I am glad to know that The Master, of all people, is the one to give that definition of the Valyard.
"an amalgamation of the Doctor's darker sides, from between his twelfth and final incarnations"
Okay but it's the Master that said that.
That could be the most hilarious bullshit he's come up with that week and he's delighted that the Doctor somehow falls for it lol.

60 Years of Doctor Who Anniversary Marathon - C. Baker 8th Review
The Ultimate Foe - Novelization
Tumblr media
I won't lie, The Ultimate Foe is my favorite Sixth Doctor story on tv, so I was really excited to get this one as the randomizer's novelization pick.
What a disappointment.
Let's get one thing out of the way, unlike most of the fandom, I have nothing against Pip and Jane Baker. I've enjoyed all of their episodes for Doctor Who in some manner. But their prose... oh heavens, their prose.
Talk about trying too hard!
I never read anything that simultaneously both described too much and too little at once. The purple prose goes to great lengths to give details of the setting and yet you never get a feeling of placement; no grounding to which your mind's eye can conjure up the scenery for yourself.
The Bakers constantly interrupt the action to tell us what everyone is thinking, over explaining motivations, but fail to actually flesh out the plot and provide a base motive for the main villain.
And here's the really mind boggling part, despite only being a two parter originally and despite the fact that this novel has double the chapters a normal target book would have, the adaptation fails to actually add anything to the story.
In fact they even remove the scene of the Doctor finding out about Peri's fate, but still have the Master giving that explanation to Mel and the court.
Like why? Just why?
Shouldn't the Master be giving that information to the Doctor directly in order to create more conflict between the Hero and the Time Lords? Don't you remove the emotional drama that way? Why even bring Peri up at all then?
The only addition/change that actually works is the epilogue that sees the Sixth Doctor dropping Mel off back where she came from in the timeline, which is then supposed to lead directly into Time and the Rani.
All in all I still love the actual televised story. The visuals are great, the surreal plot still hangs together, wrapping up what was a near impossible story arc, and the flowery dialogue works for the characters at least... but I'll be trying to stay away from any more Pip and Jane target novels in the future if I can.

David Tennant is absolutely becoming the Valyard, like, unexplained antagonist that was an incarnation of the doctor from "Between his twelfth and final regeneration" and now there's TWO DOCTORS? and not only that, one of them has a short (or long if you listen to the big finish stuff) history of fucking with fixed points in time and such? Fuuuuuck man, I am so scared for every single person at that dinner table with the 14th doctor .

Doctor Who headcannon: So David said his new Doctor is not the same as the 10th Doctor, right? So what if he's really someone else? Someone like The Valyard?!

“The Power of the Doctor” was everything I wanted “The Day of the Doctor” to be. We had Tegan and Ace as secondary companions. We had most of the surviving Classic Who Doctors appear. I got a little teary when Five and Tegan and Seven and Ace interacted even if it was holograms because I am of a certain age. The Master was peak Master by setting off a chain of events leading to his own destruction while teaming up with entities stronger than he was (”Rasputin” by Boney M was a nice additional touch). I liked that it touched on the fact the Doctor changes people’s lives and just kind of discards them. I’m glad that companions are starting to connect with each other because that could bode interesting things in future episodes.
I’m really curious about the regeneration at the end especially since it regenerated new clothing (which they are cowards for not putting him in Thirteen’s clothes (though it was nice to see Dhawan wear them)). I’m also curious why Gatwa is now the fifteenth incarnation and if this means we might see some kind of Valyard storyline, which I honestly wouldn’t mind.
I’m really looking forward to the sixtieth special and what that might bring us

