interestingly the only mention i can find of a monastery loquarium is (rendered "loquorium") in "the california padres and their mission" by charles francis saunders and joseph smeaton chase, a book in the public domain:
The Mission relics at Santa Inés are many and interesting. Besides those used in the present-day church services, and the beautiful old vestments that are in the sacristy, there is a considerable collection arranged for interested visitors in an interior room of the convento — a room formerly used as the loquorium, where daily, after dinner and after supper, the friars were at liberty to come to rest for an hour from their laboring and praying, and relax in human chat.
the next paragraph also mentions this room now housing relics "patiently got together from all sorts of places," including "from the earth of the surrounding fields as the plough turns it up"

Tips from an autistic teacher about communicating with education professionals
So, some context: I taught Primary for 1 year, and had lots of interactions with parents with all kinds of concerns about their kids. I also remember being in high school and college/university and being too nervous to approach my teachers/tutors with any problems I had until the situation was dire.
For those who don't work in education, I can appreciate how needing to speak to your child's teacher about something can be intimidating, especially if your and/or your child are neurodivergent. And if you are a student, it can be equally as scary.
It's true many teachers are overworked and underpaid, but the vast VAST majority would move heaven and earth to help you. However, there are lots of things you can do to help them to help you, so here are my top tips.
Tell them ASAP if there is a problem - alerting the teacher to a problem or concern as soon as it arises gives them the chance to nip it in the bud before it becomes a big deal. If there is a bullying concern or something you don't understand, they would much rather you told them straight away so they can do something about it than have you or your child suffering in silence for weeks or months. We are generally an observant bunch and are looking out for issues, but some things do fly under the radar. Even if it's not something they can do anything about straight away - like if you think your child is showing signs of autism or adhd but they mask heavily at school - they can bear this in mind and pass it onto other relevant members of staff so it is 'flagged' up for the future.
If your issue is complicated, be sure to put it in writing - chances are you have access to a messaging service or at least an email address. Even if you have raised your concern with the teacher face to face, having it in writing is helpful for both parties. It provides a record that the issue has been raised and passed along as appropriate, and it helps remind the teacher about what has been discussed so they don't end up forgetting about it among the million other things they have to do.
Be specific - it may seem obvious, but there is no point in having a casual chat and then throwing in a bombshell at the end. Make sure to give as much relevant detail as you can about what your issue is, and if you want to raise multiple concerns then it is doubly beneficial to put them in writing.
Think about what your desired outcome is and come with a proposed solution - this is a psychological thing, apparently, but people are more likely to be sympathetic to your concerns if you can demonstrate you have thought about how you would like it resolved. If you want your child put forward for an autism assessment, make sure you actually say this. If you know you are going to be late handing in an assignment but can give your teacher an alternative date you will hand it in, tell them this. I can't guarantee they will always be able to fulfil it, but knowing what you would like to change or happen makes it much easier to sort things out rather than just guessing.
IF THERE'S SOMETHING GOING ON OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL THAT'S HAVING A NEGATIVE IMPACT, TELL THEM!!! - I CANNOT stress this enough, especially when it comes to little ones or neurodivergent children who may have limited means of both communication and emotional regulation. Being hungry, tired, stressed etc can have an enormous impact on behaviour/ability to learn. Even a simple message or email giving the heads up your child has had a poor night's sleep because the house flooded or whatever and might be a bit grumpy that day can be a huge help to the teacher, who as a result of having this information will be in a better position to be patient with a child who is struggling. For bigger life changes such as divorce, birth of a new sibling etc, this is even more important so that your child's teacher and the school can, if necessary, put measures in place to support your child through this transition. Communication really is key.
Remember to be kind and considerate - teachers are humans and make mistakes like everyone else. Equally, there are many circumstances they have to deal with that are totally out of their control and frustrate them just as much as they do you. As I said at the beginning, the vast majority want to help you and/or your child in any way they can, and being kind can make what is a very stressful job just that little bit less.
So, there you have it! I hope these tips gave you an idea for how to communicate with teachers effectively.
Oh, here's 1 more bonus tip - if you have anything to ask that is more than just a quick question, be sure to schedule a meeting with the teacher to ensure they can devote enough time to deal with your issue. Catching them at the beginning or end of the school day generally isn't a good idea as they're very chaotic times and they likely have other meetings/appointments/deadlines they will be thinking about.
Your support is much appreciated xx

Just spent about half an hour working out my answer to the question, "so, if I were to regard the plot of Gravity Falls as part of a chess game played to put Bill in check...who would fill all of the roles?" Because this is obviously a sensible use of my time after midnight...Plus, by sheer coincidence, I actually have sixteen characters who can logically compose Team Good Guys! To demonstrate, with explanations below the cut now that I know how those work on this site:
Pawns: Filbrick, Caryn, Shermie, Shermie's wife/girlfriend/whoever Shermie had a kid with, Dipper and Mabel's parents, Robbie, and Pacifica.
Knights: Dipper and Wendy
Bishops: Fiddleford and Gideon
Rooks: Stan and Soos
Queen: Mabel
King: Ford
Those last two should not be read as implying any weird ships, because...ew. Rather, it's all in how their actions correspond to the relevant pieces/the fact that they are in fact arguably both ex-royalty (Ford's the ex-king of the Finger Dimension, one could interpret Jeff the Gnome's comments as meaning that Mabel was, briefly and on a technicality, Queen of the Gnomes before she busted out the leaf blower). As for the more relevant bits:
The information in Ford's head makes him a vital piece for Team Good Guys: if Bill extracts said information, the game's over. Ford is also very limited in his options (the piece can move in any direction, but only one square at a time) and is just as easily trapped into check by his own pieces - it's his attachment to Dipper and Mabel which nearly allowed Bill to pull off a ‘smothered mate’-like situation.
Mabel is a strong piece with a very respectable track record of violence toward Bill. She can also move in any direction in a very literal way (grappling hook!) and this ability is what gives her uncles time to execute the twin switch which 'won the game.' On which note...
I think I read that it's different now (full disclosure, I'm a lousy chess player), but at one point in the history of the game, castling rules allowed an unmoved King to swap places with one of his unmoved Rooks. The Rooks, meanwhile, are moving buildings that flatten pretty much all in their path. Seemed like a description anyone Stan ever punched would agree with. Soos could go here or as Knight II; I stuck him here because he takes over the same role as Stan at the end of the series (plus, you know it would make him so happy).
If Soos is with the Rooks, then Dipper and Wendy become the Knights. Look at them in Weirdmageddon I! And in general (Dipper was pretty much born not moving the same way as anyone else in the game: ‘ladder shoes’, anyone?), but in that episode, when the two of them work together, they go from "surviving out here, which is already impressive and indicative of unusual skills" to "have decimated Bill's ground forces by flipping Gideon and are gearing up to take on a magic trap directly." Plus, Wendy customarily carries an axe; if she wanted to, she could go very medieval on folks.
Speaking of medieval (sort of) - our Bishops, Fiddleford and Gideon. Aside from both being at least religion-adjacent in supplementary materials (Gideon reads Preacher's Digest and behaves like a televangelist, Fiddleford is specifically stated to make the sign of the cross when he steps over a grave), they also fit well enough with the incomparable Terry Pratchett's description of the role in chess: "Bishops move diagonally. That's why they often turn up where the kings don't expect them to be." Certainly both Fiddleford and Gideon end up in places Bill didn't expect them to be, and they both go the long way about accomplishing their goals, too, preferring manipulation and ranged tech (robots, science guns, proxies, etc.) to direct confrontations, though they will if they must and may well show slightly disturbing glee while they’re about it - rather like the mace-wielding bishops of yore, no?
Which just leaves our eight pawns: Filbrick, Caryn, Dipper and Mabel's parents, one set of Dipper and Mabel's grandparents, Robbie, and Pacifica. The first six fit the role well: they are the 'front line' which made initial moves (had kids, raised kids, screwed said kids up something awful on occasion) and allowed the more powerful pieces to 'develop' long enough to get to Weirdmageddon/have the mental health issues that create their circumstances at that time. Pacifica's season two arc also makes her fit nicely into the role of Promoted Pawn: at first, she may compete for everything as the 'face' of the Northwest family, but she has so little real power of her own that she is cowered by a bell. Later, though, after fighting her way through Lilliputtians and aiding in the capture of a Category 10 ghost, she breaks the bell conditioning and saves the town. During the endgame, she is in the right place at the right time to first get the sweater Mabel made her and then to realize it meant she was part of the Destiny Circle. I'd say she made it to the other end of the board.
And then there's Robbie. Who I just stuck in here because he wasn't cool enough to be Knight II and nothing else fit at all. Sorry, Robbie.

