Raiders of the Lost Ark is a 1981 film directed by Stephen Spielberg and written by Lawrence Kasdan, based on a story by George Lucas and Philip Kaufman, as well as the progenitor of the Indiana Jones film saga.
It was the highest-grossing film of 1981, earning approximately $330.5 million worldwide, and also a critical success, receiving praise for its modern take on the serial film, its seamless action and adventure, as well as for the cast, especially Ford, Allen and Freeman. The film was nominated for several awards and, among others, won five Academy Awards, seven Saturn Awards and a BAFTA Award.
The United States Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry in 1999.
In 1936, American archaeologist Indiana Jones leads an expedition to recover a Golden idol from a Peruvian temple with snares and deadly traps. When it seems to be successful, the local guide Satipo betrays Jones to steal the idol, only to end up killed by a trap, and only Jones manages to escape alive with the idol from the crumbling temple. Rival archaeologist René Belloq corners him and steals the idol. Pursued by the dangerous Hovitos Indians, allies of Belloq himself, Jones escapes on a waiting seaplane.
After returning to his university, Jones, along with colleague and friend Marcus Brody, is informed by two US Secret Service agents that the Nazis are digging in Tanis, Egypt, and one of their telegrams mentions Jones' old mentor, Abner Ravenwood. Jones deduces that the Nazis seek the mythical Ark of the Covenant, hidden in a secret chamber in the city, which they believe will make them invincible. To find it they must get their hands on the Staff of Ra amulet, guarded by Abner, which can indicate where the chamber is located via a scale model of the city.
At a bar in Nepal, Jones reunites with Abner's daughter, Marion Ravenwood, with whom Jones had an illicit affair, and learns that Abner is dead. The bar is later set on fire during a scuffle with a group of Nazis, led by the sinister Gestapo agent Arnold Ernst Toth, intent on taking the medallion from Marion.

Chapter 15: The Aftermath

A small bird sang a sorrowful tune.
It was not unlike a dirge.
The sound of crying and sniffling filled the space. Someone coughed.
Even then, it was surprisingly peaceful. Like a dream: one didn’t want to disturb it, lest it would end.
Tani opened her eyes slowly. Her gaze fell from the ceiling to her side, where a group of people stood. She could see them around a bed. Their backs were slouched. Her gaze strayed from them slowly, towards the figure lying in the bed. A limp arm hung over the edge.
Death.
Tani was suddenly acutely aware that she was watching death. Something stirred in her memory. It came back in a rush, quite suddenly - a limp body embraced by vines, crushed, bruised, bloodied. She sat up quickly, making her head swirl. Her body groaned as she forced it to move. The barely healed skin stretched, the bandaged and supported shoulder refused to budge. Still, Tani threw her legs off the side of the bed and tried to see who lay next to her. She peeked desperately between the bodies of unfamiliar people to see an unfamiliar face. Her heart didn’t stop pounding heavily despite her relief. It was no one she knew. It was an older woman, with a peaceful blankness on her face. Tani held her head. The sudden rise had made her dizzy again. Her heartbeat drummed in her ears. Her mind felt muddled, enough to make her want to close her eyes. Amidst the swirling of her head, she could hear rapidly approaching footsteps. Tani raised her gaze to see a man wearing a white uniform. His face looked friendly, but unfamiliar.
“Please, miss, lie down still,” he asked, but his tone was commanding.
As Tani simply stared at him, he gently pushed her back to lie down and made sure the pillows were well underneath her head. The softness of the bed felt like it might swallow her.
“Please excuse me,” the man, possibly a nurse, continued with a kind voice. “I will do a small check-up on you before informing the doctor that you’ve awakened. Please lie still.”
Tani watched as his grimoire flew open and blue-and-red threads emerged from it. She stayed still, swallowing slightly. Her throat felt dry.
“Any trouble with breathing?” she heard the nurse ask.
Tani considered the question for a moment before shaking her head.
“Where am I?” she questioned, finally finding time to ask.
“Ah. Let us see. What is the last thing you remember?”
“I was on a mission.”
“Very good. Anything else?”
Tani watched as the nurse pulled a notebook of some kind - a folder? - something which he seemed to inspect. The magical threads were still moving around her, hovering above her skin without touching.
“We went to receive an artifact. One of my team members got hurt very badly. Is he alive?”
“Good. I can find out his condition for you in a few minutes, but I need his name.”
“Luka Diffidus.”
