I’ve done and received a lot of art of Caspian since I first made him back in 2021 [sweats nervously in 127 total pieces of art in Caspian’s toyhou.se gallery so far]. The point is, his design and features have been refined down to a science at this point. So I thought it was high time I did a proper turn around ref of him.

Some Caspian basic info below the cut!

This is Caspian as he first appears during Personal Story. He’s 30 at the time, a captain on the captain’s council in Lion’s Arch, and has already established himself as a pirate legend from coast to coast. He’s a career pirate and has been for almost his entire life. He’s been holding the front lines against Zhaitan’s bone ships since he first went onto account at the age of 7 but that’s been an increasingly losing battle as Zhaitan becomes more active and more tactical (and they continue to lose capable ships of the line to skirmishes and to gold). At this point in Caspian’s life, he’s at odds with the consortium who has bought a seat on the council and is meddling in a big way for the sake of commerce over defense of LA. Other details: -He’s very musically inclined! He likes to sing shanties (and has a lovely baritone singing voice) and play his fiddle.

-He doesn’t have a lick of magic in his entire body (He’s tried conjuring the elements before to either disastrous or lackluster effect...) and so relies heavily on his engineering and holosmithing in fights. He fights with his holodeck, pistols, and a laser sword that doubles as his walking cane when it’s stowed in the sheathe.

-He can’t walk without a custom leg brace that immobilizes his right ankle due to traumatic injury when he was 26 (He was struck by a scatter shot when he and his crew were betrayed by the second mate and ambushed by two other pirate crews. The medic, Merry, had to prioritize healing to his vitals over the healing to his leg since there’s only so much healing magic a body can take at once.) With the leg brace and cane for additional stabilization, he walks with a light but noticeable limp that one might mistake for a swagger.

-Caspian is poly bisexual but doesn’t start taking his relationships more seriously until after the events of Heart of Thorns due to not having a good example of love growing up and also his intense prioritization of freedom (I may discuss this in a separate post as it’s a long story, but basically the events of Heart of Thorns forced him to realize that his feelings for his sylvari boyfriend, Daimine, ran deeper than he had been willing to previously accept....the lengths he went to save Daimine, even over the safety of his crew was eye opening for him in a big way) There’s a lot more I’d like to say about Caspian but I’ll probably do so in separate posts. i finally got the whole blog set up and fancified to my liking :3

now that that’s out of the way, hi, i’m ale, and design is my passion. i drew all of our refs for Exploration, and now i’d like to divulge some details about why we designed characters the way we did!

i’ll be going in lineup order, so feel free to pull those bad boys up and follow along :]

Cpt. Huggyface

at Raven’s request, we have made him look more like a creature. we really wanted him to look like no Earthling monkey, so that it was less obvious compared to Bob, the other monkey in Fair City.

we’ve removed his shirt. Huggy can change color at will, and blue is his most iconic color, so we decided to just. make him blue.

his lightning bolt insignia is also blue. this is because it isn’t actually an insignia, it’s a scar. it’s grown over with fur now, but the color changing is still a little off in that area.

we gave him an aviator's helmet because he is one. it was a lot more interesting than his original.

his antenna curves slightly because i thought it looked stupid sticking straight up.

another note on his antenna: it's not part of his helmet, it's his actual antenna.

WordGirl

we have her a ponytail for her ease of flying and fighting people. keeps it from getting in her face.

one little flyaway on her ponytail is star-shaped - because stars are WordGirl’s shape :]

we also gave her a star-shaped mask to make it easier for her to conceal her identity.

the neck of her cape is now a little turtleneck, it keeps her warm in those high altitudes.

her gloves and boots are based off how they look in the comics. also i like drawing defined shoes :]

WordGirl has blue eyeshines because she has a nictitating membrane, like a cat. also, her eyes are star-shaped because those are her shape.

her sclera are slightly yellowish, due to her powers. her eyes are also more of a dark red for the same reason.

you can't see them, but she has little fangs. adds to her alienness.

Becky

Becky has two upward flyaways on her head. this is because she has a bee motif (spelling bee), and those are the antenna

her headband has a small gold thing at the end, because it doubles as the headband for her helmet.

also has star-shaped eyes, but hers are slightly smaller, and less obviously noticeable.

has a bee necklace, because of her bee motif.

the pleated skirt was an accident i drew before looking at a reference. but i drew those pleats, so i had to keep them.

we gave her skirt pockets, because pockets are a nice thing for skirts to have!

we kinked her and Wordgirl's hair. she deserves curly hair with volume <3

Tobey

he has stupid hair. one of his cowlicks looked very awkward, so i decided to make it reminiscent of his robits antennae.

he has sectoral heterochromia - we agree that Tobey has heterochromia, but we agree slightly stronger that his eyes are blue.

his knees are a little scuffed up. i picture he's fallen off the robits a few times and scraped em.

his socks are lowered slightly. he's older now, so we thought his socks should be more reasonable.

Steven Boxleitner + Two-Brains + Squeaky

Steven's ref is chocked full of references to his fate as Two-Brains.

first is the tail-like flyaway on the back of his head. it's inspired by a comic character, and is meant to be reminiscent of a mouse tail.

the same goes for Two-Brains's two brain, it's shaped like a mouse to resemble Squeaky, and the flyaway of the hair tuft under it is meant to be her tail.

i noticed that Squeaky actually has a little bit of a snaggletooth, so i gave that, along with the normal mouse chompers, to Two-Brains.

his bowtie resembles mouse ears

on Steven, his lab coat sleeves are actually tucked into his long gloves. on Two-Brains, they are cut off.

