The dangers of writing about one of your favorite books in your MFA thesis is that you begin to transcribe one of your favorite emotional passages so you can analyze it, and then you start crying.
Oh Darius and Stephen Kellner, how do you do this to me every time?

Dienstag, 23.8 - Tag 5 Varna

Title: Darius The Great Is Not Okay
Author: Adib Khorram
Genre: YA Fiction | Friendship | LGBTQ+
Content Warnings: Depression | Anxiety | Bullying | Terminal Illness
Overall Rating: 9.9/10
Personal Opinion: Darius Kellner suffers from clinical depression and anxiety. He’s never had any real friends and he’s pretty sure his father is disappointed in him. When his Persian grandfather becomes ill, the Kellners fly to Iran to spend time with him. Adib Khorram weaves this eloquently enrapturing tale about a boy who is scared to be more than he is. It’s about a boy who makes a friend who he cares about and makes him feel wanted. It’s about him confronting his demons and learning his worth. And... I see a lot of myself in him.
Do I Own This Book? Yes! It was actually the last book I bought from the local bookstore in the college town I went to. The day before my flight home, I went to the store one last time and found this jewel.
Spoilers Below For My Likes & Dislikes:
Likes:
- This novel captures the terrible effects of depression and anxiety in a kid who feels like he shouldn’t be depressed. Because in his mind, “nothing bad has ever happened to him.” Darius is second-guessing himself constantly. He finds it difficult to speak his mind even when there’s so much he wants to say. He’s lonely because he’s clueless at socializing, faces casual xenophobia from Trent, and feels like he’s constantly disappointing his father. Like he’s not enough for Stephen Kellner. It’s painfully relatable, to the point where I feel like I know everything that he has gone through and it allows me to not only sympathize, but actually picture myself in his shoes.
- Speaking of relatability, the fact that Darius doesn’t know how to exist in Iran is way too relatable. Especially whenever he interacts with his relatives. I am always dealing with people making comments about how I don’t understand Chinese or about my gut or why I don’t have a girlfriend. It’s just the experience of queer fat kids with traditional families. It just sucks. I am happy for Darius though. The language barrier isn’t as thick and he actually likes his family. And his family makes an effort to include and love him and I love that. Likewise, he wants to make the effort to know more about his extended family and he puts in that effort even when it’s difficult in the beginning.
- Anytime Sohrab and Darius had a fight, I understood. The utter humiliation of having your intact penis compared to the Ayatollah’s turban sounds miserable. The way Sohrab exploded that day he found out his father died in prison makes sense. He’s a teenager who was upset and knew how to hurt Darius, but even through all that, they persevered. They’re still best friends that treasure each other. It’s so precious and I want to protect them. The gifts they exchanged, the non-judgment of their interactions, everything is perfect. Their friendship not only makes sense but it works so well. And when they fight, I don’t feel like choosing sides because I understand their reasoning for reacting the way they do when they explain it. The same cannot be said about other fights in other books that I have read.
- Darius’s relationship with his father, Stephen Kellner, was so frustrating to read about. But when you learn the reasons as to why Stephen was so distant, it all falls into place. Depression is a hell of an illness and he was so disappointed in himself for failing his family, it was hard on him. It thrills me to see how their relationship grows so much. Even if all it took was a single conversation about his son’s heart being broken. Because you could see it, all those pieces and fragments of their relationship repairing itself in those last few pages. It’s sort of magical.
- I think, something else that Khorram does that no other writer has ever done as well, is give his main character this wealth of knowledge when it comes to his mental illness. Darius is aware of his shortcomings and he knows which ones are a result of his depression. The medical jargon helps the reader understand that he’s trying but it’s difficult. Meanwhile, in other books, characters engage in toxic behaviors and just go, “Yeah, everyone does it.” Darius, on the other hand, engages in toxic behaviors and wishes so badly to change. I respect that more than I think I’m capable of explaining.
- Also it doesn’t get explicitly revealed until the sequel but Chip being queer was a thing I called the moment he tried to tell Darius about his backpack. The fact that he liked Darius was obvious from the ending too when they rode their bikes in the same direction. He’s not a bad kid, just horribly misguided by his ass of a best friend, Trent Bolger.
Dislikes:
- Stephen saying that he wished his son was “more normal” made me cringe. I get it. He had no idea how his words would impact his son. But god, the way he had talked to and about Darius before their “big conversation” was awful. I hated it. Like it doesn’t matter what shit you’re going through, you’re his father so don’t say shit like that dude. It’s gross and demeaning and it’s no wonder Darius had believed he wasn’t good enough. You would think that Stephen also having depression would make him more understanding as to why it’s difficult for Darius to be “more normal” too. Yeah, he should make more of an effort but you can word it nicely. Anyway, I'm glad he learned and grew. But it shouldn’t have taken his son running away for him to realize that. This honestly the only reason why I can’t give this book a perfect 10.
- There were a lot of Star Trek references. Not necessarily a bad thing. There are always going to be characters that hyperfixate on media that I just know nothing about. But there was a lot. I like the tea hyperfixation though, there was a lot of sensory details involved whenever Darius talked about tea.
- Babou shouting at Mamou, how dare he. But I forgive him since he had a brain tumor. Humans are not immune to illness. But it still sucked seeing Babou act out in certain ways and breaking sweet Mamou’s heart.

