What song are you fixated on at the moment? What lyric or verse, and why?

At the moment it’s Vienna by Billy Joel, ‘she’s always a woman’ is one of my favourites ever and Vienna just hits right as I feel like I’m behind a lot of the friends that I grew up with atm. (My fave parts are ‘you’re so ahead of yourself that you’ve forgot what you need’ and ‘ you can’t be everything you wanna be before your time’.

What is your Enneagram type?

I don’t know my enneagram sorry but I know my personality type is ENFP if that’s any help :)

Tell me about your childhood imaginary friend.

Funnily enough he was a dog, like I used to just imagine I had a dog and he’d follow me around, sometimes he’d talk and sometimes he wouldn’t and he was named after ‘Balto’ from the animated movie.

What is your go to way to fall asleep?

I don’t really have one, I usually end up waking up not remembering falling asleep in the first place. I basically just wait until I’m tired enough for it just happen.

If you had to change your name, what would it be, and why? (In tandem, if you have changed your name, why did you pick that one?)

Although I wouldn’t like to change my first name, as I think it suits me, I did change my last name to my Grandma’s maiden name after she’d told me she was sad that she couldn’t keep it when she married my grandad.

What Redacted boy holds no appeal to you, and why? Like, not the one you hate but the one who you don’t get the hype for. (I won’t judge, I promise.)

I feel awful about this one, but Guy. I don’t dislike him or anything but I’m also not necessarily excited when he gets an upload. I’m also not sure why, he just doesn’t hit the same for me as he seems to do for a lot of other people.

Tell me about that one book/movie/tv show you know all the words to.

Fantastic Mr Fox. I love it, I love the framing and the colours and the characters. They’re all very ‘human’ in different ways and the moment between Foxy and Felicity near the waterfall is so relatable I want to eat it.

Which Redacted boy are you platonically attracted to? Like- forget dating, which dude do you want to be your best friend?

SO MANY. Like the entire D.A.M.N squad. I love all the characters and I don’t mind anger but if Damien directed it at me I’d get defensive and that wouldn’t make for a good couple. Gavin, I wouldn’t really like my partner flirting with other people, Huxley I enjoy hiking but simply can’t picture myself dating him because he’s with Damien etc etc

Do you have a go-to thing you ramble about when you’re tired, and if so, what is it? (For example, my boyfriend knows I’m ready to sleep when I start talking about space.)

The signal for me being tired is actually that I go very quiet/ not talkative. But if I was to ramble about something it would probably just be about things that had happened irl, old funny story’s and stuff (or whatever fandoms I’m in at the time depending on who I’m with).

As always, I love it when I am given so much information to work with! You seem so lovely and agreeable, it’s hard to think with whom you wouldn’t work well. Somehow, the “loving animals” bit convinced me, because what’s better for an animal lover than our beloved beta boy who can turn into a wolf on a whim?

Asher strikes me as the type of guy who works best with someone like himself. He works well with everyone, by his nature, but you and he would have so many similarities that being together would be wonderfully easy. It’s the big things like your extroverted natures and your compatible love languages. Yet it’s also the little things like your shared love of hiking and caffeinated battery acid (I say affectionately as a Strawberry Apricot Red Bull fiend).

You’d be the sort of couple who operate like well-oiled cogs of a machine, like one of you was a telepath, that’s how naturally you communicate and maneuver around each other. It’s a wonderfully comfortable, joyful life that the two of you have. There’s lots of alternating days of him showing you Halo and you showing him new, interesting movies, countless lectures from David about y’all having to drink something not poisoned with taurine, and so, so much love.

I’ve just got to give the boy a FOB song, you must understand; I also think it’s a really fun choice for y’all. I love the movie references, the fun, boppy tempo, the dramatic, theatrical way Asher would fall to his knees on the kitchen floor as he belts it out at you in true, emo kid fashion. It’s infectious, and you would be helpless to either sing or headbang along.

Runner-ups:

This was hard. Again, I feel like you could pair well with just so many people; narrowing it down to two was an ordeal. In the end, I like Anton for you because you two contrast in a lot of the ways you and Asher compare. Also, I chose Sam as a runner-up for you because you two hiking together would be really cute. Also, You/Sam is giving kind of David/Asher but in another font, and I love Dasher /lh

MINI CHARACTER PLAYLIST

Share at least five songs that remind you of your muse, or that you associate with your muse's character arc. Including lyrics is optional.

1. alien blues - vundabar

"I only talk to dogs because they don't understand me my teeth are yellow, hello, world would you like me a little better if they were white like yours?"

Relating to Talon's difficulties with life and their social standing, especially when they were brought up from the slums to rubbing elbows with the aristocratic life of Noxus. Even now their life is an isolated one, with convoluted rituals and daily tasks to keep themself preoccupied, busy, and not needing human connection, so the assassin tells themself.

2. family happiness - the mountain goats

"Look at the person I've turned into Tell me how do you like him now? No standards of any kind to break, no creeds to disavow."

Initially this one was added to the playlist for the bitterness and held for the other passenger in the car, relating it as Talon's complex feelings for Marcus and everything he's done to them. Molding them into a weapon but doing very little to help them be a person. But now with the comic out, and reading more interview questions relating to the song, it aligns far more to Talon and Katarina's relationship, with Marcus' ghost still deciding both of their actions, and how this has lead to Talon's difficult relation with Kat.

One of the comments John Darnielle (the artist behind tmg) had for the song included this bit; This song, this song is about people who have chosen whatever the opposite of victory is. Talon is someone who's chosen the opposite of victory.

3. my town - frank carter & the rattlesnakes

Talon's difficult relation with Noxus Prime, and Noxus in general. It's the heart of the empire, and just as power hungry as it's history. When Talon grew up under Darkwill's rule, Noxus promised the best of life for the strongest, and that meant proving yourself in every way possible, and climbing over anyone to do it. Watching a demonic monster take the leading role for himself hasn't helped Talon's view of Noxus as a system, but there is a least now understanding that many are just like them; born into this. Although that understanding is without sympathy. Talon hates Noxus, and the rest of the world hates Noxus, and hates them.

4. get out the way - mother mother

"there's spit on my face the hot breath of the human race and I know, I know I'm suppose to integrate but hows about instead I inch away?"

Talon has a habit of keeping people at arms length at best, and becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy by not trusting anyone, and not being trusted in return. Even if they wanted a normal life, they can't bring themself to build the foundations of a normal one without making it an awful, painstaking event. It's just easier if people get out of their way.

5. fleabag - yungblud

"I wanna turn back time I wanna fix the way I was designed Crawl behind my eyes And kill my stale state of mind."

No matter what they do, Talon can never do the right thing. Looking out for themself, following the orders of their teacher, it all leads to death, betrayal, and blood spilt because of them. Talon was a useful weapon to Marcus, until they failed him. Betraying Katarina's trust further proves relations with them are no good. But the most damning part is the lack of trying to improve this, instead letting this fester into part of their character instead of an issue to work at. Even in the hypothetical situation of getting to change their life around, Talon wouldn't know where to begin. They feel like it's easier to stay as an unlovable fleabag because it's all they've ever known.

Every Christmas Carol I Can Think Of, Ranked By A Soprano Who Considers Christmas Carols To Be A Competition

The Holly And The Ivy. I just. Never really vibed with this one for some reason. Not sure why. Also, why put the ivy in the title if you’re never gonna mention it even once outside the title drop? I get that holly is the Christmas plant so that’s probably why but ivy’s probably been feeling like holly’s overshadowed younger sister for decades.

I Saw Three Ships. Can’t compare to the others. Also, boats don’t feel very Christmas to me. Maybe it’s the implication that the weather’s warm enough that there's no ice nearby, doesn’t really feel very winter.

Felis Navidad. Too repetitive.

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. Again, can't compare to the other stuff here. But points for being the only carol I know that directly namedrops Satan.

In The Bleak Midwinter. Second verse has the lines “heaven and earth shall flee away when He comes to reign” which is lowkey hardcore and should totally be repurposed for a video game or a book, I don’t care if that’s probably illegal somewhere. The rest of the carol isn’t really my thing, probably because of just how much the first verse reminds you of the dark and freezing and miserable parts of winter and I hate cold weather.

Joy To The World. I have a bit of a vendetta against this one because my mom would always overplay it at the expense of other carols I liked better, but that’s not its fault, and it tries, and it’s not bad for near the start of a session when you’re preparing to get into the real competition.

Carol Of The Drum/Little Drummer Boy. It’s hard not to crack up mid-song when you imagine him doing some intense drumming in the style of a teenage movie character trying to drown someone out and everyone else stares at him while baby Jesus is clearly enjoying it.

Sleigh Ride. More of a song to jam out to than one to sing in the game of carols, but points for its ability to make you able to actually see the fluffy white blankets and the snowflakes in the air and the snow on the trees.

O Christmas Tree. THE go-to song for when you’re decorating your tree. Has so many versions out there that it’s almost impossible to win this one in the verse department and it’s better for everyone involved to just pick one or two verses to sing, except there’s no verse that everyone in the room knows, making it impractical, but practicality is way overrated, especially when you’ve just put the star/angel/snowflake/PreCure action figure on top of the tree and then you stand back and get so captivated by the tree lights that you forget that anything else in the universe exists.

The 12 Days Of Christmas. Great song, AMAZING meme potential that comes of substituting Christmas with something else and doing a bunch of stuff relating to it, and will lead to a debate every year over whether the ladies dancing and lords a-leaping or the pipers piping and drummers drumming comes first. Also, props to that pop-up book with the lyrics I had as a kid. Never gave that away. One last thing about this song, I did the math and this guy has 23 birds.

Silent Night. When you’re not competing against other people, your game is against the carol itself, as you start on a high note knowing full well what you’re getting yourself into and it gives you higher and higher notes to do and you try not to get forced to drop an octave, and Silent Night has defeated me more often than any other carol combined. Mad respect. Also, it’s great for singing out the window right before bed on Christmas Eve.

We Wish You A Merry Christmas. The entire thing is just a thinly veiled demand for figgy pudding and they never tell you what exactly the good tidings are. Also, Aikatsu Stars did a remix of it where they added in a rap verse about partying and I feel like everyone needs to know this.

Good King Wenceslas. Great message, and great for putting aside the feminine urge to one-up everyone else at the carol singing session for a while and singing a duet with one person as the king and another as the page. Also, I often imagine Wenceslas looking like a wizard, star patterned robes and everything, and I do not know what to blame for this.

Ding Dong Merrily On High. This one was my favourite carol in elementary school but lost that position years ago. Still, I have to give it some respect. That refrain just hits different. Side note, what does hosanna mean anyways?

Infant Holy Infant Lowly. Banger. Feels like it could use more verses.

While Shepherds Watched. I love this one, but I’m gonna dock points for unoriginality, as it basically copy-pasted its lyrics from a Bible verse and made a few slight alterations. This gave people who have actually read it a major advantage in the verses department until A Charlie Brown Christmas came along. Admittedly, I already knew all the verses before I saw the special and went “hey, this sounds just like the song” but I’m not everyone.

