Blog Post 3 - A Mental Health Crisis
A mental Health Crisis is amongst us. This is something I truly believe and statistics are supporting this.  A recent international meta-analysis of 54 studies reported that the combined prevalence of suicidal ideation during the first year of the pandemic was 10.8%, which was higher than the pre-pandemic global estimates of approximately 2% to 5%.
To me these numbers are significant.
Why are mood disorders and rates of suicidal ideation increasing so much ? What is to blame. Many have pointed the finger at social media. Exclaiming that social media has held hands and rose consistently in the same time period as mental health problems.  Another theory is that social media incline is also reducing face to face conversations and a sense of friendship and wellbeing that makes a person whole.  I don’t disagree, I think all these things are huge factors with the increase in mental health problems and disorders.  Cyber bullying is also a factor, and I think another huge factor is depression that can come with unrealistic comparison to “influencers”.  People see these perfect lives on social media and so easily compare their imperfect lives, thinking they are doing something wrong or they just don’t have what it takes. When realistically these perfect lives don’t exist. People are only showing their highlight reel. Perhaps the problem is not the influencers or social media, perhaps the problem is personal self esteem. It seems that self esteem is dwindling these days and I have a theory. *Cue Kurtis eye roll*. We live in a soft culture, a culture that has such amazing qualities as improved inclusivity and acceptance which is absolutely wonderful, but also a culture that doesn’t necessarily prepare us for real life failures.
I see it in my kids activities and my older nieces and nephews sports, and extracurricular events: there are no winners and no losers. Having neither can be absolutely devastating to a child’s self-esteem.  If you are never given the opportunity to win or be praised for winning, you don’t know how skilled you can really be or you may not be as motivated to try your best in the future. If you are not given the opportunity to fail or lose you may not understand or develop the mental strength needed to deal with your negative emotions, and turn them into motivation to be better next time. Mental toughness is a very important skill.
Here is an article that talks to this way of thinking. https://www.queensjournal.ca/story/2018-09-10/opinions/participation-trophies-are-creating-a-weaker-generation/#:~:text=The%20issue%20with%20participation%20trophies,of%20failure%20and%20decreased%20motivation.
Yes I am competitive and competition and sport have taught me many lessons that I carry throughout life daily. I am thankful to have had the opportunity to succeed but more importantly also fail.
Now why is this relevant to our class?
*Quality education and skilled professionals* We see this brain drain in other countries and perhaps it is a bit premature but could a mental health crisis eventually lead to our own brain drain here in North America?
Mental health problems can affect many areas of an individuals and students’ life. Reducing their quality of life, academic achievement, physical health and general self-satisfaction. Poor mental health also has consequences for communities and larger society.
The community is negatively affected when students are unable to finish their degrees and contribute valuable skills in a competitive job market.
One study found that five percent of students do not finish their education due to psychiatric disorders and estimated that 4.29 million people would have graduated from college had they not been experiencing such disorders.5
By failing to address the mental health crisis in North America are we producing our own brain drain? Perhaps we are.
By addressing mental health we can easily help address, a *disparity that is currently happening in our country right now, we can help reduce *poverty and hunger as these two are closely related. Mental health is shown to be closely intertwined amongst the homeless. An estimated 25-50 % of homeless people are living with mental health.
Tumblr media
By creating more mental health awareness we can address the mental health stigma that many struggle with. It is very common in our culture in Alberta to have the perception that men shouldn't cry or men should just keep feelings to themselves. But this can be very dangerous and detrimental to mental health among men. Perhaps by addressing this further we can create a more equal space for the *male gender and identity, as they are so commonly shown to suffer in silence.

Characteristics and Motivations of Players with Disabilities in Digital Games
This is a study which focuses on how disabled video game players interact with games and with their communities. A questionnaire was sent out to disabled players registered with the AbleGamers Charity. The participants were asked about their disabilities, the games they played, and how they play. The results were that the players tended towards games that were popular with abled players at the time, such as Super Mario Odyssey, though many have necessitated the use of accessibility tools such as key remapping and subtitles, or even more specialised apparatus such as custom controllers and text to speech tools. The results also indicated a majority of the respondents played on PC. The respondents tended towards playing single player games, and to cooperative multiplayer games to a lesser extent. Almost all respondents said that they played games to enjoy themselves, with relaxation, challenge, and community being close behind as responses. The researchers discuss the above points, affirming that there may have been some sampling bias with regards to the types of games people prefer to play, as several multiplayer games were the most popular at the time of the study being performed. They also hypothesise several reasons for the other aspects, such as PCs being more ubiquitous in modern life, and how the respondents tended to prefer to play with their friends instead of strangers. They come to the conclusion that disabled players tend to have similar tastes and reasons to play as abled players, though they need accessibility tools more readily available.
One can criticise the study for using only 230 respondents as it is a small sample size, especially as they seem to generalise the results for the whole disabled community. Nevertheless, the study does pose further research questions, such as the intersectionality between physical and mental disability and gaming. How similar or different they are from each other, and how they intersect. Plus, research like this can break open new areas in accessibility development and making assistive technology more readily available in more games.

Career aspirations including goal setting
Setting goals is a great source of motivation and also gives you a great indication of the progress you have made and yet to make. Goal setting is something that is used in many organisations as it gives employees a sense of achievement and gratification once those goals are achieved (Lunenburg 2011), therefore setting goals can also be very rewarding. As mentioned previously the overarching and end goal in regard to my ‘uni-life’ is to secure a job in industry as soon as possible. But along the way I have set small goals and realised the hurdles I will need to jump in order to achieve them to reach my end goal. Whether it be part of the subject requirements or not a goal of mine for this semester was to vigorously job search and get my name out there as much as possible.
The first job I applied for seemed a great opportunity for me at local newspaper the Geelong Advertiser as a sports reporter. I felt well equipped to be able to secure this job, mostly through what I have been studying in the course. Although journalism is not top of my list when it comes to what I wish to secure as future employment, this opportunity suits my skills and interests well. It’s a credit to the multi-faceted approach that I have taken towards my studies that I felt confident enough to apply for the role. Putting the lessons and skills into practice from the transition class last semester felt rewarding also but also slightly daunting. Unfortunately, on this occasion I was not able to secure the role as they opted for a more experienced candidate. This is obviously something I am finding trouble with when it comes to applying for jobs at this early stage, experience is something that is essential in many job descriptions so that’s something I am going to need to work through.
Whilst it would be terrific to secure full time employment shortly after the completion of my studies and internship and this is definitely a goal of mine, I am also a realist about how likely this might be for me. So as I apply for jobs and think about my job aspirations, I am now considering many different possibilities including; jobs outside of the sports industry where my skills can be transferrable such as in marketing, events or communications. I would also consider casual or part time positions if it meant getting a foot in the door and gaining some experience which is obviously so valuable. Ideally, I would love to stay on at GESAC at this stage. So far I have loved working there and found real value in the work I do. Early on in my internship I thought it was going to be unlikely that I secure any sort of employment beyond my internship, mainly because of the nature of the employing process of the centre. Due to GESAC being council run, there are many different factors that go into validating a new position to create for a prospective staff member. Although now that I am nearing the end of my internship, my confidence levels in securing employment have increased tremendously to the point that my supervisors are submitting a bid and putting in a lot of effort to secure a position for me to stay on for paid work. Given where I thought the internship was going initially, I am extremely proud at how I have managed to get to a point where GESAC are keen to secure a spot for me.
