It's Gonna Be May!

Saying that SiIvaGunner has in-jokes is perhaps the most obvious statement of all time - it is an in-joke upon which the entire channel is built upon. Yet there's obviously always different LAYERS to each joke, how obvious each of them are - and even today, there are many running gags on the channel that fly over people's heads despite having followed along for so long. Indeed, such is the case today with guess what​?​?​?​?​?​?​?​?, as requestee eg_9371 made me aware of a channel in-joke that's been running quietly in the background for the better part of seven years as of today. All of it built on one simple truth - tomorrow, it's gonna be may.

To reiterate - beyond the funny ha-ha memes we all know like Mr. Grand Dad and more, the SiIvaGunner channel is filled with little nods and gags that oft go overlooked. I of course covered 5 Nights of Snop Dog recently which is a great example of one, there's how rips like Kill & Learn (Recut Ver​.​) reference a running joke by long-time mashup artist Triple-Q about how Sonic Adventure 2 and Kill la Kill have an immeasurable amount of similarities, rips like Kermit in the Ocean being spiritual successors to very specific years-old rips on the channel - you get the jist. Some of these gags eventually get special attention on the channel through specific channel events, but such has not yet been the case with guess what​?​?​?​?​?​?​?​?'s joke - it's a gag that's stayed in the background since its very beginnings, and is only being kept running by a select few rippers. If you're listening to the rip now and it still hasn't landed yet, you may need to be enlightened to the ways of hit boy band *NSYNC. Or, well, really the band itself matters very little compared to the song of choice - It's Gonna Be Me.

Boy band music has a pretty interesting track record on SiIva in general, honestly. One Direction, Backstreet Boys, Boyzone, *NSYNC - to me the typical audience that obsesses over these kinds of bands feels at odds with my image of the average SiIvaGunner fan, and yet whenever they're prominently pushed I get reminded of just how good their music can be when wielded by good rippers. We've had two explosively quality events focusing on two bands in particular, the Big Time Rush takeover of Season 5 with Famous Surprise and the One Direction day of Season 7 with Beautiful Dreamer. *NSYNC hasn't had the same explosion of notoriety, but It's Gonna Be Me in particular has stealthily appeared on the channel every year since 2017 on April 30th. The joke is originally an ancient Tumblr meme from 2012, based on the way singer Justin Timberlake (yes!) pronounces the titular line in the song as "It's gonna be May" - the joke writes itself, and so Tumblr users have annually celebrated the day-before-May in Timberlake's honor.

eg_9371 writes in his request for this post that he's actually one of the most active rippers in keeping this joke going on SiIva for all these years, which I find extremely commendable, and it all started in Season 2, with guess what​?​?​?​?​?​?​?​?. It's a rearrangement of the song in the style of Donkey Kong Country 2's Mining Melancholy, a track most notable for its rhythmic percussion of steel drums sounding like steadily-working pickaxes deep in the mines. Its a fantastic track on its own, yet that percussion especially is a shockingly natural fit for the harpsichord(?) backing prominent throughout It's Gonna Be Me. Mining Melancholy's usual percussion and other parts of its melody stick around for large parts of the rip, making it more of a melody swap/mashup of the two than a full rearrangement a la Sog-Gee Ambiance - but it only serves to enhance the two tracks used, giving It's Gonna Be Me a more melancholic sound and Mining Melancholy a more self-assured feel in return, a super interesting blend of moods. I don't think the It's gonna be May bit would have worked nearly as well if the rip it was paired with wasn't of high quality, and guess what​?​?​?​?​?​?​?​? clears that threshold effortlessly - its a great rip that's made me appreciate the quality in both songs used.

*NSYNC rips have, again, continued to show up in all the years since, always on the dot, often even deliberately placed as the LAST rip of April 30th to drive the joke home. I think it's really sweet that the joke has stuck with eg_9371 in particular, likely in part due to alden wolf's initial contribution to the bit - he's even made It's Gonna Be Me rips on dates completely unrelated to the beginning of May, just because its a genuinely fun song to listen to. There's tons of these "secret" gags left to find on the channel, reoccurring dates or rips that reference jokes from other rips that are years-old by now - and really, a huge part of the fun in running this blog is getting to discover so many turning gears of the channel that I'd never been made aware of. Keep an eye out for these gags yourself - and keep an eye out on SiIvaGunner channel itself later today, to see if It's Gonna Be May for yet one more year.

The art looks really good both in terms of panel composition, light/dark contrast, and creating a convincing sense of space with relatively few elements. Schulz really nailed it with this one.

The structure of this one is really different. It feels more like a part of a longer comic than a traditional Sunday strip. It makes me wonder if Schulz was experimenting with longer form stories.

This is actually a pretty good little scene. I could easily see this being expanded on into a full comic book. It's kind of sad that Schulz didn't really try to do longer-form stories very often because I think he'd have been pretty good at them with some practice.

mario movie predictions

(for context I’m writing this before the trailer has been released)

this will not be a “good movie”

unfortunately, it also won’t be bad in interesting ways

you’ll definitely be able to tell that many people who worked on this care about the source material. background details will be filled with deep-cut references to things from across the whole franchise, including things nintendo hasn’t acknowledged in decades

those will be completely overshadowed by the lore references in the script, which are the most Dorkly-ass nostalgia bait “hey remember Mario?” type gags a committee of soulless writers could come up with

it’s (at least partially!) an origin story, obviously, but they’re not allowed to deviate from established “canon” enough to come up with anything interesting. the best they can do is reference relatively lesser-known games like Wrecking Crew. they won’t reference Mario Bros. (Game & Watch) because they’re cowards.

it’s a comedy, but they only have like five good jokes. all five of those jokes will be featured in the trailer, so a bunch of people who don’t know how trailers work will think it looks good

Who/What are your greatest inspirations/influences, art-wise?

oh gosh, that's difficult to answer! I'll try to limit myself to games. Goichi Suda is definently one, his earnest love of games shines through and his knack for always presenting things in a very unexpected way challenges me to not be too predictable and his passion for his special interests has encouraged me to embrace my own and even incorporate them as heavy inspirations. Killer 7 and the first NMH really never left my heart Of course I also have to hand it to Kojima for his sense of spectacle and framing, the guy isn't perfect but I love how he plays with narrative and gaming conventions in a way that still immerses a player inspite of the frequent 4th wall breaks/gags. I adore the metal Gears but Snatcher is a great time too. Another inspiration has been Akira Ueda and his ds game Contact which I beat last year and fell in love with. His work can be seen as far back as Super Mario RPG (he did the backgrounds!) and he has ties in his career to luv-de-lic which also really inspires me as do their most modern incarnation onion games. So I guess games like Moon and Chulip interest me a lot. There really is too many, I could also nerd out about my love of the silent hill series, or gush about the soft relaxation of a good animal crossing game, dungeon crawling in ye olde SMT, but really what inspires me the most is that I play a lot of games so I try to recapture the things I love about those in my own works Lastly if we are talking non-games Things like anime, tokusatsu, horror films , Mr Art-Cinema David Lynch himself, cartoons & animation are huge for me too and I try to keep up with atleast a few cartoons that are current at any given time ^^;

Week 9 of missing Cipher Academy

Monday

It’s a Manga Monday sort of week (instead of the usual Manga Sunday).

Woah, new character in Girl Meets Rock…I do like that the social web continues to expand, it feels true to life of the band and choir circles I used to run in in high school.

FENG!!!!!!!!!! YEAHHHHHHHHH (Undead Unluck) I’ve really grown to like this tsundere single father – the way Fuuko has filed down his fangs is so funny and endearing (as opposed to the horrible monster he was last loop when he killed my other favourite character, Shen). Plopping a guy literally all about physical combat into this intellectual word game is just the sort of unexpected twist that keeps things interesting, and I’m really excited to see how he fares (despite martial arts being his main focus in life, I do think he’s intelligent and crafty enough to maybe make some clever moves).

Oshi no Ko was fine. Didn’t really need a sympathetic backstory for the mysterious child god but okay.

Dandadan was fine. I liked the one honor student looking guy leading the charge of the delinquents, but Otarun entering the scene was definitely the highlight. This stretch of the manga just feels a little like meaningless spectacle (which, now that I think about it, worries me a little with regards to the anime. Dandadan’s fights are always high octane city destroying spectacles, so I hope Science Saru will be able to keep up…).

Magilumiere fine.

Chainsaw Man fun, mostly because people made funny Quanxi and Asa memes.

Finally got around to watching the new Game Changer episode, and it was a definite improvement on the last one. Watching the layers of fuckery unfold was great, though I feel like the PA prompts were a little unbalanced in terms of the “gameplay” since they’re all nice people who would probably never say no to a PA outright.

