Elven System

I recently got diagnosed with OSDD, so here is a little info post about it. (Forgive me if I get some of the terminology wrong, I'm new to this!)

I am a 4-part age regression system. We are all memory-sharers, but hold different responsibilities/personalities. We are also all autistic, but showcase symptoms differently.

I tag some, but not all, posts with the alter's name, especially if it's specific to them and their interests.

Elf

20 years old currently. They/them. Host/core.

Elf is the host alter, so they are almost always fronting or co-fronting. They are in the process of emotional healing (which is how they found out about their OSDD in the first place!!). They hold most of the body/society responsibilities (eating, going to class/work, etc). They like writing and art. Most of this blog is from their POV, so I won't usually tag them.

Sam

14 years old. He/him.

Sam is the trauma holder and harbors a lot of anger as well. He uses humor as a coping mechanism. He is also very into music, with his favorite band being Twenty One Pilots (blurryface/trench era specifically), though he also likes folk punk, alt, and hard rock. He is transmasc. Sam fronts when the other alters are stressed or tired. He's sort of like the protector I think? He's a pretty cool guy, if perpetually tired. He's the only(ish) alter in the system to have romantic desires, and he mainly likes men/masc folks. Resting bitch face type autism, but mainly just wants to listen to music and vibe.

Ellie

6-8 years old. She/her.

Ellie is the innocent one of the system. She is the most outwardly noticeable personality change; she speaks in a "baby voice" and her neutral expression is different from the other alters'. She cannot mask autism worth shit, so she is constantly stimming vocally or physically. She's usually very excited and happy, though she sometimes fronts when other alters are overstimulated and can take on that anxiety. She is always ready to infodump about anything and everything, especially our special interests. She loves typical "kid's stuff" like stuffed animals, dinosaur chicken nuggets, etc. The rest of the system is very protective of her and will not let her front unless they all feel that it is safe for her to do so.

Dog

????. It/its.

We started calling it Dog as a joke ("I got that dawg in me") and then the name kinda stuck. Dog rarely fronts and is in the background mostly. It's a "thing" alter, representative of the space in between alters, kind of when we're dissociating and don't really feel like a person/having a body. It's basically like a rabid animal, like those reaction image stick figures covered in blood, basically. It holds all the "nonhuman" emotions/feelings, sort of the instinctual stuff if that makes sense. Dog basically goes batshit over stuff that it's interested in, and is the "source" of hyperfixations. There's also like an inside joke between the alters that Dog is the source of songs getting stuck in our head, because it's just constantly playing music.

movie: i have so many!!!! but howl's has always been my comfort movie and the one i go to when i need a pick-me-up. i remember it was forever saved in our dvr growing up until i got it on dvd.

hobby: ttrpgs!! i'm only actively playing in one at the moment which makes me sad, but it's genuinely a hobby that changed my life. i became a much more confident person after playing in my first game and have made a lot of friends through it. i also like the idea of running games and have so many settings and systems i want to try/have dabbled in, but my brain makes it hard for me to be consistent. (rip my vtm game and my outbreak undead game and my delta green game and my tales from the loop game.......)

animal: i'm a wildlife biologist. i have so many favorite animals. but california condors... my giant, beautiful, hideous, imperiled dinosaurs. i would die if i ever got to see one in the wild. OR WORK WITH ONE???? i love them so much. i have a research presentation with sources. i will talk about them forever. (green herons, turkey vultures, and colugos were all close runners ups)

character: i was gonna say my wizard love, gale dekarios, as he is my current hyperfixation. but if we're going with "of all time," it's easily fox mulder. to where i briefly considered changing my name to fox.

color: basic biologist answer, but green! olive green is my favorite of the shades, but i love almost all green.

place: i am a texan, through and through. i love my state even if she doesn't love me, and nowhere holds my heart quite like the deserts of west texas. i'm a desert rat and love all of the south west, but the trans-pecos is near and dear to me.

season: texas doesn't really have seasons as it were... but the transitory ones are my favorite. it's not so mind-numbingly hot, or bone-chillingly cold (not that that's really a thing but ya know). there's all the color changes. lots of rain. i was torn between spring and autumn, but spring has tornados, so autumn won.

album: a very hard question!!!! music is so important to me and has been since i was a pre-teen. there are a lot of albums i could have put here, from when i was an emo-tween to my current more country-folk-aligned preferences... but i think every song on shepherd's dog hits me deep in my soul. it feels like home. resurrection fern is my favorite song.

food: another very hard question!!!! i'm such a foodie. i love all food. i was going to take the easy way out and just put "lebanese food," but my fond memories of my first time having knafeh won out. it helps that it's also delicious and i get so excited when i can find a place here that serves it. esp when they use the birds nest style phyllo!!

