Marital Bliss (Catherine/Peter)
Summary: Catherine spends an early morning with her husband, making a fun discovery. (My first fic for The Great!! I love this show and this pairing. If anyone has any prompts for this fandom, please send them my way!! Anyway, hope you enjoy!)
Intimacy with Peter is entirely different now.
Catherine had spent the first year of their marriage in disgust and contempt of him, only touching him when it was absolutely necessary, mostly in the name of making an heir. She would stare blankly at the ceiling and ponder her plans to overthrow him while he laid with her. It was nothing special, no love or connection, no pleasure.
Leo had given her that, the laughter and joy of another person’s touch, and now, he was gone. Strangely, overthrowing Peter has brought them closer than ever. He should technically be dead, or at the very least, imprisoned entirely, and despising her. Instead, he’s grown rather fond of her, and to her surprise and dismay, the feeling is becoming mutual.
There are nights, like the one before, where she will come to his apartments with false nonchalance, secretly hoping he will beg her to stay. Last night, he had done exactly that, and she had done so, and now, the sun has risen and is shining through the windows, and Catherine is awoken by the light dancing in front of her eyelids. She rolls onto her side and snuggles up to her husband’s side, pleased to feel his warmth and steady breathing against her.
He had fallen asleep in nothing but a pair of sleep pants, and the string of his mother’s pearls around his neck. She plays with the necklace absent-mindedly, enjoying the peace, the stillness of the moment. Her fingers brush his skin as she does so, and she’s surprised when the simple touch makes him stir.
“Good morning,” she whispers, pressing a kiss to his temple.
“Morning,” he mutters in response, eyes still squeezed shut.
She plays with the pearls closest to his neck, and a smile forms on his lips.
“Tickles,” he says, barely a whisper, and clearly not processing what he has just admitted.
She suddenly feels much more awake. “You’re ticklish?” she asks, delighted.
He seems more awake now, too, realizing the gravity of what he’s said, and the obvious, impending consequence. “...No?” he replies, unconvincingly.
Catherine’s lips curl into a mischievous smile, and she watches with glee as Peter begins to shift nervously, like he’s going to make a break for it. She obviously isn’t going to let that happen, so she makes a quick move to straddle his waist, the skirts of her gown splayed across his bedsheets. “No? Then surely you won’t mind if I test the theory.”
“Catherine,” he says, very slowly, like he’s talking to a wild animal with its teeth bared. “Don’t you dare.”
“Last time I checked, I was the one in charge here,” she replies. “So I think I will dare.”
Her knees hug Peter’s hips, keeping him still as she brings her hands to his bare sides, her touch gentle, light as a feather at first, trailing from his top rib to the waist of his pants and back upwards again. Goosebumps spread over his flesh, and he sucks in a breath, worrying his bottom lip between his teeth.
“Hm, perhaps you require a firmer touch to get you laughing?” she suggests, grinning down at him.
He shakes his head, determined to keep his mouth shut.
She, of course, decides to try it anyway, and increases the pace and pressure of her touch, scribbling into the slight curve of his side, and the dam breaks instantly.
High-pitched giggles tumble from her husband’s mouth, and Catherine beams. It’s the most adorable thing she has ever seen, other than her own child’s smiling face.
“I could have made you surrender your crown with so much more ease if I’d know this sooner,” she said.
Peter can only laugh in response. It’s a lovely sound. She has heard him laugh many times, at a stupid jape, or at her expense, but this is different. It is a young, joyful sound that lacks any cruelty.
It is moments like this that show her how truly he has changed. He does not swear, swing out at her, or even protest. He either truly loves her enough to let her get away with this, or…He’s having fun. She can’t quite tell which. Honestly, Peter is such an odd person, she wouldn’t be surprised if he was enjoying this. He craves touch in any form, honestly.
Catherine bends to press a kiss to his collarbone, and while it's never gotten such a response before, it makes him scrunch up and laugh even harder.
Her heart soars. “You are adorable,” she says, muttering it almost to herself.
“Adorable?” Peter giggles out. “No, I’m—handsome, dashing, sexy, fuckable—Wait, not there!”
Catherine scratches her fingers at the small patch of skin beneath her navel and above the waist of his pants. It’s clearly a sensitive spot that makes him grab her wrists, but Catherine keeps scribbling, giggling along with him.
“Catherine, darling, please—” Peter gasps.
She takes the hint and stops, pressing another kiss to his jaw as he tries to catch his breath.
“Sorry. I got carried away,” she says.
Peter smiles. “As you often do in positions of power.”