Steven wears a button-up shirt tucked into his pants. Two-Brains wears a t-shirt.

Two-Brains belt is falling out, because Squeaky does not care for clothes and TB must put them on as fast as possible.

inspired by the same comic character as before, the tail of his labcoat is also meant to resemble the tail of a mouse.

Steven has dressy shoes, with spat-like coloring that matches with Becky's. Two-Brains has sneakers that are inspired by a lot of furry art i see where their toes are out - TB does not have his toes out, but the lines are meant to resemble paws.

Squeaky does not let TB tie his laces.

Squeaky herself resembles a dumbo rat, despite being a mouse. Her not looking like the ideal mouse is what lead to her being on sale.

Two-Brains has little chin whiskers, because mice have So Darn many. that's also what his little zigzag flyaway is meant to resemble.

Chuck

Chuck's lettuce is a bit more leafy and his eyes are dots to add to his innocent, cuteness factor.

Raven told me he has pickles, so i drew a little pickle on him.

Chuck has freckles that resemble the crumb of white bread. or he has a crumb that resembles freckles.

he has a turtleneck, we didn't think his ma would want him to go out without a sweater.

we couldn't figure out his shoes - so we decided to make them rainboots that look like green olives.

Butcher

we gave him blue eyes because it's good contrast.

i gave him a little face bandage because i thought it would be funny if he cut himself shaving.

i gave him a little chest hair. you can probably guess why :,]

gave him generic loafers based on a line where he mentioned his shoes not having laces.

Lil' Mittens

gave him mittens <3

he now has a little red collar with a bell, because i think once Butcher lost him once, he had to make sure he never lost him again. his collar is red because it's the meatiest color.

The Whammer

we once came across a furry wordgirl au, and started to think about what the other characters would be. obviously, we decided that Whammer was a bull. we decided to take that idea and run with it, and make him a cute little cowboy.

he has cow ears. Raven pitched the idea, and initially i put them on his helmet, and then where human ears would go. Raven eventually had to kick me and tell me to put them were cow ears would go. Raven was right.

i think cow eartags are really cute, so i had to give him one.

initially, i gave Whammer an anti-nursing tag on his nose. Raven thought it was too much and told me to make it a nose ring. you know, like a BULL.

i get nervous when a character design uses too many colors, and everyone agreed that Whammer's outfit was really ugly. so we decided to make it purple and orange, like his mask, to make those "his" colors.

Invisi-Bill

Invisi-Bill is a neat little creature, and ever since i started drawing him, i decided to give him elf ears for no real reason than to make him more creaturelike.

in A Questionable Pair, it's shown Invisi-Bill has his ears pierced. i look advantage of his long ears and gave him an earring with a chain.

he has I cufflinks because he's Invisi-Bill! yay!

he has a tooth gap because he is my favorite and i have a tooth gap :]

he has 2-tone wingtip shoes because he is my favorite i like 2-tone wingtip shoes :]

Big Left Hand Guy

blhg has slightly darker skin, because i think he's related to the stout, tan-skinned bank guard.

i gave him a cane based on a mention in the fanfic BLHG's Big Dilemma by DandyMaximilian. helps him not stand knocked over slightly.

he has one gay earring, based on the designs of rootbeertime. i just put it on the right ear. i think it's funny he would do that.

Ms Question

has yellow sclera, because that's the color her eyes were when she first got her powers.

i've seen at least two fanarts of her with question mark earrings, and i think it's really, really cute.

we thought that her little black wrist braces were silly. we decided to full-on give her black gloves.

Raven really loved the little gold trim of WordGirl's boots in the comics, and wanted to give this lady also with red boots the same touch.

The Coach

none of us really care for The Coach, so he is basically the same as canon. except for his cuffs!!! i had to fix his cuffs!! they were the wrong color!!!

Kid Math

when we decided to give Becky a bee motif, we also decided that Kid Math should also have a bug. we decided on making him a termite, because Hexagon is a math-based society, and architecture is pretty mathy.

we replaced his cape with wings. it adds to his alien nature. additionally, winged termites are young creatures who are sent out to scout for new territory. Kid Math is young, and it relates slightly to our arc for him.

he has hexagon-shaped eyes to contrast WordGirl's star-shaped ones.

he has compound eyes like a fly, and orangey sclera, to add to his buginess and alienness.

he has little fangs.

Mr. Big

mostly the same as canon, but i upped his bunnyness and fancied his shoes.

his tie is now striped to resemble his mind control beams.

i thought the little kerchief in his pocket looked ugly, so i replaced it with a itty bitty squishy bunny.

he also has bunny cufflinks :]

The Squishy Bunnies, i guess

i just made them cute. i couldn't bring myself to draw their canon designs

Leslie

basically the same as canon, but bunnyed her up a little. we thought it would be funny if Mr. Big had no dress code, aside from "one bunny item", so we gave her a bunny hairclip and bunny earrings.

her choker is black now because we didn't think the purple really needed to be there

Granny May

made her hair more curly, because she is a black woman.

made her pearls slightly more yellow, because they're old.

her pearl necklace has a little diamond shape on it as a button to turn into her metal suit.

made the band on her dress green and a bow, because we thought it was cute and old ladyish :]

gave her a cane, because she's a little older than she used to be. also, it's a new weapon against WordGirl

Colonel Mustard

gave him some hair back. mostly because i thought his exposed cheek was ugly, and figured i'd give him the paws back while i was at it.