Away In A Manger. Does anyone know why there are two different versions with all the same lyrics but a completely different melody? Anyways the version that starts on the lower note and goes up is by FAR the superior version and if you disagree I will run you over with my sled.

Jingle Bells. Oh man it was hard deciding between this and Away In A Manger but in the end this one won out because it’s just such a classic. I can practically hear the jingle bells when I sing this one. And knowing the other verses to it feels even more special because it’s such a huge one. Also, it’s “ride and sing”, NOT “laugh and sing” and I will remain on this hill for the rest of time.

Deck The Halls. I’m putting it this high solely for the “don we now our gay apparel” line. This song belongs to the gays. First verse is by FAR the best.

Hark The Herald Angels Sing. Every time everyone else in the room drops an octave for the refrain and I successfully keep at my extremely high notes I feel a swell of pride. I haven’t lost at this carol in years. Yes I shamelessly put this one so high partially because it feeds my ego. Also, I can picture the angels and they are very very bright.

Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer. Who doesn’t love a good song that tells a story? And has an entire MOVIE based around it? The reason I wasn’t at elf practice is because I was busy singing this and going “like a lightbulb!” “like a flashlight!” “like Pinocchio!” “like Monopoly!” in between lines. Rudolph will always be one of the most fun Christmas songs to do.

O Come All Ye Faithful. If you sing part of it in Latin you automatically win. Technically has 4 verses but one of them is either so weirdly translated or just so weird that everyone only sings 3. Also it’s one of the best songs for competitive high notes.

We Three Kings. Oh my god, We Three Kings. This song is the reason I know what frankincense is. It comes to mind when you see a single star in the sky in December. But none of that compares to when you hit the myrrh verse and instantly turn into Madame Macabre. Years of skipping it only made singing it loud and clear as the rest of the family slowly realizes this is going to be what it’s like every year now feel like breaking free and growing jet black wings. I now understand why the YouTube algorithm referred to stuff from Music Of The Fears as Christmas music. Though it does make one wonder how Mary felt about this.

Calypso Carol. There’s just something about the melody and the image that “star of silver sweep across the skies” paints, and when I’m singing it it’s like I can actually hear the bells and they don’t leave my head for the next couple songs. Four verses of glory and angels and magic and also the fact that it’s called Calypso Carol.

The First Noel. Was my fave for a while and for good reason. I almost always win at this one against other singers and yet at the same time it’s also one of the few carols that is stronger than my hubris, having defeated me before. It surprises me with the notes I can hit and I have every last verse memorized including the ones that aren’t in my carol book and also linear progression of events in the verses when you sing them in the right order which just hits different.

Once In Royal David’s City. I love this one so much oh my god. It’s got the high notes and SEVEN whole verses and linear story progression even better than The First Noel’s and a reference to stars which is always a really good thing to have in a carol and there's just something about how the song follows through Jesus' childhood and then has 2 verses at the end dedicated to where he is now and during the last two verses you can practically feel yourself lift off the ground and glow as the instrumentals that are not actually there but you hear them in your head do something EPIC and you feel like your very existence is under the effect of that one piano pedal. Absolute god tier Christmas carolery.

"I never thought I'd see you here,"

Taehyung wasn't sure how fast he whipped his head to the side upon hearing that voice.

He smirked.

"Well that makes the two of us."

Jimin shrugged nonchalantly since he was already expecting the devil to answer like that. He had known Taehyung for the most part of his immortal life to know that the devil never went to church.

"But I came here to see you." Taehyung spoke again. He had been looking for Jimin for quite some time now. The church was big and he hadn't been here before so he didn't know where the angel usually went, but now he finally had the chance to sit beside Jimin. It made sense. Of course the latter would be sitting at the nave as he prayed.

Jimin was like any typical believer of God. He went to church to praise his Lord.

Angels weren't that different from people. The former also had an obligation to protect troubled human souls and go to church.

"Huh." Jimin switched his gaze from the cross on the altar to Taehyung. "This is new. Why would the devil of death want to see me?"

"Seeing that I have interrupted your talk with him," Taehyung pointed at the cross. "It would be better if I go straight to the point so you could go back to kissing his ass." His finger gun was still aimed at the altar. "So yeah. Mr. Park Jimin, I want you to stop looking after Jeongguk's sister."

The devil was prepared to hear the angel's response. In fact, he already knew what to say when Jimin asked "and why should I do that?"

Jimin was certain that without his protection, Taehyung could easily kill you.

Yes, it had been months since the devil tried to end your life, but it didn't mean that Taehyung wouldn't do it again. The only reason why he hadn't laid his hands on you was because you were looking after your stubborn brother, thus rendering you too busy to think about killing yourself.

But the thing was, even if you still wanted to end your life, Taehyung's answer remained the same. He wanted Jimin to stop protecting you "because I would protect her myself,"

Normally Jimin wouldn't fall for Taehyung's claim. It was clearly a trap, but then this was the first time he looked at the devil's eyes without detecting any lies.

Jimin was certain: Taehyung was telling the truth. He definitely wanted to protect you.

"But why?" This was the thing. Jimin didn't understand why the devil still wanted to protect you now that he had found an easy way to free himself from you.

Jimin's question had been answered shortly. As said, Taehyung was prepared for this. He never went to battle without weapons.

"Because I need you to protect Jeongguk instead,"

"That's—" Jimin swallowed hard. His eyes were focused on Taehyung, still trying to detect any form of deception.

There was none.

"—an interesting turn of event." Jimin continued and then he paused again just to knit his brows together. Curiosity was written all over his pretty face. "Are you starting to like her?"

Clearly Jimin was only teasing. He knew devils weren't capable of doing that. They only looked after themselves.

"It's more than that," but for the second time, Taehyung caught Jimin by surprise.

More than that? What was this supposed to even mean?

Luckily Taehyung explained what was running inside his head.

"John eight verse thirty two."

Unluckily Jimin didn't understand what was going inside the devil's head.

"Why are you telling me the word of my Lord?"

"Did you know that I memorized what's written on the bible just to twist and use it against humans?" Taehyung answered Jimin's question with another question.

The only thing the angel could do was shake his head in disbelief. Of course the devil of death would do something like this.

"Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free," Taehyung licked his lower lip. His gaze was now directed at the cross. "That's what John eight verse thirty two all about, in case you didn't know."

"Of course I know," Jimin looked insulted.

Taehyung chuckled.

"That...verse," he chuckled again. He seemed nervous. "Was used against me."

When the devil looked at Jimin, the latter got to see something in Taehyung's eyes that he never thought he'd see.

Taehyung looked afraid.

"I happen to know the truth now." The devil's voice was barely audible.

Jimin thought that Taehyung was a freaking good actor if it turned out that he was only saying these things just to get what he wanted.

It was risky to trust the devil.

"Speak your truth, then." Jimin challenged. "Set yourself free."

Taehyung's sheepish chuckle turned into a low mocking laugh. Just like that, Jimin came to a realization that the devil would always be the devil.

"How can I set myself free when I'm being held down by my own stupid feelings?"

And there was Jimin's answer.

He couldn't believe it, but damn. It made sense.

Taehyung wanted to protect you because he had feelings for you.

"I hate..." The devil pointed at the cross again because he still didn't want to utter the word God.

"He 'gave me' something," the Lord gave him the ability not to feel anything aside from the capital vices.

"But he took it away from me—" Taehyung's eyes were red, full of hatred.

"—Just when I learned how to like it." Only wanting to reap souls was convenient. He didn't have to feel remorse or any other stupid emotions human got to feel.

What was not convenient was the change he was going through.

Taehyung realized that this was his salvation.

He told you before that your lives were connected because God wanted to punish him for collecting too many souls. Little did he know that the Lord also wanted to save him from collecting too many souls.

But that was exactly the problem.

Taehyung didn't want to be saved—just like you.

That was it.

Your life was connected to Taehyung because you were just like him. Aside from that, God wanted Taehyung to feel something he had never felt before, something that you had: the burden of guilt.

It was because guilt would eventually turn into the feeling that used to be foreign to the devil: empathy.

Guilt turned to empathy because for instance; you were guilty since you felt like Areum's death and Jeongguk's trauma were the result of your selfishness.

Taehyung knew very well that he was selfish too, and since he was conscious of this so-called selfishness, he would then understand what you were going through.

It was tricky, but God planned this well. Taehyung learned to put himself in your shoes because you two carried the same burden.

Spending many months with you evoked his ability to truly understand pain and the consequence of being self-centered.

Taehyung came to realize what he stole from the people he had tempted to choose evil. This was evident when he saw how Cha Eun Hye and Jeongguk mourned.

And so now he wanted to protect the only person that he could relate to. Taehyung's empathy towards you led him to care about you.

Care. This was the pesky feeling and reason why the devil of death didn't want you to die.

He cared for you. Nothing more, nothing less.

"So you care for her. Is that it?" Jimin finally got the gist of Taehyung's speech.

"I do, but it doesn't end there." Taehyung rolled his eyes. "Oh how I hate human emotion." It was weird since he was beginning to act like the mortals he despised the most.

You cared for your brother and the odd thing was that Taehyung didn't find it odd to care about Jeongguk too.

It just felt....right.

"Jeongguk needs your help. That little fucker is self-destructive and you, my dear angel, guide lost souls, so..."

Taehyung didn't have to elaborate more since it appeared like Jimin understood now.

You understood too.

Taehyung told you that you didn't have to worry about Jeongguk anymore because he took care of it.

The devil managed to convince Jimin to protect your brother.

"I still can't believe guardian angels exist," you shook your head in disbelief. You had forgotten about Jimin since you had been busy these past months.

Jeongguk was really expelled from the school, fortunately Kim Seokjin, the Headmaster of Bangtan University, a boarding school for delinquent students, accepted your brother.

It wasn't like you wanted Jeongguk out of your apartment. He was actually the one who came up with the idea to try his luck at the mentioned school.

You didn't feel like you had the right to stop Jeongguk because Mr. Kim told you the perks of studying at Bangtan University. You knew it would help Jeongguk.

He would be able to get the treatment he needed. There were therapists designated to help students there. Your brother would also fulfill his dream to become an artist because apparently, Bangtan University had strict standards when it came to hiring professors and training their students.

"Come on, Doctor," you remembered how the Headmaster coaxed you to allow him to look after Jeongguk. "You have to let your brother go to find yourself,"

Seokjin wasn't only the Headmaster of Bangtan University. He was also one of the school's greatest therapists.

You were positive he was trying to use his expertise to persuade you.

"I hope you're aware that you sound like a song composer," you snorted at him

'I have to let you go to find myself,' you couldn't be wrong. Seokjin's words were based on these lyrics. You had heard this song before. You just didn't know its title.

You're glad you didn't. The lyrics were awful. Why do you have to let go of someone to find yourself?

Why couldn't that certain someone help you through pain? Wasn't the reason why the two of you were together was because you wanted the relationship to grow? You wanted a companion who would be with you till the end? Didn't you want to share burden and happiness with them?