I'm with you on the xeno queens. The reason xenos are scary are because they don't look human whatsoever. So when you make it human it's not scary and now borderline sexual.

Quick rant, love me good monster designs and those were disappointing

Actually, you're kinda wrong with both of those statements!

1. It's not like they arent sexual already. The xenos were, originally, INTENSELY sexual in design/nature. Yes really. H.R. Giger's work has a lot and i mean a LOT of titty dick and coochie literally everywhere. A fair amount of uh. the "vibe" i suppose made it into the final film (the original alien). There's a documentary/interview out there that shows the eggs originally had just one horizontal slit instead of the cross one (which they changed because it looked TOO crass, but ended up making it worse)

personally i dont like it though, so i ignore it, but it is very much there (unfortunately). I also dont trust people who hyperfixate on that

and 2. the original aliens are scary BECAUSE they are humanoid! They are uncanny valley, and remarkably intelligent, in the first movie ONE ALIEN is able to wreck havoc on a spaceship of trained astronauts and its intelligent in how it does it.

Also, it looks human (and even has a human skull under the dome!) and it's life cycle implies that it is mimicking the human shape by growing in one, or using its dna and such, its not quite good enough to blend in but its good enough to appear just vaguely familiar to feel WRONG

(here's a pic of the original look with the skull btw (i couldnt find pictures of the suit at a quick search) im so sad they forgot this in later instances)

it feels so... unsettling. just opaque enough that you might miss it, but thats Your Own Skull, peeking at you through this creature.

This is why i dont like the alien extended universe. When you get xenomorph splices with other creatures it just... loses its charm for me. Sure they look cool, whatever, but splicing it with animals to make weird xenos just loses the pure dread that the human familiarity carries over with it imo.

And also, it makes me really mad that they reduced the aliens to non intelligent gun fodder in basically any piece of media that isnt the first two movies (that ive seen at least) like its this creature with remarkable intelligence almost on par with people, and the MOST that people seem to be able to do with them is... "well they live in hives, so theres many of them, lets make them look kinda like dogs and attack like rabid animals so we can have 5 cool gun dudes shoot them into a fine mist" yeah its cool i guess, but it completely loses its punch

(Thats why alien isolation was so good too, one of the bitches fucking WRECKED a station and you were almost helpless dealing with it)

But yeah, going back to the xeno queens (and everything else). Its like they are trying to reinvent the wheel. There are very solid reasons why these designs worked so well in the original media, and they are the same reasons why they keep making designs that utterly fail because they do not understand the source material.

