Star Trek (almost) lost media saved!
Have you heard about The Official Star Trek Cooking Manual (1978)? Written from the perspective of Nurse Chapel, it includes recipes from different Earth cultures, as well as Vulcan, Klingon and Romulan recipes, which are some of the earliest examples of words in these languages in the franchise and an interesting attempt to expand the canon.
The book has been out of print for almost forty five years. To my knowledge, it has never been scanned, and no luck locating it in physical libraries either. And with the current Amazon listing for a second hand copy going for about $100, it seemed destined to go unarchived and become lost media very soon.
However, this has all just changed! A fellow Tumblr user has very kindly scanned and uploaded the whole thing! You can now read the book here:
https://anonfiles.com/5b80m863y0/Star_Trek_Cooking_Manual_1978_pdf
And a backup is on Z Lib as well!
You can go read it right now! And let us know if you end up cooking anything 🖖

Finally finished Enterprise: The First Adventure and it was fun but unfortunately and likely accidentally, it made Kirk a creep
Tumblr media
SPOILERS
Okay so unfortunately there is a massive elephant in the room regarding this book. For, what I can only guess was a ploy to sell other Star Trek books so this could get developed more, they decided to give Janice Rand a tragic backstory. In this tragic backstory, her family was traveling on a ship, and due to a warp drive/core issue, they accidentally time traveled 3 years into the future.
This happened when she was a child, but due to the aftermath and Janice herself hiding the truth so she could support her younger brothers, the records never got corrected. So at the time the book takes place, she is legally 19, but physically 16.
No one knows the truth besides Uhura, but the book ends with Janice promising to tell Jim everything.
Which means if she does tell him, in that first half of s1 of TOS, Jim Kirk is knowing crushing on a teenager.
I guess it should also be noted that Jim is mostly annoyed with Janice more than anything else in this. He doesn’t think he should need an assistant as he’s never had one before but is forced to admit he does and instead of picking one just asks the whoever is in charge of the yeoman’s to send him someone. So they send Rand and she is meek and nervous and oh my god what happened to her? This was not Rand in the tv show. But big picture is it’s never implied he’s attracted to her in this book.
Which would be fine if I didn’t have a tv series that suggested otherwise.
There are a lot of things in this book I think would make for a fun live action episode, but good god do we not need this.
Please.
Get this away from me.
God why is this even here?

Anyone who’s read any of the Star Trek books (mostly TNG), my coworker needs suggestions. Nothing too emotional but a good read. Thanks!

Is there somewhere else the Star Trek cookbook is hosted? That site started with a fake popup that can’t be avoided on mobile. (And if not, would it be okay to download a copy and host it elsewhere?)
Hi there! I uploaded it to WeTransfer for you, feel free to upload it wherever you prefer that's more permanent and pass it on 👍

I also wanted to apologise because when I tried the original link it worked for me and I didn't get a pop up, so I was not aware this was an issue for others.

It's canon that Spock likes to fuck with people and pretend he doesn't know human sayings just so he can make people explain it to him.
And then Kirk just knows when Spock is serious or is just being difficult and obtuse on purpose. They're married your honour.

to demonstrate the issues with spock’s characterization in certain star trek adaptations i’ve made this convenient chart
Tumblr media
as you can see here, recent spock iterations simply are not serving enough cunt
we can clearly see that snw spock is at a critically low level of cuntiness, whereas aos spock does have noticeable cunt. however, it is negligible seeing as tos spock was already off the charts in cuntiness.

My one problem with Star Trek is that no one is ever consuming contemporary media. As in media that's contemporary for their time period. Everyone is always reading old novels and practicing classical music. They study Klingon Opera or read old Cardassian mysteries. No one is ever like really into obscure Klingon Nightcore. Nobody is reading shitty Ferengi pulp novels. There's no kids media of any kind. Where is space Sesame Street or junior novels about gaining superpowers from a warp core accident? What about comic books? Nobody is playing crappy indy holodeck games. It's always some recreation of a historical battle or just lounging in a mud pit at some alien spa. Someone give me angsty Bajoran protest music. I need some rebellious teens producing the worst most cacophonous death metal techno that they recorded in an empty cargo bay. I need contemporary pop culture in Star Trek.
