as suna pops into your peripheral vision over the back of the sofa, you turn to hide your face from him, frantically scrubbing at your wet cheeks.

"no," you lie, sniffling pathetically.

the TV is still playing in the background, but it does little to hide the sound.

rintarou hoists his body over the back of the couch, nestling himself and his unjustifiably long limbs into place beside you. he wiggles around while he tries to get comfortable.

"isn't this a kids movie?" he asks you flatly, eyes flickering between the television screen and your face, though you still refuse to meet his gaze. "you're crying over a movie made for children."

you finally turn to look at him, your features pinched in indignation. "lilo and stitch is appropriate for all viewing ages, thank you."

rintarou quirks a brow at your fury, doing nothing to hide his amusement. if his expression tells you anything, it's that he's achieved the exact reaction he'd been hoping for, which only irritates you more.

"wouldn't know," he says with a shrug, the light from the tv flickering across his features, "i've never seen it."

you gape. "if you've never seen it then you can't judge me! you don't even know what it's about."

suna's enjoying your upset far too much, just like he always does. he scooches a little closer to you, tucking his feet under the blanket you have thrown across your lap.

"it's about some little blue monster, right?"

"he's an alien," you correct him pointedly, "and they think he's a dog."

"weird looking dog," suna remarks. he reaches out and swipes at a tear still clinging to your cheek with his thumb. you suppress sudden the urge to bite his hand. "why'd the ugly dog make you cry?"

your lip wobbles again as you turn your attention back to the screen.

you don't want to tell him.

"he was watching his family have fun without him, and he felt left out," you croak out, voice watery. "he tried to build a sandcastle on his own tummy."

it's quiet for a second, only the voices of the characters on screen playing though the darkness of your living room.

"you're pathetic."

his actions are in direct contradiction to his words, because even as he chides you rintarou is wrapping his arms around you comfortingly, pulling you into his lap.

"he just wants a family," you warble, tucking your face against the collar of your boyfriend's sweatshirt. his hand pats gently over your back, the other tugging the blanket up around you both as he nestles you back into the sofa.

"doesn't he have one? who are those people?" he asks, nodding forward towards the screen.

"that's lilo and her older sister, and the hunky guy is david."

"hunky?" rintarou asks, his voice lilting up in what sounds like genuine concern and mild offense.

you snort.

"yeah, he's hot," you say, snuggling even further into suna's chest. "he's nani, the older sister's, love interest."

"so he's like me?" suna asks, wrapping his arms around your waist and holding you close. "and you're nani?"

"no i'm the guy whose ice cream keeps getting knocked off his cone," you shake your head. "and you're scrump."

"scrump?" suna mutters in confusion.

"wanna restart the movie?" you ask, peeking up at him hopefully.

he looks down at you, his eyes following the lines of your face for a moment. he smiles a little, pressing a kiss to your forehead.

"yeah, alright," he agrees once he pulls away, reaching for the remote. "i wanna see who this scrump guy is. must be handsome if you say he looks like me."

What are the best stories you've seen that have a theme of forgiveness? If not strictly about forgiveness, then any themes along the lines of retribution, redemption arcs, or even "seeing through another's eyes" (I may or may not have rewatched Brother Bear recently lol)

Well, we’ve got all my old standbys. Cinderella, of course, is a story that really has forgiveness in it, because Cinderella wholeheartedly forgives her stepfamily for mistreating her. (Actually, she might be “forbearance,” not forgiveness.) But they’re completely off her hook. I think there’s a really great moment of forgiveness between Nick and Judy in Zootopia that gets overlooked. Frozen, with Anna and Elsa. Brother Bear is a really great example, truly! I love that movie.

I think some of my other favorites include the original A Star is Born, or even the Judy Garland remake. (Those also might be more “forbearance.”) I think one of the best examples I ever saw of forgiveness was in Avatar: the Last Airbender, which everybody knows:

And of course, ‘Til We Have Faces and The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis have some of the best-distilled forgiveness moments in any stories, ever. There are sweet ones in The Princess and the Goblin by George MacDonald, too, though they’re not as dramatic. In Anne’s House of Dreams, by L.M. Montgomery, Anne’s repeated forgiveness of Leslie’s coldheartedness or rudeness is a really simple but awesome example of day-to-day forgiveness.

