#this is a j*hn winchester hate blog
when I say "this is a J*hn Winchester hate blog", I'm referring to SPN-John, not The Winchesters-John, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt because he's literally a different person but he's still on thin ice. don't know why we're spending so much time rehabilitating his reputation though when there's so many other characters we could focus on...

We need to stop calling both Johns just simply John bc i kinda like the one who seems to be capable of growth and actively tries to work on his anger issues and various problems, but absolutely hate the guts of the other that neglected his kids and used the memory of his wife as an excuse to go on a pointless crusade so my brain craves a clear cut distinction

you're hopeless if you can't handle a single post humanizing john or challenging popular fandom perspectives of him or even just gifs involving him without going 'fuck j*hn winchester' 'he's evil' 'this is a john hate blog' like genuinely hopeless. do you need to make a psa every time you talk about him? is he on your dni? did you get a restraining order? you say you love morally grey characters but you can't even handle john winchester.

Sins of the Father - Brother!Dean Winchester x trans!reader (he/him)
TW/CW: Transphobia, J*hn Winchester, misgendering/deadnaming, parentification, child ab/se (not explicitly physical), fairly heavy swearing (uncensored).
Summary: (y/n) was the middle kid. While Dean was tasked with watching Sam, (y/n) took it upon himself to keep them both happy. Scrounging up actual food for them to eat, helping Sam with his schoolwork. He was always there for the boys, and for John Winchester too. When he came out as trans, his world changed. Years later, when he gets a call from his older brother, there are some hard conversations to be had.
****NOTE: Reader is not purposefully deadnamed, but they don't come out to everyone until the end of the story.
--------------------------------------
"Don't you dare tell the boys about this-- this phase you're going through-- because that's all it is, a phase. Nobody needs to know. Don't ruin our family name like this." Your father's words rang in your ears. That was the most important, and worst, night of your life. You had been 17, two years younger than your brother Dean. You dreamed of going to college, and escaping the nightmares that plagued you. Monsters and fires and gunshots that never stopped ringing in your ears. You wrote scholarship essay after scholarship essay, praying that you would win enough money for a free ride.
Escaping John Winchester was just an added bonus.
He had always been gruff, to put it kindly. Dean idolized him, which you could never understand. He was never kind, unless your definition of kind was forgetting birthdays, Christmas, and that children need to eat. While Dean kept Sam busy, you would scrape together leftover pennies and pocket change to go to the store. Occasionally, a kind younger woman would see you counting out coins at the register and would pay for your groceries. Other times, when you weren't so lucky, you would wear Dean's jacket. The pockets were large, and it was baggy enough on you that you could fit a fair amount of vegetables in without looking too suspicious.
Sammy loved fruit. His favorite was always blueberries. You had picked them on the side of the road once, when John took Dean on a hunt. Dean would never have let you run off to pick fruit like children, but it's still one of your fondest memories. The more you looked back on your childhood, the more you realized that there was a massive dearth of joy.
Dean grew up as obedient as ever, idolizing the father that made him grow up far, far too fast. Sam rebelled with the fury and passion of the sun. From what you've heard from old hunting contacts, they both became the good soldiers their father wanted. But time was not as kind to (y/n) Winchester.
---------
The motel room was pitch black that night, with only the screen of your father's laptop lighting your path to the bathroom. Dean and Sam were both sound asleep in the other room. You must not have heard the Impala pull up, but surely enough, when you came back out, John was sitting at the desk. He stared at the open laptop, silently reading through every tab.
"So." He stood up slowly, turning to face you. The room had been warm just moments ago, and you would rather be anywhere else than standing in front of an angry John Winchester. “I do so much for you kids, you know that? Do you know what I do for you, (d/n)?” Your body shook as he spoke, keeping his voice low as to not disturb the boys. “I feed you, I pay for the motel rooms, I keep you safe; I could’ve dropped you off somewhere and never come back, but did I? No.” You bit your tongue, knowing that talking back wouldn’t end well for you. “And now you want to run off to college, abandon your brothers, and you’ve gotten sucked up into this liberal bullshit? This transgendered shit? You want to ruin the Winchester name?”
You stared down at your feet, wanting nothing more than to run. “Sorry,” you muttered, not really knowing what to say.
“Sorry?” John took a step forward, coming dangerously close to you, and you backed up. “Sorry doesn’t cut it. Don't you dare tell the boys about this-- this phase you're going through-- because that's all it is, a phase. Nobody needs to know. Don't ruin our family name like this." He paused, taking a deep breath. “In fact, get out. If you want to leave so badly, than go.”