Right, so I’m taking my coffee break, fucking around on YouTube aimlessly. I’ve been hyperfixating on Byler recently, including looking up Mileven arguments to see if they have merit / if they are refutable. So YouTube suggests “11 Iconic Mileven Moments” to me & I start watching, vaguely remembering that this video might have been called tongue-in-cheek by Byler shippers. (Also, for the record, I do love Eleven! And Mike! I love all my children. I wouldn’t be opposed to Mileven if all literary/cinematic signs didn’t point elsewhere. No hate.) So the first thing that I hear is TV in the background as Hopper leans over to look in El’s door and see El and Mike kissing at the beginning of season 3. I hear the line “...Overnight, Higgins had installed an alarm system. It activated the moment I opened the door, which meant I had less than a minute to figure the combination. After that, a siren would go off...” (source: here).  So I googled it (as you can see lol), and it’s from episode one of a TV show called “Magnum, P.I.” which aired on the 11th of December in 1980. Episode description includes “Magnum’s old Navy buddy is dead and the Navy says he was a cocaine smuggler. Magnum sets out to prove his buddy was framed.” (Source here.) Reminds me of Mike discovering that Will is “dead” in season 1 and setting out to prove that that’s BS and Will is alive. (And Joyce doing as much, as well.) Additionally, earlier on in the scene we get this quote:  Magnum : ["stealing" Robin's Ferrari]  Don't look at the dogs. Work the lock. Work the lock, work the lock. Don't look at the dogs. [looking at Zeus and Apollo approaching] Magnum : You looked at the dogs! [getting in and shutting the door] Magnum : [narrating] Sometimes, everything goes exactly as planned. Sometimes, it doesn't. Overnight, Higgins had installed an alarm system... (Same source as the quote above.) I haven’t seen the episode (yet?) but I can guess what’s happening here. There are guard dogs threatening these characters as they try to steal/get access to a car. The thematic overlap with season 2 (esp the finale) is pretty striking here. The demodogs attacking Hopper & El as El tries to close the gate - could easily be reframed as the “dogs” being an “alarm system” that “activated” the moment “the door” was opened.  As we continue on with the scene, the next quotes seem to be the characters trying to figure out how to deactivate the alarm system: Magnum : Uh... no. Well, sort of. But it-it's okay. It's a security check. It's just sort of a game. Higgins would have picked a number that he was familiar with, like the address...[trying, to no avail] Magnum : Or the zip code. Inge : Or maybe his Social Security number? Magnum : You know his Social Security number? Inge : No. Magnum : The phone! He used Robin Masters' personal phone number! Jonathan Quayle Higgins III : [trying, the alarm turns off and the engine starts]  No... So, this next part, instead of reminding me of the end of season 2, strikes me as foreshadowing! There’s a big, notable scene during the finale of season 3 where Hopper and Joyce are trying to get that number in, remember? Cue Dustin and Suzie’s sing-a-long that nearly killed them all but narrowly saved the day instead, lol.  Anyway. The associations I’m making with different parts of this quote might not even be the main point or points that The Duffers were making by using this clip. But here is what I know for SURE: this is just one MORE bit of evidence that they do NOT drop “background stuff” willy-nilly. They are INTENTIONAL with details!! Even ones that casual viewers would pay no attention to! And every time I find reason to believe that they are paying intentional attention to small details, it gives me a little dose of hope that their Byler subtext, foreshadowing, and setup (that folks such as @kaypeace21 have dug extensively into) are purposeful. Now I just wait for convincing evidence that they’ll pull the metaphorical trigger and follow through. They better!

Sexuality Headcanon: Vivi is pan and poly! She also likes bi as a term for her and will use it and pan interchangeably, but she likes the colors of the pan flag more given her crush and bf :3c

Gender Headcanon: Vivi is cis, though she never really thought about it until she and Arthur talked about it and she met Duet. Then she dove into research to learn more. She likes she/her pronouns, and likes to feel pretty and feminine most of the time. She considers herself lucky to be born comfortable in her own skin and tries her best to be a reliable ally for her non-cis friends and family.

A ship I have with said character: I ship the ot3 with her more than anything!! I love both facets of it as well. Her and Lewis have these sweet moments that can also be silly, and I love her being goofballs with Arthur and having their own fluffy moments. And with both them having these times that aren’t boisterous and quiet and intimate in a soft way for comfort. My jam. 

I will say that for Vithur outside of OT3 to work for me, I prefer Lewis having reconciled with them and moved on and they get together, or an au. I don’t feel like it’d work all that well otherwise because of Arthur’s personal feelings about Lewis and any guilt about what happened, but i know there are ways to handle it that still work even within those parameters, and honestly i love their characters and their chemistry a lot to still give those a read!  But tbh any pairing art i see my brain tends to categorize as within the ot3 because i love it so much anyways oops.

A BROTP I have with said character: Mystery! He’s been there for her since the start and they have a special relationship. She can tell him anything, and when they were young he acted as de facto babysitter. She is still a handful even now, but she adores him and does her best to be kind to him. They like playing pranks together and they are most certainly partners in crime sometimes, but they can rely on each other emotionally, and he is a source of comfort for Vivi, and vice versa. Vivi is the first person Mystery felt like he belonged with, and he wants to always make her happy as he can.