I don’t easily think of a lot of good examples of it in stories. Brother Bear definitely has it, because without it, the story doesn’t work—Sitka wouldn’t help Kenai to learn from his wrongs, Kenai would’ve been killed by Denahi, Koda would’ve been left alone—but I don’t think forgiveness is the main focus of the movie. I think it’s a load-bearing component, but not the focus.

You’re making me want to see a movie that really homes in on that!

The thing is, I guess, for forgiveness to be the focus of a movie, there has to be a character that 100% definitely does the complete wrong, inexcusable thing to another character. Something that he deserves to be on the hook for. Then he has to acknowledge that he did the wrong thing and want forgiveness. And then the other character, the one who was wronged, has to willingly acknowledge that wrong and then let the offender off the hook. It’s not just “we’ll pretend this didn’t happen.” It’s both parties acknowledging that wrong was done, and having an exchange that ends in reconciliation. It’s got grace and mercy wrapped up in it.

Not many movies have true moments like this. Usually, one character is super sorry and the other character just seems to brush off whatever they did with like, a callback to an inside joke or something. (I’m thinking if Treasure Planet, to be honest.) Or, the situation necessitates that they put their conflict aside and work together, and then after the day is saved they sort of “get over” all that and swagger off into the sunset together.

As far as “redemption” goes—gee, all the old standbys! All the ones I mentioned above, plus Star Wars, plus East of Eden (the movie, not the book) plus, of course, my all-time favorite movie, Lilo & Stitch.

In Lilo & Stitch, you have the ugly little creature who belongs absolutely nowhere, is by definition a blight on nature and an abomination of existence, who was actively created to ruin everything. And he does it, and he takes delight in it. But there’s this little girl who gets pushed down, gets her doll chewed on, gets rejected when she’s most in need of his companionship—and she just keeps on loving him anyway. Because she’s chosen to, not because he did anything to deserve it. And then that infects him. That idea of family—of someone choosing to love you, no matter how ugly you are inside and out, and by choosing to love you, they create a place where you belong. No matter what. And that changes him. A germ from outside of him changes him from a literal world-destroying, home-shattering selfish monster into something new, something adopted, something loved.

I’d call it a story about committed love and grace, not necessarily redemption—because the focus of the story isn’t really “Stitch does something wrong but then through a process of pain and transformative struggle, redeems that wrong.” That’s not the focus of the story. But it’s still “bad character becomes good.” And I can’t help but talk about Lilo & Stitch once you get me started on it, sorry!

I think the best redemption stories are some of the ones I’ve listed above, plus East of Eden, Beauty & the Beast, and really, truly Sydney Carton from Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities.

And I think Kylo Ren was well on his way to being one of the best redemption stories of all time, if TROS hadn’t fumbled the ending so clumsily—but that’s another post for another time! I don’t know if this satisfactorily answered your question, but it was fun to ramble about and I’ll tag you if I make another post as more come to mind.

Who would have the more chaotic household, a Taang household or a Kantoph one?

Good question…

With Taang and Kantoph, both couples and families are pretty chaotic. Aang and Toph like to wreak a bit of havoc together and always bring out the fun, “immature” part of each other out. They’d both prefer to just have fun and enjoy their lives. They instigate one another (in a good way), so it creates a bit of chaos.

With their kids, I’d say Toph takes on a more responsible role, Aang is the playful one. But that’s not to say that Toph isn’t playful! She just tones the chaos down just a notch.

With the kids, they have a very open, slightly carefree style of parenting. Their kids explore and go on lil adventures, Toph and Aang try to just let them do their thing and not rain on their parade. Of course, they get nervous sometimes, but they trust their kids and their kids know they can call Taang at any point.

With Kantoph, I think their chaos is a little more tactful. Pointed. They’re not really the pranking type, although there are a few occasions where they’ll instigate something. Usually, it’s them running off to do their own thing away from the crowds. And despite Kanto being pretty mischievous, he’s typically the one that mellows out Toph for the most part.

And with the kids, Toph is the calm, chaotic instigator. After work she typically tries to rest and relax with the kids, but if they’re ever wanting to train or do something that’s a little crazy, she’ll be all for it. But Kanto is trying to be the responsible one and it is a Chore. He freaks whenever the girls nearly get hurt or fall, and he just panics at the mere thought of them hurt or in pain. And the girls think it’s hilarious when Baba is Stressed Out, so that’s just chaos on its own. All the girls are doing crazy little things to get Baba to freak out, and it’s turning Kanto’s hair grey, that’s for sure. Whenever he tries to call Toph over for backup, she teasingly brushes it off until she decides to put her foot down and stop the chaos. Usually, though, she makes Kanto sweat it out for a few minutes longer haha!

