something i see fairly often when people discuss buster keaton's alleged abuse as a child is that the people who argue against it create a strawman of what the opposing side thinks.
"he wasn't the boy who never smiled, so horribly beaten by his father that he never smiled! he was very happy as an adult, everyone said it!"
i suspect most of this is the result of the marion meade biography "cut to the chase," which i haven't read yet, but which seems to have spread misinformation that lingers to this day. it drew a sharp line in the sand, and i assume the militance i see in the fandom re: joe keaton's treatment of his son is an overcorrection—an understandable one, but which nevertheless dismisses (or minimizes) the very real difficulties that buster faced. there's wiggle room for some nuance, here.
yes, i think buster keaton was abused as a child. no, i don't think it was as reductive as "joe hit buster and buster was sad forever after."
first, buster was forced to grow up much too quickly. he wasn't allowed to be a child, to make friends with his peers, or even to go to school. he functionally became a breadwinner at the age of five, when his inclusion in the family act made it financially successful. he said himself that he was treated like an adult by everyone around him, though he tried to pass this off as something any child would want. it cannot be understated: forcing a child into an adult's role, with an adult's responsibility, is a form of abuse. whatever needs buster may have had were ignored in favor of what his family needed him to do. neither can we write this off as a relic of bygone social mores: if we can recognize the damage spanking causes regardless of the century in which it occurs, then we are obliged to do the same for emotional neglect.
second, in buster's teens, joe keaton did start overtly hitting him. to the naysayers' credit, no one denies this. buster, too, was very candid about joe's alcoholism: as it got worse, he would come onstage in a drunken fury, and only buster's quick thinking and acrobatic skills kept him from harm. william collier jr., one of buster's friends, was far less circumspect, calling joe a "living horror." (admittedly, that quote comes from meade's biography. if we must remove her from the equation, then let's look to rudi blesh's account on page 76 of his biography, where joe forced buster into a wrestling match buster wanted no part of). joe may not have left bruises on his son, but many kinds of cruelty don't leave a mark. and most importantly, child abuse doesn't only count when the victim is pre-teen. if your father punishes you for private family matters on stage in front of an audience—which joe did, by buster's own account—it doesn't matter how old you are: that is damaging. it was enough for buster to break up the family act and (for a short time, at least) become a teetotaler.
third, the long range effects of child abuse can be difficult to recognize, especially if the victim is unwilling to acknowledge it as abuse. i don't deny that buster had happy moments in his adulthood; it's impossible to be miserable all the time, and his films were clearly a significant emotional outlet (i'd also say the last 26 years of his life were nigh unreservedly happy). but buster's comments about his father's treatment sound very much like a victim constructing a narrative to forgive their abuser: "oh, but i was a rambunctious kid, i deserved it." james karen, a family friend and protege of buster's, believed that buster disliked his father, but refused to admit it because he felt that "disliking your father was un-american." repression doesn't look like brooding in a rainstorm. repression looks like smiling and laughing and running away from difficult emotions—and buster was a champion at avoidance. honestly, i don't feel we can trust buster's account of how joe keaton, joe schenck, and others treated him, at least as far as his emotions are concerned. after all, he also said he was physically incapable of smiling on camera. we can admit he was full of shit, sometimes.
there's a difficult question here about whether we can treat a real person's first-hand account of their emotions as the product of an unreliable narrator. i'm a writer; i read into things, and this colors my interpretation. i'm sure a historian would have a different take. but the plain truth is, it's possible to have an outwardly happy childhood while still suffering abuse. it's possible to be the lighthearted life of the party despite being an emotional mess inside. and abuse—or any kind of trauma, for that matter—doesn't have to be severe, visible, or even acknowledged to have an impact. nor does it doom the victim to a tragic ending. i think we can all agree that buster, whatever his childhood, got a happily ever after.

This Day in Buster…March 28, 1924
The Daily Nonpareil reviews “Our Hospitality”: “Buster actually went over a fifty-foot fall tied to a log.  Had the log failed to jam and hold him swinging just below the brink, he would have finished off either by crashing on the rocks fifty feet below the falls, or the heavy log would have fallen on him and fatally crushed him.”
It was a risky stunt, but Buster had those falls built… it seems he got the reviewers to fall for it ;)