A NOTP I have with said character: I guess sorta Vithur in the conditions i mentioned above where i like the dynamic but can’t see it working without a lot of fleshing out. Other than that, I’m not fond of Shiro with her for similar reasons I don’t like the plant lady with arthur. What we know is that shiro is violent and aggressive and trying to hurt her dog, so while vivi might think youkai are cool, i can’t imagine a relationship working or her being with someone willing to hurt her friends. I don’t imagine Vivi would be fine with her having mystery as a target or treating everyone else in the van like collateral damage, and i can’t see a relationship between the two of them being healthy. Again no one is a bad person for liking the ship and they can def make it work and have fun with it if it makes them happy! but....yeah, not for me haha

A random headcanon: Vivi is autistic! She likes her special fabrics that have good sensations for her, and she likes things a certain way sometimes. She’s adventurous, but if something that is a source of comfort and consistency is changed it can upset her and throw her whole day off, and then she feels mad at herself for letting something so small affect her so much. (My favorite example is her ordering food at a restaurant. She’s willing to order something new, but if she orders something she usually gets and something in the recipe changed and it doesn’t taste right it can upset her because it’s Not the Way It’s Supposed to Be) She excited stims by flapping her arms and maybe clapping, and she hyperfixates on things. Her major one is supernatural stories and mythology and it’s why she wanted to be a paranormal investigator, but she’ll totally get sucked into a video game or a story or a book and tell the others all about it, who find it adorable and listen to her infodump with a little smile.

General Opinion over said character: A great gal!! 10/10 would befriend and want in their lives! She does her best and doesn’t deserve some of the flak she gets! She’s excitable and sometimes she doesn’t look before she leaps or she gets caught up in that excitement and doesn’t think about consequences, but she’s just really enthusiastic and she will do what she can to help others too, and will always do her best! Deserves happiness!

Well, this is certainly something that happened.  

In response to a post I made stating the various reasons I don’t like the Twilight Princess manga (which was in and of itself a response to some replies I got on this other post), I got a barrage of replies from a user (who will go unnamed, they’ve already been blocked) in defense of the thing - which, ordinarily, wouldn’t be a big deal!  People are allowed to have different opinions and I never once stated anyone who liked it should feel bad!  I started writing up a reply to them in the middle of this barrage, but their replies just kept coming and got subsequently worse, yet it was all...so bizarre to the point that it would feel weird to not address that it happened.  I’m putting all of this under a read more, because wow this is a wall of text, but also this is the kind of nonsense I want people to avoid having to read if it can be helped.  At any rate, this is what they had to say:

I don’t know, this really honestly feels like reaching. It feels like criticism for the sake of criticism without actual narrative flaws being shown, but your anger seems to stem from “This interpretation is different from what I thought even though I admit all official art shows the charachter this way” and “Link HAD to be raised in ordon because of one quote from the enclosed instruction book”. Twilight Princess was literally made to be “the edgy zelda” in reponse to fan overreaction to wind waker. This is undeniable. All official art depicts link this way. He turned into a freaking wolf in the middle of the twilight craze! but no, he *can’t* be like that because of random expressions he makes when holding pets or items? First of all, even in the manga he isn’t an edgeboy all the time.

Secondly, it feels like you're merely glossing over all that was added in terms of charachterization! In the original game, I felt nothing for Ilia. She showed up, yelled at link for maybe getting epona slightly hurt, and then got kidnapped. Maybe a bit of tsundere stuff, but seriously, Midna is literally the best tsundere ever. You can't out midna-minda in her own damn game. XD In the manga, Ilia and Link actually have a warm and very close relationship, you can see them through all the slice of life in the first volume. I really grew to like her and truly felt sorry for her when bad things happened to her. She actually gets far, FAR more respect as a person and charachter in the manga than merely a trophy for link to get back. But no, you're far too focused on subtle expressions and insinuations because that is literally all anyone had to go on for the longest time. In reality, Link, as has been said many times, is an avatar as much as he is a charachter. You can't gloss over his official art depicitons any more than I can random expressions he makes when finding a heart piece.

