first in a series.
The use of greenery in negative space in episode 1x7: This Is Happening
First, Jim stands alone in a field with Olu small in the distance, reflecting Jim's mindset of being on their own, isolated. We know from Olu that Jim doesn't talk much about their personal past, and this shot is right after Jim confronts their past, which turns negative.
They isolate and go to their old land, seeking comfort in the openness and of the past: where everything changed.
Olu follows them, not leaving Jim alone in this vast negativity: literally and figuratively.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next, Olu and Jim face each other, with space in between them, a stone wall behind Jim, and open space behind Olu. This once again reflects their mindset.
Jim opened up to Olu, telling him the truth about their past, introducing him to the person that raised them. Shooting them in profile, completely facing each other shows how open they are now after that previous shot: they are on equal footing, no longer Jim with their back turned to Olu in the distance.
While they are drawn to one another — they almost kiss — what is behind them foreshadows the end of the episode.
Jim still has a wall behind them — they have decided to continue on their journey of revenge — and therefore must leave. Olu on the other hand, has open space behind him because he is open to Jim and whatever is happening between them.
Tumblr media
Now moving into the A storyline of Lucius, Ed, and Stede. This overhead shot consists of mostly neutral colors, the only pops are the fire, the purple of Ed, and the green leaves. Ed and Stede sit right next to each other, but their bodies are turned inward, knees almost touching. (This exact same position happens multiple times throughout the show including in 2x4 on the couch in Mary and Anne's home.)
The green is attached to the humans, especially to Ed and Stede, and it being the main pop (along with a kindling, warm fire) in this scene reveals what is important in the scene: the people.
Tumblr media
When we move to the two shot, Lucius still dirties the shot in the foreground, but the focus is on Ed and Stede. Just like with Olu and Jim, there is a small space between them and larger space on each side, particularly the green is more on Stede's side, but Ed's purple shirt — which shows his growing feelings for Stede — is out and proud.
That kindling, warm fire is now shown between Ed and Stede, bringing that metaphor up front in this angle.
This whole episode is Stede subconsciously trying to get Ed to stay. His space on his side is open and green, just like his feelings for Ed.
A large palm tree sits behind Ed in his space because his feelings are shown through his purple shirt. Just like Stede, he has growing love for him but isn't as open at this point. (Lucius talks to him about not being a dick and Stede has feelings for him.)
Tumblr media
I also love this shot when both the A and B plotlines merge together.
Stede is in the same position as when he looks at the ruined, burned map, but this time he's excited, he found the treasure. Ed and Lucius are on one side and Jim and Olu on the other, Stede bridging the storylines and characters.
Greenery, the stone wall, and particularly the sun are the bright spots in this shot of mainly neutral colors. The sun shining down on all these characters shows how their relationship has changed since the previous shots/beginning of the episode. Olu and Jim are about to split up so they stand in more darkness, while Ed and Stede are right under the sun, the light that is used throughout the show to represent their love (especially Stede's — but that a whole other post I'm working on) is bright and center.
Tumblr media
And I'll end with this shot, which unfortunately is cropped, but in the full shot there is open space on either side of the couple. But luckily I want to focus on the space between Ed and Stede. The space here is bridged by their hands touching and holding the petrified orange. (Later on, Stede talks to this orange, calling it Edward in symbolism of his new versus old life).
Stede and Ed parallel Olu and Jim's earlier shot of facing each other but they complete the gap and touch. Their relationship has changed by this point, they are closer: emotionally and physically.
The negative space used in these shots show us the emotional state of the characters, from the green space around them showing their isolation, to by the end the greenery space shows how they have become closer.

every once in a while i think about ED and STEDE and how they're IN LOVE and stede KNOWS NOW and ed is HEARTBROKEN and stede's going AFTER HIM to CONFESS and they'll have to WORK THROUGH THINGS and come out on the other side STRONGER IN THEIR LOVE and figure out how to have a REAL RELATIONSHIP and there are multiple PET NAMES ON THE TABLE and the mermaids are fucking HOLDING HANDS
and this is all the literal actual story of the show
and i realize i'm not fucking ready
i'm not emotionally or spiritually or mentally ready to experience this love story what the fuuuuuck i'm still recovering from season one i guess i'll just fucking perish!?!?!?!?
