This issue, Kitching & Elson bring us “Pirates of the Mystic Cave” and- …Amy’s been kidnapped again already? Gosh darnit, that’s not off to a good start for her!
Tumblr media
Okay, at least she went out protecting Tails. According to Johnny, who may or may not have had a crush on Amy and wanted to defend her honour. I really don’t know
Also, we get a rare bonding moment between StC Sonic and Tails to enjoy! See? It wasn’t all bad between them. Tails is the only one who got through the door, so Porker and Johnny will be twiddling their thumbs (or hooves, in Porker’s case) until they get back
Tumblr media
The two encounter some badniks, which knock them both out. I like the detail of Tails’s tails spiking as he gets gets shocked
Tumblr media
Here he is, Captain Plunder! Along with some of his crew, which doesn’t presently include one of its better known members, Simpson the Cat. Regardless, Plunder is here to boost the non-Robotnik villain roster and, also, Amy doesn’t seem remotely worried, so good for her
Tumblr media
This is a good issue for the “No, StC Sonic really does care about Tails, he’s just very British about it” argument
Tumblr media
What Plunder actually wants is the Chaos Emeralds, which Sonic refuses to give him on the grounds that he doesn’t want Robotnik to have them. I guess that casually confirms that Sonic does have all the emeralds right now, which would make sense, given that the comic is set after Sonic 2 and we’ve seen him go Super Sonic a couple of times. Yes, they didn’t imply his super transformation was because of the Chaos Emeralds during either of those times, but that’s how I’m reasoning it in my mind
Anyway, this is when Plunder confirms that he’s not working for Robotnik, he merely stole the badniks and now they listen to him
Tumblr media
I feel like most of you have probably seen “Tails! You can fly you idiot!” before, but now you’ve got the context for it
We also get a proper introduction to one of Plunder’s crew, Filch, who Plunder killed himself. I love how casual Filch is about this. Like, he becomes a ghost and is like “Oh well, I shouldn’t have taken that extra biscuit” and then continues to serve Plunder. You have to admire that
Tumblr media
Amy is the one who ends the conflict by using the age old logic of “The enemy of my enemy is my friend”. I know some could argue that this is a typical “girl character stops the boys from fighting” angle to throw at her, but I’m just glad to see Amy getting to solve a conflict after being kidnapped for her first two appearances
And it looks like “villains confusing Amy for Sonic's girlfriend” is just the running gag of the time
Tumblr media
To no one’s surprise, it seems that Plunder doesn’t intend to make good on his side of the agreement, since he wants the Chaos Emeralds more than anything that raiding Robotnik’s air freighter could get him. I guess part of that plan could be letting the trio go today and maybe we’ll find out next time, since the teaser says the story is called “Slave Ship”. Or maybe it’ll be further down the line? I actually don’t know. Especially since Metal Sonic’s appearance is also on the cards
Like I’ve said before, I like Captain Plunder. There’s no deep reason behind that, I just think pirates characters are fun and I’m glad to see more villains outside of Robotnik. We have had several other villains before now, even some who’ll be recurring, but so far they’ve all worked alongside Robotnik to some degree. Plunder and his crew are the first ones who are doing their own thing and I feel the comic is ready for it by this point

I wish some talented vampire nerd out there would be writing ff's about David from Underworld.
Yes, it's very niche. Yes, it's super specific, but god, there's ff's about reader x argus filch, and yet there's seemingly nothing for DAVID? Come on now, that's taking the piss.

