Week 3: Favorite WLW ships

15-week sapphic challenge

Canon:

Calliette (First Kill)

Say whatever you want to say about First kill, but if you deny their chemistry, you are either lying or you lack taste. Even the trailer got me. I think they have the best or one of the best and passionate kissing and make-out scenes i’ve ever seen.

Wildmoore (Batwoman)

I can’t even start on how amazing their chemistry is. They served a lot of tropes and their banters alone gave me a lot of feelings. The slow-burn was worth it and i think this is one of the most realistic ships in wlw media out there.

Sharmen (The L word)

I don’t even like The L word in general and i know Shane is problematic, but can’t help but love this ship. Aside from the hot scenes, i love the angst and their cute little dates. Also, i love hurting myself. :)

Ayo x Aneka (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever)

Spoiler alert: Very very few scenes, but those little scenes are cute and enough for them to be on my list. Give them a spin-off and they will be unstoppable.

Avatrice (Warrior nun)

I haven’t seen the whole show yet (I’m still on S01E03), but seeing the stills and gifs on twitter, i already ship them. They’re cute and wholesome.

Non-canon:

Wheighton (TSLOCG)

Future canon, i can feel it. And we need more than 1 fruity in a friend group, come on. I also love Alicia, but it’s rare for me to get attached with fast-burns. I think they’ll have an ideal ship dynamic. + Them being BFFs irl :’)

Darlentina (Darna, 2022)

This is canon, our country is just homophobic. Best Filo wlw chemistry and deepest relationship dynamics. Just hoping the actresses will have an actual wlw project together soon, coz this show is trash.

Camille x Indigo (Betty)

Almost canon before it got cancelled! Can’t describe the chemistry without spoiling, but check the show out. Girl-friend skater group with fruity majority.

Poussey x Taystee (OITNB)

One-sided canon. They’re amazing as bestfriends too, but imagine if they were romantically canon? The power? Greatest and deepest love story on any media, bye.

Tegan x Michaela (HTGAWM)

Queerbait-ish with all the teasing, but it’s fine coz Tegan x Annalise is also great, i just find TM cute with all the banters, angst, “jealousy”. And before you come to me, i know Michaela is toxic and the age gap is fine because they’re both grown adults. I just enjoy their dynamics.

Top 10 Francis and Mary moments on Reign:

10. Proposal (S01E08 Fated)

After finally making it official at the end of the last episode, Francis and Mary have a pretty sweet moment in the episode 8 when Francis proposes to Mary and she says yes. She’s full of worry about England, but Francis reassures her they’ll have a lifetime to face things together once they’re married. He vows to pressure her, and listen to her, and argue with her, and love her until the day he dies, practically explaining what marriage is all about. By the end of the scene they’re engaged when he lifts her for a hug and they happily run toward the castle.

9. First kiss (S01E03 Kissed)

Even though Francis was reluctant at first, it took him only 3 episodes to express his adoration for Mary which was executed perfectly at the end of the episode when Francis tells Mary to marry another because he is worried his father won’t make his promise worth and let them marry anytime soon. He knows Mary needs a strong alliance for her country, so he tells her to find it in Portugal with another where it’s for sure it will happen instead of waiting for his father premission, knowing that this could damage his own country. He seals everything with a passionate kiss, and Mary’s surprised face tells it all.

8. Francis and Mary get back together (S02E22 Burn)

After very unlucky season for Francis and Mary, and a very painful season for their fans, they finally reunite in the season finale. After everything that happened and tore them apart, they spent most of the season separated, with Mary even finding comfort in the arms of another man, Francis’ cousin Conde. But, after Conde commits a treason and stages a coup, Mary is forced to chose between the two man she loves and she choses Francis, while taking down Conde. Then she asks him to make a choice with her, a choice to commit their hearts to each others no matter what and Francis responds with a kiss.

7. Mary tells Francis she is pregnant and loses the baby (S02E04 The Lamb and the Slaughter)

Equally happy and devastating episode of season 2 starts with a very happy news: Mary is pregnant and Francis couldn’t be more happy as he lifts her and spins her in the air as a respond to this happy news and says he’s never been as happy in his entire life. But, at the end of the episode Mary has lost the baby and it’s even more devastating to watch her put this horrible news on the side so she could be there for Francis and her friend Lola on their’s son christening. And as that wasn’t sad enough, after Mary tells news to Francis and cries in his arms, he then arranges dozens of lanterns for Mary, saying yet another adorable story from their childhood when they would sneak out and wait for the fireflies that would never come, but for him it was the waiting with her that mattered. As she opens the window and sees all the fireflies he arranged, he tells her she is his light, no matter what. I’m not crying, you’re crying moment, indeed.

6. Francis dies saving Mary (S03E05 In a Clearing)

Probably the most painful thing after seeing Francis die and then come back to life in the episode before is seeing him die once again, but this time forever, just one episode later. After having all the beautiful moments throughout the whole episode, Francis dies saving Mary’s life and they get to say a final goodbye as Mary holds Francis in tears while he tells her how much beauty she’s brought him. The flashbacks of their most important moments together don’t make it any easier to watch either, and by the end of the episode we're all screaming into void with Mary.

