What to Expect Coming Up
I am still sick, but thought it’d be fun to mention all the projects I have going on and my sort of process.
I’ve gotten into the flow of 3 art -> animate an hour -> 3 art -> reference sheet; and repeat! Now the “3 art” doesn’t include warm-ups, which I’ll discuss in a moment. This usually varies but does have a pattern of priority to it.
Commissions (none atm, but one has discussed interest) -> Deadline art (contest entries, featured character, birthday gifts) -> “Required” art (raffle prizes [2 remain], Benrey project, 11 Bulbasaur gifts, 42 late Artfight attacks) -> Other stuff
When it comes to warm-ups, I’ve gone 32 times in a row of purely HLVRAI. It’ll still be thrown in the mix, but I’d like to add Pokemon and OCs as a chance too! Warm-ups include any requests I get, and those increase in chance the longer they’re there. Meanwhile there’s still the chance my random wheel will choose something like “Sunkist” three days in a row lol.
Now to discuss all the projects! First off, my next three art will be: raffle prize, a small special RTVS animation, and a doodle of my next hyperfixation which I’ll then open up for requests as well!
HLVRAI
“Cabinet Man” Animatic: A more long-term project that’s fully storyboarded so far, but I plan on making rendered (or at least colored) illustrations for.
I have two parts in my Multi-Animator-Project! One part is Benrey and Gordon focused, while the other part is Tommy, Bubby, and Coomer focused, so I get to animate the whole Science Team and that excites me!! (One part still open by the way, hint hint.) The MAP itself is a third of the way complete let’s goooooo!
Other animation projects include: “Two Birds” Tommy and Benrey friendship animatic (fully written), “Eighth Wonder” Tommy animatic (just an idea, focusing on the others first), and occasional clips or mini animations.
Benrey Fanart (and then the other characters too!): I have 12 people left to reach out to, but I gotta do it slowly so my account doesn’t get shadowbanned again (that was scary ngl). But once I do, the sign-up post will be updated regularly as I work and I’ll DM everyone individually as I finish theirs!
@sweetvoicecafe ! I am very excited to get this up and running! I have 3 references remaining, and then I can work on the introductory comic. (I mayyyyyyyy call for voice actors.)
HLVRAI-based OCs: This is a more minor thing, but I want to finish 9 more designs before Artfight, as I’ve only finished Joshie.
Pokemon
It’ll be a while longer until it’s ready, but I’d like to restart my Shiny Living Dex Challenge. And it’ll no longer be discord only, I’ll extend it to tumblr as well! Especially since there’s art prizes involved.
I have 11 remaining Bulbasaur/Ivysaur/Venusaur gifts to finish!

Misc.
Streams: Over on my Twitch (same name): I stream weekly (maybe more, depending on my new work schedule, just finished moving after all). At the moment, I’m taking turns with Half Life (nearly done with game one) and Omori (collab with Doglord15). Soon it’ll (hopefully) include Pokemon, but I’d also like to try Undertale Yellow, Portal, Hollow Knight, and more! As well as a return to art streams, that’d be cool.
Artfight Prep: I am mostly done, but remaining I have: 3 SVC refs, 9 HLVRAI OC refs, and fully updating my spreadsheet, which will also be updated on tumblr! (I may do this today, as it’s something I can do while bed-ridden.) Plus the 42 leftover revenges.
Among Us “Bark Bark” Animatic: nearly 3 years in the works but it’s chugging . . . there were complications with the cameos involved that hurt my motivation and the progress, but it’s still in the works haha…
“Haunted House” Vent Animatic: This is 2/3s of the way complete! As it’s something personal, I worked on it quickly after a certain event, but I’d still like to finish it. <3
New Hyperfixation: Surprise reveal! It’s Wreck-It Ralph (and specifically Hero’s Cuties). It won’t be a huge thing, but I’d like to doodle here and there, open requests for it, and draw up three AU designs that have been in my mind for nearly 13 years.
@theairshipexperiment : Yes yes, I knowwwwwwwwwwwww y’all are mad at me. It’s been three years and I still get people upset that it hasn’t continued. It’s not completely canceled, just very very slowww. I’m nearly done writing chapter 3, but that means there’s 7 chapters to go. At least I’ve started giving myself completely random reminders for times to write haha. It’s my only writing project atm, but writing takes so much more effort from me than art, I’m sorry.
@absurdamongus : Very low on my list, but I still enjoy their designs and would one day like to continue finishing their refs and maybe reopen an ask blog. An animated series would still be cool, but it’d be a long way off if so.
So yeah, a lot of projects and a lot of excitement! I’m going at a fair pace (when I’m not sick) and art continues to be my passion! <3

Cosplay Diary -- [Intro to costumes!]
Eight (Splatoon)
Shoes: Black Heels fitted with insoles to account for me never wearing heels. I've purchased two black zippers and some grommits to add superficially for the sake of design matching. (Who has a front facing shoe zipper??)
Leggings: Eight doesn't canonically have leggings, but I'm hoping to do some for the costume, translucent ones splattered with ink/paint! I've got leggings, I've got paint, but I haven't painted anything yet
Skirt: I've pinned it in further with safety pins to get a tighter fit, and plan on sewing over the fold I've made to adjust the fit (if it'll fit under my machine...). I'd also like to hem it slightly, since Eight's skirt is pretty short.
Jacket: Bit big on me, and the zips too centered, but it works. Need to cut off the sleeve and cut and hem the bottom edge without murdering the existing zipper.
Wig: So I've never done a tentacle wig before, but my plan is simple. I will construct 4 plush tentacles to be mounted onto an old baseball cap I found and will chop the brim off of. (That's what the bedsheets are for)
Notes: Lots to do on Eight, but a lot of the planning is done so it's mainly getting to sit down and do it. My next step is to sew the skirt and finish it up, then work on the jacket, then wig. I've done a prototype tentacle for the wig and it went well, so I'll be making another with the proper fabrics, to check sizing, then get started on that.
Dot (Pokemon)
Slippers: Managed to get those today! I'll be adding the decorative stuff to make them snorlax themed, and hopefully adding a band around the back as well.
Sweatpants: A wonderful find at the thrift store! (Actually, everything here is from the thrift store for the most part. The slippers, and leggings are the only exceptions, from a walmart and dollar store respectively.)
Tank Top: I love thrift store.
Cardigan: The real meat of this costume, an entirely handknit cardigan. while the pattern isn't perfectly Dots, please forgive me because I've never knit a cardigan before. Actually I've only ever knit scarves, and its been a few years. I've done all body panels and one sleeve, leaving only the second sleeve and the collar trim left for the body of the cardigan. I'd also like to add pockets. Dot's cardigan has a hood, which I won't be priotizing for now (mainly because i do not know how to do that and I'm short for time.), but i've got a pair of really fuzzy socks I plan on using to make the puff balls. I'll be giving them buttons, so they'll be able to be detatched for ease of washing. (Hopefully I can do the same for the tail?)
Wig: A dear friend has pledged to mail me a purple wig I'm hoping to use for this, we'll see if the post is good on getting it to me in time. the only thing I really still need to get for these costumes is the pink extensions I'll use for her highlights. I plan on doing her hair back style (because I need. to see.), and have a hairband. I'll probably use glue and hairspray to make flicked back hair I can then clip in and secure to the base wig for the bangs.... That's the plan anyway.
Notes: A lot closer to finished with Dot, big thanks to prexisting clothes from thrift stores. Which is great because I don't wanna make normal sweatpants n tank tops and things! Cardigan knitting has been going well, and I hope to finish the second sleeve Soon. It's been a long while knitting this, but I'm nearly there! Not super experienced with wig work, but hey this cosplays for fun not a contest so I don't wanna sweat it too much.
Feelings pretty good about things right now! If progress is made faster than expected, I might do a third costume, but we'll see. Haven't figured out which I'm wearing what day yet...

