Tornado Safety
This year’s tornado season prediction for the united states is looking quite grim, so I decided to make this lil tornado safety post.
Difference between Warning and Watch
First you need to know the different between a tornado warning and a tornado watch.
A tornado watch means there is a potential risk for tornadoes.
A tornado warning means that server weather as bean spotted.
The real one you know to get going for is the tornado emergency which means that there is truly something heading your way. However you should respond to all of these appropriately, and if one is issued keep watch for the weather.
What to look out for
The calm before the storm is a real thing. The wind may die down, and the air become still. Everything might fall silent for a moment
The sky is turning dark really fast, or green, or both.
A roar similar to that of a distant freight train. Tornado’s sound like freight trains.
Fast moving and rotating clouds, especially if they’re making a funnel shape
Obviously tornado watches escalating for tornado warnings
What to do
Let’s say the tornado warning is now issued, and eventually a tornado is coming your way. What do you do? Well the situation depends on how immediate the danger is, and what your circumstances are.
First let’s start with the “average”  American advice. Go to the lowest level of your home, and hopefully a basement or storm shelter.
Now if that isn’t an available option, there’s no need to fear or panic. The lowest level of your home is advised. Try an small enclosed room, with low to minimum windows, such as a bathroom, closet, or center hallway.
If you are in a mobile home GET OUT OF THERE.
WHY DOES THE UNITED STATES HAVE THESE, WHEN THEY’RE OVERPRICED ANYWAY, DEATH TRAPS, AND ITS THE COUNTRY WITH THE HIGHEST TORNADO RATES.
Let’s say there’s nowhere to go.
Go to a safe available nearby building, especially if it has a basement. However if that is still not an option lie in the nearest ditch (I know it sounds crazy but it works) and shield your head/neck with your hands
If taking shelter in a home, make sure everyone is with you. That can include pets, but if you’re in a super emergency situation it is better to leave them and get to shelter as quick as possible.
If you can get low and shield head, or body with a mattress, blanket, etc.
Natural Disaster Safety
Doesn’t matter where you live, you should probably have an emergency kit, especially one attuned to the climate of your area. This doubles if you’re in a natural disaster prone area.
Many of those in the United States have learned lately what the consequences of not having the proper equipment on hand are.
So what should you have for a tornado?
Battery Powered Radio
Flashlight
Extra Batteries
First Aid Kit
Water & Canned Food
Emergency things tailored to people of household (medical problems, etc)
If you live in a cold region also have cold safety materials too
What NOT to do & Extra
Don’t disregard the watches, and especially the warnings. They are there for a reason, and you should really keep an eye out. You might even want to head to shelter anyway if the wind is crazy strong.
Don’t stand near windows, or be that classic midwesterner who is on their porch getting a good shot of that swirly cloud of death. I know its fun...but its not safe.
If the situation is an absolute emergency don’t take time to grab your valuable. Its devastating to lose them, I've been there, but you can replace most tiny things and not a life.
Make sure any invalid family members have their own viable tornado plan. My grandma lives in a tornado prone area, and the plan has completely changed since she’s been confined to a walker. Make sure your family members like that have a plan.
Being in a car during a tornado is not safe at all. Drive to nearest shelter, or get out and hop in that ditch.
If the tornado looks like its standing still, it’s not. That shit is heading towards you.
Always be sure to remember to cover your head, or help shield your children.
Myth Busting
Overpasses are not safe shelter for when you’re in a car. It’s a myth, take that ditch instead if need be, or drive to a shelter.
Hiding under your car is dangerous. Tornados can drop on your car, either crushing you or sucking you up into the air along with your vehicle
Cars cannot outrun tornados
Don’t open your windows. It’s not going to stop the tornado from blowing your house over, instead it may even help it. It will allow for debris to enter your home easier, and cause the wind to be able to tear your house apart from the inside out.
Aftermath
It’s hit now, maybe your house was safe or not. Keep track of watches still, tornados can return, or could be apart of a tornado outbreak, meaning a second or even third tornado can hit the area.
Assume all downed lines are active and dangerous, try not to use the gas, electricity, and water til you’re sure its safe.
If you’re not home return home once it’s deemed safe
Keep aware of damaged buildings, glass, debris, etc.
If you want to and have the chance help your fellow man, lost animal, and etc. Checking on people is a kind and lifesaving thing to do, as well as securing people’s pets.
All of this from a person who lived in a tornado prone area growing up, to you.

(DCXDP) The obligations of a rogue versus those of a parent (Pt. 5)
Tw: torture scene (GiW agent receiving), general angst, canon-typical violence (DC), nobody is having a good time
Will be crossposted to AO3 eventually
(Masterlist/subscription post)
It was pretty easy for Danny to forget that Dr. Crane was a rogue at times.
Most of the time he wasn’t comically evil, like what he’d expect of a Gotham rogue. He was helping Danny, even if only because he didn’t want to be taken in by the GiW as well. He was even downright nice most of the time, or at least neutral.
Sure, he had a strange obsession with fear and psychology, but that wasn’t really out of the ordinary for Danny. It didn’t feel like living with a rogue, just like…staying with a distant relative, or something.