5. Stay with me dance (S03E03 Extreme Measures)

This is possibly the greatest musical moment of the show. Francis is dying and getting weaker and weaker by the moment, but he still has to keep appareances so that France wouldn’t look weak too. Mary is with him every step of the way, and when they get into a situation where they are to dance in front of everyone, with Francis’ condition getting worse, Mary takes the lead and they dance beautifully while instrumental version of Sam Smith’s Stay with me plays in the background. Mary saying the words just as the song reaches the Stay with me part to encourage Francis that he can do it just hits straight into the heart.

4. Mary chooses Francis and they marry (S01E13 The Consummation)

After fearing that their marriage could brought Francis’ death, Mary leaves with Bash and a love triangle between two brothers and a queen is born. And, after episodes of Mary being with Bash and falling for him too, she gets the information that she can in fact marry Francis without that being the reason for him dying, and it’s time for her to decide between the two brothers. She runs into Francis’ arms saying it’s always been him, and the result is one whole minute of just pure bliss when Francis and Mary marry and dance together in possibly the most beautiful scene of the show.

3. “Because I love you!” (S01E07 Left Behind)

In one of the strongest Reign episodes, stakes are high as king Henry is out of the country and the castle is overran by a man hungry for revenge. Catherine, Mary and Francis conduct a plan to get everyone out safely, but as plan goes south and Mary, her ladies and Cahtherine end up trapped in the castle with bad men, Francis comes to their rescue just in time. After that, Mary asks him why would he come back for her when it was a clear suicide, and he practially yells “because I love you” to her and makes all of our hearts stop, including Mary’s. After that they finally completely give into their emotions and make love for the first time.

2. Back to you scene (S01E01 Pilot)

Is there any scene on this show more iconic than the Back to you scene in the Pilot? I don’t think so. After Mary arrives at the French court after being away and not seeing Francis for years, the old feelings come rushing back to both Mary and Francis as their eyes lock while Mary is dancing with her ladies to iconic Back to you song by Twin Forks. As their childhood memories are shown as a parallel to leathers falling on them in the present, it is an intense moment as they look at each other with so many emotions.

1. Francis and Mary reunite in the afterlife (S04E16 All it Cost Her...)

After breaking our hearts in season 3 by killing off Francis and making us believe that was the end to Francis and Mary’s love story, Reign gave us everything we didn’t even know we needed - Frary reunion in the afterlife. After the hard life Mary has had, she met her end by Elizabeth in the show’s finale, but the last scene wasn’t out heart breaking once again seeing Mary being executed. No, instead Reign healed all of our broken hearts with one last Frary scene. They are once again young and in France, their home. They finally have forever to be happy toghether and can be free as they are no longer rulers with their countries to think of, but simply just a boy and just a girl, as they dreamed to be even back in season 1.

Fantastic story that makes good use of both source canons and also mythology. Knowledge of His Dark Materials is not necessary. There are a few grammar/word usage errors but don’t let that put you off—the story is so enjoyable it doesn’t matter. I’ve read it many times.

They say that nuance is lost over text, but Molly’s pain is very palpable here. A large part of this story is comprised of text messages, but the author writes well and the medium works here. Bit of a happy ending. Love this one!

A Bedtime Story for a Madman and a Queen by sillythings

This might be my favorite of all time. Hauntingly beautiful. The author’s portrayal of Jim is so good it’s stunning. The storytelling here is masterful, and spins stories within stories. It’s dark and loving and just wonderful. Strong Sherlolly theme in this one.

WIP. On the surface this is sort of a funny story. I smiled a lot reading this. On occasion, though, it delves into pathos, and it’s very effective. I like a bit of pain in stories and this delivers. Well-written and enjoyable.

WIP. Still in the early stages but I just love the setup here. Mystery? Paranormal? Epistolary writing? Count me in. Can’t wait to see what’s next.

Three hour later, Joss was in her car, sitting sideways on the driver's seat, dragging Molina's unconscious form into the passenger side in the fading daylight while her gun dug a new bruise into her hip.

- I had to Google how long it was safe for someone to be unconscious, I’m sorry Molina! I swear, he spends at least... one-third of the fic sentient. He and Carter get two separate conversations! She and John only get one! - I suck at writing case!fic, so I... shamelessly stole this fic’s background case from Elementary’s S01E02 “While You Were Sleeping”. - I have no idea when Reese told Carter his name; I hope his jumping the gun here doesn’t seem too OOC. (<-- a sentence that applies to the whole fic OTL) - Having just started my PoI rewatch, I feel like I’m really rusty with Carter’s voice!! Which is terrible because that’s the most important part!!! D: Constructive criticism on this point welcome! (And on all points really LOL) - I... feel like the only thing keeping this fic from being truly C R A C K is that I’m not writing Reese’s POV. That particular fic would basically, mortifyingly (for me, as the writer) be all OOC jealousy all the time. At least from Carter’s POV, his feelings can ambiguously fall on either side of the crack/sanity line. >_<

Visions and vengeance while the show treads water.

