Free Thai language learning resources

I’ve been learning Thai for the past 20 months. This list is by no means complete or comprehensive, what works for me doesn’t have to work for you, etc etc. That said: I’ve used most of these and found them useful, I thought you might, too. Have fun!

Youtube channels with free video lessons:

There are tons of wonderful teachers on youtube; this is by no means an exhaustive list. The three channels listed here are comprehensive, long-running, and updated regularly; if you have other favourites, please reblog and append!

Comprehensible Thai is a channel that teaches Thai in Thai, from zero, via the comprehensible input method. They have videos from total beginner through upper intermediate/lower advanced levels available.

Learn Thai with Mod – Mod runs a language school that offers good, structured group classes; she and her co-teachers often upload short videos about specific aspects of Thai. The channel has been around for a long time and they cover a lot of topics, including grammar points.

Thai Lessons by New (Learn Thai one Word one Sentence) – lots of good vocabulary and situational phrases

Other channels I like:

Advanced Thai with Kruu Momm -- one of my favourites, Momm’s a star. Not included in the upper list only because this is definitely more of an intermediate-advanced resource.

Thai with Grace -- I knew of Grace via her polyglot channel and travel vlogs before I realised she also teaches Thai. Fun stuff.

Kat talks Thai -- I believe Kat is more active on instagram (@kattalksthai), but these are still really neat.

Honourable mentions because they’re interesting and can be nice supplements (yes, the video titles on these channels tend to be clickbaity, the content is useful, though):

Stu Jay Raj: Stu is a polyglot based in Thailand. His channel is a bit of a mixed bag, but he has a very interesting approach to languages and sometimes does foreign accent reduction / accent analysis sessions on his channel (with consent and participation of those whose speech he dissects).

Thai Talk with Paddy: Paddy is an Australian who learned Thai when he was a volunteer in Thailand, he’s kept it up. Fun things about language learning and culture

Listening comprehension

I’m assuming many folks on here who are interested in Thai already watch some Thai shows (yes I’m stereotyping but also this is tumblr), which means you’re spending time listening to Thai.

If you’re not:

Netflix, Youtube, WeTV, and Viki all have several Thai shows with English subtitles available. The Youtube channel of Thai broadcasting giant GMMTV has English subtitles on nearly all of their uploaded series, some series are also subtitled in languages other than English. one31 is another huge channel; they have English subtitles on some series and some series also have subtitles in Thai. There’s tons more – find a rec list and a Thai show that sounds like you’d enjoy it, chances are you’ll be able to watch it for free, legally, on youtube. You can use the youtube controls (or the ones on netflix) to turn the speed down to 75% —this can make it a lot easier to catch what’s being said. 50% gets so draggy that I personally find it almost harder to understand, but ymmv—give it a shot!

https://lingopolo.org/thai/ has real-life recordings for listening practice; sign-up is required but it’s literally just an e-mail-address, user name and password. Using the site is free.

https://www.activethai.com/ has a section dedicated to learning the tones (under “Overview of Thai Tones”) including a self-test for listening that I found very useful.

Learning to read

I will always, always, ALWAYS recommend learning to read the Thai script. All available romanisations for Thai have drawbacks, and besides, you learned to read English with its “though through thorough tough thought”, you can damn well learn to read Thai. I promise it will help you improve your pronunciation (yes, really) and overall understanding of how the language works.

Learn-to-Read-Thai resources that seem comprehensive and like they should do everything in one:

Anki decks “Read Thai PHASE 1 - The Consonants“, “Read Thai PHASE 2 - Thai Vowels“, “Read Thai PHASE 3 - Consonant Classes” and “Read Thai PHASE 4 - Tone Rules” by Khruu Gaan (ครูกานต์). Anki is probably the most powerful spaced repetition software I have ever used. It’s free on all desktops and android. These decks have sound.

Memrise course “Read Thai: A Complete Guide to Reading Thai“

Other resources I used (In hindsight, I feel like I should’ve picked one resource to learn to read from and stuck with it; I think I was rushing and made things more complicated than need be for myself with my hodgepodge mix-and-match approach. But hey, I can read now.)

https://www.activethai.com/ – the site I started with. Teaches the consonants separated by class and with sound. The only reason this is no longer my top recommendation is that I ended up using this alongside a resource that helped me memorise what the words used to represent the letters actually mean because the site itself didn’t tell me, and I wanted that easy way to have 44 vocabulary words ready as soon as you’re done learning your consonants, and it gives you access to neat mnemonics such as ไก่จิกเด็กตาย(เฎ็กฏาย)บนปากโอ่ง.

In order to better learn to read Thai written in different fonts (modern and handwriting fonts can be tough at first), the Thai Script typographical styles overview on Thai-language.com was a huge help, as was throwing simple phrases things into gdocs and messing around to see how different fonts made them look. This chart from sanukmaak.com also helped.

Speaking and pronunciation

The hardest one for any new language for most folks. For me personally, finding someone who speaks the language and is willing to correct me was an absolute necessity, but I know that’s not always an option. If you’re going it on your own, make sure you check out the resources above for learning to hear the tones and those sounds and sound clusters not present in your own language correctly first.

Things to try on your own:

shadowing: Whenever someone on a show utters a sentence you think might be useful, or provide a useful pattern, or something just sounds cool, rewind and try to speak along as they say it, trying to make it sound as close to their pronunciation as you can.

try to record yourself and listen back -- yes, it’s cringe af but it will HELP.

memorising short sentences and phrases: tying back to the section above, there's a ton of youtube videos that is "phrases to use in [situation]" that are great for targeted learning if you're up for it

self talk (cautiously! don't want to cement bad pronunciation habits)

if you’re linguistically inclined: looking up descriptions on how to make a sound correctly sometimes helps, as does watching videos of folks who’ve successfully learned the language.

once you’ve learned to read: find sentences to read somewhere (twitter, a textbook, whatever) and read them into your phone’s dictation engine. See if the software understands you correctly. Adjust as needed until it does.

Websites and apps to find language partners or (paid) tutors

Like any other app where you ‘meet people’, please exercise caution on these.

italki (mainly for finding tutors and teachers, but you can find language partners on the forums)

Preply (web/app) (for finding tutors/teachers)

hellotalk (app only, iOS/android) for finding language partners -- free to use basic features like messaging, voice rooms, etc; has annoying ads

tandem (app only, iOS/android) for finding language partners -- free to use basic features, has ads

any other app or website that’ll let you meet people, like local facebook groups (yes really), instagram, etc

(note: Neither hellotalk nor tandem allow users to sign up without selecting a binary gender. it sucks. I’ve seen people who managed to circumvent this on Hellotalk by signing up via apple ID (? I think), but it’s hearsay and I have not managed to do so myself.)

Books (a book) that are (is) worth spending money on imo

Higbie & Thinsan: Thai Reference Grammar. The Structure of Spoken Thai. Orchid Press: Bangkok, 2002. Yes, it’s ancient in textbook terms. It’s not perfect, but it’s still the best reference grammar for Thai I’ve come across so far, and I use it frequently.

Random bits and bobs

Stu Jay Raj has two videos in particular that I, as a phonetics-and-phonology-loving person, loved and found extremely useful and wished I’d watched before I started to try and learn the script: Thai Vowels for Dummies in 5 Min v2 - A System Impossible to Forget and Thai Bites Extended Edition - Transliterating Thai using IPA. I realise these may be overwhelming and less helpful for people with no prior phonetics or phonology training, but they helped me so much it’d feel amiss not to include them.

