#the untold origins of the armed detective agency
Text
Dazai and Odasaku have a fascinating connection I never noticed before, their views on killing for justice.
Dazai Osamu's entrance exam
He looked far off into the distance. “The phrase ‘seeking justice’ is a weapon. Once it hurts the weak, it can no longer be a force of good. This justice the Azure King sought was what killed Sasaki.”
The untold origins of the armed detective agency
“Justice,” said the hit man. “I can understand killing for money or because you hated someone, but they’re killing for justice. I don’t want to get involved with a group like that. After they’re done killing for their justice, they’ll only continue to kill. They’ll just stop caring who they’re killing.”
It's very interesting that two characters who both have no issue with killing people and have killed hundreds themselves see the incredible danger of "killing for justice"
Killing for greed, killing for revenge, killing for boredom... all of these are personal things, they stay focused on the person who's doing the killing, but if you kill because you think it's right, then you will seek out more people to kill unendingly "Their religion is heresy", "Their whole country is evil", "They don't respect my authority" and soon even people who have done nothing wrong are killed because "they could be a threat later"
The moment you justify killing, you can never stop, there will always be more criminals who deserve to die, and soon it won't matter if they deserved it or not.

The scene where Fukuzawa tells Ranpo he has an ability is comedic gold actually. Fukuzawa is lying like his life depends on it and Ranpo’s just like “?????” the entire time.

Light Novels Masterlist
Osamu Dazai’s Entrance Exam:
Doppo Kunikida is an idealist and a straitlaced detective at the Armed Detective Agency, an organization that takes on dangerous jobs even the police won't handle. Everything in his life is going just as he's planned...until one day, he's paired up with the agency's newest hire: a suspicious, eccentric, suicide-obsessed man named Osamu Dazai. Their first case together turns out to be far more complicated than Kunikida anticipated — and it looks like the detective agency's sworn enemy, the Port Mafia, is somehow involved, too!
Set two years before the events of the manga series, this is the tale of how two seemingly incompatible personalities end up forming the partnership that has made them one of Yokohama's top detective duos.

Osamu Dazai And The Dark Era:
Before joining the Armed Detective Agency, Osamu Dazai was the youngest executive with the Port Mafia, the most notorious underground crime syndicate in all of Yokohama. When one of their colleagues suddenly goes missing, Dazai and fellow Port Mafia member Sakunosuke Oda are tasked with conducting an investigation… and at last, the reason why Dazai parted ways with the Port Mafia is revealed!

The Untold Origins Of The Armed Detective Agency:
Over a decade before the events of the manga series, a chance encounter leads professional bodyguard Yukichi Fukuzawa to begrudgingly take an arrogant boy genius named Ranpo Edogawa under his wing. Their first job brings them to a local theater on high alert after receiving a bizarre death threat — a challenge that will require both Ranpo's brains and Fukuzawa's experience. The aftermath spurs Fukuzawa to establish the Armed Detective Agency, an organization that takes on dangerous jobs even the police won't handle!
Plus, get a glimpse of the agency the night before Atsushi Nakajima joined the team!

55 Minutes:
The Armed Detective Agency's latest case brings them to a strange island off the coast of Yokohama called ‘Standard Island,’ but what awaits them turns out to be far more complicated than expected: a bomb, time travel, a mysterious skill user named H.G. Wells... Will this incident spell the end of Yokohama itself?!
Disclaimer -
Dead Apple:
Power users around the world are suddenly committing suicide one after another, in all cases after a strange fog appears at the scene. At a request from Ango Sakaguchi, the Armed Detective Agency head out to investigate Tatsuhiko Shibusawa, a power user who calls himself ‘Collector,’ and a man suspected of being tied to the incident.

Beast:
What if the Port Mafia's Hellhound, Ryunosuke Akutagawa, had joined the Armed Detective Agency? Likewise, what if Atsushi Nakajima belonged to the Port Mafia? In the parallel world of Bungo Stray Dogs: Beast, fledgling detective Akutagawa's desperate mission to rescue his younger sister from the Port Mafia's clutches brings him face-to-face with the organization's fearsome White Reaper…a.k.a. Atsushi Nakajima. What does fate have in store for the two beasts in this alternate tale of darkness versus light…?
Disclaimer -
Dazai, Chuuya, Age Fifteen:
Not long after Ōgai Mori takes the reins of the Port Mafia, his accomplice Osamu Dazai has a dreadful run in with Chūya Nakahara, a boy known as the Sheep King who is capable of manipulating gravity. But when strange rumors about the mysterious being Arahabaki start spreading throughout Yokohama, the duo must put aside their differences and get to the bottom of things.
Before they achieved infamy as the fearsome pairing Twin Dark, Dazai and Chūya were just boys. Was their first encounter a harbinger of hope, or an ill omen of things to come…?
Disclaimer -
Strombringer:
It's been roughly one year since Chūya Nakahara joined the Port Mafia, and he's got his sights set on an executive position. But as he makes plans to move up, a man by the name of Paul Verlaine—claiming to be his younger brother—appears and vows to assassinate everyone he cares about! Now, Chūya must team up with Adam, a European A.I. investigator, to stop this lunatic before the storm swallows Yokohama once again…
Disclaimer -
First of all, I really appreciate people who started following me because of these light novels, but I'll be honest. As it turned out my Wattpad gift this new year was them taking down my account because of these light novels, I'm scared that the same would happen if I would update them here as well, so I'm thinking not to risk this account as well, and would not continue to do so (Maybe), but just in case I change my mind...