Haven't played the vidya since being a teenager but getting a family Switch for Christmas, top new and classic recs for kids (7 years old), family, couples (casual!), and me whose favorite was always Zelda games?
Ooh, I am delighted by the opportunity to put a vast and largely-useless body of knowledge to work. One set of game recs, coming right up:
For the kids:
Picking out games for kids 7 and under is tricky, because kids tend to be bad at video games at first. I don't know what kind of experience your kids have (is this their first game console? have they played a lot of games on computers or mobile devices before?), but I'll assume they're fairly green.
My top rec is going to be New Pokémon Snap, for a lot of reasons.
First, it's pretty easy to control. Each course is mostly on-rails, with the player inside an autopiloted vehicle that moves forward and navigates the course by itself. The player only has to worry about controlling the camera, which can help acclimate a kid without much experience with joystick controls to the idea.
Second, which may or may not matter to you, it's nonviolent. Sometimes the wild pokemon will get in altercations with each other, but the player never gets attacked. Super G-rated squeaky-clean.
Third, the courses are fairly short- they range from 5 to 10 minutes long, and have decisive and natural stopping points at the end. If you're planning to have any rules or restrictions on playtime, or need to regulate whose turn it is with the Switch, this is a godsend. (As a parent who's introducing a video game console to a household with multiple children, you will presumably need to be ready for trouble with sharing and appreciate any assistance the game can provide.)
Lastly- the original Pokémon Snap for N64 was my first videogame, which I got when I was 5, and I am biased would love to share that experience with a new generation.
After that... any Kirby game is probably a good option. Those games are actively made for little kids, being very easy and designed to acclimate new players to controls and concepts ubiquitous in other games. Kirby Star Allies I haven't personally played, but it's well-reviewed, looks like every other Kirby game I've played, and has 4-player local co-op- it's a pretty safe bet.
There's a couple mainline Pokémon games on the Switch, too- Pokémon as a series is pretty good for kids, thanks to the turn-based battle system with deep but approachable mechanics. Sword and Shield (one of the two, they're basically identical, Nintendo still haven't given up on that two-versions sales gimmick) aren't my favorite entries in the series but the baseline is pretty high. (There's also Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl, which I haven't really looked at, which might be simpler and better for kids?) Turn-based battles are good for kids who maybe don't have the kind of reflexes or hand-eye coordination for real-time combat systems yet.
Another angle on that- it doesn't matter if kids are kind of bad at video games if their opponent is on the same level, so there's PvP type games like Super Smash Bros Ultimate or Mario Kart 8 Deluxe which, although pretty difficult and skill-intensive against CPU opponents, have simple enough basic controls that they'll be fun for the two of them going at each other, not worrying about all the advanced stuff.
For family:
I assume you mean, like, for the whole family to play together? Kirby, Smash Bros, and Mario Kart all fit that bill, for sure.
There's also Snipperclips, which is this adorable little physics puzzle-platformer where you play as... these two little walking archway-shaped thingies, except they can overlap their bodies with each other and clip each other into different shapes, which they can then use to solve puzzles. It's only two-player co-op, but it's a good one for parents to play with kids.
Also I hear Ring Fit Adventure is good, though I haven't tried it myself- it's a motion-controlled workout game that requires a peripheral device, except the exercises and stuff you do with the ring are, like, the way you attack and cast spells and defend yourself in a turn-based RPG. I don't think it's co-op at all but it's not a bad one to have around if you want to tire someone out before bed keep the kids active and healthy.
For couples:
This one's tricky, since I do not know your wife or her taste in video games, but- any of the aforementioned multiplayer family games work fine in two-player.
The game that always comes up when people talk about games for couples is It Takes Two, which is a mandatory two-player co-op game about... two terrible neglectful parents going through a messy divorce, who- when their daughter wishes on a magic book for them to stay together- get shrunk down to the size of toys and have to go on a wild Honey I Shrunk The Kids-style adventure through the house to get back to normal. By all accounts it's beautiful, extremely well-designed, and fun- but features a lot of very weird, dark, and questionable writing decisions which make it... probably not something to play around the kids. They announced literally today that it'd be getting a Switch release on November 4th.
Oh, but- hey, you haven't played any videogames since you were a teenager, so you probably haven't already experienced...
Portal 2- included in the Portal Companion Collection on Switch- has a fantastic co-op mode. I'm sure you've heard of Portal via all the memes about the cake being a lie, but there's a reason it's so beloved and influential. Basic premise is- you have a gun that shoots portals, and you have to use it to solve physics puzzles while a passive-aggressive robot heckles and/or threatens you over the PA system. Portal 2's co-op mode is continuity-free, available from the start, and features two players each with their own set of portals, which makes for some pretty mind-blowing puzzles. (And the single-player of both games is more than worthwhile, too.)
For you:
Alright, so recommending games for people I don't know is challenging, but for someone I do know but whose taste in video games I don't, that's a horse of a different color. Just starting from what you've given me here- that you liked Zelda growing up- the obvious rec is Breath of the Wild.
Pretty much everyone besides the Ocarina of Time GOAT holdouts agrees that BotW is the best Zelda yet, though it's very different from the earlier games in the series- it's totally open-world, and does a lot with physics toys like bombs and a magnet beam and stuff. It's huge, there's tons to discover, and so much of it is designed to be open-ended and allow for multiple solutions without making puzzles trivial. It's just really impressive on a design level, and there's so much of it.
Zelda games are a lot of things to a lot of people, though, so it's hard to say what the active ingredient was for you back then without more info. If it was about the exploration, then yeah, BotW will scratch that itch for sure. The puzzle-solving stuff, BotW also has plenty of (albeit in these scattered, self-contained mini-dungeons instead of huge expansive temples.)
If you were more into the feel of the progression, getting new items that gradually expand your options and open up more of the world, I'd actually look at Hollow Knight- a pretty-difficult 2D metroidvania-type platformer with a lot of Zelda DNA, where you play as a little bug with a nail in a world full of other, mostly larger and scarier bugs.
But what are the best ones?
Outside of those specific criteria you gave me, there's a few Switch games that are a) too advanced for seven-year-olds, b) not multiplayer, and c) nothing like Zelda. But I'd be remiss if I didn't recommend them anyway, because they real good.
The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is the latest in the Ace Attorney series- and a reboot in a new continuity, so IMO it's the best jumping-on point. (The original trilogy is also on switch, but... this one's just better.) AA is a franchise of detective games where you play as a lawyer trying to get defendants acquitted of crimes they didn't commit, and so you've got to figure out what really happened by investigating crime scenes, cross-examining witnesses, and pointing out contradictions. TGAAC takes the series to early 20th-century London and gets Sherlock Holmes Herlock Sholmes involved, and it's just wildly entertaining from start to finish.
I remember mentioning Return of the Obra Dinn when you were looking for games for that volition study you were planning (did that end up happening?), but it's on Switch and I'd recommend it just to enjoy for yourself- you play as an insurance investigator whose job is to figure out exactly how everyone on a boat died, in order to figure out how much the insurance company has to pay out. You do so by finding corpses and then using a magic pocketwatch to go back in time to a frozen instant of the moment they died, inspecting the environment to figure out who's who and how they bit it from a limited number of snapshots of the incident. Really satisfying bit of deduction that'll consistently make you feel clever.
There's also a Pikmin game on Switch- Pikmin 3 Deluxe- which is a series I really enjoy. It's a... weird one to explain. You control a small squad of tiny astronauts who've crash-landed on an alien planet (not-so-secretly post-apocalyptic Earth), and are trying to reunite and repair their spaceship with the help of a small army of inexplicably-obedient ambulatory plant-creatures that decided to follow their orders. It's a weirdly compelling mix of time-management, action, strategy, puzzle-solving, and alternate-ecosystem worldbuilding. Not really comparable to anything else I've played, but really fun and fascinating. I'd recommend it for the kids if the controls weren't so weird and demanding of precision.
Also,
I don't recall if you played it when it came out for PC/Mac/Linux, but I have a game on there now! Partnered with a guy who does ports from the framework I built it in to bring it to Switch last month. It's this short little ~2 hour mystery thing, but people seem to like it and I'm pretty proud of it!
So yeah! There's probably some other good stuff I'm forgetting because I played them on other platforms, but hopefully this gives you some good options to pick from.

Hey everyone! In the wake of All That Mayhem we all just endured, it looks to me like its time for a LAB UPDATE!
Er... first of all a big thanks to @battlelegendsredandblue for taking the time to come out and help out the Glitch City Labs with their Weather Trio Torchic problem. There's a lot of water damage at the lab and a lot of cleanup to do, but it looks like things are turning around now that it isn't pouring rain.
That said HERE'S an update into everything else we have going on here.
First of all, the lab is welcoming a new slightly accidental addition to the team, Meet Rascal the 94!

It seems slightly etherial, and its bright golden plumage sports a bizzare pattern, that even in this presumably SAFE picture is still very hard to look at or focus on. The pokemon seems slightly ethereal, like it might have the ability to turn incorporeal if it wanted to.]
94 is a relative of the Missingno family. Like the common Missingno it has the ability to effect items that are near it when its stressed or curious, but UNLIKE Missingno, instead of duplicating items it transmutes them instead! For example, this persim berry used to be a DexNav!c
Fascinating! And Expensive!
Another interesting facet of 94 is their coloration. You might not be able to tell from the photo, but the plumage of a 94 is constantly shifting, and tends to change based on its mood, whether or not its stressed, and sometimes depending on whatever opponent it is facing in battle. Some of these patterns can produce a potent visual toxin when viewed from behind, so it is recommended to train it while using goggles.
It isn't lethal, but it DOES feel like getting poked in the eyes, and I can confirm it is NOT very pleasant.
This pokemon also has a great deal of volatile energy, and needs to be consistently trained in order to make sure it doesn't cause a surge. I have successfully trained it out of this tendency once so far, but it will have to be done several times in order to ensure it doesn't try to pick up the habit again.
Rascal will be a tentative member of my team for now. I am working on acclimating it to the other lab members and its new surroundings. Luckily Pidgey (which are for some reason a pokemon it tends to consider a major threat) are not very common in this region, so acclimation is going smoothly so far.
MOVING ON I'm sure what you're all interested to hear about is the status of the Many Torchic Eggs that were delivered to the lab over the course of the last few days. Here is their status so far

So far these three eggs have not hatched yet. The first two were recieved more recently and have yet to complete their egg cycles, while the third just seems to have taken a longer time to hatch.
In the mean time, as for the ones that HAVE hatched