Resources I recommend AGAINST using when starting out

drops/hello words -- seems like their Thai courses have been created using machine translation that wasn’t sufficiently proofread. They will assign you nouns in places of the corresponding verb or false cognates, and that’s within the first 10 or so lessons. Might be useful once the level where a learner can tell “ah, yeah, that’s … not right” has been reached? idk.

transcription as generated by google translate: BURN IT WITH FIRE. it’s a transliteration, i.e. 1-to-1 representation of 1 Thai letter = 1 Latin letter (extended), it’s not phonemic, it’s not going to help ANYONE (and those who can make sense of it presumably already read Thai and would be better off with just Thai script). Just. Stop.

Google translate as a dictionary: still shitty but not AS bad as the transcription function. Still, for the love of all that you hold dear, please, save yourself the pain and confusion and just use thai2english or thai-language.com instead.

I wanted to translate this one post from a Chinese RWRB fan on Weibo that summarized a lot of Taylor did on the day of GQ events and how the fans felt about him, because it’s really sweet

Translation:

Puppy Taylor is really so sincere, and he’s sincere to anyone and everyone

In September during the Ferrari show he met Editor Liu and was invited to the event that didn’t even have a confirmed date. At the time he just said “I’ll come if I have time”. But in the end, he really came, straight after he finished his last event, and took a red-eye flight across the ocean by himself to Shanghai. He went straight to fix his style and fit after the flight and went to attend his friend’s dinner party, and helped said friend’s new magazine gain traction through live stream etc.

The GQ event suggested for guest not to wear Haute couture, some mainland celebrities still did, but Taylor chose a local old brand, and the brand’s passion about being eco-friendly just as he is.

Taylor is also so sincere to his fans. He signed book after book, and took photo after photo. He treasured the gifts fans gave him and carried them himself all the way. When he signs for fans he asks for every single fan's name and tries his best to remember them. Taylor also took photos of the fans, of the oarsman, and of the photographer. He laid down on the bow of the boat to sign for fans. And for the fans who didn’t come, he accepted taking video calls to say hi to them. He made hand hearts with fans, and when a fan asked to hold his hand, he didn’t even hesitate. He wrote “I flew across the ocean to see you” when signing books. He even shaved his facial hair which he kept for a long time to match the taste of the people around him, transforming back to ACD. Taylor sincerely praises every single staff member he crosses paths with and treats them like new friends. He’s spreading happiness with so much passion.

There’s still so much more, Taylor is just such a wonderful person, he’s just the best. 😭

I tried my best with the translation, but I am in no way professional, so please forgive me if it sounds weird (The original post was choppy in Chinese too😅)

The translation of Taylor's name in the original post isn't his official translated name 泰勒 (tài lè, or "thai"-"le") which is just phonic, it's the fan translation 忒樂 (tè lè, or "Tay"-"le" ) which is arguably more phonic and means "too happy"

Regarding the dress code thing, all of Taylor’s outfits from yesterday came from a Chinese local menswear brand that was established in 1980

Regarding his facial hair, the beauty standards of China prefer men to be clean-shaven. If you look at mainland Chinese celebrities of Taylor’s age, unless a role demands it, which is really rare, they rarely keep facial hair. I honestly don’t know if this was the reason Taylor shaved, this part in the post is just speculation, but there is this connection.

Regarding the excessive use of the word sincere, there really isn’t a better word (at least in my vocabulary) to describe what the op meant. But sincerity is a really, really treasured quality to Chinese people

Please understand that Chinese celebrity culture and fan culture is pretty different from Western celebrity culture and fan culture, so certain things they did are viewed differently on this side of the web/ world. A/N: At long last! The end of Danny and sunny's fic, and the very last chapter of the very last cabin fic! It's kind of bittersweet, but this isn't the last we'll see of Danny and sunny or any of the cabin fic couples. I'm so thankful for how much love this fic has gotten, and I hope this chapter is everything you've been hoping for! ♡

It had started to rain when you made it to the restaurant, and you were glad to be ushered to a booth at the window so you could look out at the hazy, wet glow of the streetlights and neon signs of the bar across the street. The restaurant was quiet and nearly empty aside from two or three other couples, and there was nothing to distract from you and Danny and the space you quickly filled up with your own bashfulness.

You were grateful when the waiter came by and took your order. You weren’t surprised that you felt a little awkward with Danny now; you were way too in your head about all the cards being out on the table, and all the ease and familiarity you’d built with him seemed to vanish in a powder as soon as he so much as glanced at you. Wasn’t this crazy? Were you really on a real date with him? Had you really told him you loved him and had you really heard him say it back?

“Hey, sunny.”

You met his eyes. “Yeah?”

“Can you give me another vocabulary word for free?”

You smiled. “Your last one wasn’t free.”

“Oh, right, of course.” He pushed the thai tea you were sharing closer to you. “You liked to be plied with beverages, don’t you?”

“Yes I do,” you agreed. “So, what vocabulary word do you want? Or should I just give you a random one?”

He shook his head. “I need one for a specific feeling.”

“Oh yeah? What feeling?”

“Well, say you were sitting across the table from a really pretty girl...”

You gave a bashful laugh. “And what kind of feelings does that evoke, Daniel?”

He smiled. “Anxiety. Eagerness. A feeling like my heart might jump out of my chest every time I look at her.”

You knew the feeling. You turned the ring he’d given you around on your finger.

“Frisson,” you said after a moment. “That’s your word. It means... a thrill. A sudden strong feeling of excitement or fear.”

“Frisson,” he repeated. He nodded. “You’re pretty good at this sort of thing, sunny.”

He held his hand out on the tabletop and closed his fingers around yours when you put your hand in his.

“Hey,” he said gently.

You met his eyes, shy and so in love with him you could barely stand it. “Hey.”

He squeezed your hand and gave you a warm smile. “Good nervous, right?”

You couldn’t help but smile. “Yeah. Good nervous.” You didn’t regret anything, but you were so thankful that he understood how you felt. “I know it's silly. I’m trying not to be.”

“It’s okay if you are,” he said. “I am too. We’ll just be awkward for a little while. No big deal.”

“Ideal for a first date,” you teased.

He shrugged, a charming grin tugging at the corner of his mouth. “My ideal first date is with you,” he said. “So however it goes, I’m not complaining.”

Your food came, and you pressed your hand to the side of your bowl of tom kha and shivered.

Danny chuckled. “Are you cold?”

“I think it’s a psychological thing,” you said. “You know, warm bowl of soup, rainy night outside — it only seems right to be cold.”

“Well,” he said, around a bite of pad thai, “you have a perfectly nice boyfriend over here who’s willing to keep you warm.”

You blushed, but you couldn’t resist a little needling. “You should probably know that sitting on the same side of the booth is a dealbreaker for me.”

He laughed. “I’m with you, actually. Otherwise you’re having to sit sideways to talk.”

“Right!” you said. “And you’re both looking at nothing but an empty booth.”

“That’s what I’m saying,” he agreed. “I’d much rather look at you.”

You touched a nervous, fluttery hand to your hair you’d put up in a bun. “In all my shining glory, huh?”

He smiled, and there was something so natural and kind in it that you knew it was sincere.

“You kind of do have a shining glory right now,” he said. He looked around at the dim, quiet restaurant and then back at you. “The lights are giving you a sort of halo. Very angelic.”

“How angelic would it be if I stole some of your food?”

He pushed his plate towards you. “Please, have as much as you want.”

You sat in companionable silence for a few minutes while you enjoyed your first official dinner date. You thought of what he’d said about keeping you warm, what he’d called himself; you grew a little restless, feeling bashful and nervous the more you thought about it.

“Hey, Danny?”

“Hm?”

You toyed with the handle of your spoon. “You know what you said a few minutes ago? About... me having a perfectly nice boyfriend to keep me warm?”

