Top 10 Cozy BLs!

Our Dating Sim made me realize we have a new sub genre of BLs happening right now: the cozy BL.

I decided to invent/identify/name this new BL category because... I can. I crowd sourced (here in the hellhole) opinions of how to define it and what should go on it. The collective brainstormed and elected the following qualifications:

low angst

low stakes

high domesticity

a central relationship that is more cute than anything else

extra points for found family

AKA BLs that make you feel happy and comfortable.

These BLs leave you feeling warm and safe, like a hot water bottle. I will list them in order of my personal preference when in the mood for “cozy.”

1. Our Dating Sim

(Korea, Viki)

Did I create this list for this show? Yes I did. It defines this category. It is a very low stakes, high domesticity, extremely warm and gentle second chance at love office romance.

This is a fuzzy blanket of a story that perfectly suited KBL’s short-length tendencies. The pacing is... muuuuuah... chef’s kiss.

2. Seven Days

(Japan, grey in 2 parts Seven Days: Monday - Thursday | Seven Days - Friday - Sunday)

Popular first year Seiryo has a policy of going out with any girl who asks… for one week. On a lark, third year Yuzuru tests to see if that policy also applies to boys. Seiryo agrees that it does. Along the way they accidentally fall in love. Possibly my favorite BL of all time. It’s very gentle with us and its characters while still having that Japanese emo edge to it.

A master class in quite yet riveting cinema.

What, you doubted me? OF COURSE it’s on the list

3. My School President

(Thailand, YouTube)

GMMTV gave us a classic high school set Thai BL with tropes like messy boys singing their feelings that made this one Love Sick for the modern age with all the gentle sweetness and pining ache, but none of the dated damaging tropes or issues. Yes, we’ve seen it all before, but I still ADORED this, and that’s partly what makes it so comforting. Who let my BL be this wholesome and funny?

4. See You After Quarantine?

(Taiwan, Viki)

Be you never expected lockdown to be comforting? This under appreciated gem is Taiwan’s answer to Gameboys and is just as charming and adorable yet still as quintessentially Taiwanese as one might hope. It features a Japanese love interest and the cutest most confused disaster gay. Slow burn because the two have almost no actual screen time together and yet manage some truly amazing chemistry plus sweetly caring and earnest. Honestly how does Taiwan do it?

5. Ingredients

(Thailand, YouTube)

At the time (during lockdown) many of us referred to this as our “emotional support grocery store advertisement.” If all you want is two soft boys being domestic, cooking together, cuddling on the couch, cat sitting, and babysitting - just put this on and be comfy.

6. What Did You Eat Yesterday?

(Japan, grey)

Basically the grown up version of Ingredients. Emotionally repressed, grumpy, salary man shows his hair dresser husband his love by cooking amazing meals. That’s it, that’s the whole show. There some queer fam drama, and blood-fam coming out drama, but mostly is husbands cooking and eating together and it’s great. Is it BL? Not really. Do we care? Not really.

7. The New Employee

(Korea, Viki)

This one is queer comfort, explicitly. If you aren’t queer you might not find it as warm and engaging. A near pitch perfect office BL with conflict derived from that setting. Also featuring found family and a lesbian bestie. Sweet & innocent (and out) Seung Hyun scores the office internship of his dreams. On his first day at work he gets into it with his cool reserved (and also v gay) boss.

As you do.

But things get romantic pretty darn quickly.

As you gay.

8. En of Love: Tossera & Future the series

Tossera = Younger boy wants to court older boy and does and… that’s it. No really that’s the WHOLE STORY. There is actually no angst, drama, or, indeed plot. But are they the softest bois ever to BL as a main couple? Yes, yes they are.

Future is... exactly the same thing.

Are we mad about it?

Nope.

9. Oxygen

(Thailand, YouTube)

Softest seme in the universe sings his affection to the older boy at the cafe. Let the slow burn courting commence. Oxygen uses every BL trope in the playbook for one of the gentlest lowest angst BLs ever made. It’s a hyung romance (younger boy courts older boy) but very very earnest about it. Am I biased? Sure. This is probably one of my biggest comfort watches.

10. Our Dining Table

(Japan, Gaga)

Lonely salaryman and talented cook gets accidentally adopted by a college kid and his little brother. It’s a quiet cozy little parable of found family alleviating loneliness. Possibly too slow for some but definitely high up there for me with the best of what Japan can do (like Restart After Come Back Home), it’s only flaw (if I dare say such a thing) is that it is not really “romantic.” Lovely & sweet but the romance beats are being used to build a family relationship, not just couple intimacy, it’s OK with me, but not totally BL.

For me one of the hallmarks of cozy BL is that as a chronic rewatcher I find myself starting to rewatch these ones even as they are still airing. Oxygen was an icon of this (also my first watch-along and the reason I realized I really had a passion for BL)

Boys Lockdown (YouTube) - actually on this list because it go so many votes by everyone else, I haven’t watched it.

