it's fascinating to me the way that different social media platforms result in different types of fandom behavior. while s5 of tma was airing, I spent a good amount of time on tma tiktok (I log back in about once every two months now, going back to in-person school after a year a half of lockdown seem to re-blanace my brain and made me once again not really enjoy the format) while still using tumblr as my main socmed, and while there was a lot of overlap in the fan culture, some things were notably different.
tumblr tma fans had near-encyclopedic knowledge of the source material, but it was kind of an ongoing joke for tiktok tma fans that everyone binged the whole show in a week-long fugue state and lost memory of about 35% of it. tumblr has virtually no character limit and allows posts to be passed around by users indefinitely, which lends itself to fairly in-depth meta analysis being made and shared until most any fan could say "the time and space discrepancies at hill top road? psh yeah, I know all about them, I've read seven scrupulously cited posts that lay out all the details." for the entire time that s5 was airing, tiktok videos could still only be a minute long, and I know from a lot of personal effort that there's only so much you can fit into a one minute script that you also have to memorize and record (and cc manually with tiktok text stickers, as they didn't add the caption feature until april 2021) if you want the process to take less than four hours of your one mortal human life. and then you only see the video if your following or fyp algorithm shows it to you. there were a few tma meta-ish videos that got popular because other people would make their own videos referencing them and tag the account so their followers could see what they were talking about, but it's much harder to circulate content you like there. several times I saw people post videos saying "I got into cosplay to film some [agnes or annabelle or gerry or another secondary character] and I just realized I have no idea what their deal actually is 💀".
a thing that tiktok tma fandom was definitely better at than tumblr tma fandom was accurately remembering certain pieces of characterization and the flow of certain scenes. I've seen a bunch of posts on here where someone is trying to argue a point with excerpts from the text ("x character is nicer than you all give them credit for" "x character is so mean to y character in this scene" "z theory can't be true because y character said a line that disproves it") where the argument only holds up because the poster has gotten these excerpts from a transcript dive and hasn't listened to the episodes they're from recently, because while the text alone can be construed to mean one thing, the way it's delivered on-podcast clearly intends another. tiktok, being an audio and video based medium, allows audio clips to be shared around a lot, and cosplayers would often all make videos acting along to the same show clips of juicy interpersonal drama, and so tiktok fans, though they may have had less overall memory of what characters said, always had a better grasp on how they said it. an average tiktok tma fan might not have remembered melanie's subplot about war ghosts, but they would know the nuances of how the way she talks to jon changes between mag 28 and mag 155.

Magical Boys WIP Intro
Saving their friend (and the whole world, I guess?) with the power of love, magic and being kinda gross.
Falling into a swamp is never fun, but it's worse when it turns out to be a magic swamp with a monster that kidnaps the most popular, princely and perfect guy in school.
It also transforms Billy and his two classmates, Beau and Younes, into very stereotypical magical boys —frills, sparkles and colour-coordinated outfits included.
Not only do they have to navigate this bizarre new world in form-fitting skirts and shorts, they have to do it quickly in order to rescue Arno before the monster that kidnapped him... tries to marry him?
Billy, Beau and Younes have quite a big task ahead of them and that's not even to mention the interpersonal drama teenagers can and will get into when it really isn't the time for it.
---
Based entirely on my love for the magical girl genre and everything it entails when it comes to modern fantasy romance with my own gay and trans spin on it.
A three-part story catered to a (queer) young adult audience.
Current status: book 1 draft 1 finished, writing draft 2
Third person limited | Multiple POVs | present tense
In case you're interested in following along while i'm writing this story. I will be tagging it as "#magical boys wip" for as long as it doesn't have an official title, and let me know if you want to be added to a taglist, so I can start one up.
Character introductions for the boys!

Jolie's thoughts on
The Gloria Scott (Sherlock & Co. podcast)
Oof, plenty to unpack in this one!
And it‘s no surprise that it's generated a lot of fanart, so plenty of recs in this post, too.
"We share a flat, a business and a blossoming friendship" - Yes you do, and it’s ✨beautiful✨.
John not wanting to "shout through the door like a hostage negotiator" 😆
Anyone else desperately want to see Sherlock shooting a nail gun into a space hopper?
John threatening to beat Hunter up to defend Sherlock. 🥺
I wasn’t sure at first how I felt about Mariana tagging along, and I know it’s the greatest imaginable horror for a lot of us that the show might go down a John/Mariana route… but when they stayed over at the Trevors' and John and Mariana got to share a room, the way they were chatting as friends and not flirting at all before bedtime was reassuring to me, rather than disquieting.