Valyard
Born as the eldest twins to King Laufey and Queen Fárbauti, Býleistr and Helblindi were believed to be two souls split under the moon of the matron goddess Máni and the sun of the patron god Sol.
However, it was their eldest brother Býleistr that was Jotunheimr's promised King. A man of great sorcery and prowess, he would be Loki's mentor and most loved brother.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Helblindi was considered their great oracle, born under the Moon of Máni and considered their high priestess of the New Moon; an annual tradition celebrating good harvest, and the new year. She, for many, was reveared placed on a mantle of highest standards.
Loki was the youngest but was no more loved than the twins who held prestige and reverence. He was closest to his eldest brother. The two of them would hunt, spar, and learn magic together.
Helblindi prophesized Asgard's crusade against the 9 realms in order to unify them under Odin's iron fist. This forced their mounting tensions to its boiling point. Jotunheimr secretly prepared their armies for the impending assault.
Bylestr lead the army in its training and coordinated their stealth missions to gather Asgardian intelligence.
Loki had his own mission, he sought out magic and power. Sorcery was his ambition and weapon of choice. He like many of the other 9 realms wanted to stay independent. Odin proved time and again that he was a warlord; to unify under his laws and beliefs would strip away their peoples autonomy.
His travels were eye opening to him. Asgard's crusade was a glimpse into a greater threat an incursion that would rewrite the fabric of time and space.
Traveling through the 9 realms, Loki forged an alliance with the powerful midgardian sorceress, Morgan Le-Fey, along with a space pirate couple and the elven prince Forsetti. Their knowledge of magic and Yggdrasil's life force gave Loki the chance to infiltrate Asgard and cripple Odin's armies before they struck.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
War-Queen & The Elven King
Morgan Le-Fey was the sorceress supreme of the early 12th century. She was seen as a radical for her efforts to bring equality to women and pagan practitioners.
Her reign in Avalon was cut short by Odin's crusade, however, her influence set the foundation for many women's rights movements that followed.
The Star Gliders
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meiying was the captain of an all female tactical strike force. The Star Gliders, as she called them, went behind enemy lines to eliminate high profile threats. She and her crew joined Loki's mission to protect the 9 Realms from Odin's tyranny.

I’ve got some valyard/master propaganda
I feel like they are the obvious choice. I mean imagine your the master and you spend a good portion of your time chasing your greatest enemy/childhood best friend around the universe trying to get his attention (and it’s definitely not because you’re in love with him, why would anyone suggest that) but you two only ever fight because he disapproves of the fact they you’re evil, but then you find out there’s a version of him that’s evil too
Like it’s not even a question for me wether or not those two ever had a thing

