The Winter Palace
by Philip Larkin
Most people know more as they get older: I give all that the cold shoulder.
I spent my second quarter-century Losing what I had learnt at university.
And refusing to take in what had happened since. Now I know none of the names in the public prints,
And am starting to give offence by forgetting faces And swearing I’ve never been in certain places.
It will be worth it, if in the end I manage To blank out whatever it is that is doing the damage.
Then there will be nothing I know. My mind will fold into itself, like fields, like snow.

Before The Band Stops Playing
— (Solas & Te’lise)
.
I repainted this piece from a while ago and added more to the story! I hope you enjoy :)
.
The soft steps of bare feet against polished stone alerted Solas to her presence. He pushed himself off of the wall of the balcony and turned to greet her, his heart squeezing near-painfully in his chest as her face lit up when she saw him. He did not deserve such an expression from her.
“You did well tonight,” he said by way of greeting, extending a gloved hand in her direction. “None of this would have been possible without you.”
Te’lise smiled. She looked exhausted, and her thin hand trembled slightly as it slid into his, but he was thankful to note that she didn’t possess the sickly pallor that usually accompanied an episode of her illness. It was regular tiredness, nothing more.
“I may have been helpful, but I am quite content to never sneak around as a servant in the lion’s den ever again.” Te’lise sighed out, drawing a chuckle from him.
Her’s had been a high-risk position, one that she wouldn’t have even been able to take had she not insisted so passionately that she help the mission in some way. While the Inquisitor twirled with snakes and sharks in the glittering ballroom, she was scurrying about all over the palace, gathering information that would be useful to the cause.
“Ma serannas,” she spoke up shyly, drawing him from his own musings. “I owe you my thanks, don’t I? You were looking out for me tonight.”
Solas had been, but he was pleasantly surprised that she noticed. He had taken great pains to subtly subvert any unwanted attention from the silver-haired serving girl darting in and out of palace rooms, whether it be by simply sparking conversation - or by twirling his fingers behind his back in deadly incantations, ensuring that whoever was pursuing her wouldn’t be able to anymore.
“I need no thank you for doing my duty,” Solas said, though the statement was far nobler than he felt. He grew distracted by the way her fine hair fell around her freckled shoulders in waterfalls, the deep blue ribbon weaved in her Life-Braid fluttering in the gentle evening breeze, and the softness of her limpid green eyes as they watched him.
Suddenly possessed by an odd sort of desperation, he weaved his fingers through hers and said, “Te’lise. Before the band stops playing, dance with me.”
She blinked up at him, agape for a moment. “I don’t - I mean, I’ve never… danced before,” she said timidly. “I don’t know how.”
“Nonsense,” Solas smiled, stepping closer. He slid his free hand around to rest politely across her upper back, heart giving another near-painful twinge as her cheeks pinked under his touch. “Here, step up on my feet.”
That startled a giggle from her. “What, like a child?”
“No,” he said, “For guidance. You are tired, are you not? Simply hold on and I will lead the way.”
While she had been hesitant before, there was no hint of nerves on her face as she did as he bid, stepping up onto his boots and leaning against his chest. She glanced up and raised a silver brow. “Now what?”
“Now,” he grinned, “We dance.”
Te’lise began to laugh as they twirled, the sound twinkling brightly around the balcony like silver bells. Solas couldn’t help but watch her, engraving the picture in his memory like the enraptured fool that he was. Why? Why did she have to be so beautiful?
‘You will regret this,’ his mind whispered urgently, and yet somehow he didn’t. ‘You should let her go.’ Solas pulled her closer. ‘Let her go.’ His grip on her hand tightened.
“If you let me go now, I will collapse into an embarrassing heap!” Te’lise exclaimed suddenly, and for a brief terrifying moment he thought that she could somehow hear his thoughts. But no, she remained blissfully unaware of his internal struggle, staring up into his eyes with a smile that radiated life and laughter - a precious expression so rarely displayed. “Don’t you dare let me go, Solas!”
If only she knew. Solas leaned closer – heart aching, body yearning. ‘You are making a mistake. This cannot last.’
And yet he couldn’t bring himself to pull away.
“I wouldn’t dream of doing so,” Was what he finally managed to say, his voice heavy with the defeated tone of a man wholeheartedly succumbing to his demons. “Hold on tight!”
Te’lise released a startled yelp that quickly dissolved into vocal joy as he twirled her around the balcony in wide arcs, her silver servants’ dress sweeping across the polished floor. He watched tenderly as the stars danced in her eyes, and Solas allowed himself to forget everything in the outside world, if only for a little while.