That said, I don’t know if we’re kidding ourselves that this show will always just be soft and kind and warm and free from any interpersonal drama… ACD did create Moriarty and Reichenbach, and he did give Watson a wife and made him move out of Baker Street, *twice*… I know Joel Emory said John‘s not gonna marry and move out in this interview but 'Sign of Four' without a LI for Watson?!
Talking about LIs, I get the impression that so far, the accepted Viclock fanon always has Sherlock pining after Victor. Interesting to see it the other way round!
I also have FEELINGS about Mr Watson senior getting blown up on active duty and then his son nearly getting blown up on active duty as well. I also have feelings about John‘s choice to be an army doctor being the perfect combination of his midwife mum and his soldier dad. The carer and the fighter. *happy sigh*
Sherlock trying to swear. I CAN'T.
I don’t think I‘m able to put my thoughts on this whole scene into any words that make sense, so instead, please check out
this wonderful fanart by @abstractfrog
this one by @mayhasopinions
and this one by @matustheus
Sherlock calling John John, though. 🥺
Am I a bad person though to feel that Sherlock laughing along with John was fake? (Meant nicely, like an exercise in empathy, but fake all the same.)
The orchid analogy was genius. I am, however, laughing a bit at Harry Attwell’s Sherlock nearly orgasming from the brilliance of his own deductions. (He often does, but it’s particularly noticeable in this one.)
SPOILERS for the plot below…

I honestly don’t get why you’d go to the logistical trouble of raiding an oil rig. I mean, it makes sense if you hold the workers and the production hostage for ransom from the stinking rich oil companies, or if you stage a political protest there, but that’s not what they did in the story, with communications with the mainland cut and everything happening in secret. What were they after? Who keeps money and valuables on an oil rig for anyone to steal?
Also, how did a man who is rich enough to start his life owning high end property in Camden Town become a violent criminal in Australia?
Hunter is an awful man but if you look at the amount of trauma he's been through, it would have been a miracle if he had turned out any differently…
But anyway. It was a tricky case to modernise and they did it well.
I thought it ended rather abruptly, especially regarding Victor and his dad, but @b4kuch1n has fixed that with this wonderful artwork.

MOST ACTIVE MUSE(S)?
// Meddles here is technically my most active, but I'm doing stuff behind the scenes for my lads Brom ( @of-forossa ), and Samuel Whist ( @fishermcn ) so I'll add them here too lmao.
RP PET PEEVES?
// Ah hell man, probably a lack of progression when it comes to replies? When I'm writing a thread with someone, I do what I can to make sure they have enough from my own to continue the story we're telling together. So getting a reply in return that doesn't move things forward puts me in kind of a bind y'know? Matching or similar length comes with that as well, though I don't expect folks to match me word for word so much as giving as good as they've gotten!
Communication is also key! I know that it can be uncomfortable or a bit daunting to try to chat with folks you haven't gotten to know all that well, but with threads being something we create together we really should be on the same page. Even just a little update or the like is preferable to total radio silence rofl.
EXPERIENCE / HOW MANY YEARS?
// Shoot, it's probably been about twelve, maybe thirteen years now? Been on here the whole time and have bounced around to a few different fandoms before more or less settling down into the soulsborne community.
FLUFF, ANGST, OR SMUT?
// I'm definitely an angst kinda guy, though usually in the sense that things are going down or conflict is brewing rather than interpersonal drama. I live for fight-writing and the tension that comes with lives being on the line. Fluff is usually reserved for one and done replies rather than threads because I feel it's more impactful thst way, while smut is... well. I'm getting better at it, but it's definitely my weakest writing of the bunch. That, and I admittedly can get a bit nervous posting it out here in the wild for everyone to see (////-\\\\)
PLOTS OR MEMES?
// Both! Plots and plotting are my preferred go-to for our muses to get to know each other and establish what their relationship will be like going ahead, while with memes I'll usually go ham on a single reply with the intent of further fleshing out what we've pieced together for our muses.
LONG OR SHORT REPLIES?
// If you've known me on my other blogs you already know I tend to get long winded XD. Short replies never feel like I've said enough honestly, and by taking the time to get in depth with them I reckon it opens the door wider for potential interactions (memes) or it gives the other person more room to reply with (threads). Least amount I'll do is around two to three paragraphs.
TIME TO WRITE?
// I'd love to tell you folks that I'm a responsible, orderly guy who keeps a good sleep schedule and has a set time for writing. Unfortunately I'm little more than an animal who's as likely to bump out an ask or reply at 4:00 in the morning as I am to post something mid-afternoon. Ideally though... I prefer the evenings for it. More privacy, more time to gather my thoughts and less demands for me personally to have to address.