English Major Rereads Harry Potter to See If It's "Actually Bad and I Just Have Nostalgia" As The Internet Says Pt 1: Chamber and Filch You Good?
What is going on with the frog brains.
Okay before I explode into thoughts: we GOTTA talk about the humour (I promise it's related). Because it is genuinely well-played. Some of the chapter endings are a little choppy and standard-kids book-like. But when Ron says that a teacher "would have to be really thick" and then the next chapter starts with Lockhart? Freaking hilarious. (Ron's wit is so much more hardcore than I remember. Guy takes NO prisoners and is the ACTUAL smart one, hot take).
But much of the humour is derived from nonsense. Not a bad thing, just how it is. Basically, the narrator will describe the world during jumps in time: what the characters have been up to and the locations the characters are in as well, as what non-main characters have been doing in order to give Hogwarts a more homey feel. Not always necessary but it works. And sometimes it comes back for the plot. Ex. Fred and George blowing up the salamander introduces the firecracker for Harry to use in Potions.
BUT this type of description hits- my goodness- it hits DIFFERENT as an adult because the humour which is literally just "weird description of something, move on" is just whack nonsense and leaves me with so many freaking questions. Like, "ha ha the ghosts are playing Head Hockey". As a kid, you're like "haha the ghosts are playing Head Hocket" and now I'm like "THE GHOSTS ARE PLAYING HEAD HOCKEY?? ELABORATE???" It's funny, it works, but DAMN is it weird.
And right now, I'm hung up on: Why tf is Filch cleaning up frog brains in the dungeon with the fking FLU?
Like, as a child, I just accepted this moment. That Filch is both sick and upset because a bunch of third years splattered frog brains on the dungeon ceiling and that is what is important to the plot. It's just Hogwarts being funny and quirky! The end! But NOW I'm like- like- I have SO SO many questions.
1) What the actual hell were those third years DOING? I'm assuming making potions since it was in the dungeon. So-
2) Why tf is SNAPE not doing anything about it? Man LIVES down there and doesn't he teach Potions to, like, literally EVERYONE? The book describes how there's a bunch of staff and students with colds (to set up how Ginny is looking "peaky" from being possessed, nice little foreshadowing), is he sick too?! But wouldn't he have Pepperup Potion? Why is SNAPE not fixing this?!
3) Was it a prank? Were these dumb kids just "guys being dudes" or something and blew up a bunch of frogs? Again, if so, how tf is Snape not on their cases? They're IN THE DUNGEONS.
4) Okay, new angle. Maybe they AREN'T in class and just studying downstairs. Explains how Nick and Filch knew they were third-years. I still need to know: Where is Snape.
5) So Snape is unavailable (current situation) or just not wanting to clean up (doesn't seem much like him, usually he'd make the students do it or just magic it away) and there's only Filch- who has the fucking FLU?! Where is HIS Pepperup Potion?! What happens if the man HURLS? You gonna make him clean that up too?!
This leads me to the next big question. Aside from how Filch's office apparently smells like fried fucking fish (i'm SORRY?! HOW WHY), I'm really starting to wonder...wtf is going on with Filch at ALL?
Narratively for the second book, he's important. He introduces the concept of squibs (a very complex and...strange thing that I shan't get into here), introduces Harry's really powerful ability to have empathy, adds another antagonistic adult party to the staff, and works as a background character to flesh out the environment. But STILL.
Why is this guy with no magic cleaning up magic nonsense?! Why was he hired at all?? What dirt does Dumbledore have on him? Is it just cuz Dumbledore feels bad for him? Oh, you feel bad, Dumbledore? Where's the man's Pepperup Potion?!
I don't think Filch's past being neglected is really a flaw. I think it works well with his character being this gross, mysterious, pathetic (in both sense of the word) man who is every kid's worst fear without the moral complexity (like Snape). As of right now in Chamber, he's an idea (Joker voice) while still being a character. I don't think that's bad, it is a very standard idea for kids books, especially British ones like Roald Dahl. Filch is effective as an idea.
I just didn't realize I'd be thinking so seriously of him as an adult. And that Harry Potter is...like...kind of absurdist fantasy?! Huh?!

