So I've been spending the last few monthes reading, watching, walking, and just overall researching foraging safely and the types of plants in my area. Today was the first day with my spouse and son that I was able to identify some plants confidently... so of course with my direction we began foraging.

It saddens me that one of the main motivators for foraging today is knowing that my neighbors and my mother in law would be getting their lawns mowed soon and most of what I gathered today would've been lost. People just don't know what they have.

We pay to remove plants, herbs and even fruits growing naturally in our lawns, only to go buy the same plants from our grocery stores.

Plants found:

Dandelion: the whole plant is edible if you can spot it from its copycat. The leaves can be used the same way as most greens, it's roots when dried can be used to brew Dandelion coffee, and the flowers can be used for tea and to make honey

Chives and Onions: a common herb and garnish its stalks grow back once cut. If left to grow long enough they absorb nutrients better and can produce bigger onions but for now these chives were found before being mowed over and the onions are quite small but very strong and flavorful

Dead nettle: this one was new to me learning about it near the end of winter and seeing the small purple flowers growing. The flowers and leaves droop downward almost making a closed umbrella shape. It can be eaten raw or cooked and is used in salads and smoothies for garnish and flavor. They are high in nutrients and vitamins. Left to grow in the sun the purple turns almost pinkish and the leaves get lighter but still useful

Pine (cones, needles and seeds): I didn't forage the cones or needles today cause I knew I'd be busy, but baby pinecones can be cooked and eaten and the needles when cleaned and placed into an airtight container with water and sugar make a soda. I managed to find a few seeds in some of the fallen cones and saved them to plants in our future home

That's what we foraged. We are waiting for some more plants to develop and managed to convince my mother in law to leave certain sections of the lawn left uncut as some plants are still just starting back. Plants were waiting on are plantains, honeysuckle, and violets. Some plants are still too early to identify.

Using the dandelion greens tonight and making a pesto with some of them combined with the dead nettle and onions to use for a future pasta.

W.I.T.C.H. Character Headcanons (bc I say so)

So for those of you who don't know, I'm creating a rewrite of W.I.T.C.H. on Wattpad. It will essentially be if it were given a live action adaptation with a standing total of 60 episodes (5 seasons; 12 episodes per season). These headcanons all apply to said rewrite -- I have my Wattpad linked on my blog so go check it out!

Irma is canonically a Latina lesbian, that's zero debate, however I specifically headcanon her as Guatemalan.

Taranee and Peter Cook are canonically blasian! The Cooks are out here representing the blended families! I will be taking no arguments or criticisms!

I read a post a while ago about how every other fantasy world is based on Medieval Europe, Metamoor/Meridian being one of them and I was like "you know what would be cool? if instead Metamoor was based on Ancient Indian culture." so that's what I did and now Elyon and Phobos are ethnically Indian (Elyon's new name is Elyon Bhandari and I can't think of it as anything else now) (plus Metamoor is actually ten times more interesting with the amount of lore I'm creating for it).

sidenote: I need it to be known that Elyon will also be serving as the vice president of the Sheffield Student Government/Student Council to foreshadow her queenliness and she's also a book girly and she has initiative and Phobos is actually clever enough in his manipulation tactics for Elyon to not question everything until the last couple days leading up to her coronation. I wanted the queen to serve.

Everyone imagine real quick (cartoon) Matt Olsen as a black man. I don't know how I started picturing him black but now I cannot stop because it just works! We need a black lead guitar/lead singer of a rock band everyone will be making thirst edits over who is also humble kind sweet loyal loving-- And can I just say he would look sexy hot with the Shagon dreads! You cannot change my mind on this!

Kio Cyr is literally Eric Lyndon! I found an image with him in a NASA t-shirt and I was like "that's him folks!" Though, I do specifically headcanon Eric as Filipino.

Alchemy is now Alchemy Torres and she's a chem/bio nerd with an affinity for puzzles. I'm still figuring her out but she will gain more importance in S2.