The nurse nodded. Tani wondered if he knew who she was talking about or not. It was difficult to tell.
“There was also Mereoleona--Lady Mereoleona Vermillion. And Icree Papillo.”
The nurse nodded once more. He made a note and seemingly examined the threads that had moved around Tani all this time.
“First of all, you are in the Kikka Main Hospital. I’m sorry about the accommodations, we don’t have much space at the moment. You are still slightly dehydrated. Please take it easy. I’ll bring you something to drink, and the doctor should visit you soon. Do not move from the bed. After the doctor has talked with you, I’ll bring you news of your team, alright?”
Tani mumbled affirmatively. She was in medical care again. At least it was at home. She knew the street she should be on. If she had a window nearby, she would have maybe recognized it. Tani closed her eyes. Her shoulder hurt quite a bit. She had seen that it was bandaged - like most of her body - again. She wasn’t even wearing her own clothes. After a short time, the nurse brought her a drink that didn’t taste exactly like water, but he made sure she drank it. Tani wished he didn’t monitor her so. Nonetheless, the nurse left eventually and the doctor appeared by her side instead. Tani was rather tired. It took all that she had to listen to the doctor explain her condition. The shoulder was very bad, but would heal eventually - something about pain medication - hydration - extensive burns - some questions about how she was feeling - tired, she answered. Tired. She wanted to know about Luka. The doctor’s answer was noncommittal. It was only when the nurse came back that Tani learnt that Luka had been transferred to Tota Hospital due to his critical condition. The doctors were taking good care of him, the nurse assured. It was a very well-known hospital in the Noble Realm. As for the other two names Tani had given, neither of them had been checked in. He had however found out that those were the names of the two people that brought Tani and Luka into the medical care. She thanked him with a weak voice, and finally succumbed to sleep.
The next few times that Tani woke up, she paid more attention to the nurse. He was a freckled man with extremely curly, dark hair and impossibly long lashes. His smile was easy and friendly, and everytime he visited, he was very considerate, resolute and caring. She didn’t think she knew him, but Kikka was a large town. Tani hadn’t had to visit the clinic too often in her own time. It was a strange thought to get stuck on. Perhaps she paid attention to him, because there was no one else that wasn’t sick or wounded. He was alive and vibrant in the midst of all the gloom, and she needed that. She needed someone who knew what was going to happen and was realistic about the situation. So it came that on the early morning of the next day, having a rather more clear head, Tani decided to ask a favour from him.
“Would it be possible to send some letters?” she asked.
He smiled kindly.
“I will bring you paper and ink. Mind you, you’ll need to be patient. I’ve got other patients to see.”
“Thank you. I just want to inform my family of what has happened.”
The nurse looked understanding. As he was turning away, Tani stopped him once more awkwardly.
“I’m sorry, I don’t think I ever caught your name?”
“You may call me Kanshi,” the man said, turning his head briefly to nod at her.
Tani watched as he hurried away. She was certain she had never heard the name before. That mystery had been solved. Later on, as she acquired the writing supplies, she wrote a short letter to her parents explaining the circumstances and where she was. On another paper, she wrote a letter to Icree, asking her to come visit and to bring her a change of clothes. It was only a day later that the red-haired woman stood in front of her, slightly out of breath. It was a quiet day in the room - not a lot of visitors. There was a gleam in Icree’s eyes as she held tightly to Tani’s hand by her sickbed. The barrage of questions was steady and unrelenting. Icree’s voice was barely contained to normal levels.
“How are you? Oh, please be alright. When will you get out? Do you need me to go talk to your family? Will you--”
“Icree, Icree, please,” Tani stopped her with a slight laugh. “One at a time. Let’s see here. They are monitoring me, but I should be discharged within a week. The shoulder will require an extensive period of healing, but I can continue that at home. They told me not to take a mission for a month or two. Kanshi - the nurse - promised to give me some stretches to do when the shoulder is better.”
Icree’s shoulders relaxed a little as she looked at Tani. They smiled at each other a little apologetically. Tani continued a little softer.
“I’ve sent a letter to my family. They haven’t answered yet, but if I know them, they’ll come visit as soon as they are able to. Thank you, by the way. For taking me to Kikka. It’s easier for my family to visit.”
“We were in a hurry to get you and Luka treated. The whole thing came down, you know,” Icree said, shaking her head.
Her smile vanished as she was thinking back.
“You probably don’t know. Do you want me to tell you what happened in the end?”
Tani looked at her slightly sorrowful face and hesitated.