He seemed like just an ordinary person.
Today, though, Danny was brought back to reality.
The GiW agent they’d tracked down together writhed on the ground, screaming in pain and terror. Scarecrow was sat a few feet away, setting up a syringe of the antidote he’d made.
After a few more moments, he injected the man with the antidote, watching him like a hawk the entire time.
Suddenly, the man surged forward, lunging at Scarecrow with a feral scream.
Unluckily for him, though, he was still weak from the fear toxin in his system, and from the beatings he’d received prior. Scarecrow easily wrestled him to the ground, settling himself on the broad part of the agent’s back with a vice grip on one of his arms.
“Let’s try again,” he said sharply, all of the warmth Danny had grown used to gone from his voice. “Where is the GiW base of operations?”
The agent took several shuddering breaths before spitting at Scarecrow, defiance and hatred written all over his face.
For just a moment, the room was utterly silent.
“Fine, have it your way.”
Scarecrow began to twist the man’s arm further. It wasn’t long before the agent began to squirm, then writhe, beneath him. Danny’s stomach churned.
“You know,” Scarecrow began, almost conversationally, “there are plenty of jobs that one can get without the use of their legs, especially with the level of education you have. Anything that doesn’t involve hard labor, really.”
The man’s face was beginning to turn red in his struggle not to scream. He took in gasping breaths, the way that his mouth moved almost reminding Danny of a goldfish.
(He felt awful for the comparison, but it was true.)
“However,” Scarecrow continued, “I find you’d be rather hard-pressed to find a job without the use of your arms. Especially in a place like Gotham, where you can always be replaced by someone eager to do your job for even less money. Of course, you could most likely coast off of savings and severance pay for a while, but…”
He leaned closer to the man’s head, his voice lowering.
“Would you be able to live like that? To live with yourself, if you no longer have a purpose?”
He allowed the agent a few seconds of rest before increasing the pressure on his arm. The agent gasped, letting out a strangled hiss. His arm bones were making fascinating noises in response to the strain. Danny felt sick.
“You seem like a rather driven young man. I’m sure your family would hate to see you unmotivated, directionless. Would they resent you, do you think?”
“Fuck you, you—”
The man was cut off by his own scream as Scarecrow finally allowed his arm to break, audibly splintering into thousands of useless shards of bone.
He had the exact pressure memorized. Clearly, he had done this before.
This was wrong. This was wrong.
Shouldn’t Danny step in, do something?
“That won’t heal cleanly. Even with the best medical care in the world, you’ll end up with permanent damage.”
The man below him wheezed and sobbed, choking on air as Scarecrow let go of his arm carelessly, letting it flop back onto the ground.
“Just the sort of thing something like you deserves,” Scarecrow hissed, his voice cold.
“You tortured a child, and you enjoyed it. You laughed with your friends about it. In your notes, one of your friends complained about the screaming,” Scarecrow brought his leg around, grinding his boot into the man’s broken arm. He howled in agony, writhing uncontrollably.
“Was it inconvenient to him, do you think? Too loud? If you were joking about it, clearly you thought so, too. I could fix that as well.”
He drew out another needle, this one once again filled with fear toxin.
“Scarecrow, wait,” Danny choked out.
Scarecrow turned to look at him.
Even his posture was different than usual. He looked… stiff, more like an animal than a man. When he tilted his head at Danny in a silent question, it looked like something in his neck had snapped, his head lolling to the side.
Danny wondered if he was consciously moving like that, or if it was habit at this point.
“You—we don’t have to do this. We can get information some other way, right? You don’t have to…”
Danny looked down at the GiW agent below Scarecrow. He didn’t even have it in him to glare up at Danny like he had before. Instead he laid limply on the ground, tremors rolling through his body uncontrollably.
“We’ve exhausted every other option and you know it,” Scarecrow said, his voice low, “this is the only way we can move forward.”
“Still, I—I don’t,” Danny swallowed, his throat tight, “this isn’t—this isn’t right. Isn’t there some other way to do this? Like—a truth serum, or something?”
“Truth serums are notoriously unreliable. They’re almost as bad as lie detectors. We’re much more likely to get a reliable result from this.”
Danny just stared at the GiW agent and his splintered, ruined arm. He began to weakly wriggle in Scarecrow’s grasp, which was graciously ignored.
He vaguely remembered himself doing the same thing when he was on the operating table; even if he knew there was no chance of escape, he still thrashed and screamed, desperate to get away. The jagged I-shaped incision on his torso felt uncomfortably warm.
What was there left to say?
“The Bat does the same thing at times, you know,” Scarecrow said, “him and the rest of his brood. By using my toxin, I’m actually lessening the amount of permanent damage that I’m doing. Physically.”
“Still, that doesn’t make it right,” Danny said desperately. “Even if—even if everyone in the world did this, it wouldn’t make it right.”
Scarecrow hummed.
They were both silent for a moment.
His next words were gentle, absurdly so when compared to the scene in front of him.
“I would love an alternative. But…”
He shrugged, hand coming to rest on the break in the GiW agent’s arm. Even without applying any pressure, the man stopped squirming immediately.