My Ride (GaGa) - Thai BL grew up with this pulp - a truly lovely and special little show featuring the extremely rare pairing of sunshine/sunshine AKA a cinnamon roll couple. Mature explorations of relationships using one of the softest, sweetest and most innocent friends to lovers vehicles. Kindly, overworked doctor meets broken-hearted motorcycle taxi driver in an “other side of the tracks” slow burn romance. The support cast is excellent, making for great friendship groups and family dynamics. With honest queer rep that adds to, but doesn’t impede the story, and genuine conversation about the nature of class, wealth, and classism, not to mention communication, honesty, and respect for boundaries, you can’t go wrong with this show. In other news, I am a sucker for a single dimple. Full review.

Cherry Magic (Japan, indie subbed) AKA Doutei dato Mahoutsukai ni narerurashii - the sweetest, fluffiest, most charming bit of adorable ever, full of found family and pastry and serious slapstick, the characters are utter spazzes, but so cute about it. Still that aspect makes me a little tense so I don’t find it as cozy as others do.

Destiny Seeker (grey) - see 2 Moons Ambassador

DNA Says Love You (Gaga) - particularly the last few episodes.

La Cuisine (GaGa) - sweet and kind of pure show, and like Thai desserts perhaps requires too much patience for a layperson. Because of the pacing and the focus on the bad girl character, I did dock it. But if you like stuff in the Oxygen vein, then this show is for you, and far better than most Thai BL pulps. That said, I suspect that I enjoyed it more than many would. Full review.

Plus when they were together, they were ridiculously soft. But it also had a realistic portrayal of university life, bisexual awakening, and friendship groups. Ending is okay but a victim of lockdown.

onmyoji related media you can watch (that has english subs)

Behold, my Onmyoji film/TV collection for curious people who've already seen the anime!

The Yin-Yang Master (2001) and it's 2003 sequel The real OGs, the one most people know from Yuzuru Hanyu's SEIMEI free skate routine. Featuring Nomura Mansai as Seimei and Hideaki Itou as Hiromasa, these movies were my introduction to the Onmyoji series as a whole. The soundtrack is a banger, the practical effects are great and you get to see Hiroyuki Sanada ham it up in the first movie! I would say that the first movie is a lot stronger, but the second movie makes up for it by being A Lot Gayer. It even has an English dub! It's easily found on Certain streaming websites or on DVD.

晴雅集 - Qing Ya Ji, aka The Yin-Yang Master: Dream of Eternity A Chinese adaptation that REALLY puts its own spin on things; Qingming and Boya are Seimei and Hiromasa respectively, but it's not easy to tell if you aren't already aware of the source material! It's a different take that I love regardless, with beautiful visuals, incredible costuming and impressive sets. It also made me cry like a baby at one point, which is always a plus. It's on Netflix and it also has an English dub.

Onmyoji - Takiyashahime (2020) A TV Asahi drama special that adapts the two-part Takiyashahime novels. It's not 1-1 of course, but it does follow the main plot points well enough (it also adapts Tsuyuko's story as a bonus!) It's got that "yeah this was done on a TV drama budget and not a movie one" look when it comes to the effects, but that doesn't stop it from being enjoyable. You really get a glimpse at novel Seimei and Hiromasa's dynamic in this (they include one of my favourite hirosei exchanges in this and it's SO GOOD) as well as proper Nasty Old Man Ashiya Doman!!! You can watch it on Certain streaming sites.

There also exists a 2015 TV Asahi drama series, but I haven't been able to find it. An earlier 2001 NHK drama series exists as well, but it isn't subbed in English. It is, at the very least, entirely on YouTube! 10 episodes, 45 minutes each. It's a little...weird, I won't lie (they try to make Hiromasa and Mitsumushi a thing which is. Why) but some of the stories are genuinely heartwrenching, which was a surprise to me when I watched it!

I tried to format this as a headcanon but this turned out too rambly so I guess this is just a ramble now.

He’d certainly be flustered, but I feel like he’d be too shy to do anything drastic with the information, even in the heat of the moment. I mean, where would he even begin? It’s an indication you’re attracted to him, so perhaps he’d start from the beginning of the courting process, just tucking away the fact you already masturbate to him away in his head. In a way, Yuzuru feels proud that someone he adores thinks of him in such a debauched way, but at the same time, someone he adores thinks of him in that way.

As for finding out, that depends on your exact relationship. If he’s your butler, he’ll notice stains on your bedsheets, and an increase of soiled towels you toss in the laundry, all with an odd smell. Rather easy to connect the dots. If he’s simply a “friend”, maybe when he was on his way to check on you, he overheard you moaning his name, mistook it as a call for him, and witnessed the sight of your hands playing with your genitals while you moaned his name over and over. Certainly, he’d pop a boner, but he’s got too much self restraint to throw himself onto you at that moment. He’d excuse himself to deal with his little problem, but if you’re fast you could order him to stay, to finish the job with his hands, since if you ask him to fuck you to please himself too, he’ll deny it and try to leave in a hurry.