You wanted that with Jeongguk.

It might be too much to ask, especially because you hurt him bad. But...you wanted to make it up to him.

How could you do that when he wasn't by your side? When he was going to be separated from you again?

"Listen," Seokjin fixed the collar of his coat as he looked at you.

You were at his office, insisting on meeting him after the school called to inform you that Jeongguk passed the entrance exam.

"I know it sounds cliché, but clichés are clichés for a reason. It's what most people like and what's usually more effective."

You only raised your brow at his words, causing him to exhale calmly.

"I get it, okay? You haven't told me much, but you said it yourself that you feel responsible for Jeongguk. You thought you hurt him and so now you wanted to fix him,"

Seokjin wasn't lying. You actually told him that. It was because you got carried away. The thought of losing Jeongguk for the second time scared the hell out of you.

You were going to be the first one to admit that you two had an emotionally draining months together, but you couldn't recall a time when you still felt grateful despite all the stress.

Looking after Jeongguk made you realize one thing: pain and exhaustion were worth it if you were doing what you loved.

And you happened to love being with your little brother.

"But life shouldn't be like that, you know?" Kim Seokjin continued. His voice was much calmer and kinder. "Maybe you really hurt Jeongguk, but it doesn't mean that just because you are the reason why he's in pain, you are also going to be the one to take away the pain he feels."

You sucked in a deep breath, waiting for him to say more.

"Being comforted by the people who hurt you can sometimes cause harm more than good, especially if the person who broke you is broken too."

Tears filled your eyes. You still didn't understand completely, luckily Seokjin wasn't done yet.

"Jeongguk didn't deserve to get hurt and neither did you, but it's your responsibility to heal yourself just like it's your brother's obligation to get better. I'm pretty sure you have heard this cliché before, but again, you can't find who's lost if you don't know the way home,"

"Home is peaceful, Doctor. So find your home first,"

Seokjin had a way with words and so did Taehyung. The former ended up convincing you to let go of Jeongguk, while the latter convinced Jimin to protect your brother.

Jeongguk was scheduled to move out of your apartment the day after his 18th birthday.

You, Taehyung and, Jeongguk celebrated it yesterday, so it only meant one thing: it was time for your brother to go.

"I fixed everything," you said this while helping Jeongguk to put his luggage in the trunk of his new car.

You brought this for him; however, he didn't know yet. You were scared. What if he didn't want to accept this?

"Thanks, I guess?" Jeongguk crossed his arms.

He sometimes acted indifferent towards you, but at least he wasn't screaming right in front of your face anymore. The snide remarks also lessened.

"It's nice that I don't have to process shit." He snorted. "I hope you chose the single bedroom for me. I don't want to have a roommate,"

When you said you fixed everything, he thought you were talking about the things that needed to be settled regarding his transfer at Bangtan University.

"I'm not talking about that," but he was wrong and so you corrected him. "It's about your inheritance, Kook. Your share is already in your name. You can do whatever you want,"

His eyes widened when you handed him a black card. His black card. It was difficult to process this without his knowledge, but nothing was impossible if you had the right amount of money and power.

"I also hired a financial advisor to help you..." You said, carefully watching his expression.

His lips were pursed into a thin line.

"And I...bought you this car,"

You saw how his eyes turned wide; his jaw fell on the floor.

You panicked.

"I-It's a gift! I didn't use your money!"

Jeongguk knew that. You misread his expression. He was simply shocked that you spent so much to buy this Mercedes Benz GT63S.

Holy shit.

"I-I'll just give it away if...you don't like it!"

If it was possible, Jeongguk's eyes widened even more. Give it away? Were you out of your fucking mind!?

"I like it." Your brother uttered before you could say something stupid again.

"R-Really?"

He nodded.

"Oh, I’m happy..."

He wasn't able to reply after that since Taehyung interrupted.

"You ready to go?" The devil asked, furrowing his brow at you and your only family.

You and Jeongguk entered the car to show that you're ready to leave.

Minutes later, the three of you arrived at the airport. Jeongguk's flight was in two hours so you still had time to say your final goodbye before he left.

"Jeongguk," you called softly. He told you he'd be more comfortable if he went inside now.

But you couldn't let him go without telling him what you had been meaning to.

"I just realized one thing," you started.

Jeongguk didn't say anything. He was just waiting for you to continue.

So you did.

"I've done a lot of things, but..."

You paused again. You were trying to steady your breathing.

"I never said sorry to you."

His breathing hitched.

“I’m sorry…” You whispered as sincerely as you could.

Jeongguk's expression softened.

It was the only thing he had been waiting for. Now that he got it, he felt like the heavy thing on his chest had been lifted.

For the first time in forever, Jeongguk smiled at you. With bunny teeth and billions of stars in his bambi eyes.

"You grew up without your family by your side," your lips trembled. "You grew up without a mom—"

You didn't realize that you were crying until you sobbed.

Jeongguk was quick to embrace you.

"But you suffered too," he whispered, voice pained. "You grew up without dad—"

He tightened his embraced as he said "—and me..."

You cried even harder after that.

You didn't know how long you two stayed in each other's arms, just quietly sobbing.

Taehyung was the one who told you to break it off since Jeongguk's going to be late.

"Goodbye, Kookie..." You waved at him, your heart felt lighter.

But Jeongguk shook his head, his wide eyes were sparkling as he corrected you.

"No." He smiled again. "It's see you soon, noona..."

How do you come up with so many cool characters?? All of your OCs seem so vibrant and fleshed out. Do you have a specific process for developing them, or do they just kinda come to you mostly formed? I find I struggle with building a compelling OCs for D&D games & would love to hear your thoughts on character development.

(This answer got long, sorry.) This is a super nice sentiment, I’m happy you think my characters are all cool and unique!!

As far as process goes, uh, it depends on the character? I’ve spent a long time (years) rewiring my brain when it comes to what I think about when creating OCs. They don’t usually come to me fully formed - I get an idea in my head about a concept, and then over like a week or even months of fiddling I end up with a character for that concept.

A lot of the time my characters are simply people I wanted to see more of in media as a kid! Mostly, female characters I actually relate to or are as nuanced and messy as their male cast members, haha... (It was a trip when I realized in high school that I didn’t hate female characters - it was actually that none of them were written as well as the cool boys in the anime series I liked, haha! Be the change you want to see in the world, basically.)

Inspiration for characters (and stories for them to be part of) come from a lot of places. An easy piece of advice is to make an effort to intake media you like! Read new comics, watch new movies and television shows, read books, play video games, listen to music and obsessively memorize the lyrics - hell, obsessively learn everything there is to know about black holes or public domain characters (that’s what I did, lol...)!

(Note: ’New’ meaning new to YOU - you don’t need to only be partaking of media that’s created in 2021 - you can find a lot to love in media that was created before your time, or for generations before you!)

I must reiterate: intake new media that you ENJOY! You don’t have to like all the same things as everyone else, you don’t have to be invested in the same shows and podcasts as your friends. Varied interests and taste is part of what makes us all unique! Increasing your pool of inspiration will help you come up with interesting ideas, and help you find YOUR voice. Your particular interests and the niche things that speak to you will help you figure out what kind of characters and what kind of stories you like to create! But the process doesn’t end at just intaking media... When you find the stuff that brings you joy, analyze what exactly it is about that thing that speaks to you... Put it into words. Explain it to a friend. Make it tangible, analyze the feelings and why the series made you feel that way... and then take it and shove it into your own stories, lol!

Engage critically and thoughtfully with work you like, with characters you like, and it will help you have the language and thought process to recreate it in your own work!

My creative process is like an exquisite corpse of all the characters and series I’ve liked over my lifetime. I mesh them all together in a grim blender and what comes out is a shake in the vague shape as an OC, lol

BUT... it seems like you’re asking more specifically about making characters for tabletop roleplaying games like D&D? And THAT is a different process for me than making OCs for my comics or original story ideas!

I don’t usually join a tabletop game with a fully fleshed out character, actually?? I don’t spend a long time on their backstory, and I usually figure it out like halfway through the story, or through collaboration with my game master!

My TTRPG characters are usually whatever I think would be most interesting in the given game setting or set-up and... usually they exist in opposition to whatever the core concept of the game is. So, the examples I have from games I’ve played are:

In Cardians: West (World of Darkness: Hunter the Vigil): we played in a modern-day urban fantasy setting, where players were recruited into a supernatural Hunter group that was also a criminal organization that Did Crimes and Broke The Law in the name of keeping peace and protecting humanity from the supernatural creatures that go bump in the night. I played Andrew, a Lawful Good Police Detective, because I thought playing a character who would need to grow past his original ideals of ‘Right and Wrong’ in the name of the greater good would be interesting! (And it was!)

In SINNING ADVENTURE (WoD: Geist: The Sin-Eaters) we payed in a modern-day urban fantasy setting with the premise that the players all Died and were brought back to life by forming a pact with a powerful spirit (and getting cool ghost powers in the process!) I played Cassius, a character who could not cope with his death, and thus refused to use his new powers because they were evidence that he was no longer strictly human. It caused conflict in the group and world, but I thought it would be interesting! (And it was! Cassius was a Bitch.)

In Rex Machina (Dungeons and Dragons 5E), I wanted to play an Aarakocra, but was having a hard time deciding on a class or backstory... until I found out that in the ‘canon’ of D&D Aarakocra only live to be like, mid 20s???? Their lifespans are insanely short compared to other playable races!! And I thought that was stupid, so I decided to make MY Aarakocra, Izzy, a warlock that’s looking for ways to extend his own stupidly short life. His pact essentially granted that to him, giving him extra time to find a way to achieve True Immortality. His conflict challenges what’s ‘true’ living in this world, and his extended life is in direct conflict with a lot of forces in the world we play in, and while it is very stressful I think it’s really interesting to play!

In Lamplighting (Monster of the Week), my character Aicen is an assassin who made a deal with a demon and gained supernatural perks out of it... except I decided that she doesn’t WANT to be in this deal. She is actively trying to undo it because it wasn’t her deal - she inherited it from a CEO that she killed during an unrelated job. (Aicen is probably my character I’ve put the most backstory into, and that’s just because at character creation in MOTW you are given a lot of questions about who your character is and why they’re where they are!)

In Hand of Adam (WoD: HtV), the concept was that all players were going to join a post-apocalyptic supernatural-hating cult. I played Shouter, who was a self-preserving pacifist coward who also turned out to be a fae (which the cult would have killed him over). It was stressful but very fun. I love Shouter. He ran away from fights and didn’t actually kill anyone until the last episode where they fought God (whom he killed, lol).

NOW. THESE ARE ALL JUST EXAMPLES OF HOW *I* LIKE TO PLAY CHARACTERS!! For me personally, I enjoy playing a character who has built-in conflict either with the world, the story, or the other players. I’m only able to play characters like this because my friend group are all really cool and we all know that conflict is not bad - it’s fiction and we’re just roleplaying! If I didn’t trust my GMs and fellow players as much as I do, I probably wouldn’t have felt comfortable enough playing some of these concepts.