The story of the RAF Phantom who "asked" for refueling in flight of a KC-130 from Argentina
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 20/08/2023 - 15:13 in History, Military
The F-4 Phantom formed an important part of the Royal Air Force (RAF) combat aircraft force for more than twenty years and provided the British service with one of the most capable attack fighters in the world. Once, a crew of an RAF Phantom, as a joke, asked for fuel from an Argentine Air Force KC-130 flying over the Falklands.
Two versions of the Phantom with a Rolls Royce Spey engine went into service in the Royal Air Force. The FG1 (the version also used by the Royal Navy) in the role of interceptor and the FGR2 in the ground attack and in the tactical reconnaissance role in Germany.
From 1977, all the Phantoms of the British Royal Air Force were used ALMOST exclusively as interceptor fighters in the airspace of the United Kingdom.
Tumblr media
The following story titled "Surprise" appeared in Richard Pike's book, "Phantom Boys Volume 2".
"With the potential, as they say, to shoot in the foot, there was irony and surprise in the situation. But there it was, an important day, a day of new beginnings, a day of 1993 that was recorded in many diaries. When the colonel himself entered the crew room - a colonel who turned out to be big, mustachioed, exuberant - a sudden silence fell on the room. When squadron leader Archie Liggat, as commanding officer of Squadron 234, a unit of tactical weapons and advanced training in the RAF Valley in Anglesey, stepped forward, shook the colonel's hand and said: "May I introduce some of my employees and students, sir..." And as Archie went through the subtleties, he was aware that each move of his was under the scrutiny "Good weather, isn't it?" routines, he felt, deep down, the pressure of secondary agendas. Perhaps he fed thoughts that, despite the demonstration of joviality, the colonel could be hard, petty and selfish - not that Archie had anything against the subject personally, only that, given the circumstances, it was difficult not to feel more than a little confused by the process. And few would argue that the procedures were, to say the least, quite unusual.
It was three years earlier, on a day in October 1990, when Archie was a Phantom pilot based in the Falkland Islands, that the scenario was set up for the remarkable reunion that would take place, totally by chance, during the colonel's visit to Valley. On the one hand, it was by chance that Archie, along with his colleagues, was on rapid reaction alert service (QRA) on that specific day in the Falklands. The men were prepared to react, if necessary, while waiting in a special crew room next to a hangar with two fully armed Phantom FGR2s. On the day in question, Archie and his colleagues were informed of a special request from the Argentine government regarding a large section of Antarctic ice, part of the renowned Wilkins ice shelf, which detached and was adrift in the South Atlantic seas. The Wilkins ice shelf, evidently stable for most of the 20th century, began to fragment. Concerned about the effects of global warming, scientific researchers from Argentina were eager to make detailed observations of the air.
Tumblr media
As the aircraft to be used for these observations, a Lockheed C-130 Hercules operated by the Argentine Air Force (Fuerza Aerea Argentina or FAA), had limited range, the Argentines requested permission to fly over the Falkland Inner Conservation and Management Zone (FICZ). As this would be the first flight of this type by an FAA aircraft after the 1982 war, the subject was controversial. However, the UK government agreed to the flight on the condition that the C-130, when crossing the FICZ, was accompanied by two RAF Phantoms. To deal with language difficulties, Spanish-speaking air traffic controllers would be available at the Phantom base at RAF Mount Pleasant in East Falkland.
This is how the two QRA Phantoms took off that spring day in the Falklands to intercept, identify and escort the Argentine aircraft. The plan worked as planned and did not take long for Archie, as a pilot of the first QRA aircraft, to maintain the training on the left side of the C-130. When in position, he noticed that the Argentine aircraft, in addition to camouflage insignia and paint, was similar to the RAF C-130s of flight 1312 based at Mount Pleasant. The latter was modified to offer an in-flight refueling facility that the Phantoms occasionally used. While Archie and his navigator made a sentry on the left side of the Argentine, the other Phantom pilot maneuvered judiciously while his navigator took pictures. The Phantom crews did not make radio contact with the Argentine opposing numbers, although some polite nods occurred from time to time. With the C-130's cruising speed of less than 300 knots, the progress through the FICZ seemed, after a while, slow - in fact, strangely slow, actually tedious to the point that Archie started to get quite bored.
Possibly, at that point, Archie's thoughts may have wandered in different directions, including, perhaps, mental images of home, of his birthplace in Grantown-on-Spey, in the Scottish Highlands ... Suddenly, Archie had an idea; an idea he discussed with his navigator, which seemed quite amused with the absurd proposition. During the training, they discovered that the escorted aircraft was one of the two FAA KC-130s, a type of Hercules based on the U.S. Marine Corps variant used for in-flight refueling. Archie decided to accelerate his two levers to reposition the Phantom; he wanted to be fully visible to the Argentine cockpit crew. He then lowered his left hand of the two levers to the fuel panel below. With his eyes still watching Hercules, Archie's fingers carefully groped the switch of the in-flight refueling probe. The distinct shape of this switch was promptly identified. Now, when he operated the switch, Archie and his navigator heard the typical thuds and noises that indicated the movement of his flight refueling probe. When the device, normally leveled with the fuselage by the cockpit, left its housing, the movement signaled a standard silent procedural message interpreted by the aviators as: "I would like some fuel, please!"
Tumblr media
The response of the Hercules cockpit crew was immediate: the heads of both pilots turned to look at their escort. Meanwhile, several other crew members, with interrogative facial expressions, began to crowd against the side windows. The replica could be imagined:
“They're crazy!”
"How can we deal with these people?"
“They must be stressed!”
"It's a stratagem."
"No, it's just a joke. Let's play together. With this, one of the Hercules men smiled at the Phantom crew and made a positive sign. Thus encouraged, Archie maneuvered backwards to adopt the standard "waiting" position of replenishment. After a moment or two, to his astonishment, Hercules' refueling basket took a slight turn before starting to emerge from the hose drum unit. As the fuel line slowly stretched, Archie followed her back and began to move to a refueling position. At this juncture, however, the captain of Hercules must have decided that the prank had already gone too far: the hose bumped until it stopped, stopped and then was quickly rolled back into his accommodation. Archie has now eased his levers forward to resume his previous position in the Hercules cockpit. When he was there, he briefly lowered the oxygen mask to make an exaggeratedly taciturn expression. The reaction of Hercules' crew was intriguing: even more faces appeared on the side windows, all with wide smiles. Some shook their heads from side to side and shook their fingers as if they were a mischievous student.
Meanwhile, the captain of Hercules raised his cup of coffee in greeting, a sign that Archie interpreted as "no resentment". He therefore retracted his refueling probe and maintained a slightly broader formation as if indicating: 'Okay. It's agreed!' For the next hour, Archie maintained this position as the formation flew on the planned course that took the aircraft directly over the Mount Pleasant airfield and then towards the eastern limit of the FICZ. When there, Archie complied with the internationally agreed signal 'you are free to proceed' before giving a cheerful nod and moving sharply to the left as he headed back to Mount Pleasant.
Tumblr media
After landing, Archie and the other crew members were duly informed by intelligence officers who asked adequately intelligent questions. As usual, there were forms to fill out, documents to sign, do this and that to ensure a satisfactory bureaucratic progression, but in a short time, in the hustle and bustle of a hectic life, the incident began to retreat to the back of Archie's mind. In fact, three years passed before memory was awakened, three years during which he moved from Leuchars to the 74º Squadron at the RAF Wattisham in Suffolk, where, among other functions, he was the acrobatic exhibition pilot of the Phantom - the last type in the RAF. In the fall of 1992, coinciding with the transition from RAF Wattisham to the Army Air Corps, he was assigned to the RAF Valley as commanding officer of the 234º Squadron, a training unit whose motto 'ignem mortemque despuimus' may have instilled a sense of admiration in the student body. (especially when they learned the meaning - 'we
***
Perhaps this motto was also appropriate when issues related to Argentina arose, although, as it has been about ten years since the Falklands War, efforts were underway to normalize relations. As part of this process, a new Argentine air attaché was appointed, a colonel who was being introduced to staff at several Royal Air Force stations throughout the country, including RAF Valley. With the choice of Squadron 234 as one of the units to be visited, on the day in question employees and students lined up to receive their important guest. To greet the colonel, the officers' cafeteria had provided tea with adequate tea cups, cutlery, fine cookies, sandwiches, buttoons and everything.
When the colonel finally arrived, he turned out to be a great man, of an exuberant nature, who seemed to go well with a mustache that could have made the legendary 'Biggles' proud. To accompany the colonel, elegantly uniformed members of the aeronautical attaché's team were accompanied by a group of senior officers of the Royal Air Force. In contrast, Archie and his men wore their normal day-to-day flight suits. When Archie made the appropriate presentations, he was relieved to see that the colonel was an affable guy who talked freely with everyone present. Perhaps it was even more surprising, therefore, when the colonel suddenly stopped talking to look, stunned, at a badge he had just seen in Archie's flying costume. The badge, innocuous enough for Archie to think, revealed the achievement of 1,000 hours of flight in a Phantom.
Tumblr media
"Have you ever been to the Falklands?" asked the colonel. An embarrassed silence came down over the room.
“Yes, sir. On several occasions," Archie said, "although we called the islands something else." He looked nervously around the room. Some of the top officers of the Royal Air Force made an ugly face in disapproval.
"On several occasions?"
“Yes. I was assigned to fly in Phantoms.
"Interesting," said the colonel. After a break, he continued: "In fact, I flew there myself."
"You?"
“In fact. That's... in a way.
"Sir?"
“It must have been about three years ago. I was aboard a C-130 that was allowed to fly over the Falklands — the first FAA aircraft to do so since the war. We had to be escorted by two Phantoms, one of whom pretended to need in-flight refueling from our C-130." The colonel laughed and continued: "It was all a joke, of course. But he broke the ice, so to speak, and the captain of the C-130 was willing to play together to a certain extent."
Immediately, Archie waved to one of his students, whispered a message that made the student run to come back after a moment or two with Archie's logbook. Sneaking hurriedly, Archie found a specific page with a loosely inserted photograph. He extracted the photograph and showed it to the colonel whose face, while studying the photo, seemed at first shocked, then confused, amused and surprised. "Is this you...?" said the colonel. "Yes, sir. I was on duty that day - I was the Phantom pilot who pretended to need refueling in flight."
“My God...” The colonel stared at Archie and then, in a spontaneous act, patted him on the shoulder, shook his hand vigorously and grabbed him in a bear hug. Now, in a growing spirit of munificence, the colonel rummaged through his pocket to take out a leather bag that contained a medal from the Argentine aviation academy. Without further ado, the colonel solemnly fixed the medal on Archie's flying costume before, with his mustache bristled with pride, took a step back and greeted our gallant protagonist.
With this, the conversation in the room resumed while poor Archie, while struggling to recover from the momentary vertigo induced by such extravagance, was relieved to see that the group of senior officers of the Royal Air Force now seemed a little less sad. Maybe Archie felt a little dizzy, taken by surprise by the bizarre and unplanned experience. Was it, however, totally unplanned? Reflecting, Archie concluded that the colonel seemed, in some way, pre-prepared. If not, why carry such a medal anyway? Certainly not at the chance of finding some random individual who instantly needed one?
Tumblr media
Finally, when the colonel and his group made mention of leaving, he approached Archie to shake his hand warmly. “Goodbye, my friend. Please pay a visit to the Argentine air academy one day, huh?"
“Thank you, sir. That would be... Archie suddenly noticed the way the colonel was looking at him. When the colonel nodded and turned to leave, Archie got the clear impression that he knew all the time who Archie was. He could never be sure, of course, and as he watched the Argentine officer and his entourage leave, Archie realized that all that strange episode would have to remain one of life's little surprises.