Thursday

Today’s menu is chicken and mushroom broth with a side of mini pizza pockets (don’t judge me) for the DunMesh episode, which paired nicely once they got past the snot stuff and went to the potage stuff. After a few heavier episodes, I appreciate Kui balancing the tone out with some more slapstick comedy chapters, and Trigger has done a great job adapting the comedic beats (as they always do). We got the infamous Chilchuck birds and the bees scene, as well as the human face gourd sight gag and stone tsukkomi Marcille, and it was just a fun time overall.

Friday

The Drag Race lip sync tournament was alright. (I refuse to type out “lalaparuza” in earnest) I’m glad to see Mirage get some redemption, though I would’ve liked to see her go all the way, but Megami’s redemption was an even greater sight to behold. She just imbues her lip syncs with so much character and personality, and seeing that win over Mhi’ya was honestly pretty cathartic. (Lowkey I think Plasma should’ve won against Mhi’ya too, but whatever…) But in general, I wasn’t particularly wow’d by any of the lip syncs. I don’t know, last season just had so many heavy hitters (Sasha, Anetra, Jaxx, Marcia Marcia Marcia) that made the tournament genuinely exciting, but of this season’s batch I think only Mirage is on that same level to me (sorry Mhi’ya and Morphine…you can definitely dance but I wanted something more…). I’m cautiously excited for the finale next week – it’s looking like it’s Sapphira’s to lose, but I really hope Nymphia can pull through…

Saturday

Wanted something easy to watch in the background while I did other stuff so I booted up season 5 of Glow Up, which I hadn’t watched yet. Glow Up is one of those reality competition shows that I casually keep up with because I like seeing people be creative, but after Ophelia’s amazing run in season 2 I haven’t cared much about the other contestants/winners so far. Also I know next to nothing about make-up, so it’s kind of funny when I see something and I’m like oh that’s nice and then the judges are like that’s horrible and disgusting I can’t believe they’ve done this lol. I only managed to watch one episode today, but I do like how much Glow Up emphasizes the industry/working side of things and how almost all of their main challenges let us see the contestants not just utilize their make-up skills but also their ability to communicate with clients and supervisors. The classic first episode “do a look that tells me about yourself” challenge is always fun too, because you get to see which MUAs actually have a unique perspective and which just draw some hearts and call it a day. I think the person who did the bald cap anxiety look was my favourite – I appreciated how they didn’t go super literal with it, instead evoking the raw feeling of anxiety itself. Good stuff.

[Review] Wario Land: The Shake Dimension (Wii)

Wario Land 4 2, for better and worse.

Wario's wilderness years continue with this, released the year after Master of Disguise. Many Wario Land games come in pairs it seems, where a second entry refines the concept of a previous change-up. Wario Land 1 had its VBWL, WL2 had its 3, and now Wario Land 4 has Shake It, the first non-shovelware title released by Good-Feel. They went on to make the decent Kirby's Epic Yarn and Yoshi's Woolly World.

I wasn't really a fan of Wario Land 4, so was iffy on the prospect of following it up. The levels here are usually a more linear series of rooms which works better in the format (a bit puzzley followed by a frantic timed run back to the level entrance), but they have more of a problem with missable pickups. TSD does bring back unique treasures, and even has funny descriptions for them like MoD, but there are too many times when you have one chance to get something, and if you fail you have to replay the whole level again (or as I call it, Kirby level design).

Forced repetition is a big factor here. Each level has optional challenges just for bragging rights, as well as secret maps to new levels which are only hinted at after you've beaten the game. Also, the role of money in this game is mainly to pay for maps to new worlds, which in the latter half of the game pretty much require grinding for cash unless you're playing flawlessly and finding all the extra dosh.

Let me take a step back though. This is a stereotypical early-mid Wii game and the central gimmick is in the title. Played with a Wiimote on its side (one of the least comfortable control methods ever devised), Wario and the player alike do a lot of shaking. Shake to ground pound, shake to escape some traps, shake to... shake. Coins will fly out of money bags, and enemies can be shaken for health or to remove their armour, for example. As a conceit this is... fine, but other uses of motion control such as tilting to aim your throws, or the obligatory vehicle sections (also seen in the Kirby and Yoshi games) are more egregious. Apart from this, the controls feel pretty good (this is the developer's mission statement, after all). Butt-stomps do require a finicky downwards input in the air on the lacklustre Wiimote D-pad, but the limitations of the chosen controller mean there's no unnecessary dash button.

Let's take another step back, because anyone's first impression of the game should be to be wowed by the graphics. Lovingly hand-drawn sprites cavort over painted backgrounds to give the impression of a playable cartoon, like WayForward's latter Shantae games or A Boy and His Blob. The 480p resolution blown up on a modern TV doesn't do it any favours but this is still a gorgeous game, and I wish we had more like this. Which makes the baffling choice to lock gameplay into a 4:3 resolution all the more galling. By mid-2008 not supporting widescreen seems anachronistic and it would especially help on a platformer where you routinely get shot into high-speed running sequences. Instead there's huge borders on the sides showing how many missions you're failing. Yuck!

One more step back now to examine the game's story, such as it is, because it opens with a fully-animated cutscene (with subtitled dialogue and no voices whatsoever). The setting is once again a pocket dimension for no reason, with a whole new cast of baddies, a charisma-free antagonist, and a damsel in distress who exists only for one gag in the ending. It's everything I dislike about Wario Land plots. Bringing back Captain Syrup, Wario's rakish two-time pirate nemesis, is a great idea, only she's relegated to shopkeeper with two lines of dialogue outside of the intro and ending. What a waste! And coming off the banter-filled Master of Disguise, saddling Wario with a silent protagonist role was immensely disappointing when the first-time prospect of verbal sparring with Syrup was right there on the table. Charles Martinet has his vocal quips but even the manual is all but stripped of Wario-style snide asides.

A final step back for the big picture (although may I quickly mention the slow, frustrating boss fights and the further reduced role of status conditions like "on fire" or "frozen" to the point that they're barely there?). I did wonder if the Wario Land series was losing its way with WL4, and sadly it seems so. For me the series peaked with 3, but there's more to the character and his series. Each game has its shining lights and its dull spots, but the identity of the series has morphed over time. It's taken ideas from Mario, Metroid, Kirby, and made them its own. But playing this I felt how Good-Feel had segued from this to Epic Yarn and Woolly World, and in doing so perhaps demonstrated the irrelevance of Wario platformers under Nintendo's overcrowded umbrella. Without a dedicated development team (RIP R&D1), with other puzzle-platformers heavy on environmental interaction jostling for position, and with a successful minigame-based subseries to fall back on, Wario Land just doesn't seem to have a place anymore. The Shake Dimension is now 15 years old and there hasn't been another non-Ware game since. Well, it had a good run. Cheers, big guy.

“Gun rights are for everyone.” So says Fin Smith, a trans gun rights advocate and gun enthusiast who sees the right to bear arms as a last defense against authoritarianism aimed at the queer community. In 2022 alone, these groups targeted at least 124 drag shows for protests and harassment, many times appearing with weapons. For Smith and members of other LGBTQ+ gun clubs like the Pink Pistols — which has 45 chapters across the U.S. — guns are not a partisan issue. “I mean, if you go far enough left, you get your guns back,” said Guardian, a Rainbow Reload member whose own slogan is “Make Racists Afraid Again.” “I want people to feel safe, to be safe, to be who they are,” he said on the makeshift gun range in the snow that Smith had set up. “It’s not a matter of politics. It’s a matter of whether or not you think certain people should get to live, and be their genuine selves.” A UCLA study from 2020 indicated 21.5 percent of LGBTQ+ households maintained a firearm, compared to 36 percent of their straight counterparts. About the same number of Democrats as LGBTQ+ people own a gun — 20 percent — while almost half of Republicans do, according to the Rand Corporation. “I went from concealed carry every once in a while when I was feeling it to every single day,” said Navy vet Sharon, who transitioned last year. “There are people that just looking at me will want to hurt me.” “There’s been an uptick in hate crimes, there’s been an uptick in groups that have been protesting drag story times and drag shows, and it felt like I needed to learn how to protect myself,” said Jamie, a self-described left-leaning trans woman who chose Rainbow Reload over other local rod and gun clubs for the like-minded company. “Having to hide your identity when you are shooting with a group of people isn’t really a great time,” she says. Okay, but (sorry for my english) I just really love modern hc where they perform as the band No Name during their school festival (their identities are already known and that people know they belong to one of the most famous group in the school /with nanaba and erwin/).

Levi’s the face of the group and almost half of the fans have him as their bias but they really thinks he’s asexual or bi or even gay since they never knew anyone who had been his girlfriend and he doesn’t seem to be that person to be involved in any romance.

Then the crowd went wilder and even Levi’s fans just gasped with excitement because—damn that’s hot!

Even Hange herself were surprised but she couldn’t do anything since levi’s grip was too strong, lost in his own world as he ravishes her with kisses as if he doesn’t give a shit about everyone watching them

she doesn’t even know how long it lasted.