Review: Darius the Great Deserves Better by Adib Khorram Rating: 5/5
“You deserve people in your life who make you happy, Darius. No matter what. Just remember that. Okay?”
Something changed for Darius Kellner when he came back from visiting his family in Iran. Now he's got an amazing job at the tea shop of his dreams, great friends on the school soccer team and even a boyfriend, Landon. But his parents are overworked, his exuberant little sister is hiding in her room and he's terrified of his relationship getting physical. Darius thought he had a handle on things but it turns life is never uncomplicated.
After falling in love with Darius in the first novel, I was thoroughly excited to see how he was going after his momentous trip to Iran. And it was so wonderful to see how confident he'd become and how he was broadening his horizons. While the first book was very much about Darius's relationship with himself, I think this book was more about his relationships with other people and learning to navigate them.
I loved getting to spend more time with his family - especially his queer grandmas! I picked up on their queerness when I reread the first book this week but then Khorram slides in and shows that not only are they queer, but Oma is trans! And he tackled what it was like for Oma to come out as an adult with children and grandchildren and it was such amazing representation that I wasn't expecting.
Laleh also had a lovely little arc. It was so hard to read about her own struggles with encountering racism at school but I loved how Darius made sure she understood she wasn't alone. I loved getting to know Shirin, Darius's mother, some more and it was very emotional reading about Stephen experiencing another depressive episode. Khorram writes about depression so admirably.
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the stuff about the soccer team. It was great seeing Darius make friends and I loved getting to know Chip. I was a little worried when I picked up on Chip's attraction to Darius because of his history as a bully but Khorram makes sure to handle the trope sensitively, in a way I haven't seen before. Chip's character development was awesome and I loved him so much by the end - way more than I ever liked Landon.
And we do get to touch base with Darius's family back in Iran - including Sohrab. It's mostly sad as Babou is getting sicker and sicker and Sohrab's mysterious disappearance halfway through the novel was terrifying but Khorram's choice to write about Sohrab and his mother seeking asylum in Turkey was amazing. I kind of hope we get another book just about Sohrab - I'd love to learn more about his journey and about the Bahá'í faith.
An incredible follow-up to one of my favourite novels. I'll be keeping an eye out for whatever Adib Khorram writes next!
Warnings: Bullying, discussions of depression and some homophobia and racism.

Today is a day we weren't sure would ever happen. For most it may not seem like much but these 4 songs have waited years to be recorded and shared with you all. Each song signifies a very significant part of this band and were written through some of the toughest times in our lives. Written through death, heartbreak, anger, and depression, these songs stay very relevant to us to this day and we hope they can mean as much to you as they do to us. It took from 2013-2020 to finish writing all of these songs and we want to give a huge thanks to Stephen Kellner and VuDu Studios for helping us make them exactly what we imagined. The link for BONES is in our bio. From Ricky, Jason, Justin, and Luke, thank you for caring, thank you for listening ❤