SPOILERS AHEAD FOR GRANBLUE FANTASY'S WHAT MAKES THE SKY BLUE:
Granblue fans, WMTSB enjoyers - I wanna talk about Lucilius - or more specifically what could have been. I wanna talk about my thoughts because he's genuinely one of the most intriguing characters I've ever come across in media. (Please note: I have not finished GBVSR's story nor come anywhere close to where he shows up - thank you Story Mode update not working - so if I'm missing explanations for things by all means feel free to add it in the comments - I want to learn more.)
I've been sitting on a fic concept for a few days, and I've slowly started putting together a draft. It stems a lot from what we learn through raid quests and WMTSB - both Paradise Lost and 000. I'm not at all an experienced writer by any means, so I'm not sure the fic itself will ever truly get off the ground. But here's the concept:
An AU in which Lucilius, after his research is halted and the limiters are in place, turns against and actively undermines the High Council rather than God himself. Going right to the immediate source first before potentially upending the entire world. He's a scientist, a researcher first before anything else. I have a hard time believing that with the pragmatism he possesses that his descent into seeking oblivion within the events of WMTSB itself was nothing short of torturously slow. The kind of loathing that comes from watching your life's work be torn apart and reshaped into something unrecognizable by hands other than your own, while being forced to sit back due to someone else's fear. Sahar in 000 speaks of dreams, of fleeting thoughts with nothing to recall them by. Lucilius has encountered so much in canon that I imagine it would make any being - immortal or otherwise - dizzy and sick.
And I'd be pretty fucking jaded too if all of those things came together and landed on my head. Lucilius's current outlook had to start somewhere. No one is born with that level of hatred. No one is born so cynical. I fully believe that given the opportunity and the resources Lucilius would've been able to flip the High Council's entire world upside down without having to resort to dimensional obliteration. If any Astral we have met thus far would have the tenacity, it'd be him. Not right away though. Just as slow as his descent would've been. Sneaking around to look through records, hiding copies of his research in a million different places so even if the Council found one set they'd never find them all. Biding his time by using the Fallen Angels as a true information network, with ciphers and hidden travel routes and verbal codes to signal exactly what their plans are to each other and which hideout to use next.
To use the information gleaned from Lucifer's interactions with the sky to learn exactly where he has the best shot of not being found at any given time - by Astrals or skydwellers alike. Because god forbid a horde of skydwellers pre-War finds out there's a lone Astral and a bunch of primal beasts sitting in their backyard. And to not be afraid to leave the structure in flames before he goes, knowing he has everything he needs in the next one.
And Lucifer, dear Lucifer having to make the decision to stand against him once again. To be ordered by the Council to hunt Lucilius down after he goes on the run, to be the one to arrest him and carry out his sentence in a spectacle he never wanted to see. Belial, who narrowly escaped the conflict that erupted when they were finally caught on Lucilius's own orders and for once is powerless to do anything other than let it happen because he can't be seen. Who is well aware of the sorrow in Lucifer's eyes as the blade comes down and hates him anyway for it because why couldn't you just play along?
Sandalphon, who had heard months prior that there was finally a way that he could be useful, extended a hand by someone he never expected to receive more than dirty looks and harsh whispers from and practically bounding at the chance. The sheer betrayal striking through his core because when the operation goes down and he sees Lucifer on the battlefield surely the other wouldn't miss the wings and hair and armor he's been so familiar with?
Lucifer, who in the span of just a day lost everything. His confidante, his friend, and the light of his life when all the stress of his position makes the wings upon his back drag at his spine. And when Michael steps into the garden as Lucifer looks up at a sky that never felt so grey, giving the news that Sandalphon was there when the last hideout when down for a brief, short moment in comparison to his already long life (has it been so long?) he no longer possesses that shining brilliance he's so lauded for.
Anyway that's about as far as I've gotten in terms of planning and thought processes so let me know what y'all think. This is the first time I've done something like this so I'm interested in the feedback. As far as other writers and artists, if y'all wanna consider using any part (not the whole thing) of this just ask me first. My messages should be open and if not, leave a comment under this post and I will open them.