ARE YOU LIKE YOUR MUSE(S)?
// I'm a firm believer in the notion that muns typically have something either in common with or identify strongly with their muses in some form or another, and I'm no exception. Meddles might be a conqueror, cruel and malicious, but struggling against a seemingly impossible task and not wanting to be alone in this world... yeah. Yeah, I can relate to that. It helps me put myself in their shoes and understand them better if there's something about them I identify with.

✣ Blake Wrapped: KDrama Edition 📹
Almost exactly a year ago, I watched Goblin for the first time and loved it, as I knew I would (I am so very much the target audience for that show it’s not even funny). And when I started retagging the gifs and stuff I had reposted from that time, I saw that I tagged something with “I’m not in a kdrama phase per se, but…” Reader, I lied. The kdrama phase was just waiting dormant for its moment to overtake my life. Here’s my rough ranking of what I saw this year.
#1: Coffee Prince (2007)
Tumblr media
It’s a little dated, but it also has worn tremendously well considering its contemporaries, and the bones are flawless: great writing with well-rounded characters, a gorgeously evocative soundtrack, a lovable cast. It has recognizable tropes (rich boy/poor girl, second leads, deceptions, etc) but never feels cliche. Also, it’s incredibly queer. Yes, the endgame of the main pair is happily heterosexual but the male lead works through a gay awakening and the female lead is basically non-binary. Even the second couple challenge gender roles in a refreshing way. I’ve only seen it twice because of platform difficulties, but it has compelling rewatch value.
#1’ : Goblin/Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (2016)
Tumblr media
This show is a masterpiece. It has its weak moments here and there (one dreepy song in the OST, the female leads could be fleshed out more, some of the mythology is spit and string), but it’s such a stunning production in the whole that you don’t really get stuck on that. The cinematography is some of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen in any piece of film ever, the instrumental music is unmatched, it engages with deep themes, and the interpersonal dynamics are gorgeous (I love the three-of-us-in-this-marriage feel among the mains). It’s also incredibly moving, especially in parts that you don’t expect. I’ve seen this five times and I’m still not bored of it.
#1.5: Tale of the Nine Tailed (2020)
Tumblr media
Considering how much I’ve yelled about this, you’d think it would be higher, and I think my overall complaint about it is that, on a craft level, it’s telling two stories: the overt story is an immortal romance, but the underneath story is about family and redemption, and that’s the story that’s the compelling one. Unfortunately, unlike the first two I listed, the theme and plot don’t always cohere as well as they could. That being said, the characters are top-notch, the cinematography and effects are great, and the atmosphere always feels just a little bit off to be properly otherworldly. It gave me my OTP and set off an obsession. I need to rewatch it and suffer all over again.
#2: Hidden Identity (2015)
Tumblr media
Of course, this drama is flawed, as viewers always seem to like pointing out, but I also did watch all sixteen episodes in less than 48 hours during a school week, which tells you something about its gripping pacing and structure. The episodes are, well, episodic, but the cliffhangers are fantastic, the various threads build well to the final boss, and It was also just a really well-produced show? The cinematography and fight choreography were masterfully executed, the cast really made the most of their roles, and the theme music was addictive. I was also, of course, watching it for the Plot (Kim Beom).
#2.5: Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 (2023)
Tumblr media
It’s hard for me to evaluate this objectively because so much of it was fan-service, but since I was the fan being serviced, how could I not like it? It lacked the chic sexiness of the first season, but it was full of sincerity and incredible characters making heart-breaking and meaningful connections with each other—the writing improved, thank goodness—and the mix of fantasy, historical drama, and western made for a really fun setting. I enjoyed the shortened structure of having only 12 episodes instead of the standard 16 since it seemed to hold the pacing to a tighter rhythm.
#3: Special Labor Inspector Mr. Jo (2019)
Tumblr media
Would I rewatch this? Probably not. Did I enjoy the heck out of it the first time? Absolutely. It’s a sharp, smart satire whose virtue lies in its breezy ability to entertain as a tall tale while keeping the themes and social commentary incredibly grounded. It’s amazing how a show with such cynicism could also be such fun. The cast was excellent and the plot deliberately uses familiar tropes of rich families, hired gangs, and love struggles to push through its message: Power destroys. Heroism is kindness. Sometimes all you need is one very angry and very tired gym teacher turned bureaucrat to make life better.