I don’t think you need to know every little thing about a tabletop character, and in fact, not knowing some things and leaving it up to the GM and story to flesh out is an easy way to help you get more invested in both your character AND the story your GM is telling! Tabletops are a collaborative storytelling experience, so if you’ve already plotted out your character’s whole story, there won’t be much participation from other players or your GM. Figure out what your character wants, and let your roleplaying and GM slowly put all the other pieces in place over the course of your campaign!

But the TL:DR about how I make tabletop OCs is that I just... try to give them a goal, an ideal, or a personality that is in direct conflict with some aspect of the game we’re playing. I don’t want the character to be undermining the whole game, because that’s really crappy to do to your GM, but I have to have something for my character to grow through or change. I like giving them built-in character arc starters, lol. I haven’t played a game where my character has gotten along with every other player character and NPC over the entire campaign since my very FIRST game, lol!

Also, if you’re having trouble, why not ask your GM what they think? Again, tabletops are collaborative! Don’t be afraid to talk ideas out with your GM for your character.

A final note about playing in specifically oneshot games (i.e. games that are not long campaigns but are meant to be played in one or two sittings). Personally, I always just retrofit an OC I already have to play in oneshots! When I make a new character for a long campaign, it usually takes me two or three sessions to find their voice and figure out how to roleplay them. If the game you’re playing is only one session, I find it easier to jump right in and get the most out of your character and the game when you’re playing a character you already know pretty well! I’ve played characters from my webcomic quite a few times, and it’s always a lot more fun for me than figuring out a new character on the fly!

SO UH, IN CONCLUSION... sorry if this is mad unhelpfu!! My personal processes are unique to me! but that's the point - no one person will have the exact answer that works for you! You have to keep trying until you figure it out for yourself! Good luck! Keep creating! <3

✨Event Announcement !!✨

Hi everyone <33

SO i told yall i was planning something new for my blog and i actually got this idea not too long ago. I’ve got a new bi-weekly event in the works: let me explain !

✨Musical Monday✨

The concept behind this is fairly simple, i’ll explain below the cut !

Every other Wednesday, I’ll post a little something to remind you that Musical Monday is in the works for the following week. You can then send in either

-an album you enjoy by any artist

-or a spotify playlist (that you created or that someone else created (with credits pls!))

and

-a book/show/movie who’s characters you want me to pair the songs with

my job is to then assign the characters from these shows/movies/books to the songs in said playlist/album.

!! (you can specify who you definitely want to see in the list if you’d like but it’s not necessary) !!

Every other Monday (meaning every fortnight), I’ll be posting the characters with the songs as well as a piece of writing underneath explaining why I thought they matched the song.

The whole point of this is to discover new music, hopefully give you my own recommendations as well, and also just to have fun and spread some love for these characters. I also genuinely adore analysing characters and digging deeper into their story arcs so this’ll be the perfect opportunity for me to share my thoughts with you and hear your own!

✨What shows/movies/books can I request?✨

you can request just about anything however I obviously haven’t watched every show or movie on the planet and I have definitely not read that many books so here are a few ideas to get you all started if you’re at all interested:

✨What type of music can I request?✨

I’m a big fan of indie rock, alt-rock, hard rock, pop, soul, 70s music, honestly you can send in just about anything, I’m always down to listen to new stuff and I’ll mostly be focusing on the lyrics anyway!

✨Can I request a show/movie/book if it’s been requested before already?✨

honestly there’s hundreds of combinations you could send in. Someone could send in a request for Derry Girls x a specific Harry Styles album, and two months later someone else could request Derry Girls x a David Bowie album, or request How I Met Your Mother x another Harry Styles album. There’s little to no chance you’ll request exactly the same thing as someone else so please don’t hesitate to send in your asks!

✨Themes?✨

it wouldn’t truly be a mischiefandi event if themes weren’t involved of course! when it comes to seasons, holidays and international days like Valentine’s, Christmas, Halloween, New Year’s Eve, Summer, Spring, Winter, Autumn, or other random prompts, I’ll tell you on the Wednesdays before Musical Monday, notifying you that it’s a special edition (along with additional guidelines if there are any).

The Progression of Failed Love - A STARSET Playlist

Y’all ever make a playlist before? That shit is so much fun. Using the music by your favorite artists and ordering them in such a way that portrays your own idea or story... I love it, and I’ve only just started doing it. It’s a very unique way to creatively express yourself. Now that I’ve hyped my audience up, it’s time to break all of your hearts by sharing my playlist of STARSET songs called “The Progression of Failed Love” which follows the story of a typical young couple who just couldn’t make it work. Yes I know, this is a dumb movie trope told a million times and blah blah blah, but this is my blog so deal with it ya fuckin’ dorks… of course I’m kidding, and in all seriousness, this was the most genuine playlist I was able to make. I have my own personal connection to it, and if you’ve had a relationship before, you’ll most likely find a way to connect to it. I enjoy it, and I hope you do as well.

The playlist’s first three songs in order are “Satellite”, “DIE FOR YOU”, and “Starlight”, and they encompass the honeymoon stage of a budding relationship. Let’s call these songs Act I of this story. “Satellite” to me really embodies the feeling one gets when they first fall for someone. The energy is high and all you can think about is what you would do for this individual, with lyrics that support this idea greatly:

“Satellite! Shine on me tonight!

I will be your gravity, I will stay and never leave…

My satellite! Are you here tonight?

Shine your light and set me free.

Take the darkness out of me.

Shine on me!”

STARSET – Satellite Lyrics

“DIE FOR YOU” is just a more intense version of “Satellite” within the context of this story, but it makes sense because this song represents when the relationship is now official. Both parties have fallen for each other, and the love is starting to run deep. The whole vibe of the song is much more intimate, with a calmer kit part (hot damn Adam Gilbert you are smart with writing your kit parts), but yet the same exact key and even a similar tempo. The songs are so similar, yet so different, and it’s really smart. Kudos to STARSET for this, and as a personal benefit, it makes the story of this playlist flow really well.

Starset - Die For You (Official Audio)

“Starlight” is a very specific moment in time, and marks the end of the honeymoon phase. The couple is stargazing, and the sky is just beautiful. I see many colors and galaxies in the night sky when listening to this song. The only thing is, they aren’t physically together. Their lives have picked up, and while they can’t be with each other at the moment, they still love each other very much, so they stargazed on a phone call. They are sad that they have to spend less time together, but they reassure each other that they love the other person very much, and that they are inseparable. This song has a very special place in my heart, as it’s just a beautiful song that makes me think a lot. I get a little heartsick listening to it, as it makes me think about memories that are dear to me, but it fits this spot perfectly in my playlist story.

Starset - Starlight (Official Lyric Video)

The honeymoon period has now concluded and we are moving into Act II of this story, where problems arise. This act starts with the song “Telepathic”, which has a frustrating feel to me. The song is from the perspective of only one of the characters, as they feel their significant other expects them to be a mind reader and won’t share emotions by just talking about them. As I’m sure a lot of people understand, this is infuriating to deal with, as it just makes people typically want to slam their head through a fuckin’ brick wall. At the same time, this character is very easily read by their significant other, as they wear their heart on their sleeve, making it seem like their lover is… well… “Telepathic”. This brings up insecurity, and arguments ensue. The lyrics support this idea well, for example:

“But you can read my mind

I feel it all the time.

Felt it all around you…

You had me under spell right from the start

I don’t have a telepathic heart.”

STARSET – Telepathic Lyrics

The arguments get worse as we progress into the song “FAULTLINE”. This song has a lot to do with pointing fingers and blaming, as now both lovers in this story are outright arguing with each other a lot, and over stupid shit too. They aren’t handling being apart from each other well and are having a hard time with communication due to insecurity and distance. The vibe of this song fits this mood, as it’s got a sparse but tense groove, and the accompanying guitar/synth parts are rough and a bit grungy. Out of all the songs in this playlist, this one takes 3nd place for the lyrics fitting well into the story, with such snippets as:

“First you gotta know, how to play the victim

Hate to tell ya so, but you repeat the symptoms like an aftershock

And I only wanna make it stop…”

And also:

“Caught me shaking at the site, oh

Caught me quaking in my mind, oh

You’re tripping over every fault of mine

You’re breaking open every single time

Like damn, that entire second snippet is the whole ass chorus. This song fits super well here.

The last song in Act II has some intense, even lustful feelings tied to it, this song being “PERFECT MACHINE”. The couple is desperate to make things work, as they still love each other very much but are really struggling. When they see each other, they engage constantly in what people called “hate-fucking” which ultimately solves nothing, and then fighting after they are done. Yes I know this was a WILD turn out of left field, but this is the story I envision with this playlist, very intense and potentially very real. The song I feel is the entire progression of one… erm… let’s call it a “session” of what was described above. It starts with the lustful feelings I mentioned before, then about one third of the way through the song, the entire feeling changes, becoming very angry and desperate. This song takes 2nd place for lyrics best fitting the story, with the lyrics changing from this:

“Show me your insides, show me your secrets

Show me what you desire… I can fake it”

To this:

“Even you know… even you know, this was all for nothing…”

STARSET - PERFECT MACHINE (Official Audio)

STARSET – PERFECT MACHINE Lyrics

Again, damn bro. I relate to this part of the story the least, as I’ve never experienced something like this, but holy shit that still cuts deep.

Finally, we reach Act III of this story, the end and the aftermath. This act opens up with “Let It Die”, which is the song that marks the inevitable end of this relationship. This song talks a lot about “breathing back life” into something and I feel that marks the end of a relationship very well. The feelings have been lost and it’s very possible that at least one party has moved on, so it needs to end. There’s not much to say about this song, except the one lyric that really made this song claim its spot on this playlist:

“But you told me, if you loved me, let it die”

Starset - Let It Die (Official Audio)

The relationship is now over, and one of the characters has left the narrative. We now enter the mind of the one who was still holding on to feelings. With this, the penultimate song to this playlist is the iconic “My Demons”. This song paints the image of inner demons attacking someone, and how they once had a significant other that would save them from these demons. The song references sickness, demons, needing help, and other color words that really paint the picture of someone mourning the death of love they once had. It is one of STARSET’s most emotionally impactful songs, and every single OG STARSET fan knows this song. This part of the story is the perfect spot for this song, and though I don’t want to copy another batch of lyrics for the purpose of finishing this story, I strongly encourage you to just listen to the song and pay attention to these lyrics. They’re very audible and very emotionally charged.

Starset - My Demons (Official Music Video)

We have finally reached the end, and the song that ends this whole story is “Ricochet”, another one of STARSET’s best songs. I know what I said about not copying another batch of lyrics to this post, but this song wins 1st place for lyrics relating to the story on this playlist, because this song is literally about reflection on a failed relationship and just wanting to see the other person:

“We were one in the same,

Running like moths to the flames,

You’d hang on every word I’d say

But now they only ricochet…

We were falling away,

You left me with a bittersweet taste,

But when I send my heart your way,

It bounces off the walls you made,

COME. ON. You CANNOT tell me this isn’t the best way to conclude this really sad story. This isn’t the only set of lyrics in the song that paints this picture well, THE WHOLE SONG DOES. Back to the story, time has passed and the remaining character still misses their ex-lover. They’ve tried really hard to rebuild some sort of relationship with them, but it just didn’t work. This song is the final stage of their mourning, and while they know very deep down that it will get better, they need this time to grieve.