Victoria Best

we thought it would be fun if she wasn't really blonde.

i lowered her pigtails and made her ties bows, because she's a little older now, and the bows were cuter.

at the request of Robin, she now has freckles to resemble her brother.

we gave her slightly pinkish nudey eyeshadow, because we felt like she would be the type to wear it.

her eyes are inspired by ocular albinism, her eyes are blue, but in certain lights, become red, like when her eyes glow.

her skirt is pleats now, like Becky.

we gave her mary janes, because they're kinda like Becky's silly shoes, but Better.

Lady Redundant Woman

we made her slightly paler, to resemble a blank piece of printer paper.

made her eyes CMY, like a printer.

her downward-facing eyelashes are meant to resemble ink dripping from her eyes.

canonically she has lips, but none of us thought the pink suited her. so we gave her a cute black upper lip, like ink.

we pinked her suit slightly to moreso resemble the magenta of a printer.

i made her belt a floppy disk. i just thought it'd be funny.

we gave her boots a white trim, because Raven thought her boots were white.

Maria, Charlie, Meatball

basically unchanged from canon

Tac's OC Ref Masterpost!

Heya everybody! I'm not sure where the thought for this came from but I wanted to make a post that just has all of my OCs' refs in it in case anyone ever needs to find them and doesn't wanna ask me for them (which ur always welcome to do btw!) or doesn't wanna go digging through their Toyhouse galleries. This will be linked in my pinned post as well, so if you ever need to find it again, it'll be there! All the refs are below the read more since this is going to be a really long post, so be prepared for that if you take a look lol. Sorry for long delay in replies - I wanted to make a big and cool post with all of my headcanons but I procrastinated it for almost half a year💀💀

several parts it is!!

So anyway let's start with something light and what I've already put into graphic explanations(?)

I feel like I have to mention that in my case I have different parts of their clothes/bodies represent their Life at the moment. For some people it's color of their eyes, for others - hair, or some markings on skin, or some, uh, modifications(crystals, color of feathers, plants)? Idk it's minecraft skins I work with what I can

First one is our beloved dead but pretty(tm) lifeseries!Cleo

First it's a frame from my "It took me by surprise" animatic and here you could see some of my headcanons. The most obv one is vines-herbs-grass-flowers growing out of her hair. For different Life goes different type of flora. Also patches of different skins(?).

Rough reference piece from several months ago. Don't @ me I'm more comfortable at digital art

For clothing I don't think I have something unique??? But it's self-explanatory anyway

Let me be clear I don't really care for his POV of Double Life but I DID watch his POV of Limited Life so yeah

I don't think I have ever drawn him before this messege so it was my first attempt and it kinda stick with me

As you could see I went kinda overhead with his design. I'm sorry that The iconic Red Sweater had to go😔😔😔

He is an Avian in my headcanons but I wanted to give him something more than just wings as I see in different headcanons of different talanted artists. Claws for feet it is! Also little ear-wings just looks nice imo

When dealing with bird-like legs (or any other hybrid legs) you have to think of a good piece of clothing that would be appropriate, comfortable and that it should look nice. Idk if I managed to achieve it (tbf it's a sketch ref) but overall it looks well-put, it's easy to draw and I think it should be comfy. At least I hope so!

For his Life indicator I've chosen colors of his, uh, under-feathers?? I'm sorry I don't have the correct anatomical name for them and words in general are not my tea but I hope you all can see what I'm talking about

That design was in mind for Life Series only and I used it for post-Ep1 of Limited Life animatic but he decided to change his skin in Limited Life Ep2 and I just cope with it bc for the love of me I couldn't figure how leather jacket could work with all that

You can see clothes a little bit more here

Glasses felt like a fun accessory at the moment but in the actual animatic it gave really cool 'Anime villain' effect

So yeah. That's pretty much it for them two

Arigale Characters Judith: "She will be praised" Chit: This one is more complicated. Chit was originally named like "chitter chatter", noise, as the old awful man who named him upon finding him didn't care for him. The name can also mean: "loveable/heart", so jokes on the old man. but uh if so there’s this family of edwardian anthro dogs i am working on. Robbie was born into the family and married Shelley to keep up appearances, and Shelley married him as she could present as a woman and be greatly elevated in financial status. they adopted susan, and robbie’s in a rather unstable relationship with Some Girl/Guy named ernie…robbie is kinda taking advantage of his status and political importance to do whatever he wants. He is not really a good person and i am kindaaaa poking fun at a few billionaires with his character. shelley is a woman who is rightfully angry at her husband being a awful guy and just wants a normal life while still trying to appease her husband so she doesn’t have to deal with the consequences of getting on the wrong side of royalty, susan’s some strange child who thinks robbie and shelley are cool but sorta starts to realize something’s a bit funky about them. anyways so i was wondering how i’d instill motifs of animals other than dogs in these dogish-creatures that relate to their personality whilst still keeping them a canine species, and also how if you have any tips on conveying info through clothing in character design..or any other thing you think i could change with their designs for the better…