Gwen and Owen are running down the street in pursuit of an alien signal that Tosh is tracking, with Jack approaching via the roadways in the SUV. Tosh determines that their suspect is a man in a hoodie and Gwen is able to get close enough to snag the garment before the man escapes. Luckily, the device is in the pocket.

When she investigates it, the device causes the world around her to disappear. In a dream-like state, she sees a young boy carrying his possessions and wearing a tag stating that he is Tom Erasmus Flanagan. The boy says that he’s lost before the image fades, and Gwen tells her comrades that she’s just seen a ghost.

Back in the Hub, Tosh reviews the footage but sees no evidence of Gwen ever leaving the area. Jack orders a battery of database searches for Flanagan, but Owen is one step ahead with a phone book. Gwen and Owen visit the address and meet Eleri and her father. They have an alibi for the previous night, and while Gwen talks to Tom, Owen joins Eleri in the kitchen. Tom was evacuated from the East End in 1941 – he was eight years old – and sent to Cardiff. He was eventually taken in by a nice couple and never returned home.

As they leave the Flanagan home, Rhys calls Gwen and asks if she’ll be home tonight. Gwen is unsure and Rhys is upset. They return to the Hub and continue the investigation, determining (first) that the device is complicated nanotechnology and (second) that the thief is Sean “Bernie” Harris, a petty thief. They track him to Splott and find that Bernie has alienated everyone in the area. Jack tosses the device to Owen and taunts the team into working harder. As the team walks away, Owen is swept into another vision where he watches a woman named Lizzie Lewis in the 1960s. She’s assaulted by a boy named Eddie Morgan, dragged to the wall, raped, and murdered as Owen returns from the vision. He is shaken to his core.

The team returns to the Hub and digs into Lizzie’s history. Jack identifies the device as a quantum transducer, something that converts emotional energy into ghost-like visions similar to déjà vu. Owen wants to pursue Lizzie’s murder (which was never solved) but Jack tasks the team with tracking down Bernie instead. He sends Owen home to recover and takes Gwen to the shooting range.

After some practice with various arms and a somewhat rocky start, Gwen doesn’t do too badly. She checks her watch and decides to go home, wondering where Jack sleeps. He replies that he doesn’t. He also avoids the question of his loneliness. Gwen’s house is empty since Rhys has gone to a friend’s house to play poker, so she experiments with the ghost machine and some happy memories. Rhys comes home and the couple mends their bridges.

Meanwhile, Owen is stewing at home with the case files on Lizzie’s murder and a bottle of liquor. The next morning, he tracks Eddie to his current home on Prysse Avenue, uses a false identity as a gas company employee, and confronts Eddie about the murder. The old man angrily chases him out, and moments later Owen spots Bernie. After a humorous chase through the neighborhood – no one likes Bernie, so they point his pursuer in the right direction – Owen corners Bernie and takes him to a pub where Jack and Gwen catch up later.

Bernie stole the device from a storage unit and saw a vision of his own. His ghosts showed him a woman dumping a dead baby in the water, and he realized that he recognized the woman, but she gave him money to leave her alone. The team starts to leave before Bernie offers them the other half of the device, which Tosh assembles without much effort. They also take the money and the strange rocks that accompanied the device in the storage unit, but Gwen stops when Bernie tells her that the device showed him his death.

Gwen catches up with the team, eager to share the new revelation, but activates the device and sees a vision of the future: She’s holding a knife and covered in blood, Owen is dead, and she couldn’t stop it. Jack consoles her later in the Hub by telling her that it’s only a possible future.

Later that night, Tosh and Owen share a drink later and discuss Eddie Morgan. Eddie hasn’t left his house for years due to severe agoraphobia, and the team realizes that Bernie must have tried to blackmail Eddie. Meanwhile, Eddie calls Bernie, Gwen visits Bernie to console him about the vision of his death, and Owen reveals his earlier visit to Eddie’s house. The team converges on Bernie’s home.

Eddie overcomes his phobia and visits Bernie’s home, knife in hand. Gwen tries to calm Eddie down, but the man only spins up faster and blames women for making him turn bad. Jack and Owen wrestle Eddie down, and Owen threatens Eddie with the knife. Gwen talks him down and Owen hands her the knife, but Eddie rushes her and impales himself on the blade, committing suicide and fulfilling Gwen’s vision.

The team debriefs the situation at the Hub: Owen is glad that he didn’t kill Eddie. Gwen is shocked and feels guilty, and Jack gives Ianto the device for storage in the secure lockers. Jack takes Gwen topside to watch the sunrise as he helps her deal with her grief.

It was a pretty lackluster story with a paint-by-numbers pseudo-supernatural twist. Owen got some character development as a (sort of) white knight who tries to make people think that he doesn’t care, and Gwen continues to evolve in her new role as rookie, but not much else happens here. Any forward momentum they had after the last two episodes has pretty much stalled out with this tale.

Rating: 2/5 – “Mm? What’s that, my boy?”