He raised a brow, but the corner of his mouth tipped up too. “Yeah?”

You felt your face heat. “Well, are we... I mean, I know we said... but do you want to be...?”

He gave a soft laugh, but you knew he wasn’t being unkind. He took your hand.

“You don’t have to watch your words with me, sunny,” he said. “Just tell me what you’re thinking.”

You squeezed his hand. “Do you want to be my boyfriend? Officially?”

He ran the pad of his thumb over the ring he’d given you.

“Yes,” he said with a sweet smile. “Yes, sunny. I want to be your boyfriend, officially, and I want you to be my girlfriend, and I want...” He pinked. “Well, we have a lot of time to figure out the rest. But I know I love you, and I know I want to be your partner.”

You felt a thrill of pleasure at the words, and you loved that he was already thinking about your future together.

“Me too,” you said. “I love you too, Danny.”

He gave you a teasing smile. “You know, if we weren’t on opposite sides of the booth, we could be kissing right now.”

You bit your lip at the thought. “Tempting. Still a dealbreaker, though.”

He laughed. “I love you very much, sunny.”

You were certain you’d never felt happier in your entire life. “I love you very much too.”

You lingered long after you’d gotten the check, talking about everything and nothing; as he’d promised it would, the awkwardness eventually gave way to the comforting familiarity of two friends in love with each other. It was so easy and wonderful just to be with him, and you could hardly believe he wanted this with you as much as you wanted it with him.

Danny took the receipt, and when he uncapped the pen, you knew without having to ask what he was going to draw on the back of it.

“What are they doing tonight?” you asked, leaning forward a little to try and see what he was drawing.

He blocked your view with his hand, and you smiled.

“Are they doing something inappropriate?” you teased. “Please me you’re not drawing stick-figure sex, Danny.”

He smirked. “You’d like that, wouldn’t you?”

You laughed. “Yes, you got me. That’s what cranks my tractor.”

He chuckled and finished his drawing with a scrawl of words across the top. He slid the receipt across the table to you. “There you go. Happy first date.”

You felt a girlish blush creep into your cheeks at that, and you looked over his drawing with a soft smile. He was a talented doodler, you had to admit; the stick figure couple was at what you guessed was a wedding, fairy lights strung above them and wine glasses in hand. They were giving each other a goofy kiss and a few hearts floated above them. The words stretching over the scene were from your Cat Stevens song — The wedding took place and people came from many miles around; there was plenty merriment, cider and wine abound. But out of all that I recall I remembered the girl I met, ‘cause she had given me something that my heart could not forget.

“I’m glad you didn’t have a lighter at the funeral,” he said.

You smiled. “Me too. And I’m glad we somehow ended up at the same wedding the next day.”

He grinned. “It does kinda seem like fate, doesn’t it?” He laced his fingers with yours. “I’ll go to weddings with you as long as you’ll let me, sunny.”

“Well, we’re already on our fourth,” you said, tracing an affectionate finger over your stick figure couple. “It’s kind of our thing now.”

He smiled. “Yeah, I guess it is.”

It was pouring by the time you got to your apartment, and despite Danny’s best efforts to hold his jacket over your head while you fumbled with your keys, you both ended up soaked. Neither of you seemed to mind, though, laughing and wiping the rain from your faces as you came inside.

“Could you call this a gullywasher?” he asked, brushing his damp curls out of his face.

You grinned. “Hey, you remembered! I’ll make a vocabulary scholar out of you yet, Daniel.”

You stood on tiptoe to give him a kiss, and though you’d only intended for it to be a quick one, he responded with such eagerness that you would have stood in your doorway and kissed him for the rest of your life if you could have. The two of you stood together, dripping onto your floor, completely lost in each other as the rain fell outside.

He put his tongue in your mouth, and your breath caught on a little whine. You felt his reaction shiver through his whole body, a rush of confidence and pleasure in his touch as he pushed the door closed and backed you up against it.

He let you come up for air after a minute, and his lips were pink and shiny from kissing you.

“Danny,” you said, soft, breathless.

He tucked your hair behind your ear. “Yes, sunny?”

You blushed. “I’ve never, um... never brought a guy back to my apartment,” you admitted. “I don’t really know what I’m doing with this kind of thing. I’m sorry.”

“You don’t have to apologize, sweetheart.” He gave you a gentle kiss. “We’ll do whatever you want to do.”

“Well, but... what do you want to do?”

He cupped your jaw and brushed his thumb over your bottom lip. “Doesn’t matter what I want to do, sunny. If it would make you feel better to know, I’m over the moon to do literally anything with you. But what I want you to worry about is what you want to do.”

“You’d be down for anything?” you teased. “You're telling me there’s nothing you wouldn’t do with me right now?”

“Mmhm,” he said, a little distracted, pressing gentle kisses to your jaw and the corner of your mouth. “We can fuck nasty or go to Disney World or jump on the bed or decorate your whole apartment for Halloween. I don’t care.”

The laugh that bubbled out of you only grew the more options he gave you, and you were shaking with laughter as he kissed you again.

“None of those, then?” he said with a soft laugh.

You draped your arms over his shoulders and let him hold you. “Maybe we can find a middle ground.”

“Suits me, sunny. I’m gonna have to run to the store if we pick anything close to the first one, though.”

“I’m on birth control,” you said. “So you don’t have to unless you want to. Though I am surprised you didn’t come prepared for this trip.”

He chuckled, and his breath was warm against your skin. “Messing around with bridesmaids isn’t really my style,” he said. “And I wasn’t counting on you, sweetheart.”

You gave a pleased hum. “Aren’t you glad you found me, though?”

He smiled and wrapped his arms around you. “Yes, I am.”

He held you close and kissed you, and you stayed that way for a long while. You felt how it affected him to be so close to you, and you flushed with pleasure to know he wanted you, but it also made you a little nervous.

You worked up enough courage to tell him, or at least try. “Danny?”

He hummed and kissed your throat. “What is it, sunny?”

“I, um... I need to tell you something.”

He pulled back and studied your face, gentle and patient. “Okay. Tell me.”

You absently ran your fingers over the string of pearls around his neck, hesitant, shy.

He brushed his thumb in a soothing, repetitive motion over your hip. “Have you ever been with somebody, sunny? Is that it?”

You blushed vividly. “S-sort of,” you said, unable to meet his eyes. “I mean, I’ve... only a few times. Not many.”

You could count on one hand the times you’d slept with someone, all of them with a guy in college you would hesitate to call a boyfriend. He’d been pushy and less than gentle, and it had left you with very little knowledge of how sex was supposed to be. You knew it would be different with Danny; you had no doubt about that. But you still didn’t have a lot to go on.

Danny put a finger under your chin and tipped your face up towards his.

“Hey,” he said. “Look at me.”

You did as he said, embarrassed, seeing nothing but kindness in his gaze.

“We don’t have to do anything if you don’t want to,” he said, and you knew he meant it. “I’m not in any rush. I want you to feel comfortable with everything we do, and if that means we don’t do anything, I’m more than happy to not do anything.”

“I want to,” you said softly. “I just... wanted you to know that I’m not some kind of sex expert. If that’s what you were hoping for.”

He chuckled. “I was hoping for you, sweetheart. But thank you for telling me. It doesn’t change my mind about anything.”

You were surprised at how relieved you felt. “I love you, Danny.”

He gave you a gentle kiss. “Sweetheart. I love you too.”

The two of you made your way to the laundry room to put your wet clothes on to dry, and when you stood with him half-dressed in your dark apartment and listened to the sound of the rain and the gentle hum of the dryer, he asked if you wanted to shower together.