Their Emergency Course (premium package) was my first purchase on my way to a pretty good TOEFL score. However, unfortunately, it is not the last or the best. Let me explain. Among the benefits I can name:
Structured and short information about all the content of the TOEFL test (paid, however, can be found in their YouTube videos for free);
Templates for speaking and writing sections for basic and advanced levels;
Practice tests with answers and their explanations (some of them in open access on YouTube in old videos);
Comprehensible design of the website and cool colors;
Examples of Q1 for the speaking section (for free);
Newsletters with special hacks and news from ETS (for free)
Josh's charisma (can be found everywhere :)). However, if you use this website with the materials from their YouTube channel, you will quickly realize that you've wasted your money. First, throughout all the videos, Josh McPhearson repeats that it's OK to pass the same test more than one time after, for example, two weeks. And that was a trap! I passed approximately two or three tests (in sum from the website and from the YouTube channel), trained some specific types of questions from reading and listening in the separate section on their website, and then I simply couldn't find the completely unfamiliar test, despite the fact that I was promised to have 6 complete practice tests in my package. So, the limited number of practice tests was an outrageous fact for me because it seemed like some of them were open-access on YouTube. Moreover, I think that this emergency course in general doesn't give you much more information about the test than their YouTube videos. So, basically, I paid mostly for templates, and that wasn't a rational decision, even if a 50% discount was taken into account. Don't be enchanted and blinded like me; use only their free materials. I didn't try their group classes and evaluations, but Emergency Course is 100% not worth your time and money.
2. Best My Test
Since I needed more practice and more tests, I started to search for other complex solutions where I could train all the TOEFL sections. I found this website, and after reading some articles about it, I began a free trial. It gives you an opportunity to pass the sample test, which is a shortened version of an actual test. After trying it, I was on cloud nine because it was exactly the thing that I was looking for.
First and foremost, the experience is not the same but really similar to the official TOEFL test. You can see the instructions, the buttons, the interface for recording your voice, the way the text in reading and questions to it are placed, the writing interface, which is also close to reality, and the most important is the timer. That was the core reason why I decided to pay for this.
Another benefit is, obviously, the availability of a huge number of practice tests with recorded statistics of your success in every section and question type (for reading and listening).
The theoretical materials are also included. It is especially useful when you see that some type of question is your weakness based on the statistics of your success. You catch it, jump into the corresponding lesson, learn some strategies, and train.
Templates and explanations for speaking and writing can be found. Moreover, the evaluations of your speaking and writing by humans and AI are included in the Custom and Premium packages. From my own experience, AI evaluations are pretty accurate, as they rated my speaking at 21 points and I gained 22. And writing reviews from experts was also full of insights and powerful advice. +/- There are also vocabulary and grammar materials, but I didn't have much time, so for me, these materials were uneffective. And finally, maybe for some readers, the textual form of theoretical material will not be comfortable, so I consider this aspect of Best My Test a disadvantage. However, they already made videos for certain lessons. Overall, Best My Test was a treasure for me, without any doubt. I regret that I found it too late (it was 2 weeks before my exam).
As you can see, these websites cause lots of strong feelings in me; however, I appreciate both of them because I have learned not only how to take TOEFL but also have seen a real picture of our world. The beautiful, loud, and charismatic is often empty. And the real treasure is often much cheaper and kept silent. Stay tunned :)

Note
Do you think that a quirk could be similar to comic but instead the user speaks backwards like Zatana from DC. To make it not as completely broken as in the comics in addition to the voice strain equaling the scale maybe have the effectiveness of the effect be tied to how clearly the words are spoken (when heard after being recorded and played backwards) so the user has some control over how the result is shaped based on the words they use, so saying “Dome Shield” backwards would form a glowing bubble around themselves but if they wanted to place it over a person they would say “Dome Shield Around _____” and the target would then be covered. While the idea seems is a little broken in terms of variety of things it can do I figured it could be more balanced since speaking backwards is not only incredibly difficult on its own but trying to sculpt sentences to fit a variety of potential scenario is nearly impossible on the fly, while the user probably would primarily remember a few specific words or phrases with training focusing on their ability to retain and recall information. Trying to use anything more than one to two words would severely weaken the quirks effectiveness when quick responses would be necessary and could provide an incredible level of difficulty to the power to someone more inexperienced. While it doesn’t have the onomatopoeia limits like comic I think that the power and scale of the quirk should be much smaller in comparison even under perfect conditions.
Yeah, no, that really can't work. That is way too absurdly broken. You can't balance a power where the user can just say whatever they want and have it happen, as opposed to "Comic" which is limited to sound effects. It's not even like the drawback can hold it back. It's not that hard to learn reverse speech and that's all you'd need to know to make this work. It's not even like you need to learn a lot of phrases it for it either. There's plenty of single words you could get away with for a power like this. I would suggest going with another idea.

Thrift Shop Vikings premise, part 2
@atypicalacademic, @hoochieblues, @motherofqups
The plot edition....
Let’s go back to that map. Specifically, this part of the map. See that nice river basin, surrounded by mountains? This is our stage. I am quite terrible with geographic names. For the moment, we’ll refer to this as the Riverlands. The relatively isolated Riverlands are divided into three principal kingdoms. The real world model is the British Isles post the decline of the Roman Empire, because we definitely needed another fake Britain. Culturally, it's a backwater, but not “barbaric.”
Tumblr media
The economic system is primarily agrarian. The more mountainous regions do engage in some amount of mining and metalwork, but the depths which have to be reached to acquire ore limits this activity. Primary exports are animal and plant fibers, a limited amount of metals, and paper, which isn’t really relevant at this stage. Both kinds of hemp are popular crops and the fun kind is the ‘cash crop’ so to speak.
The surrounding mountains limit outside incursions. The past 2-3 generations have been remarkably peaceful and cooperative within the Riverlands with all the primary ruling families intermarried to a greater or lesser extent. Brivonia (highlighted), in particular, has developed solid economic ties with trading cities along the definitely Not!Mediterranean-esque coast. They have enough goods people want to make it worth the effort of travel, but not enough to bother with invading for land or wealth. (Assuming you’re one of the significantly wealthier countries to the south.)
All of the above leads to a high degree of complacency regarding defense. And the people of those islands? Yeah, they’re a bit short on land resources for farming (did too good of a job getting those population numbers back up). About forty years ago, this might have been solved quite amicably, as there is more arable land than what is being used in the Riverlands. Unfortunately for the Riverlands, about thirty years ago power within the islands was consolidated by a female alpha named Synnove, who believes that she’s rediscovered the old, true gods and is destined to conquer on their behalf until she reaches the point where the sun rises over the ocean. She has a very high charisma stat and truly believes in her bullshit. Combine that with inadequate resources on the island themselves as motivation for people who aren’t entirely sure about this whole ‘old gods’ thing and fun times can be had by all.
Brivonia is targeted because Synnove, et. al., know that they are in a weak position defensively and were further weakened by two waves of plague in the past six or so years. The relative security of the river basin is also seen as a good place to build a base of support on the mainland, build up resources, and gather information about the geography and politics further inland. (And Synnove is just crazy enough that she might believe she’s going to live until her destiny is fulfilled, so while she wants to get moving, she’s willing to play a long game.)
And this, dear reader, is how Evyn, Prince of Aldenchester, ends up having definitely seen better days because “No surrender, we die like men” only works when you’re consistently classed as man.
...record scratch... Now we’re going to back up again...
Evyn has spent the twenty-odd years since he could form coherent sentences trying very, very hard to NOT BE PRECIOUS. This is very hard when one has six siblings between six to seventeen years older than oneself and then there was another six-ish year gap before the actual baby of the family was born. It is further complicated when one is an omega and therefore, by default, precious. (Two successive wives in this scenario, but the older children actually quite like their stepmother, who had the good sense to let them define the relationship.) Evyn is also the clever, conniving sibling. Not the one you actually want to leave alive to use as a puppet, but how was Synnove supposed to know that?
Evyn is also in many respects, the best connected of the siblings because he spent several years studying in the southern cities. (And he’s a grade A nerd, so studying did happen; along with a lot of ‘frivolity,’ as one does in one’s late teens and early twenties when far from home.) He was recalled home when his father died and has since largely been trying to put off an arranged marriage by being incredibly useful to the eldest brother on the administrative side of running a kingdom.
He also briefly crossed paths with Sindre, who of two sons Synnove has with her, several years, without either one knowing who the other actually is, and rather liked the big, sweet, slightly sad, sailor who was contemplating running the fuck away from whatever was going on in his life. So when he gets the ultimatum of “you’re either letting one of sons take you as a mate, or I’m going to kill in a very creative fashion,” a very clearly extremely pissed about this entire situation Sindre is the obvious best of the bad choices. (To the extent that anyone other than Synnove has any choice in this scenario.)
Sindre (Asdason, sometimes referred to as Synnovarson) would prefer to be a gentle giant in peace. He is one of Synnove's older children, who she sired on a male omega, Asdi, who was married/mated to her during her conquest of the islands themselves. Sindre's grandfather had enough sway to keep both Sindre and Asdi within his settlement. (Asdi, as a male omega, has specific religious duties associated with protecting the boundaries of the settlement, death rituals, etc.) Sindre recognizes Synnove's depravity, but he has always believed there is nothing he can do about it. She controls Sindre because he believes, correctly, that if he challenges her or even simply breaks away it will be his family and his community that pays the price. He could be described as in a constant state of low key dissociation.
Much of Sindre's internal conflict boils down to pressure to be ‘manly’ or ‘alpha’ and the very meaning of those concepts. His grandfather and Synnove are opposing models. He feels inadequate to meet his grandfather's expectations. Other themes are honor/dishonor/atonement for what he has and hasn't done. Sindre is religious, but his religiosity has been picked up entirely from Asdi. Polytheistic, a touch of animism, a lot of superstitious beliefs. The injunction “Do not offend the gods” is real enough to him that he does somewhat fear Synnove's, even though he doesn't buy into her claim that they are supreme, and he quite frankly thinks they are cruel and unworthy of worship. Worship and fear are distinct.
Synnove thinks that ‘giving’ Evyn to Sindre will give her more control over him.
Now, dear readers, I hope we have a premise for the plot.
TMI/full confession: There’s some kink meme out there with conquering warlord/whoever they just vanquished as a prompt. That notion plus the madness of Nanowrimo are how we ended up here. Somewhere, at some point in fictional character land, Evyn, Sansa Stark, and June Osbourne are asked to leave the same therapy group because they are all a little too into revenge.

