YIPPEE YAHOO! A brand swirlin' new snail fresh for 2023! It has been quite a long time now since we've gotten a new Mario snail, and even since I've posted about one, since I covered all the snailiest Mario snails a while ago. But lookie here! Snaily snaily snail for me to see and for you to view!

Swirlypod is so delightful! To get this out of the way first, yes, its eyes are not on the ends of stalks. Yes, this is good and okay. Some snails are like that! Especially freshwater snails. And that's the kind of snail that this snail seems to be! While sometimes seen on land, it is also seen emerging from (poisonous) swamps. It can breathe that!

Swirlypod's face is just so, so precious. Its big, innocent, curious eyes experiencing the world in the way only a snail could! Its big ol' bulbous antennae, more bulbous than they have any right being, more like a nudibranch's than a normal snail's! And its mouth! I think that's its mouth? It's like three scrumbly tentacles ready to scrumble down some delicious fungus!

Did you know that the salt marsh snail Littoraria irrorata is able to FARM fungus? They damage marsh grasses to create large wounds for fungus to grow in, and even use their own poop as fertilizer! Snails can FARM!

Yes, indeed, what a wonderful snail we have here! Thank you, Super Mario Bros. Wonder!

...Hey! That shell comes right off! Now it's all Pod, with no Swirly! Does this mean Lime is The Impostor? I may have just asked you, but that was rhetorical. Don't ask me, because I don't know! Removable shells are a common ability for cartoon snails, and of course, the turtles of this world also have removable shells. I think it doesn't really mean much at all! Though, the idea of a "hermit slug" is very amusing. A snail who can't be bothered to grow its own shell. Maybe it wants to switch shells for different styles sometimes. A slow victim of fast fashion!

Wonder is one of those games where Koopa Troopas retreat into their shells when stomped, so Swirlypod is sort of a way to have Beach Koopa in the same game as the more standardly-behaving Koopa! Once it gets back on its foot, it will try to squirm back into a shell, if one is available. You can give it back! Just drop it down at your feet, and Swirlypod will have a home once more!

Another thing that sets Swirlypods apart from Koopas is that they are sticky slimy and can slither up and down vertical surfaces! Just like in real life! They don't only climb on the left and right sides of surfaces, either. They can even go on the surface facing the screen! Not just anyone is allowed to do that!

I am saving what may be the best tidbit for last! There is a good chance Swirlypod's bulbous antennae look familiar to you. That's because they look just like Leucochloridium paradoxum, the green-banded broodsac, everyone's favorite snail parasite! The flatworm that inhabits a snail's eyestalks, making them look more like caterpillars to get a bird to eat them so they can continue their life cycle! Swirlypod definitely isn't supposed to be like, ACTUALLY infected by this funny worm, but I think the resemblance is very much intentional, between the shape and coloring. And that is so awesome to see! This isn't even meant to be a scary snail or anything, but they represented a freaky parasite anyway!

Buttons!! I found all these in a button bag at the thrift store for like 3 bucks. They're perfect for some solarpunk clothing projects I wanna do

They're mostly wood, coconut shell and metal, and a few plastic ones and they're all so beautiful. I wanted to post them just cause I like sharing my treasures and shinies <3

The 5th image has two rectangular wooden shank buttons (shank buttons have no holes, they have a plastic, metal or wood loop on the back). One is green with peas on the front and the other is red with an eggplant, both are designed like packets of seeds. Almost an inch tall and half an inch wide

The 6th image is a variety of metal shank buttons in various sizes. A set of two large aged brass colored ones with an intricate sun design, a small brass one with a different intricate sun design, a large aged silver one with wildflowers and a butterfly on it, a small brass one with simple leaf designs on it, a small copper colored button with a tree of life, a shiny silver one with intricate geometric designs (hard to describe) and a set of two small hexagon shaped silver buttons with a smaller hexagon in the middle and black swirly lines outside of the smaller hexagon (my favorite ones)

The final image is of a variety of simple smaller buttons. A simple green resin four-hole one with subtle swirls, a few different flat metal buttons woth no designs, two two-hole buttons that have a silver middle and a clear resin rim, a large two-hole copper colored button made of shell, a small brown plastic button with a single 3D leaf design on the front and a blue wooden star shaped button with two holes. Finnick and his sweet girl are at the beach together, just relaxing in the warm sands of District 4. we all know Finnick LOVES to plat readers hair, so of course, that is what he is doing. he is plating a strand of his sweet girls hair, one of the front pieces if that makes any sense. Reader is just fiddling with some shells as he finishes up that small little braid, but he had to add a finishing touch.