“Tell me first about Luka. Have you visited him?” she asked.
“Yes. I’ve been by his side most of my time. He hasn’t woken up yet. They didn’t have to amputate anything in the end, but he broke a lot of bones and had some internal bleeding. They say that his body is simply forcing him to rest. I’m--well--they say he’ll be fine. They said we made it in time. We took you first into the nearest doctor. She performed first aid and then we whisked you away to Kikka for better treatment. They transferred Luka almost immediately.”
Tani nodded, closing her eyes for a brief moment. Luka would be fine. In her heart, she wouldn’t be able to accept it until she’d see him moving again. She hoped that by the time that she was discharged, he would have woken up already.
“So, what happened to the dungeon? Did you get the artifact?” Tani questioned, trying to distract herself from the thought. “What happened to the raskonik?”
“Lady Vermillion burnt through it pretty fiercely. When it hit you, it kind of - well, froze. Lady Vermillion used that moment to quite violently wrench the ring out of its body.”
“Did it - did it die?”
Tani wasn’t sure why the thought made her sad. It would be logical to wish for the creature to be dead. She didn’t.
“I don’t know,” Icree confessed. “I was panicking. You and Luka lied in puddles of blood.”
Her voice shivered a little.
“When Lady Vermillion took out the ring, the creature - no, the whole dungeon screeched. Everything trembled around us. We took the hint. Lady Vermillion grabbed you and I took Luka. We booked it out. Last thing I saw of that creature was when it was lying on the ground, on fire, its eyes still on you.”
“What about her? Is she also in a hospital somewhere?” Tani asked perhaps a little suddenly.
“Her?”
“Mereoleona. Lady Vermillion.”
“No, not as far as I’ve heard. She said that she knew someone who could take care of her, someone in the Royal Capital. She nearly dragged you there as well. Honestly, I think she meant the King’s doctor.”
Tani smiled widely. The thought felt warm in her chest. Mereoleona had nearly dragged her to someone that important? It would’ve been absolutely embarrassing for Tani, but the thought was very sweet. It was very - well, she didn’t know the proper word. Very caring. She sighed and shook her head.
“The mission is done, right?” she questioned carefully.
“Yes. I’ve handled the paperwork and everything. You don’t have to worry about anything other than getting better. I’ll come visit you again--?”
Tani shook her head, ending the other woman’s sentence short.
“It’s alright, Icree. Stay with Luka. I have my family here and I’ll get out soon,” she explained, trying to alleviate all the things Icree felt like she had to do.
There was a slightly doubtful look in Icree’s eyes.
“If you want to do something for me, get Lady Vermillion to come down here in a week,” Tani laughed a little. “I need to talk to her.”
The doubt turned into a playful curiosity as Icree grinned.
“Do you now?” she teased while settling to sit more comfortably. “I’ll arrange it if you tell me what’s going on between you two.”
“Fairly little,” Tani confessed. “But I want to make sure we are on the same page.”
Icree looked at her meaningfully.
“Stop it!” Tani said with a faint warmth rising to her cheeks.
Still, seeing Icree cheer up a little made her feel happy. If gossiping about her crushes and love life made Icree think of something else than her wounded friends, it was worth it.
“I like her a lot, but we also argued a lot down there. We were mean to each other. I need to apologize for that. I was needlessly pointy.”
“You were in a tense situation. I know how you get when you are tired,” Icree commented.
“It doesn’t excuse it. I do want her to apologize to me too!” Tani pointed out. “She hurt me a great deal, and--and I want to thank her. Not for hurting - I mean - for helping. And I want to figure out where we are going.”
Icree nodded sagely, a twinkle in her eyes.
They talked briefly of other things - of repairing the squad capes, taking care of Tani’s plants, of Kliodna and Fragil and the other members of Azure Deer. Normality returned to Tani for that short moment. She felt like she could get up and walk out with Icree. When Kanshi came to take her guest away, however, tiredness took over. Too much excitement exhausted her. Luckily all that Kanshi made her take that night were painkillers to help her sleep and that strange tasting water. Kanshi had already explained once that it was to help her stay hydrated.
The days passed relatively quickly for Tani. Her family came to visit her on most days, either together or alone. They brought her flowers and books and made sure she was comfortable. Tani felt herself lucky to have such a caring family. They offered to come take her home after her discharge, but Tani insisted on going back to the headquarters. The last thing she wanted was to lie in a different bed as everyone else was working hard around her. At the headquarters at least someone would be lazying about, and she could be with her plants. As Tani stepped out of the hospital, her own clothes on and a bag of her things on one hand - the other being back in a sling -, she noticed a familiar figure on the street. She would recognize that orange-red hair anywhere. Bright blue eyes stared straight at her with a fed up expression. One tooth poked out of the woman’s mouth.