More Abraxasverse Titan Headcanons
Have a big post I’ve been mulling about in the works regarding the Makers, Ghidorah being made in resemblance of something their enemies feared, Gigan, and some adapted anime trilogy stuff - but until I can work up the courage for it, here are some more Titan headcanons:
- After Megalon resurfaces and is (barely) repelled thanks to Ladon and the other Defender Titans, it’s quite common for him to either take to resting in a certain spot for a while, randomly wandering and observing the massively changed world, or simply disappearing in the Hollow Earth for a while. And despite the fact he’s no longer on an active warpath, all of the other Titans are either somewhat panicked or worried when he comes by, with many even choosing to leave and go anywhere else until he leaves. Many of them have heard stories of the fabled War God and would rather not be placed on the other end of his drills.
- A few people at Monarch (and some outside of it) have started to notice and question the increasing trend of people getting turned into Titans and are drawing all kinds of (mostly erroneous) conclusions from it. Mothra is deeply amused, but is content to let them speculate for now.
- Despite his propensity for total gibbering insanity, Gigan is quite capable of being logical or even philosophical when he wants to be. Many of the scientific advancements, discoveries, research logs, and more that the Fleet have access to were made by his hand. It’s somewhat common to find him speculating over new data regarding the Titans and civilizations of the various worlds the Fleet encounters and destroy/enslave.
- Bagan was a known threat by the Gods in the Abraxasverse such as Megalon and Mothra, though one they knew only the vaguest things about due to infrequent and short-lived manifestations throughout the cosmos, and the rare case of a spiritually aligned Titan diving too deep into the astral spaces without a buffer and dying in agony whilst muttering its name. Mothra knew a bit more about Bagan thanks to communing with the Mother Dark regularly, but not quite enough to say with any certainty as to WHAT it was - in fact, most of that information came across as heavily “censored” or intentionally limited, as though it was specifically designed to protect whoever received it from the truth.
To other Titans, they only know of Bagan through what few encounters they had with Titans who died in the throes of madness whilst speaking of it or from their very, very rare encounters with Bagan-worshiping cults (who were usually swiftly exterminated by Mothra and Megalon were they could find them). Some Titans would even mention a general indiscernible feeling of dread and terror in these situations, but could never determine the cause. Eventually, it sort of became a bit of scary story to spook younger Titans with and by the time Ghidorah came, much of what they DID have on it was lost or forgotten.
- Assimilation!Mechagodzilla/Desghidorah basically ends up tailing Abraxas around most places, and swiftling living up to the title of being their bratty little brother. Abraxas goes from finding it almsot endearing to being completely tired in record time, and the San half frequently wonders if this is what it was like for Ichi when they were still Dorats. It is a rather frequent sight to witness Abraxas basically manhandling or dragging their ‘brother’ around after he does something especially stupid. Monarch has a betting pool on what sort of shenanigans Ren will get up to on a given day and how long it will take Abraxas to find out.
- Zilla Junior is one of the very few amongst the Defender Titans who actually fully 'gets’ human idioms and phrases of speech due to his exposure to his dad and his co-workers basically since birth. He frequently jokes and bonds with Abraxas, Assimilation!Mechagodzilla, Biollante!Maddie, and a few others over in-jokes that basically only they get. He also gets along pretty well with Ladon and Leo.
- Matango exists somewhere, basically being a gigantic (and sentient) parasitic ecosystem sustained entirely by latent Hollow Earth energy. Nobody likes it and it was known to infect and eat Titans from the inside-out if they had the misfortune of stumbling across it. It has reawoken and is slowly attempting to spread its way to the mainland. Biollante!Maddie is immune to its infection, but merely interacting with it just feels wrong to her senses.
---
Ooh, I’d be interested to see those headcanons of Ghidorah and the Makers and Gigan... but no rush, take your time with them.
Heh, Megalon doesn’t even have to do anything to scare people shitless. At least he’s chilled out some after getting things out of his system, though I wonder if he feels disappointed or even saddened by the modern state of warfare; gone are the old glory days, in its place something colder and dispassionate. One might’ve never expected to see an old war god look depressed... but maybe modern humans can still pleasantly surprise him at times. Also maybe it’s because 2014′s tenth anniversary is coming up but I just imagined Megalon hearing about what Ford did during the MUTO attacks and is struck with a bolt of inspiration and respect. “HERE... IS A MAN... OF THE EARTH!!”
Indeed, Gigan is Albedo Piazzolla-tier crazy, in that he’s not really a one-note stereotypical violently vicious psychopath. He’s frighteningly cultured, and upon making landfall on Earth it won’t take long for him to make almost coherent cultural references, philosophical and religious allusions and bizarre figures of speech that might barely be relevant to the current situation; he can even be funny at times.
Have I mentioned how much I dig Bagan being an eldritch abomination? He might just replace Destoroyah as an AbraxasVerse final boss...