Not to mention, you call the blog midzelink yet you make zero mention of the super obvious wlw-as-fuck zelda flashback in volume 5? It's a sad thing that Shad being straight is something I have seen people complain about, yet Zelda and Midna's relationship getting such a huge focus passes without a peep. It's a disturbing trend I see in my fellow Fujoshi. And on the subject of Shad, his relationship with Ilia is far more likely something included to give her a happy ending, rather than just seeing link off into the sunset to try to find midna and live forever alone in ordon. On that note as well, Link not being from Ordon fits PERFECTLY with the ending, Link being the only hylian, link being from there, all of this is SCREAMING that that is the place he never truly belonged, the manga simply takes it one step further and in this version says he was never from there any way, cementing that. It gives the concept that Link was using Ordon as a place to avoid being who he was extra weight. And Honestly, it makes him less of a jerk in the end for leaving ordon, as he never truly belonged.  

And It's actually a narrative flaw in the original for Lanaryu to make mention of misusing the power of the master sword and then having nothing come of that warning later. If you're going to set chekov's gun down on the table, you better use it by the end of the play. It's simply capitalzing on something that the story actually set up, and playing into the tone of the story nintendo marketed it. But really, most of my annoyance dosen't come from the fact that you don't like the manga. People can dislike what they want. It's that all your grievances seem to come from stuff at the very beginning, and you liked it for so long, when they were there just as much as they are now. This kinda reeks of someone else slowly influencing you over time, rather than your own thoughts.

(Note: a “fujoshi” is a woman who likes yaoi, usually used in a derogatory manner, but it seems to be self-proclaimed in this case.  That is to say, this person proudly announced they fetishized MLM relationships, and then proceeded to tell me my opinion was Bad and Wrong because I didn’t praise Himekawa for a scene that ultimately wasn’t WLW at all, even though I and a lot of other people liked to interpret it that way.  Do not give Himekawa credit for gay rep, ever.)

Again, I was going to reply to this person civilly...up until I read the Midzel/Fujoshi reply, which decimated me on impact. There’s a heckuva lot I could say in response to, well...everything else, but in the interest of making this post shorter, I’ll break it down into a bulleted list:

Link being raised in Ordon is not based on “one quote from the enclosed instruction book” - Ilia specifically states when she gets her memory back, “When we were young, you and I... You were always there... You were always beside me... Link.” (I already mentioned this in my original post, which they evidently neglected to read properly.) And this is to speak nothing of the familial bond between Link and all of the Ordonians that is fairly evident within the context of the game, i.e. Rusl trusting him to deliver a very important gift to the Royal Family, or all the children looking up to him as much as they do.

Saying “all official art depicts Link this way” in defense of his characterization in the manga being edgy (when his in-game persona is far-flung from that) is pretty shaky when you realize that the same can be said for Skyward Sword, which arguably has the most emotive and happy Link of any game. In all of SS Link’s official art, he is angry, mid-yell, or stone-faced.  That’s how character art works.  That’s how marketing works.  They wanted to market TP especially as a darker game, yes, in response to the critiques of The Wind Waker, but this is literally a man who smiles softly every time he picks up a dog or a cat. You can pet the goats.  You get excited about fishing.  If TP Link should be “edgy” because of his official art and no other reason, then SS Link should be, too.

MIDNA IS NOT A TSUNDERE, HOLY SHIT.  SHE’S NOT.  I WILL NEVER CONCEDE THIS. She doesn’t mistreat Link because she likes him, she mistreats him because he is nothing to her when they first meet, and this is a stance that slowly changes as they get to know each other!  She stops treating him like garbage when she stops seeing him as such, and her behavior throughout the game post-Zelda is a mixed bag of shame over how she treated him previously and a longing to make up for it.  How anyone can construe that as tsundere I will never, ever understand.

no, Link likely isn’t from Ordon (again, already addressed in my original post, but again, I guess this person can’t read), but he was certainly raised there, see: the first bullet point

Lanayru never once mentions ANYTHING about misusing the power of the Master Sword, so that entire point is completely invalid.  I literally have no idea what they’re talking about here. Lanayru does have the famous line, “Those who do not know the danger of wielding power will, before long, be ruled by it,” but that’s in reference to the Fused Shadows, not the Master Sword.  Which, you know, you would know if you actually knew the source material as well as you claim to, dude.