It has a bizarre green, red and beige pattern to it, that makes it look almost like it has simply loaded in the wrong color pallet. Its collision with the table also doesn't seem to be quite right, as it seems to be slightly clipping into the table. The third is a bright blue torchic, that, while it doesn't appear to be aquatic, it does seem to be emitting a few embers of a bright blue flame. The fourth is a scaly, fish like Torchic that appears to have fins in the place of wings. And the fifth is bright pink and levitating with a long, lithe tail curled slightly beneath it.]
We were incredibly relieved to find that the blue egg simply contained a blue torchic and not another Kyogre Torchic or something of the like. It does have a strangely blue tinged flame, but otherwise it seems mostly like a normal torchic.
The Glitched Torchic we've determined is very similar to an unhatched torchic being accessed via temporal manipulation. It can interact with the world, but it tends to pass through things or clip into things as if it isn't sure they are there yet. Raising this one is likely going to be a challenge and as such it will be staying at the lab.
The aquatic one is very similar to the one born at Glitch City's lab. Air breathing, but able to hold its breath for long periods of time and highly acclimated to living in the water. It retains its typing as a fire/water type here in Hoenn.
The final one though is the one that concerns me the most. As you can probably see, it seems to bare a very close resemblance to the Kanto mythical pokemon Mew. Upon hatching it actually disappeared for a time, but it's reappeared now and keeps... floating and staring at me. Like it's trying to read my mind.
It's a little unnerving...
Anyway this is becoming an incredibly long lab update! I'll update you all about the Espurr eggs once they are hatched. We've recieved quite a few both at the lab, and a few had to be retrieved from the Glitch City labs for safety reasons. For more safety reasons these will NOT be kept here at the lab. I've made a few contacts already with some potential adoptees once we've determined the hatched pokemon are healthy.
These pokemon will be hatched off site.

i truly get you </3 hope you get will to read soon <333 it's not a solution but i try to read even just 2 pages whenever i feel like my reading block is out. been reading a book like this since feb djsjsksk ( finally at last few chapters lmao ) i just tell myself slow reading is a thing and don't think too much of it.

last two days were definitely the second highlight of this year after bss album for me. it's been so long since i got to be in the whole cb fanfare with anticipating teasers till cb day checking out the music. ( i still have to sit down and listen to the album with lyrics. i first listened to album then read all lyrics next day jsdkks haven't gotten time to both together yet ) i really liked everything about this cb and i love that for me. saur excited for the fml mv too. also today is woodz comeback i'm excited about that too it's been long since i heard new music from him

So wow. This went from shooting a shot to talk to an old friend, to a weird sex dream about him, to talking further, realizing that there were unchecked feelings, to literally what would count as long distance 3rd base in like idk, two months.
Holy shit. Why was i worried about this?
Like, this started as me saying “Yeah, I’ll give you a chance once I’m back in the hometown and such.” to me literally exchanging pics with him within weeks. There’s a certain way he responds to any of them and just has a such a way with damn words that it just feels like I cannot wait for this to actually happen.
And now, this may be TMI, but with the first pic i got from him, I cannot fathom that this was his literal first time doing it. Something about the way he managed to take it was just at just the right angle that I automatically let my horny thoughts take control of that whole damn thing. I’m sorry, but literally no dick pic has ever done that for me. Like none. But that? Goddamn. Helps him out a lot that he’s got a very nice one there. Which again, caught me so fucking off guard.
And there’s even me giving him the flat out warnings that i do not keep hair under control ever due to sensitive skin and i straight get told that it looks better there. Not even going to be one who’ll beat around the bush to say that i should trim or anything, no. He flat out likes me fully natural better.
It’s been a while since a guy could literally get me like THIS. And even better have the emotional connection outside of this. He’s just checking off every single one of my boxes after I was just giving him the benefit of the doubt.

And I’m just here wondering how the Fuck I’d be his first.

Hell, we still play pokemon together and it ends up with us literally crying laughing because i managed to clip him entirely out of existence for the third time. Thank you Union Rooms in Scarlet for literally being the perfect way to hang out while on the phone.
Memories of him are being mean to me though. Like, i swear i remember enjoying him being around back then, but the skittish nervousness and annoying everything was definitely there. But now, I can listen to his voice forever even though i swear i remember not liking it. But then again, it’s been a long time and it’s deepened in just the right way.
He’s still a bit nervous though, but it’s not even in a bad way. Honestly, more cute than anything else. Just not very bold, which doesn’t even hinder him at all.
Yeah. So, i said i was in too deep a couple weeks ago. Yeah, no, that has nothing on now. It’s not just wanting to cuddle him and show him the world, which is still absolutely the plan, but flat out making him the main one. That’s not going to be yet another random FWB or something, no, I want this to be a real relationship. He broke the damn barrier. The demiromanticism doesn’t matter anymore, because he has reached the demi qualification and even without being around me physically.
Looks like I’ve got a basically boyfriend now.
This will be an interesting conversation to have with the ex and the one FWB.
Like yeah, i just up an messaged an old friend i haven’t seen in years, reconnected, and now we’re dating, so.
How’d it happen so suddenly? Well, it did. And I’m happy with this one.
I haven’t felt this happy since i was first getting with my ex, we still talk, we’re still friends, but my god did everything just slowly die out. We had literally told each other than FWB would definitely be the option when in person again, but honestly, I may just leave him without benefits. He’s a good friend.
The other one though. I hope this doesn’t mess up plans to become roommates. I mean, she’s got her whole polycule. She’ll be fine. Sure, i won’t be the main one like i was originally talking myself up to. Might not even be one. I was curious about polyamory, but honestly, i think i want this to be just me and him. At least for now. If it starts fading out like it did with my ex, then maybe I’ll bring it up. The fading out part hurts a little, but at least i don’t lose a person in my life with it.
And well, the best thing about all this happening, is that it’s the extra push to get my own shit done. I finally have appointments at the DMV made and shit getting done. I WANT To Be Back Home Already. Hell, this might be like April that I’ll be down there. I just want to be around my people again and there’s this fantastic bonus. And you know, having it be months before my original limit because of the money reasons.
Hopefully this isn’t one that my mom looks at and just says the most off-handed thing about. Like with my ex, “I can’t believe you’re dating someone that... big.” Well, this is a skinny fucker who’s relatively attractive. And due to his odd allergies and such, I think she’ll approve of the random diet I’ll put myself on, which is just avoiding dairy like I should’ve done forever ago, but this time it’s because i want to make out with the guy and not fucking kill him. I have a feeling she’ll actually like this one for once. And that has literally never happened before. Not for the right reasons, given, but you know, that’s a guaranteed approval i think. Soft, kind, and polite, and the odd bonus of her not judging me for going for a big guy again (not to say it was a bad thing, I do have a weird preference here, but I’m going against it for this one. Too many things that I don’t want to look over. Either way, he’s perfectly fine.)
He needs to stop being so perfect so early. I hope this stays just as in my head once I’m around him.
I hope this doesn’t fuck up because right about now, it’s sounding perfect.

Current review of Pokemon Violet
Oh boy the graphics are not worth £50
Depending on the terrain and size of a pokemon the camera clips into the ground (I've seen this multiple times)
I hadn't even been prompted the find the legendary (mitochondria or whatever it's name is) when I found a shiny hoppip
It was the third pokemon (not including starter) that I caught
Speaking of catching pokemon how did I deal with this method?
I have to: go up to a pokemon, interact with it, try and catch it, when I do it gives me a whole screen to remind me that I got a new pokemon
At least unlike swsh I don't get teleported to a different dimention
Anyway during one of the fades to black in the intro cutscene you can briefly see the characters t-pose which I found hilarious when I first saw it (does scarlet have this?)
The game itself is pretty fun though
Unfortunatly sprigatito does not remain upon four legs
Gamefreak have seemed to learn that a good middle evolution to ease in the design of the final evolution is a good idea
As soon as I saw floragato I knew that there's going to be a lot of porn of it
Wooper is very pog and we have a new evolution instead of quagsire (which I am a little sad about but quagsire isn't going to disappear)
Actually based off the level wooper evolved at (around 16) the new evolution might be a middle stage

AMPHIBIA: SEASON 2B TRAILER BREAKDOWN
NEW AMPHIBIA EPISODES!! (Trailer spoilers and speculation! DUH!)
Y’all have NO CLUE how excited I am!! After that huge mid season finale drop, Amphibia fans all around have been waiting for the second half of the season! I did a Speculation post based on the episode titles, and another one based off of the episode loglines for the March drop!
Check them out, cause I will be referencing them as we go!! I’m first gonna do a scene by scene breakdown, then I’m gonna see if my predictions were right, or wrong. So many theories!!! I will also be mentioning the episode titles Matt released in the AmphibiaDirect, so if you don’t want to know, leave now!

