You know it is funny how Roddenberry was like “no we can’t kill Kirk’s dad offscreen, this could screw us over for future episodes.” And then never even brought up Kirk’s family again after his brother was murdered by aliens.

As a side note, I find it interesting that earlier in the script process Spock was given the role of Horacio, yet in the final product that got moved to Bones, while Spock got to be Ophelia. In the actual episode, Spock is the one who is ready to arrest Karidian/Kodos once he goes over what evidence they have and tells Kirk he’s needlessly putting himself in danger.

Meanwhile Bones is the one stressing Jim needs to figure out what he’s really after here. Justice or vengeance?

@favvn here is what I learned from These Are The Voyages for "The Conscience of the King". It looks like the idea of Kirk's father being one of Kodos' victims was rejected very early in the process, April 1966

People need to stop trying to logic Conscience of the King

“Of course it’s Kodos why is Jim such an idiot?”

Because he doesn’t want to confront his trauma.

“Why didn’t they just do a DNA test?”

Because all the authorities had was a body so badly burned it wasn’t even confirmed Kodos. So comparing any DNA to what they had STILL would’ve failed. Also this was written in the 60s before DNA testing was widely used.

“Why was a 13 year old Jim even on tarsus iv?”

That’s for Jim to know and Jim to tell. And Jim made it very clear he does not like talking about this. Big picture is he was there, survived, and witnessed a genocide.

Fun part of TNG vs TOS is you can see they had all the money they could’ve ever wanted thanks to TOS and especially the movies’ success.

It’s honestly crazy how good this show looks, especially on Blu-ray.

The Doctor Who fan in me is insanely jealous.

Right requiem was s3 so technically Spock was just quoting Kirk but I love imagining the alternate reality where requiem came out or took place before this and Spock gets all confused and starts somewhat panicking that Kirk somehow remembers what happened.

Still Spock actually quoting Kirk there is also a nice touch.