how does Tumblr function as a digital community?
Tumblr.
The seething cesspool of art and porn and trivia and memes and vanity that sprung to life from the depths of the internet in 2007. The brainchild of David Karp, Tumblr was created by a teen, for teens. It’s a construction of images, GIFs, video, text and opinion; all customizable in order to allow the user the greatest freedom possible. The algorithm allows users to keep content they are interested in on their feed, whilst still allowing them exploration.
Tumblr itself is a simple concept; half social media, half personal blog – Tumblr is where people with passion come to talk about it, create about it, reblog about it. It is now one of many other such platforms; online spaces slowly coming to replicate, or indeed, create social spheres. Habermas (1989) defines a social sphere as a place where society comes to share private thought which becomes public opinion. There is nothing more private and yet public, than the melancholy ramblings of a late-night Tumblr poet, or the excited trilling of a Sherlock fan reblogging GIFs of Benedict Cumberbatch.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The young and the old that use Tumblr have one thing in common; a desire to connect.
It is a collection of communities within communities within community, and each sect may overlap or borrow from the other, and indeed some posts might get so famous that everyone has seen them. What makes Tumblr so special is that it allows for freedoms other social media sites didn’t seem to take into consideration. Despite the recent changes to policy, the removal of NSFW accounts and barring of other so-called inappropriate posts, the majority of the usership remains loyal to the freedom of expression and connection Tumblr offers.

How does Tumblr function as a digital community?
Tumblr, the social media blogging site to end all sites.
Tumblr has always been a more out there and extravagant community, with an abundance of fandoms, artists and writers, who under anonymous users or their real identity can create and share their ideas and opinions of the world.
Tumblr was forged by the one and only David Karp in 2007, a high school drop out at the age of 15. He created a site for teens, by a teen. This can easily be noted by the abundance of GIFs, memes, texts and images available for all to have the creative freedom they wish to desire.
Tumblr was made to be a universal social media space, where one could blog about anything they wish while also keeping up on news, one may say it is half social media and half personal blog; the best of both worlds. It used to be very alone in how in operates and performs but now Tumblr is one of many online platforms which allows those to replicate or create social spheres. Habermas (1989) defines a social sphere as a place where society comes to share private thought which becomes public opinion.
Tumblr is a place where teens go to escape, speak out about issues that they are facing with the save anonymity, ramble their 7 Redbull’s into monologue after reading a new book, a place where people can say the craziest of things just for the sake of saying it or simply to spout random facts of which make people lose their minds.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Really its all about a couple of things for both old and new folk of Tumblr; making connections and saying what they are too afraid to say in person.
Tumblr is a community which has communities within communities, they may all intertwine, some may gather more likes and reblogs but what makes it so unique and interesting is that Tumblr allows content creators to create with an arsenal of tools that other sites do not allow or would ever consider. Although there have been recent changes to policy, particularly the removal of NSFW accounts and the ban of other “inappropriate posts”, the majority of freedom of expression is still possible through what Tumblr provides.

Olimpiskiot maraton vo Minhen 1972 se održa 5 dena posle tragedijata so izraelskite sportisti. Povtorno pobedi amerikanec... posle 64 godini... so čudno prezime za dolgoprugaš (Frank Shorter). Svetskiot rekorder Derik Clayton (2.08.33) završi 13-ti, no rekordot od 1969 ke mu potrae do 1981