I made a crackship out of Nashter (one of the Runics from the 100% WITCH arc) and Taranee and now it's very very serious. Not only does he have a British accent (do not ask) but he and Taranee are basically a detective duo/partners-in-crime turned besties in S3, which corresponds with the Crisis on Both Worlds arc which means angsty Taranee which means incredible banter between a smartass and a flirt.

And when I tell you that Nashter is the only white Runic I mean it: Darmon is lighter skin black, Shalin is Asian of some sort (specific region TBD), Cromo is dark skin black, and Ran-Rah is indigenous af.

Caleb lowkey is giving indigenous energy? I've barely touched him but the farthest I've gotten is that I saw one fanart of Caleb if he were on Phobos' side originally and now he has a whole defection arc in S1 from head of Phobos' guard to rebel leader in addition with angsty C&C so there's that going for us.

Caleb himself is Blasian, and one of his Grandparents might be of South Asian ancestry. His right hand is a hook. I haven't seen that film, so my description may not be accurate if I got something wrong.

Quinn, Papa Louie's Lawyer and ex-wife of Timm, as a were-cat. She has claws and is scowling. In the games, you get a reward if you make her order ahead of time. She is a closer, and shows up at the end of the in-game day.

Trishna as an orange-themed magical fairy girl. She is a South Asian fashion designer and likes eating fruits, especially tangerines. She comes off as a bit rude, but means well. She has green eyeshadow here and has a wand. She is also Caleb's cousin.

Second Column:

Tohru, a gamer and manga fan dressed as a plumber and a homage to Mario. She is Japanese-American, and likes pink things. She loves playing video games, and her costume consists of overalls, a turtleneck, and a hat with her initial. She is quite jovial, and her pose reflects one mario is often depicted in.

Rudy, the Bassist for Sacrlett and the Shakers, a co-ed Ska-punk band in the papa louie series. He's usually depicted as an Asian-American human, but here he's a were-dinosaur. He has opalescent sunglasses and a color blocked shirt here. He is also smiling at the viewer. His spikes reflect the spiky hairdo as a human.

Xandra, a humanoid alien magical girl dressed as a clown. She and her fraternal twin brother, Xolo, are the rulers of the Kingdom of X and guard the Warp Coins. They landed near an elderly woman's house. The old lady, Edna, Adopted them both. Xandra has teal and hot pink hair with a rainbow top and yellow sleeves. She also is making a silly expression and her clown makeup has mismatched eyeshadow.

Rhonda is a truck driver from toastwood, and is dressed as a witch here. She's Afro-Latine, and likes churros. Her truck is named Josephine, though that name would fit the broomstick she's holding. In the Papa Louie Games, she met her lover, a biker named Rico, and they often travel together. She's laughing here, much often like a witch.

Bloom is brownskinned with a cute baby fro and since in my mind you can change your form however it suits you; she uses her base transformation to experiment with locs, goddess braids, Bantu knots, etc; I like to think the first few times she “half” transformed she also experimented with outfits but when she finally settled she decided on the canon fit and some shoulder-mid back length locs! Tbh I don’t hc her as black most of the time bc she’s like. THE white girl ever but yknow if I’m feeling it I’m feeling it!

Stella has a HUGE fro (like the sun!) and she keeps it in puffs during her base tranformation. Solaria is a whole different planet so i think their hairstyles for Afro textured hair would lean towards mimicking celestial bodies; and it’s actually a point of envy ppl have for Stella bc her hair can mimic the sun so well! (She absolutely uses her powers to give it a soft glow when she wants to make a dramatic entrance, which is always!) There are spells and potions that can help but on Solaria personal fashion is a point of pride in general so copying others is kind of a no go if you wanna be taken seriously. Sad. There’s this cute fanart where they base her off of Greek clothing so I’d personally say she’s black and Greek.

