Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989)
Tumblr media
Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure is goofy, good-natured, and ridiculous. It's a movie about a simple-minded pair but the writing is clever. The characters are memorable, the script quotable, and overall, it's so easy-going it's difficult not to like even before we dig into what makes it great.
Bill S. Preston (Alex Winter) and Ted “Theodore” Logan (Keanu Reeves) are would-be musicians, the founding and sole members of “Wyld Stallyn” (Pronounced “Wild Stallion”). The boys receive grave news from their history teacher: if they don’t get an A+ on their upcoming report, they’ll fail the class. Ted will be sent to military school. Wyld Stallyn will be dead. Enter Rufus (George Carlin) a man from 2688. To ensure the future's safety, he provides them with a time machine - the perfect tool to piece together a triumphant report.
Immediately, you know not to take the film seriously. We’re told that humanity will, in the future, exist in a state of perpetual happiness due to the inspiration they derived from the Wyld Stallyn. That's tough to believe. Almost as tough as the broad caricatures of Billy the Kidd (Dan Shor), Napoleon (Terry Camilleri), and the rest. The Abraham Lincoln we see (portrayed by Robert V. Barron) isn’t the least bit convincing. Of course not. It’s a lot funnier that way.
Bill & Ted and Wayne's World started a trend in the '90s. Two metalhead slackers with lousy grades embarking on a fantastic adventure. Sounds a lot like Meet the Deedles, Bio-Dome, and others. The imitators were doomed from the start. They featured unlikeable protagonists. What’s different about Bill & Ted? A number of things, first and foremost being that they’re friends, and actually quite intelligent. There is no contrived falling out, not an inkling of animosity between the two. They’re enthusiastic buddies through-and-through. They want to have a great time, and they’re inviting you to come along with them. It’s true that their book smarts may be lacking, but when it comes to the time machine business, it doesn't take them long to figure out how to run circles around everyone else. Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure is one of the few time travel movies in which the rules established remain consistent and the heroes understand, and take advantage of the true power given by time travel. Often the film will do anything for a laugh but the goofiness is a hardbound cover on a book that’s well written.
Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure does not ask you to go on a journey with two people you’d never want to associate with. In real life, you’d have a great time with Bill & Ted, either laughing along with them or at them (just a little bit). Their tight bond of friendship makes them instantly endearing. The adventure they embark upon is delightful. A myriad of quotable lines, memorable moments, and big laughs make Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure a minor comedy classic. (On DVD, March 17, 2017)

FUCK YOU GREMLINS ! /20

Thoughts : Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989)
Tumblr media
As a child of the 1980′s, it felt like I was in a prime position for some of the most entertaining media since the 1960′s.  Technological and social advances were broadening people’s scope of experience, and creatives were taking notice.  The 1970′s created a sense of adventure and experimentation in American cinema, and a financial boom in the 1980′s made everything grander.  As the 1980′s came to a close, the last vestiges of that excess were giving way to the 1990′s and its decidedly darker point of view.  One of the last glorious films of the era, however, was the wonderfully irreverent time-travel comedy Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure.
In 1988, San Dimas High School students Bill S. Preston, Esq. (Alex Winter) and Ted ‘Theodore’ Logan (Keanu Reeves) have visions of fame and success as Wyld Stallyns, but a tough hurdle in reality to overcome due to less than acceptable grades in school.  Their history teacher, Mr. Ryan (Bernie Casey), has issued an assignment for the two : an oral report about famous historical figures and what they would think about present-day San Dimas, California.  Ted’s dad, police captain John Logan (Hal Landon Jr.), plans to send Ted to military school, further complicating plans for Bill & Ted.  Little do the two know that Rufus (George Carlin), a time traveler from 2688, has been sent back to 1988 by the Three Supreme Beings to ensure that Bill & Ted pass history, start Wyld Stallyns, and eventually help turn the world into a utopia.  Rufus brings a time machine (in the form of a phone booth) to Bill & Ted and shows them how to travel in time so that they pass history.  After being introduced to Napoleon via a trip to 1805 Austria, Bill & Ted devise a plan to travel through time, kidnap iconic historical figures, and bring them back to San Dimas for their report.  The pair hope to pass history class, but what effect will their actions have on history overall?
This movie is a delight to watch, and a true embodiment of the spirit of the 1980′s.  The wardrobes fall somewhere between MTv and sitcom attire, the soundtrack has the proper balance of rock and complete camp, and the dialogue is littered with outdated slang and terms/situations that are far from politically correct these days and probably would not fly.  More so, what permeates is the spirit of the 1980′s film formula : lovable losers going far beyond their skill set and scope of understanding to overcome world-breaking or life-changing hurdles in order to succeed.  There is plenty of mall action, skateboarding and high-school humor on top of everything.
The inclusion of historical figures, and making them the fish out of water, is one of the best touches that this film provides.  Be it the clueless nature of the brilliant Socrates, Napoleon being a grade-a jerk, Billy the Kid having a sense of humor, or even Joan of Arc conquering aerobics at the mall, all of the historical figures get wonderful comedic beats, be they misplaced in history or completely lost in San Dimas.
What this film really does well is put an entertaining frame around the power of friendship.  I’m almost certain that there’d be little to no optimism in this film if it were about only one of these characters, but the way that Bill & Ted support one another is a shining example of how important support can be in our world.  They may have a little fun at one another’s expense, but the duo sinks or swims as a team, first and foremost.  Bill does not face repercussions nearly as great as those Ted faces, and yet his resolve is just as strong in terms of making sure the duo succeeds, to the point where Bill risks his own life to avenge what he thought was the lost life of Ted.
It is undeniable that this film was the breakout role for Keanu Reeves, instantly making him a household name.  Alex Winter, who did not see the same levels of fame, was equally entertaining in my opinion, providing much of the set up for the funny moments.  George Carlin basically gets to play it cool for the proceedings, not having to do much other than implement his ‘smartest guy in the room’ attitude he puts off.  Dan Shor is forever memorable as Billy the Kid, slightly outshining Terry Camilleri as Napoleon, Tony Steedman as Socrates and Robert V. Barron as Abraham Lincoln.  Rod Loomis (Freud), Jane Wiedlin (Joan of Arc), Clifford David (Beethoven) and Al Leong (Genghis Khan) were also memorable and hilarious, though they were provided lesser exposure.  Amy Stock-Poynton, Hal Landon Jr., J. Patrick McNamara and Bernie Casey are also notable for their appearances.
At the time, nobody had any clue that a sequel was on the way.  Most just took Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure at face value, making it an instant 1980′s classic.  What came later only solidified the series, and with the green light made official on the final installment of what has become a trilogy, it will be interesting to see how the entire story wraps up.