She feigns an offended expression and pokes his side, making him jolt before flipping their position, leaving her on the bed beneath him. “And yet, you like to be under me just as much. It’s curious,” he teases.
Catherine flushes and glares at him, though there isn’t an ounce of venom behind it. “And here I thought we were having a wholesome, romantic moment. Must you make everything sexual?”
“Yes,” he replies simply. “And you love it, too.”
She pauses, hums, like she’s considering it. “I suppose you’re right. I have a meeting in an hour. Let’s make it quick.”
Peter dives beneath the skirt of her nightgown eagerly, and Catherine ends up ten minutes late for the aforementioned meeting.

The weird way The Great frames infidelity
The Great is a show which portrays many extramarital relationships. However, it is quite inconsistent with the way in which they are framed by the narrative. This portrayal results in a strange theme of ‘cheating is okay if you don’t love your spouse’. Let’s look at all of the affairs in the show and how they are framed:
1. Catherine and Leo: this affair is consensual from all sides until it isn’t. Peter is the one who sets up Catherine and Leo, who she ends up falling in love with. Peter only starts to have a problem with this relationship once he falls in love with Catherine, and we all know how that ends. Catherine is not portrayed as in the wrong for cheating, because her marriage to Peter is loveless and he is a horrible person in season 1. Additionally, Peter is also not framed as bad for being jealous, only for killing Leo.
2. Peter and George: the most fucked up relationship in the show. Both are married; George to Grigor who she does love, and Peter to Catherine who he doesn’t love (at first). It is also pretty evident that their relationship started long before Peter married Catherine. There is an obvious power imbalance here. Peter is the absolute ruler of the country and George is his subject. No matter how ambiguous the question of consent is, he could absolutely have her killed if he wanted to. A lot of people forget how volatile and absolutely cutthroat Peter was in season 1. Catherine is hurt when Peter invites her into a threesome with George, but his infidelity largely doesn’t matter after she decides she doesn’t love him. Peter cheating on his wife is pretty much not a big problem at all and just adds to reasons why he is a ‘bad person’ in season 1. There is also a second element that makes this affair ‘worse’. George’s husband is Peter’s best friend. We see just how distraught Grigor is about this affair, finally snapping and trying to kill Peter. George is framed as an ‘evil whore’ for cheating on her husband with his best friend, while no one mentions how Peter is fucking his best friend’s wife. Peter is the emperor of Russia. He literally could have chosen anyone to be his mistress and he chose his best friend’s wife. Additionally, in the 18th century ‘mistress of the king’ was a legitimate position and one of the only ways for women to improve their position in court. She also makes many references to how she only does this to keep her (and Grigor’s) position in court. (See scenes from s1e5 and s1e9)
3. Peter and Joanna: this one is also a mess. Joanna is obviously framed as bad for trying to seduce her daughter’s husband. Peter is framed as in the wrong— but there is a bit of ‘he couldn’t help himself because Joanna seduced him’— but mostly because of who he cheated with. It’s not that big of a deal that he cheated, it’s bad because he fucked her mother. (And then she fell out the window and died and he covered it up)
4. Grigor and Marial: Similarly to Catherine and Leo, this relationship is also ‘person finds true love outside of their evil spouse’ except George was not an abusive murderous tyrant, but that’s besides the point. This affair is framed as very triumphant for Grigor; he has finally escaped his toxic marriage! Even though his relationship with Marial is very toxic. She is constantly rude to him, lies to him, hates his friends, not to mention how she treats him after Peter’s death. She wants to be the only person in his life. When George returns from France to find that her husband has left her for another woman, she is justifiably upset but is framed by the narrative as in the wrong even though she does nothing to break up Grigor and Marial. Marial is also married to Maxim but he’s 11 so it doesn’t really matter, and the fact that he is upset about her infidelity is played for laughs more than anything.
Honorable mentions:
- Hugo and Agnes: they both make passes at other people but are both always in on it
- Catherine and the American ambassador: it’s fine because she does it to get back at Peter for fucking her mother
- Peter’s countless hookups: don’t matter because they mostly happen when he and Catherine are not in love
- Tatyana and Arkady: Arkady gets really defensive at the idea of Tatyana doing anything with Peter, but she wants to take George’s place as his mistress. This is pretty evident when they think Pugachev is Peter and Tatyana is desperately trying to fuck him. It doesn’t amount to much of anything
When you look at all these relationships and how they are framed, one thing stands out. The only person who is vilified for cheating is George. Even though the dynamic between her, Peter, and Grigor is super complex, the one takeaway the narrative and most people in the fandom get is ‘George is an evil slut’. Even when she gets her ‘punishment’ and loses Peter, Grigor, and some of her standing in court, it’s still not enough and people want her dead. The theme turns out to be ‘cheating is only bad if you’re George’.