“No pressure,” he said. “And I’ll wash your hair for you.”

You smiled. “Deal.”

Under the spray of the warm water and by the light of a few flickering candles, he kissed you with a slow, patient gentleness. You skated your hands over each other, leaning into the intimacy that felt as easy as breathing. You let your hands wander, and you loved the little gasp you drew out of him.

“Sunny,” he breathed. “You don’t... uh, you don’t have to. If you don’t want to.”

You pressed closer and kissed him. “I want to,” you said. “Can you.... can you show me how?”

Even in the dim light, you saw how he blushed. “S-sure.” He swallowed when you moved your hand. “But I don’t — oh.” A little groan tumbled out of him. “I don’t think you need me to.”

You didn’t, not really — aside from a few gentle remarks to direct you, the only thing that came out of Danny’s mouth were words of praise and soft, lovely groans of pleasure. You’d never thought a man could be so beautiful like this, nor had you thought that you’d ever really enjoy it, but it was so different with Danny. You loved him and basked in his delight, mirroring his shudder of pleasure when he unraveled completely.

“I love you,” he breathed, holding you close and showering your face with kisses. “Thank you. I love you.”

You beamed up at him and rested against him, feeling his heartbeat hammer in his chest, loving the way his kisses were warm and gentle and deep with his affection for you. He lathered both of you with your peppermint soap and washed your body gently; he washed your hair for you, as promised, and he took his time to help you relax under his attentive touch.

You held his wrists when he cupped your face in his big hands and kissed you.

“Take me to bed, Danny,” you said softly.

He smiled. “Yes ma’am.”

You were still cold when you were toweled off, and Danny went to get his sweater from the dryer for you. You let him help you into it and snuggled into the huge, warm sweater, gladly accepting the kisses he showered you with as he did.

“Can we just lay together for a little bit?” you asked.

“Sure we can, sunny.”

You lay tangled together under the blankets, stealing gentle kisses, brushing your fingers through each other’s damp hair. You felt yourself warm to your desire, his gentleness and patience easing your bashful nervousness, and you didn’t stop him when his big, warm hand moved between your legs.

“Danny,” you breathed.

“Does this feel okay, sunny?” he asked gently.

You nodded and pulled him closer to kiss him. “Please.”

You felt his smile, and he kissed you and caught your moans as he worked his fingers slowly and skillfully over your heat.

“Danny,” you gasped.

“I’m right here, sweet girl,” he said, his voice low with pleasure and desire. “You sound so pretty, sunny. Can you keep singing like that for me?”

He made sure you did, drawing you to a languid high like a slow wave crashing against the shore. You shuddered underneath him, and he drew you close and kept you in his arms.

“You’re so beautiful, sunshine,” he said softly. “Thank you for letting me be with you like this. I love you.”

Emotion made your chest tight, and your voice was barely above a whisper when you said it back. “I love you too, Danny.” It didn’t seem like enough just to say it, and you moved to straddle him and kiss him deeper.

“I love you,” you said again. You showered his face with kisses, and he ran his hands under his sweater you still wore, holding your hips, tracing circles against your skin.

You cradled his face in your hands, and he looked up at you with nothing short of adoration.

“God, you’re so beautiful,” he said softly. “I love you, sunshine. Please don’t break my heart.”

A few tears did fall, then. He gave you a wobbly smile and brushed them from your face.

“Aw, honey. I didn’t mean to make you cry.”

You hugged his neck and loved the feeling of his arms around you, strong and steady and safe.

“I’m never going to break your heart, and you’re never going to break mine, and we’re going to live happily ever after,” you said. “I promise.”

He breathed a laugh and leaned his head against yours. “Okay, sunny. I promise too.”

You let him hold you for a while, and you only pulled back enough to kiss him. He propped himself up further against the pillows, and you gasped when you felt him against your heat.

“Danny.”

He chuckled. “What is it, sweetheart?”

“I... I want you inside me.”

“Okay, baby,” he said gently. “Lift up a little, and you can do it yourself.”

You blushed. “You don’t want to be on top?”

“I want whatever you want,” he reminded you. “And I think it’ll be more comfortable for you this way. You can go as slow as you want.”

You kissed him. “Thank you.”

He gave you a gentle smile. “You don’t have to thank me, sunny. I love you.”

You lifted your hips and slowly lowered back down, taking him fully, both of you breathing a choked sigh when you were settled.

“I love you too,” you breathed.

You rocked against him, and he kissed the sighs from your mouth as his hands skimmed over your flushed skin. The feeling of him inside you was unlike any pleasure you'd ever felt; you knew would never be able to tell him just how much you loved the intimacy and vulnerability of being so close to him.

He let you set the pace, but every once in a while his control would slip, and you shivered with pleasure when he pulled you closer and kissed you. It was slow until it wasn’t, and for all the gentleness between you, you felt yourself coming to your high with an almost overwhelming quickness.

“Danny, I’m — ” You gripped his shoulders, your breath catching. “I’m close.”

“Good girl,” he praised in a low voice, and you couldn’t have kept yourself from going over the edge if you’d tried. You were almost embarrassed at the whines that tumbled out of you, but he was looking up at you with such adoration and pleasure, and you’d never felt more beautiful in all your life.

“Sunny, sunny,” he breathed. “You’re perfect. I love you so much.”

You pressed close and kissed him deeply. “I love you, Danny.”

He groaned when you kept rocking against him. “Baby, you — you gotta stop if — ”

You hushed him with a kiss. “I want you inside, lover.”

A shaky breath escaped him. “Call me that again.”

You smiled and brushed your fingers through his soft curls. “Come on, lover. Show me how good it feels.”

He dug his fingers into your hips, and you felt that familiar pleasure wind tight in your belly again just looking at him. When his fingers started to wander, you were surprised at how eagerly your body responded to his touch.

“Oh, Danny,” you gasped. “I —I don’t know if I can — ”

“Yes you can,” he said, and the gravelly desire of his voice made your breath catch. “With me, sweetheart. Come on.”

Both of you came undone, and in the hazy bliss of the afterglow, you rested your head in the crook of his neck and loved it when he held you close.

“Okay, sweetheart?” he asked quietly, running a hand over your back. “I didn’t mean to push you at the end.”

You kissed his jaw. “No, I’m glad you did. I’ve never...” You blushed. “Not that quickly, anyway.”

You liked the pleased smirk he wore, figuring he’d earned the right to be a little smug, but it quickly eased to a warm, genuine smile when you kissed him.

“I love you,” he said. “Thank you for trusting me.”

You pressed a kiss to his shoulder. “Thank you for being someone I can trust.”

You kissed for a while longer, and when he eventually eased you off of him, he went to the bathroom to get a warm washcloth to clean you up with. His touch was gentle and chaste, and he pulled you close under the covers when you were clean and snug and sleepy.

He gave you a soft smile as you tried to keep your eyes open.

“Go to sleep, sunny,” he said softly. “I’m not going anywhere.”

You tipped your face up towards him. “Goodnight kiss.”

He did as you asked. “Goodnight, sunshine. I love you.”

You gave a sleepy sigh and snuggled closer. “I love you too.”

The morning sun was gentle when you woke, and though Danny wasn’t in bed next to you, you saw a small collection of things on your nightstand you knew he must have put there. You sifted through it and saw the doodle of your stick-figure couple from the first wedding, the seashell with the heart-shaped hole in it, his drawing of his drum kit, the photo strip of the two of you, and the doodle-covered receipt from dinner the night before. The last one was new, a bright pink sticky note undoubtedly from your desk, showing a drawing of a smiley face made out of bacon and two fried eggs.

wakey wakey eggs and bacey (bakey? how tf do you spell that?) it read, and it made you laugh. come get breakfast and a kiss!!