Then there’s Erwin in the crowd, capturing every moment with a camera because he’s the only one who wasn’t surprised about this

“Breaking news! Levi Ackerman frontman of No Name is having an illicit love affair!”

“It’s not breaking news if everyone already knows...” Porco rolls his eyes. Connie groans. Great. Now Porco is in his shot. The school’s journalism club is essentially him and Sasha with her phone’s camera. They do not have the skill nor the budget to edit him out.

“Who’s he dating then?” Sasha shoots back.

“Heard it’s a girl from another school.” Porco shrugs.

“Heard he’s gay...” Reiner offers.

“You just want him to be gay...” There’s sniggering and Reiner wants to punch Porco, but he’s a man of discipline, so no violence before breakfast.

“It’s just a rumour! He isn’t dating anyone! Levi’s too cool to date.” Eren says, gagging at the mention of the word. A literal child.

“Who would wanna date him?” Mikasa scoffs.

“Everyone in the school apart from you, Mikasa...” Petra says, “he’s dreamy...”

Connie urges the discussion on, Sasha capturing all of this. This is the best content they’ve gotten all week. “Come on! There are no bad answers!”

“Maybe he’s dating a fan?” Bertholdt says.

“Maybe he’s dating Hanji... They do seem rather close?” Pieck says, and the silence and scowls are intended to shame her. Connie looks at the aluminium foil on Pieck’s head. Right. The Signs movie screening organised by the conspiracy society is today.

“No bad answers except that one...” Connie says.

“You’re the talk of the town again...” Mike says, “they were discussing you on the school’s YouTube channel.”

Levi tsks. He doesn’t know why Mike bothers with that crap. It’s a pretty high quality production... he had justified, but there’s nothing high quality about Sasha’s shaky hands and Connie’s head covering half the frame. Everyone knows Mike enjoys the gossip, and there’s no one that enjoys it more. Except maybe Erwin.

“Do tell! Who is the enigmatic Levi Ackerman dating?” Erwin teases. He knows he’s not getting anything out of tight-lipped Levi. But it’s still worth a shot. Also worth seeing how annoyed he can get. Plus it’s not like they don’t already know.

If the canteen hadn’t been so goddamn full, Levi would’ve relocated long ago. Then again, his lunch groups hasn’t changed since his first day at school. The routine works.

“I’m sure you boys would be the first to know...” Nanaba chuckles. She had been the first to know and frankly. Levi’s inability to confess has been getting stifling. The only thing that really breaks the conversation though? Hanji tripping and landing face first on the table, lucky for her Levi moves her tray out of the way, saving her lunch, “watch it four eyes!”

“What did I miss?” Hanji asks, eyes already gleaming at the possibility of new knowledge.

“We were just talking about Levi’s illicit love affair.” Mike says. This is getting interesting.

“Awww Levi! You didn’t tell your ol’ pal Hanji that you were seeing someone?”

The rest of them exchange looks. God she’s so goddamn oblivious.

“Eat. We’ve got band practice before class.” Levi says, fingers already working to peel Hanji’s orange for her.

Nanaba winces. So goddamn oblivious.

“So we enter school today and Sasha what do we see?”

“Merch!” Sasha pops in front of the screen and does jazz hands with Connie.

“In the lead up to the big No Name concert, everyone’s donning their best No Name merch! First, let’s speak to the best in the game, Armin Arlert.”

Armin fidgets awkwardly, “ahaha I’m just a fan who just happens to make high quality merch.” Modest for someone earning big bucks from his enterprise.

“Ah... And you have competition this year!” Connie says into the microphone, which is really just rolled up newspaper.

“Well... The quality of my work speaks for itself...” Armin smiles sheepishly at the camera, but there’s something insidious in his eyes. Armin has to admit having sole monopoly over No Name merchandising in school has gone a little stale. Surely a little competition will spice things up.

“So Zeke, care to tell us more about your entry into the merchandise game?” Connie asks the bearded boy. Who has a full grown beard at their age? Connie makes a mental note to insert “sells bootleg merch” in the little panel that runs below Zeke’s interview. The whole school is also pretty sure Zeke had been behind the whole oregano debacle last year- someone had been passing oregano off as weed and selling it to the younglings.

“What’s there to say? Mine’s cheaper.” Zeke winks.

“So, satisfied customer. Why did you choose to buy Armin’s merch over Zeke’s?” Connie asks.

Pieck glances down at her Hanji shirt, “Armin got Hanji’s nose right.” She smiles.

In the background Armin and Eren are yelling at one another.

“How could you Eren! I thought we were best friends!” Armin says. Maybe the competition spiced things up a little too much.

“It was cheaper Armin! So much cheaper!”

Eren is wearing the ugliest shirt in school so, is it really worth it though?

“We are absolutely not blowing our budget on a confetti canon!”

“But Levi!” Hanji whines, “you already rejected so many of my ideas...”

“May I remind you that your previous ideas include a guillotine on stage, you repelling from the ceiling-“

“A tiger...” Mike adds and Hanji shoots him a look, traitor...

“It was two tigers...” she mutters under her breath. “Aww Levi you never let me do anything fun!” She pouts and Mike watches as Levi’s resolve slips an inch. There’s nothing more disgusting than the weakness of a man in love. Mike rolls his eyes. He had told Erwin if he wanted in on the action, he should join their band. There’s just so much to see that Mike has honestly had his fill. Or maybe he’s just saying it. Damn Nanaba was right, he enjoys this more than he’d care to admit.

“If you shut up through the next five songs, I’ll buy you dinner.”

“What about me?” Mike huffs.

“Deal!” Hanji shouts triumphantly, “and if you let me sing the chorus with you on this next song at the concert I’ll buy you dessert!”

“Almost as if I’m invisible...” Mike mutters.

“Fine... Deal... If you can hit the notes that is...”

“Ohhhh snap!” Mike says, and Levi turns to him for a high five. Mike smashes a beat on his drums. Hanji deadpans.

Ba dum fuckin tiss indeed.

“So it’s two days before the festival and the big No Name concert. Today, we’ve got a special treat for you. Roving reporter Jean Kirschtein will find out more about Levi’s love affair, straight from the horse’s mouth!”

Jean shoots Connie a dirty look. But the pun had not been intended. Connie mouths a quick apology before continuing, “but first, a word with the people closest to him-“ Connie nudges Jean towards the general direction of Erwin, Nanaba and Mike. Remember you owe me Jean! Connie whispers harshly when he senses his friend’s hesitation, now go!

Jean groans once more. God his reputation was going to take a hit. He’s vice captain of the soccer team for God’s sake. He doesn’t need this.

“Erwin Smith! A word? Uh... Thoughts on the rumours surrounding Levi Ackerman’s love life?” Jean asks. “Erwin Smith, football captain, history club president, student council treasurer, overall overachiever, and Levi Ackerman’s friend” appears on the screen. They all know if anyone’s likely to spill, it’s going to be Erwin.

Erwin’s eyes light up, he’s finally going on the channel he watches religiously with Mike. There’s so much he can contribute, so much gossip to share, so much insight. Maybe they would even invite him as a panelist on their show. The sheer power! He looks at Nanaba and she frowns at him and shakes her head. Ah damn it! He knows she’ll tear into him if he divulges too much.

“That’s strictly on a need to know basis.” Erwin grins.

“Well... Can you give us anything at all?” Jean asks. Please for the love of god he needs to pay Connie back somehow for setting him up on that date with Mikasa. God is generous but he can easily take it all away.

“We have good, solid guesses, but other than that... No... We can’t confirm anything...” Erwin answers, but not before glancing at Nanaba. She’s nodding. Good, that’s a good answer. Ambiguous enough to keep people wanting. Erwin is relieved. Jean isn’t however, he’s now certain that his debt is going to be rolled along a tab he will soon never be able to pay.

“Oh and the history society’s having quiz night next week, be there or be square!” Erwin plugs.

“Nerd!” Nile yells from across the hallway and Mike chortles.

It doesn’t take Jean long to find Hanji, after all she’s president of the biology club, so why wouldn’t she be in a lab elbow deep in a vat of something Jean doesn’t want to know the name of. It’s her kingdom with a whopping total of four subjects.

“Hanji Zoë, I’m here to ask for the latest on Levi Ackerman’s love life-“

Hanji Zoë- the school’s resident oddball, the genius herself, in the flesh, eating a checkerboard cookie. She looks up at him and there are crumbs on her face.

“Oh! Hi Jean!” Hanji looks up momentarily, “that’s easy, Levi’s in love with me.” She winks at Jean and chuckles. Jean’s jaw drops, surely she’s kidding. Hanji’s known for that after all- her quick wit and dismal personal hygiene. He chuckles awkwardly. “Yeah... Okay...”

“See you at the concert?” She beams at him and he replies enthusiastically. Is she kidding? Everyone’s gonna be there. But Jean remains strategic, he leaves right before she gets the chance to talk his ear off about joining her club again. “Shoot... There goes another one...” she says under her breath as he exits the lab.