it is one of the ones that’s kinda swirly and pointy if that makes sense (i’m so sorry it’s actually 1am rn). he somehow finds a way to make it fit perfectly at the end of the small braid without it falling off and it looks absolutely ethereal on her😭

all he can do is just stare at his sweet girl in awe and with a massive grin as he’s now found his favourite hairstyle on her.

every. single. morning. he would ask to do that hairstyle, because she just looked so perfect. it was bonus that he also got to sit real close to his sweet sweet girl and let his fingers work his magic in her hair. he’s so proud of himself every time <3

(i’m also convinced that platting/braiding her hair is the only thing Finnick doesn’t teach reader. he will happily teach her knots, but hairstyling? no. that’s his job. it’s his job so he can sit so close to her for a long time and do one of the many things he is good at. so he can stare at his gorgeous girl and appreciate her beauty to the fullest- thanking the stars that he was blessed with an angel who shines brighter than all of the stars combined in the universe <3)

finnick is someone who always needs his hands occupied and so being able to do plait his sweet girls hair just makes him so giddy. the first time he's able to, it's a guarantee he will never stop. he's got such precise, nimble fingers that it barely feels like he's there at all except how relaxing it is. when he's got that shell in, he's convinced she's actually some beautiful sea goddess he's been blessed with, she's so radiant to him.

he's peppering her face with kisses and would spend all day on the beach getting each strand of hair if allowed. which is so tempting with how sweet and eager he is. and yes literally every morning-

reader is getting all ready for the day and about to leave the bedroom and finnick's looking at her confused from the bed

"what's wrong finn?"

"can I do your hair, angel?" he's got those big puppy dog eyes and she lets him which instantly has him grinning. he gets to see every small detail of her as he goes and be so close, it's like heaven to him. so it just becomes a daily routine.

"you know, if you like it that much I don't mind learning, love, I'll be able to do it so you don't have to-"

"no," he's so quick and defensive about it because he just loves it so much. it feels so intimate and blissful to him. "I do it because I love too, sweet girl, I want to."

"so you're seriously not going to teach me?"

he's kissing her on the nose, "just need you to sit there and be my pretty girl, which you need no lessons on."

frank castle + finding you pretty shells

Your favorite part of the beach was all the pretty shells there were to find, new ones being washed up with the tide every second. Frank had spent the whole ten hour drive listening to your rambles about how excited you were to collect shells, where you were going to place them in your home, and who you were going to give some to.

The very first thing you wanted to do after dropping everything off at the hotel and getting situated was to go down to the beach, understandably so. You dug through the bag to put on your swimsuit, all while he was laying down on the bed and groaning like an eighty year old man who needed a cane.

“Frankie, c’mon!!” You pulled at his arm, trying to get him to stand up so you could go find the pretty shells. This was your karma for dating an older man.

“Baby I need five minutes, we just drove ten hours.” He grumbled, rubbing his forehead with the hand you weren’t pulling at. “C’mere, lay with me.”

You obliged and laid next him, complaining that all the best shells were being taken already. He listened to your complaints and tried to reason with you, mostly so he could lay in the bed a little longer and not have to deal with gravity on his bones. After much convincing he finally changed into his swim shorts, rubbed some sunscreen into your face, and walked down to the beach with you.

The tide had made shell pockets in the sand, it felt like gravel under your feet and was the perfect spot to search for shells. You set up the chairs and other stuff a bit away from the shell pocket but still close enough for Frank to keep an eye on, he was convinced someone was going to steal your stuff. You were convinced he spent most of the time at the beach glaring at anyone who breathed near your belongings.

“Look what I found baby.” He handed you a pretty swirly shell, fully intact and not home to a hermit crab or a snail. The proud smile displayed on his face made the find all that much better.

“Frankie!!!” You squealed, taking the shell carefully and flashing him a smile. You placed the shell carefully in your mesh shell bag that Frank had previously bought just in case.

The two of you spent the next few hours in the sand, searching for the prettiest shells to wash up. Handing them to each other with proud smiles before placing them in the bag.