You carefully put the newest note with the rest of your collection in the drawer of your nightstand, slipping on a pair of underwear and keeping Danny’s sweater that you’d slept in. You followed the aroma of coffee and found your boyfriend in your kitchen in nothing but his black boxers.

You couldn’t think of anything to say, the “good morning” you’d had on the tip of your tongue dying a quick death as you were momentarily stunned by your incredibly beautiful boyfriend and your incredibly wonderful life with him in it.

He turned from the stove and seemed struck with the same wonder when he saw you. His eyes were wide as he took you in, a delighted smile brightening his whole face.

“Hi,” he said.

You smiled. “Hi.”

“I think I’m experiencing that vocabulary word again,” he said with a grin. “Frisson, right?”

You laughed. “Yeah. Me too.”

He leaned down to kiss you as you came close, and for a moment, the two of you lost yourself in kissing each other good morning.

“Coffee’s ready,” he said, when he finally let you come up for air. “And breakfast will be soon. You don’t actually have any bacon so I can’t make you a smiley face, sorry.”

You gave a dramatic sigh as you fixed your coffee. “What’s the point of even having breakfast, then?”

He chuckled and handed you your plate when you sat on the counter next to the stove.

“Sam and birdie invited us for lunch this afternoon,” he reminded you. “I didn’t say for sure if we were coming because we didn’t really talk about it, but we should have time before our flights.”

“I’d like to go,” you said. You didn’t like the reminder that he was leaving today, and you almost didn’t ask, but you knew you couldn’t just ignore it. “What time is your flight?”

“Four.” He glanced over at you. “I can miss it, sunny.”

You shook your head. “And then what?” you asked. The thought of him leaving made your chest feel tight, and you hid it poorly. “It might be tomorrow or the day after, but you’ll still have to leave.”

“Hey, hey.” He moved to stand between your legs, wrapping his arms around you. “Don’t be upset, sunny. It’s okay. We’ll figure it out.”

You bit the inside of your cheek and brushed his curls behind his ear.

“I’m sorry,” you said. “I’m not trying to pitch a fit. I know you have to leave. I just... don’t want you to.”

He gave you a sad smile. “I know, baby,” he said gently. “I don’t want to leave either. And I can stay for a few more days if that’s okay with you — I don’t have to be back to work until Monday. But even when I leave, we’re gonna figure this out. We won’t be long distance forever.”

“I didn’t even think about it,” you admitted quietly. “I guess because it doesn’t matter, really. I want to be with you even if we have to be long distance for a little while.”

“Me too, sweetheart.” He kissed you. “Should I stay for a few more days?”

You hugged him close. “Stay as long as you can.”

Just landed :)

You couldn’t stop the giddy smile that his text drew out, putting your phone in your pocket and looking eagerly towards the opposite end of baggage claim even though you knew he wouldn’t be there for a while yet. You felt like your heart might beat out of your chest, and you had to keep yourself from running through the whole airport just to get to him.

It had only been a week since he’d flown back home, and you’d called and texted almost nonstop since he’d left, but you were so excited to be with him again. You’d decided that you’d be together on weekends, when both of you were off of work, and you’d alternate between your apartment and his. When the school year ended for you, you’d make more concrete plans; for now, both of you gave new meaning to the phrase “living for the weekend”. It wasn’t ideal, but both of you were willing to make it work.

You checked your phone again to see if he’d texted you an update, but there were no new messages; you bounced on your heels and looked to the steady stream of people filing into baggage claim to get their luggage.

Then, in the sea of people, you saw that familiar broad frame and that dark, beautiful head of curls, and it felt like the fourth of July in your chest.

“Danny!” you called, all but running through the crowd to get to him. He turned at your voice, looking for you, and grinned when he saw you; he dropped his bag and caught you to him, holding you in a bear hug right there in the middle of the airport.

“I love you, I love you, I love you,” you said, kissing his face as he held you.

He laughed and let you shower him with kisses as he hugged you tighter.

“I love you too, sunny,” he said. “Are you happy to see me?”

You gave him a beaming smile. “What do you think?”

After a last kiss, he set you down and gathered his things, taking you by the hand.

“Do you remember that thing you said at our first wedding?” you asked as you walked. “When the bride was walking down the aisle?”

He gave you a bemused tilt of his head. “No. What did I say?”

You remembered how pretty he’d been at that wedding, all stained-glass rainbows and big sweet smiles, and you knew that you’d loved him even then. You’d loved him when you were kids and you loved him now, and you were so thankful for whatever thread of fate had brought you together.

“You told me to look at the groom,” you said. “You said his love was plain as day on his face. ‘The look of his best and longest love.’.”

Danny smiled. “Oh, yeah. I remember.” He put his arm around your waist and pulled you close. “You should be pretty familiar with that look by now, sunny.”

You blushed and beamed up at him. “Tell me I’m your best and longest love, Danny.”

He smiled and leaned down to give you a kiss. “You’re my best and longest love, sunny.”

You kissed him back. “You’re my best and longest love too.”

Info for writer in Thai series fandom: Cultural differences in each area

Depending on what we want to talk about, we can divine it in a variety of ways. Now that we're talking about culture, I'll use the one divided into four sections, as shown in this map.

These four are Northern, Northeastern (Isan), Central, and Southern.

The majority of the series are set in Bangkok, which is in Central Thailand, so that is what you usually see.

Language

Our official language is Central Thai, but we have quite a lot of others. Northern Thai (Khammueang) from the north, Isan from the northeast, and Southern Thai from the south are the most popular in each area If we don't count the official one.

Kham Muang has a similar grammar, only a little different from the Central Thai language, but uses different vocabulary. Originally used in conjunction with the Tham Lanna script, which is the alphabet of the Lanna Kingdom that uses the Mon alphabet as a model, Kham Muang can be divided into Western Lanna accents. (in Chiang Mai, Lamphun, and Mae Hong Son) and an Eastern Lanna accent (in Chiang Rai, Phayao, Lampang, Uttaradit, Phrae, and Nan), which are partially different.

The Isan language, or Isan Lao language, is a local development of the Lao language in Thailand. Local speakers still think of it as Laotian. The Thai government recognizes this language as one of a Thai language.

Southern Thai has a high concentration of language speakers in the fourteen provinces of southern Thailand. Some are scattered in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. Tanintharyi Region in Myanmar and around Kedah State, Perlis State, Penang State, and Perak State in northern Malaysia. There are about five million native speakers, and about 1.5 million use it as a second language. These include Chinese, Peranakan, Malay, Uraklavoi, and Mani ethnic groups.

They each have their own subset of accents and dialects.

We also have "copper language(ภาษาทองแดง)," which the Dictionary of Southern Dialects B.E. 2525(1982) mentions as a way to speak where the speaker is "speaking a central Thai language mixed with a southern language or speaking distorted," which includes anyone who uses the Thai language in a way that deviates from the standard set, not limited to being a person in any region or province.

I've heard a lot of stories about people from an area that doesn't use Central Thai that have misunderstand some sentences as being in the actual Central Thai language. But it's actually not, and it just contains Central Thai words, but not in the same way that people in Central Thailand would understand them as Central Thai. So when they moved to Central Thailand for any reason, they'd use them and expect Central Thai people to understand them a certain way, and they had to find out in an inconvenient way.

Central = to take someone to their destination but not stay with them after doing so.

Northern = to take someone to their destination, stay with them throughout whatever activity they intend to do there, then go back together.