Your eyes widened and you felt tears well up. “What?” You couldn’t get your voice to come out as anything louder than a whisper. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’ll forget all about it I swear.” He didn’t react to your pleads, but pointed at the door.
“You made your choice. I expect you to be gone by daybreak.”
“Can I,” you wiped your eyes, not entirely sure when you started crying. “Can I at least say goodbye to Sam and Dean?”
“No. They won’t hear anything of this. Now go.” He walked into the bathroom, shutting the door and leaving you to collapse onto the dingy motel carpet.
You had wanted to leave. All you had ever wanted was to have a normal life, free from monsters and hunting. But not like this. You wanted your brothers to be with you. You wanted family movie nights and studying for tests together. Getting kicked out, effectively disowned, was never the plan, but you supposed it was your life now.
You were used to gathering your life into a duffle bag, so you habitually packed your bag, prepping to leave. Your eyes lingered on a small photo. You visited a town during the county fair, once. There was a photo booth, and you begged and pleaded with your father to let you take a few pictures with your brothers. He had denied you every time, so you wound up getting a dollar from an elderly woman to do it anyways. Old women were always easy targets; grandmothers were always nice to sweet little girls.
When John found out, he was fuming, but it was worth it for that picture. All three of you got one, promising to each other that you wouldn’t lose them. You tucked it into the inner chest pocket of your denim jacket and took one last look around the motel room. “I’m sorry Dean. Sammy,” you whispered to the empty room. “Take care of each other.”
You left the motel, calling Bobby’s cellphone and going straight to voicemail. “Hey, um. It’s (d/n). I have something I need to tell you. Where are you? Call me back soon.”
You figured it would be easiest to go to his cabin in the woods, and thankfully, he was waiting with the door propped open. “(d/n),” he grumbled and locked the door behind you. “What is it.” You could tell that he was tired, but he had always been like a father to you. More than John was, anyways.
“He,” you took a deep breath, forcing yourself to accept it. “He kicked me out.” You waited for the shocked look on his face, but he just nodded.
“Yeah, I figured. He’s done it to Dean too. What for?” You shifted uncomfortably, not ready to come out, but having no choice.
“He found out that I’m trans.”
You got the shocked look you were anticipating before. “Well,” he forced himself to stay calm. “I guess I have a son now.” You stared at him, looking around the room before you realized that he was talking about you. “Do you have a new name?”
“(y/n),” the tears came back as you told someone your name for the first time. “(y/n) Bobby Winchester.”
You lived with Bobby until you were through college. Every time John or your brothers came by, you had to hide somewhere. Usually he would just get you a motel room, and call you when it was safe to come home. Other times, you stayed in your bedroom and only came out when Bobby gave you the okay.
You put yourself through school at your local community college, and then won a scholarship to get your bachelors. Life was turning up for you, and you had a retail job that you hated most days. Still, you had a sense of normalcy. A small apartment, just big enough for you and your cat. A few houseplants.
You got a call one day. The area code showed that it was from Kansas, and for just a moment, you hoped it was your brothers.
“Hello?” you picked up the phone.
“Hi. Is this (d/n)?” You froze, not having heard that name in years. “My name is Dean.” Dean. Dean, it was Dean, your brother was calling you, after almost a decade of no contact, he was calling you.
“Dean?” You whispered, tears welling up in your eyes. “I missed you. I’m so sorry. We need to talk, okay?”
“Yeah,” you heard another man in the background, but it wasn’t a voice you recognized. Maybe it was John, but you doubted that he’d let your brothers call you. “Can you come to Bobby’s? Quickly?”
“Yeah,” you started towards the front door. You had been hesitant to stray too far from him, even as you distanced yourself from hunting. “I’ll be there in an hour, tops.”
A few traffic laws were broken, but you got to Bobby’s house in just over half an hour. You were nervous, considering you looked-- and sounded-- completely different. As you slammed your car door, you saw the Impala outside Bobby’s house, and your chest tightened. You hadn’t seen that car in so long, and you hoped that your brothers wouldn’t hate you.
You took long strides, making it to the front door faster than you knew was possible. “Dean,” you whispered as you turned your key in the lock. “Sam.”
They were sitting in the living room, and their knees bounced as they drank shitty beers with Bobby. You never did like the same stuff as them, although if you were asked, you were a good kid who never drank underage.