Jean bumps into Levi when he’s leaving the lab, odd, what’s Levi doing here, no matter, Jean has a job to do.

“Levi Ackerman! Care to comment on the recent rumours surrounding your-“

“No.” Levi interjects and heads off.

Jean flips the camera so he’s in it, “well, that’s the scoop. Back to you Connie and Sasha.”

“It’s the day of the festival! But really the whole school is buzzing with anticipation for the No Name concert!” Connie announces into his makeshift mic.

“Will there be another accident on-stage this time? Will Levi Ackerman reveal more on his secret romance? Is there even a secret romance to begin with? More importantly, will Porco Galliard finally pay for his own food at the festival?”

“Hey!” Porco whips his head around to glare at Connie, “did Reiner get you to say that?”

Connie shrugs, “we’ll find out after these messages...”

The concert is a blast, from a spectacular entrance (choreographed, no doubt, by one Hanji Zoë), to Mike’s drum solo, to Levi’s vocal riffs. But there’s an anticipation of another sort- will Levi Ackerman finally address the rumours of his love affair?

“My Levi-Hanji senses are tingling Nanaba...” Erwin says mid-concert. As the self-proclaimed expert on school gossip, there’s no gossip sweeter than that which surrounds his two best friends. Nanaba thinks it’s an overstatement of his abilities.

But Nanaba feels it too- the electricity in the air, “i think it’s finally happening!” She says, nothing short of a vision.

Levi announces the last song for the night, and he makes his way over to Hanji during the last chorus.

HUH?

Sasha’s cameras are rolling. She holds her breath, for what she doesn’t know, but she feels it coming, call it director’s intuition if you will.

Hanji looks at Levi and beams past the bandages over their eyes, now upgraded to a material they can actually see through, ever since that one accident with Hanji trying to execute a stage dive completely blind. It’s not fun explaining to the ER nurse how you managed to fracture your arm in so many locations.

Hanji’s expression changes to one of confusion when Levi closes the distance between them. This isn’t part of any plan. Her lips part in a gasp. The crowd falls silence, breath collectively held in anticipation. It’s happening. The most significant and exciting moment of their young lives.

What in the name of Maria, Rose, and Sheena!

Levi grabs Hanji by her ponytail and crashes his lips into hers. She forgets how to function, her guitar now hanging limp and forgotten. But her arms find their way around Levi’s neck. It’s just Mike on the drums now, roaring with laughter.

“Hell yes!” Mike exclaims and it’s captured by one of the mics, joined by Nanaba and Erwin at exactly the same time. There’s a flash from Erwin’s phone, there, immortalised in a photo forever. He knows it’ll come in handy one day. For blackmail or for a future wedding montage. Either is fine.

What just happened?

Connie’s jaw is hanging.

“Levi Ackerman and... and... Hanji Zoë?” Connie says, more for his own benefit than for his audience. Because this is Hanji they’re talking about? The Hanji Zoë? Resident evil genius, overall weirdo, oddly magnetic and popular amongst both the boys and the girls, Levi’s childhood friend Hanji Zoë? The answer had been staring them right in the face! Levi at the biology labs, Levi glowering at her, the bickering, the chemistry on and off stage.

Connie whips his head over to Pieck, and she winks at him, told you so!

“I don’t believe it! Stop the presses! Levi Ackerman, frontman of No Name, in love with the brilliant, the magnetic, the one and only... Hanji Zoë!”

Hanji is kissing Levi back with fervour, until they’re both blushing and giddy, the music long forgotten, and when everyone is done gawking, the crowd erupts in violent cheering. Who would’ve thought emotionally constipated Levi, Levi whose private life has been kept a secret for so long, safe from the prying hands of the school press and his loyal fans, would choose to make an announcement like this. What a night! What a spectacle!

“I guess that’s all for tonight folks, and what a fantastic and surprising evening it has been!” Connie laughs, “I’m Connie Springer, and you heard it here first!”

The confetti canon goes off. And Hanji watches with uninhibited joy as confetti rains down on the stage.

“So... Tigers next time?” Hanji says, unwrapping the bandages from her face, her eyes glazed over and more beautiful than anything Levi has ever seen. He scoffs, pressing another kiss to her lips for posterity.

“Don’t push it...”

And thoughts on the whole catching skill thing? Yay or nay?

Oof that’s a bit of a tricky question actually because I’ve made barely any progress in the grand scheme of Rune Factory 5 😅 It’s only been like two in-game months, I’m still in the main storyline and I’ve paid hardly any attention to romance and bonus features so I don’t think I can really judge it yet lol

That being said... right now I think 4 is better, particularly the Special. It’s just that bit more polished. I’m not usually someone to judge a game based on performance and graphics, but the fact is that 4 (and all the other previous games) have a distinct “Rune Factory” style that is largely missing from 5, and part of that style (i.e. the 2D backgrounds) allows for zero lag and no loading screens. I love the models in 5, and the lag isn’t that bad, but I do get frustrated when 4 was so snappy in comparison. Frontier and Oceans did it first, but I feel like Rune Factory was doing great with the top-down-on-2D gameplay and didn’t need to change it. And the jankiness gives me a headache sometimes :/

4 also has some of my favourite characters, dialog, events and gags. The story was pretty simple but i found it very moving. The dungeons are huge and full of secrets. And while I don’t think I’ve seen enough of 5 to make a fair comparison, no characters have really jumped out at me like characters in 4 did.

I don't know if this is true but I theorize 4 may have been intended to be the last game in the series. Or at least, the devs thought it might be - and heck it nearly was! I say this because it feels like a celebratory send off - finishing the story from 1 with a bang, putting in a ton of references and callbacks including multiple bonus monsters, having so many dungeons and so much dialog. I felt this even before I'd played any of the other games. There’s something really special about 4. I think the devs put their hearts and souls into it and it shows.

Not that they didn’t with 5! but maybe not as much haha

Of course, however, I am clearly biased towards the first Rune Factory game I played 😅 and who knows, maybe I’ll change my mind once I’ve spent more time with 5! I honestly hope I come to love it as much as 4, because it is a really good game!

As for the catching skill... well I haven't really used it much yet 😅 but I do like it. For one thing it lets you 'try out' a new monster before committing to taming it. For another it helps stop your existing party from killing monsters before you can tame them 😂 Plus being able to freeze tricky enemies while robbing them blind is very useful! Also the ability to lasso object from far away is handy. I wouldn’t call it vital or necessary but like, neither are sword flowers, monsters seeds or field dungeons. They add spice instead.

Here we are! What a journey, and while perhaps this season wasn't at MoM level it was REALLY good, with great new villains/allies, great little throwbacks and an awesome story! 🤩

This type of plot twist reminds me of our early seasons. Zane sacrificing himself, Garmadon giving up his life, those moments that made me so curious and excited about the following. I have no idea what will be the outcome for this, but I can't wait to find out

With that out of the way, AMAZING SEASON 😍😍😍 I think this finale beats MoM's, just because it was really unexpected and opens up a SEA of possibilities... yeah too soon 😭

I'm still shaken, my world, they did something HUGE and I do hope it will be a good shake to the entire Ninjago plotline. Nya is "gone", we still don't know about the person behind all that vengestone, we haven't heard from Garmy in forever, there are so many good ideas out there now that they've set the ground for more 🤩🤩

Voice acting was *chef's kiss*, not only for the villain which I already stressed enough about, I think Kelly reached a new level of emotional intimacy with Nya and I'm so happy she showed her skills 💜💜

Animation is TOP, there's little to no point into saying anything else since they showed it very clearly in the latest season ☺

This was the emotional, witty and engaging writing I was looking for! Good jokes, meaningful dialogues, emotional scenes, everything was really good and I'm gonna rewatch some scenes especially for that 😍

It turned out having Maya and Ray back was kind of a distraction to fool us all 😅😅 Well played actually, and it was very cool seeing them again in any case 🙋‍���️

And now? Jay lost his love, I have no idea if the show will work on him getting over her or hold onto her memory (thinking of Jay probably the latter, although I do think that handling the first would be an interesting idea). KAI LOST HIS SISTER 😢😢😢 I have no doubt he's gonna beat himself up for it, like he did when Zane was gone too. Everyone lost their friend, she had become such a vital part of the team and now she is not here anymore it will be hard...

They are back with the four plus one green savior formation, I sincerely don't know how I feel about that 😅 I'm always happy when we get the OGs, but this is about going on without Nya... maybe Skylor will be called? Or Pixal will be more active? That could be interesting to see, who knows 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Gosh, how are they going to handle the next season? It will have to give A LOT of answers to the millions questions we all have right now. Man I can't wait, it could be anything!!! This is a Ninjago revolution!

