Do you think Cesare's reaction to seeing Vanozza's former lover at her house is more of a display of his oedipal tendencies or is it just a milder version of Juan's "how dare you bring dishonor upon our family" outburst?

I actually didn't think it was either, I thought it was misplaced anger toward Rodrigo. The scene just before it, he and Rodrigo are discussing the seating arrangements for Lucrezia's wedding and Rodrigo dismisses his concerns

which is something Rodrigo does frequently,

so I think he was reeling from yet another instance of that and then he happens upon Theo who is an easy target for his ire

but I also think despite his ironic and condescending tone, when he's posing these questions

there is some actual musing there

because he does feel trapped by his father’s ambition, by the role he put him in,

he desperately wants another path for himself, which causes a lot of unhappiness for him

On top of that, Lucrezia is trapped by their father’s ambition,

this conversation also happens in the same episode he confronts Theo

he laments the way she’s slowly losing her innocence

plus Rodrigo’s plans require Lucrezia to marry a Sforza and he has Djem, someone who made Lucrezia happy, murdered to pay for the dowry so she could marry Giovanni, which lands her sick in bed, so I felt like he kind of hated Theo for representing a life he could've had free from all of the constraints

while also resenting that people whisper that Theo is his (or Juan’s or Lucrezia’s but most likely his) real father

Juan brings up the rumour directly in 1x06

so for Cesare it all came out in a display of passive aggressive posturing

what is your second most favorite otp from any series?

AAAAAAHHHHH, DON'T DO THIS TO ME! There are some many pairings I love in so many books, movies, series, soap-operas, etc.

*sighs* Okay, gun to my head, there's three, in no particular order that I absolutely ADORE, have made me cry, and that I legitimately don't understand how anyone could watch these shows and not ship them (spoilers for Friends, How I Met Your Mother and The Borgias, respectively)

Monica and Chandler

Because I was just 4-years-old when Friends final season was aired, I already knew these two were going to be endgame when I watched the show - and it didn't take long for me to see the appeal, even when they were still supposed to be just friends.

They're just so affectionate with each other right from the start, cuddling on the couch, helping each other out - and Chandler just casually says stuff like "If neither of us is married when we're fourty, I'm totally willing to marry and have a kid with you just so you get the family you want" and actively tries PROVE to her he is boyfriend material and they make a game out of it??????? Genius. Perfect. Amazing.

And then it happens, they hook up and right away they're couple goals. Can't keep their hands off each other, are super clingy, all of their friends find them ridiculously adorable, Chandler matures A LOT and Monica is very patient with him because she knows he's used to hiding any emotional turmoil behind a sarcastic joke, and they can joke about and tease each other without either of them being too mean or too sensitive.

Also their conflicts never last more than one or two episodes and they never break up after first getting together, and it was a breath of fresh air coming from the same show that gave us Ross and Rachel.

Barney and Robin

They have INSANE chemistry, Robin was the only woman Barney was truly willing to change for, and Barney was the one guy Robin was with that ever truly liked her for who she was.

They. Deserved. So. Much. Better.

Seriously, I can't get over how unfair their ending was. There's a reason I tell Zutarians to give this show a watch before they complain about how their ship, that was never even canon, was "robbed of it's happy ending."

We see Barney and Robin being teased as potentially having at least a fling someday as early as season 1, they finally hook up in season 3, season 4 is all about him struggling with being in love with her, seasons 5-7 are all about them dating then breaking up while still being very much in love yet never properly reconciliating because life gets in the way, season 8 is them getting engaged and being adorably happy together, the 9th and final season is THE WEEKEND OF THEIR WEDDING and them working through every last issue they still have to make sure they will a long, happy life together as a married couple...

Then the finale goes and says "Actually, they divorced off-screen because their hotel room had no wi-fi. Sorry." WHO THE FUCK DOES THAT? It's really no wonder the network cancelled the planned spin-off right after the finale aired.

Cesare and Lucrezia

Ah yes, a Nichya list of great ships includes a pair of siblings, specifically Older Brother X Young Sister, who would have thought? This time a kind of, sort of historical one! (Seriously, The Borgias is the kind of over-dramatic, historically inaccurate period piece I love wasting my time with, and the aesthetic is incredible).

Even as someone who is very into that kind of dynamic and that knew the show was gonna go there, I was still SHOCKED at how unsubtle is right from the start - especially once I found out the writer didn't want to play up the sexual tension originally.

