Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the Spanish Legion basically the f4scist soldiers who served Franco in the African colonies, especifically Spanish (today Western) Sahara?? Interesting that they are still proud of something like that 😬 Also they have parades I think?? Where they "re-enact" stuff? It's one thing to display things like things to learn from the past, but here that doesn't seem to be the case 🤔
Kaixo!
Yes, the Legión has been a fascist batallion since its foundation, and Franco was a colonel there before the war. In fact, the Legión and the Moroccan indigenous forces - the Moorish guard, as they were later known - were brought to the peninsula to play a decisive role in the Spanish Civil War.
After Morocco was granted independence, the Legion was used to repress Saharaui people in the 70s - Western Sahara was still a Spanish colony at the time - that just wanted independence.
They parade along the rest of the Spanish army and they have a poor goat pet. Our male relatives who did the mandatory military service have told us legionarios used to give the goat just alcohol to drink and made it smoke cigarrettes, so you can only pity that poor thing. They also procession during the Holy Week bearing the Cristo Legionario.
Everything surrounding this group is so camp and extra nationalistic it's almost grotesque. And yet some people online fangirl over their homoerotic uniforms. Legionarios would beat them up to death if they knew they're being called homoerotic, just saying...
Oh, and of course they're not displaying the ikurriña to learn, but to brag about how they beat the Basques aka "the enemy" in their own words.

#OTD in 1651 – Siege of Limerick | Henry Ireton, Oliver Cromwell’s son-in-law, lays siege to Limerick city.
#OTD in 1651 – Siege of Limerick | Henry Ireton, Oliver Cromwell’s son-in-law, lays siege to Limerick city.
Limerick is besieged by Cromwell forces under the leadership of his son-in-law, Henry Ireton. As with most of the Cromwell campaign in Ireland, it was a brutal affair. Limerick would finally fall in October mainly as a result of starvation and plague. English casualties were actually greater than the Irish (including Ireton who would die shortly after the surrender) amounted to an estimated 2,000…

The history of the Knights Templar is always an interesting dive.
The Knights Templar, Although called The poor Soldiers of Christ, were said to have more wealth than many kings of their time,
The Templars were also said to have developed and mastered a banking system, which allowed travelers to safely hand over their valuables to the knights prior to taking their journey through the holy land. The traveler's monies and jewelries would be safely waiting for them at their destination.

A Spanish M109 comes ashore at El Omayed, Egypt during Exercise BRIGHT STAR, October 20th, 2001.
The M109 is an American self-propelled howitzer used by numerous nations. First developed in the 1960s, the M109 has since then seen numerous upgrades and variants. Pictured is a Spanish M109A5, which uses a slightly different gun from previous variants, has a better engine, and can fire rocket-assisted projectiles.