Južnoafrikanecot Josia Thugwane nekolku meseci pred pobedata bil ograben i zastrelan. Title: Darius The Great Deserves Better
Author: Adib Khorram
Genre: YA Fiction | Romance | Friendship | LGBTQ+
Content Warnings: Depression | Anxiety | Bullying
Overall Rating: 10/10
Personal Opinion: Following Darius’s trip to Iran, he returns to the states much more confident than before. He has his first boyfriend, he’s working at his dream job, and he’s making friends on the soccer team. Not everything is as perfect as it may seem though and as you read why, you’ll find yourself repeating the title to yourself again and again. Because Darius Kellner does deserve better.
Do I Own This Book? Yes, I bought a copy the moment I learned there was a sequel!
Spoilers Below For My Likes & Dislikes:
Likes: - Firstly, the title. It is perfect. I mean, there were literally so many points in the book where I had to put it down and say, “Yeah, Darius does deserve better!” His relationships with sex-hungry Landon and flip-flopping Chip were  a mess. Boys. Come on. It works with the title and content though. Darius grew up and he has learned so much. But he’s still dealing with depression, anxiety, and body issues. Those will never go away but he’s learning to live with them. And I think that is so incredible because he is. He’s learning to live with them. I adore him and I want to protect him.
- Gabe and Jaden are real ones. I love them. They have small roles but they support Darius through thick and thin and especially through all of Trent Bolger’s stupidity. Gabe is an amazing player and doesn’t blame Darius for their first loss. Jaden is a Fractional Korean so ayyy, Asian rep! Love that. And when Jaden told Darius that he wanted to keep being friends even after the season ended? I just about fell in love.
- I love the development of Grandma and Oma slowly but surely opening up to Darius. As tired old queers, I totally get where they’re coming from but damn, they could’ve been at least a little nicer. But it does kind of make sense how they ended up making Stephen.
- Laleh must be protected. The racism she dealt with, the microaggressions! Her teacher, Miss Hawn, just straight up ignored it all. Darius trying his best to help her truly made my heart swell. And he was so supportive of her in all of it. Even encouraging her to go to the gifted program and it was the right decision! I adore their relationship.
- There were many adorable moments with Darius and his first relationship with Landon. I also love the intense chemistry between Darius and Chip. It’s electric. There were so many moments where I physically “aw”-ed. But I love that their relationships weren’t perfect. It was so real and you knew, at the beginning, he would not work out with Landon. Because he wanted more than Darius could actually give him. I do appreciate him for asking if Darius was okay with some of his touches and kisses but there were moments where Darius obviously didn’t want to go any farther and still, Landon pushed. I am glad that Darius knew to put up boundaries and Landon respected them enough not to cross them.
- I did not get Chip and Trent, like Darius said. Until the  end when Chip explains that Trent is his Sohrab. Then it all clicks. And I love that he needed that moment talking to Darius to realize he’d been complicit to everything bad happening to Darius. Teens, man. It’s hard to do the right thing when it means you might lose your best friend. You let certain things slide. So I do get it on some level. Trent’s an asshole but his history with Chip makes him important to Chip and I respect that.
- The growth between Darius and his father is magical. They became so much closer, so much more affectionate. And he talks to Darius like a father should. Reminding his son that he’s proud and that he loves him no matter what. It makes my heart swell.
- The progression with Darius and his mother too. I love that they talked about how she was acting around him whenever he did something queer. And it resonates with a lot of what I have seen. Not homophobic, just insecure. Darius having no real desire to discuss until the end makes sense to me too because he was so afraid that his mother would hate him. He was afraid Mamou would hate him. And we all love Mamou.
- Sohrab makes me want to cry so bad. I love everything about him. He’s so supportive of his best friend. I, too, was so god damn worried something really bad happened to him when he went off the grid. But he was just seeking asylum! Oh god, I hope he comes to Portland. If he and Darius can be seniors together in another sequel, I’d die happy. The way he talked to Darius about Chip made me so giddy too. Ugh, I want to hug him and protect him from all the people that reject him just for being Baha’i.
- The taarof jokes are great too. Javaneh’s parents and the moment when her dad was so shell-shocked by Landon, who did not understand taarofing, telling him “okay” had me rolling.
- Landon kinda sucks but I’m glad he had that last talk with Darius. I’m glad Darius was able to walk away from that relationship because it really was toxic. I mean, Landon said that he hooked up with intact guys like that was the thing to say after That Scene. I mean, hello? Not everything is about sex.
- Speaking of Landon though, I love his dad. I thought that I wouldn’t because he seemed so elitist about tea. But damn, when he told Darius that there’s nothing wrong with having a hobby stay a hobby instead of a career, I wanted him to be my dad.
- Coach Bentley? A queen. I love how supportive she is to the team. I thought she was going to be cutthroat but she was so nice to everyone. No matter how much or little they did on the field, she made sure they didn’t feel bad about their shortcomings and instead worked with them to improve. That one team-building exercise is just so cute too. I adore her. I want her as my coach. And I don’t even sportsball.
- I love all the casual diversity throughout this book. Chip is part Latino, Bentley is black, Laleh’s friends with South Asians, Oma is a trans woman which makes Grandma a queer woman, and I’ve already mentioned Jaden’s Korean. Then we have the nameless customers at the tea shop, like non-binary folks and same-sex couples.
Dislikes:
- I do not get Trent. His best friend is queer and he’s still an asshat. Homophobic too! It’s so ridiculous. The guy literally saw Darius and Landon together and tried to spread rumors in hopes of Darius being targeted. All the gay sex jokes too. Why was he so obsessed with Darius’s sex life?! It’s just nonsensical. He was supposed to be Chip’s best friend and yet he didn’t act like it. Was he in love with Chip or what? I’m so glad Darius said, “You can have queer friends and still be homophobic” and “This isn’t a TV show, where you can torment me for years and then kiss me […] It doesn’t work like that!” Because he’s right. Everything Darius said in that moment was right! I just… I am so happy that he was able to put his foot down with Chip’s complicit behavior. Trent is the one that makes no sense to me though. He lives in a liberal town, there’s a QSA at school, his best friend is queer, so what was his deal? It’s so confusing, I need a deep dive on how he was raised.
- Ay, yo, Landon, what the fuck. I love that he asked for consent and cooked for Darius’s family but damn, the sexual advances were too much, my guy. I do think Darius could’ve spoken more on his body issues but damn. Slow down.
- Chip thinks Darius is beautiful naked. I love that. But don’t tell someone about someone else’s penis! God. How was he so blind to Trent’s behavior? “That’s just his sense of humor.” You think stealing bike wheels and a seat and being constantly homophobic and calling someone a “terrorist” is HUMOR? Chip, I am going to need you to take an EQ test for your own good. Yes, teenagers are dumb but what the fuck.
- It feels like there is more to this story honestly. Like there is room for a third novel. What if… one from Chip’s POV? Because I feel like his life needs a deep dive. I was really rooting for him and Darius but dude. You fucked up with telling Trent that. You do not tell people other people’s private business.