My Emo Author’s Ending Note :)

I've been writing this goddamn story since May 2020.

I was bored during quarantine and I was watching Glee and Kurt Hummel came on stage during the winter showcase for NYADA and he sang "Being Alive". Immediately I was enraptured by the song. I loved the lyrics, the way it was set up with all these specific instances of a relationship, the parallels when the song's narrator changes his mind and comes around to wanting a relationship, wanting a marriage. I was obsessed with this song. I went and looked up the original Broadway versions - and was reintroduced to Raul Esparza.

I knew him from the shitshow that is Hannibal (yes I hate Hannibal lmao come talk to me about it sometime) and I did use to watch SVU back in the day. And then it clicked - I was like, okay, I am going to write this fic with these lyrics as the chapter titles because at the time it was so interesting to me.

Here's some problematic backstory if you're interested lmao that I’ll leave under the cut lol

So I used to be a libertarian and like I was into all the questionable right-wing stuff, like Dave Rubin, Jordan Peterson, Ben Shapiro... gross. And like they would always say, "Oh women shouldn't waste their 20s, they need to get married" and like that's what I wanted too because that's what I was being force-fed. And Company came out in the 1970s. Marriage was a lot different back then. So it kind of reaffirmed my narrative, that I needed to settle down and get married (mind you I am turning 21 in like three days lmao). But it also came with this character, Bobby, who is so emotionally vulnerable and riddled with anxiety, and we don't know why. So we insert ourselves onto him, or at least I did. I have awful social anxiety, and I don't have many friends never mind lovers lmao. I was in a long-term relationship with a guy and he was an absolute dick but I tried so hard to make it work with him and I would've married him because I was so desperate not to waste my twenties like I was told. But... I gained a lot of new anxieties from that relationship and related to Bobby even more.

So writing this was cathartic. I got to work out my thoughts and worries in a way that wasn't exactly connected to me. And I worked out a lot of stuff throughout this. I came to terms with being hella bisexual and that is why everyone is canonically fruity in this story lol. I came to terms with the fact that I was manipulated into doing sexual things with my ex that I was not comfortable with and that is why I dealt with the reader's anxieties when it came to sex in depth. I deal with mortality a little too because that fucking scares me lmao.

But I came to terms with the fact that it's not a woman's sole duty to get married. And I'd argue that's not even entirely the point of Company either. The point is to live, you have to allow yourself to be vulnerable and not discount the good just because it comes with some bad. And that's why the reader and Barba do not get married within the realms of this story. It's up to you to decide what happens to them but I did give them a happy ending because I'm a sap lmao. But due to the pandemic and just doing some critical thinking I am now a huge leftist... but that's a side story.

I also proved something to myself - that I can actually fucking finish something. I've written like a million fanfics and never finished them lmao but this one is the only one I did! (Except for the Hunger Games one I wrote when I was 11 that has since been deleted lol). So even though I cannot tell you how many times I wanted to hang it up I am so happy I powered through. I kind of never want to watch SVU again though lmao

But anyway... thank YOU SO MUCH to everyone who commented and reblogged and liked and read this story. That just means the fucking world to me. You have no idea. I love to write and idk I was like, fuck it, I'm going to put this out here and let people comment... and you know that's a kind of vulnerability in itself. But the response has been overwhelmingly positive and I want to thank all of you so much for that. This was not easy for me lmao especially not when all I wanted to do was throw in the towel... But I am so fucking happy I did it.

Tokushima Shinbun Interview with Yano Shougo

Interviewing Yano Shougo-san, who has starred for the first time in the topical anime “Given” and is originally from Tokushima. “I wanted to be an actor that would make people go, ‘I’m glad I entrusted the role to him’.”

Yano Shougo-san (30), who is from Tokushima and belongs to the troupe Super Eccentric Theater (SET), played a starring role for the first time as a voice actor in the anime “Given”, which aired from July to September on Fuji TV. “Given” is a heartrending story that centers itself around a romance between men from the same rock band. Having received high evaluations for his acting and singing voice, which portrayed with excellence the delicate emotions of the protagonist, Satou Mafuyu, Yano-san has told us about the feelings he put into the role and about his future goals.

——Good job on your first starring. Please tell us again about your impressions from when you were entrusted with the leading role.

Thank you very much. Playing a leading role in an anime series was my goal for 2019, so when my manager contacted me saying that I had passed the audition, I was happy to the point of shedding tears, but at the same time, I was also relieved. I could not sleep a wink the day before the recording of episode one, and at any rate, I was nervous. On the recording day, I was thinking as I headed to the studio, “It’d be great if the recording were tomorrow”, but I got over it a little by the moment that I thought, “If this anxiety would continue until tomorrow, then it’s actually better for it to be today!” and I remember relaxing straight away at it

——Yano-san, your fragile voice was a perfect fit for Mafuyu. What did you keep in mind when performing him? Were there any points that differed greatly in comparison to the roles you have been playing until now?

Mafuyu has an extremely painful past, unable to move a single step from where he was, as he bore a huge wound. Still, he has proper thoughts and feelings of his own, as well as a stubborn side, and though he has a mild and introverted personality, I figured that he was someone who had a strong core.

Other than that, when I saw him playing basketball with his friends, smiling and earnestly absorbing himself completely in music, I had the impression that he was a “high school boy that you can find anywhere”. This was something I always cherished when performing.

I have played uke roles before, but this was the first one where so many of my lines were “...” (laughs).

——What parts of Mafuyu do you think you have in common, Yano-san, and what parts are the total opposite of you?

I think we are just a little bit alike in that we are greedy about the things we like, and we are unable to concentrate on anything else when there is something that we need to do our best in order to achieve. What I feel to be the opposite is that Mafuyu gives off the impression that he is a big shot in some way, even without speaking much, while I am talkative and shy (laughs).

——You were also in charge of singing the insert song and ending theme song.

I knew ever since the audition phase just how essential Mafuyu’s song was for the series, so rather than my being happy about singing, the pressure was much more prominent. As a matter of course, the frequency of my voice training soon increased, and learned the basics and techniques of singing as much as time allowed me to. When I was first told about the composition, I thought, “This song was made for Mafuyu’s sake”. That is exactly why, rather than the technique, I reflected about why and how Mafuyu would be singing those lyrics, as well as the emotions that would be overflowing from him, and I thought I should sing it with care, without sugarcoating it.

——What did you keep in mind when singing as Mafuyu?

The song that Mafuyu sings bears his definite resolve to face his past and live in the present, thus I believed that I had to make it into something like a love confession, so to say - a song that could be sung because Mafuyu was the one doing it. For this, of course, technique was important, but I kept in mind that it would be okay even if it was rough-hewn or even if my voice faltered, as long as I sang in a way that would spit out everything Mafuyu had been shouldering.

——Although Noitamina has produced countless master piece animes, this has been their first Boys Love (BL), a series that depicts romance between males, so was there anything you were particularly conscious of when performing?

There was not. Just as I do when performing roles from other series, I performed while keeping in mind that I was going to live in the world of “Given” as Mafuyu with all my might.

——I believe there was such a huge response to “Given” due to its painful content, but did it get to your ears?

There are many fans of the original work not only in Japan but also overseas, so I became aware once again of the popularity of “Given”. That is just how high the expectations were for the anime adaptation, and I wanted people to like it even more when watching the anime, so I was truly happy when I actually did get evaluations like that on Twitter, etc.

——The airing of the anime “Given” is over, but a movie adaptation was green-lit. Please leave a message for the fans.

The story of “Given” will continue from now on too. I hope everyone can watch over what kind of sounds will come from Mafuyu’s song, Given’s (as in the band that Mafuyu and the others formed in the show) music and their romance from now onward.

——From here on out, Yano-san, I want to ask you about yourself. It seems you wanted to be an announcer at first.

I had the vague desire to move into the television business, and from yet another vague motive of wanting to become an announcer and engage with my favorite variety show, I started thinking in my third year of high school that I wanted to be an announcer.

——Why did you aim for voice actor from there?

After graduating from high school, I took a gap year in order to attend university, and during that time, I watched “Neon Genesis Evangelion” as per a friend’s recommendation, so with this as the trigger, I became interested in anime. I had almost never watched anime until then and was unfamiliar with voice actors, so I was shocked when I read in the end roll that Ogata Megumi-san was the one who played the role of Ikari Shinji, a boy, thus I became interested in them.

——Was there anything you put effort into in order to become a voice actor?

During my gap year, I watched many animes, looked up the voice actors that piqued my curiosity and imitated their acting, and performed lines from anime and manga with as much emotion as I could. I also bought a training book for becoming a voice actor and practiced enunciation while keeping it a secret from my family.

——What are the details of your joining SET?

I was was part of a the theater research association in university, but when I was in my fourth year, I once gave up the way of an actor and went job hunting. Even so, I wanted to have a job that was related to acting, so I took the recruitment test of a major production company hoping to become a manager, but during the individual interview, the person in charge told me, “Are you really all right with giving up on becoming an actor? If you want to be a voice actor, then go study theatre”.

And so, I began wanting to challenge myself one more time, so I stopped job hunting and after looking into audition magazines, I took an audition to become a research student of SET, where I could learn the essentials for musical, action and comedic theatre. I became a research student at 23, and after about a year of lessons and a graduation performance, I became an official member at the age of 24.

——Please tell us about the works and roles you did before your voice actor debut.

During my first year in becoming a troupe member, I played the role of Saburou, the protagonist of the TV anime “Nobunaga Kyousoukyoku”, as a motion actor - the kind of actor who does the gestures that are used as base for the characters’ movements.

I also participated in the troupe’s own public performance. It was a role where I had to drink coffee and say only one phrase, “It’s sweet”. It was a sentence that connected with a funny punchline, so I had been thinking all along about how I should act it out in order to induce laughter, and even during the performance, I did many attempts.

——After that, you debuted as a voice actor in the anime “Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V”.

When I was selected, I was really happy to be able to take the voice acting job that I had once given up on. I was brimming with confidence for some reason, even though I had no experience points. But when I went to the studio, I was no good at all; I would get nervous every week and had to stay overtime a lot, so I honestly hated going to the studio (laughs). Even so, thanks to the director and all the co-stars not throwing away someone like me, who did not know left and right, and instead nurturing me during the three years of “Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V”, I changed my thinking and posture in regards of acting.

——Afterward, you became capable of being entrusted with important roles, such as in “iDOLM@STER SideM” and “Tsurune —Kazemai Koukou Kyuudoubu—“, but were there any parts of them where you could feel your own growth?