As I said at the beginning, Central Thai is our official language, so that is the language that is taught in school. Other languages are usually taught by unofficial means, so it is not uncommon for the new generation to not be able to speak them fluently even when they come from a household that does. But sometimes everyone in the area speaks the other language, so even the teacher in school who is supposed to teach kids central Thai is not that fluent in it. It can be that case too.

As a person who only knows Central Thai, I can recognize some popular words in the others and understand some words that sound just a bit different, but if someone truly speaks in those languages, I will likely be unable to follow the conversation.

In the clip below, at 17.30, they use a word play with Isan and Central. Kha (ค่า) means worth, while Kha (ข่า) means galangal. In a Central Thai accent, these two words will have different tones, but in an Isan accent, Kha (ข่า) will sound just like Kha (ค่า) in Central Thai.

Food

Most northern dishes have a mild flavor. Fermented soybeans are commonly used in cooking. There are many types of chili paste. The carbohydrate sources are mainly glutinous rice.

Isan food has a distinctive taste that is salty from fermented fish sauce, spicy from fresh and dried chili, and sour from local vegetables such as tamarind. Isan people use pickled fish as a seasoning for almost all kinds of food, such as bamboo shoot soup, om, mok, and various chili pastes, as well as papaya salad, for example. The menu focuses mainly on seasonal vegetables. The carbohydrate sources are mainly glutinous rice.

The central region has long been a trading center and has been in contact with foreign countries for a long time, causing food to be influenced by many nations. And, as the King's residence during various reigns, the recipes have been developed to be meticulous. The taste of food will not focus on any particular flavor. It must be salty, spicy, sour, and sweet together to be considered good, variety of flavorings are used to achieve that. Coconut milk is used in many foods. The carbohydrate sources are mainly rice.

The southern region is the region with the most coastal areas. There is seafood as the main food. It is cooked with herbs to mask the fishy smell, especially turmeric. The taste is quite strong, and many dishes have vegetables to eat along with it to reduce the spiciness. The carbohydrate sources are mainly rice.

Geography

for geography, we usually divide it into six parts.

North

Most of the terrain consists of mountain ranges interspersed with plains and valleys.

The most important mountain ranges are Luang Prabang, Dan Lao, Thanon Thong Chai, Phi Pan Nam, Khun Tan, and Phetchabun Mountain Range.

Cities located in the basin area, such as Chiang Mai, are often facing serious air pollution problems.

The highest peak in the north and in the country is Doi Inthanon.

It is the headwaters of Thailand's four major rivers, namely the Ping, Wang, Yom, and Nan.

Central

It is a river plain. It is split into upper and lower central sections.

The upper central region has a high- and low-Undulating Plain landscape.

The Ping River and Nan River flow together at Pak Nam Pho, which is the source of the Chao Phraya River.

The lower central region is a wide plain formed by river sediments, suitable for cultivation.

Northeast

The terrain is mostly plateaus and mountain ranges.

There are Dong Phaya Yen Mountain Range, Phetchabun Mountain Range, Phanom Dong Rak Mountain Range, and San Kamphaeng Mountain Range.

It has the Chi and Mun rivers, which are important rivers that flow into the Mekong River.

Eastern region

The terrain consists of river plains and coastal plains.

There are Khao Banthat and Chanthaburi mountains in the middle of the region.

There are lined islands such as Koh Chang, Koh Kood, Koh Sichang, Koh Lan.

Prachinburi Province and Sa Kaeo are not connected to the sea. The region's other provinces all have seaports.

Western Region

The terrain is mountainous, with alternating plains and valleys similar to those in the north.

Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan are connected to the sea.

Thanon Thongchai and Tanaosri are significant mountain ranges.

It is the origin of the Kwai Noi River (Sai Yok) and Khwae Yai River (Si Sawat), which converge to form the Mae Klong River in Kanchanaburi before flowing into the sea.

South

The terrain is mountainous along the peninsula.

The important mountain ranges are the Phuket Mountain Range, the Nakhon Si Thammarat Mountain Range, and the Sankalakhiri Mountain Range.

It is a natural border between Thailand and Malaysia.

Most of the rivers are short. The longest line is the Tapi River.

There is an open lake (lagoon), Songkhla Lake. It is one of the largest in Southeast Asia.

Northern

If you remember the Yi Peng Festival in Chapter 6, it is a Northern tradition.

Tan Tung(ตานตุง)

Tan is to offer/dedicate

Tung is a kind of flag

Tan Tung is a form of merit making. A Buddhist ceremony. The flag that will be hung is the most noticeable difference from other region ceremonies.

Spirit

In the north, there are many spirits worshiped in a culture that people in other regions just not do.

Phi Arak(อารักษ์-guard) has a duty to protect the country and the community.

Phi Khun Nam(ขุนน้ำ-stream from a top of mountain) is responsible for providing water to the fields.

Phi Fai(ฝาย-weir,dam) is responsible for protecting the city of Weir.

Phi Sop(สบ-meet) Nam(น้ำ-water) or Phi Pak Nam(ปากน้ำ-estuary, mouth of a river) are responsible for protecting the area where two rivers meet.

The word "phi(ผี-ghost)" has a negative connotation in central, but in the north, it refers to all spirits, including the sacred spirit or god.

Life Prolonging Ceremony

It means to make one's life auspicious, to live comfortably and free from all diseases, and to prosper forever.

If you want to search for their traditional dance, ฟ้อน (Fon) is the word.

Northeastern (Isan)

Phaya Tan(พญาแถน)

Phaya Tan is a word for gods in the Isan region. The highest Tan is called Tan Luang and is believed to be Indra in other regions.

Naga

Naga is a prominent figure in Isan. I have been repeatedly told that many Isan people believe in Naga existence.

The Boon Bang Fai, or Rocket Festival, is a large festival held to honor Phaya Tan, with an origin story involving Naga.

People from Isan considered the time this festival occurred as a time they should return home and meet with their family and friends in their hometown.

There are glowing balls that occasionally rise from the Mekong River that people call Naga fireballs. They are believed to be fireballs that Naga spits out from under the river.

หมอลำ-Mor lam is a type of music from Isan that is a big genre of music in Thailand.

If you want to search for their traditional dance, เซิ้ง (Serng) is the word.

Southern

Nang Talung-หนังตะลุง is a type of shadow play, one of the local performing arts of the South.

Nora โนรา

Nora dance, in my opinion, is both an art and a superstition. I'm not sure where it came from, but I've heard about how some Nora practitioners treat it like mediumship, saying that if they are chosen by the spirit, there is no way to say no (to the way of living as a Nora performer).

In Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, and Satun, as well as parts of Songkhla and Chumphon, the majority of the population is Muslim. Because Thai Muslims and Thai Buddhists have some cultural differences, there are some noticeable differences in the area where Thai Muslims are more prevalent when compared to the rest of the country. However, even when they are a minority in other areas, they are still dispersed throughout the country, with the largest number of residents in Bangkok, so I would say that the culture in those areas will likely still be familiar enough to most people.

In the south, saltwater fisheries are much higher than in other regions due to the geographical location that is adjacent to the sea on both sides. This has resulted in differences in eating culture and other aspects of daily life in the South.

Most of the things you see in the series and from me are based in central Thailand, so I will skip it.

Example :

The protagonist of Siew Sum Noi is from Isan, as is Vee from Love Mechanics.

Country Boy takes place in the north.

Sky in Your Heart and A Tale of a Thousand Stars begin their story in Bangkok and then move the location to the north.

I Told Sunset About You is set in the South.

TinnGun Aquarium Date: Where Did Tinn’s Sharks Suddenly Come From and How Are They Connected to Liking Gun?

So in episode 7 when TinnGun go on the aquarium date with Yo and his girl there is a bit of dialogue that really confused me back when the episode aired. And maybe it confused you too. So now I’m here to share some background information with you.