Hmmmhmm...perhaps how many kids the cast wants? In the near future, if they want to settle down or not interested in the idea of having kids (and/or owning pets and calling them their "children" instead)

Maybe a personal list of how you see characters either being dom, switches, subs, or leaning? You write for them being on both ends but I'm interested in seeing how you think!

Or maybe what kind of skimpy outfits they would wear? Lingerie, revealing outfits, etc etc

Ok these are a lot of good options but i'm going with the first one for simplicity

Nazuna + Madara are some of the biggest breeding kink lovers here and like children. Mika is just utterly obsessed with his partner and want's as many little thems as possible.

Chiaki, Kuro, and Mao like kids a lot but they also knows their limits, they might be a bit frazzled with more than 3. Rinne probably just wanted 2 but then was like hey i like this and asked for a third. Anzu was similar but was just like "only one" and then "ok fine two" but then "why not three" and tbh could probably go even higher.

1-2 is the biggest category. I think for Leo & Rei it's about having grown up with a sibling they were close to. I think Rei would be willing to have only one but for Leo its 2 or none because he doesn't want to doom his child to a siblingless life. Kaoru, Adonis, and Hiyori all also have siblings but it's not quite the same relationship. Kaoru probably starts on only 1 but then decides for more afterwards and absolutely adores them, but refuses more so he can focus on the 2 he has. Adonis has multiple siblings and knows the ins and outs of sibling life well and he doesn't want to subject his child(ren) to too much. Hiyori wants 2 so he can dress them up and keep them close to him easily.

Izumi falls head over heels for his first child and immediately wants a second. Arashi wants and likes kids but does not want to overload herself so 2 is her maximum. Souma thinks 2 is the perfect amount to be able to properly raise into good, even adults. Tatsumi believes in moderation and wants to have less so he can be closer to the ones he has. Yuzuru would probably opt for 1 by default, but is willing to go for two. He doesn't want too much on his plate as he will already be busy with his job and he absolutely does not want to leave the brunt of parenthood to his partner.

Natsume is a bit sentimental about wanting to pass on his magic to the next generation. He might already be training people but he wants his blood to go on too. Ibara and Eichi both want heirs. Eichi would like more than 1, but he's hesitant to do so due to his health. Ibara would like to not be a shitty parent and he thinks that with 1 kid, it would be literally impossible for him to make them feel neglected no matter how busy he is. Ritsu wants 1 kid for similar reasons to Eichi, but also because he flat out does not want to put in the effort for more than 1.

Hokuto is in here out of SPITE he is NOT passing down the Hidaka name. HiMERU's job is just too sketchy and he's not leaving it anytime soon. Koga does not have the patience (or maybe he does, but he still doesn't want children of his own), he wants to focus on other things. You can have dogs instead? Children are too messy and too much work for Shu.

No Opinion/Up to partner category is self explanatory. All characters who are chill with the idea of having or not having kids.

Hey Error if I wanna do a Yuzuru speed run which stories would you recommend?

Flower Fes and School trip for his early Yumenosaki stages. Flower Fes particularly.

In Military and Keito lecture you can see him acting away from fine, especially Tori, and how generally careful he is. I really recommend these.

Gang shows Ibara's and Yuzuru's relationship during the military days, also him being away from Tori/fine. Ibara's sub-story "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" also has a lot for them. Def recommend that. Then I'm also pretty sure that final SS is crucial for YuzuIba's relationship but I haven't had the chance to read that yet.

I'd also recommend Summer Vacation, I just really enjoyed it, and seeing him do stuff with Undead is really nice imo.

Wow, this is definitely the best piece that we have watched thus far, I somehow had almost no idea what the plot was going into it so it was a really lovely blind experience.

Shoko is treated worse than pretty much any other anime character I've seen. Girl did nothing wrong, yet people still hated her because she was different. People went out of their way to bully her relentlessly and she apologized to them. This led to lifelong self-hatred that can't be easily rectified.

Ishida has the same amount of self-hatred and yet no one around him seems to share in this hatred. Ishida has a lot of self-loathing, he seems to be convinced that the world is against him and chooses to be alone when he can. Despite this, people still reach out to him and want to be his friend, even at his worst moment he has plenty of people supporting him. Ishida is a bully, and I do believe a big part of the reason he made amends was out of guilt (I think he grew, but that doesn't dismiss his initial motivations.)

I think this shows how two people can be feeling the same exact thing about themselves but have lived two totally different lives. Both Ishida and Shoko attempted to take their own lives, and yet their sadness comes from totally different sources.