But if I have to mention a little complain, and I'm a fangirl so I absolutely have to, Kai didn't show much of a reaction to Nya's "departure". Okay, she didn't straight up die like in Skybound (I'm gonna fear all BOUND seasons from now on 😱), but he's her brother and he loves deeply his family. Either we're gonna see him go all out next season, or the writers really did only focus on Jaya. A tiny bit salty... but you got me a fantastic finale so I'll move on 👍

Outstanding, I'm blown away. Whenever I think I'm used to this show they do stuff like this. I'm so glad and sad you guys 😅 But mostly happy that despite everything I still get very strong emotions while I watch this long time favorite show of mine 💜💜💜

blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most):

Zenos - basically Lotor, if the abuse had rendered him completely apathetic to life and incapable of feeling things and the only joy he ever found was in brief moments during combat with equally matched opponents

Emet Selch - grumpy theatrical grandfather (he’s actually a great-grandfather) who is honestly responsible for A Lot Of Things of the imperial, genocidal, etc. variety (actually accurately labeled for once!), but in addition to being a very compelling character, his personality and morality are such that, well, I personally can’t really condemn him for anything; I’d be a hypocrite :P

Aymeric - literal fantasy elf prince, precious, reluctant leader, is trapped in his office running his state most of the time, needs to be let out for walks/adventures; extremely competent fighter but also needs to be bubble-wrapped 

Estinien - initially presents as the typically reserved, efficient, deadly, quiet-type, but is actually an awkward social cryptid who has no clue how the real world works

scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped): 

ZENOS - he’s so earnest and honest and open and his face is So Soft T__T

Vrtra - millennia-old dragon whose baby brother energy hasn’t dissipated at all, to the point that mortals can’t help but adopt him <3

Moogles in general - they’re just so round and soft and aggravating, they drive me to violence

scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave): 

Sidurgu - basically a dark knight/vigilante type lizard boy, Prickly but Soft™, lots of angst, only appears in the questline for one of the classes you can play 

Foulques - dark elf rival type character, also appears only in a class-specific questline, done dirty (primarily by virtue of his race...) both in the story and by the story and therefore adopted by yours truly

glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week): 

Hraesvelgr - reclusive dragon with dog features, tragic past, need I say more? XD 

Magnai & Sadu - loud, combat-happy lizard folks who also happen to be hilariously at each other’s throats all the time to the point that it’s a running gag now <3 Both are precious and fun, and I will happily take any amount of screen time with them, either alone or in conjunction with each other

poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave): 

Zenos - I’m sure you’ve seen me ranting on the bird app, so I won’t go off completely here (just a little, because I can’t help it) but like. UGH. He’s obviously “problematic” with the fandom due to being an antagonist, morally grey, blah blah, the usual, but also his character is so subtly written that -- while I absolutely adore that and eat it up like crazy -- it leads to Disk Horse between people who can actually read his character for what it is and people who just take him at face value as someone who is one dimensional and only “I’m evil, murder good, I like to fight” brainless brawn type of stuff, which is frustrating. Additionally, in terms of context, he doesn’t even really do anything all that bad in comparison to so many other antagonists/villains that get either a free pass or at least some basic understanding/empathy from both characters in-story/the writers and the fandom, but he’s routinely excluded from receiving the same. He’s also a scapegoat a lot of the time, in the sense that things that other characters have done or are responsible for initiating/seeing through, end up getting pinned on him, even though he was either not around at the time they were occurring or he was like... 6 years old lmao. The game mechanics are such that your player character extends a sympathetic ear to literally everyone else, even characters you haven’t known for as long or as well, but the dialogue options presented for Zenos are consistently straight up mean (with two exceptions; one which doesn’t really makes sense to have at that point in the story, given how the story develops? and the other one, comes too late); you don’t even get a chance to treat him neutrally. Your character gets to experience other antagonists’ backstories in-game, but players only know of Zenos’ backstory from extra material outside the game, and he is also routinely excluded from the player character having the chance to actually learn anything about him. There’s such a huge disconnect between what the player character knows vs. what the player knows, and how he is treated by the writing vs. how literally everyone else is treated, and it really tastes like Ye Olde VeeElDee :/ I also see him as the poster kid for abused childhood and ND representation, so on the one hand I guess I should have expected as much, but on the other hand it’s even more like ://////////, especially when the rest of the whole fucking game is written so well. So yeah, lots of controversy here. You’d love it [sarcasm].

horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason):

G’raha (nerdy cat boy), Alphinaud & Alisaie (teenage elf twins), Estinien - torment would be harmless and out of fondness, they’re just all very easy to tease 

Lyse (I just can’t give a non-biased description of her, I tried, so you can wiki her if you want lmao) - torment would be real and violent, I can’t stand her

Fandaniel - torment would also be real but of a less severe nature than for Lyse, and not out of hatred but just because I think his buttons would be fun to press :)

She's super skilled and good at what she does and even though she's more of the Brick Wall character she gets to be emotional and she gets to cry and she gets to be angry and she gets to be regretful and she's never 'weak' for her emotions, she's never portrayed as being unreasonable and that's just so GOOD. her relationship with roy is the fucking best thing ever okay. it's about the mutual respect that's been built over a decade, the deep trust and understanding, their secret codes, their teamwork, the compassion they have for each other, their banter ETC. ROYAI SHIP OF ALL TIME ANYWAYS. Riza is so good i love her so muchhhh!!!! She has so much depth and she constantly works to support roy in their goal to overthrow the government she is SO GOOD IM NOT SAYING ENOUGH HERE JUST KNOW I LOVE RIZA I ALSO LOVE ROY.

everybody knows the major cast (spongebob, patrick, sandy, squidward, mr krabs, plankton, mrs puff, pearl, karen, larry, perch perkins, mermaid man & barnacle boy, bubble bass, ect)

so heres my top 10 “far more minor and obscure than that without being a background incidental” characters that i personally like just cuz i talk about them a lot anyways ♥

10. Squidmund Tentacles (issue #24 of the Spongebob Comics)

Squidward’s happy-go-lucky goofball cousin that gets along better with Spongebob and Patrick than Squidward himself does. I can’t help but love Squidmund, he’s fun, and the way he contrasts with his cousin is great. I like the differences in how he’s initially presented by Squidward - as every bit a snobbish, pretentious artist as he is - to how he actually acts - goofy and fun loving - because the intentional misdirection of a characters behavior is probably one of my favorite recurring themes in Spongebob. And I love the little differences in how he’s designed versus how Squidward is designed, though clearly inspired by the other.

9. Chip Plankton (Karen’s Baby)

A 9-month mail order baby that grows to adulthood within the span of a single episode, Chip does a good job of being both a game changer while also maintaining the status quo. I think Karen deserves to be a MILF, and I like Chip’s design. I firmly believe that Chip should have stayed like a toddler the entire episode, with references to Karen taking care of him here and there in episodes produced afterwards because I think it’d be a fun change to the status quo... and frankly the episode itself was pretty mediocre... But Chip is a fun addition to the Plankton family, and I admit I love the idea of Karen being a mom. 

8. Raisin Plankton (issue #20 of the Spongebob Comics)

LITERALLY HOW COULD YOU GET MORE OBSCURE THAN RAISIN? A four-panel gag comic on the bottom of a larger comic page and an intentional misdirection with almost no dialogue! If you’ve been here a while you already know that I love Raisin for basically the same reason a lot of people love Chip - for a long time this was the closest thing to a child Plankton had. And the entire concept of him is fascinating - a genetically modified raisin that Plankton put part of his brain in, considering him his father, and clearly wanting his attention? Not only is it funny, but it’s an interesting character concept.There’s so much that could be done with Raisin as a character and I’ve got so many ideas.

7. Flibberty Gibbet (A Cabin in the Kelp)

She only makes an extremely short appearance at the end after being talked about for a large portion of the episode - presented as absolutely contradictory to how she was described. But I’m still intrigued by her - she’s cute, and she has a meaningful name that means someone who is whimsical or gossipy, and she used to be friends with three major characters (Sandy, Karen, and Mrs. Puff) - so I can’t help but wonder about how their friendship came to an end and why since they don’t actually remember what they were arguing about. She seems like she’d be a fun character to explore in some way.

6. Gordon Plankton (Hurray for Dads)

Plankton’s goodie-two-shoes dad! How can I not love him? Look at his stupid little shirt and his dumb little mustache. He’s friendly, polite, nice, and excited about gardens. He’s just so conceptually silly and fun and he’s Plankton’s dad, that’s such a fun combination. I love him. He appeared in the storyboard for Plankton Gets the Boot but his scene was cut, so he hasn’t actually appeared in the cartoon but I really want to see him there someday because look at him.

5. Kenny the Cat (episode of the same name)

Mostly I like him cuz I like cats. But as a character that Spongebob admired and idolized, I love the way Kenny genuinely cares about Spongebob’s feelings. A lot of other characters that have been idolized by Spongebob tend to be callous of Spongebob’s feelings or well-being... but Kenny isn’t one of them, and I appreciate that. When he disappoints Spongebob, he is genuinely devastated to have let him down and actively decides to be not just Spongebob’s idol, but Spongebob’s friend and listens to his ideas. I think it’s a fun dynamic, and I’m glad that at least one of Spongebob’s idols doesn’t purely take advantage of or mistreat him.