“Hey,” Mereoleona Vermillion greeted, immediately walking up to her.
Tani smiled, feeling a rush of happiness go straight to her cheeks.
“Hey,” she answered softly.
She wanted nothing more than to embrace the woman in front of her. It was too bad that it was a busy street in the middle of the town and that the said woman was a noble through and through. A first-born of a royal family. A commoner like Tani -
“Give me your bag,” Mereoleona commanded, cutting out her thoughts.
Tani gave her a curious glance.
“Did you come all this way to take me home?” she asked with a slight teasing note in her voice.
Mereoleona looked at her for a brief moment in silence, then nodded.
“I was told you had things to say to me. Might as well help you home.”
Tani smiled at her, accepting the explanation. It made her a little nervous. They flew to the headquarters in relative silence, Tani holding one hand around Mereoleona’s waist. If she pressed her head slightly against that strong back, she could smell earthy, reassuring scent and feel the muscles tense underneath. When they were back on the ground, Tani realized that they had landed in the woods near the headquarters rather than in the courtyard. She looked questioningly at Mereoleona.
“I thought the fresh air would do you good,” the woman said with a slight glance to the trees. “Walking is a good exercise after lying in bed for a week.”
“Thank you, Mereoleona,” Tani answered gratefully.
She didn’t hesitate to continue this time. She knew what she wanted to say.
“I’m sorry for being horrible to you in the dungeon. If you’ll let me explain - I think I can explain it to you.”
Mereoleona raised an eyebrow, but didn’t say anything. Tani took it as permission to continue.
“You might’ve noticed that I don’t hold nobles in high regard. I’ve seen a lot of it growing up - those lesser in status than others being pushed down by those--well, nobles. People picking on those with less wealth just because they can get away with it. I need you to understand that I don’t -- no, that is a sidetrack.”
Tani sighed, looking down to the ground.
“I’m sorry that I judged you based on my experiences when it came to a dangerous situation. I really don’t think of you that way. I know you are a fair and kind person,” she said. “It came out wrong when I was down there, because I couldn’t admit my own limitations. So, I’m - I’m sorry.”
Tani raised her gaze to look Mereoleona in the eye as she said her apology. She believed that a proper apology should be done that way, if possible. She watched as Mereoleona considered her, changing her weight onto another leg.
“Apology accepted,” Mereoleona shrugged. “I really didn’t take it to heart, but if it’s important to you--”
“It is. I like you, Mereoleona. I didn’t mean to be so mean to you.”
“Thank you. I don’t think either of us was on the best behaviour there. Even if I didn’t realize the situation - I’m sorry that I also hurt you. The biggest reason for you getting hurt was me. I--I do admire your tenacity.”
Tani laughed a little to herself. What an awkward sentence. She smiled a little lopsidedly at Mereoleona.
“Well, that’s that then,” she said cheerfully. “I better get going.”
Mereoleona’s expression changed a little, and she opened her mouth as if to say something more. Tani could see her hesitate, then cross her arms and stay silent. It was a strange look on the otherwise confident woman. Tani walked closer to her, their eyes glued to each other. She opened one of her arms as if to invite a hug. Mereoleona didn’t stop for long to wonder, but instead embraced her carefully. Her strong arms felt very safe to Tani. The hug was short, but warm. For a brief moment as they were separating, they stopped with their faces close to each other. Tani’s heart beat wildly. She stopped breathing. Then, Mereoleona pulled away, and she followed suit.
“Thank you for coming,” Tani said still.
Mereoleona nodded.
So Tani began to walk away, looking at the familiar building behind the trees. The sun was shining brightly in the sky. The conversation felt a little too short, like she had forgotten all the things she had wanted to say. There was more, wasn’t there? At least she had said she liked Mereoleona. Though the other had never said it back. Yet there, when they hugged, she could have sworn there was something there. Tani stopped and turned suddenly. She looked at Mereoleona, still standing there, as if waiting.
“Hey Mereoleona, do you like me?”
A bird sang somewhere. A small smile tugged up on Mereoleona’s lips. She began walking towards Tani, closing the distance with each measured step. Tani had to look a bit up - that was how close she came. When she spoke, it was softly, yet her laugh was low.