Bobby stood when he noticed you, and your brothers followed suit, turning to face you. "Bobby," Dean cocked his head. "This isn't our sister." He raised his hands before shuffling into the kitchen; he knew this was a conversation between the three Winchester boys.
"You never had a sister," you sighed. "There's a lot that I have to explain, but you sounded like you had news, so you go first." Dean cocked an eyebrow, but he gestured for you to sit. You sat in your armchair, the one facing Bobby's. Where John used to sit whenever he came.
"Dad is dead," he spat out, not pausing to take a shaky breath like people usually do when they announce their fathers' deaths. When your face stayed deadpan-- hell, even lifted a bit-- his eyebrows furrowed. "You don't look surprised."
"Look," you shrugged. "No offense, I know you idolized him, but he was dead to me the day he kicked me out. Now there's just a grave for me to dance on."
"He what?" The other man turned to you.
"Oh my God," you exhaled shakily and stood, walking towards him. "Oh, Sammy, look at you. It's been so damn long." He laughed gently, more of a huff than anything.
"Yeah, well, maybe if you hadn't left-" He took a step towards you, and you slapped a hand over your mouth.
"That's what he told you?" You laughed, falling back into your chair. "That's what that rat bastard--" Dean stood to protest. "-- told you?" you paced angrily, waving your hands around. "He told you that I left you? That's just so fucking like him, isn't it. Blame other people, it can't be his fault, no, because he can do no wrong."
"(d/n)," Dean reached out to you, but you slapped his hand away.
"(y/n). My name is (y/n). My name has been (y/n) since I was 17, and your father kicked me out for being transgender."
You could've heard a pin drop. Bobby just stood there, daring Sam and Dean to argue. Daring them to tell you that you were lying.
"Look," you sighed, looking between them. "I know not to speak ill of the dead. I know he's probably saved both of your lives several times, and you'd feel guilty if you didn't love him." They held onto your every word, although the way they stared made you question if they were listening or still processing your coming out. "I had no choice. To survive, to cope, I had to learn how to cut him off. We didn't deserve a lot of the shit he pulled. He was not a good father."
"(y/n)," Sam whispered. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. You always took care of me, and I believed that you'd leave." You smiled at him, standing with your arms open. He strode over to you, falling into your embrace. "I missed you."
"I know, Sammy," you traced a circle on his back. "I missed you too. Both of you," you added for Dean, moving one arm in an invitation to join Sam in your arms.
He accepted silently, and you sniffled, letting go of Sam to wipe your eyes. "I wanted to say goodbye." Both of them inhaled sharply, and your sad laugh made their hearts ache. You could guess what he had told them, and you weren't surprised. "I wish I said it anyways."
The three of you stood there in teary silence, and you stole a sip of the beer left forgotten on the coffee table. You grimaced at the taste before the three of you broke into comfortable chuckles. There was a lot for you all to catch up on, but you were just glad to have your brothers back.

I was watching 2x20 and when Dean is crying at John’s grave asking why they have to be heros, why can’t they live a normal life, my mom (who has seen like a few episodes 8 years ago that she barely remembers and like bits here and there from when I’m watching) unprompted, immediately went “Yeah, why can’t they” and something along the lines of him being an asshole and bad father. This was her first exposure to j*hn content (and wasn’t even the worst j*hn has been and I had never told her anything about j*hn so there was no bias from me) and her immediate, first reaction was he’s a bad father, I don’t make the rules but uh....

I’m back on my bullshit and we have GOT TO TALK about 13x08 The Scorpion and the Frog; which serves as a good example of why you should not ONLY watch spn episodes with Cas (partially because of that scene I shamefully blogged about earlier - no I will not link that cursed post here).  The episode title comes from a fable in which the villain is the scorpion.  Interpretations of this fable note its uniqueness lies in the concept that “the scorpion is irrationally self destructive and fully aware of it.”
Tumblr media
To quote the scorpion, buddies -  “it’s in my nature.”
Anyway, this episode is subtextually predicated on exploring Dean Winchester’s nature and specifically - his bisexuality, and I’m not only saying that because it opens with Dean in his Bi Colors Plaid (that also he wore on his burger date with Cas).
Tumblr media
Let’s get started, after the cut!
