SOON TO BE RELEASED “US” MOVIE OPENS SXSW FILM

     The “red people” invaded Austin, Texas on opening night of the SXSW Film Festival 2019 at the packed to capacity Paramount Theatre. SXSW Film launched the epitome of a horror movie showcasing monsters, killers, gory sets, twists and turns, gruesome bodies and surprising triumphs throughout the film.

   Those fortunate to witness the festival’s premiere of US, laughed, screamed and applauded throughout the evening. The humour threaded throughout the film helped offset the horror and collectively, made for a highly entertaining night!  

   The Academy Award® winning Get Out visionary Jordan Peele returned with yet another original nightmare that he wrote, directed and produced. Even Peele chuckled saying during a Q&A Session, “With a larger budget than Get Out, I was able to do more with US!” And more is what we saw.

   Jordan’s dream lead actor for US was Academy Award® winning actress Lupita Nyong'o, who immediately joined the cast after reading the script from her agent.

     Nyong'o only needed two words to explain why she agreed to star in US, "Jordan Peele," she said in an interview with BuzzFeed News’ Profile at SXSW on Saturday, alongside Peele and her co-star, Winston Duke. The Villager Newspaper was invited to attend this sizzling hot interview by the Comcast NBC Universal House.

         Nyong'o became a major fan of Peele after watching Get Out five times, which released while she filmed Black Panther.

    The US film is set in present day along the iconic Northern California coastline. Nyong'o stars as Adelaide Wilson, a woman returning to her beachside childhood home with her husband, Gabe (Black Panther’s Winston Duke), and their two children (Shahadi Wright Joseph, Evan Alex) for an idyllic summer getaway.

     Haunted by an unexplainable and unresolved trauma from her past and compounded by a string of eerie coincidences, Adelaide feels her paranoia elevate to high-alert as she grows increasingly certain that something bad is going to befall her family.

   After spending a tense beach day with their friends, the Tylers (Emmy winner Elisabeth Moss, Tim Heidecker, Cali Sheldon, Noelle Sheldon), Adelaide and her family return to their vacation home to discover the silhouettes of four figures standing in their driveway. US pits an ordinary American family against a terrifying and uncanny opponent: non-biologically related look-alikes of themselves!

    The question might appropriately be asked, ‘how far will you go to protect your family?’ In this film, we see the main actors going to extreme ends to keep their loved ones alive in spite of overwhelming obstacles.

   This is a must-see film set to release nationwide March 22. Kudos to SXSW and Universal Studios for opening the festival with such an outstanding release!

I didn’t know that I needed to see a film about the pandemic, filmed during the pandemic, to help me get through this godawful pandemic, but @sorofilms #recovery @sxsw was just what I needed. Laughter is the best medicine, and this lighthearted film about two sisters trying to rescue their Nana from a nursing home to avoid Covid uses humor to reveal and uplift us during this shared experience. The new Pennywise terrified the young cast of Stephen King’s IT reboot.

It hits theaters on September 18th, 2017

Time will tell if the remake of Stephen King’s IT will scare a new generation of horror fans. But already, its menacing star, the “clown” Pennywise, has successfully spooked one group: the movie’s cast.

Director Andrés Muschietti brought a few clips of IT to SXSW 2017, as well as a few tidbits about what to expect. Early press images of Pennywise have already done the legwork of visually separating Bill Skarsgard’s version of the character from that of Tim Curry’s portrayal. But according to Muschietti, the two Pennywises also have different personalities.

Curry’s clown was a cartoonish nightmare in need of dental hygiene. In one of the film’s most iconic scenes, a little boy named Georgie loses his paper boat in the sewer. When he peers into the darkness below, he’s confronted by Curry’s chatty clown, who announces his presence with a saccharine “Hi, Georgie!” Muschietti teased his take on the scene with a short clip, and the difference is immediate. Skarsgard’s Pennywise has a far more sinister edge, marked by piercing yellow eyes and contorted movements. For those who are familiar with the source material, the anticipation of what’s to come makes the entire sequence agonizingly tense.

The director remains insistent on keeping Pennywise’s secrets. He’s been tight-lipped about the character, even with his cast. When preparing for the film, he did his best to keep Skarsgard separated from the film’s child actors. The actor wasn’t introduced to the young cast until Pennywise’s first encounter with the children. “It was something that we agreed on, and that's how it happened,” he said.

The tactic proved to be an effective one. The young cast was confident they wouldn’t be afraid of their painted adversary. They were wrong. “The day that he showed up on the stage, they fucking freaked out,” Muschietti said. “Bill is like, seven-foot high, and I can't describe how scary he looks in person. He's a wiry man, crouching, making sounds, snotting, drooling, speaking in Swedish sometimes. Terrifying.”

Muschietti’s version of It will also take care to expand the story of the Loser’s Club, the group that connects the kids. The film will also add plot beats and scenes that don’t appear in either the novel or miniseries. It will, however, still use the town of Derry to help illustrate just how deep Pennywise’s influence runs. “[Derry is] not only the place where the Losers live and have their exchanges, but it's also the extension of the evil of Pennywise,” he said.

“The sense of dread that grows in Derry is part of the dread of Pennywise. Pennywise is not just a character that is shapeshifting. His influence is all around and he's projecting this in the town of Derry and in the grownups of Derry. It's all part of that atmosphere of dread that is even the anticipation than the scares in this movie.”

It hits theaters in September. When asked about rumors that an “It: Part 2” would begin filming this month, Muschietti brushed them aside. "It's just a complete misinterpretation of the facts,” he said. “It's not happening now. We're in the midst of post [production].”
