Taking a closer look at the new character designs, I made an interesting discovery. The colors of half the new designs are based on the 1980s series.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’ve said elsewhere that Mana is so similar to Yumeko that she may have originally been Yumeko early in development. Well, this definitely gives credence to that theory!
Tumblr media
Even the new Neko Musume gets her colors from the 90s series
Tumblr media
This throw back to an older version of Kitaro is a bit of a wrench in my theory that this new series will be going in a new darker direction though. But then again most of the characters here have had the fewest changes except in terms of color. (like seriously, would anyone notice if Nezumi Otoko had six whiskers instead of eight?) Perhaps the director or character designer was just really fond of the 80s Kitaro. Or maybe it’s a subtle nod to how long these characters have been around. It is the 50th anniversary after all.

Gegege no Kitaro fan art that I made in Adobe Sketch on my iPad Pro. I'm really loving doodling on it. I've been in a creative funk for a while and having a new toy to play with has helped get me out of it.
If you’re wondering why all the Neko Musume’s in the fourth picture are cleaned up except for the three on the right it’s because I just didn’t care anymore. I just wanted to make this post and more on but I felt I needed a compare and contrast of Neko’s normal and monster face. Then I over did it by experimenting with different expressions. I just wanted to see how well I could make those stubby little bodies emote.
I also played around with my own color scheme for Sunakake Baba. Interestingly, with the exception of the first series, Baba’s design doesn’t vary that much from adaption to adaption with the except of her colors.

Sunakake-baba is a yōkai from Japanese mythology who appears as a hag. Her name translates as "sand throwing hag," and indeed, she is known for throwing sand in the faces of those who walk through the forests she inhabits.
Sunakake-baba is not necessarily evil, and never intends to cause any lasting harm to her victims. She will laugh at their distress and temporary blindness, however.

This is Mio. He's an Onmyoji, a human that has powers like a yokai. His mom is a Sunakake Baba, a witch who uses sand (he calls his mom a Sandwitch). And his dad is a human. He transferred to Aphen and Scaers school at some point because when he went to human school, other kids knew what his mom was and was afraid he'd do something to them (even though his mom wouldn't hurt a thing). @mecccchi

👀 mystery considering kitsune are a type of tokay does this mean you can too see other Tokyo not perceivable to human eyes?
Send my muse “👀 + a question” and they’ll have to answer with 100% honesty.
“I’m assuming you mean ‘yokai’?” Mystery twitched an ear. “Yes, I can. Sunakake-Baba, shikigami, Betobeto-San...they may be able to hide their presence from your average human,” The kitsune drew himself up a little bit higher. “But they cannot hide their presence from me.”

Who is the Weakest and who is the most Powerful?
Here are all my common (so not unique or boss monsters) monsters collected in groups, but the catch this time is that they are collected from weakest (of each group) to strongest/most dangerous of each group.
So for example in the human group the Buckrider is the weakest member, the Raktabija is the most dangerous and powerful. It is very messy and many monsters probably must be switched around, but it is VERY hard to come up with just the right order of least powerful -> most powerful! The strongest and weakest are mostly correct, I made sure of that!

I want to hear people’s thoughts on the new Gegege no Kitaro redesigns! Is there anything that particularly stands out as a good thing or bad thing? Do you like the new look or would you have preferred they stick closer to Mizuki’s style?
While we’re at it, what do you think about the new human character, Mana Inuyama? What do you think about her design? Any thoughts or concerns about adding a new character to the cast? What do you think the series will do with her?

Yokai Run Wild at Universal Studios Japan GeGeGe no Kitaro Attraction
Tumblr media
It's time to get spooky, because Universal Studios Japan is teaming up with Mizuki Production in a collaboration that celebrates the 100th anniversary of manga author Shigeru Mizuki's birth and the 20th anniversary of USJ with a yokai-themed Halloween attraction featuring characters from GeGeGe no Kitaro.
youtube
The attraction is entitled "GeGeGe no Kitaro the Real ~Accursed Ghost Town~", and it is a horror maze attraction that includes characters from Mizuki's manga and TV anime such as Kitaro, Medama-oyaji, Nezumi Otoko, and Sunakake Baba as well as 30 types of threatening yokai such as nyurarihon, shunobon, noppera-bo, ao nyōbō, and nuribotoke.
Additionally, the "NO LIMIT! Market" at Universal Studios Japan will offer a menu of GeGeGe no Kitaro-themed food and beverages, and the official Universal Studios Japan Twitter feed (@USJ_Official) will release Kitaro-themed ghost stories beginning at 21:00 (9:00pm JST) on September 08, 2021.
Tumblr media
"GeGeGe no Kitaro the Real ~Accursed Ghost Town~" runs from September 11 - November 07, 2021 at Stage 18 in Universal Studios Japan in Osaka. Admittance to the attraction requires either a "Halloween Express Pass" or a free numbered ticket that can be obtained through the official USJ app or via the ticket office after entering the park.