Where’s EFF? Why EFF Is Sometimes Quiet About Important Cases and Issues
When legal issues light up the Internet, people turn to EFF for answers. Whether it’s attacks on coders' rights, overreaching copyright claims online, or governments' efforts to censor or spy on people, we are often among the first to hear about troubling events online, and we're frequently the first place people turn to, both for help and for a broader understanding.
So why are there times when we’re quiet about something big that is happening around digital rights?  Why are there times when we only say general things and don’t take a firm position, drill down into specifics, or provide the legal analysis that we are famous for? We know it can be frustrating, and can lead folks to jump to conclusions that we don’t care, or aren’t watching.
But most of the time, that’s not the case. Instead, we are being quiet or vague for one of three reasons: to protect the people who have asked us for help, because of a specific court requirement, or because we’re investigating and putting a strategy into place. Quite often, it’s some combination of those.
First, and most of the time, we are protecting the folks who have reached out to us for help.  The legal protections for attorney/client communications and attorney work product allow lawyers and their prospective or existing clients to speak frankly with each other and to honestly evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of their cases. But these communications and notes must be kept strictly confidential in order to remain protected.  If the confidentiality is broken by either the lawyer or the client, the person or a person's attorney can be required to reveal their communications, legal strategies, and evaluations to their opponents. The stakes here can be very high, since that can include the opposing lawyers in a civil case or prosecutors who can put them in jail. Breaching these privileges can seriously hurt the people who ask us for help and undermine our chances of winning a case, so we are very careful to avoid doing so. Indeed, we have strict ethical duties as lawyers to do this.
Many times, there are multiple people seeking our help, and we need to take time to investigate and decide if we can help them. Even when we cannot, or we cannot help all of them, we almost always take steps to find them other lawyers. And even if we ultimately don’t represent someone, we often learn potentially privileged information as we help find them lawyers. So during this sensitive period, we often stay quiet or say things that are more general and that do not risk the legal or factual status of anyone who has reached out to us for help.  Once they are safely in the care of other lawyers, we can usually talk a bit more freely, but often still need to keep some things confidential to preserve the privilege.
Second, at times courts or laws limit our ability to speak. EFF’s work combating National Security Letters (NSLs) is a good example. We had to hide our work representing CREDO Mobile, Cloudflare and earlier, the Internet Archive, as we worked to free them from the gag orders that surround NSLs.  In the case of CREDO and Cloudflare it took years before we could reveal our relationship, which meant that we could not comment as specifically as we would have liked to on a number of things related to the case, and on the overarching issue. This led to many awkward and frustrating conversations with EFF members, as well as with reporters, and even members of Congress.
In general, we press as hard as we can to get the legal proceedings made public, especially for cases involving important personal privacy and free speech implications. In nearly all court-ordered or law-required gag situations so far, we have ultimately been able to get the court records unsealed.
Finally, there are times when we are simply not finished investigating a case or situation to determine whether to take it, or are taking the initial steps to put a strategy into place. Here’s a page outlining some of the things we consider when making those decisions. This often involves not only gathering background information, but also conducting a legal and technological analysis of the situation. In short, while EFF is often not going to have an immediate hot take on a situation that EFF is directly involved in, when we do speak we will be technically and legally accurate. Where we can, we will tell you where things are going and should go in order to protect the Internet.
While working through this process, the worst thing we could do is to talk publicly before we put a legal strategy in place, understand the technical details, and solidify our role.  This is especially true when the legal situation is in flux, as when emergency legal relief is sought, or when some of the people potentially involved have not yet been notified or identified.
However, none of this should keep EFF members, the press, or the public from emailing us at [email protected] when something is happening that potentially requires EFF's involvement. EFF members and the general public are an essential part of our early warning system – crowdsourcing that helps us have a much broader view of what’s going on, and where the important cases are occurring.
But we hope you will understand if we answer your call or email with limited detail or if we hold back from commenting extensively in the press, on Twitter or other social media, or on our blog. Feel free to point others to this post if they raise concerns. Just because we’re silent or give answers that seem incomplete in public doesn’t mean we don’t care or aren’t working furiously on the issue.
We believe strongly that everyone’s rights online should be vigorously protected, and sometimes that requires us to be silent.

Career Change Update #2
Alright, it’s been another two weeks so I’ve told a lot of important people in my life the plan and made some changes.
I told a few friends 1-1 to practice and was met with a lot of support and positive reception. They are sad that I’d be gone for a while, but they all thought it was really fitting for me and thought I would do well. Told my parents and siblings who were also supportive although also sad that I’ll be gone for sometime. Definitely worries my mom but not enough to try to hold me back. Told my big group of friends and they had the same feelings. I was really touched by the support and encouragement.
Importantly, one of the friends I informed is Chinese and she was able to share some good perspective and insight. She is very practical and methodical, and she suggested I work to put something more concrete on my resume during my experience in China. She suggested either getting a Master’s degree or trying to get a job working abroad. I don’t feel super confident that I’d get the type of experience I want abroad if I were working a job. Esp bc I don’t speak Chinese now so I likely would spend most of my days speaking English (this was also an objection she had to the idea of me teaching English).
So at this time, I’ve decided to pursue the idea of getting a Master’s in Translation. Then, I’d be able to enter my new career with some level of training and certification. As I understand, since I’d be studying in China, their program would primarily focus on English->Chinese translation, but I believe there will be enough crossover to justify it. Plus, I imagine, I’d be able to find a lot of common ground with the other translation students. I hope we’d be able to meet in the middle and consequently aid one another in our mutual pursuit of understanding each others’ language better.
The universities I am most seriously considering are East China Normal University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Both universities have Master’s programs in translation, decent information available on their website, very good reputations, and are located in Shanghai. Costs for these programs are also much cheaper than in the States and both have really good government scholarships available. They don’t seem to have specific parameters for what type of students they award the scholarship to, aside from being healthy and not having a criminal record. I had decent grades in college so hopefully that will help. I plan to apply for the Fall 2024 semester so I’m also thinking they may still(?) be low(?) on applications but that’s complete guessing.
My friend’s parents live in a smaller city in northern China and are very willing and excited to potentially host me. As a result, my friend has been suggesting that I apply to a university in their city (limited options and I don’t think they have my major) or in Beijing, which is only a few hours away so I could visit them often. And as nice as that is, part of this adventure is strongly rooted in not being around people I know or feel responsibility towards. I love the people I’m around and my friends parents seem super cool, but these are the kinds of things that would just sit in the back of my head and weigh me down a bit I think. Maybe not, but I think this is something I want to do very much on my own. At least in terms of my living situation? Maybe it doesn’t make sense but it’s how I feel. (See last full paragraph at the end for more details)
Also Shanghai just seems cooler than Beijing. If being a translator doesn’t work out, I could then get a job as a representative or liaison for a company and my feeling is that Shanghai is more of an international business hub than Beijing, which feels like it might be more of a political hub (obviously?). Shanghai seems more of like a young people’s place with more cool things to do. Also it’s warmer which might be cool.
However some of the upsides to Shanghai might also be downsides. Since it is a very international city, my friend said that I might have difficulty practicing Chinese with people there. She said many people will speak English and very strongly want to practice their English with me rather than let me practice Chinese. I’m in support of balance and tradeoff, but it is important that I get to practice Chinese. She said she knows a lot of foreigners who have come to China and not learned Chinese. However, I feel that Beijing would be pretty much this same in this regard. Plus, in either place, my classes will be taught in Chinese so even if I speak some English in my day to day, the majority of my day will be in Chinese by necessity.
Secondly, while I really like the idea of a warmer climate, it makes me a little nervous. I’m from a temperate mountainous climate with all four seasons. This is a tiny concern compared to all other things, but I don’t want to be super uncomfortable in the environment if it’s sweltering hot and there are tons of mosquitos and bugs. Like, I know it’s more tropical, but is it going to be like Florida and super humid all the time? I’m sure I could adjust even if this were the case, but I would like to know.
I’ve begun to make more concrete preparations for the adventure as well. For one thing, I don’t speak Chinese well enough to take classes in it. (Especially since the entrance requirement is HSK 5 with a 210+ score or HSK 6 with a 180+ score.) Despite almost a year on Duolingo, I have only a few phrases in my repertoire. I’m not confident I could even pass HSK 1 at this point. Maybe, but probably not. And as inspired as I am, I know I cannot make all the progress I need to make on my own. So I signed up for a private tutoring course to learn Chinese with a native speaker and I have my first trial/evaluation class tomorrow, which I am excited for. If my Chinese still isn’t good enough in time (a very likely possibility), the Chinese government scholarship does offer a year of language learning at the university prior to beginning my studies. But I’d have to get the scholarship (probability unknown) and I’d have to be in China for 3 years rather than 2 (not a deal breaker and would be really cool, but longer than I’d liek to be away).
Lastly, I did end up telling my boss about my long term plan. He was very surprised and he wasn’t super pleased. However, he does want me to do what makes me happy. He was worried that my performance may decline since I’m not planning to be with them long-term anymore (esp. since I’m in leadership), but I know I need to work hard so I can get bonuses to pay for the upcoming adventure. We had a second conversation about my current position that didn’t go as well. Part of it was him trying to convince me that my current position could give me the things that I want in a career, and we could make some changes to get that desired result. And part of me believed it for a bit. But then I went back to work today and was reminded of how I feel while I’m at work.
I feel like I’ve perfected energy management in being able to put on a happy and excited face when I need to run meetings. I even got some personal bad news this morning and still ran good meetings today, despite being low on sleep and having travelled all yesterday. But that doesn’t mean I don’t dread the meetings beforehand and feel even more drained afterward. I’ll even say that it was a bit of a rude awakening for me to realize that my sincerity and energy in my meetings and conversations hasn’t really changed even since I’ve made these career change plans. It’s making me question whether I was ever really excited about what I do.
A lot of the things I’ve done in my life up to this point were determined by what “made sense” or even what my friends were doing. I chose the college I went to because I was familiar with it and because my brother and my friends were going there. I didn’t really have a plan past wanting to go to college. I studied international business it required me to study abroad. I did not pursue linguistics because that school didn’t offer it and I didn’t want to do go to grad school (lol). I took my current job because I’d been working with them throughout college, and they offered me a full time job.
I’ve taken a lot of pride and maybe put too much of my identity in being a good friend. Now, a several of my close friends are married or hang out for “guys night” and so I find myself a little bit alone. I’m still very grateful to have the friends I have, but since they rely on me less, I spend less time with them. Ultimately, I think this is a good thing because now I need to make my own decisions without regard for what others are doing. And I’m excited to work on things that I have a genuine passion for so I can be genuinely excited when I share my life and experiences with them.
Really long post so it’s mostly public journaling/void screaming, but I’ve organized some questions in case anyone made it to the end and has insight or encouragement to share. Might make a separate shorter post for these questions later.
1.) Any opinions/insight on East China Normal University or Shanghai Jiao Tong University? 2.) Opinions/insight on cultural experience of Beijing vs Shanghai? 3.)  Do you think people will be willing to talk to me in Chinese? (Beijing or Shanghai) 4.) Opinions/insight on Shanghai climate? 5.) Insight on applying to Chinese universities or scholarships? 6.) General insight on going to grad school? (bonus points if it was a foreign esp, Chinese grad school, but I’m open to any and all insights) 7.) Insight on studying translation/becoming a translator?
P.S. On an unrelated note, I’ve learned through some research and talking to another friend that some of the toilets in China are squat toilets. I just can’t figure out in my brain how this will work (as a girl) without making a huge mess. I’m sure I’ll be able to figure it out quickly through research (hopefully with trial and no errors). Obviously, many cultures have been doing this for a long time, and I’m actually pretty sure it’s healthier for you that sitting toilets. I just wanted to add this silly comment at the end so that I can look back and laugh about how silly my apprehensions were.