My Taang AU has four kiddos, and my Kantoph AU has seven. A little more firepower from the Kantoph side of things, but don’t be fooled. The Dunebabies know how to wreak havoc. Gyatso and Suyin are the “troublemakers” in particular. And Lin typically gets roped into things. Kenji is the baby of the family and can do no wrong ;). Although when he started flying around the city and Toph couldn’t find him… that was a stressful day.

If I had to choose one, I’d say that Taang is a little more chaotic! They have a more open style of parenting that sort of leaves the aunts and uncles stressing out about the Dunebabies. Toph and Aang worry, but they do it in a way that still promotes their kids to be adventurous and curious.

The Kantophlets tend to get tracked down by Kanto and he frets a lot over them (hard to not freak out when there are six baba’s girls running around the city and he’s trying to keep track of all of them!). Because he’s a little more protective and worried, the family’s chaos is pared down just a little bit. I also think I tend to think of the Kantoph household as a little less adventurous? They’re a beach vacation kind of family whereas Taang they travel all the time and go to different, a little more dangerous places. Not saying Taang’s day-to-day life isn’t dangerous, but I think as the Chief and Deputy of Republic City, the danger feels a little more targeted and tangible. So, they try to keep their private life on the down low.

So, there ya have it! Taang family a little more chaotic than the Kantoph family :) Would love to hear your thoughts though, Ronin!

You've treated us to lovely 911 Lone Star inspired work time and time again, but for this Nice Ask Week, I want to know: what are some of your favorite non-fandom works? Do you have a tag for them?

The vast majority of the cross stitching I've done has been fandom related. I learned to cross stitch when I was off work at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, at which time I was obsessed with Schitt's Creek. I completed probably a dozen different Schitt's Creek cross stitch patterns that I bought from Etsy. Then I didn't really pick the hobby back up again until about a year ago when I started making my own Lone Star patterns.

In between fandom pieces, I've done a few non-fandom cross stitch and embroidery pieces here and there. I probably haven't posted many, if any, of them. This actually the only non-fandom cross stitch I can find a picture of on my phone:

And I did post my cross stitch advent calendar as I completed it last December:

I also have a few embroidery pieces that I did in 2020 or 2021...I really would like to get more into embroidery! I've never created my own embroidery pattern before. At least for me, it's a bit more difficult than cross stitch. There are many different kinds of stitches and they don't always turn out well!

Something that I found interesting and awesome about Sally is the fact that she learned to defend herself on her own.

How do you think she would handle herself in the human world during Halloween?

I think Sally would love the freedom of getting to explore the human world! Even more so since it's Halloween, so she can join her fellow monsters and not have to worry about disguising/hiding herself..!

I think she would handle herself well, all things considered! I have a headcanon that she and Jack go out scaring people together on Halloween, and he helps her recognize her strengths in scaring. She definitely terrifies humans with her detachable limbs and sewing herself. Being a living ragdoll might already creep some out as is, so she has a lot going for her. :)

I think she has a blast while also being cautious of herself and her fellow monsters, and helps anyone out when she can! It works to her benefit that her limbs can move on their own and she can always pull herself together, if the worst comes to worst.

I started an etsy shop a couple of weeks ago for my watercolour embroidery patterns. I'm really happy and comfortable with my sewing and patterns, but knew I'd have a bit more difficulty with a couple of other aspects like branding/ marketing/ photos/ etc just because of not having much experience. I've learned loads the last few weeks and I'm really excited to re-take a bunch of photos this weekend with what I've learned. But mainly I wanted to say that doing this has really made me appreciate just how lovely your photos are! I've always loved your patterns- I've sewn a bunch of them myself and have bought a few as gifts for my friends. But just lately I've really noticed how skilled your photos are and how much time and thought you must put into taking them. They’re lovely :)

oh my goodness, thank you so much! And congratulations on opening up a shop! This is the nicest message ever-- I love to try and take cool photos of my cross-stitches, maybe nearly as much as I like to stitch them!

When I was a kid I read a book of anecdotes by a product photographer, and thought he had basically the coolest job ever: once he said he sorted through three whole boxes of cereal (it might've been Chex) for a shoot, picking out only the best pieces to photograph, and then used a bottle of white shoe polish to pour in as 'milk'. I'm not nearly that involved, but I think I'd like to be, someday!