In that I started thinking it was fun to perform. Even now, I still get nervous when going on-site, but as I would read the script, think about the role and create a foundation for my acting, I feel like I have become able to perform in front of the mic by responding to the acting of the person playing the other role, without thinking about unnecessary things, little by little. The moment I feel that the air has set to motion and it has turned into a drama is, if nothing else, enjoyable. I started having challenges, aspirations and goals for myself, such as, “I want to perform like this more” or, “I could bring this role into life more if I performed like that”.

——What are the fun and difficult parts of voice acting? Please tell us about your future goals too.

I believe the fun in being a voice actor is that we can perform roles that would be difficult in filming or on a stage.

There are many things that you can only learn in a recording site. When I go to them, I find a whole lot of people who are better at acting than I am, so I have to earn a role for myself. I fail most of my auditions and get depressed each time. Even so, I want to keep showing up in those series and play a role that moves the story. I always strongly think that I want to become an actor who can make people go, “I want to use Yano for this” and, “I’m glad I entrusted this role to Yano”.

——From now on, between actor and voice actor, which one to you plan to put more strength into?

Voice actor. That being said, in order to broaden my ranges as an actor too, I think I have to take on all kinds of jobs that require technique for different facial expressions on-stage. For us voice actors, charming people are mostly those who are also charismatic on the stage, so I think I also want to become a charming actor.

——Are you able to return to Tokushima regularly even now?

I make sure to go back as often as I can during summer vacation and New Years.

——Are there any parts of your life in Tokushima that have been put to good use in your acting jobs?

I seldom have any chance to come in contact with anything related to acting in Tokushima. Even if I had interest in voice actors and acting, wanted to attend a training school or thought about going to watch a play, they were all things that could not come true if I stayed in Tokushima. That is why I created many opportunities to come in contact with acting after moving to Tokyo, such as joining my university’s theatre research association and attending a school where I could study voice acting. I think I could cultivate something like a hungry spirit exactly because I used to live in Tokushima.

——If there is anything or any place in Tokushima that you like, please tell us.

Awa Dance, I guess. I did not like it that much when I was little, but after I became an adult, the group dance I watched from a box seat was stunning, and it made me so emotional that I started crying.

Also, the park that my grandfather often took me to when I was a child, though I don’t know if it still exists. I would put rice balls and pickled horseradish in a big plastic container and go there. I have memories of eating them with cold tea from a polyethylene teapot with my grandfather, after playing badminton. I want to do the same with my children and grandchildren when I become a parent and a grandpa.

——Yano-san, since you have made your dream come true, please leave a message to the young people who are chasing their dreams in Tokushima.

Time passes in a flash. For now, please do what you can with all your might. It can be anything, like classes, club activities, cultural festivals, sports festivals or romance.

If there is anything you can work your hardest in over there, please try facing it with all you have. It will certainly become a sustenance for your life from this point onward. I believe that it is better to do something and regret it than to regret not having done it.

Should there be anyone aiming to become an actor, please take action while constantly thinking about how you can get closer to the future that you have as your goal. I think there are surely many things you can do even if you are in Tokushima.

If you do not know what you should do after doing a research and reflecting on it, have courage and go consult someone who can give advice. Nothing is in vain, but rather than spending time not thinking about anything, I believe that spending time thinking about whatever is more worthwhile.

CHAPTER NINE A Moon of My Own

Nina spent the weekend at home, bonding with baby William. She sang swedish songs to him and found that Tom was listening intently, trying to understand the lyrics. She ended up translating for him and teaching him swedish nursery rhymes and pop songs.

"I want a moon of my own, that I can go to, and forget that you left me. I can sit on my moon, and do whatever I want, I'll stay there until everything's alright," Nina translated one of her mother's favourite songs for Tom.

"Thank you for translating," Tom told her with a warm smile.

"No problem," Nina replied and continued to sing for her baby brother. "Jag är fattig bonddräng men jag lever ändå…"

"What was that song about?" Tom asked curiously from the sofa where he was laying down and watching her interactions with the baby.

"It's about a poor farmer boy who works hard everyday," Nina explained. "He gets drunk on Saturdays, gets into fights and sleeps with women. On Sundays he sleeps instead of going to church. Then the work week begins again. Eventually he dies and stands before God, regretful of his sins. But God forgives him and welcomes him into heaven."

"Is that really a children's song?" Tom questioned amusedly.

"The farm boy sings it in 'Emil i Lönneberga', so it’s sort of a children's song, I guess. Or maybe it's meant for the grown ups watching with their children," Nina replied. "It's written by Astrid Lindgren, so it’s for everyone."

"I see. I appreciate the existential theme," Tom told her.

"Me too," Nina agreed and smiled at him. She realised that she enjoyed spending time in his company. Things had become different between them ever since they started working together. She felt like she knew him a bit better now, and ever since he became a father, she had seen a more sensitive side of him. He had expressed his worry for her in more tactful ways and they hadn't been arguing as much as they used to do.

“You’ve spent most weekends at home lately, is something up?” Nina’s mother asked her during dinner.

“I’ve just been tired from work, so I haven’t really felt like doing anything on the weekends,” Nina replied with a shrug.

“Perhaps you should work fewer hours if work is making you so tired,” Helena suggested, looking a bit concerned as she gently caressed her daughter’s cheek. “She could do that, right Tom?”

“I’ve already offered that,” Tom replied, also assuming a look of concern as he looked at Nina. “The offer still stands.”

“No thanks, I’m good,” Nina insisted.

“But you don’t seem to have any energy left for your friends,” Helena objected.

“Isn’t that what life is like as a grown up? All work, no play, and then you die?” Nina questioned gloomily.

“Nina, are you getting depressed again? Are you taking your medications?” Helena asked concernedly.

Nina sighed heavily in response. “I can’t recall ever becoming undepressed,” she muttered and got up from the dinner table, grabbing her plate and glass. “Thanks for the food.”

“You’re welcome,” Tom replied as she left the dining room.

Nina threw away the rest of the food and placed the dishes in the dishwasher before heading to the fridge, grabbing another one of her precious energy drinks. At least they presented her with some joy in her quite lonely life. She would occassionally call Jim over for sex, but other than that, she spent most of her time alone. Nina’s loneliness had been a source of concern for her mother for many years. It had even gotten to the point that Nina sometimes went out for hour long walks, telling her mother that she was seeing a friend. She had done that a lot during the summer, taking a book with her to sit and read by the sea. Her favourite book was one that Tom had gifted her for her nineteenth birthday. It was called The Stranger and was about the absurdity of life and the feeling of alienation. Nina felt alienated a lot of the time, as though she did not belong anywhere in this world.

During the evening, Tom came by her room to check on her.

“Can I come in?” he requested and Nina nodded at him as she sat up in her bed, putting her laptop aside. “We worry about you.”

“There’s nothing to worry about,” Nina told him, pulling her knees up to her chest, hugging them.

“You seem... lonely,” Tom said carefully.

“I need to be alone a lot,” Nina told him. “Being around people takes a lot of energy.”

“Then maybe you should work shorter hours, so you have energy to do fun things with friends and not only work,” Tom suggested. Nina snorted in response.

“What friends?” she asked.

“How about the one you spent a lot of time with this summer? Viktoria?” Tom said.

“Viktoria is not real,” Nina admitted.

“What?” Tom asked confusedly.

“I made her up so mom wouldn’t worry so much about me being alone,” she explained.

“But you were away for hours at a time, sometimes all day and sometimes all night,” Tom said frowningly.

“Yeah, it was kind of fun actually, how you never figured it out when you never got to meet her,” Nina told him with a sad smile. “It’s kind of pathetic, isn’t it? Making up imaginary friends when you’re twenty? And still living with your mother because you’re too afraid of what you would do to yourself if you had to live alone?” she confided in him.

“It’s not pathetic,” Tom said earnestly and put an arm around her shoulders. “I had no idea you were feeling that way. I thought you lived with your mom because you were comfortable that way, not because you were afraid to live alone.”

“Please don’t tell mom about this. I’ve told her that Viktoria moved to Stockholm, so please don’t tell her that she never even existed. She was so happy when she thought I had a best friend,” Nina pleaded.

“I won’t tell her. But I think you need to see someone about this. Didn’t you have a psychologist?” Tom asked.

“It didn’t work out between us, so I stopped going,” Nina reminded him.

“Right,” Tom remembered. “How about finding you a new one. I’ll be more than happy to pay for it.”

“You don’t have to pay for it,” Nina told him. “You gave me a job, remember? I can pay for therapy myself now. Especially as I’m living here for free.”

“I want you to save your money for the future or use them to have fun. I’m paying for your therapy,” Tom insisted.

“I never even agreed that I would go see a therapist,” Nina said.

“Please, see a therapist. It would give your mother and I some peace of mind to know that you have someone to talk to about those things,” Tom pleaded.

“I'll think about it,” Nina told him.

“Thank you,” Tom said with an appreciative smile.

The weekend passed and it was soon Monday again. Nina looked up to see Benedict standing by her desk. He didn’t look pleased. He was probably still upset by the fact that she had spied on him and his family.

“I would like to have a word with you in my office, miss Andersson,” he requested calmly, seemingly holding back on his anger. Nina looked up at him defiantly.

“How about no?” she told him irritably. She didn’t want to be alone with him, because she would probably end up almost having sex with him.

“No?” he questioned incredulously and leaned down over the desk, so that their faces were just decimetres away from each other. She could feel the smell of his cologne and felt an involuntary thrill of excitement run through her body as she looked him in his darkened eyes. “My office now,” he told her firmly in a low voice.

“Fine,” Nina finally agreed, afraid that Benedict would make a scene otherwise. He looked like he could barely contain his anger. She glanced over her shoulder at her colleagues as she followed him to his office. They all seemed busy doing their jobs, not taking notice of what was going on between her and Benedict. She felt relieved. It would be embarrassing if they thought she made major work related mistakes that would have one of her bosses get angry with her. While she had made a major mistake, at least it was not work related.

Benedict shut the curtain and locked the door, just like he had done preceding week. Nina swallowed nervously. Was he going to beat her again? She knew she would agree to it, even if she wished she would have had the integrity and self-respect to tell him no.

"What the hell were you thinking sneaking around my house?" he demanded angrily. "What if Sophie had seen you?"

"Then you would probably be able to come up with a good lie to explain my presence. Because it comes naturally to you, doesn't it? Lying," Nina told him bitterly.

"I hate lying to my wife," Benedict told her. "I already told you that."

"Then don't give yourself any reasons to lie," she replied.

He approached her angrily and Nina found herself slapping him hard across the face. He looked at her in astonishment for a brief moment, then grabbed her by the arm dragging her with him towards the desk. Nina felt herself grow moist between the legs and a tingling sensation in her lower abdomen as he bent her over the desk. She shut her eyes tightly as he pressed her face down against the desk surface and she bit her lip hard as she braced herself for the pain to come. Benedict slapped her bottom hard with his hand several times, before undoing his belt. This time, he waited between the lashes for Nina to recover before landing the next one across her buttocks. Nina whimpered slightly as she neared her limit and he stopped hitting her with the belt. He roughly grabbed her ass, squeezing it with his hands before rolling up her tight pencil skirt over her hips. Nina gasped as he unexpectedly ripped her tights open in the groin and put his hand between her thighs.