Pentiment Achievements Guide 100%
Whilst I have included the names of the 7 secret achievements, I have not included the achievement icons in order to limit plot spoilers. Please note that I have organised the 41 achievements in chronological order, but it is not possible to unlock all achievements in a single playthrough. Some achievements require different backgrounds/studies, of which you can only pick one, and some achievements in Act I will lock you out of others. Where applicable, I have noted these instances. KEY: Section Heading The section within the Act from which these achievements can be unlocked. They are named after the main quest of that day/s. * = Achievements which can only be achieved with a certain Background/Study, chosen near the beginning of the game. Throughout the Acts 3 Achievements can be obtained outside of specific Acts:

Tumblr media

While the Rapscallion background is not required, it can make getting this achievement a lot quicker and easier. (Prefacing this to say that I'm not trying to convince you to move from neutral to pro transandrophobia- i think you being neutral is ur right and I can definitely understand why you are neutral. Just wanted to state my own perspective as a trans man, esp. As a trans man of color. Feel free to delete if necessary!)
I'm personally pro transandrophobia as a term because just as Trans Women have unique experiences due to their intersection of being Women and being Trans, and Black Trans Women experience a particularly unique blend of issues due to being Women who are Trans and black, Trans men also face a unique set of issues. Of course these issues can vary depending on where Trans men live, what their race is, how well they pass (as BS as passing is as a concept)and other factors, but so too might a Trans Woman's experience of transmisogyny/transmisogynoir vary based on similar criteria. Until recently, I've felt that there has been a major lack in information/discussion of transmasc specific issues, especially as a black Trans man. I've always felt like the specific intersection of transness and agab of transmasculinity causes unique issues combining misogyny and transphobia that isn't the same as transmisogyny. On top of that, Trans men of color like myself have the added issue of racism, adding to the bigotry stew we face. imho there just hasn't been adequate language to describe these issues until the introduction of transmisandry followed by the (more apt imo) term transandrophobia. I feel like this term adds to the toolkit we need to break down the systemic and societal issues we face. Ofc this is just my personal perspective, but I feel like the transphobia, misogyny, racism, and homophobia I face varies greatly from the same issues others face due to my identity, and I feel like discussing transandrophobia helps Bring light to how differently Trans men may be affected by these issues.
I'm not sure if I'm making sense, and apologies if my thoughts are all over the place, but hopefully this adds a perspective that others can see and take into account in the conversation surrounding transandrophobia...
I felt the same with lack of discussion around the issues trans men face. And I've thought about how I can make many shallow excuses, but overall I think I simply don't know enough about what's going on to speak on it.
I'm only 21, and what you get from everyday interaction with other trans people in activist spaces when learning about 20+ years ago in written history is limited if not non existent. Much of it focuses on a broad view that would be put through the individual lens of the historian or the person recording it, and there aren't many of those people. Basically, I can't relate to what I've learned of queer history back to this because the most queer history we have with trans men is "look, a trans man, or a possible one" and nothing about theories or activism from other trans people. This also applies heavily to trans women. So what we end up with is a cisnormative lens of what gender and how one gender is oppressive against the other, without much solidly believed theory from actual trans people.
This is part of what transandrophobia does. Its taking the issues of being men and having masculinity, but not as what we expect in a cisgender world, and the struggles that come with it. This can possibly applied to men in other minorities, like Black men or in my case disabled men, but much of that I've seen is surface level ("oh, look how masculinity hurts these groups in different ways" rather than "so how about we theorize how we see structural gendered oppression through this"), and that would be my responsibility to find out more for comparison about how this can work out.
I think transandrophobia has potential to finally take "but what about men?" And actually make it productive in the examination of gender rather than anti feminist nonsense. But what it seems to do as of currently is focus on the inner LGBTQ+ community more than anything, especially trans women for some fucking reason (transmisogyny, blaming them for hypervisibility), rather than the cisnormative societies that mainly hurt us.
Tumblr media
Like, the other day in the gay trans men being called fujoshis post, someone added these tags. I never mentioned trans women once. I've always focused more on the experiences of trans men because I am one, but the fact that I talk about it now and shade is thrown at trans women is incredibly worrying.
And what I said there is probably inaccurate because right now it's so new and there hasn't been a common ground established. Everyone that is loud about it, either for or against, are automatically biased and will show extreme negatives with each group. I don't know how the community is doing as a whole, what's going on as a whole, and do it reliably. That coupled with a lack of history doesn't sit well.
And I kind of wrote that rant because its really not because I don't see the use of transandrophobia, and I think it can be important especially with trans moc or honestly any of us who have intersecting minority statuses. I genuinely hope it can carry on to be critically looked at and discussed. But right now it's just chaos and please don't compare it to transmisogyny because thats on the basis of intersectionality, and transandrophobia would not fit under that same concept.
If something clicks from the research I do either in school or my free time I'll definitely talk about it.

Honestly I'm very glad to see a fellow wooey history person. I haven't had the courage to really dig into it, but there's a select few oddly specific historical events that I've always felt weirdly connected to. However, I know when the time comes, I'm going to need heaps of corroborating evidence and documented sources.
Do you happen to have any tips for overcoming the fear that you might be right about something that would topple your existing belief systems? Or were past lives something that easily slid into your worldview?
The existence of past lives was definitely something already part of my world view—everything else in the natural world is cyclical and recycled and reborn, so it personally made sense to me that souls could be like that too. And I think there’s something to be said for inherent draws to certain time periods or places or events. My fear came more from people thinking I was nuts or was a ~Born in the Wrong Era Romanticizing History~ type of person taking it too far, because I like to think I’m a Reasonable and Evidence-Based person (while also understanding the limitations that…no one can know EVERYTHING and as living humans we have a very specific and narrow understanding of the total scope of existence…I’m highly suspicious of anyone who speaks in absolutes and claims certainty in that area). But turns out all my respectable history friends just accept me as someone who knows how to properly research but is also a lil eccentric haha.
I will say that, re: needing heaps of evidence and documented sources—as you probably already know—recorded history is very limited and the odds of finding a lot of documentation about a person are low unless that person is from a certain time period, place, and elevated socioeconomic status. Most people slip through the cracks and exist on paper only in a limited way or not at all. While I’m fortunate enough to have a connection to a history that’s extensively documented and have found a bunch of intersections regarding voyages, all of the information I’ve ‘received’ surrounding this individuals’ personal life has no record. So I always have to take it with a grain of salt with the understanding that I might be just imagining things. Especially when it comes to a topic I already know a lot about. Not everything can be confirmed and that’s an uncertainty to just live with. But when I start getting accurate Cook Islands Māori names and words relating to folks this person interacted with when I’ve had zero exposure to the language or region myself, well! That’s something I can’t explain! The whole process is a mix of doubt and weird coincidences that, if they happen enough, start feeling less like coincidences.