Tecna has a fade and she shaves specific patterns into it whenever she feels like it. She lets people believe that they have to do with whatever topic of knowledge she’s pursuing (since in magix it isn’t unheard of for specific things to require more long term changes in appearance and clothing without a transformation; this predominantly occurs with witches, wizards, and sorcerors, but you’ll occasionally find a fairy or mage doing the same!) I see Tecna as AA bc we are never beating the early 2000s cartoon nerd stereotypes ☹️☹️☹️💔💔💔💔💔

For Aisha I saw this GORGEOUS fanart of her awhile ago wearing a hijab and I basically engrained that into my psyche. I also hc her as either the androsian equivalent to blasian or Egyptian, depending on my mood tbh! I think she’s good at makeup bc she has to be but struggles with finding her personal style (in clothing as well) outside of “royal” but Stella helps her a lot with that and they bond over the burden of being rich and famous 💔💔💔💔

Which leads me to musa who I hc as blasian soooometimes but not rlly? Like idk it really just depends on how I’m feeling but when I do you KNOW she’s rocking the puffs and her hair growth is literally just box braids relax don’t call paw patrol 🙄🙄🙄🙄 black or not; i think she does have a shaved head bleached hair/eyebrows era but she wasn’t rocking with it so it’s whatever. She does enjoy shaving her brows and drawing little shapes instead and when she combines it with a makeup look? Purr.

And finally, Flora. I genuinely don’t have much to say since I didn’t know brown people existed but if I WERE an Afro Latina who saw Winx Club as one of the most diverse shows in media at the time and heavily projected onto and related to flora since the Aisha we literally have wasn’t there in season one, I’d headcanon her as Afro Dominican with 3C curls that she does take care of but doesn’t bother styling. She’d have that “spiritual” fashion sense and loudly demonstrates both her cultures not just because she’s proud of them but because of preconceived notions from silly bitches who think she can’t be both. I think she’d only “do” her hair during her transformations but she eventually ends up with freeforms! She and bloom tried wicks together and book didn’t rock with them but flora fucked with them HEAVY and even though she’d never admit it she partly did like having them because the reactions she got from people who were confused that she spoke Spanish fluently and was actually Latina because it’s possible to be both at once were funny asf!

A friend of mine bullied me into making Hexsquad Redesigns, so thought I’d share them as I go along. Here’s Willow’s!

Her first design is her casual wear, while the second one is her Cloud’s Over the Horizon and King’s Tide outfit. I wanted to give witches a more cat like appearance and tails cause that’s always fun. I also darkened her skin tone since Willow is supposed to be blasian.

I also plan to give the Hexsquad these friendship bracelets with little charms on them, Willow’s is a flower for obvious reasons.

This also gave me an excuse to draw different body types, as that’s not something I’ve really done a lot before. Criticism is welcomed :3

saw a post on owltwit today about racial issues with the owl house, and while i fully agree with

1. gus not getting enough focus and

2. luz being domincan could have been included and featured more and... she does not look afro-latina, even in season 3 when they let her hair curl. that could have been done quite a bit better

but one of the complaints was that willow is supposed to be blasian and doesn’t look it and i’m like??? what??? was there, like, an announcement of that i didn’t hear about? we don’t really know if harvey’s even her second bio parent because we don’t know how witches reproduce and she looks so much like gilbert. and i? don’t? even think harvey looks like he’s supposed to be black?

some facts abt Vegetable:

she's a park ranger! she works at the national park where nerve dumps corpses.

speaking of which, she actually used to be a very cheerful person. she's anxious all the time now because nerve is threatening her into silence.

she's a vegetarian, but firmly believes that if you do eat meat you should use every part of the animal. it's not as much of a moral thing as a sensory issue.

she's a crystal gworlie lol. she's she believes in astrology and crystal and simmer pots and such. basically she's a witch.

seeing nerve makes her feel sick. she can barely stand to be near him, he scares her so much.

the first time she met shroomie she actually liked him, but felt something was off about him. she wasn't prepared for that feeling being correct.

shroomie dislikes her because nerve spends alot of time with her. it doesn't matter that he does this to torment her, shroomie is still jealous.

she finds judas offputting as well, but still thinks his presence is a bit comforting. she figures he's just a bit eccentric.

she comes from a huge family!