"Favorite Doctor Survey" Update February 11th, 2023, ~9pm Eastern Standard Time:
Tumblr media
[ID: a screenshot of a pie chart which has a multitude of colors in sections, the largest being labeled with percentages of 23.3%, 16.3%, 11.6%, and two are labled 7% while the rest are not labeled. there is a list of Doctor Who incarnations off to the side with color coding which trails off. end ID]
So far, we have 43 votes, and right now, the 8th Doctor is in the lead with 10 votes, aka 23.3%!
I am extremely delighted with this fact, we need more people to appreciate the Eighth Doctor ~! For anyone who is unaware of it, the Eighth Doctor is not limited to just the 1997 TV movie and a few minutes in Power of the Doctor--
--oh no, this Bestest Boy Ever has not only over a hundred audio dramas (and counting!!) on Big Finish, but also at least 74 Novels to his interation! If you do not know the Eighth Doctor yet, now is your excuse to go watch his movie on the web archive and then dive into the world of Big Finish to experience his adventures with Charley! :D
*Ahem* So, onto the next "Favorite Doctor!"
To no-ones surprise, the Twelfth Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi is holding steady in second place, with 9 votes!
There's a slight error in the graph because I realized I'd forgotten to add his actor and year to the 12th doctor listing and the answers already submitted didn't get edited, so Peter Capaldi's 12th Doctor is not just the dark teal 16.3% you see above, but also the dark blue right underneath it which is the first 2 original votes before the updated info.
In 3rd place, appropriately enough, we have the Third Doctor, played by Jon Pertwee! He currently has 5 votes, aka 11.6%!
Everyone seems to love his dynamics with UNIT, being earthbound, and his fatherly/grandfatherly relationships with his companions-- not to mention his chemistry with The Master!
Tied for 4th place, we have the Sixth and Second Doctors, each with 3 votes, aka 7% !
One, Five, Nine, and Ten each have 2 votes,
Four, The Valyard, The Shalka!Doctor, Eleven, and Thirteen all have 1 vote each,
and so far we have two write-in answers: one vote for "The Lethian Campaign Assassin" (an extremely intriguing wiki article) and one vote for the Master!Doctor from Power of the Doctor :D
Let's keep those votes rolling in! I pretty much have no time limit on this poll lol, i'll just post periodically when there's a significant number of new votes or if someone else takes the lead!
In the meanwhile if you haven't taken the survey yet, here is the link to cast your vote:
And if you'd like to see what all the hype is about for the Eighth Doctor, here is a link to a gorgeous fan-made upscaling of the movie, which was posted to the archive by the uploader-- you can stream it from the archive (make sure you set it to 1080p and give it plenty of time to buffer!)
Or, even better, download the mkv video, and use VLC media player or a similar open source program so you can adjust the playback speed to around 96% for the proper pitch and speed!
When they were doing US to UK conversion they uh. lol they fucked up the framerate so to fix it the movie was sped up on release, so watching it without adjusting the playback speed will make everyone sound like chipmunks comparison to their normal voices, but can also cause some motion sickness from the weird, fast framerate
! So I highly reccomend downloading it so you can adjust the playback speed a custom amount! Oh, and don't forget to favorite to show the upscaler some love for their hard work, they made it into a beautiful masterpiece! [ it literally looks better than my physical dvd i bought years ago lol]
If you'd like to dip your toes into some other, slightly more obscure Doctors featured on this survey, I also have a link to the 4k Upscaling of "the Scream of the Shalka", an animated Doctor Who episode from 2003, which was never continued (on screen at least; it has one short story sequel written available online, "The Feast of the Stone"!
Scream of the Shalka, in 4k HD, again, thanks to fans taking the time to upscale things!
Scream of the Shalka short story sequel:
(please note for fellow Shinigami-Eyes users, there is no transphobia in the short story, the entire BBC website is now universally marked red in shinigami eyes)

Deaths Head
Bianca (Iris Wildthyme’s Valyard)
Lego Joker (from the Lego Batman Movie)

Does Father Kreiner count as they became a villain instead of starting out as one?
Director Thorn of the Department
Supreme Lead Lomax of the Korven and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and her Empire.
Omega
Rassilon
Does Zagreus count? Or would the only version of Zagreus which passes the rules be the one which is not inside of the Doctor and the TARDIS or can it just be the general Character of Zagreus across all of their appearances? If so Zagreus
Lord Foaming Sky
Thessalia if she counts.
The Countess of the Players
Sabbath Dei
Can I say the Emperor of the Needle?
The Trickster
Suzie Costello
The Mysterons (if not the Mysterons then the Myloki)
Death (Torchwood)
Death (VNA) (if she counts as a villain or a separate character from Death (Torchwood))
The Timewyrm
Time
The Dalek which very briefly appears unnamed in the EDA spin of Comic Miranda if you like I can send you a screen shot of its eye which is all we see.
The King of Beasts
The Yssgaroth (based on the assumption that it is a single entity and not many)
What Ever is inside the Homeworld’s sun
The Enemy (depending on interpretation of what the Enemy is)
The Great Black Eye
Whatever the Shadow Kin’s King is called in Class
The Statue of Liberty (it is a weeping angle)
The Dalek which meneced Barbara at the end of the first episode of the Daleks
The War King if they count
Ohhhh War Queen Romana if all the trying to kidnap the Doctor to make Compassion in to a breeding slave counts.
okay, look, I appreciate the enthusiasm but this is far too long a list for a mini tournament, get back to me with a cut down list, I'm sorry, I'm not going to put a number on it, but preferably serious prospects from Doctor Who specifically