Here There be Monsters: Creature Basic Intros (Part 3)
Ichabod
Capran, any pronouns.
A friendly Creature whose species is widely known for enjoying tricks, humor, and wild company. Ichabod is even friendlier than the average Capran— anyone who treats him kindly can expect a close companion for as long as they'll allow him to stay.
His mind works quickly enough to run in circles more often than not. The bizarre things that come out of his mouth are usually hilarious, but it's impossible to understand what he's thinking. He's adaptable, good-natured, and eternally trusting of anyone he decides is "good". With a fondness for human culture (especially media), he's determined to adapt to "society" and make friends.
5'5. Surprisingly stocky build for his height, though he never seems to put on weight no matter how much he eats. Thick, ginger-blond hair that fights any comb, gauges in his ears, and a wild spattering of freckles over his skin. Yellow eyes with a goat's signature square pupils, and thicker body hair than a human.
Filch
Goblin, he/him.
The definition of a remorseless troublemaker, his uncanny skill for knowing exactly how to get under people's skin is truly loathed. He's capable of invisibility, shapeshifting, and intuition, but only uses his skills to cause problems for those around him.
Filch is the kind of disrespectful and careless that makes enemies at every turn. He lives for entertainment, but his annoyance-based sense of humor turns that simple goal into a constant problem. He has a habit of stealing, not out of greed, but purely for the sake of the problems his theft will cause. Forever living in the moment, he's both easy to please and immaturely reckless.
4'11. His teenage-like appearance is far from his true self, but Filch's dark, greasy hair, dull eyes, and taunting smirk fit the part well. His pointed, oversized ears and sharp teeth are more unusual, though, and the rasp in his voice doesn't fit his surprisingly youthful face. Somehow, he always seems dirty.
Mithri
Naga, they/them.
Their species, the Anatolian Naga, has venom that can supposedly be transformed into a cure-all antidote. Unfortunately, they tend to be exceedingly prideful and uninterested in human well-being. Supposedly, they have supernatural intuition for medicine as well.
Mithri is the kind of self-centered person who believes that they can do no wrong. They have the utmost confidence in their own abilities, and take every perceived slight against them as a mortal sin. They're vindictive and quick to lash out at others, but their ego doesn't make up for the terrible luck that follows them.
6'0. Tall, slender, and graceful, with the kind of lean muscle that contains far more strength than it looks. Brown skin, copper eyes with slit pupils, pointed ears, prominent canine fangs, and hip-length aqua hair often worn in complex up-dos. Their face is almost inhumanly beautiful, but their expressions are mean.
Senka
Shadow Beast, any pronouns.
A shapeshifting Creature known for its unmatched speed, and often associated with children, dark nights, and sudden visions. Though Senka's species usually hides in the shadows, when one bonds to a human, they're protective and fiercely loyal.
Their silent stare comes off as intimidating, but in reality, Senka is more impassive than volatile. An observer who prefers not to get involved with complicated problems, they follow orders with frightening efficiency and seemingly no thoughts of their own. However, they can be surprisingly patient with children and younger Creatures— especially those who can do the talking.
5'10. Dark skin, void-black hair, and piercing red eyes that glow with an unnatural light. Their exact appearance is difficult to precisely pin down— even their facial features fade from memory once you stop looking at them. Athletic, muscular body, sharp teeth, and a creeping darkness that follows their steps.
Eberhardt
Dire Boar, he/him.
His species was commonly hunted by humans throughout the Middle Ages— their strength and aggression made them a valuable trophy prize for the wealthy. Due to living in isolation, he has a highly outdated idea of how human society now functions.
Outwardly, Eberhardt comes across as a reserved, relatively polite man who speaks little and follows orders well. Though he's exceedingly loyal if he respects someone, most people are met with stony disdain. He has a strong dislike of certain humans (especially hunters) and a bad habit of getting a bit carried away when using his strength. His brutality is truly outstanding.
6'2. Impressive in both stature and build, with the aura of a battle-hardened knight. His hair is sandy brown, his one remaining eye is a deeper, warmer shade of the same, and he has a variety of prominent scars scattered across his face and body. Though he's technically rather handsome, his expressions are far too cold.