Headcanon request! How does Catherine wish to be tickled if she could have her way (with Peter maybe)? /N
omg, okay, so (i don’t think you’ve even watched the show i think ur just humoring me which is so cute ily but i am gonna go off)
catherine does not like to be weak, controlled, dominated, etc. even when she is the submissive one in a situation (not just like in a sexual way like even in a political stance) she always has to have a plan, an escape route, something up her sleeve to take the power back
she canonically will take a submissive role in her marriage for her own benefit, and when she’s reaped those benefits, she submits to peter for her own pleasure but is always the one calling the shots.
so when it comes to tickling, the only reason that he is allowed to tickle her is because she wants it. if he tried, and she didn’t want him to, she would kick and scream and bite and curse him and threaten his life and mean it. by the second season, peter has become the submissive one in their marriage who will do just about anything she tells him (at least, when it comes to intimacy, not really obeying any of her rules lol) and is ready to please her any time.
throughout the show, she is always stressed, overwhelmed, struggling, and she uses various ways of coping, but she just always needs a way to take her mind off of things. tickling would be a great way of that, and she would simply be frustrated, storm into peter’s quarters, and demand he “do the thing”.
she tells him where he is allowed to touch, instructs him exactly how light/rough he should be, flops down on his bed, and spends a few minutes giggling and squirming beneath his fingers before her mind is sufficiently clear, tell him to stop, stand, fix her hair and her dress, cheeks flushed, thank him, and leave the room, pretending it didn’t happen, while he stands there like a lovestruck fool thinking about how pretty she looked laughing.

the great s3 SUCKED!!
diary entry #1 —
I've been meaning to rant about this ever since I finished s3 but the new season of the great sucked SO BAD!! obviously spoilers....
but the way they killed peter was SOOOOO FUCKING STUPID!!! Like a lot of fans are saying people who hated this plot twist just can't accept sad endings/tradgedy and although that might be true in my case, the way the writers went about peter's ENTIRE STORY this season was just FUCKING ASS!!! it's obvious the writers had no clue what to do with his character now that he's no longer emperor. But I can't even say that's 100% the case cuz they did just fine with his character last season when he was serving house husband/malewife vibes.
WHY COULDN'T THEY JUST CONTINUED THAT PART OF HIS CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT?!
I feel like they went backwards on that front. Like why all of a sudden he cared about leading again and proving a point to his father when he spent all of s2 overcoming his mommy and daddy issues and realizing he never wanted to rule Russia nor be a leader...? They could've went down the obvious route of him focusing on being a good father to paul instead. They could've made he want to overcome and unlearn all his childhood trauma to be a good husband and father but NOOOOOOO!!
They honestly just made him a bit annoying this season. Stepping all over catherine's toes when she's trying to be a good empress as if we didn't already do this plot last season with peter having to accept that he isn't emperor anymore.
Enough about peter, I could talk about everything wrong with his story this season for hours, now onto catherine. Catherine also kinda pissed me off this season even though she's just like me fr. I love her a lot but she was really annoying me during the first half of the season. It just sucked that peter had to die in order for her to be a little less annoying this season. And if their plan all along was to test catherine's leadership as empress, I really hate the way to went about it.
First of all, they said FUCK ORLO FOR NO REASON. (I can't even get into orlo wihtout seething). I guess it was to add to catherine's fall so she can rebuild in the finale... ok....? (and that can't be the case because THEY FUCKING HAD HER KILL HIM WITHOUT KNOWING AND GOT RID OF HIS BODY THUS JUST GETTING RID OF HIS ENTIRE CHARACTER WITHOUT A PROPER ENDING AND FOR WHY !@?!#+) Then they're continuing this annoying plot with everyone in palace hating her which that plot line in of itself isn't the problem, it's — say it with me — the execution. The execution/writing was just confusing all season.
I just couldn't comprehend a single writing they made this season, NOT A SINGLE ONE. NOTHING this season nor last season ever even hinted at this being the outcome. It's one thing for it to be a plot twist but I feel like even when the plot twist occurs there should be an "ohhhhhhh...." moment where everything clicks and you start piecing together and understanding every plot and action that lead to the plot twist but that never happened this season. I was trying to think of all the things that lead to — not just the peter death — but every. single. plot. line. and I couldn't come up with anything.
NOTHING. MADE. SENSE.