I loved the ending scene when all of the X's came down and Ishida truly saw the people around him for the first time. These people that have been in his life for years but he has isolated himself from. He is finally opening himself up to the idea of friendship. Thankfully other people realized their mistakes in their treatment of Shoko and are being better friends to them both. (However, if I was Shoko I wouldn't want to be friends with any of them because I hold grudges).

I also loved Yuzuru as she is kinda a subversion of the sibling trope, usually, it is the older sibling that is looking out for the younger one and dedicating a chunk of their lives to protecting them. Yuzuru on the other hand is a good bit younger than Shoko but places a lot of responsibility for her well-being on her shoulders, despite her being a child who can not really change the cruel behaviors of those older than her.

This was a really magnificent movie and I'm glad that this class actually got me to sit down and watch it.

10 Soft BL's to Binge In A Day

(Since I don't sleep and watch high speed I binge full length Thai BL but I'm assuming you want something shorter than that, so I've limited myself to a 5hr runtime.)

1. Semantic Error (Korea Viki) - Sexy older boy discovers pouty younger boy has outed him as a slacker, starts out bullying him, accidentally falls madly in love. Korea hits it entirely out of the Parks by doing a university BL with everything we expect from BL just done exactly right. Korea's signature quality executed perfectly with added bonus good story, great pacing, stunning visuals, and fantastic chemistry. You cannot ask for more from a BL, let alone a KBL. Full review.

2. Seven Days (Japan grey in 2 parts Seven Days: Monday - Thursday, Seven Days: Friday - Sunday) - one of the best live action yaoi mangas ever made. The leads have excellent chemistry although it’s low heat, there’s still more kisses than Cherry Magic. Popular first year Seiryo has a policy of going out with any girl who asks… for one week. On a lark, third year Yuzuru tests to see if that policy also applies to boys. Seiryo agrees that it does. Along the way they accidentally fall in love. All the angst is just teen confusion.

3. Our Dating Sim (Korea Viki) - I enjoyed every aspect from the casting to the very simple premise to the quietly smooth execution. Sure it’s very low stakes, but that makes it high domesticity and extremely warm and gentle. This is a fuzzy blanket of a story. Do we call this cozy BL? Why not? This one is going to live in my rewatch pile, I can tell already, and you know what’s best about it? Every single episode is in that pile. There’s no skipping with this one, it might be good natured and calmly sweet but it’s tight and the pacing is excellent. It perfectly suited KBL’s short-length tendencies. Full review.

4. Light On Me (Korea Viki - Korea does an elegant pastiche of traditional live action yaoi but all tropes are cleverly deployed to bolster one of the most riveting love triangles ever put on screen… and I don’t like love triangles. LoM strategically tailors classic BL tropes to 2 different semes resulting in pristine pacing, plot, and character development, explicitly serving narrative (not just to tick boxes). LoM is a master class in this trope drops. (If you write fanfic or romance you should study this show.) Full review.

5. Takara-kun and Amagi-kun (Japan Gaga & Viki) - I gnawed on my knuckles and squealed a lot with this show. Reserved cool kid who must learn to communicate to keep the tiny disaster nugget he’s madly in love with. It is beyond charming: soft and gentle, packed with cuteness and high school angst, thirst, & yearning. Was there plot? Not really. Was it emotionally tense and paced well enough for me not to notice? Absolutely. Did I enjoy the hell out of it? Oh yes. Full review.

6. HIStory 2: Crossing the Line (Taiwan Viki) - super low stakes sweetest story of the bad boy who falls hard for the senior on the volleyball team and then works to earn his love. You know it’s Taiwan so the kisses are great but in this case it also ends well. Only trigger is that the side couple is the stepbrothers trope, and some don’t like that.

7. Cherry Magic (Japan indie subbed) AKA Doutei dato Mahoutsukai ni narerurashii - the sweetest, fluffiest, most charming bit of adorable ever, full of found family and pastry and serious slapstick, the characters are utterly bonkers, but cute about it.

8. Wish You (Korea Netflix or Viki, you want the movie version) AKA WISH YOU: Your Melody in My Heart - low stakes high pining romance about a pianist who falls in love with a busker who is on his way to being the next big idol.

9. Restart After Come Back Home (Japan indie subbed or Gaga?) - this one is perfect if you just want a beautiful loving movie, and one that is well filmed and complex enough to appeal to those who don’t normally watch BL or romance (if you have a reluctant partner).

10. You Are Ma Boy (Vietnam YouTube) - is there angst? Nope even what could have been angst (a gay idol) doesn’t materialize, it’s just cuties in a cafe confusing each other with cat & mouse games. The side het couple is a touch disturbing, tho.

Also Old Fashioned Cupcake, it's a bit more complicated than soft but a FANTASTIC binge watch.
