"In none of the numerous despatches of the day is this suspicion mentioned, although in a private letter of Malipiero's, dated Rome, June 17, 1497, and in one of Polo Capello's reports, allusion is made to the "rumor" regarding the criminal relations of Don Giovanni and his sister. Could the fact that Lucretia never engaged in any love intrigue—at least she is not charged with having done so—with anyone else, when there were in Rome so many courtiers, young nobles, and great cardinals who were her daily companions, have given rise to these reports? It is a fact that nothing has been discovered which would indicate that this beautiful young woman ever did engage in any love affair. Even the report of the ambassador, who, writing to Ferrara, not from Rome but from Venice, states that Lucretia had given birth to a child stands alone. She had at that time been separated from her husband Sforza a whole year. But even if we admit that this rumor was well founded, and that Lucretia did engage in some illicit love affair, are not these relations and slips frequent enough in all societies and at all times? Even now nothing is more readily glossed over in the polite world." — Lucretia Borgia, According to Original Documents and Correspondence of Her Day, Ferdinand Gregorovius (January 1, 1904)

"Lucrezia, indeed, seems to have been the only person with whom Cesare established any real contact, the only person who could penetrate the façade of polished charm with which he faced the word." — The Fall of the House of Borgia, E. R. Chamberlin (1974)

Showtime's THE BORGIAS (2011 - 2013)
Stills from a pitched opening title sequence and art that were unused, creator unknown. Showtime would later use a title sequence from Gary Waller.

DAVID OAKES as JUAN BORGIA THE BORGIAS (2011–2013) | 2.02 “Paolo” "I think that was the great thing about playing a genuine character although we play a little fast and loose with some moments in history. During the season I definitely felt the lead up to the first season was pretty much accurate as it is in the history books. A great deal is known about Juan. I think that’s quite interesting, but I mostly took all the factual stuff I could find."

"It was only natural for [Rodrigo] to want his children raised as Spaniards. Although he later sent Cesare and Juan to Italian universities, they went in the company of their Spanish preceptors. Generally completed their education at one or more of the numerous Italian universities. Cesare left for the Sapienza of Perugia in 1489, when he was fourteen. Juan followed almost immediately." — Emma Lucas, Lucrezia Borgia (2014)

— Has your heart ever been sick, Micheletto? There are some who would doubt I even have a heart, my lady. Well, Unfortunately, I do. And mine is weeping.

Perhaps I should do as you have done, brother. Take holy orders, give my heart to God. It might be the safer option, my love.

— You care so much for one you hardly know? Yes. It is a puzzle. Or a mystery. Your visage is before my eyes when I'm asleep, when I wake, when I close them. I thought my eyes deceived me. Now I think, mine ears. Neither.