#4: Boys Over Flowers (2008)
Tumblr media
This should not be as high as it is, but there were moments I still haven’t stopped thinking about and want to see again, which means it must have had something going on, even though I’m not sure what it was. I could never tell whether it was being ridiculous and outlandish on purpose or the show runners really thought they were making serious television. Exactly two songs in the soundtrack were good, and you also had that theme song as proper paratextual warning, and the outfits were what conservative people probably thing Queer Eye is. I do see why people like it. It’s just the kind of liking you have to do while mildly intoxicated.
#5: That Winter, the Wind Blows (2013)
Tumblr media
This one was melodramatic to the hilt, but somehow weirdly compelling, both through the elaborate ruse that sets up the plot and through the outrageous beauty of the two leads. This is the kind of overdramatic and indulgent nonsense you sometimes want in fiction, especially when its gorgeous to look at. The male lead goes around in suspenders and nice pants looking like a 1930s gangster. His sidekick’s hair and outfit anticipates David Tennant’s Crowley by six years. The female lead’s disability was pretty sensitively portrayed. Sometimes that’s all you can ask for.
Bonus (movies): You all know my thoughts about Flight. Also going to mention Hellcats, which was absurd but also deserves full points for having a main character come out as gay for her best friend).

merthur fic recs: oblivious!arthur
1. Am I The Clotpole? by highlynerdy, tehfanglyfish
Business is booming at the Rising Sun thanks to a new game called “Am I The Clotpole?” The rules are simple: people write in with their interpersonal disputes, an anonymous arbiter determines who was the clotpole in those disagreements, and tavern goers enjoy a night of gossip and reasonably priced drinks.
Even though his mouthy manservant proclaimed him a clotpole years ago, King Arthur loves the game, as it gives him an excuse to spend more time with Merlin.
The game is bringing people closer, including Arthur and Merlin, and all seems to be well until Merlin starts disappearing on Sundays, refusing to tell Arthur where he’s gone or what he’s been doing. When Arthur’s curiosity gets the better of him, he makes several unexpected discoveries about the man he’s been secretly in love with for years.
Will Arthur handle these revelations with grace and confess his own secret, or will he earn the title of Camelot’s biggest clotpole?
Words by tehfanglyfish Art by highlynerdy
~~~
arthur misses the most obvious clues in this fic and i love him for that. he’s so precious it’s insane.
2. Curling. For Camelot! by ravenwilds (@ravenwilds)
 Not for the first time, Merlin is late for training. He really hadn’t meant to be, but he’s had a very disturbed morning. He’d been woken up at five o’clock by the sound of Arthur singing “I feel pretty and witty and gay,” in the shower. It was a brave choice for the captain of a men’s curling team, and for a Crown Prince – but then Merlin had to admit Arthur was brave in his own way – brave or crazy – one of the two.
At the age of twenty-one Prince Arthur is proud that his men’s curling team are the first people from the tiny country of Camelot to ever compete in the Olympic games. He just wishes his rag-tag teammates – and one very distracting team member in particular – would take the whole thing more seriously.
Meanwhile, Merlin can’t believe he’s at the Olympics – he didn’t even know what curling was a year ago! This would be the trip of a lifetime, if only he didn't have to share a room with his very bossy, very attractive, prat of a team captain.
~~~
adhjfjkfhdakjf merlin literally confesses and arthur goes “hm he must find me disgusting. shame”
3. Destiny by diner_drama (@diner-drama)
"Merlin," yelped Arthur, outraged and relieved in equal measure. "What on earth are you- Is this what you meant by powerful, ancient magic? You can make your eyes go sparkly and then fix people's clothing?"
Merlin stopped short and rubbed the back of his own neck awkwardly. "Among other things, yes."
"And you've been moping around all day about this?"
"You didn't believe me! I was baring my soul to you and you were so arrogant that you just-"
"You told me that you'd saved my life a hundred times with the mystical power of your warlock skills," said Arthur, wiggling his fingers as though casting a spell. "Not that you were hiding the ability to dress me more efficiently."
~~~
arthur himbo is my fav trope
Hello! I'm getting caught up on all your amazing asks here... But here's my pre-emptive Ask for Storytelling Saturday for next week:
Describe your WIP in bullet points so my ADHD brain gets it quickly!
