hmmm...in s14-15 a god tries to get Dean to embrace his anger and be a killing machine, and in The Winchesters a god tries to get John to embrace his anger and be a killing machine...and in the end that's not who either of them is

so ep2 is about child abuse, ep3 is about child abandonment, ep4 is about PTSD...is each episode just gonna be another one of Dean's many issues he's working through via stories about his parents? because that's interesting

Carlos: "Am I interrupting whatever hetero mating ritual this is?"
actually you're interrupting two heteros doing a homoerotic mating ritual, I can see why you'd be confused

Mary: "I'm not like you, John, I never dreamed I could do anything else. I was raised to hunt. And if I give up hunting, I don't know who I am."
I mean Dean's always been Mary-coded but this is a whole new level, he left Heaven for yet another hunt because he doesn't know how to not hunt, he and Mary are so consumed by the only life they've ever known that the prospect of retiring is unbearable

Carlos: "You can put a demon in a plant?"

Millie: "But your dad and I had this rule: whenever we fought, no matter how bad it got, we had to find a way to tell each other after, 'I love you'. [...] The last fight we had, the day he walked out the door, you know what neither of us stopped to tell each other?"
here for John learning healthy relationship skills

Mary: "They're only vulnerable to weapons made out of copper."
Carlos: "You mean literally the only metal I don't have in my van?"
Mary: "You're kidding right? Why not?"
Carlos: "Because I pride myself on carrying quality weaponry, not cheap garbage made out of...pennies."
someone's been burned by Ea-Nasir one too many times

okay the pre/sequel has its problems but one of the things I love about it is we finally get femme hunters, like the tomboys and butches are fantastic don't get me wrong but in SPN hunting is painfully masculine and the only high femme we get is usually an antagonist (and also not a hunter), whereas in The Winchesters we have Lata, Ada, and Carlos showing that hunting doesn't have to be a macho repression contest the whole time: there's room for softness and non-violence, there's room for joy and frivolity, there's room to be aesthetique, there's room for emotional intelligence, there's room for people who aren't straight cis white dudes saving the day

Dean: "And until then, I'll keep picking the music."
literally the next episode: *Carlos lip syncing for his life to Age of Aquarius*
I always forget how well-versed in musicals Dean is, also love that his first order of business is giving Carlos an impromptu drag number