00:00–00:21: Completely old information and clips from Season 2A that we’ve all seen before with the music box and Sasha-Angst. One thing I did not expect was that this trailer would be so Sasha heavy. I expected her to kinda fade into the background and we’d focus a lot more on the temples, so this makes me have theories I may not have had before.
00:22–00:26: Marcy’s new bird (as teased in the Amphibia-Big City Greens promo). We have two shots with them, one where they are flying down with only a bunch of books that would last a lifetime, or a few minutes with Marcy. The second shot is them flying in the air with Anne and Marcy riding through the sky. I am trying my absolute hardest to not hope for gay then to be disappointed, but c’mon!!! Has no one seen How to Train Your Dragon?!!?!? But Hop Pop is being held in the second shot by the Bird’s talons so I think this is a little more Marcy and Wartwood kind of situation. Maybe somewhere around “Ivy on the Run” with Marcy and her bird being the B Plot.
00:27–00:31: The First Temple. We know from the colours and the shape from the book that it is the First Temple. It seems to have water flowing out of Frog statues’ mouths, and on the temple’s walls there are imagery of brains and a vague Newt Shape reading a book! Definitely talking about wit here! Even all the mushrooms are green, and we know how much Amphibia loves to use colour.
00:31–00:33: The Second Temple! We don’t actually see the Temple, just the archway leading to the Temple. Marcy seems to have the charged green gem on the music box, which is pointing them in the direction of the Temple, very Onyx Equinox-esque.
00:34–00:36: The entrance to the Third Temple. Lava pouring everywhere and pink statues of buff Amphibians? Definitely Sasha, no questions asked. I have no other thoughts about this shot other than the jagged rocks atop of the cave, seems like it could collapse in on itself and cause people to get hurt.
00:36–00:37: Ivy and Sprig jumping on treetops, I think this is from “Ivy on the Run” where Ivy is running from her mother’s strict rules, and Sprig is trying to talk her out of it. They’re so cute! It makes me wanna hold onto them and never let go.
00:38–00:39: Bessie jumping over a ravine with Sprig and Polly at the reins, which is from “Night Riders”, the first episode we’re seeing this Saturday!
00:39–00:40: A First Temple Puzzle where you have to solve a cube to enter the next stage. Seems like Marcy is in “her own little bubble” (heh. sorry i had to) and as she’s solving the cube, the room also moves on its own, with the Plantars being shifted to another side. Kinda like Wulfric’s gym in Pokemon X and Y. This sets interesting character work for Marcy, since she’s known to have issues with connections, but she’s so into knowledge and smartness that she may not realise the issues she’s causing to the people around her.
00:40–00:41: MADDIEEEEEE!!!! Definitely from “Maddie and Marcy”. I feel like they would get together and Marcy would be so into learning about Maddie and creepy magic that they will form a bond. This is how nerds make friends everyone, they find something the other is SUPER invested in and they learn about it. Either that or an extrovert claims them both, and they know each other via association.
00:42–00:43: Giant chicken bat for “Return to Wartwood”. Don’t ask me how I know, I just do. Seems like the Plantars set up a banquet for them, and they’re running away. So shenanigans!
00:44–00:45: Okay, so I initially thought Sasha’s next episode was gonna be in episode 16 (”Toad to Redemption/Barrel’s Warhammer”) and I initially thought that it would be Toad to Redemption, because y’know... Toads. But with Sasha’s pink powers shown in her using that giant warhammer, I think it’s going to be either one of the two, but Sasha is definitely showing up in 216. They don’t seem to be on a train, but the Earth is moving very fast for some reason.
00:45–00:46: The Newt Lady from the Bizarre Bazaar seems to be activating the tippity-top of the Second Temple, with Anne near her. The position of this is high above the clouds, and there is a blue glow coming from the writings/symbols on the ground. Perhaps this is the charging method for the gems on the box.
00:47–00:48: More First Temple stuff! Writing’s on the wall (man these visual puns just write themselves y’know!) and they are in the inside of the temple. Interestingly enough, the main floor is green like the rest of the temple, but the other side (puzzles) seems to have red and blue squares, perhaps representing the heart and strength (blue and pink) which is what the wit lacks.
00:49: The Newt Lady from the Bizarre Bazaar opens a Scroll with the Music box, the three gems (which seemingly came before the box) and three people in coats almost praying to it. This is definitely “After the Rain” with the story of the Music Box being revealed. Cause we still have no idea what “After the Rain” is gonna be about.
00:50: GENERAL YUNNAN!! Scourge of the Sand Wars! Defeater of Ragnar the Wretched! The youngest Newt to ever be named General in the GREAT NEWTOPIAN ARMY!! (Can you tell I stan her? because I stan her.)
Anyways, she seems to be in the first temple or King Andrias’ throne room. I’m mainly assuming this because the temple because the building is blue or because the spires from King Andrias’ throne room are in the way back there, but there are several Toads there defeated on the ground. Either these were people to protect Marcy at the Temple, or this is an episode where all of Grimes’ command are trying to take over Newtopia under Sasha and Grimes’ command. Quite the plausible amount for theories and plot just from a one-second Yunnan shot.
00:51: A chess board with Frog knights shooting lasers at Marcy. Another one of the First Temple’s tricks, or it could be King Andrias’ plot, since we saw him with Chess pieces of Anne and Marcy at the end of “Marcy at the Gates”, so this clip could either be “The First Temple” or “True Colors” and either or are exciting!!
00:52-00:53: A mole comes out of the ground as Mayor Toadstool walks around seemingly trying to please Newtopian guards and soldiers. “Toad to Redemption” now makes complete sense! I called that it would either be Anne and Marcy helping a battle-hardened Toad, or it would be a Sasha episode. I think its the first part, where Newtopian inspectors are coming to suprise visit Mayor Toadstool and inspect if he’s doing a good job taking care of Wartwood, to no one’s surprise find out he’s embezzling money from the town. The episode would be Marcy and Anne helping Toadstool to become better so he doesn’t lose his job as Mayor.
00:53–00:58: We have three shots here, one of each of the girls. Anne looks back in the rain, almost distraught. This is definitely “After the Rain” and I’m not ready for the angst. Marcy is visibly frustrated over chess pieces, this is either a challenge from the Temple or she’s found out about Andrias’ plan. As much as Option 2 is interesting, I think the first one is more realistic. Sasha in the Third Temple, activating her Colour Power and breaking the ground underneath her to a circle. I am constantly terrified by and for Sasha.
00:58–1:00: Polly and Sprig’s silhouettes running in the rain. Also “After the Rain” but still nothing much to say here.
1:00–1:01: Giant tentacles grab Sprig and the Plantars. I have no idea what this is, but it also appeared in the “Night Riders/Return to Wartwood” trailer/promo, so I’m assuming it’s from that episode.
01:02: Sasha is facing off against a giant golem! Probably the Third Temple’s trial.
01:03: Newt Lady from the Bizarre Bazaar reveals the secrets of the Music Box. Definitely an “After the Rain” episode. I did not expect Marcy to be there though, that’s interesting now.
01:04–01:06: Two shots from the Third Temple. First one being Anne having a moment of realisation, and the other with the Golem roaring in front of Anne and Sasha. This freaked me out because wtf??? Sasha and Anne together?? Are they solving it together too??? Interaction equals resolution/conflict/character drama.
01:07–01:12 & 01:17–01:22: So how are we integrating baby Marshanne into this??? As for which episode, I have no idea! But some interesting details in this is that Sasha seems to have been the last out of the three to have joined. Since Anne and Marcy are together crying, while baby Sasha is one on the slide standing up (hehe) for them. Between the first clip and the second, Sasha has a bruise on her forehead, so she may have gotten hurt trying to protect them. They introduce each other and that’s the end of the clip. I’m assuming this is finale material, because otherwise I have no idea where this is coming from or going to.
01:13–01:16: Anne pulls the Plantars in for a hug. Still not sure where this is for, but it is a thing.
01:23–01:28: Two shots of Sasha and Anne, which seemed to have been slowed down to around half speed. Shot one has Anne standing, almost distraught wearing what seems to be Newtopian armour, with Sasha’s foot in the foreground. The second shot is Anne holding her sword at the top of the Newtopian Walls to Sasha who is weaponless and has her hands up in surrender. Smoke is rising from the land below, and Anne looks visibly angry. I have no idea what is happening, but this definitely has to be finale material.
A title card shows Amphibia returning 6th March!! Hype.
01:34–01:45: Of course we need happy stuff to counter ANGST! So we have a bizarre sequence of Frobo making a garden and growing flowers in a matter of seconds. Hop Pop is enthralled by this and welcomes him to the family, and Polly looks at him knowingly. This is a very big development played very casually, since we know nothing about the robot besides his goofy self being able to do this. Frobo is the most cryptic thing this season besides the King’s basement, we also have no information on Frobo so this is a striking change. This will take place in “Friend or Frobo?” and I am stupid hyped!!! I don’t know anything about Frobo and I want to know more!! Also Wartwood is on fire. It’s just a normal Tuesday everybody.
That ends the trailer breakdown!! But I did have some more general theories and thoughts I’ll include here.
Something I did want to mention before we started was the music in the beginning of the non-speaking part of the trailer. To me, it sounded like an epic reprise of John Legend’s “All of Me”, and I’m thinking there’s one of two things happening: one is that the finale song that we’re all crying to is “All of Me” by John Legend, like how Reunion’s was “Lean on Me” by Bill Withers; or, I’m just theorising like a mad person. Who knows!
Also another general observation is the puzzles and how we’ve been prepped for them by “Family Shrub” where each one has puzzles and riddles each person who fits a specific role must solve. Each girl with each of the Temples, and they need each one to deal with their own Temple. Meaning Sasha being at the Third Temple means some form of resolution/character interaction.
As for Sasha, I don’t know if she’s gonna be redeemed necessarily, but I think she might go to the good side and Marcy goes to the bad side. I don’t wanna believe that cause I love Marcy to death, but Season 2 finales are always horrifying before Season 3 finales wrap up nicely. So I’m expecting even more drama than the Season 1 finale. I want all the girls to be happy, and it’s not happening this season for sure. So much excitement!!!