4. Beatrice (Mall Girl Pearl)

It sucks we don’t get to see Pearl interact with, like, her actual grandma, but Beatrice is an awesome character and she’s voiced by Betty White. Who doesn’t love that??? All the powers of a grandma, the voice of Betty White, and she’s supportive of Pearl - and characters outside of her family being supportive of her and her interests is not an extremely common thing. Which you know? Is kinda so sucks. So anyways, stan Beatrice.

3. Squidabeth the Vampire Squid (The Night Patty)

A rarely seen species, and despite being a woman with a passing similarity to a main character she is still distinct and interesting on her own. I am in love with her. You’d think she’d be a lot like Squidward because of their physical similarities and similar jobs, but she’s a jovial and friendly person, who while clearly goth leaning and occult in nature is not at all a bad person. She’s patient and understanding of Spongebob’s missteps, and she’s just so pleasant to see in action. I cherish her.

2. Tony the Turtle (Shell Games)

Introduced as Patrick’s new roommate, and the true identity of Patrick’s rock - sure, the concept of Patrick’s rock being a sea turtle’s shell isn’t exactly consistent with the rest of the series... but Tony is a fun character, who doesn’t love the idea of an italian sea turtle that listens to metal and rock? And not going to lie, I love his dynamic with Patrick. I’d like to see him referenced again. He’s Patrick’s literal rock, and he could be his metaphorical rock too, they’re a duo with a lot of potential humor.

1. Squidina the Squid (Goons on the Moon, The Goofy Newbie)

Time and time again there’s been episodes where Pearl is mistreated or looked down upon by whatever group of friends she has that episode. Don’t you just want for her to have one (1) friend her age who treats her well? I know I do. Pearl and Squidina don’t like each other that much in the beginning of their only episode together, but once they find mutual ground they strike up a rather supportive friendship and I’d love to see more of it. Amora’s headcanon is a mix of some comic backstory with working the MCU in.

CANON BACKGROUND:

Amora’s origins are a complete mystery and she prefers to keep it that way. Some believe she has always been and simply reincarnated each and every time. The truth is that Amora was born into what was considered poverty by Asgard standards and on the edge of the Nornheim, away from central Asgard. Amora was humble but hated the sense of inferiority that she felt due to her perceived status. When she was still an adolescent by Asgard standards, Amora attended Asgard’s Sorcery School, where she began to become known for her superior beauty and natural allure. After, Amora ran away and traveled to the only person she deemed could give her the power to ascend; Karnilla, Queen of the Norns, whose mystical power was only outmatched by Odin himself. As her disciple, she learned more powerful spells but she was deemed too undisciplined and she eventually expelled Amora from her tutelage.

Amora, furious that she would be turned away, turned to seek other magic users, unafraid to use her womanly wiles to sway them. Amora’s beauty was considered great as she whispered false promises and lies as she learned the secrets of many sorcerers. However, she was beaten at her own game by one magician particular who kept her as some twisted bride and plaything. Tortured and abused, this was enough to push Amora over the edge. Having carefully plotted his demise, she had managed to trick the mage into a paralyzing seal in which she forcefully took his mystical knowledge and reduced him to a husk of nothing. From that point onwards, Amora swore she would never let “old, stupid men” dictate to her any longer.

Amora made her home in Asgard and was the subject of many topics of conversation. However, tales of her beauty had even reached Odin’s ears. She approached the court and took note of those who sought her affections. This was how she met Loki, Thor and Sif. During this time, Amora sought Thor as a romantic interest, believing only someone as pursued and admired as herself deserved him. This led to a bitter long rivalry with Sif that only deepened far past their perceived childish crushes into something more sinister over the eons.

The final straw, however, was when Odin agreed on peace with Jotunheim, and in return, he would offer Amora as a bride. Taken against her will, Amora’s criticism soon turned into scathing hate as she watched Asgard fade into the distance with hatred burning in her emerald eyes. Kept in the dungeons, bound and gagged so she couldn’t cast any spells, a Frost Giant didn’t intend to be ensnared by her gaze alone, which was enough to free her. Finally free, Amora enslaved the guard and showed her true power, causing death and destruction as she returned to Asgard, inciting she would not be sold like cattle, thus the hate between Jotunheim and Asgard was reignited.

With her return, Amora was both worshipped but some also feared the Asgardian goddess. Having become a woman of influence in Asgard, Amora began enlisting people into her cause that the only way to protect herself was not to marry into a family or convince an “old man” to do it but to do what she always did; if she wanted something, she would take it by any means necessary. Amora was worshipped for her beauty and warriors fought each other to simply impress her, some even going as far as killing the other. Those who she ensnared to be her loyal followers, included Skurge the Executioner and Sif’s lover, Haldor. Amora’s first big move made waves as she marched on the land of Norns and proved how much of a powerful mystic she was when she conquered land owned by Karnilla and dueled the Asgardian herself, killing her, absorbing her knowledge, her power, and assuming control of the land for herself.

Amora was worshipped as the Asgardian goddess of love, beauty, and lust. She was known for her beauty and power but also her infamous temper and cruelty to those who disobeyed her. Those who scorned her worship or whose worship she deemed unsatisfactory were treated poorly. She has many myths about her, such as turning a warrior into a tree on her grounds as he wanted to bask in her ever-lasting beauty. She had many estates which were often surrounded by foreboding warnings of her cruelty and monstrous creatures she had transformed from Asgardians who came to her.

When Ragnorak occurred, Amora crafted a portal that she stepped through to survive the destruction of Asgard. However, her spell to bring her to the other Asgardians ended her up in Midgard of all places. Assimilating herself into their way of things, Amora made no secret of her identity and continued to let men fight to the death over her or perform dangerous acts to impress her, and simply having what she wanted, having always enjoyed a hedonistic lifestyle. Sometimes a friend and sometimes a foe, the goddess may rule over the hearts of others but she also knows just how cruel love can be.

SOKOVIA ACCORDS:

Amora is only somewhat familiar with the Accords. She has yet to be approached about it and, as Amora does, she has little respect for the laws and regulations of Midgard.

she is very much described to be “fox-like” in demeanor, slipping in and out of conversations naturally and with ease, being able to show different aspects and sides of her to different types of people

her default persona in encountering new people is a noble, unassuming/demure one in order to gauge how they interact with her before adjusting accordingly // you can see what that looks like here

a very innate actress, but the most cynical description of her would be “two-faced,” though it’s important to note that her personas are not so drastic that they seem like different people (like Akashi’s situation); perhaps if someone was keenly observing her for a while, they would notice

she does subtle shifts in aspects of her personality’s repertoire because of: 1.) becoming more compatible with people, and thus, having the most efficient conversations without having “annoying, unnecessary” conflicts with them, and 2.) studying people in different social settings is interesting to her

as a result of her jumping around and exploring different sides of her to different people daily, she does wind up suffering from mini identity crises and mental exhaustion very frequently

after a whole dismantle of her *mostly harmless* mind schemes (particularly by a close friend or two later on), her “true self” would be a deflective “tsundere-like” character, since her visceral reaction is for her to always slip into a convenient persona for the situation rather than being initially honest with herself and the people around her, and without the security of a “persona,” she gets flustered and embarrassed very *very* easily

hobbies in her free time include either being alone to sleep and not worrying about how to present herself or reading various works of (non)fiction (of many genres)/psychology to study people and how they tick (bonus: became a recent internet junkie after finding greater convenience in just finding articles and blogs instantly with a simple click)

irony: she finds talking to people inconvenient and tiring but she finds it intriguing to study them in all aspects of behavioral, cultural, and social means (so she kind of has to talk with people)

               *while still maintaining her amiable grace, she slowly detached herself from her acquaintances and classmates, keeping to herself a lot more while critically studying them increasingly as months went by; she began to talk with others only when it was a necessity

                                   *(occurred during her 1st year of Touou) a few months after she graduated from Teiko, she stopped going to the gym after school to observe the first string’s practices and only went to their games for Kōzō’s sake (especially when he fell ill) // her observant skills quickly picked up, even from their games alone, that the Teiko team’s dynamics have completely changed (which she relates this revelation back to Kōzō in the hospital)

reverted mostly back to her genuine, cordial self, but is still very spontaneous in showing different aspects of her personality in different situations, although most who know her can see right through her now (unless she really wanted to fool them, she probably could)

attempts to be more honest with herself and with others, especially in trying to unpack years of compartmentalization starting from her Teiko years

if she’s caught off guard, she will definitely become a flustered tsundere type of person

Background/Family

her multifaceted personality stemmed from her home life, where her parents became increasingly volatile and erratic when interacting with each other before they finally divorced her 2nd year of middle school

she constantly observed how her parents would initially act romantic on some days, but on many other days, they’d either tiptoe carefully around each other during conversations or they’d immediately fight