Lastly, yes, I did like the manga when I first read it, but as I already stated, that was because I blasted through all four (available at the time) volumes in one sitting, and it was immediately after my hyperfixation for this game resurfaced (about a week or so before I made this blog!).  I was Starved For Content, and the manga was Content.  Now I’m not Starved, and two more volumes have released since, and guess what!  People’s opinions can change!  And my opinion is that the manga isn’t for me, and this entire, extremely accusatory essay of yours in the replies of a post I made stating my own opinion was entirely uncalled for and rather intrusive.  So, yeah.  Blocked.

alright let’s do this. let’s talk about why dankovsky is definitely trans.

i’m on day 6 now so i guess i’ll add some shit to the pile as it goes along

of course i could make a ton of jokes that are vague gestures like “i, too, am 5′2 and have my bachelor’s degree, so as a gay trans man i of course know one when i see one”. and i can! i do! i can confirm that at 27 we are just Like That. i think there’s also something to be said about him getting called ‘dandy’ and ‘fop’ by people (which, btw, have been used as slang terms for gay men) - something my friends and i all noticed after starting HRT is that we now care way more about our appearances - but that’s more of the same, more on the fun side of personal interpretation.

but since my bachelor’s degree is in being Deeply Disrespectful*, i might as well go over what i consider to be text-based evidence in favor of this interpretation. because this is the kind of thing i do in my spare time, for fun.

at the moment my working memory only gives me three big things to go on:

first, the carouser who suggests that the mara / shabnak-adyr / steppe creature is actually daniil. all of the steppe creatures mentioned in the game thus far, to my knowledge, take on the guise of women. beyond the obvious (daniil being read as a woman, or effeminate in appearance - something i’ll mention in the next point as well), there’s the fact that all of these steppe creatures appear as something that they aren’t. this could work on several levels; by day 6, people are starting to turn on daniil. because he’s become more or less a glorified errand boy and political chess piece, it would be easy to take a step back and see how he’s being scapegoated now. he’s been set up, as an outsider, as an easy target for disdain - all three of the healers have been, which really comes to a head for him & clara specifically in day 6 (artemiy has been getting it from the first day but by day 6 has disappeared). and although this rumor about daniil comes from talking to the carouser, talking to the teenage boy and the tot will reveal that other NPCs are starting to see him as a failure, too; the tot specifically says “we are so, so afraid of you”. daniil gets called a Harbinger of Death. but this takes on an extra layer of meaning if daniil is in danger of being read as lying about who he is, in terms of gender (which i’ll talk about in point 3).

second, and this isn’t specifically about daniil being trans - but i think he’s almost definitely meant to be read as queer, but maybe with the exact label being open to interpretation. he gets called a fop and a dandy, both of which refer to foolish and vain men who spend too much time focused on their appearance (so it’s kind of funny that he can comment on the wealthy man npc and ask him about the “mad tailor” who came up with his outfit. is daniil insulting it, or is he looking to buy it?) - but those are also both terms that have been used as slang to describe gay men. i’ve seen it mentioned before that although this game doesn’t have dating sim elements in it that daniil can flirt with maria and eva...but honestly? he has flirtatious dialogue with pretty much everyone within his age range. i mean, good god, in artemiy’s route, the his first interaction with daniil includes daniil referencing plato’s description of soulmates to describe them. and artemiy can sleep in his bed. and, actually, with that in mind - rats and dogs aren’t the only ones who take the blame for carrying and spreading disease outbreaks: trans and gay people get thrown under the bus here all the time, too...and daniil is sometimes implied and other times outright accused of being the source of the plague or of its spread. plenty of video games are sloppy, and i could easily handwave something like that...but pathologic is hardly sloppy, so i couldn’t shrug it away here. 