“There aren’t any other options,” Danny repeated, his voice flat and his body numb.
“Yes,” Scarecrow said. “I’m sorry.”
There was a pause. No one moved a muscle. Eventually Scarecrow spoke again, his voice strangely empty.
“You can stand outside and keep watch, if you’d like. At such a short distance their radars won’t pick us up.”
Danny said nothing, leaving the room silently.
He sat outside for quite a while.
He was grateful that Scarecrow had, with his help, dragged the agent to one of his previous hideouts. It was soundproofed, after all.
He was glad that he didn’t have to hear the rest of what Scarecrow did to the man.
After what felt like an eternity, Dr. Crane left the building, joining him outside. He guided Danny back to his beat up old truck and they drove home in silence.
“Did you at least…do you know where they are, now?” Danny asked as they entered the apartment, his voice small.
“They didn’t share the details of all of their locations with any one person. I know where one of their locations are, but not their main base of operations.”
Danny felt disgusted. With himself, with Dr. Crane, with the GiW.
He was disgusted by the agent, too. Did he just hate the restless dead so much that he would prefer to be tortured than to give them the upper hand? Did he really think he was in the right?
Was there a chance that he was?
Danny felt very, very small, and very stupid. Stupid and weak and cowardly.
“Danny,” Dr. Crane spoke, his voice soft.
“I’m truly sorry that this is happening to you. I really, truly wish that you didn’t have to endure my company. I…”
He fell quiet. Danny wondered if he was just saying this to pacify him, or if he truly meant it. He wondered if it really mattered in the end.
After a few moments of silence, Dr. Crane sighed, looking truly pained.
“I don’t know. I’m sorry.”
Danny was quiet.
“I’m going to bed early,” he finally said, turning away and leaving without a second glance.

Safety Things I've learned from living in my country/state
If an aggressive dog approached but it doesn't yet seem like it's going to bite, don't run or fight back, back away slowly half facing the dog but don't make eye contact
If it echoes its not a gunshot
If you see articles of clothing strewn about in freezing temperatures, investigate, someone could be experiencing a phenomena from hypothermia nearby
Swans are very very very mean
Don't drink from any river or lake unless specifically told the water is safe, this applies to swimming in it as well
If the sky is yellow get ready for a wild storm or potential tornado
Keep track of the span between tornadoes and ask yourself if it's about time for another
Keep track of weather in all other states, its always a head up for future storms, weather shifts and more
Dont walk towards someone who is tweaking or having a mental break, potentially call the police if it's bad enough
Don't stop for cones on the highway if the person isn't a form of law enforcement or construction, it is likely a robber, kidnapper, or worse
Get something to check your drinks while going out
If bitten by a feral animal go get a rabies shot and go to the hospital
Disinfect after touching stray cats and dogs, but especially cats
If you live in a trailer in tornado country...what are you doing?! Move?! Get out of there do you not see the tornado-
Turn on your lights for delivery drivers, they are not obligated to enter the darkness to serve your food
Always have a way to get outside or have someone who can defrost the house in case the doors or windows freeze shut
If it's going to get cold over night already turn the heat on so pipes don't freeze
Dont use the oven as a heat source from the cold, it is dangerous, you are letting dangerous gas into the house
Ask for the itemized bill in the hospital

Tips For Surviving An Abusive Situation (or a very strict household)
Just a reminder: If you are in a physically or emotionally abusive situation CALL THE POLICE, AN ABUSE HOTLINE, FRIENDS, FAMILY, A COUNSELLER, ANYBODY, IMMEDIATELY. ABUSE CAN ESCALATE VERY QUICK.
Plain, whole-wheat noodles are super easy and quick to prepare in a microwave, a lot healthier than canned ravioli, and you can top them with cheese, tomato sauce, butter and pepper, it never gets old. Also, use a wooden or plastic spoon to eat. It's quieter.
Also, rice. Add-ins include soy sauce, scrambled eggs, peas and carrots, beef, etc.
Keep an old rucksack/backpack under your bed containing a change of clothes, loose change (see below), a knife for protection, granola bars/candy/bear paws, personal documents and a map. If you ever need to "Bug out", just grab the backpack and get as fast as you can to a friend's house, police station or even just a resturaunt if you just need to call someone.
Keep an envelope, whenever you find some loose change, put it in your envelope. Label it "Laundry tokens". Hide it well.
Keep a journal. Not only does this help keep you sane, you need to document EVERYTHING that your abuser does to you. Abusers (or strict parents) have a way of making you think like that never happened, or that you're crazy.
Don't kill yourself. Why? because if you die, your abusers ducking win. Don't let them win, bud.
If your parents are not dangerous, just extremely narcissistic and manipulative, go to a community college abroad. I would choose Wyoming or California because they're cheaper to live in. I'll make another post about college tips soon.
Get a dog or cat if you can afford it, and love it like hell. It will keep you warm and happy and loved, and most will defend you from being beaten. Just make sure they don't get hurt!
Once again, if you are being physically hurt or driven to the point of suicide or self-harm, contact ANYONE, IMMEDIATELY!