                    *rather than focusing on the discord of her home, she’d observe how they’d interact with each other in every situation and how despite being the two same individuals, they both act differently with each other every time they meet, thus feeding her intrigue on how individuals act in various social settings and cues

her parents would later on (shortly before divorcing) only meet up for motives of financial discussions, decisions on who she would live with for the week, etc. and they would no longer spend time together out of sentiment and love

                    *this imprinted into her belief that conversations that bring mutual benefit/reward are much better than other casual interactions, since she sees that they don’t provoke the unnecessary conflict/fights like other interactions do (e.g. seeing her parents fight when they talk about anything else)

Kōzō Shirogane (her great uncle, Teiko’s ex-coach) and Eiji Shirogane (a distant relative, Rakuzan’s current coach) are both from her father’s side of the family, hence she attended Teiko on behalf of Kōzō’s request in exchange for him paying for all of her school’s expenses (he wanted to spend more time with his great niece before he fell completely ill)

she and Kōzō would often be on the upper floor to observe practices together, and she would be immersed in studying how players would interact with each other on and off of courts; he was the one that got her into watching sports games (basketball in particular)

she graduated from Teiko a year before the GoMs did but would frequently visit their practices after school with Kōzō (until he fell ill)

she took after her mother’s surname after the divorce

Kōzō Shirogane fell ill shortly after her parents’ divorce

after graduating from middle school, she lives alone in an apartment under Shirogane’s name

she is not close with her parents but goes to visit each of them separately once in a while when Kōzō makes her go see them

she sees Kōzō as more of the father figure and cares deeply for him, and as for Eiji, she respects and admires him, but she isn’t close with him

ever since Kōzō fell ill, she would visit him in the hospital biweekly and update him on highlights from critical games from middle school and later on, inter-high and winter cup

Headcanons

she is the opposite of Kuroko in which she has a huge presence; it could be because of her hair color, hair pins, the many ways she carries herself throughout the day, or all of the above

why does she wear tons of hairpins? we don’t know, but she thinks they look nice and keeps the unruly hair out (for convenience)

sports games are fun for her to watch up close IRL because she can detect/study the mental games and simulations sparking across different players without having to talk to other people at all // televised games are useless because they cut a lot footage and cameras jump around too much for her to discern anything cohesive on the players

(if she ever got to speak with them) the most interesting people for her to converse with and study would be Midorima (because of his oha asa’s obsessions), Imayoshi, Hanamiya, Akashi, Teppei, Mitobe (she can actually understand him), and Momoi (when she doesn’t fawn over Kuroko)

no one knows what to genuinely get her for her birthday, let alone knowing her actual birthday; the closest thing they know is her zodiac sign

                     *throughout her deduced “birthday month,” different people will approach her with different gifts with what they thought she was interested in (because of her different personas she exhibited with each person): porn mags, antiques, shopping coupons, snacks, comic gags, etc.

                     *she keeps her birthday on the down low to prevent any chances of people being suspicious of her character when they try to throw a party for her and realizing she has these drastic “hobbies” and “interests” with each person // plus she doesn’t see a point of having a party because she knows how these familiar acquaintances would act in this particular situation

                     *she’s a fan of attending other people’s parties to observe them without being in the spotlight for once

she could be considered as part of the “uncrowned” generation considering her cognitive/mental skills and deduction (and she’s the same year as them)

if she ever joined a sports club, her critical role would be monitoring and improving cognitive (mental) acuity especially in the following brain functions of: information processing, memory storage, attention, and situational judgement (and how they all respond and handle high pressure), since she’s so keen on studying people and how they act in different situations

she would also study opponents’ levels of acuity especially during huge pressure and high stakes

she will note environmental factors as well as lifestyles on every player; home players would get the according lists of tasks to work on to improve their acuity (which may include diet changes, mental exercises, adjusted sleep schedules, etc.) on their own and get tested on set dates

                 *will also initially ask home players to do a quick self-survey on possible genetic factors that would affect cognitive performance as well as any prescription/drug history

during club hours, she shows a very professional, polite side that purposefully distances herself from the rest of the team, and she is initially solely there to do her job and get compensations from the coach (until eventually she stays because she actually cares for the team)

Kuroko: (Teiko + present)

polite with each other, although both will joke with each other in such a way that others can’t really tell if a joke just passed between them or if they’re being serious

she shifts her personality to be slightly more deadpan and delivers more dry humor when she’s around Kuroko

bonus: she addresses him with the nickname “Kurokuro” with the deadpan delivery, and others don’t know whether to laugh or be concerned

she doesn’t jump from his sudden appearances; while she doesn’t detect where he pops up most of the time, when he does, she just shrugs it off casually or does the dry “ahh i’m scared” or “wahhh you scared me” with surrendering hand motions whenever people around her get a genuine jumpscare from him

Kise: (Teiko + present)

with him she becomes more expressive and mildly snickers at their jokes together

the moment his fans come though, she’ll ditch him no questions asked; their constant interrogations and verbal grillings + fangirling are inconvenient to deal with // she’ll observe their behaviors from afar and take note on fan culture though, so she wouldn’t ditch him per say

she finds the fact that Kise can switch between a serious, determined persona and a flamboyant, energetic one so quickly really intriguing to witness every single time

Kise turns to her for mundane advice because “she’s just smart,” but she finds it really annoying and often gives him vague (but still valid) answers to shoo him away

Midorima: (Teiko + present)

she talks to him the most, mostly because his oha asa obsessions and meticulous rituals and schedules are ridiculously fascinating

she takes on a more serious persona (which is easy since she’s a pretty serious-like person to begin with) and subtly challenges Midorima, poking and prodding with very well-veiled questions to uncover the bottom of his obsessions

she does study up a bit of astrology and arcana books because of Midorima // one day he caught her with an astrology book on hand, and he immediately assumed she was into horoscopes as well, to which she did not deny a thing and let him convinced himself that she was (she’s gotta do what she’s gotta do)

after that ordeal, he gave her lucky items for her sign sometimes back in the Teiko days

just two smart brains having casual conversations about school

in the present day, if Takao was there, her persona switches to the one similar to what she’d use with Kise, and both would make snide remarks about Midorima

Midorima is slightly confused in seeing a subtly different side to her but he figured it was just Takao’s antics

Aomine: (Teiko + present)

when it was the days of “Puremine,” she was a supportive character, being slightly more blunt and more outspoken

she was extremely observant of his talent, and she was one of the first people to notice that he was going to bloom in talent before anyone else while also knowing its consequences // she subtly dropped hints for Aomine to slow down his pace in practicing, playing, etc. and to take a step back from basketball, but the blue-haired boy was an idiot so he didn’t pick them up one bit ((AKASHI DID THOUGH, UH))

with current Aomine, she’s presenting a more indifferent persona while further pushing a blunter side of herself when interacting with Aomine

like Imayoshi, she’s picked up on his dilemma and inner turmoil very quickly, but she wasn’t like Momoi who was actively trying to help him // she wasn’t enthusiastic in exerting effort when she knew that what he really needed to have his conflicts resolved was a definitive showdown on the courts

she doesn’t understand the appeal of porn mags at all, but feigns interest in them especially around Aomine (when they attend Touou Academy) to figure out why are people at her age so enthralled by them; Aomine definitely thinks she’s into them and gets her mags of half naked people for her and he’s extremely smug about it (“because we’re bros together” // “you’re welcome,” as he slaps her back way too hard)

she doesn’t really hang out with Aomine in Touou, maybe sometimes after school when she finds him up in the rooftop skipping practice when she’s in the mood to study how he ticks and annoy him for certain reactions to either prove/debunk her predictions

Momoi (Teiko + present)

she takes on a “girlier” and “cutesy” personality to be more compatible with Momoi to get along with her common interests

doesn’t really hang out with Momoi during the Teiko days unless Momoi approached her first with either data analyses, questions, or pleas to come with her to either: go shopping, drag Aomine, follow around Kuroko, etc.