last: daniil’s entire route seems to keep circling back to misogyny. in the context of psychological horror, part of what makes the genre its own distinction is bringing the central character’s most secret fears to fruition. this is a staple of the silent hill series; all of alessa’s terrors come to life in silent hill as relentlessly hunted by her mother (while harry, who adores his daughter, has to search to try and find her the whole game, only to fail no matter how well you did), james and angela and eddie are all forced to come to terms with the murders they committed and what that means about them as people, and one of heather’s underlying fears is the terror of sexual assault and pregnancy that leads up to the reveal of how exactly she’s going to give birth to god. and daniil’s route is about uncovering the truth - but the townsfolk’s ideas of uncovering the truth is in brutalizing women, frequently with comments as to how well they perform gender. despite aspity projecting her internalized misogyny on daniil, he has plenty of snarky and furious comments to make about the way women in the town are treated. and here’s what would make this extra horrifying for daniil: they are already starting to turn on him, so what exactly would they do to the doctor they now see as an agent of chaos if he’s outed as afab? the entire context surrounding the townsfolks’ desire to expose women as monsters pulling tricks reeks of transphobia. the steppe creatures do really exist - or at least, one of them does, should you do sticky’s sidequest for day 6 - and you could definitely attribute parts of daniil’s route to be a conflict of old world vs new world, city vs. country, and class oppression - as i think you’re meant to. but the misogyny keeps cropping up the sidelines like veins in an arm. it’s easy to see why mysticism vs. science is a big part of daniil’s journey in the game, and i think it’s (sadly) refreshing to see misogyny shown as an evil, and i get why these things are linked to daniil’s cynical ideas about the nature of humanity and how that’s at war with his being a doctor and the desire to “cure” death or at least extend longevity (it must be hard to want to see a world succeed that wants to see you fail). but what role does misogyny specifically and explicitly play in the horror aspect of his story? (please keep in mind that the realities of how transphobia and [misaimed] misogyny affect trans men needs a lot of nuance; if you are not a trans man yourself, please be open minded to the discussion.)

anyway. that’s what i got so far on my thoughts about the topic... i’m sure i’ll think of more stuff later but it’s like two in the morning and my hyperfix brain should go sleep, lol.

the way in which i portray gunji is very based on his personality as seen throughout the series of togainu no chi both game , anime , manga , etc. this is the combined portrayal from every angle . i know that autism is very different in people varying to severity . to which i cannot completely define it for gunji but he does have some sort of social & communication difficulties even as an adult , repetitive behaviours , hyperfixation , and bad habits given the nature of togainu no chi . it’s mostly in gunji’s behaviour rather than the other things where autism is rather visible . 

in my headcanons , he grew up in an orphanage . many would remark him as very distant , displaying asocial behaviours & not desiring to interact with other kids while he was there . he often had unusual interests that made other kids stay away from him . he liked to find bugs , animals , & bring them back to show off . he was not a fearful child . most of these are the behaviours i find listed on the sources above that gunji displays at length . he often is very sing - song , seemingly happy at all times with a smile but doesn’t show expressions of sadness or other known emotions unless he couldn’t get his way . he threw plenty of tantrums when he got things taken away , going as far as being violent towards his caretakers for making him feel ‘bad’.

emotions are very hard for him to grasp especially with other people . he won’t know if he’s hurt someone but also doesn’t know when he feels a certain way . usually , he had brushed it off and moved on . he cannot pick up on social cues ; it’s hard for him but he is very unbothered by it .

canonically , gunji is regarded as not very smart to which he displays the lack of intelligence as he mistakes dogs for cats , doesn’t know certain things from each other . i won’t downplay this . gunji really struggles to understand concepts , will make mistakes & overall does not understand many things about the world due to his upbringing & not being allowed to understand what could potentially make him leave arbitro’s control . he is not aware of the work he is doing and what it’s for . he is more obsessed with his sadistic nature & committing murders over everything else . he comes off as more of a puppet at arbitro’s disposal , not knowing better but never searched to find out better . the situation played itself into the boss’s hand , having taken in the wayward gunji when he had left the orphanage after reaching the legal age to be on his own . 

gunji also relates killing to reward . the reward is typically food . arbitro had used that to ‘train’ gunji into obeying him & doing his bidding . there was obvious at first some fear in gunji because he doesn’t enjoy pain that much . being punished was not his goal so he slowly turned to become a trained killer under the guidance of the man & his gang . kiriwar is sort of a guardian over gunji because of his unstable nature & inability to listen well to instructions , usually doing his own thing out of his own desires & pleasures . gunji has a very child - like innocence as a result of his lack of knowledge , treating things light - heartedly without much of a care about the consequences . i believe that he isn’t aware of it either . the world is just his playroom and he is the child .