“You naughty girl,” he told her as he felt how wet she was. He touched her, moved the thong to the side and entered her with two fingers at a time. “Of course, I don’t want a child with someone like you,” Nina told him irritably.

“Don’t forget to take the coffee cup with you,” Benedict reminded her with a smirk. Nina angrily went back towards his desk and grabbed the coffee cup, before stalking out of his office. What the hell had she just done?

Nina went into the kitchen and angrily threw the coffee cup into the trash. She then proceeded to kick the trash can until a familiar voice interrupted her.

“Did mister Cumberbatch yell at you again?” Stina asked concernedly.

“He did,” Nina replied, her eyes filling up with tears. Stina went up to her and hugged her.

“I’m sorry that he’s being such an ass to you,” Stina told her sympathetically. “If you want to talk about it, I’m all ears.”

“Thank you, Stina,” Nina told her appreciatively and tightened the hug. They stood like that for a long moment until another colleague entered the kitchen.

“Nina, what’s the company’s policy on workplace relationships?” Erik asked her provocatively. He must have somehow heard about their date.

“It’s fine, as long as you’re keeping it professional at work,” Nina told him as she stepped away from Stina.

“That didn’t look very professional to me,” Erik told her.

“It was just a hug, Erik,” Stina told him and smiled carefreely at him. “I can give you one too, if you like,” she offered cheerfully. “You look like you could use one.”

“No thanks,” Erik said with a grimace and hurriedly left the kitchen.

Nina and Stina shared amused looks before heading back to work.

Nina felt weighed down by guilt for what she had done, but somehow managed to get through the workday. Benedict cheerfully told her goodbye before heading homewards and she replied with an exaggeratedly gleeful ‘see you tomorrow!’ Her smile faded the moment he turned away from her and was replaced by a dark glare.

“What are you glaring at Ben for?” Andrew asked her curiously and she flinched. She hadn’t noticed him standing there a few metres away, watching her interaction with Benedict. “Did something happen?”

“He yelled at me,” Nina said and noticed Stina looking at them from a distance. She couldn’t exactly tell Andrew the truth, now could she? She felt like she wanted to come clean to someone about it, but didn’t know who.

“What for?” Andrew asked and Nina searched her mind for some error she could have made that would make Benedict yell at her.

“I misspelled his name in an important mail,” she lied. “I wrote Cucumberbatch and he found it humiliating.” She couldn’t help but smile at her own lie. Andrew returned her smile.

“I see,” he said amusedly. “I could talk to him about treating you more gently, if you like,” he offered, but Nina shook her head at him in response.

“I’m fine. Now that it’s over, I do find it kind of funny,” she assured him with a genuinely bright smile. She wanted so badly to believe her own lie. How great it would have been if only it had been true.

But it wasn’t true. On the way home, Tom put on her mother’s favourite song about wanting a moon of your own to go to and stay there until everything was alright again. Nina’s filled with tears as she thought about how she just wanted to escape somewhere far away from everything. She wanted a moon of her own to go to.

“Are you alright?” Tom asked her concernedly.

“Yes, I was just thinking about Ted,” Nina told him.

“Ted Gärdestad? Who sings the song?” Tom asked her.

“Yeah. I was thinking about how beautifully he sang and how sadly he died. He killed himself,” Nina told him sadly.

“That’s very tragic,” Tom replied seriously and threw her concerned looks for the rest of the car ride home.

“I’m going for a walk,” Nina informed her mother and Tom after taking a shower and getting dressed into a pair of jeans and a David Bowie t-shirt.

“But dinner is almost ready,” her mother objected.

“I’ll eat when I get back,” Nina assured her and put her shoes and jacket on. Tom took out the trash bags out of the kitchen bins and put on a pair of slippers, following her out.

“Nina,” he said as they reached the bins outside the house. She turned around to look at him. He had a concerned look on his face. “You’re not thinking about doing something rash, are you?” he asked her seriously. Nina frowned slightly and then remembered their conversation in the car earlier.

“I’m not thinking of killing myself, if that’s what you’re talking about,” she told him frankly.

“Good,” Tom replied with a brief smile. His blue eyes still conveyed concern. “Don’t be too long or we’ll get worried.”

“I’m twenty years old,” Nina reminded him. “Not a kid, I can look after myself.”

“I know. But I still want you to be careful and not stay out too long,” Tom insisted. “Remember that you have work tomorrow.”

“I know. See you in a bit,” Nina told him.

Nina just kept walking as she listened to music and tried not to think too much about what was weighing her down. Eventually, she sat down by a lake and looked at the full moon in the sky. Its light was mirrored by the water surface of the lake and she found it breathtakingly beautiful. She turned off the music on her phone and sang softly to herself where she sat on the rocks. She sang the song about the moon as tears rolled down her face. She imagined what Ted must have felt like during his last moments of life and was filled by death agony. She put her phone and headphones down on the rocks before standing up. She looked at the water surface and dived into the cold water with her clothes on. As she reached the surface, Nina gasped at how cold it was and swam back up to the rocks where she climbed up and grabbed her phone.

She was shuddering with cold as she walked back home in soaking wet clothes. As she got inside, Tom came to greet her in the hallway and looked at her in shock.

“What happened?” he asked frowningly.

“I fell,” Nina lied.

“Should I put your phone in a bag of rice?” he offered.

“The phone is fine,” Nina told him. Tom looked at her suspiciously.

“You didn’t fall, did you?” he asked frankly. Nina shrugged at him. “I asked you not to do anything rash.”

“It wasn’t rash, I spared my phone and headphones,” Nina objected.

“Your lips are blue. Come, let’s go down to the basement so your mother doesn’t see you like this,” Tom told her, putting a gentle arm around her shoulder as he walked her down to the basement. “Clothes off and step in the shower, I’ll get you some dry clothes,” he instructed and respectfully turned away as Nina immodestly began to take her clothes off in front of him. She wasn’t trying to seduce him or anything, she was just too cold to care if he saw her naked body.

Nina took a hot shower and smiled sadly to herself as she found a towel and clothes laid out for her. Tom was always being so nice and gentle towards her. For once she felt grateful that he was a little bit boring and not more like Benedict. She realised that she would never be able to live with the guilt if she managed to get Tom to be unfaithful to her mother. She got dressed and went upstairs to find Tom on the sofa in the living room. She walked up to him and smiled.

“Thank you for being so boring,” she told him, causing him to laugh surprisedly.

“I don’t think I’m that boring,” he objected as she sat down in the armchair next to the sofa.

“You’re just the right amount of boring,” Nina said. “I mean it as a compliment.”

“Thanks, I guess,” Tom told her amusedly. “You seem a bit happier now.”

“I am,” Nina told him with a smile.

Bay City Rollers – “Saturday Night” -- January 3, 1976

They prove they can spell Saturday a lot. Anyway, he's going out to dance with his girl on Saturday night. The song is bouncy to a fault -- I feel like the repetitive, samey beat is following one of those balls the mind-controlled kids bounced in A Wrinkle in Time. It sounds like a cheerleading chant. Something to do aerobics to, not to dance to.

C.W. McCall – “Convoy” -- January 10, 1976

So, besides the cb radio fad, 1976 was also the year of the OPEC oil crisis and basically, it seems the reason truckers became folk heroes evading The Man in popular consciousness had its roots in international relations. Anyway, it's a baritone story song, but about truckers instead of cowboys. I like the verse, "Well, we shot the line and we went for broke/ With a thousand screamin' trucks/ An' eleven long-haired Friends o' Jesus/ In a chartreuse micro-bus." It's a silly song with a lot of trucker lingo (or fake trucker lingo, idk), and I don't exactly dislike it, but I'm not gonna listen to it again either.

Barry Manilow – “I Write The Songs” -- January 17, 1976

It's obvious from the first lines "I've been alive forever/ And I wrote the very first songs" that Barry's not singing about himself. It turns out "music" wrote the all the songs. Except that's obnoxious too. People wrote the songs. Also possibly birds, but definitely people. And it's musical goo.

Diana Ross – “Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You’re Going To)” -- January 24, 1976

It's a song about regretting letting an ex go, and probably more. There's a ton of orchestration that sounds like it belongs in a lightweight movie, and Diana Ross doesn't put much emotion into it. It is a thoughtful song, rather than one calling for melodrama, but I would like to hear some emotion here, and I am not getting it. A trifle light as air.

Ohio Players – “Love Rollercoaster” -- January 31, 1976

It's a funk/disco thing. I've listened to it three times trying to get anything from it at all. The lyrics are dumb, asserting love is like this or that amusement park experience. I'd think "love rollercoaster" would be about how there are huge highs and terrifying lows, but it's not. It's horribly repetitive. I guess it's danceable. But I find it dull.

Paul Simon – “50 Ways To Leave Your Lover” -- February 7, 1976

I love how pared down this song is. It's sort of funky, without all the funk orchestration. The simple drums are the main focus. The melody's also simple, without being dull. And the lyrics aren't complex; a woman is encouraging the narrator to leave his official lover for her. "Just get yourself free." But she's doing it so very nicely -- "I wish there were something I could do to make you smile again." Not that the song expects us to believe she or the narrator actually are nice. Or that it's really all that easy to leave your lover. But it doesn't tell you what to think about the situation either. An excellent song.

Rhythm Heritage – “Theme From S.W.A.T.“ -- February 28, 1976

Apparently, there was a TV show about S.W.A.T., and this was its instrumental theme song. Which is exactly what it sounds like. Not a good TV theme either. I looked up 1976 shows, and here are some shows with better TV themes from that year: Charlie's Angels, Alice, M*A*S*H, Happy Days (which surprisingly only hit #5), All in the Family, Barney Miller, Welcome Back Kotter (which hit #1 later), The Jeffersons (that Movin' On Up doesn't seem to have been a hit is shocking), The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Sanford and Son, The Bob Newhart Show... look, all of them. All shows in 1976 that I can find had better theme songs than S.W.A.T., often to a staggering degree. But songs don't reach #1 for being good. Still, usually I can hazard a reason for them. I can't for this one.

The Four Seasons – “December, 1963 (Oh, What A Night)” -- March 13, 1976

It's about the narrator getting laid for the first time. He didn't even know the name of the woman, which completely undercuts anything happy or fun about this song for me, and makes it icky. At least it's not falsetto. I wasn't born when it came out, yet it was overplayed on the oldies stations in the 90s so much that I developed a deep and abiding hatred for it.

Johnnie Taylor – “Disco Lady” -- April 3, 1976

This is a song about disco that isn't a disco song. As such, it confuses me. It's kind of a mild funk/soul song, and it's about how turned on this guy is watching a woman disco. Johnnie Taylor can definitely sing, and I'd like to hear some more traditional soul/jazz stuff from him. This isn't doing it for me.

