The way that Percy looks at Annabeth when she admits to stealing Hermes keys 🥹
He’s so impressed. Not just because of her skills, but because she stole from one of the gods.
Annabeth is only just starting to break away from the unwavering adherence to the rules of respecting the gods. The first time we saw her do that was talking back to Hephaestus in Episode 5, when Percy was frozen in gold. He’s never seen her willingly do something that could be counted as disrespectful to the gods and he’s so proud of her for it.

Mafia!Jade Leech x Mafia!Reader
Link to part one, two, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve!
Notes and TW: Jade and Reader are finally properly interacting! For the whole chapter, too. This series will have mentions of blood, violence, crime (kidnapping, attempted assassination, extortion), and harassment, as one might expect from a mafia AU. Please enjoy!
Tumblr media
The night breeze sweeps over your skin when you step outside Azul’s mansion. The moon illuminates the world tonight, and you can easily see Jade’s car pull up to the driveway. He parks it perfectly, just like everything else he does, and comes to the front door with a smile.
“Looks like everything went well.”
He walks up the steps leading to the door, stopping just one step below you. Even then, his tall figure ensures he’s slightly above eye level. He zeroes in on something on your cheek.
“Indeed,” he says, raising a hand. His bare thumb swipes gently over your cheekbone. “Excuse me. You had something on your face.”
His thumb leaves your face with a hint of something red. Barry Moore’s blood. You must’ve stood too close while Floyd was having his fun.
“Thanks,” you say dismissively.
“No need to thank me. Were you the one who personally took care of the interrogation?”
He’s talking about the physical coercion. The violence. You shake your head.
“Floyd’s doing it right now.”
He lowers his eyes, rubbing the smidge of blood between his thumb and forefinger. The thoughtful pace of the action makes you wonder if he is satisfied with something.
“That’s good to hear.”
“Floyd said the opposite. He said he wanted me to draw blood.”
“Rest assured that he is more than happy to do it instead.” He reaches out for your hand. His bare fingers handle yours like they are made of porcelain. He studies them for the few seconds you allow before pulling your hand back. “You should never have to lift a finger. Just keep making others do your dirty work. There is no need for you to dirty your hands with the blood of filth.”
That implies there are things which are worthy for you to personally dirty your hands with. You choose not to think about it. Jade’s ambiguous wording is purposeful, a habit partially caused by his enjoyment of your tendency to overthink.
You look for a way to change the topic. “I see you’ve made sure to leave your gloves at her place.”
An important plot point that ensures they meet again. A trivial accessory that can easily be replaced, which (Y/N) washes and returns to him when she runs into him again. She will take great care in handwashing the white fabric, and she will keep it with her until she finds their owner. It’s an item created for the story. Because she is sweet, because she is kind, because she is the perfect person.
“Are you upset?” Jade’s eyes curve slightly in amusement. His fingers linger by your jaw. Not quite touching you, yet refusing to pull away. “You are stating an observation which does not need to be said. It feels as though you are searching for something to say.”
“No.” You push his hand away, your bare skin touching briefly. The body temperature of merfolk is naturally lower than humans, and on this warm summer night, he stays as cool as ever against your warm palm. “Maybe you’re just not that good at talking.”
He chuckles, a low timbre that slides through the air like silk. “I will work to meet your expectations, then.”
“The conversation better not be this stilted when you’re talking to (Y/N).”
“I assure you it is not.”
“Of course.” You turn to the door, its frosted windows casting a warm glow over your face from the lights inside. “She’s basically destined to be your partner, so there’s no way you wouldn’t get along.”
“We get along.”
“I know, that’s what I just said.”
“That is not what I meant.” His hand settles on the doorknob before yours. With his chest to your back and one arm reaching around your left side, you are suddenly reminded of how large he is. Towering over you, his body surrounds you on all sides except the front, an enveloping embrace where no parts of you touch. “I was referring to you and I. Ah, unless—” his voice suddenly drips with self-pity and his arm falls away “—I was the only one who felt that way about my dear friend?”
You stare at him. A few seconds pass, and you dissolve into quiet laughter. “Right, right. Feel more sorry for yourself, maybe you’ll start crying.”