Throw-away line.
The curious things authors do with throw-away lines.
I'm rereading The Prisoner of Azkaban when I come across a line I'd completely ignored when I was younger. When Sirius Black shreds the Portrait of the Fat Lady, do they send the painting out to be professionally restored? No, they don't. They delegate that task to Filch. Filch the caretaker. They expect him, a squib who can't do magic, to restore an enchanted painting. Filch.
Now I could just explain this as saying, well, Filch is responsible for cleaning up messes and general upkeep in the castle, therefore it's his responsibility and J K Rowling doesn't have clue one how much expertise goes into restoring a painting.
But Filch does restore that painting. Somehow or another he stitches all the pieces back together as good as new. This means that that crusty old man has the skill and expertise to restore not just old paintings, but enchanted paintings. Perhaps his real job has been as the conservator of the castle's collection of paintings all along. Somewhere in that building is a room full of paintings he has set aside for repair work. Paintings that need mending, paintings that need cleaning, and paintings that just need a little freshening up.
And all this time we thought he couldn't do magic.

I feel bad for Argus Filch. Not a lot of people talk about him, but I think he deserves a few words. We always see him as this grumpy, vengeful caretaker that looks forward to punishing students.
But think about him for a moment. He's a Squib. This means that he comes from a family of wizards without actually being one. Being a Squib in the Wizarding world must be extremely hard, as if you were not truly part of your family. We know that he hates his condition, because he longs to learning the magical arts without being able to. Given that being magical in the Harry Potter universe is genetic, he's the outcast of his family.
Yet he works at Hogwarts, the most prestigious Wizarding school, surrounded by wizards and being constantly reminded that all the people around him have something he will never have, and the only thing he can do at that school is cleaning. He's surrounded by people he can't relate to, reminding him of the failure that he is, probably making him feel less of a man. The fact that he insists so much on punishing students is, in my opinion, out of sadness and envy.
Argus Filch, just like Snape, isn't an inherently bad person. He's a person who's hurt and who lives in a place that fosters bad feelings. Poor man needs a hug and lots of softness, because he probably has never experienced it.

Filch tells me that wizard society treats squibs like filth. They are seen as lesser than others because they can't use magic. And, I honestly think they are viewed as worse than muggles because squibs are born from magical parents and if they are raised pure-blood parents then they don't know how to deal with a non-magical child. Plus, they must not have many, if any, jobs for squibs in the wizarding world because Filch was allowed to stay at Hogwarts even though he was horrible to the children.

Oh, they’re being sneaky about it! We do get a teaser of Metal Sonic this time, showing this brilliant sequence of what looks like Sonic being defeated by him, but is actually a dummy. All while only showing us small glimpses of Metal Sonic to build suspense. While Metal Sonic vs Sonic doesn’t come to pass in this issue, we know know for sure that it’s coming soon
Tumblr media
The actual Sonic is busy trying to stop Robotnik from conducting a raid on the Emerald Hill Zone, with the Freedom Fighters (including Amy) at his side
Tumblr media
Sonic gets them all caught almost immediately, but he seems chill about that, so I’m not worried either. Alsooo… it’s hard to be sure, but is that the first appearance of Amy’s crossbow I see there?
Tumblr media
I mean, it’s pretty small, so it might not be, but that’d be cool if so
Tumblr media
Today’s “villain we’ve never met before, but is working for Robotnik” is this guy! But more interestingly for the lore count is that he mentions taking the Freedom Fighters to the Veg-o-Fortress on Mount Mobius, which is a location from Sonic Spinball, the only game to feature the SatAM Freedom Fighters. They don’t appear in StC, but I think it’s neat that the location is mentioned, since I didn’t remember StC doing anything related to Spinball
Tumblr media
Though we might not even get there, because the ship’s being raided by pirates! Looks like Plunder and Sonic are at least making good on their alliance for now and that’s why Sonic wasn’t worried earlier. I kind of feel bad for Johnny being the guy not in the know. This issue, Johnny has been back-talking Sonic quite a bit, which I honestly think is a sorely needed role in a team that otherwise is either too intimidated by Sonic or (presently) too infatuated with him to stand up to him
Also, Amy does have her crossbow, yaaay!
Tumblr media
One short fight later and our villain is done! I don’t even think we got his name
Tumblr media
Porker, nooooo! Oh man, Sonic’s gonna be so mad! I feel so bad for Porker here, even if he was oddly specific when revealing the location of the emeralds lol. I guess we’ll see how that pans out next time!