Somehow, the first time we see these two on screen, Lucrezia is spying on her brother as he has sex and once he notices he playfully chases her around the garden, berating her for spying on him AGAIN, and then when they're on the ground together he just casually admits to loving her more than he loves God????????????????????????????? NORMAL SIBLING BEHAVIOR, EVERYBODY! NOTHING WEIRD GOING ON HERE!

I adore how protective (and possessive) Cesare is of her, ready to commit murder at the very thought of a man mistreating her - yet he is still willing to step aside when he thinks she found a good man, because nothing matters to him more than Lucrezia's happiness, not even his own. It just so happens that he always has to step in again because nobody loves her quite to insane degree he does, and thus she only feels truly safe, happy and loved with him, hence her saying "Only a Borgia can truly love a Borgia."

And they, legitimately, are insepareble. They're always close to each other, holding hands, hugging, cuddling, KISSING - all long before they're ready to admit, even to themselves that they're in love.

They are so clueless about what level of physical affection is normal between relatives that they made out in front of her husband and were surprised he found out about their incestuous affair.

And more importantly, thanks to the show being cancelled after season 3 instead of getting the planned fourth season, they never broke up! The show literally ends with them in each other's arms, accepting their love. I couldn't have asked for literally anything else.

Haha, you mean another? Because I have quite a few.

This is probably just going to be a repeat of a bunch of things I've said in previous breakdowns but now said in this specific context.

On one level, I think they respect each other because they're both Borgias, and they understand what that means and they love each other because of that and in spite of that simultaneously.

They've both had romantic interests who do not understand them and/or are frightened of them and/or resent them and their "Borgia-ness"

and I think they respect that they can be themselves completely and utterly with each other

because as they've seen, not everyone can handle a Borgia -- Cesare drove Ursula to the convent

and Lucrezia drove Alfonso to drink

both Paolo and Ursula end up dying because they fell for a Borgia whether directly (Paolo) or indirectly (Ursula).

But they have the will and the grit and the passion to accept and love and withstand each other and are not put off by what they do or how they act or how they think, they embrace it. Ursula couldn’t handle that Cesare killed her husband for her

Lucrezia accepts the knife with Giovanni’s blood on it

On a less abstract level but very much related to this, I think we see that Lucrezia respects Cesare's strength and his ferocity

From another post of mine:

[..] in the first scene they have together when Cesare is ready to kind of let Alfonso have it about whether or not he trusts Frederigo with the “future of his family” i.e. Lucrezia, before Alfonso reveals Lucrezia was the one who helped get Frederigo to where he is, she looks turned on

which is why when 3x04 happens, she's yelling this

all the things that she counts on, that she loves and that she respects.

And as much as his ambition can feel suffocating at times -- a Borgia trait

she respects it because it's also in her

and Cesare's respect, I think evolves throughout the series, which I've sort of spoken about in the first analysis I ever did of Cesare and Lucrezia where when we first meet them, I think he respects her innocence

he doesn't want anyone else to tarnish it, he wants to protect it because he respects its existence.

After season 1, after Giovanni, we see how that sort of begins to shift to respecting her will, respecting her decisiveness as we see in 2x01 when she saves Rodrigo, she took action, she saved their father

and by the end of season 3, when she poisons Alfonso and he realizes she can make these decisions, she can make these calls, he respects her ruthless kindness, he respects that she has the mark of Borgia same as him

all the while respecting her as this breath of fresh air and this light for him.

1- How many works do you have on AO3?

2- What's your total AO3 word count?

3- What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

LOL, I had just automatically rearranged my stats graph to rank fics by kudos instead of hits. It's:

Season of Courtship (inevitably), a Darcy/Elizabeth canon-compliant engagement interquel I wrote as a teenager;

But Thou Didst Not Leave His Soul In Hell (always a pleasant surprise), a short AU in which Luke convinces Anakin/Vader to flee the Empire with him;

per ardua ad astra, a Rogue One+ANH Jyn/Cassian AU in which Jyn, Cassian, and Bodhi escape Scarif only to get trapped on the Death Star and forced to pass themselves off as Imperials;

we get dark, only to shine, a longggg yet unfinished AU of The Borgias in which Cesare and Lucrezia begin their affair during S1 instead of S3 (CW for canon sibling incest, murder, etc).

