Hey lily, how're you doing with the current "Texas situation"? Because that shit is so fuckin dumb
Greg Abbot is a piece of shit Governor. Literally so many things are going wrong in Texas that I didn't even know what you were referring to. I looked up the news and currently its about the Texas-Mexican Border Dispute. [News Article]
"The fight between Texas and the federal government over the control of the US-Mexico border has further intensified after state governor Greg Abbott announced he will defy the Biden administration and US supreme court by ordering the installation of even more razor wire to deter migration." - Erum Salam, 26 Jan. 2024
Due to this, the Texas authorities actively allowed a woman and her two children to drown in the Rio Grande this month with witnesses. It is disciple to hear such disgusting acts in my state and they are not the only deaths. Many have died from being caught in the barbed wire or shot. Horrific things like this are not uncommon to hear about in these border areas. I do not want to scare people with this information, but I think it is important to understand.
RAICES is a good Texas-based nonprofit to donate for as they provide many free and low-cost services to immigrant children, families, and refugees.

A woman with two children gets pregnant. She wants another child. Unfortunately, during pre-natal checks, it's discovered that this pregnancy has Trisomy 18, a rare condition which is nearly always fatal. Even in the rare cases where it is not fatal, it can cause severe pregnancy complications and the child that results will require full time care for however long they live.
This woman decided, in consultation with her doctors, that she would prefer not to go through a pregnancy whose overwhelmingly likely result is simply a dead fetus or infant and even whose ideal outcome would result in a substantially reduced ability to parent her other children. Moreover, she still wants another child and does not wish to risk the possible damage to her body and fertility that may come as a result. For this reason she chose to abort the pregnancy.
I think most of us, even a large number of those who consider themselves pro-life, can accept this result. It's not the ideal circumstance any of us would prefer, but the decision is reasonable given the situation.
Unfortunately, this woman lives in Texas and Texas has taken a hard line on its abortion ban, arguing that abortion can only be performed in case of immediate threat to the life of the mother. This position has been taken both by the Attorney General and the Supreme Court of the state, meaning that this is the way the law will be enforced.
Many people who celebrated the end of Roe v. Wade tried to say that this type of situation would never come to pass, that their abortion bans would always be enacted and enforced with an eye toward mercy and care for women. It's been about a year and a half since Dobbs and it's become increasingly clear that this is not the case.
Perhaps there are legal guardrails that should be put around the procedure of abortion, I'm certainly open to the possibility and discussion. But what I think is clear at this point is that the type of people who push for blanket bans on the procedure cannot be trusted to enforce them in any way that is consistent with how the majority of Americans view compassion, mercy, and care for women and families, not to mention medical science. Anyone who continues to argue otherwise is lying to try to get you to enact their extreme agenda.

Texas Antisemitism Executive Order
PLEASE SHARE THIS AROUND!!
As many of y'all know by now, I am a Texan. Specifically a Texan in higher education, at a public university. Gov. Abbott's new executive order to have public universities crack down on Anti-Semitic speech directly impacts the students advocating for Palestine.
Phrases such as "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free" can now be considered HATE SPEECH!
“Some radical organizations on our campuses engaged in acts that have no place in Texas,” Abbott said in a press release. “Now, we must work to ensure that our college campuses are safe spaces for members of the Jewish community.”
This was never about protecting Jewish people, but protecting Zionists. The order was issued after universities across Texas had issues after Oct. 7th's events. Pro-Palestine and Pro-Israel students were butting heads, and some broke out into fights according to some sources. As a uni student myself, I have seen these conflicting sides in person. Abbott's statement also makes no mention of the Anti-Islamic rhetoric that has also been spreading due to Israel's persecution of Palestinians.
This order calls for all public universities and colleges review their free speech policies, and to lay out in their policies the definition of antisemitism, and punishments for Anti-Semitic rhetoric. All within 90 days of the order's publishment.
Most of this appears to be banking on HB 3257, the bill that introduced Texas' Holocaust, Genocide, And Antisemitism Advisory Commission
Now, there has been some actual pushback on this, from the The Texas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Texas) as well as students and administration from the universities and colleges effected.
“This order not only undermines the principles of free speech and academic freedom but also perpetuates a harmful narrative that equates criticism of Israeli policies with antisemitism,” CAIR-DFW Executive Director Mustafa Carroll said in a statement.
Taken from the Dallas Morning News article posted earlier in this post.
The wordage used by Abbott worries many people, due to the fact that it is so vague. To the point where criticizing Israel and it's government can be considered hate speech.
Please share this around. If it is happening here, it can happen to any state.
Don't stop speaking about Palestine. Don't stop supporting the Palestinian citizens who are displaced right now. Educate your peers, donate if you are able, and don't give up hope.

Some good news from a few hours ago! In surprise move days after Allen mall shooting, Texas House panel OKs bill raising age to buy semi-automatic rifles. The bill still has a way to go before getting passed, it is now moving up to the Calendars committee.
Tumblr media
I do want to hype this bill up because the ripple effect it could have on the gun control laws in other states if it is codified would be absolutely massive.

"Rule of Law" by Texas Observer Political Cartoonist Ben Sargent
Part of our coverage of the impeachment of Ken Paxton. To see more political cartoons from Ben Sargent, visit our Loon Star State section, or find Observer political reporting here.
Read more from the Observer:
Paxton, Acquitted: Politics Reporter Justin Miller outlines the prosecution’s many missed opportunities, a big campaign donation to a key Ken Paxton supporter, and more which may have led to the Attorney General getting acquitted on all 16 articles of impeachment against him. And how, even with all that, Paxton still isn’t out of hot water yet.
Angela Paxton’s Ties to a Shell Company: Justin Miller gets to the bottom of why K-Pax and his wife stopped over in Kosovo to promote a lobbyist-friend’s shadowy tech business.
Paxton is Burning: Correspondent Nancy Goldstein explains why the Texas Republican party turned, at least temporarily, against Ken Paxton after years of open corruption and abuse of power and the law.

CW Abortion rights and Texas politics.
youtube
Hey guys, I don’t like getting political on here and discussing topics that may upset certain people, I like getting along with everyone on here, and staying away from this stuff, but…. I don’t know what to think about this, ever since I discovered who I was as an individual, my beliefs shifted over the years due to an abusive parent shoving there beliefs and opinions on me at a young age, now that I’m older and have discovered my voice and identity, my view on Christianity has changed, my perspective on things has been warped due to all the hate I’ve seen in the religion and the kind of people within this religion, my mother is Christian and she respects who I am and because of her I still believe there’s an afterlife and some form of god, but…. I just don’t know or understand this video fully I’m conflicted, on one hand I’m afraid of how many people in this video and the comment section are saying abortion is a sin and you’ll go to hell, I’m a young trans man who hasn’t undergone any surgery or medical stuff yet I’m still in a woman’s body and I’m fearful of what will happen, I’ve always been fearful of all the politicians slowly taking away our human rights or choice…..this was all in Texas 13 days ago….y’all should I be scared of this? I just don’t know how to feel about this.

I don't know if I'm more concerned with whether or not everyone suddenly quoting Andrew Jackson knows that what Andrew Jackson did after this statement was THE TRAIL OF TEARS and went down as the American Tyrant and they're celebrating this and encouraging our rapid decent towards fascism or if they don't know that what he did and they're idiots.
I'm not sure which is worse. But I would like to not be located here when the governor decides to IDK secede from the union. ALSO PEOPLE HAVE ALREADY DIED because of this political stunt the governor is pulling at the border!! DIED!!! wtf.