I’m talking about this specific line:

Back when the episode aired I just didn’t understand why Tinn was suddenly talking about sharks when he had just been referencing their date. Where did that thought suddenly come from? What’s the connection between those topics, how did Tinn get from their date to sharks and biting to liking Gun?

Well, you see, I wasn’t able to follow because I had completely forgotten about one key element here: ฉลามชอบงับคุณ (= “sharks like biting you”) is a song by Bonnadol ft. IIVY B and Tinn is directly quoting the first line of the chorus to Gun. Cue the ensuing jokes about sharks and liking and biting.

Now you might see this and think “Ohhh so it’s a song reference and that song suddenly popped into Tinn’s mind so that’s why he’s randomly changing the topic. Plus, the song talks about sharks and liking so that’s how Tinn made the mental jump from ‘sharks may bite you’ to ‘I like you’. Got it, thanks.” and, well... yes. That’s the short answer. However, there is more to discover in this scene and more word play going on in Thai.

So come with me on a deep dive into the dialogue of this scene and find out what exactly is happening here in Thai.

We’re gonna take a closer look at Ep7 [3/4] from 10:10 onwards till pretty much the end of the scene. The given English translation of the dialogue goes as follows:

Tinn: Sharks, they may bite you. But I like you, no bite. Gun: Are you flirting or what? Here. Let me tell you something. If you want to hit on someone, use your own line. (laughs) Sharks, they may bite you. (Tinn steals Gun’s snack) Tinn: Sharks, they like to bite. I do too, but only the one I like. Gun: Bite, my ass! (laughs and shakes his head) Tinn: Look at you now. I bet you like the one that bites you.

Before we go and take a closer look at what is hidden in the original Thai lines, let me give you a quick vocabulary lesson, though:

ครับ [kráp] – often also transliterated as krub. If you’re an experienced thdrama watcher you are likely familiar with this word. But if you’re new here: ครับ [kráp] is a particle that is added at the end of a sentence to make that sentence formal and polite. ครับ [kráp] is typically used by men, while women typically use ค่ะ [khâ] instead. (You’ll also hear this particle as an answer to or confirmation of a statement/request/order/etc., but this isn’t relevant for the scene we’re about to discuss.)

ชอบ [chôp] – to like. If you’re an experienced thdrama watcher you’ve also heard this one a lot. However, what you might not know is that this word can also be used to talk about a habit or about what someone/something tends to do. Earlier I translated the song title ฉลามชอบงับคุณ [chà-lăam chôp ngáp kun] as “sharks like biting you” but it could also mean something like “sharks tend to bite you”. (word for word the title makes shark(s) – like/tend to – bite{cute} – you{formal})

ผม [pŏm] – formal/polite first person pronoun for males (I)

คุณ [kun] – formal/polite second person pronoun (you)

งับ [ngáp] – cutesy word for “to bite”

Part 1: The Song

Now with that out of the way I want to take a look at the first line of the chorus from the song:

ฉลามน่ะชอบงับคุณ ส่วนผมน่ะชอบคุณงับ [chà-lăam nâ chôp ngáp kun • sùuan pŏm nâ chôp kun ngáp]

So this line is made up of two sentences:

ฉลามน่ะชอบงับคุณ [chà-lăam nâ chôp ngáp kun]: This is the first sentence and translates to “sharks tend to bite you” or “sharks like biting you” which is also the song’s title.

ส่วนผมน่ะชอบคุณงับ [sùuan pŏm nâ chôp kun ngáp]: This is the second sentence and translates to “as for me, I like you”.

So here we can immediately see how talking about sharks and biting leads to talking about liking someone and it’s through the repeated use of the word ชอบ [chôp] aka “to like”. First the singer talks about what sharks like (biting), then the singer talks about what he himself likes (“you”).

But there’s more!

Maybe you’ve already noticed that there is another word from our vocabulary lesson that is repeated in both sentences:

ฉลามน่ะชอบงับคุณ ส่วนผมน่ะชอบคุณงับ [chà-lăam nâ chôp ngáp kun • sùuan pŏm nâ chôp kun ngáp]

Yes, the word งับ [ngáp] gets repeated as well. Now you might be a little confused, because I just told you that this translates to the verb “bite” and I also just said that the second sentence translates to “as for me, I like you”. How does the biting fit into this sentence?

Well, so the thing is… Remember the very first word from our list? Remember ครับ [kráp]? Maybe you’ve also noticed that I put it on the vocabulary list, but then it doesn’t even show up in the song lyrics at all...

Except, it does! It just doesn’t look or sound like ครับ [kráp]. It sounds like งับ [ngáp], aka the word that I just pointed out that also gets repeated in both lines.

So, as you might have guessed by now งับ [ngáp] can either be a cute way of saying “to bite” or it can also be used as a cutesy word for the polite particle ครับ [kráp]. Tinn has already used งับ [ngáp] in this sense on Gun back in episode 2 when he was pretending to be Lion, like we can see here for example:

ลองไปที่นี่ดู แล้วพี่จะรู้เองงับ [long bpai tîi nîi duu • láeo pîi jà rúu eng ngáp] try–go–to–this–see • then–older sibling–will–know–self–[cutesy polite particle]

Now let’s go back to the second sentence of the song and take a look at the pronouns: ส่วนผมน่ะชอบคุณงับ [sùuan pŏm nâ chôp kun ngáp] (= “as for me, I like you”).

The singer here uses the polite first person pronoun ผม [pŏm] when he refers to himself and the polite second person pronoun คุณ [kun] when he says “you”. These are pretty formal pronouns that usually also come with a polite particle. So technically the sentence “I like you” with these formal pronouns should go ผมชอบคุณครับ [pŏm chôp kun kráp] – literally “I like you krub”. However, the singer wants to be cute, so he switches the polite particle ครับ [kráp] with the cutesy form งับ [ngáp] and sings “I like you ngáp” instead.

(On this note, some interesting tidbit: according to my Thai friend who I discussed this scene and song with, in his words, it’s mainly “lesbian tomboys” who use งับ [ngáp]. He said men might use it in writing but don’t really say it.)

Anyway, now that we know that the song lyrics make “Sharks like to ngáp you. As for me, I like you ngáp”, let’s see what they do with it in MSP.

Part 2: Tinn and Biting

The dialogue starts out with Tinn saying “Sharks, they may bite you. But I like you, no bite”. At least it does according to the English subtitles. What he really says in Thai is this:

ฉลามอะ ชอบงับคุณ ส่วนผมอะ ชอบคุณงับ [chà-lăam à • chôp ngáp kun • sùuan pŏm à • chôp kun ngáp] shark(s)–[particle] • like–bite–you {formal} • as for–I {formal}–[particle] • like–you {formal}–[cutesy polite particle]

Here is the line from the song in comparison:

ฉลามน่ะชอบงับคุณ ส่วนผมน่ะชอบคุณงับ [chà-lăam nâ chôp ngáp kun • sùuan pŏm nâ chôp kun ngáp] shark(s)–[particle]–like–bite–you {formal} • as for–I {formal}–[particle]–like–you {formal}–[cutesy polite particle]

As we can see, Tinn is pretty much directly quoting that line of song to Gun. So a more literal translation of what he’s saying here would be something along the lines of “Sharks like biting you. As for me, I like you”. Or rather, if we remember the word play with the word งับ [ngáp] = to bite and งับ [ngáp] = cute form of ครับ [kráp], what he’s saying is actually “Sharks like to ngáp you. As for me, I like you ngáp”.

This makes Gun laugh and he says “Are you flirting or what? Here. Let me tell you something. If you want to hit on someone, use your own line.”

