I knew it was going to be like this but I am so disheartened seeing so many people cheering for the NHL getting rid of Pride Night and banning players from using Pride tape because “keep politics out of sports!”

it’s blatantly clear that the IL gov in no way cares about their own citizens and certainly less Jews as a whole but the total proportion of my generation of young Jews in the entire world literally being suited up for cannon fodder right now makes me ill. As much as both antisemites and the government of IL want to cast themselves as a global superpower and the strongest army on earth they are not, they’re still a relatively very small middle eastern country that’s part of a very very small ethnic group and going to war right now has a mass potential to seriously cut into our total population in ways that will impact us for a long long time. They are not the US. Proportionally this cannot be like the Vietnam war or the Iraq war. Like I’ve grown up with the Charedim being given a blank slate cause Jewish babies all my life and now we’re willing to throw a mass number of 18-40 year old Jews into the fire before they ever have a chance to become parents and there’s really nothing less in the interest of l’dor v’dor. As a diaspora Jew with a community in many ways more tied to IL than the US I’ve gotten the full guilt trip about not having to go get drafted in this war and I don’t support it in any way, but there’s still that deep feeling of maybe my future wife will die in this war. Maybe my future best friend or chavrusa will die in this war. Maybe the future father of my children will die in this war and I’ll never have my children. If we keep walking on to hell this may echo down the generations.

If anyone is wondering what the United States Navy listens to on deployment, I will tell you. It is mostly @taylorswift. There’s a little bit of Disney music and some country songs, but it’s mostly Taylor Swift.

Now picture this: the scariest man you know, big and mean and scary, screaming and crying and singing Marjorie into a mop handle. Now picture 20 or so young men choreographing a dance routine to Style. In their uniforms. Now picture a guys vs. gals dance-off to I Forgot That You Existed.

My chief would yell at anyone who tried to play a non-Taylor’s version of any of her songs. We would argue about the best Taylor ballads during watch and had album release parties the day after folklore and evermore dropped. You have not lived until you have dissected Taylor Swift song lyrics with four grown men in dress blues while an officer tries to redirect us. Nothing will ever compare to my SLPO sending us home early because he found out she was releasing folklore and he needed to “emotionally prepare” himself (he bought three bottles of wine).

I know everyone assumes we talked about sports or whatever but you can’t really keep up with those in the middle of the ocean, so we spent a lot of time listening to music because there are only so many stories a person can tell. Unless you’re Taylor Swift, then there’s a never ending supply.

One of my buddies just got back from deployment and she’s a submariner so they really really don’t get any news from outside the boat and she sent me a multitude of snaps of her reacting to midnights and the eras tour. There was a lot of screaming and crying and curses. I have never been happier to be out of the military than I was when I realized she has to catch up on the last six months of Taylor lore and Easter eggs.

One final thought, if you're looking at Ukraine and you're saying "yeah, I feel bad for them, but I'm more worried about China", well... I do agree with you that the idea of China attacking Taiwan is horrific and real thing to be concerned about given the rhetoric China uses around Taiwan

However, all I have to say is that how we handle Ukraine will likely strongly factor in to China's thinking around anything to do with Taiwan

I argue to you that the stronger our support for Ukraine is, the more painful this ends up being for russia so long as they refuse to withdraw; that the stronger the deterrence to China to engage in something that's really similar to what russia's doing in Ukraine

A Ukrainian victory supports a more stable world

#i live in a military town #most people i know are either in the military or have family in the military #there are multiple military bases nearby #i am a five minute walk from military housing #and i gotta say #90% of the veterans i know have this above attitude #this is something that's always been weird to me #growing up on tv all i ever saw were veterans talking about how much the war traumatized them #and that's fair #i'm sure it was for a lot of people #but it was always a little confusing to me #because again most people i know who went overseas speak very fondly of their time there #a lot of them miss it and most conversations about it are them longing to go back #just an interesting disconnect i've always noticed #again to reiterate i know what is fucked and that some people are real fucked up by it #and i fully support helping them #i wish our gov did more to support them #but most veterans i know aren't like that is all i'm saying #honestly based on most conversations it seems like #most of the trauma came from having to deal with inept military leadership/bureaucracy #lmao that last part is a half-joke