Tumblr media
hey hey Belle!! oh man, I also have to clean out my inbox, it's getting a bit embarrassing haha... I know you said this is a pre-emptive STS ask, but!.. I saw it and got excited lol, so you're getting it answered Now
so! my current WIP, When White Crows Cry, described in bullet points:
(this is gonna be long)
it's a science fantasy?? only instead of robots and space we have chemistry and pathology lol
also dark academia vibes
set in a secondary world reminiscent of 19th century-esque europe, only with modern advancements in science
the magic system is science-based - essentially, if you wanna manipulate the fabric of reality, you gotta. understand said fabric of reality
so, to cast a believable illusion you need to perfectly understand color and light and depth and all that (so you gotta be a kickass realism artist lol)
or, to change a glass ball into a gold one, you gotta understand the molecular composition of each material and know how to manipulate it so it would change forms
there's one tiny teensy issue with magic, though - it is a limited resource ahaha
ANYWAY that's the gist of it
main character - Quil, an exceptional transmutation mage who got exiled some years ago for performing human transmutation (very bad very taboo)
(he, of course, continues doing human transmutation)
(despite the Trauma)
the second most important character - Endra, who has this nasty magical parasite slowly eating away at his body and mind, and his only hope at a cure is... human transmutation
you can see where this is going
anyway so that's the Past timeline - Quil trying to figure out what's going on with Endra's body and finding a way to fix it
(this is also the Romance timeline lol)
we also have the Present timeline
and that starts with Quil getting revived a year after his death in the country he'd gotten exiled from
:0!
(that's literally the first chapter so it's not a spoiler lol)
anyway he gets offered a Deal - help his ex-mentor with her project that could potentially save magic, and in exchange he'd get amnesty
the issue? he really, really hates his ex-mentor
and he would have really, really preferred to stay dead
this whole magic dying thing is Not his problem, either lol
counter issue? the project concerns the same magic parasite that Endra had (has?), so it could put him in danger, and Quil quite literally would die again before he let that happen, so.
he agrees
(so that he could sabotage it lol)
but also! Quil doesn't know what happened with Endra post his death, so that's something he works on figuring out as well
(he gets far more questions than answers. where IS this guy)
anywayyy that's the gist of the story
now for the lightning round
this would be for you if any of this intrigues you:
highly questionable academic and medical ethics
characters forsaking morality to get what they want and losing sight of what truly matters
So Much Interpersonal Drama
no physical fights - a Lot of verbal fights
dealing with the horrors of resurrection
dealing with the horrors of facing your loved ones after they'd mourned you for a year
a cast of eccentric scientists
an obsessive, codependent queer romance between people who don't know how the other looks like
a lot of fucked up queer characters in general
an incredibly spiteful trans protagonist who just wants to be left the fuck alone but everyone insists on dragging him into their shit, so instead he's gonna Make them leave him alone
everyone wanting you to live apart from You
magic biology! magic chemistry! magic science! nerd shit!
anyway oof idk if this helps but omggg is it hard to explain a fantasy story quickly ahaha....
(this is the general tag for this wip so u can check out more stuff about it that's explained in a more cohesive manner lol)
did. did other people actually do that sort of thing as teenagers? cause tbh most of my teenage nights were spent pretty quietly in my bedroom. where did y'all find people to kiss cause I never had access to them 😣
i had the distinct pleasure and nightmare of growing up with 00’s emo drama kids who raved a lot which is a deadly combo when it comes to cuddling and making out and being bisexual. they were an extremely sexually liberated group of people who experimented with each other because it felt like a very safe insular group, but also at the cost of hella drama all the time constantly (i will also hand it over to the band kids that band was like this but 100x more sex and 1000x more dramatic). we used to play lap tag which is where you sit in a circle with pairs of two (one sitting between the other one’s legs) and one single person who would call out two people’s names and those two people would try to get to the single person first while the person they’re paired up with wrestled them to prevent them from getting there, it was a good way to get out a lot of sexual frustration and also deal with any interpersonal drama because you could just wrestle your fucking friends and hold them down to the ground while you both panted and grunted in each other’s faces.
I WILL SAY i was a very sheltered kid with really strict parents (they loosened up a lot when i turned 16) so i did a lot of observing rather than participating (that kiss with my friend’s sister was, like, my first and only kiss in high school), it really took me until the first year of college to finally make out and hook up with friends, but prior to that did make quite a few sex pacts with friends of which only one happened (can’t take my eyes off you played on the radio while we were in the car and we were like OOPS THAT’S THE SONG WE CHOSE). i was a very horny teenager and from 16 until i lost my virginity i had “lose virginity” as my one and only new years resolution every year so do not worry i spent a whole lot of time looking for kissies and not getting kissies as a teenager, i was so desperate for kissies in fact that i was like PLEASE MAKE SEX PACTS WITH ME PLEASE I NEED THIS.
tagged by @recentadultburnout. What are my fave top 9 shows in no particular order. I finally have time to do this since I'm finally not homeless.
