I have to go to the hospital to visit a friend of mine who is transgender today. She attempted to take her life.A lot of people think it's easy being Transgender and to get to where I did which is fully female I can tell you it isn't easy to get here and many transgender people don't make it and get lost in the system and don't get to be their true self and that is sad. My friend is at Grey nuns hospital here in Edmonton I can tell u when I was early on in my transition and I was in grey nuns hospital for the same thing I was lost in the system and getting no help in my transition and decided that if I couldn't transition I didn't want to live. I was lucky I made it but many trans people don't I have been in grey nuns hospital I can tell u it's a shit hole. In the cell they put you in with a steel toilet and a bed that is basically a piece of plywood platform with a mattress thrown on top and a steel sink it's a jail cell. I have been there at this hospital and I sat alone in there with no one coming to visit me. That's why I am going to see my friend today and see how she's doing. I hope she gets out soon. It saddens me to see my transgender friends in the hospital because they attempted to end everything because of not being able to transition or because of family who turn their back people because of who they are. There are a lot of things that can happen. They need to make the transition process here in Alberta Canada easier for trans individuals. I can tell you that even once you get to where I am which is fully transitioned you still face discrimination I just got pushed out of my home by Boardwalk REIT LLP AKA Boardwalk Properties a major apartment rental here in Canada due to the symptoms of my disabilities and because of my gender identity being Transgender. So even once you get to where I am you still face discrimination on the basis of who u are. As I have eluded to, or flat out said, on some forms of social media - I've had some pretty dark ups and downs. Even when it has broken through and the world has an even keel, it suddenly happens again. My therapist recently reminded me of the sheer amount of challenges summers have held for me over the course of my lifetime, from family deaths or mental health breakdowns/abuse to breakups and more. I take a deep breath and try to remind me of that. https://www.patreon.com/posts/70413797 After a mental health "blip" Saturday, this sharing this week on Patreon felt like the right thing to do. Folks who were at my show at the Mercury Cafe a while back will remember this as my closing 3-poem set that summarizes the journeys I have had in mental health. From mania and anxiety to depression to integration... and repeat. The only reason that the first poem, "Hold," exists is due to my poetry editor for my book "On Starry Thighs: Sacred and Sensual Poetry," made me write it. Deborah Addington looked at me and asked if I had any about mania. No Deborah, I don't. When folks are manic they shop, have compulsive behaviors, stay up at all hours, get volumes done (a thing I miss from going on meds a decade ago)... but they don't tend to write poetry.