“Would you like to see it?” Jade leans into your peripheral vision, a veiled grin tugging at his lips. “I can certainly try. It would come at a price.”
“I’m not that interested, then.” You push open the door. “Let’s go. Azul’s waiting for you to use your Signature Spell on the captive.”
“Ah, the captive.” He follows you into the house. In the sudden flood of light, he seems less intense, more interested in fading into obscurity to any onlookers. Azul’s home has a few trusted employees to keep it spotless. But no matter how trusted they are, Jade dislikes being perceived unless it amuses him. He manages to do it even while being six feet tall. “Where is he being held?”
“In a dingy room in the basement, tied to a chair with a single light overhead.”
Jade chuckles into his hand. “Azul has always had a flair for dramatics.”
“I think even the kidnapping was a bit clichéd. We should’ve just had you use your Signature Spell on him after you beat him up in the alley.”
“It wasn’t mentioned in the story. And I know how much you love to follow the story to the letter.” You don’t need to turn around to know that he has a smarmy smile on his face. “After all, you asked me to lead on your good friend just to stay true to it.”
He is prodding you to observe your reaction. To see if you will get angry, or pensive, or hesitant. You look straight ahead and start descending into the basement.
“My friendship with her or your parents’ life. It’s a pretty clear choice.”
“I am sure they will be happy to hear that once they awaken.”
A pause. The words hang on the tip of your tongue. They are hard to swallow, but also hard to spit out. The latter becomes easier when you don’t think about it.
“Who’s to say? You might end up falling for her eventually.” Every step you take down the stairs feels heavy. “So far, everything in the story has come true. So maybe you really will become madly in love with her.”
Jade’s silence seems to weigh down your steps more than whatever feelings are on your mind. You wonder what expression he has on his face, but you don’t want to turn around—whether it’s for your pride or for dread of seeing something you don’t want to see, you aren’t sure.
“Do you really believe that manuscript is a reflection of things that will certainly come to pass?”
He’s dodging the topic. You hate when he’s like this. He doesn’t want to give a straight answer, so he gives a tangentially related statement or question that can be interpreted to be one. Something that gives a vague answer, but can shield him with deniability when confronted. Even so, his question is not one that can easily be ignored, so it’s hard to stick to your original train of thought.
“I don’t know. It could be a prophecy of sorts. It could be someone from the future writing down what they know happened in the past. It could even be something like a magic pen that will turn anything written with it into reality. But powers like those are, well, powerful, and not easy to find. I don’t understand why it would be used on a silly, badly written love story like that.”
“Could it be that you’re jealous?”
You furrow your brows and spin around to give him a withering glare. His smile is the same as always, but you think it reminds you of when a cat toys with a mouse.
“Don’t smile like that. It’s unpleasant.”
“I’ll do my best to meet your expectations.” He won’t. You’ve already resigned yourself to that.
“Whatever. Besides, what part of anything I just said makes you think I’m jealous?”
“It isn’t what you just said.” Your shoes clack against the floor of the basement, followed by the quiet taps of his footsteps. “You have seemed rather . . . Restless since the story started.”
“There’s a lot to think about.”
“Am I one of those things?”
“You’re the male lead. You’re one of the major things I think about.”
“I see.”
You take a glance behind you again. His smile seems less predatory now, more pleased. Is he looking for attention? Right after you internally commented on his tendency of fading into the background, too.
The truth is not something like jealousy. Or maybe it is, but in a different way than what Jade is insinuating. Something feels missing now that you know you will not talk to (Y/N) again, at least until the story ends. The story takes place from her perspective, and since it never mentions Friend A after the inciting incident, you cannot appear before her for the duration of the plot. You cannot talk to her about the sweets you ate or the cafés you’ve found. You cannot sit in her apartment and talk about nothing in particular. It’s true that you will be very busy for the next while, but you still need to get used to the sudden absence of a good friend even while she is within reach.
You can deal with it, though. Over the years of working with the mafia, you have lost your fair share of friends. At least you know you can still talk to (Y/N) when she gets her happily ever after.

s'ébahir
Gojo x reader Modern, College AU!
s'ébahir - (French; to be amazed, to be astounded, dumbstruck)
2k smth words
He always strolled into lab characteristically late. You envied his nonchalance, his stance of ease in which he would stroll into the lab and set his stuff down when the professor just began their lecture on the hazards you'd be dealing with today.
annoying
You were always early. Anxiously waiting for your seat so you could prep early and leave before the rest of your classmates.