Ooh, ooh. Please tell me all about TJ and how he turned the Caps into a buttsmack-loving, hansy, "babe"-ing team.
Ah, you are asking the NHL’s eternal question:

We can thank the tireless work of the league’s spanking expert, Timothy Lief Oshie (Keeway Gaaboo in Anishinaabemowin, or “TJ”, after a character in 1979’s The Champ, a sports movie that the New York Times once described as “unholy” and “these movies don't mean to deal with the world as it really is, but as it should be, a place where there's no pile-up of emotional garbage too big that it can't be washed clean by a good cry. My problem with 'The Champ' is that I didn't cry. The garbage accumulated."
Clips of the character TJ crying have been found to be “one of the most depressing movies” you can show somebody, and are used in psychological studies. His mom thought Oshie looked like child actor Ricky Schroder, though.)
He is best known as Osh-Babe, like a Pokemon, for the sound he makes.
TJ was born in Everett, Washington, but moved to his father’s hometown of Warroad, Minnesota when he was fifteen to train with his father (Coach Osh) and cousin (Olympian and Red Wings star Henry Boucha).
I have a duty to show hockey tumblr pictures of Coach Henry and Coach Henry’s mustache every year.
He is also cousins with Gary Sargent of the Minnesota North Stars and great-nephew of local legend Max Oshie, because Warroad is a town of 1,700 people who are all cousins and also all Olympians.
For new hockey fans: Warroad is called “Hockeytown USA” because the US men’s team has never won gold without a player from Warroad on the roster. The reason for this is that the town has three rinks (two indoor, one outdoor) and ice time is free. Apparently the only barrier is that sometimes people forget who has the town key to the rink and they have to jimmy the door.
Little TJ went from having to drive across the Washington/Canada border and paying $20 dollars per hour to skating every day of the year. The first thing Coach Henry did when TJ arrived was make him scrimmage against his local star player. They got so frustrated at not being able to beat each other that they sat down on the ice and burst into tears. The other player is now US Olympic, Boston Pride, and PWHPA star Gigi Marvin.
Anyway, TJ played college hockey, then for the Blues and for Team USA in the 2014 Sochi Olympics, where he became famous for being a statistical freak and loving his teammates very, very much.
Here he is haring off the ice and all the way down the hall to crush Vladimir Tarasenko after his first career hat trick. After crushing Tarasenko’s Team Russia in 2014, TJ stopped to comfort him.
I don’t have video of TJ’s involvement with Vladimir’s butt, but there were at least a few proto-smacks.
Anyway, that summer TJ was traded away to the Washington Capitals, and the spankings started.
Several people deserve credit for the Washington Capital’s complete lack of personal space before TJ arrived. The first, of course, are Alexander Ovechkin and Alexander Semin, who shared everything from their name through their bubblegum, clothes, and chairs.
The next is Nate Schmidt, who at the time was d-partnered with John Carlson. John Carlson once hugged Nate Schmidt so hard it felt “like getting hit by a linebacker” and “I really felt I was going to eat popcorn with the people in the third row….It was awesome.” Nate Schmidt decided to express his love by composing a Carly Dance, which he would perform for Carlson before every game.
Then backup goaltender Philipp Grubauer told Schmidt he worried Nate was making the Caps’ other senior defenseman, Matt Niskanen, feel less cherished. Together they created a Matty Duet, which they performed at Niskanen while, I assume, the rest of the team had to hold him down.
There was also Tom Wilson, who also hits people very hard. After his first season Alexander Ovechkin was so impressed with Wilson that he nicknamed him “Destroyer”. Tom Wilson I guess blushed and said “No, you!” because started calling Ovechkin “Destroyer” right back. It’s since been shortened to “D”, so if you’re listening to pregame or bench chatter and hear someone yelling that it means either of them.
Since his arrival, TJ has adopted and escalated Schmidt’s pregame dances into elaborate dance-handshakes.
First, and this isn’t directly relevant but it kind of is, TJ is a really big fan of electrotherapy and brought it with him from St. Louis. So before games he and John Carlson like to go into a dark training room and stick electrodes on each other. TJ especially likes putting them on his face.

(He uses an Accelerated Recovery Performance machine, or ARP, which is just a TENS unit you can get at CVS. I quite like TENS for pain and it can be very relaxing, so I think it does help him in that sense, but the company selling it as ARP for training purposes is some vintage 19th century snake oil. At one point TJ also stuck electrodes on long-suffering family dog Jay Beagle, who was gracious to his face but concluded, “I just don’t know if it actually works. I don’t like doing things that don’t help, you know what I mean?”)
Emerging from his electric dungeon, TJ has a unique dance-handshake with every member of the team. Each one is based on a joke or something he’s noticed about them, and they are expected to perform it with him in order before every game.
After that, they break out into secondary traditions as TJ supervises: Wilson and Ovechkin bodyslam and scream “D!” onto each other’s faces, during the playoffs John and Ovi square up and hit each other in the jock a ritual number of times, and so on.
...in retrospect maybe I should have pinned John Carlson for more of this, or at least that the Washington Capitals like it when John Carlson humiliates them physically. John Carlson now thinks he can demand his D-partners dance for him, much to Kempny’s confusion.
Anyway then they go out to the ice, where Kempny gamely tows TJ into position for Tom Wilson to whale on his ass and/or balls with his stick. The force and placement of blows vary depending how they’re feeling tonight. TJ returns the favor until they fall to the ice in fake or sometimes maybe not so fake agony.
When TJ recovers enough he’ll sneak over and steal a spank of the plushest and most precious hockey butt of all: goalie butt.
According to Lars Eller, “it’s little things we have fun with. We don’t do it for anybody else, but for us as a group…just a good way for us to start practice off with a laugh and smile.”

so i know youve talked a lot abt the differences in characterization between the pokeani dub and sub, which as someone also passionate abt localization is always super interesting to read! but do the differences extend to pokemon characterization as well? like are ash's pikachu and satoshi's pikachu as different as say james and kojiro? are the pokemons relationships w their trainers very different?
to some extent! most pokemon speak to humans (and watchers) with their body language, which is something that stays exactly the same in all dubs!
the pokemon that do change are the ones that utilize human speech, or are adept at mimicking it. mewtwo especially is a completely different character in the sub than it is in the dub--mewtwo strikes back is, famously, a VERY different movie depending on what language you watch it in.
granted, some pokemon might leave different impressions because of how they’re dubbed, so that could count? i remember being kinda shocked when i heard how pumpkaboo sounded in english--in japanese, she’s very softspoken and whispery, but she kinda just screams in english. a lot of pokemon that are quiet and cute in japanese are much louder/clumsier in english, like psyduck is another one that comes to mind.
i think the pokemon that lose the most are pokemon with pun names, which i have written extensively on. for example, in japanese sudowoodo is called usokkie, and it walks around saying ‘uso!’ a lot, which is actual japanese that means like ‘bullshit/no way/you’re lying.’ this is played a lot for laughs in the early episodes where it (and its baby counterpart, usohachi/bonsly) features, but no loss is greater than movie 21--where one character’s defining trait is that they’re a compulsive liar, and a sudowoodo ends up getting attached to him, following him around and constantly announcing to everyone in the vicinity that he’s full of shit.
none of this is in the dub of that movie, so you LOSE, surprisingly, a lot of really beautiful & poignant characterization. it’s not just a silly pun for sudowoodo & callahan, it’s part of what makes their partnership so romantic and destined, and it’s also part of what keeps callahan in check and makes him stop and realize what he’s doing. at one point in the movie there’s a part where he’s just loudly berating himself, calling himself useless and powerless, and sudowoodo is just pounding its branches on him and screaming ‘you’re lying, you’re lying, you’re lying!’ and its HEARTBREAKING and not in the dub because there’s no way they can dub that. the nuance is gone.
the pokemon i feel most passionately about, in all regards but here as well, is wobbuffet. wobbuffet hits every box. this ask is about to get longer. sorry.
wobbuffet has a character arc, one that is more noticeable in the sub than in the dub, with utmost respect to kayzie rogers who is the light of my life and the voice i hear when i need serotonin. i wrote more extensively on it here, but long story short: wobbuffet has the third most screentime of any pokemon in the whole anime, right after pikachu and meowth. when he first started out in the series, he was incredibly softspoken--his interruptions, even, were quiet ones. subtly, he started getting louder and louder. now, he screams every sentence. i blame this directly on Being Jessie’s Pokemon Disease, but the emotional side of it is that him and Jessie are soulmates and he came to her an uncomfortable little thing trying to make itself smaller, and it took a few weeks around her to realize fuck that, actually i’m going to shine bright too. Jessie’s flair is all over Wobbuffet, and it wasn’t always, and that’s the biggest character change he’s had in his time on the show. This is present in the dub if you squint, but it’s much more present in the sub.
wobbuffet also speaks an incredible amount of humanspeak not present in the dub. a lot of people know that pikachu has ‘words’ for things--the most widely recognized being that ‘pikapi’ is ‘satoshi’--but PLENTY of other pokemon speak in this manner too and don’t make it to the dub because unlike pikachu, their names change, and i doubt tpci cares enough to work with those changes and keep the poketerms.
wobbuffet, though, he doesn’t just take fragments of his name and align them to sound like japanese like how pikachu does--wobbuffet, or sonansu in this case, will literally like... break the boundaries of what he should be able to say in order to more closely mimic humanspeak. it has to be heard to be believed, but like, i have clips--
here, you can tell he’s saying ‘sososo’ for kojirou and ‘susoso’ for musashi, but he’s got this way of edging his voice so that you don’t register the vowels as what they really are. he’s shockingly close to actually saying the words kojirou & musashi clear as day, is just like there’s a Veil of Being a Pokemon over that. like he has an accent, but not much more.
the first time i noticed he knew & could verbalize his trainer’s name was in xy063, when he just short of sobs it out as she’s trying to release him. it sounds unlike anything he says on a day to day basis, it’s distinct.
he doesn’t just do this with names. i also have a clip of him just inexplicably shouting ‘HOME RUN’ in english if you want it.
all of this to me is like... really important shit about sonansu to me that is kinda lost in translation. to me, it speaks to his closeness with meowth--like you cannot convince me that the pokemon most adept at physically speaking humanspeak and the pokemon second most adept at physically speaking humanspeak being in close quarters is some kind of beautiful coincidence. like no. they’re friends. nyarth teaches sonansu words, or at the very least teaches him how to bully his own vocal chords into letting him say those words.
and going beyond those two points, wobbuffet is ALSO a pun mon!!!! so that’s a THIRD thing you lose with him. ‘sou nan’su’ means ‘that’s right!/thats how it is!’ so in the dub, the fact that he’s a gag character isn’t truly driven home--his disobedience in always releasing himself from his ball is because he’s agreeing with everything team rocket says. he wants to let them know they’re right. in the early days of his time on the show, this was always played for laughs
i don’t know how to end this post but wobbuffet is like a triple threat of lost characterization in the dub just because of the nature of how the dub worked. especially in the early days, the games got localized before the anime, and the anime just had to work with what they had--so the localizers saw wobbuffet and were just kinda like... eh, this is a cultural reference our american audience won’t get, let’s name him based on his gimmick. and they didn’t realize the hole they dug the dubbers into xD
nowadays, they try to avoid this with the anime in mind (inkay, audino, & indeedee are all punmons who keep their puns, and of course now the anime doesn’t utilize them =/) but wobbuffet will always be this like... horrible lost cause. there is SO much to his character that is lost in translation!!!! he’s agreeable and supportive, he’s really good at humanspeak (possibly because him and meowth are buddies), he’s really broken out of his shell!!! i can’t have these conversations with dub only people.
i’m sure there are a LOT of pokemon that fall under this umbrella, but as u can see, this is the one i care most about xD

