Things I need in a currently nonexistent raven cycle adaptation: (Gansey)
1. The middle part flow haircut but like longer because that is the “not like other girls” of the preppy boy haircuts and Gansey is not like other preppy boys
2. Ik he wears all those brightly colored polos but keep in mind, he’s been everywhere, he probably has so many souvenir sweatshirts—picture extremely tired Gansey, just threw on an oversized crew neck from like Wales or Singapore or some other place he’s been LIKE—and you know he wears those so people ask him about all the places he’s been
3. He has the newest iPhone. We love that he likes vintage things but a block of a phone is not going to help him find Glendower the way an iPhone 37 and a half will. Plus, imagine Adam’s face in every scene when Gansey has to check the time with a thousand dollars worth of capitalist propaganda
4. Acting wise, he is always looking up. At the stars, at the trees, at the future. The most prominent expression on his face is WONDER. I can envision so many scenes where he just turns to Blue or Adam with this wide-eyed excitement, and suddenly everyone else in the room is excited too. Just AAAH
5. Adam says, “Ronan and Gansey were laughing at a joke where the rest of the world was the punch line” when he’s talking about how cruel he thought Gansey was. I want a flashback of Gansey and Ronan being those best friends at the back table that came in late because they couldn’t stop giggling and now they won’t stop smirking at the teacher, and then Adam’s just at the front trying not to break his pencil in half
6. Ok imagine this: close up of Gansey, hands behind his head, glasses half sliding down his face. He looks asleep, but he definitely isn’t. The screen is relatively dark, tinted blue. He has AirPods in, and we hear muffled Phoebe Bridgers or Lizzy McAlpine or some other sad, wistful female artist BC GANSEY IS A SAD WISTFUL FEMALE ARTIST ON THE INSIDE. The music starts crescendoing, then there’s this loud screech over top of everything and Gansey’s eyes snap open and then we’re catapulted into the “what fresh hell is this?” scene
Um. *clears throat* Anyway.

Actually I'm slightly, lowkey glad the TRC TV show didn't happen, cause the more I think about it, there's like... no way I would have liked anything they would have done

the list of scenes i would very much like to see in a raven cycle tv series despite not wanting a book to screen adaptation grows to include henry pulling up to mountain view high in a ferrari to blue’s absolute horror and henry’s great enjoyment. henry then allowing, nay encouraging & Counting Down, her to publicly call him a bastard to maintain her mount high status as a anti-aglionby anti-establishment feminist who don’t need no man. only to have gansey apologetically pull up literal Moments later in his loud bright orange camero politely asking her to come with him that she just can’t say no to, which totally ruins her status as said anti-aglionby anti-establishment feminist who don’t need no man and instead labeling her a massive hypocrite. like i would pay good money to see that scene. it’s just so. perfectly cinematic.

if I won a billion dollars in the lottery one or the things I would do is make a tv show adaptation of xforce 1991 marketed towards like… the raven cycle Richard siken stranger things transmascs but slightly to the left. boys who realized they want to be poets before they realized they want to be boys. julio richter would have will byers lil homie gayass energy but he’d dress like a punk. remember the detail that his dad was like you gotta punch people when you grow up but he just wanted to read books. Sensitive gayboy energy. I’d find some incredible nobody indigenous Mexican actor to play him and then cast the guy who played jason blossom as shatterstar. It doesn’t even matter if he can’t act when someone can’t act their character just reads as autistic and. Well

For the book meme, 21 & 45 please!
21. The book(s) on your school reading list you actually enjoyed.
I'm so sorry to be a nerd but I enjoyed so many things I read for class. We didn't read many novels in K-12 (lots of short stories, plays, and poems) but I enjoyed the classics like to kill a mockingbird and the great gatsby. (i did NOT enjoy a farewell to arms.) more recently i have been reading so many books for grad school so here are some that i would genuinely recommend to non-academic audiences:
floating coast by bathsheba demuth
our gigantic zoo by thomas lekan
fordlandia by greg grandin
empire of cotton by sven beckert
the nutmeg's curse by amitav ghosh
45. What book(s) would you sell your soul to get a TV or movie adaptation of?
i gotta be honest i am still a little sad that the raven cycle adaptation got squashed. i would have ate that shit up with a spoon. but truly when it comes down to it my dream tv adaptation would have to be robin hobb's farseer trilogy. but only if they did it right. only if they made burrich hot enough.