Ooh fun! To start with, it’d help to figure out which breed of dog each character is based on and work from there. Once you put a specific name to the appearance you’re looking for, it gets so much easier to find visual references for it. (And yes, visual references will very much be your friends, especially in the early stages of character design.) Judging by these character sheets, we’ll want to link Susan with reptiles and amphibians, Robbie with barn owls, and Shelley with shelled creatures. But first, some general notes:

I’ll admit I straight up forgot cereal was a thing in the Edwardian era (which covered the period from 1901-1910 for anyone unfamiliar), so the fact that Robbie inherited a cereal company kinda threw me for a loop. But yes, cereal had existed for decades by that point, though based on my research (see above), they didn’t advertise with animal mascots like the owl in Robbie’s ref. A lot of ads just had illustrations of consumers enjoying the food or holding up the package, along with a paragraph or two explaining why this brand is the best choice. (And yeah, I know Cream of Wheat’s not cereal, but it’s breakfast food so I’m counting it.) If you want to be historically accurate, understand that companies back then had very different approaches to branding from how they handle it today.

Speaking of accuracy, I’m no historian but I’m pretty sure Edwardian folks wouldn’t use the terms “asexual” or “transgender” to describe themselves. Not sure if you’ve written these labels into your story’s dialogue, but it’s worth mentioning just in case. Also, I’m not sure what the blue and white flag represents-? I searched all over for it but didn’t get any results. The placement next to the ace flag led me to believe it was some kind of pride thing, but even the more exhaustive lists didn’t include it. Some clarification would be nice.

Robbie’s description says he’s “very gender conforming” yet he squeals when he’s pleased? Wouldn’t that be considered a pretty effeminate thing to do? I’ve never heard of a single “man’s man” who’d (voluntarily) raise his voice to such a high pitch on a regular basis. Just sayin’, you’ll want to be sure your descriptions are consistent. I also did a double take at the fact that he’s nearly a full foot taller than Shaq, but depending on the average height for this species in this time period, it might be easier to buy. (Fyi, the average height for men who turned 18 in the Edwardian era was around 5′4″, and even shorter in previous years.)

Now for the redlines:

Something I noticed consistently in these drawings was a lack of body structure, as if the character’s outlines were drawn first without an understanding of internal volume or how things fit together. There’s also a tendency to draw characters’ eyes on the sides of their heads, as if they’re fish rather than dogs. A carnivorous land mammal would have front-facing eyes that resemble wedges in profile. If the characters have a solid construction, it’ll be easier to build on it when dealing with symbolic motifs and such.

About those motifs, it helps to gather photo reference of whatever you’re trying to represent in the design, and get a sense of the shapes and colors that comprise it.

It also really helps to get specific. We already know Robbie’s associated with barn owls, but Shelley and Susan are more open ended. If each of them had to pick one (maybe two) species of amphibian/lizard or shelled creature as their favorite, which would it be? Or, which species most closely resemble their own personalities? Narrowing the field to one or two animals will help focus your research.

The next step is figuring out which elements you want to use, and where. This depends on how subtle or overt you want the symbolism to be.

Basically, the more cells you check off in a chart like the one above, the more noticeable the symbolism will be. If you want to use only shapes or only colors, or only use symbolism in the accessories and body, for example, you’re free to do so. It’s also important to note that symbolism in certain locations in the design will be more noticeable than in others. Let’s say you wanted to use a crablike orange for Shelley. If you used it to color a small accessory (like her bracelet), the tie-in would be pretty subtle. But if you used it to color her face, the place on a character our eyes are most drawn to, it’d stand out like a neon sign.

There’s a sliding scale of subtlety in individual parts, as well. It’s up to you to decide how closely you want them to resemble the original source. Here’s what happened when I experimented with the doggos’ ears, with the resemblance ranging from subtle to overt:

It’s all relative to what feels right for the character. Hope this helps!

POST SESSION 1 DLDND CHARACTER THOUGHTS

holy SHIT y’all the hiatus is over w a long ass session to start us off. i passed out so hard post session but now. i have things to say abt peoples characters and im going to say them. plus an added pronoun check for my own memory. this is a long post so ill pop it all under da cut. tldr at the end 2

IZZY | ALASTRELLE (they/he)

i LIKE THEM. i like them. i was very eyes emoji at their intro and im rly excited to see a druid. i have a feelin that theres a lot more 2 alastrelle than meets the eye but im not rly sure what. we got an insight check that he seems to know more than hes letting on... but like. idk. i have a feelin that theyre more like... they know stuff but not in a malicious way? mayb im bein 2 optimistic and alastrelle is just waiting 2 absolutely decimate every1. they DID heal ma’el tho so like... i think they do not want this. they seem kind. i want 2 know more.