One company recently used AI to make a horror movie trailer within 24 hours—based on trailers that the AI had already processed. Thirty days it would take to edit it manually. In Japan, an AI creative director analyzes client briefs before pitching.
Third, Content Is Becoming More Curated: Netflix and Amazon have been using curated content for many years, prompting and suggesting what shows we'd like to watch and what products we'd like to buy based on our past searches and history. These types of analytics target and creates instant audiences for new shows and products. In the past, producers needed to advertise to the general public. Now they can focus their time and money just on those more likely to enjoy what they make.
Four, Cord-Cutting Has Led To New Business Models: In the past, people need it to pay monthly subscriptions with hundreds of channels to get the two or three that they like through cable or satellite. New companies like Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, pay-per-view, and others had changed the traditional business model in which the film and entertainment contact used to be delivered. Users can now go online to find just the content they want, replacing traditional offerings with smaller bundles and specialty packages.
Five, Virtual And Mixed Reality Is Coming: Successes in virtual and mixed reality is starting to make its way into media and entertainment. Last summer, the Soccer Championships in Europe featured in 360 VR, immersing sports fans during live games, displaying the virtual reality's entertainment power. Also, the Pokemon Go craze come and go over the past 18 months. While this was just a little introduction to mixed reality capabilities, it indeed showed only how much interest people are in blended experiences on virtual and mixed reality,
Six, Advertising Is Getting Smarter: Due to computers and information systems' capabilities and software development, in-depth data-consumer analysis and strategies, machine learning, and the vast opportunities available with augmented virtual reality and Artificial Intelligence, marketers and advertisers are getting smarter than ever. The digital revolution in the digital media and entertainment industry is focusing mainly on marketing and money. Over the years, Sapphire has attempted all manner of confession: face-to-face under torrential rain, hand in hand standing before the possible end of the world, foolishly through Gold, a bit more gently through Crys, yelling mid-argument, and then, softly, when there is no one else around but them.
Likewise, Ruby has mastered all tactics of avoidance: pushing her off Pilo’s back, using imminent disaster as distraction, pretending not to hear her, feigning ignorance, keeping his big mouth shut for once .
She does not know when she grows out of this back and forth and stops trying. Maybe it is when she is sixteen or eighteen. She’s twenty-one now, and looking back at the last few years, her friendship with Ruby has improved. They still argue, but it’s less these days. (Emerald would be proud of ‘em, if he bothered to step out of his lab to notice.) Their fights are no longer about unrequited feelings or ten-year old love confessions. It’s more like: which way to go when they’ve gotten lost, or how her new clothes aren’t colour-coordinated, stuff that they can laugh about, stuff that can be either ‘right’ or ‘wrong’. You can’t really do that with feelings.
Part of why they fight less is because they talk less too. The Petalburg Gym is always expecting new challengers and she hasn’t had a break since she took over Norman three years ago. Having this job takes her mind off nagging thoughts, pushes her to keep training, adapting to new trainers and their partner pokemon visiting from regions she’s never had the luxury to travel to. On the rare afternoons she can afford to leave the gym early, she treks through the lush forests encircling the city, retracing the steps of her childhood backyard.
As she walks with Toro, she thinks about new strategies, designs for the gym, what she’ll have for dinner, and on days she passes by her old Secret Base—Ruby. Unlike the past, when the thought of him would make her scowl, now it is more often accompanied by a sigh, maybe a sheepish grin if she is in a good mood. It’s not just because she’s mellowed a bit since her anxious teenage days. It’s because he’d spent a lot of effort on the old Secret Base, dolling it up and even adding a tent with pillows inside for her in case she spent a night in the forest. “Though I’ll never understand why anyone would want to,” he’d sneer, as if begging to start another fight.
Now, he’s always in Lilycove judging those Pokemon Contests. But once a month, she’ll receive a parcel from him with something fancy to clip in her hair and this particular brand of Pokemon food that Toro and the rest like to eat. It’s shipped in from Kanto, and Lilycove is the cheapest place to get it. Usually Ruby includes a hurried note like “Mimi’s gotten even prettier” or “I found the perfect fabric today” or “I’ll visit soon”, though the third time she receives this particular sign off, Sapphire takes it with a grain of salt.
She hasn’t been to the old base in awhile, but today is special. She weaves through the twisty paths of the woods until the leaves open up to the entrance of the long abandoned Secret Base. The sound of dry leaves and twigs crunches under the soles of her boots. All the memories she and Ruby made here, it’d been before they got proper jobs and stopped hanging out, before they cleared out the entire base, before she gave up on him replying her confessions.
She remembers stumbling into the base after getting into a nasty fight with a group of territorial Mightyena, and how Ruby brandished a first aid kit and stitched the deepest cut up. And the other time, when he surprised her with a cake on her birthday and didn’t get too upset when she couldn’t resist smashing a slice into his face. And the time when they both fell asleep waiting for the rain to stop, and she dreamt that he’d touched her cheek and whispered something she couldn’t hear. And, the very first time they met—their 80-day bet. So many things changed in the span of those 80 days.
Sapphire double checks the date on her PokeNav. Ten years ago on this day, she swung from a vine and saved a helpless Ruby. Ten years ago, she reunited with the little, fierce boy who saved her when she’d been helpless.
In the middle of this tranquil forest, Sapphire shuts her eyes and feels the warm sunlight on her skin. How much has changed the past decade? She’s proven her worth as a gym leader, she’s met and learned from so many other Dex Holders and pokemon masters, she’s become a braver and wiser person. So what if the only thing that she hasn’t gotten better at is dealing with Ruby? So what if she can’t help but come back to this sentimental spot even though she should’ve grown up and moved on by now?
Just then, she hears a rustle from inside the Secret Base.
Toro readies its fists as Sapphire jumps back and lands on all fours. “Who’s there? Come out!” she growls at the darkness.
“Easy. It’s just me.”
Toro lowers its talons and squawks, immediately recognising the voice.
Ruby steps out into the light, a hand adjusting the frame of his spectacles. He’s stopped wearing his goofy hat, and looks a lot like his dad now. Except, his eyes are kinder. They’ve always been. Zuzu the Swampert appears beside him, greeting them with mild-mannered coos.
“What’re you doing here? You spooked me!” Sapphire asks as she stands upright, more surprised than angry. Zuzu and Toro are much more agreeable with one another, bounding off to play fight in a pile of leaves.
“Very nice to see you again too,” Ruby says with a dash of sarcasm, and inches back when she shoots him a dirty look. “Just thinking of redecorating, I suppose,” he relents, propping a hand on his chin. He examines the mouth of the cave with a measuring tape as Sapphire stands aside, jaw slack. “Remember how this used to look? I must admit it was one of my best interior design projects. I don’t think I gave myself a proper pat on the back for that. No matter, I’ve already got ideas for how to make Secret Base 2.0 even more fabulous!”
Sapphire doesn’t understand what’s happening. Trust Ruby to be the sort of person who you miss, and then immediately want gone when he’s actually around. “That was when we were kids! What… what’s the use of coming back here now? Don’t you have a job?”
Ruby glances over his shoulder mid-measurement and raises an eyebrow. “Pot calling kettle black, much?”
Sapphire sucks in a breath and stands her ground. “This is my neck of the woods! I can come here whenever I want!”
“You know how I never really liked spending time at that house with my dad around? This place is about the closest place I’d call home for me, at least in Hoenn. Lilycove is nice and clean and all, and I hate to admit it, but I was starting to miss this place.” Ruby does not turn around when he says this, but watching the firm line of his chin and the hand he runs along the cave wall, Sapphire can tell that he’s being serious.
“And today’s our anniversary, isn’t it? Of the day we met.” He spins on his heel to finally face her.
Sapphire wills herself not to blush like a thirteen-year old, and it is easy when she thinks about how Ruby shouldn’t be allowed to use that word.
“Pfft. Anniversary? Ain’t that reserved for lovey-dovey couples? Who gave you permission to call it that?” Sapphire feels her heart sting at this, and hopes that it hurts Ruby too, even just a fraction.
The expression on his face shifts, from classic, nonchalant, above-it-all Ruby to a more neutral one. He presses his lips together and slowly winds the measuring tape around his knuckles, fidgeting with his hands.
“Will you help me rebuild the Secret Base, Sapph’?” he tries to change the topic.
“Why should I? I don’t come here anymore.”
“You’re here now, aren’t you?” Ruby points out.
Sapphire sputters. “That’s—argh! Look, maybe to you it’ll be a fun and easy project, something to getcha’ mind off the stress of work. Whatever. This place means a lot more to me than you, and I ain’t in the mood to be a part o’ your flights o’ fancy.”
“It means a lot to me too.” Ruby stares at her, his mouth curving into a frown.
The words burst from Sapphire before she can contain them: “Then why didn’t you come back sooner?”
Her emotions have gotten to him and he fires back without filtering his words either. “I didn’t know what to do! I didn’t know when would be a good time. I didn’t know how scary and disgusting the cave would be. I… I didn’t know how to tell you that I missed you, Sapph’.”
Hearing this from Ruby, the Ruby who is supposed to be selfish, the Ruby she hates, the Ruby she loves, Sapphire clenches her hand into a fist. She does not say a word, instead choosing to glare at him, daring him to continue.
To his credit, he does. “I know I’ve been a Gold-level jerk about it, but I’m not good with words. Running away? Making anything look pretty? All that’s easier than talking about feelings.” Ruby straightens his posture and removes his spectacles, so that he’s looking directly at her. “But Sapph’, all the times we’ve spent and all the times we’re going to spend—they’re important to me too. They’ve always been. I was too young and immature to face it. I’m trying to get better at it. Ten years is a long time to do nothing, and I don’t want to spend the next ten years not doing anything.”
Sapphire bites down on her lip, suppressing the urge to shout at the top of her lungs, to point and laugh at how their roles have reversed. To give him payback for all these years of chasing and dodging and convenient amnesia, hasn’t that been something she’s always wanted?
But Ruby’s words also cause her to think about everything she’s been through with him. She wouldn’t call it ‘doing nothing’. It’s everything but that. Haven’t they been through thick and thin together since their very first adventure? Haven’t they saved the world and held hands more times than she can count? Sure, they never talked about what they meant to each other, but at the end of the day, she knew that Ruby had her back. That he’d be there, always with a new set of clothes for whatever reason, and how she loved wearing the stuff he made even though she was too embarrassed to admit it.
Maybe she should have paid more attention to what Ruby did for her, instead of the stuff he refused to say. Maybe she’s been just as much of an immature brat as him.
“Don’t ignore me,” Ruby says in a soft voice. It is the voice of someone who is guilty, who knows that they don’t deserve a reply, not after what they’ve done, and not done.
For all the mistakes Ruby has made, Sapphire is sure she’s made some too. And Ruby, he never really left her alone, even when they had huge, ugly fights. Even when they were cities apart. He always found a way to show that he was still thinking of her, with sparkly hair clips she only wore on special occasions, and a bag of food that wasn’t meant for her.
Sapphire clears her throat and says, “I’ll help you rebuild the base, on one condition.”
Ruby visibly gulps. “What?”
“Take me out on a date.” She puts her hands on her hips.
He blinks a few times, as if he can’t quite process what she just said.
“Deal?” she asks with a chuckle. It’s funny, seeing Ruby caught off guard.
“Alright,” Ruby concedes at last. Instead of looking defeated, he smiles.
Sapphire lifts her hand up for a handshake. When Ruby takes her hand in his, it is a warm and familiar feeling. It reminds her of deep seas and heavy floods and relentless droughts and soaring through the skies. Of soft, blurry afternoons playing in the grass, childish laughter ringing in the air.
“It’s a deal.”