Rhythm [Cassandra Pentaghast]
Rating: General audience
Warnings: None
Category: F/M
Fandom: Dragon Age
Relationship: MaleInquisitor/Cassandra Pentaghast
Summary: Male Lavellan Inquisitor wants to dance with the beautiful, but stubborn, Cassandra Pentaghast.
Tumblr media
Your bored, tired eyes glazed over across the crowd of party-goers as you swirled the glass of sparkling champagne in one hand while the other buried itself deep within the pocket of the black dress pants of your tuxedo. Quiet piano music played off into the background as chatter and laughter filled the air. You sighed once, took a sip, and sighed again as your [eye colored] gaze moved from one spot to the next.
From across the room, you could spot the short stature of Varric Tethras sitting at a table with a crowd around him- more than likely, he was telling an over-exaggerated tell about you. Probably something along the lines of "and then Lavellan slew a bear single-handedly with his eyes closed."
You chuckled at the thought before something, in the corner of your eye caught your attention.
Turning your head, your breath caught in your throat at the sight before you.
There, leaning against the wall fidgeting nervously, was Cassandra Pentaghast. Her athletic build was squeezed into a slim, open-legged, black dress. The long braid she'd normally have pinned to her head was now let-loose to flow down her backside.
You must've been staring as she turned and caught your eye. She offered a small smile before wading her way through the crowd and over to your side.
"Some party Vivienne has decided to throw, huh?" Her thick accent flowed through your pointed ears as her dark chocolate-colored eye's met yours.
"Haha, yeah. But I'm not really one for these types of things...." you shrugged as your gaze nervously moved away from her.
"I...can relate," she admitted. "I only came because Viv insisted that I wear this dress," she gestured down to herself.
"Vivie does have divine taste's. You look wonderful, Cassandra." This time you met her gaze. She needed to see that you were telling her the truth and not just trying to be nice in hopes of not offending her.
Cas' face instantly burned red at the unexpected compliment just as the band, that was previously playing something light and soft, kicked up the beat to some soft Jazz-swing music.
"Hey," you caught her attention again. "Would you like to dance?"
"N-No! No...I can't, really, I'm a horrible dancer."
"Awe common, Cassie, you can't be that bad." You held out your hand for her to take, "I'll lead."
Hesitantly, and mush to your surprise, she took your hand.
You started off with the simple one step forward two step's back as you guided her with your right hand on her hip and the left one holding her's.
At first, the ravenette was tense in your hold and kept stumbling over her own feet. But with soft-spoken words of encouragement and gentle eyes locked to her's in reassurance. You physically felt the muscle's in her back relax and her stronghold your hand and shoulder loosen.
And before you knew it, there was a small circle gathered around the two of you clapping to the beat, and Cassandra was smiling brightly than the sun.
And as the song mellowed out and your dance came to an end Cassandra pulled you into a kiss.
"Thank you, Lavellan, I didn't know you had such a good rhythm."
"If you think that's good rhythm then you should come up to my room tonight," you sent her a goofy wink- to which she rolled her eyes at.

Two portraits of Alexander Kerensky painted in 1917 by Ilya Yefimovich Repin, along with a photograph of Kerensky in the same year and location (the former Tsar's library in the Winter Palace).
Source, with more interesting information.

If I had a nickle for every European palace that was stormed by revolutionaries and then turned into an art museum (in this chapter of my textbook) I would have three nickles. Which isn't a lot but it's weird it happened 3 times.

I found a formal wear replacement mod I like and even tested to make sure it works before I do the quest for real.

Looking pretty sharp. I think ideally I’d have black, silver and red sash because those are Inquisition colors, technically, kinda? But black on black is very classy.
I wish every single dress in this game wasn’t so ugly and unflattering, a pretty mesh doesn’t matter if the shape is bad. Alas to headcanon world I go and imagine a gown worthy of Duke Gaspard’s grandstanding.

A friend of mine sent me a video of Blake Lively’s transforming dress at the Met Gala this year & I thought it was so pretty, I wanted to try drawing Visériel in it! 💜💚 Then, of course, I went one step further & gave it a personalized color treatment, (her signature colors are purple & green). 🥰
