so about the header that proceeded today's statement:
Viability as agent: Low
Viability as subject: None
Viability as catalyst: Medium
i didn't know what to think of this part of the entry at first, but the longer the statement went on... was the institute in this universe trying to manufacture avatars?
the dice can't do anything without someone to use them, they can't be an "agent" by themselves, but might be capable of manipulation, so in that aspect their viability is "low."
the dice could be a "subject" in the sense that they could use further studying, but the statement itself was a very thorough investigation of their workings, so in that aspect their viability is "none."
the dice seem to influence their holder to roll them, or at least find more victims to roll them, and could therefore be described as a "catalyst" for someone's becoming. but, as seen in the statement, their owner can give the dice to someone else (albeit not without consequences), so in that aspect their viability is only "medium."
so what about the line following all this, what does "Recommend referral to Catalytics for Enrichment applicability assessment" mean? if we go by this interpretation, i'd say it could mean the institute wanted to find a way to make the dice even more potent as an artifact, maybe even remove that pesky ability for their owner to reject them.
imho all of this this brings a whole new level of context to the events of episode seven, of unknown violent agents going after an influx of objects that seemed straight out of artifact storage. was that the nature of the titular "magnus protocol" first mentioned in episode four, the one that involved the starkwall group? containing or destroying potential artifacts before the institute could get their hands on them?
it also makes their "gifted kids program," and sam's link to it as one of the kids being studied, all the more horrifying to think about. was it not just avatars in general they were after, but child avatars specifically? no wonder gertrude got so defensive over the possibility of sam and celia dragging gerry back into the institute's business last episode, we all picked up on her clearly knowing more than she's letting on but now we might know the shape of that information a bit better.
and one final bit of food for thought... this statement had a lot of familiar themes, didn't it? free will or the illusion of it, gambling and not-so-random chance, the statement giver being done in by one final hit from what feels like a bit of an addition... all hallmarks of a certain mother of puppets. doesn't it seem fitting that "chester" would use this kind of statement to warn sam about what harm pursuing the magnus institute could bring to him, considering the one his voice might draw from? and doesn't it seem so painfully ironic that his warning seems to have only driven sam further into that web?

Steve's clock is ticking down. His timer has never had long, something that's always worried him, but now, now the time on his wrist has him nearly in a panic.
Five days.
He only has five days before his soulmate dies, and he misses his chance to ever meet them.
Robin knows about his short timer, and while she's unable to see the tattoo-like numbers ticking down on his wrist, she's been a great source of support. Unfortunately, even she can't erase the panic that's been building up in Steve as the clock ticks ever lower.
And then Dustin and Max rush into Family Video, and of course there has to be a Code Red while Steve is dealing with his own worries. He still goes, still helps, and in the process Steve meets Eddie.
Eddie who is loud, and brash, and funny. Who is kind to Dustin, and patient with Steve, and claims to be a coward but is handling all of this Upside Down bullshit so well.
Steve's soul has been singing ever since Eddie slammed him against a wall, but there hasn't been any time to think about it, to talk about it, and that's the ironic part, isn't it?
The deeper they get into this mess, the more Steve ignores the numbers on his wrist, counting down from five days, to four, to one, to mere hours.
Robin knows, knows that it's happening soon, even Nancy can tell that Steve is on edge, more so than he usually would be. Still, they make their way to the Creel house, leaving Eddie and Dustin behind.
Steve told Eddie, almost begged him, "Don't be a hero," and now he prays that Eddie has enough common sense to listen.
He doesn't.
Vecna goes down, and there are minutes left on Steve's wrist. He bolts back the way they came, knows the girls are right behind even as he outpaces them. He hears Dustin screaming and pushes faster, drops to his knees on the rough ground to find Eddie broken and bleeding out in Dustin's arms.
"Hey, Stevie," he says weakly, and Steve takes his hand between his own.
"Hi there, Eds." Steve knows he's crying as Eddie weakly smiles up at him. He doesn't even have to look at his wrist, he can feel that his time is almost up.
"Stevie, you take care of- of everyone for me, m'kay?" Eddie asks before he coughs, expelling blood and ichor from his airway.
Steve can feel his pulse getting weaker, feels useless as he watches his soulmate bleed out, unable to stop it.
"I will, Eddie. Promise." He takes a breath. "I love you, okay? I know we didn't have long, but I loved you for every minute of it, Eds."
Eddie slow blinks up at him and smiles. "Love you too, Stevie. So much. See you soon, okay big boy?"
Steve nods, gives a soft "Okay."
And his timer ticks down to zero as Eddie stops breathing.

whenever will has a bad day at work (or just a bad day in general), and he's just sitting on the couch and sulking, mike will put on will's current favorite song and ask him to dance really stupidly formally like they do at weddings. will always rolls his eyes and pouts and refuses at first - until he sees mike, his wonderful amazing beautiful boyfriend, busting out his absolute cringiest dance moves to their favorite the cure song or whatever else and singing along to said song horrifically off key in the middle of their living room. and then mike extends his hands to will and forcefully pulls him up off the couch and twirls him around and dips him down to kiss him like he's the most special boy in the world (because he is. Obviously) and will can't pout anymore because mike's hands are so big and warm in his own and it's just them, being stupid and silly and crazy together in their tiny little one bedroom apartment and dancing along to all of their favorites. before the first song even finishes, though, will finds himself singing and dancing along too and twirling mike back because mike's dopey little grin is so damn infectious that he just. can't help it.
and this is how mike develops the Tried And True Method To Turn Will's Frown Upside Down (pun not intended) that he still continues even when they're older and married, because they're still stupid kids at heart and love each other so much that it needs to be shared in every way possible ❤️