i cant find a specific post about it (i thought i made one pretty recently? heres one from like a year ago tho thats pretty short) but ive been thinking for a while now that a kanto remake is next
highly skeptical of stars, not because it couldnt be true but because it’s so different from the way theyve done things that it’s unlikely (like sure they break tradition from time to time but it’s obviously a safer bet to predict they won’t)
too early for a sinnoh remake, i talk about that in the post i linked but if stars is real that would make the transition to the switch so then theyd be free to put the sinnoh remake in gen vii instead of waiting until gen viii (itd be weird to start out a generation with a remake since wheres all the new pokemon. theyve also NEVER jumped onto the new handheld system this early, again that’s a tradition they could break but again it’s more likely they wont)
for the record, i believe z is real and was planned for release in early 2016 but the terrorist attack in paris in november 2015 screwed things up because it happened right before z wouldve been announced (and i can definitely imagine tpc avoiding announcing a game about a terrorist attack on pokefrance right on the heels of an actual terrorist attack on actual france, theyve cancelled anime episodes indefinitely for less specific connections) so they just scrapped it since they couldnt afford to push it back as thatd cut into the sun/moon marketing (two games in one year has happened before--frlg and emerald in japan in 2004). not sure what’s going to happen to it so for now i’ll just assume it’ll be sitting under masuda’s bed collecting dust for a while
evidence has seemed to pile up for there being a kanto remake for a while
for one thing it’s been two hardware generations since frlg which means theyre due to be remade--ive also speculated for years that gen vii would be a good time to do it since assuming itd be on the 3ds there wouldnt be any other remake in that generation, because sinnoh would have to wait until the next handheld console
before sm even came out i noticed that all announced alola forms were of kanto pokemon, which, while being no clear proof of anything since they give special treatment to kanto pokemon all the time, suggested to me that if regional variants would be an ongoing concept beyond just alola games, itd make sense if there was a kanto remake to fill sm with variants of mostly kanto pokemon, since it wouldnt make sense to put those in the kanto games (unless they were on the sevii islands or somewhere else equally isolated). this would leave the kanto remake free to have variants of pokemon from other regions. surprisingly sm turned out to have only variants of kanto pokemon, which seemed to further confirm my suspicions, though again it’s not necessarily proof
sm ends with lillie leaving to go to kanto. this seemed to me to be a perfect way to introduce the kanto remakes, because finding out what lillie is up to would be a reason to get more people (particularly newer players) to play the new game. you may be saying, “wait a second, wasnt red in sm? a kanto remake cant take place after sm if it’s been 20 years since his adventure!” and yeah normally that would be right BUT there is a loophole...
an idea i had about 3 years ago was that the second time a set of games gets remade it could be just one game based on the third version. since yellow was p much based on the anime, thatd make the protagonist ash, and not red (and likewise the rival would be gary and not green). theres still the matter of gary and green both being prof oak’s grandsons (and being 20 years apart in age if this is after sm) but it’s definitely possible for them to just be cousins
another big thing that made a yellow remake more likely to me was when we found out this year’s movie would be a remake of the beginning of the anime--this would make the movie and game tie into each other perfectly
lastly the japanese tpc twitter has been recently posting short clips of the gen i games, which as always could mean nothing special since it’s gen i, but even serebii has considered they might be subtle hints at something (note that it’s purely speculation which is why he only mentions it on his personal twitter)
so, in summary, my theory:
pokemon yellow remake for 3ds, to be released this fall

Dat Genesis Aesthetic
Welcome to the next level of the Attract Mode blog! As explained last time, every Monday or Tuesday (or Wednesday) I’ll be sharing all the wacky game culture goodness that crossed my path the previous week (mixed with bits and pieces that I’ve long wanted to share, but haven’t, cuz I didn’t think it worked as a stand alone post or some other reason).
And kicking things off is Studio SUPER’s “Lives & Times”, in which they created eight different animated scenes, all running in tandem on a CRT monitor (i actually discovered this in a post in a CRT enthusiasts group I belong to on Facebook, which is a private, so I’ll say no more), and all of which screams dat Genesis aesthetic. Each of the ten monitors displays a letter, spelling out “Lives & Time”; the above are actually animated gifs, but due to Tumblr’s technical constraints, they’re simply still images, hence why I’m not going to bother to share the individual monitors (so please check out the source to see everything in action).
But yeah, it once again warms this old school fan of Sega’s 16-bitter that the kids today are embracing the look and feel of the platform, whereas those used to be punching bags, primarily among Super Nintendo devotees. Though, to be honest, the above actually reminds me of 32X’s aesthetic; the other night was my yearly attempt at giving Knuckles Chaotix another shot, and dear God does it ever look like someone attempt at making a game based upon found internet art and vaporwave album art that’s all been inspired by the Genesis, which means I absolutely adore AV, but dear God is it unplayable or what.

