Why I am deleting Goodreads and maybe you should, too
I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed reading a book where my enjoyment wasn’t tied to the euphoric sense of achievement I got from finishing it. This is not because I don’t love reading, or would rather watch television. No, it’s because of a little app on my phone called Goodreads.
Home to about 90 million readers worldwide, Goodreads is a website that lets users track their reading and broadcast their tastes to the world – or, in my case, a few friends and vague acquaintances. At its core, it’s a harmless concept: an online community for bookworms, and an opportunity to discover new books your friends have loved.
It’s also extremely satisfying. Since joining Goodreads a few years ago, the annual roundup I receive tallying up the books I have finished that year has become the clinching point of my reading experience. I get a buzz from increasing my reading goal every 12 months, and from comparing how many pages I’ve turned or hours of audiobooks I’ve listened to with other people’s numbers. I feel a sense of accomplishment every time I update my “progress” with a book.
But that’s exactly what’s wrong with Goodreads: it turns reading into an achievement. Quantifying, dissecting and broadcasting our most-loved hobbies sucks the joy out of them. I find myself glancing towards the corner of the page to see how much I’ve read. I compare the thickness of the read pages I hold in my left hand to the unread ones in my right. Even when absorbed in the climax of a story, one eye is always on my proximity to the end, when I’ll be able to post it all to Goodreads.
It’s not just our reading habits that have been gamified. From our runs on Strava to the films we’ve watched on Letterboxd, there’s now a popular app to quantify all our hobbies. But with reading come the associations of intelligence and work that are not granted to our habitual consumption of other art forms; if I documented the amount of television I watch, I would feel more embarrassed than triumphant. This is why tracking my reading activity on Goodreads is far more performative than I have previously admitted to myself: I love reading, but I also love the feeling of people thinking I’m well read.
While some people’s qualms with Goodreads are rooted in its clunky interface, or the fact that it is owned by Amazon, mine lie in its very concept. Reading is something I do to relax, learn and enjoy. It’s not just that I don’t need a pie chart detailing my reading habits, the chart has poisoned the whole experience. Even if I were to switch to another book app without the social aspect, I know that I would remain obsessed with finishing books over enjoying them.
It’s human nature to get a sense of satisfaction from seeing something through to the end. But, without Goodreads, it won’t matter if I give up on a book I’m not bothered about halfway through, because no one will know or care – as if they did anyway. I won’t be self-conscious if I read yet another thriller bought in a supermarket deal, instead of something others would consider as smarter or better.
If Goodreads provides a sense of community, good recommendations and doesn’t make you obsess over what you’re reading or how much, then great. Maybe it’s just a few of us who aren’t compatible with it, and end up developing a toxic relationship that distracts from the magic of getting lost in a book. But right now I am reading my first book Goodreads-free since I installed the app. It feels just like it did when I was a child, with no awareness of what others think about what I’m reading, how quickly I’m reading it, or what I haven’t read. From now on, my reading habits are staying between me and my book.

I'm just minding my business on my lunch break, trying to savor a few moments of solace in the bustling chaos of the office, when x decides to make my midday sandwich a lot less digestible. He strolls up, bold as brass, seeking my profound wisdom on the intricate dance of romance. I mean, really? Do I emit the vibe of a seasoned dating guru?
In front of my entire team, he unveils his quest for love counsel, completely oblivious and unbeknownst to him my questionable dating history – like that time I tolerated a man who thought physical abuse was an acceptable form of communication. Oh, and let's not forget the somnambulant escapade with an ex who had a peculiar fetish. According to him, consent is optional if it aligns with one's peculiar predilections. Not exactly credentials for Cupid's advisory board.
To add a splash of absurdity to this charade, the guy is a whole fifteen years my senior. I'm left pondering what peculiar rites of passage the Gen Xers engage in. Amidst his quest for love, he drops the bomb that he's on a race against time to conquer a checklist of fifty exploits before hitting the half-century mark. At 49, he's got his sights set on the Andes Mountains.
As he rambles on about his bucket list, my mind drifts to more pressing matters – namely, my unfulfilled yearning for an Andes candy bar. You know, the one with those charming mountains on the packaging? A moment of whimsy amidst the absurdity of it all.
Yet, amid the lunacy, a spark of inspiration ignites. I crave my own checklist, one that transcends the mundane. To outlive my father and face the challenges with unwavering courage – now that's a list worth crafting.