Progria Arc Summarization (Part 3)
Eventually after Chimera - and the other members of the GoT - have cooled down, the situation is explained to them on what the plan of action is. Kat talks of The Cage and their plan, specifically them raiding the place and attempting to both destroy it and obtain as much evidence of the HWDP’s actions to compile a special ‘package’ that they would leak to the public. They attempt to strike The Cage immediately, to prevent the HWDP to fully realize what information they have obtained and prepare their defenses further - or worse, expunge any evidence of their operations.
Chimera offers reaching out to the GoT in order to assist in this raid, only to be shot down by Kat who continues to stress the fact that they are running on severely limited time. Chimera continues saying that they possess members of the guild who are capable of teleporting various members to specific coordinates, after which the mercenaries reconsider this proposal - and after speaking with Dr. Horus through the comms, agree with it.
Ultimately the plan is for them to head to the obtained coordinates of The Cage - retrieved by analyzing the movements of MasSec - and after reaching it, immediately strike while Chimera sends the coordinates of the location to the GoT so they can send a mobilized team of available Night Wardens.
During the flight in the mercenary’s dropship, the GoT members get more acquainted with the mercenaries as well as the other cyborgs. Bladesong also explains her situation on how she encountered them and the eventual idea of having them all working together since they share a common goal. This conversation eventually ends however when they get close to coordinates, in which the cyborgs, the members of the GoT, and most of the mercenaries lead the dropship after landing in a location nearby. At this point they knew that HWDP would be on edge since they would’ve detected the dropship through radar, so they immediately head out while the dropship flies off.
They eventually find the location of The Cage - said place disguised as a military base. After all of them making their preparations - and Kat setting up numerous drones in order to record footage of as much of everything as possible, they begin their assault.
Although The Cage is severally armed with MasSec security disguised as soldiers and automated machines, the group manages to punch a clean hole through and begin destroying all resistance in their way. As they push deeper, Chimera proceeds to branch off from the group to select a location for the GoT to teleport some of its members to.
After killing most guards on the surface, they discover a hidden entrance that leaders underground. With the assistance of the cyborgs they make quick work of the heavily fortified doors and push inside, revealing the place for what it is - an expansive underground network of metal. They continue to push further, taking out anything that would possibly act as a hinderance. Eventually however they stumble upon something that is different from the armed humans and weaponized machines - Pokemon Hybrids.
These hybrids look like that of the other artificial hybrids that the GoT has encountered and saved in the past, however these are different. They wear unusual metal collars, and the looks in their eyes hold nothing but animalistic fury.
The proceeding battles grow more difficult and intense with the hybrids now involved, since these Pokemon are fighting alongside with the HWDP. These hybrids attack with no self preservation, using all of their abilities and strengths to attempt to kill the invading force.
Due to this the group is left with no choice but to kill any and all hybrids they see, however during this process they learn that by breaking the collars they wear they end up going completely berserk - attacking and killing everything nearby, including members of the HWDP. Although these hybrids were made to be living weapons, power of the cyborgs have proven to be far more superior due to them easily dispatching said hybrids with impressive speed.
The group makes it an effort to comb through the maze-like network of steel tunnels and chambers, making sure to leave nothing to survive.
While the fighting continues, the drones that has been deployed by the group have been recording everything - from the caged brainwashed hybrids to the soldiers to retrieving actual data on the various experiments that the HWDP has done. At this point Chimera has managed to establish a safe zone for the Gardevoir twins to teleport reinforcements, said reinforcements being the other members of his Strike Team as well as multiple members from Purging Light.
At this point an announcement is made through the PA system in The Cage, the voice revealing to be Carlos Robertson - the man behind the creation of Snakewulf, the one who holds a grudge against Dr. Horus, and the one responsible for killing James’ friend. He laughs, saying that although he had no idea on how they managed to find this location, but their efforts are completely in vain. He has an ultimate weapon that he has been preparing for quite some time and although it’s not finished, he plans to release it since he will prove his genius once and for all.
After which the entire facility begins to shake and fall apart, causing the group inside to make their escape since they realized that staying would only cause them to become buried alive. After the group barely manages to escape - and meet the members of the GoT that have been summoned as backup, they notice that the ground ahead of them is caving in.
What follows is a massive fissure forms in the center of the entire facility, followed with hulking claws the size of buildings to grasp both earth and metal in order to hoist itself up to the surface. This reveals to be a creature of titanic size, its body alone dwarfing everything around it. Its body is composed of molten rock, its reptilian form having a humanoid upper-torso with countless claws and a serpentine lower-torso.
This Kaiju-like monster is nothing that the group has ever seen, its form resembling no possible Pokemon. At this point Dr. Horus speaks through the comm system - having witnessed it through several drones within the vicinity. ‘That’s impossible!’ He mutters to himself. ‘This project was scrapped due to the fast quantities of resources it required as well as the necessity for Legendary Pokemon DNA. By the gods, they actually managed to create this thing?’
At this point the hulking titan lets out a massive roar, causing the surroundings to shake. The voice of Carlos radiates from the monstrosity - the specific source unknown, saying that although a little more time to prepare would have been nice...it would still be more than enough for the creature to destroy them completely. And once the creature is finished with them, he will unleash it upon Evolutia to end the Pokemon once and for all.
At this point the mercenaries are told to fall back, however the cyborgs immediately charge in - along with Bladesong after seeing them do so. The following battle became incredibly destructive, the massive arms of the monstrosity causing deep craters and fissures in the earth as it attempts to smash them. However the cyborg’s unnatural agility allows them to easily evade its attacks and scale its massive form, however they soon discover that their enhanced weapons do very little in terms of inflicting any damage to the monstrosity’s armored hide.
At this point the members of the GoT fall back completely, however seeing the cyborgs fight Chimera decides to enter the fray as well due to him being part Deoxys - and thus having a lot more survivability and power compared to the other guildmembers. Ultimately however the group continues to find very little in terms of finding a weakness in the monstrosity, all attacks being absorbed or shrugged off with little more than minor scratches.
At this point Carlos shouts through the unseen speakers to the group, telling them that ‘Project: Behemoth’ was only beginning, that they have yet to witness true power.
At this point the creature opens its many-jawed mouth, causing various crystals lining its neck to glow with red-yellow light. At this point the creature unleashes a power beam of pure energy and heat. Chimera manages to barely dodge this attack - albeit without losing one of his arms in the process, however upon turning to resulting devastation he sees that the beam has left a massive scar in the base itself, leaving nothing but ash and molten rock.
At this point Carlos laughs maniacally, saying that they have no chance in winning against this man-made weapon of mass destruction.
Being near the Behemoth’s head, one of the cyborgs notice the source of the man’s voice - a well-hidden series of speakers attached to various bands of metal and tech, similar to that of the collars worn by the hybrids in the facility.
Realizing that this thing is being controlled, they come to a singular conclusion - destroy the collar. This decision was surprisingly easy due to the fact that the metal is not nearly as durable as the monster’s hide, however upon destroying said collar...they begin to realize that they have made a terrible mistake.
With the collar destroyed, the Behemoth immediately begins rampaging. Its limbs and body thrashes wildly, destroying anything and everything in its wake. It unleashes numerous beams from its maw, quickly converting the surrounding landscape into a hellscape.
On the plus side the group now knows that this monstrosity won’t be targeting Evolutia any longer, however now they have a whole new problem a - an enraged and berserking titan. If this thing were to be left to its own devices, it would eventually make its way to populated cities of Progria and start killing countless innocent people.
During this the view remaining speakers attached to the monster starts eliminating the distorted voice of Carlos - specifically him shouting ‘It’s not listening! Why is it not listening?! What did you do?!’
‘Things have gotten more complicated.’ Mutters Torrent, knowing that although the objective still remains the same... ...the problem has gotten substantially more out of hand.