It’s that time again, in which I really wish I had a PC. And GDC has barely gotten under way! By the end, I’ll no doubt see some new game that I’m dying to play, but cannot, unless it gets ported to the PS4. Though in this instance, I’m talking about DESCENT, which Prosthetic Knowledge describes as “Part music video, part demoscene production, part art history remix”. At least I can enjoy this video in the meanwhile…

Among the more interesting questions asked and observations made…
- Yeah, what exactly was the deal behind Fester’s Quest? Why in the heck was there an Addams Family game in the year 1989 (and not 1990 as stated in the video) for the NES? Then again, the same could be asked of Midnight Mutants, which was based upon the Munsters for the Atari 7800 in 1990. Is there a connection between the two?
- Not only did I have no idea that there was an arcade board based upon the PC Engine, I also never made the assumption myself that the SuperGrafx was perhaps originally destined for the US, given that the name of the PC Engine follow-up is more closely tied to the name of the US version, the TurboGrafx!
- Though I do recall people not being all that impressed with Super Mario World’s visuals upon release, as well as how the original Game Boy was considered a disappointment for a long while there. In fact, in EGM’s end of the year assessment for gaming hardware, for many years there, the GB was constantly scoring super low numbers.
One can never understate how important Pokemon’s arrival was for the platform in the US, which is actually 21 years ago today BTW/FYI!
Speaking of Game Boys, yet again, I really wanna play Kimutaku vs Predator; according to obscurevideogames, Takuya Kimura is from the J-pop boy band SMAP, but I bet most of you knew that already…
And back to the subject of video games rags; which cover featuring a shmup do you prefer, the one with Xevious…

And back to shmups, as well as something else that one of the major outlets recently posted that’s definitely worth a look for anyone who may have missed it, is The Verge pointing out a rather intriguing part of a Fast Company write-up on Atari head honcho Nolan Bushnell’s early 80s high-tech incubator. Which is how the triangle in virtually every GPS system out there is actually the ship from Asteroids!

Said it before, and I’ll say it again; I don’t have to agree with BitHead1000 to find him hilarious.
As you may have heard, a Dreamcast signed by Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst was recently up for grabs on eBay. The original auction ended without a winner, which means everyone out there still has a chance to be one! One of six; I want to know the circumstances that led to Durst signing a Dreamcast, let alone several. Though I have to wonder if the seller will actually go through them all, let alone the first…

Fred was stubborn. But not so stubborn that when his pink haired tormentors mentioned that Executive Proton would be coming downstairs soon that he didn’t give in. But he’d been stubborn enough to earn himself scars.
Executive Proton, he’d learnt, was the name of the green haired man who’d questioned him back in Cerulean City. Apparently, he had a reputation. People called him ‘the scariest and cruellest guy in Team Rocket’, and the grunts made damn sure he knew that. As if some of them weren’t bad enough. The creepy, black-clad thugs were quick to welcome him to the base.It turned out, the whips Rocket grunts wore around their belts weren’t just for unruly pokemon. Fred wasn’t sure how long it had been, but within the first few hours, he was stripped down to his underwear, ribbons of blood across his back, bruised ribs and fractured bones. He was in no position to run away, even if the doors to the dungeon cell were open. In truth, the ‘dungeon’ was nothing more than a basement of run down storage rooms, converted to the scream filled torture chambers.
Sometimes Fred thought he could hear Ted screaming.
For a while, he’d hoped that if he kept explaining it to the whip wielding grunts, they’d get the picture, and let him go with just the scars to remind him of Rocket. But the closest thing to a response he got out of the Rockets was a sarcastic imitation of his whines and pleas to let him go. They watched him always. If he started to fall asleep, they’d douse him in freezing cold water. If he complained of hunger, they’d eat good smelling food in front of him. They watched him relieve himself, watched and laughed as he tried pitifully to escape. It was far too easy for them, and far too hard for him. What he’d thought was starvation on the streets didn’t cover how he’d felt in the cells. Perhaps it was a relief when he’d croaked out a lying confession that, yes, they had run away, they were deserters, desperately gripping to his captors legs just for their attention. When Proton did arrive, all he got was a backhanded slap and an order to wash himself up and get into uniform.
Only when he was handed the clean pressed uniform did he realise what had happened. It was a trick. They knew all along that he’d never been a Rocket. Perhaps they were pressed for members, or maybe they just wanted to make them pay for their minor nuisances over the years with service. Fred cried in the shower block. There really wasn’t any going back now. What Proton had implied to him… about him coming for them if they deserted was only confirmed by the grunts. The words ‘gutted’, ‘disposed’ and ‘terminated’ were thrown around like pleasantries in the dungeons. Team Rocket’s base was more like a prison than actual prison was, filthy shower blocks shared between rooms of grunts, each character worse than the last. Fred had managed to salvage some of his things from Team Rocket, but a lot of his shirts had been taken. Predictably, so had their wallet, not that it had much in it. He took Ted’s things as well, to keep them relatively safe until he was released.
But he was far more stubborn than Fred.
He was given the order to collect him about a week after his own release. Things could be worse. He had a bed to lay his head on, he was fed (no matter how disgusting the food was), he’d even be paid eventually. It felt like getting used to school all over again, only he was older, and every third person in the corridor was the school bully. Fred tucked his blonde hair beneath his hat, careful that no one of any rank saw his still-blonde locks. He knew a few grunts got away with it, but there was no way he wanted to spoil his hair, especially since he’d just started care for it again. Maybe one day, he’d get away with it, he mused as he left the relative safety of his quarters. Putting his head down, he charged through the corridors as if he was on important orders, knowing this was the best way not to be stopped by some uppity agent, keen to lump their paper work on a lowly grunt. He just about knew his way down to the basement, careful to avoid the way to the science department. His head was bowed as he walked through the dimly lit halls, keeping a meek eye out for the grunt who’d sent him a message to pick up his friend.
“You the traitor who’s here for the other traitor?” a tall, goateed grunt asked him. Fred replied with a nod, craning his neck to look up. The other’s response was to open door he was next to, unbolting and unlocking it first. A rush of foul smelling air came up to meet Fred, followed by a pair of giggling grunts.
“He’s all yours now, kid. Help him get cleaned up. Don’t think he can do much on his own now.”
They handed him a pile of clean uniform, patting it as they sauntered past. And he was left with the quiet and the gaping doorway to Ted’s cell. He hadn’t seen the other in over a week. Would he be angry at him? He wouldn’t have long to find out.
Upon his first step into the darkened room, reminding him only too much of his own cell, it was hard to make out where Ted was. As his eyes scanned the room, he thought he saw a corpse, until he was hit with the dawning realisation that Ted was the corpse. Or not quite a corpse, rather. Fred’s own breath caught until he saw the sporadic rise and fall of his friends bare chest. But Fred wondered how far off dead he was. Ted was covered in his own bodily fluids, from vomit to blood and everything in between. Whether he was humiliated, or just too malnourished, Ted’s eyes wouldn’t meet his, lids perpetually covering the top half. His hair was matted and stuck to his forehead, limp curls wet with sweat. Fred had never seen him look so… defeated. What did Fred say?
“Are you okay, Teddy?” He rushed to sit Ted up, but the young man didn’t even grace him with a sarcastic response. Fred tried shaking his shoulder to get something out of him, but he was catatonic, the life gone from his ice blue eyes.
Fred had to clean him up, get him in uniform like he’d been ordered to. But there was no point putting Ted in the fresh uniform like this. He placed the uniform on the table, the only surface not completely covered in blood, and stripped off his own sweater, and then his shirt, dressing the rag-doll Ted in it to protect his modesty, as well as his own underwear. He checked the corridor for any executives, and carried Ted as subtly as he could back to his quarters, completely commando. With one shoulder under Ted’s armpit, it was cumbersome going, especially with no effort coming from him. Although… Fred doubted he’d even realised he’d been moved.
When finally they were alone again, in their quarters, their new home, Fred could finally wash his friend and try to feed him. He dragged him into a shower block, sitting him up against a wall and turning a stream of warm water on. This elicited the first response from Ted he’d seen all day. A sharp hiss and a shudder as the water hit his back. Pulling him forward tentatively, Fred peeled his shirt off Ted, realising it was soaked with blood. His back was a tapestry of cuts, varying depths and levels of how healed each one was, but there was scarcely an inch of skin without a wound. All of a sudden, Fred felt stupid for having complained. He carried on faithfully, gently washing his filthy hair, cleaning off the chunks of dried bile from his friend’s chest, careful not to push water into his wounds. When he was done washing him, he turned the shower off, leaving Ted to sit like a broken toy in the bathroom, praying no one would come in to see him naked.
As he was collecting clean towels and fresh laundered underwear, as well as Ted’s new pressed uniform, Fred heard a voice from the bathroom.
“... all my fault… all over… ruined everything…”
It didn’t feel right. Everything felt wrong, as if everything was inside out. That couldn’t be Ted speaking, but he was the only one in the room, right? Carrying his things, Fred rushed into the bathroom to check. But it was as he’d left it, only Ted, sat with long legs splayed out at the base of the wall, lank hair covering his eyes. As cautiously as he could, Fred dried his friend, dying the white towel red. He tried applying antiseptic cream to the welts and gashes over Ted’s back, but it didn’t stop the largest and freshest of them bleeding. Perhaps he’d have to take Ted to the medical bay… if he could even get Ted in there. He crudely bandaged up Ted’s pale skin, dressed him and stood him up, finally managing to get him to carry his own weight. He dried his hair with the bloody towel, brushed the tangles out of the curls, and clipped it back with a pair of hair clips stolen from lost and found, covering the lot with the grunts trade mark cap.
Ted still looked like a corpse.
“Come on, Teddy,” Fred said, forcing a smile onto his face. “It’s gonna be okay.” He grabbed his friend’s shoulders, tip-toeing up so they could almost be at eye level. “We’re going to get out of here. I promise. We ain--”
“No. It’s useless. It’s over, Fred.”