Meet Sennheiser's Newest Wireless Headphones and Earbuds
Tumblr media
Audio titan Sennheiser recently showed off some rather tasty-looking tech at the Consumer Electronics Showcase (CES) 2024 in Las Vegas, marking the arrival of new wireless audio products including the MOMENTUM True Wireless 4, ACCENTUM Plus, and MOMENTUM Sport. The company says that the new earbuds and headphones pack "state-of-the-art" tech, making them ideal for power users, and presumably hardcore audiophiles as well. Let's take a look! MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 Starting things off is the MOMENTUM True Wireless 4, which packs some heavy-hitting hardware including Qualcomm's S5 Sound Gen 2 platform and Snapdragon Sound Technology, as well as support for Bluetooth 5.4 and Auracast. Sennheiser says that the earbuds feature a revamped antenna design that improves signal continuity during usage, which should reduce incidents of dropped signals. Other improvements with the MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 include adaptive active noise-cancelling (ANC), and an upgraded battery system that according to Sennheiser can lasp for up to 7.5 hours of playback, although users can of course top up their charge via the USB-C charging case. The MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 earbuds will be available in three colours including black copper, metallic silver, and graphite, and will be available to pre-order on February 15th for £259.99 Sennheiser ACCENTUM Plus For those after an over-ear audio experience, Sennheiser offers the new ACCENTUM Plus headphones, which are designed with optimum sound and comfort in mind. The headphones pack integrated touch controls into the earcups, meaning that there's less fiddling around when skipping trakcs, adjusting volume, as well as answering calls in the middle of music sessions. Additionally, the headphones also come with support for multi-point connectivity, adaptive ANC as well as wind noise reduction, ensuring that the outside world doesn't get in the way of your music. For battery life, the headphones can go for up to a whopping 50 hours of use on a single charge, making them ideal for long flights and trips. There's also an included cable, so you can use the ACCENTUM Plus with devices that feature a headphone jack. They're available in black and white variants, and will be available from February 20th for £199.99 Sennheiser MOMENTUM Sport Last but not the least are the MOMENTUM Sport earbuds, which are specifically designed for active users who like to listen to their music and podcasts while on the move. The earbuds feature a photoplethysmography (PPG) heart rate sensor and a body temperature sensor that can feed data to users' health and fitness tracking apps, including wearables from Apple, Garmin, as well as compatible Strava and Peloton products, to name a few. It also comes with IP55 certification, making it safe to use during intense workouts. Other staples such as ANC, transparency and anti-wind mode make their way onto the MOMENTUM Sport, in addition to an all-new acoustic system with a redesigned transducer, that according to the company can deliver the best sound quality ever in a Sennheiser-branded sport earbud. For battery life, the earbuds can last for up to six hours on a single charge, although users can extend this to 24 hours via the Qi-compatible charging case. The MOMENTUM Sport earbuds will be available from April 9th for £259.99, and will be available in Polar Black, Burned Olive, and Metallic Graphite. Read the full article

Mari Funabashi – Film Composer, Endurance Cyclist, and Triathlete, Bringing Together Her Passion for Music and Outdoor Adventure to Create a New Film - “Beyond Words” - to Amplify the Voices of Underrepresented Folks and Inspire Change.
Born in Phoenix, Arizona and raised by immigrant parents from China and Japan, Mari has always been drawn to stories that celebrate and examine identity, multiculturalism, and diversity.
After completing her Masters at the Royal College of Music in 2019, Funabashi continued to work in London, working closely with production houses Far Away Films and 84 East.
Since then she has composed for many award-winning films, particularly enjoying providing thoughtful and nuanced underscores for films that center around the human condition, although she would never say no to bombastic superhero themes with french horn solos.
Curious and creative by nature, Funabashi often mixes sound design with her musical underscores in order to create truly unique pieces of work that are inseparable from the films they were created for.
Beyond music, Mari is a dedicated outdoors enthusiast, and can be found participating in ultra-endurance cycling trips as well as competing in triathlons. Having found outdoor movement after the difficult passing of her father in 2015, introverted Mari finds the long and solo hours of ultra-endurance sports comforting—a quiet and safe space to check-in with herself.
Her most recent events include a solo bike packing trip from London to Scotland in 2020 (430 miles), the half-ironman distance Castle to Coast Triathlon in 2021 (totalling 81.2 miles) and her 24-hour Manchester to London attempt in 2022 (she made it to 177 miles).