The bastard was also, unfortunately, handsome. Devilishly tall with a lean build and white hair, he was a stark contrast against some of his fellow students.
"--it is IMPERTINENT that you wear your goggles the entire time during this lab. We will be dealing with concentrated hydrochloric acid--"
you droned out your teachers voice. Unlike some of the other students, you had read the lab manual the night before and watched a video on how to do everything correctly.
This wasn't your first rodeo.
Somewhat bored, your eyes drifted back to the male that was sitting across from you. The fume hood that was connected to your countertop obscured the view a bit, but you caught a glimpse of him leaning against it, head in his hand.
He seemed as bored as you were.
"Alright, lets begin!" An enthusiastic clap sounded.
You had noticed his hesitancy with the lab goggles each time. He chronically wore sunglasses indoors during class and around campus. But when it came to lab, your prof made no exceptions.
Tugging the too tight safety goggles over your eyes, you managed a glance to find startling azure ones starting back at you.
You smiled politely and turned to grab your equipment.
"Hey."
You glanced up at Gojo, who was leaning against your bench.
"What did you need this time?"
Gojo had a knack of stealing your shit since his tended to be always (coincidentally) misplaced or lost. He blamed Geto for it.
"Do you have an extra ring clamp? Geto took mine," he shrugged nonchalantly. You nodded and handed over the item, focusing back on your work.
"Do you know how much your putting in?" he leaned in closer, tapping your graduated cylinder with his hand.
"I can read fine enough Gojo."
"Are you sure? The lab manual said 12 mls...you wrote down 21"
Shit. He was right, you must've copied it down wrong last night.
It was slightly infuriating how sharp he actually was. He had such a lazy demeanor it was easy to forget he tended to be top of the class.
"Ugh, I don't remember how much I've put in it already." you ran your hand through your hair, frustrated as you eye the clock.
The liquid in the flask turned a murky brown, fizzing slightly.
Ok yeah.. that is definitely not what happened in the video.
Gojo leaned over and swirled the flask in his hands, the murky liquid turning darker.
"Yeah, you put way too much into that," he blew out a low whistle.
Fuck. You're going to have to redo the entire thing. Biting your lip, you glance at the clock again.
I'm not going to get a chance to study before my lecture exam...
"Oh come on, just partner up with me," he smirks, nodding towards his bench. "I'll even let you do all the work."
You scowled. You hated partnering up, you ended up doing everything anyway. But you were quick about it on your own.
Looking back towards your failure and the clock, you realize you don't have much of a choice.
"Fine," you nod and walk to his bench. "But lets be as quick as we can."
He grinned.
-
"Alright, now we just have wait."
The worst part about science, you argued, is the "waiting" portion of it.
Some experiments take time. This unfortunately, was one of them.
"We work together pretty well," he leaned forward. "One could almost say we have....chemistry."
You cringed as he laughed at your response. "Hilarious, Gojo."
A shadow loomed over you. "Did he get you with some of his science lines?"
You smiled. Contrary to Gojo, Geto was more composed and studious as you were. You both talked often, considering you had a lot of the same classes as him.
"It was too good not to!" Gojo replied, spinning around in his chair.
You rolled your eyes, glancing back towards your glassware. Geto was easy to be around, he was calm and didn't try to get a rise out of you like his white-haired friend did. He made you a little more nervous, he was kind of unpredictable. Not to mention pretty.
"I think its done," you pointed to the bubbling flask.
Geto nodded to you, "good luck then."
You smiled back at him, pretending not to feel your blue-eyed partner staring at you.
-
Gojo
He doesn't know why he wants to fluster you. Or why it grates on his nerves that you can so easily smile at Geto when you seemed to struggle around him.
Technically, your experiment earlier would have been salvageable. Yeah, your yield would've been low, but he jumped at the chance to work with you without thinking.
He meant what he said earlier, you both worked surprisingly well together.
Taking the flask from you, he began to dry as you washed everything up. He didn't quite want to be done just yet, labs weren't his favorite part but he found himself looking forward to this one.
Not that it had anything to do with you.