Raven Cycle fans? Still bitter the TV series was never green-lit? Well, whilst we wait for the rights to be picked up again, can I please introduce you to another YA adaptation which has dropped on Netflix, Lockwood & Co.!
It has lots of similar themes/ concepts to TRC including found family, the supernatural, ghosts, psychics, mortality, yearning for purpose/ambition, and tackling trauma/identity.
Also Gansey and Lockwood would be best friends. Blue and Lucy would also be best friends.
For your consideration:

just getting into the raven cycle over this summer and hearing that there were scrapped plans for a TV adaptation years ago, I didn’t know how to feel. We’re all sick of bad book to TV adaptations so I get that
But to hear that it was going to be directed by CATHERINE HARDWICKE??
Tumblr media
Catherine Hardwicke of the first Twilight movie?!?! Of the blue filter and small town with hidden fantasy undertones incredible vibes???? Of the insane soundtrack??? I’m in ruins. This shakes my worldview.

Combining the Six of Crows series with Shadow and Bone just feels forced and unnatural. They should have made the intuitive choice and combined Six of Crows with the Raven Cycle.
No no wait listen.
The Gangsey is looking for Glendower to find magic and understanding and get a wish. The Crows are looking because the bad guy paid them to.
Two found families go head to head. Watch Kaz and Gansey’s ridiculously different leadership styles render everything into satire by comparison. Gansey loves Kaz and endeavors to fix him. Kaz “hates” Gansey but finds his charm, wealth, and connections very useful. He therefore secretly and immediately endeavors to save him from dying (he discovers the secret in record time).
Ronan pretends to hate the Crows out of loyalty to Gansey, but Chainsaw loves them. Adam and Kaz constantly blackmail and threaten each other when the others aren’t looking. The girls all get along right away.
It’d be all the found family, all the slow burn of not being able to kiss the girl you love, all the contrast between hope and cynicism. All the murder birds!! This is the only TV adaptation of either I will accept.

Tbh idk if I could handle a Raven cycle adaptation unless I wrote it 😭 so here are some things I’d do as an (unqualified) aspiring filmmaker:
1. Film in Banner Elk and Wake Forest, North Carolina
Tumblr media
Like tell me this does not give you Henrietta vibes
2. Soundtrack with songs like Take Me Home, Country Roads by John Denver, Nightjar and the Nightingale by Roo Panes, The View Between Villages by Noah Kahan, etc etc
3. Idk how recognizable Duke campus is but
Tumblr media
Aglionby?
3. Score would have lots of acoustic guitars, a mix of like folk sounds and kind of lulling, plinking magical sounds, with a lot of rising, inspirational bits. In really intense scenes, really loud natural sounds like rain and wind rustling through trees and birdsong
4. You know when you’re outside, and you say something, and it echoes, but not really, it’s just that your voice is quieter than everything else because this is not your world, it belongs to the birds and the wind and the rain? THAT
5. Tons of focus on the idle scenes, like Noah and Blue running through Monmouth and messing stuff up, Gansey and Blue’s phone calls, Ronan street racing, Adam’s moments of thought, all things that you might cut if you were trying to focus on the plot but the plot of TRC is NOTHING without these scenes
6. That one scene in the Dream Thieves where Ronan is just sitting at the playground with Matthew, and it’s interrupted by Niall Lynch’s will. IMAGINE THAT AS A VOICEOVER just intercut with their conversation, or even as a rlly disjointed flashback
7. Adam Driver as Barrington Whelk
8. Theo James as the Gray Man
I’ll do a whole other one on characters but anyway those are my thoughts