CADILLAC | R-D 2.04 (pronouns unknown - seems to vary)

everybody is so mean 2 me image. r-d is rly. look. i love them but i also hate them. he’s so fuckin funny but also.... gestures broadly at the last hour of the session. she seems 2 b tha only character built 4 outright combat. at least from what weve seen. it seems like a lot of the others went 4 classes that cld offer support (from my limited knowledge of the classes themselves plus dnd) whereas cadillac built (literally) a beast. she seems really cool and had some rly amazing moments first session. designated antagonist im super interested to see how every1 is going 2 interact w the person who drew 1st blood!! also tha character we got the most backstory 4 session 1. kinda dont blame it for the murders but. i dont want any pcs to die T_T

NOX | DOCTOR (PALL’OR) REMAEDI (he/him, okay with they)

HE’S COOL... the outfit is very wizardly but we know hes a cleric. am i right when i look at the ref art and see that hes purple. he is purple. he also shotgunned an unmentioned vial (WHY DID NO 1 ASK ABOUT THAT AUAUEUEGEUGH) and the rice and meat. chuggin ig. seems like... cautious? mayb suspicious but remarkably chill. well. i say chill. again. gestures at the last hour or so of the session. LUV the weapon design. would luv 2 see it do some more damage (see “r-d is built for combat” above. terrifyink). i want 2 know more abt his eyepatch and stitches and general deal. do we think hes an unethical doctor guys. would he kill u for like. fun.

CERIN | EIWN (she/her)

pretty lady. fllushed emoji. i love her design a lot its rly cool. i assumed she was druid bc of it but idk if pep would have allowed class double ups? plus cerin is bein v secretive... possibly monk? eye dee kay im rly just guessin at this point. shes so funny 2 the bit w the shelter being her height and alastrelle tryin 2 fix it secretly was great. i dont have much 2 say abt her yet but i think she will turn out to b EXTREMELY interesting. i kno 4 a fact cerin will say smth and then the dash will explode w how much we love eiwn.

RIVER | MA’EL(VAR) (he/him)

IS HE NORMAL??? squints. i dunno... intro was. suspicious. i did like him tryin 2 explain stuff to r-d that was kinda funny. he seems to b like... relatively level headed? i struggled to get a read on his personality except like... suspicious of others but wants 2 cooperate. clearly doesnt want 2 b here el oh el. HE DID ALMOST DIE 2 TIMES WITH NO IDEA WHAT WAS HAPPENING EL EM AY OH. i wonder how hes gonna react to that.

PEP | MIYM (she/her, okay with they)

MIYM MY FUCKIN BELOVED. kenku AND a bard? plus card themed LDFKJ. alto WISHES he could. the resume made me laugh sm and she generally just seems so nice... i like that she’s immediately forming more positive relationships w tha others... probably intentional on pep’s part as a filler character for the pair offs. i was wondering why they were getting such an outright dmpc and was wondering if she was gonna get killed early... i was real newvous. its cool tho. i like her a lot. very glad miym explained the whole premise 2. thank u from da audience i was a little like WHAT THE HELL. but in a good way

TL;DR - I LIKE THEM ALL. i think theres a LOT of things we havent touched (obvs. it was 1 session) but a lot of seeds and references to things wer made i think. also it looks like we got a lot of elves lol. im generally just rly excited 2 see them play again and having consensual and established pvp will make things VERY interesting. i wonder what the symbols on the like... bracelets/necklaces are 4. and what happens when someone dies.... do they both go to zero/make death saves? i guess we will see....

My Art Summary for 2022!

(Under the cut I'll go into more details for each month, for memory's sake. Warning: It's LONG.)

Come one, come all for your opportunity to see all of the drawings I should have posted but never did! The ones that make me work harder every december to remember when tf i drew what! The ones that, in missing, make it seem like i only draw once a year--! (going through my twitter media tab is depressing LMAO)

JANUARY

[Pictured: Iola in Prenda clothing. There was a Twitter Post going around asking you to draw your WoL in your country's traditional clothes. Ofc I didn't skip the opportunity to do it! And drew my BF's WoL too for good measure. Still my fav drawing of the year!]

Also worked on a VTuber model for a friend (i drew it as a bust january last year; then this year was asked to expand it to full body). It was very challenging, but also fun!

For the rest, I designed some backstory NPCs for Asera (Daimyorus childhood friend, his goddess and a mage that helped us multiple times); and drew some twitch emotes for a client. Was a fresh, fun start. I remember having a lot of fun and finding that month quite relaxing.

FEBRUARY

Further work was done on the VTuber model, a lot of parts that weren't quite working before were redrawn. He was taking form!! Now that most of the work was done, also did a ref sheet to go with it. I couldn't wait to see him moving!

That's when I started preparing to open commissions for realz, trying to think of prices and set up examples. I drew some BGs and the Complexity Guide, and set most of the boring things up. I plan to open comms either Jan 2023 or February 2023, so let's hope all the work paid off~

MARCH

But yeah, most of the month was dedicated to the VTuber model, working to fix it as the rigger found issues. Ref Sheet was finished this month. I'll stop mentioning the model, but the back and forth lasted till june or so?? Had to fix all of his toggles; and redraw his entire hair to allow for a better 3D effect when moving (it went from 3~6 layers to over 20). This was my first time working on vtuber models, so there was A LOT to learn. It surprising how many pitfalls there is in vtuber making. I'm very proud of how it turned out, and eternally grateful to the rigger (and to my friend) for being so patient with me. I was sent a small demo of what he looks like, and seeing your drawing move so beautifully like that feels magical!! There's still much to design and draw before he can debut, but hope you can support him then!

