Reincarnation of film genius
Unless you’re up in years or a aficionado of the early days of filmmaking, Eddie Redmayne’s poignant photo by Greg Williams for British Vogue recently may have offered charm but no context.
Me being both, I immediately spotted Eddie’s brilliant homage to Buster Keaton.
A website devoted to Keaton + his art (see link at the bottom of this post) describes him this way: “A giant of American comedy. A performer of the impossible. A filmmaker of grace and beauty. A genius in slapshoes and a flat hat.”
His stunt work + physical comedy was staggering, but equally moving was his restraint, characterized by his famous deadpan expression.
More recently, Keaton was dubbed by no less than the BBC as “today’s most influential actor” for inspiring the likes of Oscar Isaac + Adam Driver (see below)
By the time I was a child/teen, Keaton was appearing in cameos, including some major films, but I was fortunate enough to study his early silent films, which could be both funny + heartbreaking.
Cheers to Eddie + the brilliant Greg Williams for remembering this pioneer. Eddie is a worthy successor to his reputation for genius, creativity, energy + passion for his craft.

This Day in Buster…March 30, 1924
The Chicago Tribune prints a reader’s poem, the first stanza being devoted to our Buster: “Buster Keaton, why don’t you smile? And why do you look so glum? Is it just your cynicism, Or are you really dumb?”

Was practicing gesture drawing here, found poses with similar body types to Query and Echo, so decided to practice drawing them. Reference images photographed by Marcus J. Ranum
