Now Is the Perfect Time to Watch Some Movies Set in 2024
Now that we've made it to the new year, why not enjoy some old visions of it? I at least love to start the first few weeks of a year by going through the films set in the new year, as listed marvellously by Wikipedia.
Because I'm interested in old visions of the now-present, I usually skip movies that were produced in the last ten years. Because these usually don't provide very bold predictions. This criterion leaves the following seven entries for a Get Ready for '24 watchlist:
Beyond the Time Barrier. A 1960 time travel flick. Never heard of it. A quick look at the plot reminds me of Return to the Planet of the Apes. Which I kinda liked for its batshit abstrusity. Anyway, the movie is short and exactly what I'm looking for. So I'll definitely try to somehow get my hands on it.
A Boy and His Dog. This 1975 movie likely is the most notorious of this list. Not sure how well the film has aged, but it has been loitering on my to do list for years now, so the stars are aligned as good as never before.
Highlander II: The Quickening. Very likely to be the worst movie of this list. Haven't seen it yet, I think (or I forgot it after watching). And I haven't heard anything good of it, but at least it tells a story related to climate change. Which is better than nothing, I guess.
The Thirteenth Floor. I absolutely l o v e the German TV movie "World on a Wire", and Thirteenth Floor is a remake of this. I watched it once, but before seeing World on a Wire. So although Thirteenth Floor has only on small bit of its plot actually taking place in 2024, I really look forward to a rewatch of this 1999 production.
.hack//The Movie. A 2011 CGI anime movie. Never heard of it, but why not.
Underworld: Awakening and Underworld: Blood Wars. I remember liking the first Underworld movie, and I don't recall much of the other four films. So I think I'll use the final two installments playing in 2024 as an excuse for a rewatch of the whole series.
Narcopolis. This is a 2015 movie, so my Older Than Ten Years rule technically disqualifies this entry. But I'm quite intrigued by the story of a UK that has all drugs legalized. So I'll give it a watch.

I wish some talented vampire nerd out there would be writing ff's about David from Underworld.
Yes, it's very niche. Yes, it's super specific, but god, there's ff's about reader x argus filch, and yet there's seemingly nothing for DAVID? Come on now, that's taking the piss.

I don't know which audience this will reach but hopefully it reaches someone.
My 7 year old nephew finds it ABSOLUTELY hilarious and adorable when I call grown men "Baby girl". As one does thanks to whatever social media site they saw the idea on. Not to mention the hilarious people they see using it on a desired man.
My nephew out of the blue, while watching "Underworld Awakening" with me. (because 1. Theo James is bae in that and 2. I'm still working on my story around his character and my own.), My nephew has declared Theo James as Baby Girl.
Baby girl Theo James.
Even
Baby girl David (from the Underworld movies he's in).
You know what? That kid isn't wrong.
I never considered it myself. So I'm glad he brought it to my attention hahaha!!

I only really watch Theo in the Underworld franchise (yes he's only in 2 movies..but I like the franchise.) I watched him in Netflix's, "How it Ends", Allegiant (but that was for a big forehead...), and "Lying and Stealing" it was on Netflix.
I'm encouraged by my nephew to "do my homework" as we call it. To watch more of Theo's work and "study him" in a way.
So yeah now you know, Baby girl Theo James, haha!
(btw this is forehead)
Tumblr media
Meant as a playful joke because the pennywise costume "accentuated" Bill's forehead... 😂😅
Why I watched only for him? Don't ask it was a dark period 😬😳

SHIP SERIES
David / Eve Underworld Awakening (2012 film), Underworld Blood Wars (2017 film)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've been dying for a new Underworld movie to feature these two and let Kate Beckinsale's Selene retire so do speak, but doubtful that will ever happen. The Underworld franchise got fatigued like so many franchises. Anyway, David is the last of the pure blood vampires and Eve is the only vampire-lycan-corvinus hybrid to exist, together these two would and are unstoppable. Imagine the children!

I’m watching the underworld movies for the first time and I like the first two and I loved rise of the lycans. Now I’m on awakening and it’s not bad necessarily but I wish the movie had a different plot.
Like the lycans and vampires have been at war for centuries but they’ve now learned that they have a single ancestry and all of the vampires/lycans that have believed in the old ways and the original vampire and original lycan have all died. Now the humans know they exist and want to exterminate them all. Selene, a vampire death dealer who has been betrayed by vampire kind, and Michael, a being referred to as a lycan by the vampires but is actually a hybrid now, are lovers who represent something new and are representative of why the war started in the first place. You can see where I’m going with this right?
This movie should’ve been that alone the humans hunted both species to near extinction. Michael and Selene have both been captured by humans. They wake up and discover that their kind(s) have all but been demolished. They also learn that their daughter is still being held captive by the humans and in order to save her (a metaphor for the future of the lycans/vampires) their kind, they have to find a way to make a truce between the two species.
Idk it just seems like a better movie and story and natural progression from the previous stories than what the actual underworld: awakening was about because it made the lycans a weird villain once again (not just antagonist) because they *checks notes* don’t want to die anymore? So they took captive people that have actively hunt them down? These movies keep trying here and there to make lycans the bad guys when they are trying to just survive? Which is also the same story for the vampires now? And the whole crux of this series at least was a love between a lycan and a vampire (Lucien/Sonja or Selene/Michael)
These are my thoughts