I've had them since childhood, and still love them, even if I gave up on the book idea. Will make an actual post once all is done and I can go back to their character illusts uwu

JULY

SO.MUCH.FUN

I'm 100% going back next year! This event just proved how much I love drawing people's OCs. I really want to be a commission artist so I can do that for a living. Sadly I didn't get to draw everyone I wanted, plus I wasted a lot of time trying to look through OCs while the website was dying LMAO Next year I'll come prepared!

Also I drew that Spring picture to use as a reference in her profile there. I missed drawing her!

AUGUST

Mostly worked on commemorative stuff. Anniversary chibi for Brie; that Under Maintenance pic; Thank You for DL message for 'Loving You Fully' and 'Still Shining'. Also designed some outfits (and painted some sprites) for Mythic Meetup: Midnight Mystery (not released yet!).

Started a bday gift for my boyfriend, but something kept looking 'off' about it so I didn't finish in time. Turns out it was overblended... And will require a redraw. Sorry boyfriend TT But my wife (tm) needs to look perfect!!

Also made the design for our new RP characters:

SEPTEMBER

OCTOBER

[Pictured: Old OC redraw, for my Commission Guide. Decided to do it after a client asked for clarification if an old drawing was halfbody or fullbody (august last year, Torunn sitting down).]

They're really old OCs of mine. Ever RP-ed in Deviantart groups? I did!!

Cecilia (<-) is pretty much a Iola prototype: salve maker and potion seller who lives with her dad (who taught her the craft). One day he collapses during work, and Cecilia ends up overworking herself to afford his medicine and other living expenses. In desperation, she joins The Guild as a novice magician for money, and gets herself involved on a war she never intended to join.

Celticca (->) is a archer and aspiring musician who wants to make the most beautiful song (tm) for her family. She's very sweet, but naïve and scatterbrained. I didn't have much planned for her, but had a lot of fun seeing her constantly get involved with Evil/Neutral alligned characters w/o noticing LOL

....Now that I think about it, she's literally a FFXIV bard, before I knew anything about XIV.

The rest of October was focused on Magni's Birthday Project and my YCH Halloween Commissions.

The 3rd character was Rosemary, but I didn't ask to draw her so she's missing :( I do want to draw all of them at some point. We accidentally made "Spy x Family, but it's horror and Loid wants to run away" LOOOL I love this trio!!

Made 2 adoptables, but since they went unsold I decided to remove them and redraw for next year:

October was so much fun!! Sadly it let me completely drained by the end of it. I got hit with such a HUGE art block it was like my hands just... Forgot how to draw. Everything came out weird. Sadly, that resulted on me having to drop a drawing I was making for Brie :/ Hoping I can pick it back up soon... (better late than never right?)

It's around that time I decided to work on an AI redraw. Used Crayon (old Dall-e Mini) to create some monstrosity for me and tried to turn it into an actual drawing.

This drawing is a bit painful to look at, because of all the self doubt and bad feelings attached to it. But I want to finish it someday. My prompt was something stupid like 'cute anime girl having fun'. I want to remain true to the prompt and make her meeting with lil ladybug feel warm and fun!

...Like of the feelings I was missing back then, and am just now starting to get back.

TL;DR: Take breaks or you'll break.

NOVEMBER

Managing burnout through most of it. Eventually just decided to stop fighting and played games instead. Even with the frame drops, Atelier Ryza is pretty fun~ Hoping to go bk to it soon.

DECEMBER

...By drawing Iola as a sheep herder. It was much more fun than it sounds. I didn't care for polish at all, just seeing Iola in a cute outfit LMAO It's... A mess of a drawing. But it's MY mess of a drawing. I feel this thought calmed my mind a lot.

Also went for my first ever Art Party. It was fun, tho brain did get in the way after a bit, as expected ^^;;; Still want to go to these more often!! It's fun to draw & chat with others.

For random drawings, all I have is a(n embarrassing) fanart of Elf from Isekai Ojisan. I'll post eventually..... (that anime is hilarious)

For now I have a commission and a collab to take care of, and a certain Moon Goddess to draw as soon as possible~ Will be doing my best these next few days, and hope Iola can be my sheperd and guide me to the path of 'having lots of fun drawing again'.

Nationality: Korean

Profile:

Sharp-tongued and chic, Nabi Yuu is the long-suffering caretaker of Ramshackle Dorm. He was an active model before being transported to the world of Twisted Wonderland. Despite his complaints, Nabi cares deeply for his friends and won't ever hesitate to help them out in a tight spot.

Trivia:

Nabi's birthday is on Japan's Cat Day, and his name also holds a double entendre in Korean to refer to both a butterfly and a cat.

His athleticism isn't bad... for the first minute or so. That's about when his stamina tanks.

Nabi is very prone to overheating, so he opted to ditch the uniform blazer

His natural hair color is black (like his eyes), but it takes a good few months for sanbaka to notice. The longetivity of hairdye in this world is a marvel of its own.

Sanbaka also thought his first name was Yuu until they exchanged Magicam IDs before winter holiday.

Due to being raised by his traditional grandparents, Nabi is not well-versed in pop culture and also struggles with handling technology.

The Yuu grandparents are Buddhist, and his prayer beads are from them. Nabi himself isn't extremely devout.

He is aware that Crowley isn't trying particularly hard to find him a way back home, but for some reason he doesn't seem to mind.