I'm in glorious nippon. With Reggie and Ryan. It's honestly a pretty good time and it feels weird that it's a good time. I was so bummed before going on this trip. I'd been recently reading about attachment disorders and how I'm likely to have the fearful avoidant attachment style. I think this is because I was scared of my dad growing up.
My interpretation of this was that the dread I felt before going on this trip was because I didn't want to, or even straight up couldn't commit to making deep relationships with people. So on this trip I'd be forced to pretend the whole time. But I think that partly I forgot how good I am at pretending and partly I genuinely don't mind being a little close with these guys.
I keep thinking about the girl that followed me on Strava, who lives in Japan actually quite close to where we are staying. I feel it would be weird to reach out so I won't, and that's painful. Oh well. I find that I'm not that attracted to random girls on the street even though there are so many cute girls here. I'm almost at the age I can't say cute girls anymore. I have to switch my lexicon to 'beautiful women'. I wonder if that's because I've truly given up on girls for now. I made fun of (fuck I dont have my naming hcart rn) for being mentally cucked but aren't I more mentally cucked if I can't even feel attracted to random girls?
I requested paper mario for the latte art, and it turned out so well that even the artist took a picture for his own collection. That was honestly the highlight of the trip so far. Gah I want to see that girl that followed me on Strava so bad.
I'm not sure what I want out of the rest of the trip. For Reggie and Ryan it's vacation, but for me vacation is meaningless. I have two months left after this trip to do something with my life before I throw in the towel. I'm honestly really dreading that prospect, and how I think I'll feel terrible again at the end of the year.
Blogging on a trip really brings me back to the trip to New York one year ago when I started this blog. I guess I'm feeling better now because this trip is more fun, but overall in life I'm not sure if I feel better or worse. Anyways looks like I've made it at least one year on this blog, which is far better than I expected. Even though I blog like once a month lol. So go me. Hontoni.

Late Summer Running Tips - Heading into Fall Marathon Season
A graduate of Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Jennifer Heiner holds a bachelor of arts in marketing and economics. Since 2019, Jennifer Heiner has served as the retail director of a New Jersey running company. For many people, one of the greatest appeals of running is its simplicity. Recreational running requires no fancy equipment or extensive training, just a good pair of shoes.
In her various posts and blogs, including on Medium, Jennifer Heiner-Pisano has explored different ways to aid in running and injury prevention.
Marathon training, however, does require a bit more than the newest running shoes. Regardless of whether one is coming back from an injury or not, strength training, and understanding your body mechanics, is so important to ensure that your body is working efficiently. This not only helps prevents injuries going forward but can increase performance levels as well.
Jennifer Heiner volunteers with New York Road Runners, who produce the most famous and biggest marathon in the world, the New York City Marathon, every first Sunday in November. Strava is also a great training tool for runners, swimmers, and triathletes alike, where one can record and post their activities to keep track of their training progress and to share their improvements with friends and followers.
Additionally, one thing that we can also work on as runners is our breathing technique, which can increase lung capacity and function, which actually makes our effort during our workout days easier, which, in the long run (no pun intended) leads to easier recovery. Recently, the 6 Minute Mile blog posted on this very topic.
Tumblr media
Minute 1: Runners can improve their lungs with these tips
Running on scenic trails can leave you breathless — in every sense of the word. Nothing wrong with being awestruck, but we could all do without gasping for air during a punishing hill or alpine interval workout. To avoid that, you can train your lungs, according to this new piece: “8 Ways to Increase Lung Capacity For Running.” Lung stretches and pursed lip breathing (inhaling through your nose and exhaling slowly through pursed lips) can strengthen the muscles involved in breathing. This technique has also been shown to improve your oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange. Another step is to make sure you’re performing some workouts that push your lungs to their limit. Interval runs and hill sprints are a good place to start, and in fact, those are also recommended in: “How to Improve VO2 Max: The Only 2 Workouts You Need.” VO2 max is essentially a measure of how well your body can use oxygen, so a higher VO2 max will make things easier on your lungs. The most effective way to improve your VO2 max is by spending time at your maximal aerobic speed, which is the minimum pace which requires your body to use its max oxygen intake. You could try a workout based on 1000 meter interval repeats to hit this goal. Beyond that, other breathing exercises can increase your lung’s efficiency and capacity: “Breathing Exercises to Increase Lung Capacity.” The first technique is diaphragmatic breathing, aka “belly breathing,” which is performed by expanding your belly while you inhale slowly to move the muscles responsible for breathing through their full range of motion.