1. Gintama!!!
Whenever I'm feeling down I just watch this show. It does it's comedy really well. My favorite arcs are the lottery win arc and the reunion/kuroko no basuke parody mini-arc.
2. Doraemon
. . . Don't judge me! It's the first comic book collection I owned since it's relatively cheap. I still remember sobbing to the volume 6 ending when I was in 4rth grade. I thought it was the angstiest shit. Also my introduction to Japanese folktales.
3. Bad Buddy
Recent addition. Just something about the family dynamics that makes me writhe in an unpleasant personal way. 11/10 would torture myself thinking of Pran's family dynamics.
4 and 5. Julie and the Phantoms/My School President
This list makes makes me look 12 doesn't it? Ah who cares! I love a good musical. Especially a classic highschool teen as a protaganist. Musically, I like My School President's OST better but I really really love Julie. (Also both of these won't get a season 2).
6. Bocchi the Rock
A recent addition! . . . And another high school musical. I love fluff, friendships, interpersonal, and internal conflicts. My love for musicals like fulfills my need for real life friends who are attentive to your needs and wants and is there when you need them.
7. Oh No! Here Comes Trouble!
Anyone remember the time when Taiwanese dramas were all the rage back in early to late 2000's in Asia? Taiwan came in clutch and showed us how great they are at acting, writing, and nuance. Sobbed myself to the point of dehydration during the John Doe arc. I really like dramas with a slice of life-ish feel to it.
8. Avatar: The Last Airbender
I spend too much of my idle time arguing the pros and cons of different elements as if I can actually become a bender. So far I settled on earth as my element. It's just so fun. I hope there's an atla interest revival every 5 years.
9. Good Omens
One of my forever fandoms. I have a copy of the book that looks like shit but that's only because it is so loved. Everytime I crack it open, intending to only read the first few pages I end up nearly halfway to rereading it. And the tv live adaptation was so good. It's like Aziraphale and Crowley walked off the fandom's collective imagination and into the screen. I hope we get season 3 and I hope it's smooth sailing. I always wanted to write something for this fandom but watching the television made me realize British English is a whole 'nother beast and I'd rather not make a fool of myself.
Watched Mikey and Nickey (1976) with @jaimehwatson to check out influences from Goncharov (1973)...here are my notes!
Clock motif going strong in this film for SURE. I'm not sure it has quite the urgency of "the trouble is you think you have time" but features more of a looking back / loss of the memories that shaped you / holding on to what little you have of that.
The good news is it's as gay as advertised. The bad news (or good news if that's what you want!) is the gay is incredibly toxic. Nicky is such a shit guy that by the end I was rooting for a convenience store clerk to shoot him and be done with it.
There's a ton of subtle stuff being done with regret and familial relationships. In addition to the gay, this is a film about when the person who knows you most in the world (and perhaps you love most in the world) is also a no good piece of shit, and how hard that is. Also tbh if you zoom out for a minute Mikey is kinda no picnic himself, but that adds to the charm.
The ending scene fucks so much and the scene before it does a ton of narrative work. Definitely recommend this film especially if you like well paced interpersonal drama and a good grounding in realistic dialogue. Content warnings for some quite uncomfortable treatment of women servicing the purpose of telling you the lead guys just suck a whole lot.
The film is free to watch on YouTube, just search Mikey and Nicky. For after works this fix it fic from the tag is pitch perfect and this canon outtake hits the right notes for me.
15 Question Tag Game | OC Edition
I was tagged by beloved @handahbear to answer those questions about my OC, my darlingest Camille Rohan from my fic Three Hundred Years of Longing, and I haven't given love to my girl in too long a while so there we go!
Rules: answer the questions below as yourself and/or your OC. (I'd also add that you make your own post).
1. Are they named after anyone?
She is not named after anyone first name-wise, but her lastname IS the name of her village, Rohan, which in an actual place in Brittany, France!
2. When was the last time they cried?
In fic, I'd say that's after the whole "this can't happen" debacle with Morpheus, after he disappears on her in the heat of the moment
3. Do they have kids?
No, she purposefully does not have children, once because she could not stomach having one with her husband, and later because not aging also implies that a potential child would live and die in front of her eyes, which is not a very enticing concept
4. Do they use sarcasm?
When stressed and annoyed, but sparingly enough that it burns when she does decide to be sarcastic. It's mainly a sign she's losing a bit of control
5. What’s the first thing they notice about people?
Clothes and accessories. This used to be a big indicator of someone's background in the past, and gave a lot of intel about them. You could, most of the time, judge a book by its cover, and it's a skill she retains today, though it's a little less telling nowadays
6. What’s their eye color?
Deep deep brown
7. Scary movies or happy endings?
More of a biopic / period drama / fantasy enthusiast, really
8. Any special talents?
Nothing she would call special. She's very good at blending in in many settings though, and making people feel comfortable.