It was like I was watching WHOLE. DIFFERENT. SHOW. 😭😭😭 I just could not believe I was watching HULU'S THE GREAT SEASON 3. It was a different show and not in a good way. There's a way to say "this is a different show" when referring to later seasons of a show (ie The Good Place) but no! I mean this is a different show (derogatory). It felt like different writers, producers, directors... SOMETHING!
Anyways, back to catherine. I really thought we would get more development on the court hating her but there was zero to no development on that. Instead we got this dumbass pugachev storyline that could've gone somewhere interesting but no.... they just kill him off way too easily. i was so over it at that point. Like what was the point!? It was just a MESS hunny OMG.... like all of a sudden they wanna be "historically accurate" in the worst way possible. like BOOOOOOO TOMATO TOMATO!!
They could've just kept up the "peter faked his death" storyline if they wanted to "kill him off" but just have him with Sweds if they so badly wanted to get rid of his character, write him off, and be "historically accurate". I'm sorry, killing him was so goddamn unnecessary, all I can do is laugh at this point. Like I literally laughed and looked at my imaginary The Office camera and said "this isn't serious, right?!" when it happened.
At first I thought they killed him off because nicholas (peter's actor) wanted to leave to pursue other projects (cuz I heard a rumor on twitter) but turns out in a interview he said he was sad that they killed off peter and that he loved playing him and didn't wanna leave so now, truly.... WHAT WAS THE FUCKING POINT!? HAJDKD!w&#t&!
In conclusion, I don't think I'll tune in next season (we'll probably have to wait EVEN LONGER bc of the writers strike). The show just went down in my ranking for my fave shows of all time but if I act like season 3 doesn't exist it can still remain at the top. In my mind, the show ended with peter realizing he doesn't need approval from his dead father and realizes catherine, paul and his friends are enough for him and they continue to be girlboss and her malewife. the end.
Yeah idk what the actual fuck the writers were thinking this season. Like LITERALLY what possessed their minds to write this season like this?!?! I'm genuinely asking 😭.
It's been WEEKS and I can't even fathom putting myself in their shoes and seeing how they thought this season was good and made sense. It was like watching a psychological thriller, like how far could the writers break and twist my mind before I completely lost it at the same time catherine did. If that was their intention well then good job, if not, FUCK YOU! 😭
like were they just trying to throw shit at the wall and fuck the show over before the writers strike era fucks them over or something?!?!??
BONUS, some things I actually liked this season: george's development was fun and enjoyable. not being able to tell if she was putting on an act or not was fun like where is her oscar!? I was genuinely waiting for her and catherine to become real bffs instead of marial (I DIDN'T EVEN TALK ABOUT MARIAL THIS SEASON BC SHE PISSED ME OFF SO BAD ALL SEASON, LIKE WHAT WERE THEY EVEN DOING WITH HER?!?!?). I'm rooting for catherine and george to be real friends. catherine and grigor being real friends is all I ever wanted, omg they were so cute. Even if they weren't REAL bffs, their little alliance for peter in episode 6 was so cute to see I love them so much.
I just loved grigor so much this season idk he was just so enjoyable this season. like poor baby he's been through so much I just wanna hug him after the peter thing happened and FUCK ASS MARIAL WAS BEING A TERRIBLE PARTNER AND DIDN'T SUPPORT HIM AT ALL THROUGH THIS. Like even if you hated peter's guts not comforting your partner during a hard time is so nasty and fucked like FUCK HER FR. i hope they aren't endgame, marial really doesn't deserve him and it seems like grigor isn't even all that into marial anymore anyways.
Velementov this season was great, a little sad so it pissed me off a bit especially when they revealed he's not actually sick anymore.... ok..., but he was serving father figure with catherine this season and it was so cute.
The Sweds were funny and interesting (despite hugo lowkey being the reason peter died but we MOVE).
also... kinda mad we didn't get pugachev and archie fucking like ....!??!>@ 😭😭 archie deserved to get LAID!! IM SORRY I HAD TO SAY IT!!! But also fuck him and fuck the writers for going backwards on his character. after all of that development in s2 and thinking he was fine all season, they all of a sudden made him betray catherine for whatever dumbass reason i don't remember and then catherine has him killed when i was just starting to really enjoy his character. well fuck me ig... (also he's not even actually dead, marial's bitchass dug him up so WHAT WAS THE REASON?!)
This post was very long windeed but all in all, this season was a mess. I couldn't believe what the fuck I was watching cuz this wasn't MY the great, certainly not MY SHOW. And I'm not excited for next season but I guess we'll see... s3 ruined my whole week and I'm done talking about it.
bye <3 🍒