The Bellamy Brothers – “Let Your Love Flow” -- May 1, 1976

I saw the title and immediately the song shoved itself into my head. It's such a mellow song, but the hook is still monstrous. The song is about how it's the season for love, so grab your lover and "let your love flow." It's one of many 70s songs about sex that sounds like it could be a song about how pretty trees are. It kind of is about how pretty trees are too. I rather like it.

John Sebastian – “Welcome Back” -- May 8, 1976

Welcome Back, Kotter was not on Nick at Nite or WGN or anything else that ran old TV shows when I was watching TV (rather than the internet), so I've never seen it. The theme song lays it all out -- someone moves back to his old neighborhood, where they need him. As TV theme songs go, it's fine. Just fine, though. When "Movin' On Up" and "Love Is All Around" were also theme songs for TV shows in 1976, why this one? The rewards of mediocrity I guess.

The Sylvers – “Boogie Fever” -- May 15, 1976

It's literal. You come in contact with someone who can't stop boogie-ing, and you will catch the Boogie Fever yourself. Listening to the song will certainly make you want to boogie, unless you are immune. A fun dance song, and I wouldn't be surprised if Tik-Tok made it a hit again in the next year.

Wings – “Silly Love Songs” -- May 22, 1976

"Some people want to fill the world with silly love songs / What’s wrong with that?" Nothing. Paul even emphasizes something important in it: "Love isn't silly at all." Still, I can't say it's one of my favorites. I get tired of it about halfway through, and it's a long song. A silly love song shouldn't be nearly 6 minutes long.

Diana Ross – “Love Hangover” -- May 29, 1976

It starts with Diana Ross making sex sounds that I find embarrassing. Then she goes into singing about how she doesn't want to get over "the sweetest love hangover", and a minute and a half in it becomes a disco song. I find the entire thing irritating.

Starland Vocal Band – “Afternoon Delight” -- July 10, 1976

"Afternoon delight" is sex, but these doofuses may as well be singing about tea and scones for all the excitement this song has. It still doesn't deserve the hatred it's gotten. But it's not good either. The number of sexless sex songs in the 70s is just... ugh.

The Manhattans – “Kiss And Say Goodbye” -- July 24, 1976

He has to break up with the person he's been cheating with. It's an achingly sad Philly soul song. It also manages to be way sexier than the vast majority of 70s sex songs. Real emotion (or the ability to fake real emotion) does a lot, as does being able to sing like this. And beautiful backing music. It's so sad, and so good.

Elton John & Kiki Dee – “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” -- August 7, 1976

This song isn't mutual. Elton John's the one who sings "don't go breaking my heart," and Kiki Dee's the one singing "I won't go breaking your heart." It is all and entirely and completely about the male character's feelings. Of course it's an Elton John song so I wouldn't like it anyway, but I really don't like this one, especially because it still gets airplay.

Bee Gees – “You Should Be Dancing” -- September 4, 1976

I hate the Bee Gees. Not on a personal level -- as far as I know they're perfectly decent people -- but their music. And I have a particular hatred for Barry Gibb's voice. His horrible falsetto has caused me immense pain in my life. If I should be dancing, then they need to shut up and sit down and let a band that I can dance to take the stage. As it is, I feel like a dog during the 4th of July; I just want to hide under a bed.

KC & The Sunshine Band – “(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty” -- September 11, 1976

Here's a command to dance that I can get behind. Or that my behind can get behind. Again, a great song for dancing but not for listening to from KC & The Sunshine Band.

Wild Cherry – “Play That Funky Music” -- September 18, 1976

Good for both dancing and listening. How you can listen and not get into that funk groove even when sitting, though, I don't know. Play that funky music till you die.

Walter Murphy & The Big Apple Band – “A Fifth Of Beethoven” -- October 9, 1976

This was the #1 hit the week I was born. It's a good one for me; it's by a guy who loved classical music enough to write contemporary music based on it. Whenever I'm faced with questions about what kind of music is my favorite, my answer is "the good kind." Anyway, this is a fun song.

Rick Dees And His Cast Of Idiots – “Disco Duck (Part 1)” -- October 16, 1976

Billboard used to base their hit songs on calling record stores and asking what was selling. I think that's how this stupid, stupid song reached number one. I think it was a prank by a bunch of stoned college kids who co-ordinated it over cb radio or something. It's about a duck. Who discos. With an obnoxious voice and obnoxious music. It's by a radio dj, and is as painfully unfunny as radio djs usually are.

Chicago – “If You Leave Me Now” -- October 23, 1976

This song makes me have a weird reaction. It gives me the warm, comfortable fuzzies, and makes me want to sleep. That last part might not be too surprising, as it is a soft song, but to me it is very much more than that. I have always had trouble sleeping at night, since birth. My parents hit on putting me into the car and driving around with soft music playing to get me to go lights out. I need to ask them if they played Chicago during that. I can't think of any other reason for my hindbrain association with this szzzzzzz....

Steve Miller Band – “Rock’n Me” -- November 6, 1976

Good bar rock, since it's the Steve Miller Band. Lyrically, it's also more complex than most of its genre. At first, he sings "I got to please my sweet baby, yeah." Then he starts singing about all the places he's been, including "Northern California where the girls are warm." And then "Babe, you know you are a friend of mine/ And you know that it's true/ That all the things that I do/ Are gonna come back to you in your sweet time." Well then. I can totally see @katatty's Duncan Huckleberry singing this song. And getting away with everything. It's a fun song, though (because?) the narrator is likely a dirtbag.

Rod Stewart – “Tonight’s The Night (Gonna Be Alright)” -- November 13, 1976

It's a sex song, and it is hugely skeevy. "Don't deny your man's desire/ You’d be a fool to stop this tide / Spread your wings and let me come inside." No, asshole, cover it up if you want to come near. And how about if you want her, you care something about her desire? This was a huge hit from a huge star, but I have never heard it until now. Ugh. I need to shower, this is gross. Also I hope whoever he's singing to is packing mace.

BEST OF 1976 -- "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover." I don't even think it's an amazing song, just a very good one, but the 1976 #1s don't leave me much to work with. Fleetwood Mac released some singles, but people wanted "Disco Duck" rather than "Over My Head." Tons of great music has survived from 1976, but most of it is not on this list. WORST OF 1976 -- "Tonight's the Night (Gonna Be Alright)". "Disco Duck" is stupid, but it doesn't make my skin crawl.

Reasons I love Monika (DDLC)

- She gives genuine writing advice in some parts of that game that actually helped me write poetry

- She only treated her friends the way that she did because she knew that they weren't real, and even then, she couldn't bring herself to delete them. (She's not some crazy yandere like a lot of people portray her)

- She has her hand out in the main menu because she wants you to pull her out of the game with that hand oof

- She didn't really delete her friends, but the player deleted her for real. That would sting real bad. But even after that, she still loves you and helps you by deleting the game that's only causing your suffering. Like, you did such a horrible thing to her, and yet she still goes out of her way to help you.

- I find it so interesting that none of the other girls (when not influenced by Monika) never say "hey, you've never really spent much time with Monika". It really feels like she's being ignored, and I feel really bad for her. The game really is leaving her out of things, that must hurt.

- She gave genuine advice to MC once Sayori started acting weird. Right after that, yes, she likely said something pretty nasty to Sayori, but what she said to MC was pretty good advice, from what I remember (might need to see the dialogue again oops)

- I love the amount of genuine emotion that goes into her poetry. I don't know how the author of those poems went "this is how I would write a poem if I felt trapped in a game and pushed away from the only real thing in sight", but I really love it so much. She and Sayori have some of my favourite poems in the game.

- I like how unique she is! A lot of it is likely her trying to stand out, but things like her name ending with "a" when everyone else's ends with "i" was probably not a change that she made. I feel like that was her name to begin with, and she's supposed to be different because she's not supposed to be a character that you can date.

- She learns piano pretty fast and I don't know if she actually learned piano that fast or if she already knew piano and just never had a chance to play for the player but I love her for it either way lol

- She's the only character that doesn't really care about MC. She's in love with the player, not MC. She can only get to the player through MC and that's why she wants to spend time with him.

- Her song (Your Reality) is my favourite song and a lot of its lyrics are pretty relatable to me personally. I won't go too into detail about that, but it's a really good song that does a great job of showing how Monika feels.

- Monika honestly loved the literature club and her friends (her own dying words, I'm not making that up) and the fact that she cared that much about them is actually pretty sweet. She's used to bigger clubs where she probably doesn't know everyone super well, so being in a smaller club full of closer friends probably could have been nice for her.

- The fact that she stares into space and just stops listening to people around her is actually so relatable I can't—

- She's supposed to stand out but her hair isn't nearly as bright as the other girls. I guess that's because she's not supposed to be a love interest, so she was made to look less bright, but I love that it's like reverse main character syndrome. Like, when you see that shot of a classroom with all the boring students and that one bright main character? Imagine that flipped. There's Monika, the one plain student lol

- She was programmed to be the popular girl but MC's not supposed to give her any attention, that's kind of harsh. I know she was tired of the popular clubs, but that doesn't mean that he should have to avoid her like that. It's sad, because she's probably used to it being easier to get people's attention and she was probably pretty upset to discover that her only option was to make the other girls unlikeable.

- I wish I had her confidence. I know it's a whole thing in the game that she says she's not all that confident, she just has to seem more confident because she's the president of a club, but even pretending to be confident is so much work and... god, I love how much work she puts into things.

- The way she actually listens to her club and apologizes for her mistakes is... so good. I just love when Natsuki storms out because she didn't ask for her opinion, and then when she comes back the next day, Monika makes it a priority to talk to her. I know tons of people who would give a lazy apology last minute because "Natsuki's being all childish, it's not my fault she's angry about it" or some stupid excuse like that.

- A lot of the time, I wish there was an option to answer her questions, or to genuinely write her a poem. I know there are probably mods that you can use to do that, but I mean for real in the game before you delete her. Like, when she asks for your favourite colour, I really want to tell her. And when she asks you to write a poem, I want a real poem mini game and not just the word "Monika" over and over. She's the only character that can't be given answers and I feel bad about it.

- I like that she realizes her mistakes when you delete her because you can't tell her what she did wrong. And then she brings back the world, taking herself out of it. That's really sad, because she thinks that she did what you wanted, which is bringing back the game without her. She basically killed herself because "this is what the player wants, right? They hate me, they deleted me, they don't want me in their game". People really don't make a big enough deal out of deleting her, you basically killed her. She didn't even delete her friends, but you deleted her.

- She's so talented, I wish I had the patience to learn to do that many things. Like, she knows piano, she has a genuine love for literature and talent at writing poetry, she can sing, she has been the leader of several clubs, she learned basic coding very quickly... These would normally be very difficult things to learn, but she's such a fast learner and that's so awesome.

So I know that she's pretty hated, but I like to consider Monika "best girl". If she had a route, I'd probably go with hers. No matter your opinion on her, please don't dislike mine. I have nothing against your opinion, you're allowed to dislike Monika. I just felt like sharing my thoughts so that people could have a more open mind about her. She wasn't as horrible a person as many people say and I really wish that more people liked her and really looked at her character properly.