Geto always argued that he was "just into you" but he didn't agree. He just thought your intellect was interesting, that's all.
It had nothing to do with the way you always showed up with enthusiasm, drawing him in as he watched you be engaged with your work. He couldn't wonder why--
"Gojo?" Bright eyes looked up at him as you waved the last Erlenmeyer in front of his face. "Hey, we're done."
Startled, he nearly dropped the thing he was drying. "Right, yeah. See you around, then."
He cursed himself slightly for his cowardice.
"Well, actually, did you want to finish up the lab report quick ? We have plenty of time," you looked at your phone as you said it.
Realistically, he would say no. He doesn't finish his reports until the last minute anyway.
But to get the chance to fluster you more.
Ah, hell. Why not?
"yeah, we can do that." He shrugged nonchalantly. Geto met his gaze across the lab and quirked an eyebrow at him.
He bared his teeth in response.
"Should we go to the library then?" Your voice cut through his thoughts, catching him unawares as you shoved the paper into his hands.
He nodded quickly, fishing around in his backpack for his glasses as he ripped off the goggles still glued to his face.
He motioned for you to go first, following behind and out of the lab as he let you pick where to sit down.
You picked a spot across the campus cafe, he inwardly wondered if you came to study here frequently. Th atmosphere was quiet and there was a lot of natural light that made it easy to relax and focus.
Setting down his bookbag, he tuned into your ramblings about the lab.
"What do you think about the yield? I think we could base our conclusions around it. Maybe even mention the slight color difference when we added the--"
Your drive to finish this was commendable. He was put off a bit by how you didn't seem affected by him at all. Most people saw his sunglasses as odd, and honestly the general consensus was that he was constantly nursing a hangover.
There was a lapse of silence and you both typed away on your laptops, broken up by only you saying:
"Why do you wear those sunglasses all the time?"
Eyebrows raised, "Secret." The corner of his lip turned up.
"Is it because of your eyes?"
His smirk fell. It wasn't so much that he cared about how his eyes seemed to freak people out. It was more about how sensitive they were to light and packed spaces. He used to get frequent headaches because of it, but the glasses thwart off the edge enough now.
He merely shrugged in response to your question. "The light bugs my eyes sometimes."
You nodded back in understanding, "Ugh, tell me about it. I used to get migraines from the fluorescent lights when I was younger."
He stiffened. Such a minute detail, but he couldn't help but consider the gesture as an act of empathy. Seeing past his usual charm.
You both fell back into silence, quickly finishing your report and hoping off of the chair you inhabited just moments ago.
He felt his heart pound as you smiled up at him, watching your every movement as you threw your bag over your shoulder and made to leave.
"We finished that quick! Good luck on this exam later, not that you'll need it."
His arm burned from where you patted his shoulder as you strode out of the cafe lounge and towards some other study zone. Glancing down at it, he almost expected it to catch fire.
Eyes flicking up over his glasses, he looked down the hallway you had left.
Damn.
He might just have to make your lab fail next time.

Chapter 20: The Proposal (Part 2)
“Oh my God, please don’t go into any more detail.” I whine and look down, covering my eyes with my hand.
“And then you wrapped your legs around me…”
“Ben.”
“It was like…what was the phrase you used about all the women hanging off of me?”
“Don’t!”
“Clinging to me like a barnacle. That’s it.” I peek through my fingers at him. He’s moved closer and he’s full-on grinning right now. “Apt description.” Fucking asshole. “And don’t get me started on the belt.” He makes a little tutting sound with his tongue. Approving or admonishing, I’m not sure. But of course, it’s all a joke to him anyway. “You made quick work of it.”
“Please,” I’m genuinely begging now, my mouth dry with utter mortification. “It was a stressful night, and I was tired, and you were being nice for the first time in your life -”
“Something tells me you don’t go around climbing men because they’re suddenly nice to you, Rey.”
Or start from the beginning…
Synopsis: Rey has lived in Jakku, a small shore town known for its quiet beaches and even quieter winters, for her entire life. After a seemingly harmless date with a stranger goes terribly awry, Rey will learn they have a lot more in common than their undeniable attraction to one another. A month later, a twist in fate, a winter rental and a rescue dog will bring them closer together than ever.