Character Relationships: (there's obvs a lot so i'll try to condense it LOL)

Sanbaka: Nabi is kind to the weak, and harsh to the unruly. With that being said, Deuce is often treated with significantly more grace than Ace and Grim.

Malleus: OH BOY COULD I WRITE A TRUCKLOAD. I enjoy him and Nabi either platonic or otherwise; for me it's two lonely people who were able to approach each other without any prejudices and form a connection.

Epel: Country boys with close ties to their meemaws UNITE

Jack: "Look like delinquents but are actually studious" solidarity

Vil: Nabi admires Vil both as a model, and for confidently living a life true to herself.

Leona: It's like a kitten standing fearlessly in the face of a lion

Cater: Spicy food lovers! And Nabi is able to recognize that Cater's cheerful demeanor is sometimes a mask, due to his own past.

Azul: Initially held animosity towards him for obvious reasons. After Azul's overblot, Nabi recognizes his tenacity to fight back against his former life. Azul loathes that Floyd calls Nabi "Little Shrimpy" despite the latter being 1cm taller than him.

he’s a second year at kyoto tech, and hopelessly in love with inumaki-(no one knows if it’s requited or not-but inumaki is…rather repulsed by nori)

He’s actually really strong; and he can’t feel pain. Cannot. At all.

Does not like the fact he is strong as fuck, because he wants someone to protect him rather than him always being the one to protect people-

Cursed technique: My boy nori can write a command or any like, verb or describitory word and apply it to anything that has a certain amount of cursed energy!! For it to work he’d have to write it down, for ex like ‘weak=it/someone would be weakened’ or “invisible=self explanatory” and stick it onto the object/person.

He doesn’t need an adhesive, because it somehow stays by itself. He keeps a pen and small papers with him at all times.

He can do things like “run away” or “stop talking”, more command-ish words as to the more vague words but it takes more energy, and his hand cramps up easily. He’s also left handed bc he’s my oc and I make the rules-

In simpler terms:

Nori can write a command word down on a small sheet of paper covered with his cursed energy, and stick it onto objects/people with a certain amount of cursed energy.

The command-ish words are single kanji characters.

CRYING IN THE (WINTER)CLUB

Before starting the ID I want to say there are some OC characters in this, and I’ve described their general appearance in this google doc for ref!

Marigold is sitting idle on the grass, looks curiously at snow on his petal hair, maybe even irritated. Near him on a pink cushy sofa with green highlights and little yellow flower designs sits Rose playing his flute eyes closed and legs kicking casually. In this picture his hair is longer. His hair tie rests on a sofa arm.

Behind him the Carlas are making a Snow Carla. Fortune Teller Carla is smiling and keeping a camellia on the snow figure. A red sleeveless dress and red gloves are drawn on her, wears hair in double buns with sparkling grey flower bands encircling buns, green eyeshadow. Another Carla laughs heartily, adding more snow. A green buttoned dress with yellow ''fluff'' and striped brown cap with same fluff is drawn on her. The third Carla's face is away from viewer, she too is adding snow. A blue dress like Elsa's icy dress and a purple flower crown is drawn on her, though the cape is actually worn. The Snow Carla has one swirly eye dug in, a button eye with leaf lashes and branch eyebrow, carrot nose, red wax lips stuck on. From the camellia tree behind the red-clothed one, a pair of green cat eyes with thick brown brows stare.

Farther away on the other side Kamal is walking in, holding a half eaten pitha in hand while approaching. He holds a bag with a box saying ''To Kamal, with love''. In the artists interpretation his face is acne scarred. He wears a blue-black sweater, purple scarf, blue pants, brown winter shoes with white fluff at the top, one gold earring, frog shape chew necklace, hair is in a bun.

At the center Trevor is reaching up with a stool and fiddling with a giant vibrating hot chocolate machine. He wears his usual coat with added blue jeans, red scarf with yellow and black stripes, leopard print heels, green goggles, mask for mouth, silver ear piercings. Hair is in a mullet and nails are sharp and black. The machine has a funnel streaming black smoke, and many bright devices on it. In the center of it is a radioactive symbol. On one side to its bottom is a part reading ''DEVIL MODE'' in allcaps with fire graphics, a big red button in a glass case is above it with a note that reads ''Never(underlined) touch'', stuck with a smiley face pin. There is a mounted fish figurine on one handle. The hot chocolate is fizzling over the brim.

Behind him a long table laiden with food is seen. There are swirl designs on the wood's sides. There are red and green apples, borscht, three colored drinks, yorsh, glintvein , 3 tier chocolate cake, shchi, cut open peaches, cut round bread, bowl with sweet bread cakes, three small buns, full breasted chicken in aluminium foil. Lily is looking over the table edge, grinning with the aim of stealing the cake.

There are plants around, a winter garden. In some places a green color overtakes the snow with grass growing. All over the yellow fence, to the left side, are huge clumps of winter jasmine.

To the horizon trees in blue-green shades with snow coverings are seen, closer and then farther and farther away. In that distance the silhouettes of Jimothan smiling and waving to Trencil, while dragging Parsley through the snow behind him are seen. Trencil stands and smiles, a little of his towering purple castle with red highlights, many turrets, visible.

