✩🩸🗡Review:
Elise Kova’s latest book in the Married to Magic series is fang-tastic!
“A Duel with the Vampire Lord” centers around Floriane, a forge maiden who is kidnapped by her worst enemy—the vampire lord Ruvan. In order to survive, she becomes his blood sworn. But the longer Floriane stays at Castle Tempost, the more she realizes that the vampires are not the monsters she thought they were.
Floriane is a strong female protagonist and compelling character. She finds great joy working beside her mother as a blacksmith. As someone who is not familiar with this line of work, I loved learning about how metal is forged into weapons and how much strain the body goes through during this process. To accurately portray smithing, Kova worked with an iron artist to make her own dagger, which makes this book extra special!
Due to the long hours Floriane spends in the smithy, she has an “untraditional” figure—one that is curvy and stout. The way she is described made me love her all the more because Floriane provides representation of women of different body types to readers.
Though she is self-conscious about her appearance at the beginning of the novel, comparing herself to other women in the town, those feelings go away the moment she realizes that Ruvan burns for her. Of the three books in the series, “A Duel with the Vampire Lord” has the best relationship development. Ruvan and Floriane naturally start off as enemies, but they are forced to put their differences aside in order to break the curse plaguing Ruvan’s people. Their attraction for each other heightens the more time they spend with each other until it reaches a fever pitch (arguably Kova’s spiciest scene to date). I absolutely love Ruvan and Floriane’s chemistry and the sacrifices that they made each other towards the end of the novel truly made me feel things.
Another aspect of the novel I appreciated is how Kova was able to create something new about vampires. In her world, blood is used to enhance magic rather than quench thirst. Their blood based magic system is both complex and unique, informing the reader of the vampire’s customs and abilities.
In past books, a majority of the time is spent in Midscape (Kova’s magical land). Kova switches it up in this novel, dividing the protagonist’s time between Midscape and Hunter’s Hamlet, Floriane’s home in the Natural World. I enjoyed getting the opportunity to learn about the social structure of Hunter’s Hamlet (complete with a Master Hunter, Hunters, a Forge Maiden, and farmers) while still being able to venture into the Vampir mountains.
I cannot wait to continue on in the Married to Magic series with “A Duet with the Siren Duke” next year! Fingers crossed that Ruvan and Floriane make a cameo!

I’ve never read the Temeraire books (not 100% sure they’re my bag) but seeing your posts about them as you read your way through the series has been delightful. I love seeing it, and I love how much you’re clearly enjoying yourself. Makes my day
I am having the time of my life tbh! I do try to tag my temposting so people can filter it out (I know the vast majority of my tumblr followers is here for a very different fandom) but tbh I delight in thinking that people who have never read these books will try to get an idea about what's going on in them based on my shitposts. what DOESN'T happen in this series

name: TempOSt
race: Warforged
class: Sorcerer (Storm)
characterisation: While designed to be the ultimate weapon to turn the tide of a war, their creation was plagued with problems from its start. From miscommunications, to attacks on the base, to straight-up sabotage - it was increasingly clear the weapon wouldn't be finished in time, and so the project was abandoned, and soon after the base was destroyed as the war raged on. Many years passed, the war ended, adventurers returned to their natural habitat, and some happened to come across the ruined base one day. Through some fate - or luck - the party happened to activate the weapon, which... awoke? They were awake? But what was their purpose? To the party's initial alarm, the weapon looked to them as their creator; in order that they not become a menace they were taken in, but over time the party and the weapon gained affection for each other. It was not to last. A raider ambush attacked the party, intending to steal and sell the weapon for scrap. As the fight raged on, in a mode of panic, the weapon charged up, and brought a storm down upon the raiders... clipping themselves and some of the party, too. While the surviving raiders fled, the weapon patched up the wounds of their friends, wrote a clumsy 'SORRY', and struck out on their own, looking for a reason for their existence...
-
inspiration: The Defect (Slay the Spire) been playing a lot of this lately, though heavily modded. ironically Defect is my worst vanilla character but also my favourite design... anyway. warforged is a clear choice; storm sorcerer too, because in my experience vanilla Defect tends to go for elec orbs (especially since starting with one), and storm sorc can still utilise some things that'd work well for frost/dark orbs, such as mage armor or shadow blade. and, well - chromatic orb exists. honestly even with all the new orbs mods add I generally go for either elec or builds that just get me random orbs...

Eesti Pank: Prognoos.

If you were wondering, Temuera Morrison is Ngāti Maniapoto iwi, so he’s from the North Island, up around Rotorua. I’m mentioning that for your edification, but also because I had to look that up, since most NZ news sources tend to just refer to him as Māori.  That is a thing actually, that I had to look that up. And you could argue that it’s a Me issue, but I actually had to go through several sources to find it! I ended up looking at iwi around his place of birth, and then finally I found that he was listed on the wiki page for one of those iwi. Ok. An issue. While it arguably makes sense in foreign news media to just say Māori, for sources in Aotearoa/NZ it actually reads as kind of insulting. Iwi are like tribes or nations, they’ve got different practices, history, etc etc. Just saying that someone is “Māori” instead of specifying their iwi in a NZ context* is very much a handwaving, colonial, “they’re all the same” kind of gesture (unless of course the source had a legit reason, like that the person themselves was cut off and didn’t know, which is definitely something that happens to colonized populations in colonial states. But there are a lot of people who know their iwi/s and those should be noted).  Anyway. Exempting those good reasons, none of which apply in Tem’s case, it’s the kind of gesture that speaks to the bias of popular news media. And okay, yeah, duh, a colonial nation has a colonial popular news media, it shocks nobody at all. But actually, notably, some of the bigger national news aggregates have made blanket, not even specifically prompted apologies about this kind of thing in the past couple of years, followed by direct and open pledges to be better in these specific ways. Which means that if you see a bit of media from a NZ source, they actually do know that they shouldn’t be doing that. You actually can reasonably ask them directly - what’s their iwi? How come you just put Māori instead of specifying? I guess maybe they think they don’t have to do this with Tem because he’s been such a national icon since I was literally a child and maybe they feel he’s grandfathered in to the old way of doing it. But still, it’s worth bringing up so I’m gonna check a few articles on stuff.co.nz. and see what, as we say in the antipodes, the haps are.
Found out that Dame Kiri Te Kanawa is Ngāti Maniapoto too!  (Side note: I don’t know Tem’s hapu or marae but his uncle, Sir Howard Morrison, had his tangi at Te Papaiouru, so maybe his marae is there? I feel like the information is out there in Te Reo sources so I’ll have to go looking).  *I know it’s popular these days to blanketly use Aotearoa whenever you talk about NZ, but I’m personally really not into using ‘Aotearoa’ to refer to the specific operations of the colonial state of New Zealand. So I don’t. I’ll refer to either where appropriate, or else I’ll use the / to indicate that... well, it’s two concepts on the same land.

Here is the Tama-te-Kapua wharenui (big house/meeting house) in Ōhinemutu, Rotorua. Here’s a little bit about him, for context.
Tumblr media
Up the top is some detail, which shows him with an oar, since he was the captain of Te Arawa waka.
Tumblr media
Here is some detail from inside the marae, which shows him holding stilts. Story goes that he used the stilts to nick breadfruit back in Hawaiki.
