Fun Fact
BuzzFeed published a report claiming that Tumblr was utilized as a distribution channel for Russian agents to influence American voting habits during the 2016 presidential election in Feb 2018.
Tufts University Resident Assistants (RAs) authorized a strike earlier this week in response to Tufts’ failure to make any offer for compensation in the form of a stipend. RAs at Tufts are currently only compensated with housing- they need to live on campus to do their jobs- but no stipend or wages during the semester or the three weeks of unpaid training they must attend in early august before other students are on campus. They also do not receive a meal plan.
Tufts recently sent an email communication to university students about Union activity on campus, failing to mention their bad faith attempt at bargaining over the past six months, and ending with a threat against potential strikers.
This portion of the email reads, “We anticipate everyone involved will respect our community values and one another’s right to enjoy the new semester without disruption. While we support the units’ engagement with our campus, any actions or activities that create a hostile campus environment, endanger public safety, or violate our Student Code of Conduct will be addressed by the appropriate members of our staff.”
This is a clear threat of conduct proceedings and potential expulsion against student workers who have a legally protected right to strike without retaliation. OPEIU local 153 is filing an unfair labor practices suit against Tufts University as a result of this threat and others from Tufts lawyers in bargaining meetings.

Irina Stanescu is from Morgantown, West Virginia. Irina is a freshman architectural student with a keen eye for detail who is pursuing her bachelor’s degree. Irina spends her free time outside the lab swimming with our Notre Dame swim team. She is a natural at conservation work, in my opinion! Even though this is her first experience with conservation work, she executes each treatment flawlessly with minimal training. Irina began in the lab by stapling and sewing music scores into protective binders and constructing pockets for the score’s various instrument parts. She then learned customized book jacketing using our Colibri machine. This machine seals a clear polyethylene jacket onto the book to help protect the cover. She is currently re-backing books with damaged spines which you can see in the image above. Irina recently assisted in the construction of several "tuxedo" style boxes to preserve a large Asian collection.
First McDonald’s for lunch, then paying for laundry and eyeing that poster sure would look good above the bed. Suddenly, hundreds of dollars from high school graduation checks are gone, but what now? New College’s bustling campus is also a thriving ground for valuable employment opportunities. As the academic year kicks off, students at New College have the opportunity to embrace a diverse array…
By far, one of the most popular posts on this blog site is The Monk’s Retreat, which was published nearly nine years ago on August 17, 2014. The post tells the story of an encounter I had near the New York Public Library on Fifth Avenue with a Buddhist monk in saffron robes.
The monk was soliciting donations for a new temple and would not take no for an answer. Understand that I’m saying this as…
This entire thread is horrifying. I was so lucky that my ochem professor let me take the final the next day after I missed it (and in that case it was my own fault, read the time wrong and thought it was later than it actually was)
its crazy how coming into clinical social work, i really just thought I was up against systems and cycles of trauma....but it turns out i'm up against those two things AND other therapists. the amount of work spent correcting mistakes from other clinicians--whether with clients or during the classroom--is fucking crazy.
i totally get we're all on different journeys in terms of being clinicians. but it is insane finding out day after day of therapists and clinicians saying the worst things ever to clients. demeaning them, telling them "it's all in their head", the racism and the ableism and harm that is caused. like no fucking wonder people are afraid to seek therapy (on top of the accessibility issues). while i'm a little biased and think that at the very least clinical social work training focuses on viewing people within their environments (so not engaging in the medical/individualist models of practice that a lot of counseling programs focus on), that doesn't mean it gives every person the skills to be an effective therapist. i'm also not saying i'm the best clinician ever--I'm literally in training--but boy! it is jarring seeing how some of my peers interact in class and wondering...is that how you are with your clients??
my social work program at the very least also has a focus on anti-racism, but i know students from other programs and some of them don't even mention racism AT ALL and focus entirely on diagnosing people "correctly", or finding the perfect form of therapy to use on a client. but man, what none of these programs teach are basic life skills. wanting to be a clinician isn't enough, especially considering that an inhumane amount of people in my program are 1. so nervous about making mistakes that they lose scope of their practice 2. have so much internalized racism/white guilt to work thru 3. or they have absolutely no listening skills.
again, im not trying to make it seem like I am the number 1 clinician in the world ever. I don't even have a psych background or bachelor's in social work. my reasons for going into social work are quite selfish (I want a job that is very flexible, easily transferable, and can be done in different contexts), and the helping people part is just a plus. i'm just saying it's very jarring seeing other people in training and realizing they too are working with clients. i have conversation after conversation about these issues with other BIPOC/queer/marginalized clinicians, so I know i'm not the only person worried about some of the people that will be out of this program in a few years practicing on their own or with vulnerable populations.
the gender politics in persona five are so fucking real. ann is hesitant to do modeling full time because she’s victim blaming herself for what happened with kamoshida. ryuji obliviously mentions that ann is missing out on going for a communal bath, forgetting it’s not mixed bathing. yusuke and morgana both put her up on a pedestal-- yusuke seeing her as one of the muses of old, morgana seeing her as not just a love interest but as proof that he’s human, that he can be loved back by a human, and she’s just an object of his desire.
makoto and sae especially-- sae wants her sister to seek power specifically because she’s a woman, because she knows how hard it is to be respected as a woman in this world and wants makoto to have the best chance possible, even though it’s only making makoto miserable to try and play respectability politics in a game where no one gives a damn about her genuine desire to help people. and it raises the question-- how long can people take advantage of her altruism before she gives up on it, before it’s easier to just be bitter and uncaring like she pretends? the road to power is a long one. she’s already tired.
Macey Bartels is from Allentown, New Jersey. She is a second-year student majoring in Art History with minors in Middle Eastern and Russian studies. Macey came to us because she is passionate about studying art and is interested in pursuing conservation work for museums. This is her first year learning about preservation and the art of conservation. She brings to our lab her experience working as a museum assistant, her training in both classical and modern art forms, and her meticulous attention to detail. Macey began with learning end sheet preparation for case bindings and quickly progressed to making custom enclosures. She has become highly skilled at creating corrugated clamshell style boxes to preserve fragile books. Because of her significant interest in conservation, we have advanced Macey to text block preparation, and she is currently working on constructing new cases for severely damaged collections as seen in the image above.
hiii, im still struggling to learn to become a person who studies bc i was a lazy coaster for so long lol but some things that have helped me are: having a planner where i make a list of all the work i need to get done every day (having everything laid out + getting the satisfaction of ticking a box makes it easier and more rewarding imo), using the pomodoro technique or apps like forest to give myself set time periods in which to work where i try not to let myself do anything else, trying to work away from my house/room whenever possible (in the library is best for me but even just going downstairs to work instead of in my bedroom helps). if u manage to get organised for even just a week, for me the satisfaction that i felt from getting stuff done more than i ever have before makes you want to do it more... if it feels like a slog try and think about how good it feels when it is done rather than the bad feeling of doing it and know that you will reach it if you just keep going!
+ above my desk i have a post it note to remind me of this post which helped to change my mindset a lot lol
