A Cornstalk Fiddle
(Part 1/?)
And here they are! The first three pages of a fan comic, based on @notbecauseofvictories brain altering fic 'A Cornstalk Fiddle'. Read more below if you're interested in where this comic came from and where it’s going :))
I've continuously returned to notbecauseofvictories’s writing over the years— if I ever feel lost in my own story telling when it comes to comics, poems or prose, notbecauseofvictories is one of those authour's whose work always reignites a creative spark in me, and I just wanted to make my own tribute to one of my favourite stories <33
I've had this all visually planned out in the back of my mind for a year now, and finally drafted the storyboards this summer. I can’t promise a timeline of when the next pages will be posted, hopefully over the next few months, but I’m planning on doing this whole scene and it should come to about ten. I hope you guys enjoy them and tell me what you think!

|| 🍍• Just realised Hell’s Greatest Dad is literally just The Devil Went Down To Georgia.
…like it’s literally the devil beefing with some guy about who’s better…
The devil starts the banger all cocky, but then Johnny cooks him second…
Hear me out hear me out

As someone who previously only thought about book design as font choices and cover art, it’s amazing to me how many more options there are; just how very creative you can get with paper, stitching and ink.
For example, I never questioned how a new book should smell---at least until I received this copy of Cornstalk Fiddle from @fanboundbooks. Opening up the box, I was struck by it---and then when I lifted the book to my nose, I actually laughed aloud. @fanboundbooks had managed to ship me a book that smelled like the Devil’s cigarettes: all smokey, burning leaves and paper underneath. Combined with the burned and jagged edges of the pages, it make the experience of flipping through the book almost sensory in and of itself.
The burnt pages had another effect, whether intentional or not. If you turn the pages, then touch the white cover, you leave the black smudges of fingerprints behind. Given that the Devil leaves mysterious black marks on the passenger seat of Johnny’s truck, I thought this was---if you excuse the pun---cool as hell.
(I also love the textured and delicate green flyleaf paper. I’m not sure whether it’s a deliberate reference to the green of Ava’s garden, or if it was just chosen to be lovely---but it is my favorite color, so I just like it.)
Overall, there’s just something wildly impressive to me about three people taking the same story and turning it into three different books---different paper, different binding styles, different details chosen to emphasize, but all immensely creative in their own right.

I think my favorite adventure Johnny Ghost went on was when he had to beat the devil to get the golden fiddle.

Guys if they were for some reason to bring back Johnny Spirt for G3 would he be able to kick Heath’s ass in a fiddle contest?
Heath has said his dad is always telling him to practice his fiddle

anyways johnny’s part of the devil went down to georgia is one of the best fiddling portions of recorded songs of all time and the devil’s bit is just a glorified scale exercise

Recently reread ‘A Cornstalk Fiddle’ by @notbecauseofvictories - I thought I’d actually try and make some art! I’ve always had a pretty solid idea of what Johnny looked like in my head, but capturing the Devil was a lot more tricky. The next time I draw him he’ll probably change again, but I think that suits his character just fine.
Plus a little bonus experiment:

Chapter two of A Cornstalk Fiddle... only two illustrations for this one since it's a shorter chapter than the other two, but I still greatly enjoyed picking scenes from this one! (As before, based on @notbecauseofvictories brilliant fic)
Stay tuned for Chapter 3!
(Chapter 1)

Been thinking about Devil Went Down to Georgia and realized that it never specifies Johnny's age. How old have y'all been imagining Johnny being?
Cause honestly I can never imagine him being anything other than 7 yrs old. Like he just gives arrogant little gifted 7 yr old brat to me and trying to imagine him like 20 or something feels wrong. Because you mean to tell me a 7 yr old wouldn't shout out "I done told you once you son of a bitch, I'm the BEST there's ever been" or "you know my name's Johnny, and it might be a sin, but I'll take your bet, you're gonna regret cause I'm the best there's ever been!" You just can't convince me that isn't a 'kick you in the shins' little fucker, a 'what are you gonna do? Hit a kid' little fucker, a spoiled little brat that you just wanna drop kick if given the chance. This is a 7 yr old little arrogant piece of shit and there is no changing my mind.