TRC Actor AU
an AU where The Raven Cycle is adapted into a popular tv show
for the main five, there would be an open casting call to encourage new, unknown names to take on the roles and make the show feel more authentic
at least one of them would end up being English — my money's on Gansey's actor (and if he had a penny for every time someone on set mocked his accent, he would be richer than Gansey)
Gansey and Ronan's (half-Irish) actors would both have some acting experience with minor roles in some small British productions, but for Blue, Adam, and Noah's actors, they're completely new to being in front of the camera
Gansey's actor was able to pull off a convincing enough accent to get through auditions and snag the role, but after being cast he underwent vocal coaching to get Gansey's Ganseyness down to a T
he still messes up occasionally, and a fair chunk of the show's bloopers are dedicated to him accidentally saying the British pronunciation of a word and then softly cursing under his breath
he took up rowing to get Gansey's physique
he's overjoyed the Pig is a manual (stick shift) car, he can't drive automatics (and they freak him out)
the Pig is in such bad shape though there are countless bloopers of him stalling it
within the first week of being in Virginia pre-shooting, Gansey's actor gets heatstroke after severely underestimating the difference between British and American warm weather
every scene where anyone says yeehaw takes a god awful amount of time to film because Gansey's actor cracks up at it every time
by the time filming is wrapped up for season 1, Gansey's actor has gotten incredibly attached to the story and its characters — if he sheds a tear or two after filming the final scene, no one says a word about it (if the show made it to a fourth and final season he would be an absolute wreck when it came to saying his final goodbyes to it all)
Blue's actress was a huge fan of the books before the show, so when she heard about the open casting calls she travelled hours to audition — she didn't think she'd actually get the role and burst into tears when she found out
she has a little ley line tattoo on her wrist
she also helps out a lot in the costume department! the designers found out about her love of the books and encouraged her to pitch clothing ideas for Blue. some of Blue's hand-made, shredded pieces were actually partially made by the actress herself
the "I am not a prostitute" scene took so long to shoot because she couldn't stop laughing at Gansey's actor
prior to being cast, Ronan's actor had dark, shoulder-length curly hair thanks to his Irish genes, but upon being asked if he'd be willing to shave his hair for the role he did it with no hesitation (his mother almost cried)
Ronan's actor has an Irish accent! he was born and raised in Northern Ireland but moved to Massachusetts in his mid-teens, so he was able to put on a very convincing accent for Ronan
he was 100% willing (and maybe too eager) to actually get Ronan's back tattoo but wasn't allowed due to cost and the fact that healing would take far too long, so it was done with makeup and SFX instead
he falls in LOVE with Ronan's car and gets so excited every time he has to film a scene with it
Blue and Noah's actors like to turn the seat heaters on super high every now and then to mess with him — their favourite blooper becomes the one where Ronan gets into his car and immediately shoots right back out of it while howling every swear under the sun
the "I'm always straight" / "Oh man, that's the biggest lie you've ever told" bit took many, many takes to get right because everyone kept laughing
before the first scene featuring the Murder Squash song was shot, only Ronan's actor had actually heard the song, so in that scene Ronan's look of glee and everyone else's looks of shock and horror are genuine
while shooting Ronan and Declan's fight outside Nino's, Ronan's actor accidentally lands a genuine punch on Declan's actor's face and everyone freezes completely until Declan's actor folds over with laughter
Ronan, Gansey, and Adam's actors all pick up the habit of going to the gym together to get themselves into the right shapes for their roles, and Blue and Noah's actors end up joining them (chaos and mishaps ensue)
a video gets posted online of Ronan's actor doing benchpresses while Blue's actress narrates like David Attenborough
off set, Ronan's actor is an easy-going, friendly guy, and his ability to snap into Ronan's mindset and attitude once the camera starts rolling is almost scary
that being said, he messes his lines up the most out of anyone — he'll snap at another character, pause, then burst out laughing
Adam's actor became aware of Adam's whole trademark Coca-Cola t-shirt shtick while researching the character prior to auditions, and after getting the role he made a point of wearing anything but a Coca-Cola t-shirt in any behind-the-scenes pictures that were taken on set just to mess with fans — Pepsi, Fanta, 7Up, you name any soft drink other than Coca Cola, and Adam's actor was probably caught on camera wearing a t-shirt of it at some point
Adam's actor is actually partially deaf, though it isn't limited to just one ear — there are many bloopers of him completely missing his cue, but he always laughs it off
being one of the ones with no prior experience in front of a camera, Adam's actor accidentally looks directly into it so much. and always apologises for like five minutes straight afterwards
Noah's actor is the one to do the majority of the behind-the-scenes filming. after the show's release he posts a compilation of the cast and crew's on-set shenanigans
in the video is a section dedicated entirely to Gansey's actor grimacing every time he's given a new garish polo shirt and pair of boat shoes to put on
out of all of them, Noah's actor most frequently forgets the fact he has a mic on him while in front of the camera. on more than one occasion he whispers "slay" after a character says a good line and the scene has to be reshot because of course the mic picked that up
"Call it by name. Cabeswater." "slay..." "CUT—"
all five of them become incredibly close friends over the course of filming and it's clear to see every time they do group interviews
Blue's actress's legs will be casually slung over Ronan's actor's lap, Adam and Gansey's actors will lean on each other without a second thought, and every time Noah's actor gets excited about a question he gleefully grabs the arm of whoever's sat next to him and they always fondly smile at him in return

honestly kind of glad Maggie backed out of the movie/tv adaptation of The Raven Cycle, because I've vented to a LOT of people about how much I love the books and I know that if an actual movie came out those people that are too lazy to actually read the books would watch the movie and if the movie was even halfway similar to the novels I know I would lose what little reputation I have