Momoi addresses to her as “senpai” or “chan”

(during Teiko and present) asks her questions about her “love life” with Kuroko in a way that makes Momoi think she’s someone who believes in romance and lovey dovey things (she’s quite neutral about it IRL)

when Momoi finds out they both ended up at Touou, Momoi pounces on her every chance they get and drags her around because “we’re best friends!” // she goes along with it just to see how things turn out

she ends up being Momoi’s listening ear as she rants about Aomine’s awful habits or her worries about the team

Momoi begs and pleads her to join the team and assist them in some way; she outright refused, but Momoi is also intelligent in which she comes up with new offers everyday to try to convince her

she finally agrees when Momoi asked the coach to pay her a weekly salary (poor guy, but then again he’s rich) for her work and take Momoi’s word that the addition of her would be nothing but beneficial for the team’s success

because they're both on the same team together, they both spend even more time together to do analyses on both their own team members and other schools’ players

attends Touou’s games and only watches from first row seats in the audience in order to conduct naturalistic observations on both teams; she will never be on the benches unless it’s the semi-finals onwards

Murasakibara: (Teiko + present)

there isn’t much to study on this guy; he’s as straightforward as a single-file line

she either acts more of a casual childlike persona (by calling him “Muramura” or “Sakisaki-san”) or exhibits more of a stern, serious side (e.g. the persona used with Midorima) depending on the situation/context

she definitely bribes him with snacks and food to do convenient favors (in addition to using childish nicknames), or she throws the snacks far, gives them to someone else, eats them in front of him, etc. to elicit reactions from the man-child

she knows it’s better for her own good to NOT purposely provoke the scary side of Murasakibara, but when that side does come out for other reasons, it’s showtime for her; she’s going to be observing him with hidden glee

she doesn’t talk with him after graduating from Teiko; the next time she’ll see him is during the winter cup, particularly with yosen vs. seirin // it’s another movie marathon for her just watching every players and how they interact with each other (a LITERAL showdown between Teppei and Murasakibara.... Kagami and Himuro.... Himuro and Murasakibara—yeah it’s a field day)

Akashi: (Teiko + present)

she and ore-Akashi get along swell; she is at her surface self the most when conversing with him, not having a need to adjust herself that much from her initial “polite” persona

lots of theoretical talks and hypotheses in studying people and the world; they both respect each other very much

boku-Akashi is a different story; she starts avoiding him tactfully after his other side awakens

the saying “it takes one to know one” is especially true in this case: Akashi is very much aware of her two-facedness, and she is uncomfortable at the fact of him knowing such an innermost secret about herself

at the same time, she knows about where his “other side” “disappeared” to, whereas no one else hadn’t had a clue

both know about each other’s gimmicks and personalities, and throughout the rest of their years at Teiko, it’s a bunch of mind games and careful maneuverings around each other

Akashi finds it thrilling because it’s reminiscent of shogi

she finds this stressful because what the hell please leave me alone i’m trying to avoid you

after she got over her initial anxiety of this newfound revelation of new Akashi, she carefully treads this game and takes the advantage to study how this new side of Akashi ticks

he DEFINITELY caught what she was trying to do with Aomine in dropping hints; in response, he used his role as captain to push Aomine to try harder in games

she DEFINITELY caught what he was trying to do in pushing Aomine in “motivating” him; problem was, she wasn’t going to sacrifice her effort, wellbeing, and life to go against Akashi

after graduating from Teiko, when she still used to observe their practices and games, she was still very much uneasy and tried to downplay her presence to avoid Akashi’s scrutiny (sadly, her presence is too significant) // she really wished she was a Kuroko

she was able to breathe easier once she finds out later that they’re both going to different high schools; she continues to watch more of Rakuzan’s games after finding out that’s where Akashi ended up attending to figure his dynamics with his team + basketball and then predict his current mannerisms off the courts

when ore-Akashi comes back, she’s suspicious at first, but after confirming his character in person, she’s relieved that the “old him” was back (but slightly disappointed that his other self is gone // she kind of found that side of him more interesting to observe)

he still knows how many personas she has under her disposal, but he isn’t going to snitch any time soon

GoMs together: (Teiko + present)

to not give away the fact that she shows different sides to everyone, when everyone gathers/is nearby, she (at least attempts to) becomes a wallflower to observe everyone and act appropriately in the situation if she’s ever addressed to in the group; her name will always come up in some shape or form so she’s prepared to present a neutral persona without throwing people off

since the GoMs all attend different schools, it’s easier for her to socially maneuver around, however she is still cautious when near crowds (before/after games) and groups of people (such as Touou’s team) because they tend to call her over (but she’ll smoothly pretend she didn’t hear/was preoccupied and she’ll slip away)

Haizaki: (Teiko + present)

dear god, she hoped not to ever directly interact with him

he was a morbidly interesting person to observe, from far away // she’s trying to comprehend how this one middle schooler is already so immoral and violent

he’s definitely tried to hit on her, but she smoothly slipped away before he did anything else

it was a never-ending game of weasel and snake; he fancied her because she was someone who was mysterious and “hard to get,” but she’s always slipping away because he was extremely annoying to converse with and she definitely doesn’t want to end up in a fist fight with this guy

this constant chasing was significantly quashed after Akashi ordered him to quit the team (who’s to say that Akashi hadn’t also noticed that Haizaki was trying to harass her? respect women juice)

Haizaki noticed her outside the stadium before his match with kaijo a year later; she was outside ready to enter in before he blocked her way, but after a lot of sugar coating and sidestepping to try to diffuse the situation (she fooled him by feigning interest in him using a slightly more flirtatious, sly persona), she escaped from his grasp once again // it agitated him and that’s why he continued to prowl around outside before he chanced upon Alex and Himuro

Imayoshi: (present)

this guy is an Akashi; he picked up on her multifaceted personality frighteningly fast

except that instead of being wary and observant of her like Akashi would, this guy openly makes passive-aggressive remarks referring to her personality; no one except her would understand his real intentions behind those comments (they inwardly scare and piss her off)

he also had the upperclassman advantages to openly talk to her very casually and harp on her (on the other hand, Akashi was a year younger than her), so he very much does every thing to get under her skin and rile her up

she employs a more sarcastic persona to match up with Imayoshi, but that just makes him more determine to break her facades; in the end, to keep her cool, she just settled for a default polite persona while still shooting occasional flippant responses at him

TLDR; this guy has the same hobby as she does in getting reactions out of people to study them, except Imayoshi is an actual psychic in deciphering people out; perhaps he’s even better at these things than her

Momoi unintentionally helps her out by always telling Imayoshi to “stop bothering her so much,” and all he does is a mock-surrender, replying cheerfully that it was all in good fun

he definitely makes her job harder by trying to be a smartass when she gives him instructions and lists in how to improve his mental acuity; she quickly shuts his attempts down, and he always calls her an “absolute killjoy”

while she knows it’s beneficial to observe an individual who has a similar hobby like herself to see and compare the similarities/differences, Imayoshi makes it really difficult because his keen senses plus her huge presence makes him able to pick her out most of the time

                     *she’s only able to safely observe him when he’s on the courts

                     *other times, she dutifully avoids him unless when she’s doing her job

are they friends? it’s hard to say; they act like they’re familiar with each other but it’s a love-hate relationship // she respects his intuition but she frowns on his personality (it’s the fact that he acts like he knows everything and she knows he also puts up a few “nice guy” facades of his own)

he’s probably the first guy to actually break through her personas completely and get her to snap and yell at him unabashedly one evening when they were walking to a nearby convenience store because he was tagging along (Momoi was with Aomine at the time)

                     *at that moment, she probably also gave Imayoshi a shock for his life for the first time outside of the games

                     *she coughed and went back to her polite persona like nothing happened and that just made him so much more amused

they’re frenemies and rivals, trying to outdo the other in poking each other mentally and out-acting the other

first impressions of this kid: she pities him a lot

sometimes, she says various things to see if he‘ll apologize just to see which trigger words get him in a sweat to say “sorry”

she’ll either be a *gentler* polite person or take on a more stern/serious side (used with Midorima and sometimes Murasakibara); the latter would be used to try to toughen the poor guy up mentally

increasing Sakurai’s cognitive acuity would be the most difficult considering the fact that (combined with Momoi’s data) there’s a direct relationship between his physical and mental stamina; if he’s extremely exhausted, his mental sharpness declines dramatically along with it

he’s not considered the sharpest tool in the shed, and his naiveté tends to show when he asks innocent questions about her and her life, and one day, this guy accidentally hit the nail on the head when he asked about her family out of curiosity, which was her touchiest subject

                     *she did have a moment of shock and took some time to recollect herself and deflect the subject elsewhere, but Sakurai picked her hesitance up as a sign of offense and spewed a plethora of apologies (to which she had to calm the boy down)

                     *from that point on, although still curious, he became a lot more observant and cautious of how she acts around other people (at first he was watching so he can learn how to not offend her and overstep his boundaries)

as time progresses (especially after their loss at the winter cup), and the more Sakurai just asks her about many things, she does loosen up around him; he does eventually bring up the topic of family (not necessarily hers, but his own) to try to encourage her to talk about her own

Sakurai would be the type of person to be uncharacteristically determined and blunt in particular situations with people whom he considers his friends: here, he would confront her and asked if she was alright and if things were going okay at home

                     *out of curiosity in where he got that confidence boost and respect for him being mentally stronger, she does open up slowly one topic/talk at a time spread out for the next few weeks

both of their different curiosities for each other would lead to them being close friends ´･ᴗ･` (she makes him a more self-assured person and he gives her time to be her true self [or at least develop one], and other than annoying her with his occasional sorry’s, he doesn’t overwhelm her with his presence)