9. Where were they born?
Family farm, in Rohan, Brittany, France, in the year of our lord 1719!
10. What are their hobbies?
Gardening and flower arranging are big ones even though she doesn't do it often, she still enjoys it. Fashion and fashion history is also very interesting to her. She won't sew anything, and stays away from any needle work though.
11. Do you have any pets?
She doesn't have any pets currently, but one of those very fluffy cats would suit her. She mainly doesn't have one because she thinks she's far too busy to take care of one properly
12. What sports do they play/have they played?
Camille's good at racket sports, like badminton, tennis or squash. Squash is especially relaxing if she plays alone, because it's strangely meditative.
13. How tall are they?
About five foot seven, so around 1.73m
14. Favorite subject in school?
Never went to school because schooling was not mandatory for girls of her social class at the time! She did learn to read, which was about the extent of her schooling. History would be her favourite by far, to understand how the world shifted and continues to change
15. Dream job?
She is pretty happy in her current job because she doesn't have to run so many things in her business anymore, and charity work and philanthropy keeps her busy. Something in diplomacy would be nice, because she's rather good with negociation and interpersonal relations, but that would be way too public and thus dangerously exposed. But who's to say she couldn't do that in an... other... realm... 👀
I'm not tagging anyone because I'm not familiar enough with yall's OC, but feel free to answer those questions for yourself, or your OC!
is hallows end a whole town of spooky supernatural stuff, or is everyone just completely oblivious to butch and bug's weirdness?
Its the entire town! Jake is the odd one out as a normal human guy and he honestly stands out like a sore thumb lmao
You can go through my hallows end tag to find more info, I just went through and retagged some old posts that were missing it, but here's a pretty basic run down
Basically it's like if you threw every halloween aesthetic into one town that also had no form of government and no way to ever leave. You'll find anything from monster high type monsters to nightmare before christmas aesthetics to classic monster movies and horror movie villains. It is the platonic ideal of halloween. Even the way buildings work was semi inspired by spirit halloweens lmao
A lot of interpersonal drama comes from clashing of specific genres (kids halloween vibes vs slasher vibes vs classic Dracula vibes), which are broadly seperated into old town and new town by locals. Old town being the more classic grimdark, gothic, serious halloween vibes (classic slashers, tim burton aesthetics, etc) while new town is the more neon bright candy corn and jack o lanterns vibes (monster high is the best example aesthetics wise plus how they treat their monsters). It's mostly just a way for me personally to talk about the two general groups within the world and doesn't actually matter too much in canon. Butch counts as old town and Bug is new town
MORE MUTUALS (if you wanna)
@quiescent-trolls Kurt!!!! I have gone on at awoke length about them multiple times,, but they're seriously super sweet and easy going. Another person who's really go with the flow but is very fun to joke around with!! I also wanna say their art is immaculate!! I really adore the designs they have and have made.. all really feels unique to them!! Has a certain flavor of sophistication and thought details in every one of them.. And I also think how Kurt plays their characters is very interesting too.. It's a certain way they speak.. Very.. Refined? Also has playful undertones! I don't think if you gave those characters to someone else, that they could play them the same way Kurt does
@miks-fantrolls Mik <3 Love dis guy. The times I've gotten to speak with them has been treasured dearly! Mik is super fun and pretty easy to bounce ideas off of. Not to mention the flavor of humor is right up my alley.. And Miks art?? Both music and drawn and writing? AWESOME. I genuinely didn't know that there were people in the community that did make music and Mik manages to encapsulate the topic or topics of choices really well in what they make. Very thought out! I also think Miks style is super striking and uses the angles/shapes to their advantage! I still adore that one Viktor piece a whole lot
@fnatrolls Aquaaaaa!!!! Man, aqua is super kind and also has some of the funniest lil quips. I haven't gotten to talk with aqua too much, but it's honestly pleasant to see them post + talk in the tags or in comments!! I want to say the way they bring their media to life and the world building that's been going on with their whole little crew? LOVE IT MAN.. I LIKE SEEING THE WHOLE INTERPERSONAL DRAMAS... LIKE SEEING THE TENSION.. The vocabulary Aqua has in their writing kinda reminds me of chases?? Like it's very thought out and sets the mood and builds a lot of fucking tension that makes me sit on the edge of my seat.. I also adore the way you do your portraits and sprites! A very somft style but the way you push yourself to kinda try some stuff out (pose.. hair length.. hair weight. clothes.. etc etc.) Is really inspiring!