Beautifully Mundane | Darius the Great Deserves Better by Adib Khorram
Tumblr media
Started: August 27th, 2020
Finished: August 27th, 2020
Darius the Great Deserves Better solidified Adib Khorram as a new favourite YA contemporary author of mine. Khorram writes stories with such heart and compassion and I could read books about Darius Kellner for the rest of my life.
This sequel takes place a few months after the ending of Darius the Great Is Not Okay. Our favourite fractional Persian is having a good junior year. He’s on the soccer team, has a great boyfriend, and snagged an internship at his favourite tea shop. However, with his parents working later and later nights in an attempt to rebuild their savings, Darius’ home life is tense and stressful. As the months progress Darius finds himself overwhelmed by his new responsibilities at work and his relationship with Landon gets more complicated. In this book Darius learns to navigate new relationships and responsibilities all while attempting to figure out exactly what he wants from life.
This book is a quiet story with very few peaks and troughs, but Khorram captures the significance of the mundane incredibly well. This is because Darius is a compelling narrator. If you loved him in the first book I can’t imagine not being charmed by him in this one. The conflict he faces in this novel is slightly different, but Khorram still brings that same charming energy and wholesome uncertainty to Darius.
Darius is forced to confront the complicated dynamic of having different wants and need in a romantic relationship. As a natural people-pleaser, Darius has to learn how to set boundaries and communicate what he does and doesn’t want when it comes to intimacy. While I’ve seen similar conversations in YA this is the first I’ve seen it from a boy’s perspective and it was incredibly well handled. Landon and Darius’ relationship was sweet and wholesome while also being messy and complicated. Seeing Darius navigate the many facets of a relationship was amazing.
Darius also deals with a new and surprisingly overwhelming job. Darius has dreamed of an internship at the Rose Hill Tea Shop his whole life and throughout this book realizes that his passion for tea doesn’t directly translate to wanting it to be his job.
I loved seeing Darius make lasting friendships and find community in the varsity soccer team. Both his teammates and coach were consistent pillars of support, and given how isolated Darius was in the first book it was lovely to see him in such a wholesome environment. Coach Bentley worked to cultivate a non-toxic environment in the team and I loved seeing them support each other.
The way the book delved into Darius’ relationship with his paternal grandparents was unique and relatable. Darius’ grandmothers aren’t as openly affectionate as his Mamou and Babou so it was nice to see him warm to them as the story progressed. Darius’ yearning for connection with his grandmothers and his desire for some sort of queer community with them was so wholesome. It was also interesting how Khorram touched on how growing up in a family with mental health issues can negatively affect your relationship with them long term.
As well as falling in love with Darius in the first book I fell in love with the entire Kellner clan. Because of that seeing them go through such a stressful time financially was heartbreaking. Darius loves his family and you saw that in his anxiety over the stress they were under. Darius’ dad Stephen’s slide back into depression because of his loneliness and isolation shattered me. Because of that seeing the Kellners power through their hardships and make it past such a difficult time made for an incredible ending to the story.
Stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟½
Darius the Great Deserves Better was a balm to the soul. I adored these characters and everything Adib Khorram had to say through them. Khorram is a great writer and he makes everyday scenarios rich and compelling. If you liked its predecessor you will definitely love this book and I would highly recommend both to fans of quiet beautifully mundane coming of age novels.