Untold origins of The Armed Detective Agency Spoiler Warning!
Man, the light novels are WILD.
Kunikida spent sooo much effort just to get one over on Dazai. Like my mans, I think ur a little obsessed. Kuni like yes, I spend all this time and effort on him, no homo, ofc.
NAOMI!!!
Jun brought up the presidents dating life as a potential entrance exam problem Atsushi could solve, like buddy, I know you and Naomi got some weird shit going on but that's too big of an age gap. (I guess he could try to find the president a date, but idk)
And Dazai really wrote: "Fucking" as a potential idea.
Kenji! So wholesome, I love him. Also R.I.P. all those brave souls who challange him to an arm wrestinglg match.
Yosano, I love you. Awesome and sadistic as usual.
~
Then Fukuzawa wanted to yeet Ranpo into the ocean or dump him to a manhole.
Also Fuku's sass? Yes! He's so funny like: "Uh, Exuse me?" "I'm only 32 year old!"
And the vivid discriptions of his martial arts moves, I was NOT expecting that. I don't hate them, but I'm not exactly sure how to feel. 🤨🤔😳🌚 😏
Poor Ranpo, he's totaly oblivious. Idk if it would have been better for his furture coworkers if he stayed that way. I do kinda like his arogance though.
I'll update this as I continue to read.

LORE LORE WORLDBUILDING!
This is the type of stuff i Love reading in any fiction, the power struggles, and arguably the one between the Ministry of Justice and the Special Abilities Division is Just As Important as the one between the Agency and the Port Mafia. One can’t exist without the other, they’re in a constant loop. One for ungifted, the other for ability-users. They both use corruption to get what they want: for normal and for gifted people
Its all in the background yes, but you can even argue that the Special Abilities Division was created in response to the war and post-war paranoia presented from normal to gifted people. In Untold Origins the existence of Gifted People is kept hush-hush, one of the first chapters of BSd says that as a gifted, Atsushi would’ve struggled to find a job.

BSD canon
I realized this post wasn't going to fit in the comments lol @fishii28
When I think about all the different versions of canon, I just assume that it's all different timelines. So the differences between Dazai Osamu's Entrance Exam and the Azure Messenger arc of the anime can be explained by them being two different timelines. They're both still canon, but to timeline A and timeline B.
These won't be in chronological order, just the order they appear in the BSD wiki.
Light novels that are canon to each other:
LN #1 Osamu Dazai's Entrance Exam
LN #2 Osamu Dazai and the Dark Era
LN #3 The Untold Origins of the Detective Agency
LN #4 55 Minutes
LN #5 Dead Apple
LN #6 Dazai, Chuuya, Age 15
LN #8 Stormbringer
The Day I Picked Up Dazai
Kunikida and Katai's Brilliant Days
2. The Beast universe is canon to itself and is an AU of the original story. Basically Asagiri wrote fanfic of what would happen if Akutagawa was in the ADA and Atsushi was in the Port Mafia. These all have differences that separate them into different timelines of the same AU.
LN#7 Beast
Beast manga adaptation
Beast movie
3. BSD WAN! is also a separate canon that doesn't fit with any of the others.
WAN! manga
WAN! anime
4. The anthologies aren't canon, they're just fun oneshots written by other mangakas
5. The anime is all canon to itself (excluding WAN!)
S1
S2
S3
Dead Apple movie
S4
S5
6. The manga is another separate canon and doesn't have any differences within itself so it's fine to just read it in order
The thing to keep in mind is that it's all canon because BSD takes place in a multiverse. Chuuya's backstory in Stormbringer is really what happened, even in the anime and manga despite only being addressing in Stormbringer.
If that's not coherent I can try to explain it better

One thing that the first half of Untold Origins of the Armed Detective Agency really reiterates for me is that no one in that fucking agency knows a goddamn thing about anyone they work with.
Especially Kunikida. He doesn’t know anything about Dazai. He doesn’t know how the agency got founded. He doesn’t even know that Fukuzawa raised Ranpo. Tanizaki is also too afraid to find out any of this information.
At least Atsushi trauma dumps at job interviews I guess… so they all know more about him than they ever wanted to. But this is definitely why they’re all constantly side-eyeing him like “you weird, sad orphan…”