BLOGTOBER 10/11/2022: MONKEY SHINES
MONKEY SHINES drives me crazy for the sole, stupid reason that for much of my life, I have been walking the earth assuming that it is a Stephen King adaptation. This is absolutely not true. I'm sure I just think this because of George Romero's frequent collaboration with King, and because its famous poster so has the bold, exaggerated look of pulp horror covers from the 1980s. MONKEY SHINES is adapted from a novel by British author Michael Stewart, but the screenplay is by Romero himself. It is entirely possible that by 1988, a lot of King's style and approach may have rubbed off on the director, so maybe I'm not completely crazy for harboring this delusion: it's got psychic powers, a domestic animal that goes berserk, and small town drama overlayed with outrageous sci-fi and horror elements. But still, it bugs me that I thought this. I should know better!
Tumblr media
MONKEY SHINES is a deeply weird movie that passes for normal due its above-par production value, fine performances, name brand actors, and naturalistic dialog. Perhaps also in the heyday of writers like King and Michael Crichton, this wacky sci-fi thriller, about a paraplegic who forms a corrupting psychic link with his helper monkey, didn't seem so unusual. But inside of this mainstream thriller is a freaky psychodrama with which Freud would have had a field day.
A Capuchin helper monkey named Ella enters the life of law student Allan Mann (Jason Beghe) when an accident renders him paralyzed from the neck down. His days are brightened by Ella's surprising competence and seemingly personal affection for Allan—and by the arrival of her trainer Melanie (Kate McNeil), who also develops personal feelings for Allan. However, the deeper Ella and Allan's bond grows, the more Allan is given over to emotion, struggling to control his escalating rage. Eventually it comes out that Ella is a test subject for an experimental drug, and as the resulting mind meld with Allan makes him more animal than man, it also enables Ella to act out Allan's wrathful impulses.
Tumblr media
Somehow the monkey part of the movie isn't as bizarre as the interpersonal drama. When Allan becomes paralyzed, his whole existence turns into a power struggle with the women in his life. His plight begins when he is cuckolded by his own surgeon, and without his girlfriend around to help out, his mother Dorothy (Joyce Van Patten) forces her way into the house. Dorothy forms a sort of infantilizing tag team with the pious Nurse Maryanne (Christine Forrest, Romero's then-wife and frequent collaborator), from whom Melanie and Ella have to defend Allan. Where Maryanne is a castrating school marm type, Dorothy is inappropriately intimate with her son, insisting on bathing him and trying to drive out his new girlfriend. Melanie is mainly worried about Allan's increasing loss of civility…and also, perhaps, about Ella's increasing possessiveness. The monkey is firmly the other woman. There are male antagonists in the film—ambitious, inhumane scientists played by Stanley Tucci and Stephen Root—but they tend to take a back seat to Allan's conflicts with women. From his wheelchair-bound position, Allan needs to literally grow up, wresting power back from his nurse, putting his mother in her place, and choosing a mature relationship over the regressive, obsessive affair with the monkey.
Tumblr media
MONKEY SHINES may look like a regular mainstream movie of the period, but with all that going on, it has more in common with a neurotic exploitation movie like THE BABY, or SOMETIMES AUNT MARTHA DOES DREADFUL THINGS, or BUTCHER, BAKER, NIGHTMARE MAKER. This may not be the sort of place where you normally expect to find a bunch of psychoanalytic rumination, but it's sure in there, and it's part of what makes MONKEY SHINES so surprising. That, and the fact that it's not a Stephen King movie.
Tumblr media
But, there is one more thing about MONKEY SHINES the surprised me, personally. When I first started dating my husband some eleven years ago, we hit it off immediately, but we seemed like a pretty unlikely pair. I was (am) an inverted little horror ghoul, and he was almost aggressively normal: a friendly, handsome data specialist who liked beer, bikes, and coffee, and whose cultural tastes skewed just a little indie. I wasn't sure what I could have to offer such a person, but on our third date, he made an effort to reach across the aisle by informing me that when he was a kid, his mother's therapist was the former owner of one of the monkeys in MONKEY SHINES. We don't know if it was the star, Boo, or one of the lab extras (probably the latter), but this therapist had a framed lobby card mounted on his waiting room wall featuring the movie's shocking key art. My husband used to have to stare at it while he was waiting for his mother's appointment to end, and when he finally asked about it, he learned that the doctor used to have one of the movie's animal performers. When my then-new boyfriend told me this, I nearly fell out of my chair, and we've been laughing about it ever since.