“Fool. Have I not shown it?”
A slight blush rose to Tani’s face as an answer. Mereoleona took a hold of her hand carefully and leaned closer. Tani looked at her, wondering where it was going. She half-closed her eyes the closer Mereolena came, finally feeling lips grazing her cheek. They separated slowly, measuring each other, admiring each other’s smiles.
“I’ll see you later then?” Tani asked hopefully.
“My treat,” Mereoleona said with an affirming nod. “I know this great tavern in Kikka…”
Tani laughed, moving away from the half-embrace they had had.
“Well, until then,” she said happily, turning to leave for real this time.
Tani practically skipped the way to the headquarters, stopping only after she had closed the door to the entrance hall behind her. She had the urge to lean against it and sigh dramatically, feeling giddiness overtake her. Then her eyes fell onto the person standing right in front of her, a smug smile on the lips.
“Well, well,” Icree teased with a pleased tone.
Tani sighed. This would be trouble. Perhaps it was the type of trouble she liked, though.
She thought back to the strong way Mereoleona had held onto her, the slight softness in those bright eyes. She looked at Icree.
“Get something for us to snack on, and I’ll talk,” Tani said, matching her grin.
Icree let out a victorious cry and almost ran to the kitchen. Tani thought back onto everything that had happened. It almost didn’t feel real, but here they were.
She and a noble.
No, not a noble.
She and Mereoleona.
It was a nice beginning.

These were a few of the most interesting papers/presentations at a conference seemingly tailor-made for me (!) -- The American Weird: Ecologies and Geographies -- held in April 2018 at University of Gottingen.
I knew about this conference months in advance, but I couldn’t afford to attend. :(

Here’s some material from the formal description and program for the conference:
For H.P. Lovecraft, the weird conveys “a subtle attitude of awed listening, as if for the beating of black wings or the scratching of outside shapes and entities on the known universe’s utmost rim.” Taking its cue from Lovecraft’s enduringly influential conceptualization, this conference examines and broadens the notion of weirdness towards an ecology and geography of the weird as a new field of theoretical and practical resonances. What we call The American Weird comprises not only an aesthetics evoked by literary practices or films from the genres of the gothic or horror, but also by other forms of cultural expression, such as music, sculpture, photography, and performance art. The conference theme also aims to address new theoretical perspectives on humanity’s relation to the world, perspectives that have recently been proposed by what might be called the “new demonologists” (e.g. Graham Harman, Eugene Thacker, and others).
Against the backdrop of new ontologies and epistemologies of the weird, the following questions will form the conceptual backbone of The American Weird: What are the ecologies and geographies of the weird today, and how are they conceived, perceived, and reworked? Which strands of contemporary critical theory and philosophy have engaged in a dialogue with the discourses of and on the weird, and what is specifically “American” in The American Weird? If weirdness is more than a mere index of parody and/or subversion, how might one conceive of a politics or an ethics of the weird? These and related questions on The American Weird will be explored in a three-day conference at the University of Göttingen.

-- American literature “from Charles Brockden Brown and Edgar Allen Poe’s short stories to the authors of ‘the new weird,’ like Jeff Vandermeer, China Mieville, and Thomas Ligotti.” -- The “visual weird” of sculpture artists, and of photographers like Diane Arbus and Cindy Sherman, dealing with “the liminal spaces that open up between the camera’s alleged ‘reality effect’ and evocations of weird America.” -- “The filmic visions of Tod Browning, David Lynch, David Cronenberg, and others, as well as recent TV-series that resonate with the aesthetics of the weird, such as True Detective, The Walking Dead, and Stranger Things. How to film the weird? Is there a moving image of American weirdness?” -- “The eco art, land art, or bio art of Robert Smithson, Joe Davis, and others.” -- “The comics and graphic novels of Robert Crumb, Charles Burns, Daniel Clowes, and others”

There was also an explicit focus of the conference on how to study and define “the weird,” which I thought seemed really helpful to those scholars/hobbyists trying to define, articulate, understand how and why “liminal space” and “regional Gothic” are appealing and persistent.
“The different theoretical approaches which assess the cultural productions of The American Weird, from subcultural discourses to contemporary materialism, ecocriticism, and realism. What is the function of the weird as a concept vis-à-vis notions of the uncanny, the grotesque, the abject, and the carnivalesque? What are the milieus, theories, histories, and practices of The American Weird?”