Now that we know Tinn quoted a line of a song we also understand that Gun recognizes it as such and that when he says “use your own line” it’s actually him calling Tinn out for quoting a song instead of coming up with his own original pick-up line.

Gun then turns away and repeats the first part of the song lyrics to himself, still very amused: ฉลามชอบงับคุณ [chà-lăam chôp ngáp kun] (= “sharks like biting you”).

Tinn was just scolded for not being original in his flirting and what does he do? He “bites” Gun and then, according to the subtitles, says: “Sharks, they like to bite. I do too, but only the one I like.”

Now let’s once again look at what’s happening in Thai. What Tinn is saying here is this:

ฉลามอะ ชอบงับคุณ ส่วนผมอะ งับคนที่ชอบ [chà-lăam à • chôp ngáp kun • sùuan pŏm à • ngáp kon tîi chôp]

Let’s bring up the song lyrics again:

ฉลามน่ะชอบงับคุณ ส่วนผมน่ะชอบคุณงับ [chà-lăam nâ chôp ngáp kun • sùuan pŏm nâ chôp kun ngáp]

We can immediately see that Tinn is once again directly quoting almost the entire line of the lyrics to Gun. He repeats the whole “Sharks like biting you. As for me…” part, but then he unexpectedly changes the last part. This time around he doesn’t end the sentence with “I like you ngáp” (ชอบคุณงับ [chôp kun ngáp]) like the song does, instead he ends it with:

งับคนที่ชอบ [ngáp kon tîi chôp] bite–person/people–that–like

Since Thai doesn’t have plural forms, this can be translated as “I bite the person that I like” or “I bite the people I like”. So what’s happening here is that after being scolded for being unoriginal, Tinn then quotes the song again but decides to prove that he can indeed think of a line on his own by changing the second sentence from “as for me, I like you” to “as for me, I bite the person/people I like”.

What’s kinda interesting to me here is that the second sentence from the song talks about คุณ [kun] (= “you”) and Tinn in his own continuation talks about คน [kon] (= person/people). I find it interesting, because these two words sound very similar. In fact, when I tried to transcribe the Thai lines I actually wasn’t sure whether Tinn was saying คุณ [kun] or คน [kon] here. It sounded like งับคน [ngáp kon] (= bite person) to me, but I was a little unsure since the song itself talks about งับคุณ [ngáp kun] (= bite you). I played it to my Thai friend and he too had to listen to it a couple of times before deciding that it must be คน [kon] as that would make more sense.

Alright, moving on. So Tinn has just quoted the song again but with a changed ending: “Sharks like to bite you. As for me, I bite the person/people I like.” Gun doesn’t know how to response to this, so after a moment of consideration he comes up with a witty comeback: “Bite, my ass!”

(Fun fact: the expression he uses here that was translated as “my ass” in English is พ่อมึง [pâaw mueng] which literally translates to “your father”. If you’re a German speaker: it means Gun is essentially saying „Deine Mutter!!“ in response lmao. Brilliant comeback, really. Extremely witty. Good job, kiddo.)

Unfortunately for Gun, Tinn’s whole flirting tactic, as silly as it was, has in fact worked on him and he can’t help but laugh again in an “I can’t believe this is the man I have chosen to love” kind of way.

Now it’s Tinn’s turn to call Gun out for it: “Look at you now. I bet you like the one that bites you.” That’s how the subtitles put it. But one last time I wanna take a look at the original Thai lines.

Tinn says two sentences here and the second sentence is more relevant for the whole song reference/word play thing, but since you’ve made it all the way here I assume you like languages and would be interested in knowing the literal meaning of Tinn’s words where the subtitles go “Look at you now”, so I’ll just tell you that too while I’m at it.

So all in all Tinn says:

อาการแบบนี้อะ สงสัยชอบคนที่งับ [aa-gaan bàep níi à • sŏng-săi chôp kon tîi ngáp]

That first sentence (อาการแบบนี้อะ [aa-gaan bàep níi à]) is a little difficult to translate for me because I don’t really know what to do with the first word, but the แบบนี้ [bàep níi] part means “like this”. The first word is อาการ [aa-gaan] which can mean “symptom” or “condition”. According to thai2english.com other meanings also include “expression” or “manner”. All in all, what Tinn is essentially doing here is pointing out Gun’s reaction, so I think to make it sound more natural and not too weird in English we could maybe say something along the lines of “A reaction like this...” for this line.

As for the other thing Tinn says, it’s this:

สงสัยชอบคนที่งับ [sŏng-săi chôp kon tîi ngáp] suspect–like–person(s)–that–bite

As I said earlier, Thai doesn’t do plural forms. Nor does it do articles. And yet another thing that Thai often doesn’t do is pronouns, meaning pronouns are often left out of the sentence entirely. Such is the case here, so this sentence could mean one of the following:

I suspect you like a person that bites.

I suspect you like the person that bites.

I suspect you like the person that bites you.

I suspect you like people that bite.

I suspect you like people that bite you.

Now what’s fun about this line is once again the word play and the reference to Tinn’s line from earlier when he said “I bite the person/people I like”. Let’s do some more comparison.

So this is what Tinn says to Gun right after he steals the snack by “biting” Gun:

ส่วนผมอะ งับคนที่ชอบ [sùuan pŏm à • ngáp kon tîi chôp] as for–I {formal}–[particle] • bite–person(s)–that–like

And this is what he’s saying to Gun now:

สงสัยชอบคนที่งับ [sŏng-săi chôp kon tîi ngáp] suspect–like–person(s)–that–bite

The reason why this is fun is that Tinn switches the words งับ [ngáp] and ชอบ [chôp]. Where first he said งับคนที่ชอบ [ngáp kon tîi chôp] (lit. “bite–person(s)–that–like” = “[I] bite [the] person/people that [I] like”) he now says ชอบคนที่งับ [chôp kon tîi ngáp] (lit. “like–person(s)–that–bite” = “[You] like [the] person/people that bite [you]”).

Let’s look at it again side by side to really see how delightful that is:

งับคนที่ชอบ [ngáp kon tîi chôp] bite–person(s)–that–like

ชอบคนที่งับ [chôp kon tîi ngáp] like–person(s)–that–bite

What’s more, Tinn switching around the words is reminiscent of, if not a deliberate callback to the word switch from the original song lyrics that started it all:

ชอบงับคุณ [chôp ngáp kun] like–bite–you {formal}

ชอบคุณงับ [chôp kun ngáp] like–you {formal}–[cutesy polite particle]

Part 3: Summary

Since this was an overwhelming amount of information in one go I’ve put all the dialogue into a table so you can look at it again side by side:

As you can see, I’ve also included the official English subtitles for those who are curious. However, I wanna stress that this isn’t to imply “the eng subs suck and I did it better!!!1!11”. I’ve put my own “literal” translation into the table mainly because the word-for-word translation of the Thai lines can be pretty confusing and I wanted to put it into a more natural sounding English so that it would make more sense.

You’ll also notice that I’ve put some of the pronouns into square brackets. That is to signify that the Thai sentence doesn’t include any pronouns there, which is relevant mainly for Tinn’s very last line as the English sentence could work either with or without the second “you”.

As for the curly brackets in the Thai column, those indicate the level of formality or the connotation of a word, especially of the pronouns.

The red text marks every time when the song lyrics are being quoted.

In Conclusion

All in all, what is happening in this scene is that Tinn quotes a line of a silly little song that includes a silly little pun and then when Gun scolds him for being unoriginal Tinn goes and takes that silly little word play even further, turning it into his own thing. And the most delightful part about it is that it absolutely works on Gun, as much as he may hate to admit it.