Season 13 on its face gives me absolute whiplash because it starts widow arc-reunion-TOMBSTONE and then Jack yeets himself off to Chuck knows where so Cas can go out Looking For Him Because Otherwise He Will Definitely Kiss Dean there is no other option for the writers at this point.  Sigh.  Here, have another shot of Dean anxiously cleaning his gun as he always does when Cas has Gone Off For Reasons -
Tumblr media
Anyway, this feels like a filler episode at first, but as always they bury the ENTIRE damn world in it and I am here with my dossier to Unearth It.
Lets start with Bart (demon of terrible nicknames and microagressions) meeting the brothers at Smile Diner to talk about some spell or whatever.
Tumblr media
(I am not thinking about the Cherry Pie meta I AM NOT)
THEY HAVE THE AUDACITY to start with these lines immediately introducing the theme of duality, a thread throughout this episode.
BARTHAMUS
Everything. I've been following your careers a long time. You're a real pain in the pitchfork. And the halo. Natural disrupters. We have that in common, you and I. DEAN
Mm. Yeah, we're twinsies.
***MORE DUALITY!  But as we know, Dean does not like Bart because He Is A Freakin’ Demon
DEAN
Well, see, here's the thing. When a demon tells us to jump, we don't ask how high. We just ice their ass.
Tumblr media
UMMM excuse me Barting Bacting Boices?  What is that sexual gaze?
Then we find out that Bart has 1/2 of the spell.  They need the other 1/2.  Oh, a spell with two parts, you say? [ I am going to scream :) ]
***Also, Dean eats the pie Bart ordered.  I cannot begin to explain to you the state of unwellness that I am in regarding how important this is. DEAN NEVER GETS TO EAT THE PIE, remember?  But in This Filler Episode, Dean eats the pie. While Sam looks at him with a very quizzical expression.  Pie -> what Dean wants but never actually gets -> Dean actively eating this pie.  Dean is coming to terms that maybe he can have what he wants.
***I am reminding you again that this is post widower-arc, post-reunion, and especially post-Tombstone.  Anyway-
Now we get to Smash and Grab.  Not literally even though I want to Commit Such Conduct at this point.  We are introduced to two one off characters named
Smash (human/female presenting) -  can crack any safe built by man
and Grab (demon/male presenting)-  expert in bypassing supernatural security.
Reaching or no, you can’t disagree that when spn introduces one off characters - it is almost always a Narrative Parallel or Mirror.
So we have a human and a demon (and Dean Winchester, a human who has been a demon)
who are experts in cracking open/bypassing something that has been secured and guarded (breaking down walls, if you will).
Tumblr media
They also use fake names identifying them as Tools to be Used ( Dean Winchester, the Michael Sword/daddys blunt little instrument)
BONUS:
Dean himself is literally used as a tool in this episode.
Tumblr media
So yeah.  Smash and Grab are physical representations of Dean’s duality.  Human/Demon.  Femininity/Masculinity.  Dare we say something else, too?
Anyway, Dean is paired with Smash and Grab; Sam is off to idk negotiate weird artifact purchases lawboy style with Luther Shrike, a man who cannot die so long as he never leaves his house (I cannot even begin to unpack this shit; please just sit there and think about it.  I’m not even going there here.  I CANNOT DISCUSS Luther Shrike RN).
Speaking of things I cannot discuss without halgdhsag;lsa - Smash has very Specific boots (a look overall, really).
Tumblr media
DEAN
Hey, Winona. The '90s called. They'd like their shoes back. SMASH
Shh.
***That’s right girl - do not take his shit; he actually LOVES them and is therefore Overcompensating for it with this little jab.
***Dean’s pop culture references and particular attention to the details here Should Not Be Overlooked.  90s! Winona! Ryder!
ANYWAY, then Dean and Smash bond over a caffeinated beverage -
[While Dean is doing a spell, Smash opens a can of drink, takes a mouthful and burps loudly. ] SMASH
Ahh. DEAN
You're weird.
Tumblr media
***This scene makes me literally insane. (even aside from Dean living on something named NERVE DAMAGE as a KID.  They could have called it anything. You’re saying this wasn’t a Choice)
She chugs a swallow of the drink and burps.  Something stereotypically associated with masculinity.  Not feminine.  Dean’s reaction is that she is “weird” - because she is not acting in a way stereotypically, J*hn Winchester brain-rot patriarchy bullshit-tily associated with Being Female.  But also, says the stupid show, they like the same soda.  They are The Same.  She shares the soda with Dean.  HIS FACE WHEN SHE DOES -
Tumblr media
Other similarities are addressed throughout the episode (they are working for demons because they have no choice; they don’t discuss feelings/emotions, they both sold their soul, they both This Thing -
DEAN
You know, we could help you. SMASH
No, you can't. I gotta take care of me.
etc. etc.) Smash is absolutely dean-coded.