Contradictions and Varieties (baffling), a short Darcy/Elizabeth AU I wrote for a fest in which it takes them slightly longer to get together.

4- Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I try, especially with fics I'm actively updating, but I'm always behind on it. I mostly just get distracted and forget.

5- What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending?

Oh, interesting question! I don't write a lot of angsty endings, but there are a few options, and I think it probably would have to be the gift of men, a short (~1k) Fourth Age fic in which Eldarion goes along with a politically convenient marriage to one of Faramir and Éowyn's daughters, and falls in love with her, only for her to die of old age while Aragorn and Faramir are still alive and Eldarion remains young.

Honorable mentions: Set On This Path (Luke and Leia are brought up in the Empire + fusion with the story of the bloodbending brothers in B1 of Legend of Korra, complete with murder-suicide) and the last day (a chirpy epistolary fic that takes an abrupt turn after the genocidal attack that begins the Guild Wars games).

6- What's the fic you've written with the happiest ending?

Um, just considering the ones that have endings, to be fair, and ... hmm, that's harder. A lot of happy endings! Probably the ones that are happiest for me, personally, are First Impressions (m!Elizabeth/f!Darcy re-telling of P&P) and whatever we deny or embrace (f!Cassian/Jyn).

7- Do you write crossovers?

Not often, but sometimes! Like now.

8- Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Yes! I've gotten hate more than once wrt Season of Courtship in various versions (even before it become so overwhelmingly the popular favorite of my fics). The rest has been on other fics and mostly on ff.net.

TBH the subtler stuff bothers me more than outright hate (corrections based on adaptations or fanon or expanded universe material I already said I wasn't using, concern that I might switch permanently to a new format I'm trying out, etc).

9- Do you write smut?

Very rarely. I respect people who can write good smut (hi incognita!), but I'm definitely a fade to black sort unless the ship is already so out there that I'm long past feeling self-conscious about it.

10- Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Yes. It's happened a couple of times, but the main one was someone who stole a few Austen fics from various people and tried to piece them together into something they could sell on Amazon. One of the fics was The Rich Are Always Respectable (not what I would choose to plagiarize if I were going to, but ... okay).

11- Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yes, several times. I think it's cool!

12- Have you ever co-written a fic before?

I wrote a short fic with my friend @tulinlina many years ago :)

13- What's your all-time favorite ship?

Darcy/Elizabeth. Truly this ship is the terror of the seas!

14- What's a WIP that you want to finish but don't think you ever will?

Oh, man. This probably requires more self-knowledge than I really have. Um ... I hate saying it, but we get dark, only to shine is likely this. I had so many plans for where it was going to go, but I'm just in a very different fannish place these days.

15- What are your writing strengths?

It feels weird to say, but I think I write solid dialogue (it's certainly my favorite thing to write!) and fairly clean prose in general.

16- What are your writing weaknesses?

Description is my truest nemesis—I tend to place scenes in just empty or vaguely described space. Fight scenes and that sort of thing are really difficult (for related reasons). Finishing things—my stuff nearly always grows out of control and it screws up pacing and so on.

17- What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

A little goes a long way, IMO. I did a bit of it in my fic about Leia and Cassian and Alderaanian, in tongues and quiet sighs, so I can't judge it too hard, but it's very much something to handle with care (especially with conlangs—Tolkien fic can be pretty grating this way).

18- What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Tolkien! My first attempt at a fic was a Faramir-goes-to-Rivendell-instead-of-Boromir AU that never got very far.

Well, my first serious attempt at fanfic, that is—I wrote original stuff for years before that, and I guess technically I tried to write Trixie Belden fanfic when I was about 10 ... and the original stuff spun off from a piece that was basically a Secret of Mana fanfic I wrote even before the Trixie Belden stuff. But in terms of something written within a fandom community, the Faramir fic.

19- What's a fandom/ship you haven't written for yet but want to?

Hmm. I'm not sure, actually. I mostly just write stuff if I feel like it. Oh—it's cheating, but I've barely written Korra/Kuvira even though I adore the ship. I'd like to write a proper Korvira fic someday.

20- What's your favorite fic you've written?

This changes pretty often, though there are always a few that come up when I'm asked. At this moment in time, probably The Jedi and the Sith Lord, the third (sort of) of my f!Luke Skywalker fics, and the one where the story finally swerves off the canon tracks and becomes its own thing. Maybe (probably?) not my best work, but the Lucyverse is my baby and I think TJATSL is my best work in it.