If you're comfortable, I'd love to see some of your pieces! I'm a big fan of watercolor-style patterns, I think it's such a gorgeous style 💛

2. favorite mv moment/frame?

This first one, hands down. Of course I love all frames of my little skrunkly (especially in his little knights outfit :3) but this moment in particular gave me chills. I could write a whole essay on how well Bring it On shows the melding of imagination/reality in a way that isn’t infantilizing. It’s not like a little kid getting carried away thinking of their fake stories, this happens to everyone – this has happened to me. Between the glitching and the beat in the music, this really gut-punched me with the feeling of letting yourself get carried away. Shoutout to the second one because it’s epic and I edited a lockscreen with it for a while. (extra shoutout to when he wipes the blood off his face ough I love that one too)

3. favorite non-mv official illustration?

the pv shot who said that. Lmao I actually really liked the 3rd anniversary art! It really captured that shit eating grin, and somehow maintains the perfect balance of making him look genuinely creepy/intimidating and still like a loser asdfsdf. In general he just looks real good in it :3 I know it’s like three tiny panels but I also love his Clock Over Orquestra look ;-;

4. favorite minigram episode/moment?

THERE’S SO MANY LOL I think it has to be the pause of silence as Amane makes fun of his height, but I’m so obsessed with the starry-eyed panel when he’s watching Yuno do cat’s cradle ;---; (eng versions from thinkin-bout-milgram)

6. favorite relationships with another character in the prison?

In general it’s Yuno, but a lot of that is from my own analysis/brainrot/fic writing 😭 I will never shut up about how his initial impression of violence was revealed to be in her defense, rather than his own aggression!!! They’re very similar and where they’re not, they’re complimentary. They are so special to me. If we’re talking mainly canon, it’s definitely him and Amane :’) Some parts are healthy and healing, some parts are fucking them both up more, but it’s all very fun and interesting. 

2. favorite mv moment/frame?

You’re making me choose??? You’re making me choose only one frame of my beautiful beautiful wife????

Seriously though, this one. I know it may be cliche as her Classic Frame but for someone who really relates to her “out of control” emotions and toxic positivity habits, it really hit hard!! It puts you in her victim's shoes, but still in the mindscape, and is just so unsettling and sad ;-;

3. favorite non-mv official illustration?

Definitely her birthday art! She’s so beautiful and happy in it <3 I love the dress, love the cake, love the flowers, it’s perfect! I enjoy her various anniversary art, but it always makes me sad seeing them try and paint her as creepy. I get it, but the whole point of her character is that there’s nothing literally creepy/mean about her ;--; (Referring to my previous answer, that's how you make her creepy. You put the viewer in her victim's shoes and make her just as cheery as always.)

4. favorite minigram episode/moment?

Her “I bet I could” because she Could!!! I believe in her 😤 It was such a cute minigram overall but after so much canon content of her struggling to keep up with what society/others expect of her I loved seeing her have some confidence in herself, even if it was silly :3 Ahh I also love her keeping up with Kotoko at jumprope! She may be small but she can keep up with the best of ‘em 💪

6. favorite relationships with another character in the prison?

Also Yuno lol! I love how much they care for each other, especially now that Yuno has been looking after her in T2 ;-; In general they make such a cool parallel – they both have crimes related to a partnership with a man, both pay attention to the picture-perfect ideal of a woman that society expects, but are complete opposites regarding honesty/masks. My secret little favorite is Fuuta, but once again that’s really all from headcanoned interactions and parallels 😅

how’s knitting going???

GOOD i finished the body of my sweater & it’s so comfy & cute!!! just gotta knit the sleeves & i’ll be done…had a setback today tho i’ve been using a wikihow article 2 learn how 2 knit this sweater & so far it hasn’t led me wrong but i followed the measurements it suggested for the sleeves & the first one i knitted turned out way too small…waste of like 5 hours….gonna try 2 wing it tomorrow & see if i can use a different method 2 make ones that turn out better <3

#not sure what 2 do w the extra sleeve. could be a leg warmer but i don’t wear skirts 🤧 #anyway. I was originally going to make the scars more healed, with a lighter version: 48 or 69

But found the tear drop beads and just HAD to do it freshly cut.

it felt like a very- angsty fanfic choice, "Let's take my favorite characters' very bad time, and do the worst version of it."

Still might do the healed scars... or (this is a secret) the etsy list comes with 2 pdfs, the straight pattern, and a version with the infernal in black and some words....

in other words I'm going to do this a few more time I think XD
