FROZEN // FROZEN 2: Elsa got many responsabilites that fateful night, and Iduna ...

The idea that Elsa got warned by her father about the possible threats of the Enchanted Forest, and then by Gran Pabbie about the dangers of her own powers, in the same night is a lot for her.

The difference between the two warnings lies here: Agnarr's warning was more of a reflex of his own trauma recalling about the Enchanted Forest, and Iduna was able to intervine promply and bring some peace, while Pabbie's warning was in a dire situation with Elsa herself, and Iduna didn't know what to do except following her husband lead.

Interestingly, when looking back at F1, Iduna's hiding who she truely was (a Northuldra) creates a even stronger parallel and connection with Elsa:

In the Broadway adaptation, not only Iduna calles the Hidden Folk through their chant and reveals her true origins ("A children of the Northen Nomads"), but she's also the one that says "She can learn to control it, I'm sure", and the Elsa's first pair of gloves belong to Iduna. So, Iduna a lot more to do in the Musical to connect her more with Elsa's journey, and this was essential for F2, as Bobby Lopez said himself:

“The mother really didn’t have any lines at all in the first movie; she was a blank canvas that we could fill with something exciting, and a secret. There was a day when we were writing both the Broadway show and Frozen 2 and we wrote that lullaby [‘All Is Found’]. It was the same character, on the same night [in the story], but in two different media.”

The movie version also re-adapted those elements connecting Iduna & Elsa through Northuldra scarf, as a reminder of her own people, but also an item that symbolises the new closenes between Anna & Elsa in the present, working as a contrasting element to the gloves used by Elsa in F1, a symbol of secrecy and hidden truths:

In addition, these items have an ulterior narrative meaning for Elsa journey through F1 & F2:

In Frozen, the gloves create a contrasting parallel between Elsa & Hans. Where Elsa was destined to become Queen of Arendelle, for 13 years with Agnarr's mantra inside her head "Conceal. Don't Feel. Don't Let It Show", while Hans, as 13th in line of the Southern Isles, was aspiring to become King and a hero in the eyes of everyone.

In Frozen 2, the scarf rappresents the Northuldra culture, in contrast to Arendelle's old ways, embodied by King Runeard and his gloves. The gloves in F2 hide the real intentions of Runeard and Arendelle's (the human world) old ways, while the scarf, with the four symbols of the Spirits, foreshadows Elsa's true destiny in the Enchanted Forest (the magical world): the Fifth Spirit.

Jack-o'-lanterns have such a grab bag of lore, i love it

Fire, of course, has a long history of offering protection from evil forces. During the Celtic festival of Samhain (from which many Halloween traditions originate), the veil between worlds was considered thin, and ritual bonfires reminded the spooks to stay on their side of the lane.

Many a lantern has protected the lonely traveler on a dark moonless night. But lanterns can be dangerous too—especially the supernatural ones. in certain folklore 'jack-o'-lantern' was another name for will-o'-the-wisps, atmospheric ghost lights (or as legend has it, lost souls) that appear above bogs and lure unwise wanderers into sinkholes.

Then there's the 18th cent Irish folktale of Stingy Jack, a mischievous fellow who tricked the Devil twice, exacting a promise that hell would never claim his soul. So Jack goes on his cheerful way, and dies (as humans are prone to do), and ends up at the pearly gates. Now Heaven, it turns out, doesn't want a damn thing to do with him. So Jack jaunts on down and goes knocking on the gates of hell—only to have Satan slam the door in his face! How this leads to Stingy Jack being doomed to wander the earth carrying a hollowed out rutabaga lit by an ember of the flames of hell, I couldn't tell you. But that is how the story goes.

Whether the legend of Stingy Jack inspired or fueled or was created-by the gourd-carving practice, by the 19th cent, Irish, Scottish, and Welsh alike were annually carving jack-o'-lanterns out of turnips & rutabaga & beets & potatoes, and lighting them up to ward off Jack and other wandering spirits. Immigrants carried the tradition to North America, where pumpkins were indigenous and much easier to carve.

And so the modern Jack-o'-Lantern was born!

Not that gourd lanterns were anything new. Metalwork was expensive, after all, and gourds worked as-well-as and better-than-most crops when it came to carving a poor farmer's lantern.

As for carving human faces into vegetables, that supposedly goes back thousands of years in certain Celtic cultures. It may even have evolved from head veneration, or been used to represent the severed skulls of enemies defeated in battle. Or maybe not! Like many human traditions, jack-o'-lanterns evolved over multiple eras and cultures and regions, in some ways we can trace and others we can only guess at. But at the end of the day, it makes a damn good story, and a spooky way to celebrate—which is as good a reason as any (and a better reason than most!) to keep a tradition going.

In conclusion: happy spooky season, and remind me to tell yall about plastered human skulls one of these days 🎃

Theres another part to the conversation in the racism of calling Native American spirits "cryptids" that has to do with this idea of underestimating the intelligence of Native people & how we understood our land & ecosystems & devaluing that, because very often you hear this talking point from cryptozooologists say something like "x cryptid exists, but the Native Americans have a near exact spirit in their culture, could they have mistaken it for a spirit?": this premise doesn't acknowledge that most "cryptids" in the Americas are appropriated Native spirits, but instead proposes that these "cryptids" existed FIRST, are possibly now exitinct, and that Native Americans simply weren't "intelligent" or "advanced" enough to understand that it was a real animal & instead had "mistaken" it for a spirit of some kind & gave it that name.

This is also a complete misunderstanding of multiple Native spirits & spirituality & shows the ignorance of it because sometimes it just doesn't work this way, and #2, again underestimates & devalues Indigenous knowledge on science and biogeography. Like, we knew our animals and plants. We knew how & where to find them & what time of year they mated & what they ate & how best to utilize them while remaining in harmony with them, but you don't think we would have knowledge on these "cryptids" if they were actually "cryptids"? (Because again, the definition of a cryptid is an animal that may or may not biologically exist in the world, and may or may not be extinct, and there's little proof on their existence, but has gained notoriety because of tall tales surrounding their existence. A spirit is not that, & is religious.)

Like in many religions, there's a separation from the physical & spiritual/supernatural where the spiritual won't have a physical form, which is why theyre called spirits. If there was an animal that existed in our lands that we physically interacted with then we would have told you. White people still don't believe Native American oral history that we had horses in North America that went extinct, pre-Spanish reintroduction of them, but ironically cryptozooologists & nerds also still won't believe us when we say "bigfoot" isn't a "cryptid" but instead a spirit. So I think its just a case of White ppl refusing to acknowledge our intelligence & knowledge about our own land