****Also it’s textually established that Smash thinks Dean is attractive -
GRAB
[looking at Smash] Oh. You said he was just a pretty face. SMASH
Shh.
Tumblr media
***But Grab flirts with him too.
DEAN
I will kill you. GRAB
I bet you say that to all the girls.
***sorry, Grab - you won’t get far with Dean, but only because as he mentioned in the beginning of this episode -
Tumblr media
Drowley rights.
Now Dean has to put his hand in the mouth of this stone lion thing and all of a sudden he is acting....very-not-like-Dean.
Tumblr media
[Dean looks again and takes a deep breath.] DEAN
I… how about this? What if I cut myself, put it on, like, a little piece of paper? We'll just wad it up and throw it in the mouth, okay? Okay.
***Dean Winchester, who has been to Literal HELL, who has been torn apart by hellhounds, who has battled the devil and angels and God’s sister - all at the expense of his own life is now - afraid of spiders.  Well, technically he has always been afraid of spiders, but why isn’t ‘he being performative about it At This Time??
***Come to think of it, this sends me right back to how Jackles was playing Dean in 12x11 Regarding Dean THE episode dissecting Dean’s performative masculinity [one day I will clean up and post that analysis sitting in my drafts like a sad hamster]. That makes sense actually, because -> -> ->
that episode and this one are both written by Meredith Glynn.  Girl get in I want to torture you affectionately with a barrage of questions.
So here we have Dean and he’s not performing for Reasons, and he’s scared he’s genuinely scared of putting his hand in this stone lion-gargoyle-pig-creature’s mouth and then -
Tumblr media
Smash gives him a push.
She gives him a push.  I cannot stop thinking about how she gives him a push.  A push to go do this thing that he is scared of; his fear being something he was hiding under his performative masculinity. Smash - dean coded dean mirror who does not perform femininity and is ‘weird’ -  she   gives   him   a     p u s h.
***linking here for the jackting joices that follow.
Now, let’s circle back to Smash’s story; why she is working for Bart in the first place -
SMASH
You think I wanna be here? Like I have a choice? SAM
You made a deal. SMASH
Wow! You think? SAM
You sold your soul. SMASH
And if I could take it back, I would.
Tumblr media
there is no reason for this picture here other than I needed you to see the jackting again
***How does the story end for Smash?
DEAN
Take care of you. [Dean glances down at the box, and then at Smash. She sees that Dean has put a lighter on top of the bones.]  BARTHAMUS
Alice, chop chop!
[Bart indicates she should get his bones]. SMASH
Yeah. [She grabs the lighter and sets Bart's bones alight. Bart screams as he bursts into flames. ]
***She accepts help and breaks free from the narrative, literally burning it down. The female presenting but not female-performing “weird” ooc representing a side of Dean breaks FREE because she makes a choice.  The lighter Dean drops? It’s a push.  And she goes with it.
Alice reclaims her story.
(Also, Grab gets ganked.  The male presenting ooc; the performative masculinity side; the demon; the darkness; the not-humanity - gets ganked).
Guess what Dean says to Alice when they say goodbye?
DEAN
Hey, Alice. Stay weird.
Tumblr media
[I know the peace sign is probably just a Charlie throwback but I’d still like to say duality.  Two. ]
Dean’s not just talking to Alice.  He’s talking to himself; because the walls have been breached and for once Dean isn’t as scared of being different.  Maybe, just maybe, he’s going along with the push.  That’s exactly how the episode ends - with Dean feeling a little more hopeful, a little more at peace; a little more Considering he is capable of not only loving Cas but also not hating himself for it.
[until the knowledge that Mary is still alive and the guilt of allowing himself ANY happy thoughts instead of looking for her miserably rears its ugly head in 13x09 and round and round we go but for NOW at least -> ]
DEAN
I'll drink to that.
Tumblr media
(oh look Dean is just wearing his henley.  It’s almost as if a layer has been peeled back).
tagging @im-shaking-like-milk and @deanwasalwaysbi for letting me ramble on to them while writing this; and @lilac-void because you are always so kind about my stuff :)