Toh Parker Chang au

I had this vivid dream where Gus and willow were one non-binary character named Parker and now I’m really invested in this au, beyond the character.

So, first things first, them and amity broke their friendship cause illusion magic is looked down upon by her parents. One of the things I didn’t like about canon was that they made it seem like willow shouldn’t be looked down upon, because she’s actually super powerful, instead of because bullying is wrong. 

Another thing I’d change was make amity less of an active bully. She’d get her posse to leave Parker alone by saying things like it’s not their fault they have no talent. She’d be distant not cruel. So Parker sees that she’s unhappy with them and doesn’t give up on their friendship.

So Parker and Luz cheat with the abomination to impress Amity. Amity gets super upset because she’s scared of what odalia would do to Parker if amity lost her top student status to them. And in the convention, she accidentally steps on kings cupcake and got caught up in accusing Luz of dragging Parker into trouble. The cheating things still happens, but amity’s scared of what her mom would think about the fuss.

(I don’t understand why amity would bully willow if she was forced to break their friendship. Nor why she burned willows memories. It spoke of ‘my parents and peers look down on you, so I’ll do the same’, but not ‘my parents threatened your chances in hexside if I spent time with you’. They could’ve gone the route of amity being embarassed about anyone knowing she was once friends with willow, accidentally causing more damage than intended, trying to fix it and realizing what a mess she’s made by keeping up an act that made her miserable. Instead amity isn’t held responsible for her actions. Her parents didn’t tell her to mock willow. I love her, but she messed up.)

Parker is more like an older Gus, with willows backstory. They still love human stuff, and have Willows parents, being blasian, 

So now luz is super curious about amity and their relationship progresses mostly the same. In understanding willow, boscha decides to mess with Parker’s memories as a prank and amity unsuccessfully tried to stop her. She and luz go in Parker’s head, and she’s super nostalgic about all their time together. Inner Parker meanwhile has gotten fed up with amity, and attacks her, asking why she didn’t want to be their friend. Amity breaks down, and blurts it out and immediately clams up. Parker cools down enough for luz to fix their memories. But things aren’t solved. 

In Grom, amity’s biggest fear is her mom and she doesn’t want everyone finding out and asking questions. Luz offers to swap with her just like in canon. Then she finds out luz’s biggest fear is also her mom, though not in the same way, not that she knows. She tried to help, but grom turns into odalia. Luz helps her and they do their dance thing. Amity develops her crush, later than in the show.  Wing it like witches is mostly the same. After escaping expulsion, since she no longer has to worry as much about her mother doing something to her friends, she loosens up.

Parker has the plot with the glandus kids, but the golden guard had infiltrated them. (Hunter also feels completely different from his first appearance in escaping tides. They did the cool badass who’s really an awkward nerd better with Lilith.) Everything goes the same, except hunter betrays the glandus kids, compliments Parker on their skills and tries to steal the galderstones for belos. I’m He’s Parker foiled them just like Gus did. 

Then, in ASIAS, Parker is suspicious of hunter and tries to follow him and mess with his recruiting efforts. Hunter’s just impressed and kidnaps them instead and everything else goes the same. They’re somewhat concerned for hunter and become friendlier. 

In labyrinth runners, Parker’s upset that Amity’s being overprotective, same as willow was. Unlike in canon, they’re not that capable of damage, so they feel inadequate and worry that she’s right. They run into hunter and are still somewhat suspicious. Luz had filled them in on what happened in latissa, and their own experiences make them think he’s just misguided, which still is dangerous. They have the same storyline Gus did, and later confront amity. They tell her that they may not be powerful in the traditional sense, but they are not someone to babysit. Amity agrees and ribs them about taking out a coven head. 

Huntlow would instead be wild ranger, I guess. There’d be more banter and teasing. But now I’ve run out of steam