Carlas doing some gay shit. Pabit+Putunia about to start a small localized natural disaster. I mean how else do u make hot choco without setting chocolate on fire tbh. Hotted chocolate. aNd YeS mY fAmIlY SeLf iNsErTs ArE ThErE tOo >:3. The machine will explode tommorow but its OK. They can make bath bombs from the carnage. Hrhggh I had a different idea but then my sis changed my HC so Im just gonna say Habit built it but with Trevors help hence the flashiness nd DEVIL MODE. Now that ive watched hlvrai i cant stop dropping references this series is so quotable . Sawww those guys in the back? Honestly Trencils probably a winter person with the low light, fog and blocked sun.

EDIT: Shortened the rlly long ID, but if someone wants to know the plants i drew under ‘winter garden’; The flowers and plants visible at front are virginia rose, red chokeberry, snowdrops, a single frost covered rose, piers japonica in pots. To the middle inkberry, more snowdrops, colored hellebores patch, glory of snow, black hellebores patch, pansies, cyclamens, yellow aconite, some more snowdrops. A little farther are two winterberry plants, a camellia tree, witch hazel, english primroses, staghorn sumac.

Finally, the queen of Arnes, Emira Maresh! The temptation to draw her frowning in distaste was overwhelming, but no matter how much her parenting makes me mad, I refuse to make her attitude any more obvious than it was in the first book book. I’ll be honest, she’s probably my least favorite character in the series (that wasn’t specifically an minor antagonist; she’s still better than Fletcher), so there’s not going to be half as many headcanons/design notes as there was for Maxim or the Danes, but I still have a few thoughts I’ve listed below. Next up, Ojka! (I think; I may do Vortalis first).

Warnings for minor Steel Prince spoilers! All other refs can be found on my page under #adsom ref.

- Design stuff first. Fun fact, Emira’s color palette is actually a mixture of Maxim’s and Rhy’s/Kell’s! Gotta have that matching family color scheme. The patterns on her clothes are also inspired by the double-triangle chalice of the Maresh symbol, to help compliment the sun symbolism found in Maxim’s design.

- I wanted her to look both regal and gentle while also suggesting that she’s a bit more closed-off, so her clothes expose her shoulders and chest while almost completely covering her arms, back, and hands. I’m not sure if it helps, but it looks nice at least.

- Unlike the other members of her family, Emira has some blue accessories to add a little bit of pop to her design (Rhy also has a tiny speck of it in the friendship earring he shares with Alucard). This also serves as a callback to her icy magic.

- Now for personality stuff. While Maxim might have been able to repair his relationship with Kell if he had survived, Emira... not so much. She approaches the world in a once-bitten, twice-shy kind of way, which wouldn’t be too much of a problem if what she interpreted as “being bitten” wasn’t so incredibly small. Emira grew up in household that adhered to a very old Arnesian philosophy; magic is not actually benevolent, but fickle, and Antari magic is the most fickle of all. Though she never completely bought into this philosophy, it did affect her relationship with Kell; she still remembers legends from her childhood of wicked Antari, which, when supplemented with Maxim’s stories of Rowan and Holland’s threatening demeanor, led her to see all Antari as threats rather than human beings. She tried to suppress these fears when Kell was brought into her life- and it worked for a few years- but after she saw what he did to the Shadows through scrying one night, she began to treat Kell much more distantly. Emira was deeply concerned that she had brought a time bomb near Rhy, but the damage was done; the only thing she saw left to do was to subtly manipulate Kell throughout his childhood until he stood no chance of hurting any one of the royals, shaping his worldview until he would both kill and die for them while still acting as his mother. This worked, but it left her relationship with him on rocky ground (as well as royally messing up how the Maresh communicate as a family), and when the events of ADSOM rolled around, she couldn’t handle it and completely severed the connection. It was only during ACOL that she started to try and rebuild it, but it was more a move of desperation than one of love or affection.

- To everyone that doesn’t have a magic black eye, Emira is a completely different person. She’s wonderfully sweet and a wise queen, even if she falls a bit more on the anxious side of things, and she’s by far the calmest (on the outside anyway) of the Maresh. Her presence in Maxim’s life serves as an anchor to help him stay grounded; without her, he’d be much more paranoid and prone to anxiety attacks.

- Emira is responsible for Arnes’ finances, as Maxim is a bit of a spend-a-holic who buys unnecessary decor/metal stuff at every opportunity; if left to his own devices, he’d probably bankrupt the kingdom.

- If she feels cornered, Emira’s main weapon is manipulation through shunning someone. She knows her family loves her, and she isn’t afraid to wield her presence like a weapon if she needs to. Though Kell obviously gets the brunt of this, she has used this tactic on Maxim and Rhy before (she doesn’t like to do it to them though- she’d much rather shut the conversation down or try to talk it out with them). If she needs an actual weapon, she uses her magic to form ice spears and pikes.

- She spent the nights of the first two weeks after Rhy’s kidnapping in the hallway outside his rooms, ready to kill anything that tried to hurt her son.

- Her hobbies include gardening and (in her youth) dance. She tried to get Kell into the latter when he was younger; though he never developed a real appreciation for it, it did help with his agility in combat in the later years of his life.

Honestly, as much as I dislike her, I think Emira is a fascinating and extremely well-written character. That being said, if I could save one character from the events of ACOL, it probably wouldn’t be her. Thanks for reading!