I’ve been watching The Borgias (2011, Showtime) recently, and you can see that I have already GIF-ed a few scenes on my blog. I have perused the show tags on Tumblr, and one question caught my attention - how is Cesare’s love for Ursula different from his love for Lucrezia. In the earlier episodes, I camped with those who said that Ursula was his first “serious” love, while what he felt for Lucrezia was infatuation and possessiveness rooted in their blood connection. Cesare, from the beginning, is shown to be a young, hot-blooded lad who cannot keep his emotions in check around his sister. But when Ursula enters the picture, coinciding with Lucrezia getting married and physically separating from Cesare for the first time, he does what he knows best - becomes Ursula’s saviour (not before he saves his sister one last time from the grips of her vicious new husband). So, Cesare and Ursula go around town, not being able to keep their hands off each other, hearts racing every time they meet, and then he sleeps with her, following which, she decides to spend the rest of her life serving God. This leaves Cesare heartbroken, as much he conveys to Lucrezia when she visits for the first time after her wedding. So, we know that he was in love with Ursula briefly. It was a whirlwind romance for him, ONE THAT WAS DIFFERENT FROM WHAT HE FELT for Lucrezia.

These theories become apparent in the season 1 finale episode, when both the women come face-to-face, with Cesare in the picture. Cesare leaves Lucrezia with Ursula, now going by the name sister Martha, to help hide Lucrezia’s illegitimate pregnancy (as per her wishes). The conversation goes like:

He is focused on Ursula thus far, having met her after a long time (presumably). But when Lucrezia says this, he looks at her momentarily:

appreciating the fact that she understands the tribulations Ursula must have gone through to make this choice for herself, just like he did a few episodes earlier. THEY ARE ON THE SAME PAGE REGARDING URSULA.

Ursula then replies:

To this, Cesare’s gaze again flits from lady love to sister:

The gaze he gives to Ursula says that he is listening closely, weighing her words and interpreting her intentions all at once, but the moment she pulls in Lucrezia into the equation, his gaze softens, like as though saying “I know right, I’ve been distracted by [her beauty] for so darn long”!

Then Ursula takes Lucrezia’s hand and leads her to her room, giving her friendly advice along the way. As she does this, Cesare stops her and warns her that he will be visiting them often. They have a bit of a tensed back and forth, where he teases Ursula with his passive aggressive words and expressions (L bearing witness):

As an aside here, it is pretty interesting to see that Cesare addresses Ursula as ‘SIster’ instead of the usual ‘Sister Martha’ (even for formality sake in front of another individual), almost like there seems to be an intentional ambiguity as to whom he is relaying the message. He’s looking at Ursula, his tone is provocative, but his phrasing and the message in itself is tame, something he’d want to tell Lucrezia in private (as is evident from the jubilant smile she gives in reciprocation). It may well be that the message is for Lucrezia, and Cesare uses morose humour to indulge Ursula in the process. But I digress.

Back to the scene, he then turns to Lucrezia. Immediately, his expressions soften once again, a heavy burden descends in his heart as he realises the gravity of his sister’s condition and not knowing when he’ll see her next. Much like what he felt at the time of her wedding, a sense of déjà vu swarms over him, of his vulnerability, that led him to meet Ursula in the first place. The camera work in this moment also reinforces what truly matters to Cesare: it pans away from Ursula and lumps the siblings up together, the movement is so smooth and exquisite that we as viewers can see Cesare GRAVITATE towards Lucrezia and her receiving him whole-heartedly. This moment cements the fact that Ursula is all but a passing phase in Cesare’s life, one that he can control, while Lucrezia is... his basic instinct.

In a crowded room, Cesare and Lucrezia will somehow ALWAYS find each other and come together. They ditch all public etiquette and become IMMERSED in one another, acutely sensing what the other needs and giving/receiving without the fear of social stigmas attached to their actions. Everything is INVOLUNTARY when it comes to this duo.

The energy at this point also turns much more serious and beguiling, almost seductive (as with all their scenes), when compared to the passive aggressive banter Cesare has with Ursula moments ago. How his demeanour and expressions change between Ursula and Lucrezia is very telling of the fact that Ursula was a fleeting love, while Lucrezia is a permanent impression on his soul, like the crucifix on Jesus Christ. He loves(d) Ursula with his heart, while he loves Lucrezia with his soul.
